Product Review: Conair Curl Secret

I’ve been testing out the Conair Curl Secret Ceramic AutoCurler . I usually curl my hair once or twice a week – so I’m always happy to find tools that make the process easier. I wanted to share my thoughts on this curler including my PROS and CONS – so you can decide if this is something you want to try out!

Product Review Conair Curl Secret Tutorial

Conair Curl Secret ( Amazon CA link / Amazon US link )

Let me start by sharing my favourite thing about the Conair Curl Secret – how long my curls last! These are pics I’ve taken after curling my hair ONCE: they are all the result of a single treatment! I didn’t touch up or recurl my hair at all in any of these pics. You can see how the curls are strong on Day 1 and Day 2 – and even on Day 3, I still have visible curl definition, and my hair still looks styled!

Product Review Conair Curl Secret Tutorial

Now let’s talk about how to use the Conair Curl Secret. The curler consists of a heating element surrounded by a protective cover, with openings on each side. You thread a small section of your hair through the openings and press the curl button. This makes the curler barrel activate and it twists your hair into the tool. It holds the curl for a few seconds and then beeps to let you know when it’s done. You lift your hair section out from the top, and you’re left with curled ringlets. You can see a video demonstration of this here .

Product Review Conair Curl Secret Tutorial

With regards to the safety aspect – you can see how the heated element is completely encased in the pic below. While there are openings on either side to feed your hair through, there is no chance for your skin to come in contact with the hot tool – making it super safe to use! The pic on the right shows the 3 settings you can customize on your curling tool – curl direction (left, right or alternating), tool temperature and curl type (defined, loose or wavy). For my curls, I picked alternating directions and loose curls.

Product Review Conair Curl Secret Tutorial

Here are my PROS and CONS using the Conair Curl Secret.

  • Long-lasting curls – knowing my hair will look styled for 3 days!
  • Safety – love that the heated element is covered so that there’s no chance of getting burned. Also a good tool to use if you’re curling someone else’s hair.
  • Dual-voltage – having a dual voltage tool means you can use it anywhere you travel – you would just need a travel plug for the country you’re visiting.
  • Ringlet-type curls – I usually use a curling wand, which produces beachy waves with straight ends ( example here ), but the Conair Curl Secret produces a tighter curl with ringlet ends. I loosen up the ringlets with my fingers to style it better – but it’s worth thinking about whether you like the type of curl this tool produces.
  • You have to curl your hair in small sections, so it can take time to do your whole head (although the curling process itself is very fast). You can only thread through small sections of your hair at a time. If you feed a larger section into the curler, it will cause the curler to beep and stop – and you have to carefully lift your hair out and try again with a smaller section.

Overall I am glad I own this curler – I plan on using it during busy periods when I want styled hair but don’t have the time to re-curl every day. This also seems like a great curler to use when it’s humid – since these curls last longer and are less likely to disappear! I also plan on taking it with me when I travel.

Would you use this curler?

12 Best Beach Towns on the East Coast

Travel to the best beach towns on the East Coast for fresh seafood, buzzy boardwalks, and leisurely days under the sun.

curly secret travel

William Reagan/Getty Images

From the rocky shoreline of New England down to the flat beaches of the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida, the Eastern Seaboard is a region that shines its brightest in the warmer months. As temperatures increase, many travelers make the journey to their favorite East Coast beach towns to soak up the restorative, nostalgic nature that comes with salt water, sand, and good old-fashioned summer fun.

“East Coast beach towns have a certain distinct charm that you have to experience yourself to fully embrace,” says Katie Cosgrove, the director of sales and marketing at Ashore Resort & Beach Club in Ocean City, Maryland. “These towns tend to be more laid back, with an appeal for every type of traveler — whether it's families, beach week groups looking for nightlife, couples looking for a getaway, and everyone in between.” Plus, she adds, most of these destinations are relatively close to larger cities — like Savannah, Richmond, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, and New York City — which “makes for a quick and easy getaway for urban dwellers.”

With summer right around the corner, we had a few local experts, including Cosgrove, share their picks for the best beach towns on the East Coast. See which ones made the cut below.

Kennebunkport, Maine

DenisTangneyJr/Getty Images

According to Natalie Kurtzman , a travel advisor at Fora , you’ll want to head to Maine for “wide sandy beaches, amazing food (homemade blueberry pie and fresh lobster are a New England rite of passage), and charming towns.” While there are several beach towns to choose from, Kennebunkport is her top pick. She recommends starting your vacation by checking into Hidden Pond , where you can stay in cottages and bungalows, and then spending a day at Goose Rocks Beach. “A visit to the area requires a stop at Mabel’s Lobster Claw for — you guessed it — lobster and their award-winning blueberry pie,” she adds.

Newport, Rhode Island

shunyufan/Getty Images

“Newport is filled with amazing history and incredible food,” says Caroline Broome, founder and designer of Tillie , a Palm Beach-based fashion brand. While some beach towns veer toward cute and kitschy, Newport is all about the glamor; if you’ve watched The Gilded Age on HBO, you may remember the mansions, the cocktail parties, and all of the social drama between Manhattan’s elite as they enjoyed summers in Newport. Modern-day Newport still holds onto that level of glitz, with several luxury hotels welcoming travelers to the seaside destination. Broome recommends staying at the historic Castle Hill Inn , but there’s also The Chanler at Cliff Walk , The Brenton Hotel , and The Vanderbilt, Auberge Resorts Collection . During your stay, be sure to check off all of the classic Newport activities: Go sailing, explore the 3.5-mile scenic Cliff Walk , and visit the International Tennis Hall of Fame .

Montauk, New York

MikeRega/Getty Images

As New Yorkers know, the train ride out to the very end of Long Island can be stressful (particularly if you’re joining the throngs of people leaving Manhattan on a Friday). Montauk, however, is worth the four-hour ride and ensuing hassle — and there are even pockets of quiet , if you know where to look. It’s a bit more rugged than some of the other towns in the Hamptons, and I find that to be a significant part of its appeal. There’s a rustic-meets-luxury charm to the town, which you’ll experience at Crow's Nest , a bohemian hotel with both rooms and cottages. Or, if you want to take it up a notch, spend a long weekend at Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa , where 158 rooms and suites overlook the ocean. If it’s your first time out East, I also recommend visiting the Montauk Point Lighthouse, indulging in a lobster roll at Duryea's , and getting some dinner essentials at Gosman’s Fish Market .

Chatham, Massachusetts

benedek/Getty Images

“Chatham feels so nostalgic, with the evening bandstand concerts and the charm of Old Cape Cod,” says Kurtzman. “I spent time in Chatham as a child and have some of the fondest memories at Oyster Pond Beach and strolling Main Street.” If you’re traveling with a family or a larger group, you may want to opt for a quintessential Cape Cod beach cottage for your stay. But for those hoping for a more romantic or luxurious stay, she recommends Chatham Bars Inn : “The inn has one of the best spas in New England if you’re looking to sneak away for some quiet time. Plus, you can walk into town, which is such a highlight.” Between beach trips, bike rides, and popping into the t-shirt stores, galleries, and boutiques on Main Street, check out two of Kurtzman’s can’t-miss Chatham staples: local watering hole The Chatham Squire and Chatham Candy Manor .

Nantucket, Massachusetts

Tetra Images/Getty Images

Nantucket has its own brand of island magic — one created by foggy weather, blooming hydrangeas, cobblestone streets, lobster rolls, and stunning oceanside homes. “There is so much to love [on the island], but a few of my favorites include dining at Cru , Lola 41 , and The Nautilus . For a special meal with gorgeous sunset views, go to Galley Beach . A visit to Cisco Brewers is a must — and this is well paired with grabbing picnic items for the beach at Bartlett’s Farm ,” says Kurtzman. The beach scene is also notable (her favorites are Surfside Beach and Jetties Beach), and there are several top-tier hotels to book for an extra-luxe getaway.  “To stay, I love the White Elephant for its location, great accommodations (especially great for families), and amazing service. I also love The Nantucket Hotel for the location and amazing kids programs,” she says.

Ocean City, Maryland

aimintang/Getty Images

“Ocean City, Maryland is by far my favorite East Coast beach town. I grew up going to Ocean City with my family, and I couldn't be happier to now call this beach retreat home,” says Cosgrove. “I love that you can get a little bit of everything… easy beach access, family activities, great seafood, and vibrant nightlife.” Some beach towns may be sleepy, but Ocean City is the opposite; there are amusement parks ( Trimper Rides and Jolly Roger Amusement Park ), mini golf courses, playgrounds, piers, and plenty of dining options to keep you full and energized. “Aside from our new signature restaurant [at Ashore Resort & Beach Club], Tide Room , I'd recommend visitors also check out The Hobbit and Liquid Assets , which has a great wine selection. Plus the downtown boardwalk and Thrasher's famous french fries are not to be missed,” she says.

Duck, North Carolina

For families who “love a mix of adventure and relaxation,” Cosgrove recommends Duck, a beach town in the Outer Banks. With one of the best beaches in North Carolina , this is the type of town where you can really kick back and take it easy. If you prefer to spend your vacation days on the move, take a spin around the beach town on a bike (you can rent one from Duck Cycle ), head out on the water with Nor’ Banks Sailing & Watersports , or get your steps in while exploring the Duck Town Park and Boardwalk . And if you end up craving something sweet? Duck delivers. “One of my absolute favorite places to go is Duck Donuts ,” says Cosgrove, “They make incredible hot donuts made to order.”

Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina

Ray Tan/Getty Images

Broome calls Sullivan’s Island “one of the most lovable, laid-back beach towns in the South,” and it’s not hard to see why. Just a short drive from downtown Charleston, the 2.5-mile-long island is a local favorite, thanks to its proximity, easy beach access, and number of incredible restaurants — including The Obstinate Daughter , Sullivan’s Fish Camp , and Poe’s Tavern . “The homes here are swoon-worthy, and the beach is extra wide, making for incredible views and endless beach walks,” she adds. Pro tip: Rent a bike from Sealand Adventure Sports to explore both Sullivan’s Island and neighboring Isle of Palms.

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina

If you’ve traveled to Hilton Head Island even just once, you know it’s the kind of destination that feels like home the moment you arrive; it’s just that special. “Travelers will love Hilton Head's great long stretches of beaches and historic touches — it's also a really great beach town for those who love walking and biking,” says Cosgrove. An easy weekend trip from Savannah , this part of the Lowcountry boasts more than 12 miles of sandy beaches, 30 golf courses, and endless ways to spend a long, leisurely day. Watch the boats arrive at Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina , learn about the island’s history from a Gullah Heritage Trail Tours guide, search out dolphins with Dolphin Discoveries Nature Tours , or pick up fresh seafood at Hilton Head Farmers Market .

St. Simons Island, Georgia

DorothyBlahnik/Getty Images

Broome, who got married on nearby Sea Island , names St. Simons Island one of the best East Coast beach towns — a title given due to its perennial appeal. “[I] love that this destination is a wonderful place to visit year-round. There is always something festive going on with activities for the whole family,” she says. In the summer, East Beach beckons; in the off-season, visitors can still enjoy the scenery on a bike ride along the St. Simons Island Trail System, pop by the St. Simons Light House Museum , or fill up on the famous pancakes at Palmer’s Village Cafe . During the holidays, a visit to The Cloister is paramount (although you’ll need to be a guest — or have a dining reservation — to get on Sea Island).

Tybee Island, Georgia

When the summer heat descends upon Savannah, locals flock to Tybee Island, where the wide beaches offer a reprieve from the humidity. It’s an extremely family-friendly destination that offers something for everyone. For the history buffs, there’s Georgia’s oldest and tallest lighthouse; the adventure seekers can paddle out on the open water with Sea Kayak Georgia ; and nature lovers will appreciate the unparalleled access to wildlife with Captain Derek's Dolphin Adventures . Come mealtime, there’s no need to get dressed up. In true beach town form, Tybee Island is extremely casual — whether you’re dining at Breakfast Club (my personal favorite), The Crab Shack , or Salt Island Fish and Beer .

Palm Beach, Florida

Sean Pavone/Getty Images

East Coast beach towns come in all shapes and sizes, and Palm Beach, Florida is certainly one of the most glittery — and photogenic.  “Filled with endless style and abundant sunshine, Palm Beach is an oasis that feels a bit like stepping into a postcard,” says Broome. “With breezy palm trees, blooming flowers, and beautiful colors around every corner, the inspiration is endless.” The 18-mile-long barrier island is known for its high-end shopping along Worth Avenue, historic landmarks (the Flagler Museum ), and an impressive roster of hotels ; both The Breakers and The Brazilian Court Hotel are centrally located in town. Following a pool day or a ride on a beach cruiser, stop by Buccan Sandwich Shop for a quick lunch, followed by drinks at HMF or Florie’s at the Four Seasons Resort Palm Beach .

These Insoles Saved My College Running Career (and I Still Wear Them Every Day)

Portrait of Brenley Goertzen

The Strategist happens to be full of runners, so this week, we hit the ground running (literally), testing tons of running gear and interviewing experts to give every kind of runner all the intel they might need. Welcome to  Running Week .

Running builds me up in a way nothing else can, but it’s also the one thing that has (literally) broken me. I’ve always known that injuries can come with the territory, but following the best track and field season of my life — I was running personal records and breaking TCU school records — I began to notice a sharp pain in my right heel. Every time my foot hit the ground, it felt like I was stepping on a nail. It turned out to be plantar fasciitis, a condition caused by inflammation of the plantar fascia, or the connective tissue along the bottom of your foot .

I tried to run through the nasty pain (big mistake) and manage my symptoms with physical therapy, but I was eventually forced to take five months off from running . During that time, I saw several foot specialists and tried many different forms of treatment, including acupuncture and shock-wave therapy. I also tested less-invasive (and more affordable) gadgets, including foot rollers , toe spreaders, and heel pads. These tools and treatments certainly helped manage my discomfort, but the secret to my full recovery — without flare-ups — was SuperFeet’s cushioned yet supportive insoles.

SuperFeet All-Purpose Support Medium Arch Insole

I heard about the All-Purpose Support insoles from a podiatrist who recommended them as the best place to start before turning to pricey custom orthotics. The insoles — which you can slip into running sneakers and regular shoes alike — work like this: The high-density foam construction offloads strain and pressure caused by walking and running . Meanwhile, the insole’s deep, cushy cup cradles your heel, locking your foot into alignment with your ankle, knee, and hips to alleviate pain.

At the beginning of my recovery, I was advised never to go barefoot, so I wore my SuperFeet insoles every day. To fit them properly, I simply removed the factory insoles in my sneakers and slightly trimmed the toe box of the SuperFeet to match that shape. It’s important to note that at first these felt pretty stiff in my Hokas, but that solid support is what reduces the overstretching of the plantar fascia. The break-in process took some time — I started with a few hours of wear every couple of days, and gradually worked my way up to all-day wear. Eventually, the agonizing throbbing in my heel began to fade to light achiness, and soon enough I was wearing my insoles while cross-training and graduated to running on an AlterG (or anti-gravity) treadmill, which reduces the impact of your body weight.

When I progressed to full-weight-bearing runs, I kept wearing my SuperFeet insoles in my running shoes. After an almost career-ending injury, I was able to continue competing as an NCAA Division I runner for two more years. To this day, I still rely on my SuperFeet. They’re good for up to 12 months or 500 miles, whichever comes first, so I often purchase a new set at the same time as when I was buying new running shoes. I’ve gone on to try a few of the brand’s other designs, such as their Run Support line , which is lightweight but offers the same firm stability. There are days when I experience phantom pain in my heel, but once I’m wearing my SuperFeet, I’m reminded of how these insoles practically saved my college running career and fought my fasciitis for good.

How to Fast Travel in Animal Well

Don’t ignore the fish that teaches you the fast travel song.

A screenshot of Animal Well showing the egg room.

Animal Well is a game that communicates almost exclusively in riddles, even when it comes to its core gameplay mechanics. Take fast travel, for example. At the start of your journey, you might wonder if fast travel is even possible. You don’t even get a map until you’ve explored the opening sections of the game, so who’s to say if Billy Basso designed the game with fast travel in mind? Are you destined to backtrack everywhere?

Related Content

Fortunately, Animal Well does, in fact, feature a fast travel system. To unlock fast travel, you’ll first have to find eight eggs . Eggs are hidden all across the map in treasure chests, so as long as you have a keen eye for exploration, you should hit this goal before too long. For reference, there are sixty-four eggs in the entire game. Once you hit this eight-egg threshold, return to the room to the left of the central hub that has the large peacock in it . It’s marked by a giant egg on your map, so you can’t miss it.

The player obtains the animal flute.

If you have eight (or more) eggs in hand, the bottom-most door will open on the left. Go through here, and pass through the hallway. You’ll enter a room with a treasure chest on a small platform. Jump over to it and open the chest to obtain the Animal Flute . Use this item immediately to awaken the sleeping chinchillas all around you, and then use them to jump up to the entrance on the top right side of the map.

The player uses the animal flute to open the crow's mouth.

Inside this room, you’ll see a crow’s head and a small shrine that looks like a flute. Jump in front of that shrine, and play the Animal Flute again. This will open the crow’s mouth. Leap into it (don’t worry, it won’t bite), and you’ll find yourself in a new room on the bottom-left corner of the map. This is your fast travel hub!

The player uses the animal flute to open the bear's mouth.

All across the well, you’ll see animal heads that correspond to different sections of the map. If you’ve passed by these heads during your travels, they’ll immediately open up for you. Otherwise, you’ll need to explore some more to unlock every single fast travel location. Each corresponding animal head you’ll find in the world will have that same flute shrine in the same room, so just play the Animal Flute in those spots if their mouths aren’t already open for you.

The player stands in the center of the fast-travel hub.

How to instantly warp using the fast travel song

So that’s a nice shortcut and all, but can you really say Animal Well has fast travel if you have to backtrack to those heads? Fortunately, the game features a solution for this too.

In the fast travel hub with the six animal heads, you’ll see a ladder at the bottom of the room. Climb down that, and you’ll enter another room with a fish that pops its head out of the water. Jump down to the small shelf of land by the water, and you’ll see the fish pop its head out repeatedly, this time facing different directions each time.

The player recites the fast travel song.

If you piece together that each direction the fish faces has a differently pitched sound effect, you may realize that this is, in fact, a song you can play using your Animal Flute .

If you just want to know the song outright, play the following notes on the Animal Flute: Right, Right, Left, Left, Down, Down, Up, Up .

If played correctly, your character will instantaneously warp back to the fast travel hub. This works anywhere on the map, so you can enormously cut down on your backtracking time. Make sure to put stamps on your map to help you remember where each animal head will warp you to, and explore the well to your heart’s content!

The player warps using the secret fast travel song.

How to play the other secret warp song

In true Animal Well fashion, even fast traveling has layers of secrets for you to uncover. Admittedly, it’s not a game-changing secret like the first fast travel song, but it does come in handy if you’re determined to uncover every secret in the game.

You can uncover this song after you first see the credits of the game, and it won’t do you much good before then . Needless to say, light spoilers are ahead.

To find the other warp song for yourself, you’ll need to obtain the UV Light . This is one of four secret items you’ll discover as you progress into Animal Well ’s “second layer,” which involves collecting all 64 hidden eggs. Once you find this item, return to the house that you found after watching the credits roll. Travel to the right until you reach the screen with the ominous-looking donut floating around, and use the UV Light. You’ll see a string of arrows written on the wall to the left, followed by a swirly symbol.

The player uses the UV light to reveal a secret song on the wall.

If you’re here just to reference what the song is, play the following notes: Down-Right, Up-Left, Down-Right, Up-Left, Down-Right, Up-Left, Down-Right, Up-Left.

Playing this will warp you to the top of the “well” you find after first finishing the game. This song is very handy if you want to access those endgame areas again, but won’t do much for you before then. Still, make sure to memorize this one once you can make use of it. It’s just two notes repeated over and over, after all.

Iconic Las Vegas Hotel to Suddenly Close. Here's What Will Replace It

A fter more than three decades towering over the Las Vegas Strip, the iconic Mirage Hotel and Casino unexpectedly announced Wednesday that it will be closing its doors this summer.

A new Hard Rock Hotel and Casino will replace the 65-acre property, known for its Beatles-themed attractions and as the one-time home of Siegfried & Roy.

"We'd like to thank the Las Vegas community and team members for warmly welcoming Hard Rock after enjoying 34 years at The Mirage," said Jim Allen, chairman of Hard Rock International, which bought the property in 2022 from MGM Resorts.

The property will close on July 17, and any reservations made beyond that will be refunded. Guests can expect deposits to be returned in the next seven to ten days for reservations booked directly with the hotel.

MGM Resorts bought the Mirage from casino developer Steve Wynn in 2000 and sold it for over $1 billion to Hard Rock International two years ago. Hard Rock had said at the time the hotel and casino would remain open and operating under the Mirage brand for several years, but has since decided to shut it to facilitate the transformation.

A new mega-resort rises

The property replacing the Mirage will feature a nearly 700 foot guitar-shaped hotel that will soar over the center of the Strip, according to Hard Rock. It will be similar to the group's hotel in Miami.

Hard Rock Las Vegas is targeting an opening date in the spring of 2027.

The transformation is expected to add almost 600 additional hotel rooms. A new 174,000 square-foot casino will have 2,000 slots and 212 table games.e.

Over 3,000 Mirage employees, including about 1,700 people who are a part of the Culinary and Bartenders Union, will be laid off at the beginning of July.

The Culinary Union said in a press release that "workers are protected, even as the property closes its doors entirely for three years." Those who are laid off will receive severance and also have the option of returning to the new property when it is completed.

"While we pause for the incredible transformation of this iconic property, I'd like to thank all team members at The Mirage for their incredible commitment and helping us provide memorable experiences for our guests," said Joe Lupo, president of The Mirage.

"We are planning to host collaborative hiring events with other employers in the Las Vegas community over the coming months. Connecting the thousands of talented Mirage team members who provide outstanding service with new employment opportunities is a top priority."

When the new Hard Rock is completed, it is expecting to double the current number of jobs at the property. Construction will generate over 2,500 jobs, according to the hotel chain.

The Hard Rock Cafe on the Strip remains open for business as well.

"Over the next two months we will bid farewell to this iconic and historic property and then we will commence an incredible transformation," the Mirage posted on Facebook . "We look forward to the beginning of an exciting journey into a new era as Hard Rock Las Vegas will ignite the Strip with entertainment, innovation and world-class hospitality."

Hard Rock International, which is owned by Florida's Seminole Tribe, spans for over 300 locations including hotels, casinos, shops, performance venues and cafes.

The hotels have been honored by J.D. Power's North America Hotel Guest Satisfaction Study as the No. 1 branding outstanding guest satisfaction for two consecutive years.

The Mirage's history

The 3,000-room Mirage opened on the Strip in 1989, ushering in an era of luxury mega-resorts that have come to define modern Las Vegas. It was the first resort to have sidewalk attractions that have since imitated by other properties like the Bellagio and Venetian. Amenities included tattoo parlor, a clothing store by the Kardashian family, nightclubs and a one-time topless pool area.

The Mirage opened a $14 million dolphin habitat in 1990 for educational and research purposes. By 2019, four generations of dolphins had been born there.

The Secret Garden of Siegfried and Roy was an outdoor attraction showcasing six types of animals that were featured in the magicians' show, including Bengal tigers, white tigers, a snow leopard and an Asian elephant.

The Mirage was the scene of an infamous 2003 incident in which Roy Horn was mauled by a seven-year-old white tiger while performing the duo's show. He survived, but was severely injured, and the show closed soon after.

The current Beatles-themed attraction, which brought Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr together for public appearances throughout its 18-year run, will draw its final curtain July 7.

The Fox News Star Who Can Actually Get Biden to Talk

What’s his secret.

Peter Doocy, Fox News’ White House correspondent since 2020, has made a name for himself with pointed and at times heated questioning of Biden administration officials at briefings and other events. Doocy’s first interactions with former press secretary Jen Psaki became news stories themselves , like when he asked what Biden would call his own COVID travel bans after calling Trump’s “ xenophobic .” His questions tend to earn candid—if not exasperated—responses, especially from Joe Biden, who once said himself , “I know he always asks me tough questions, and he always has an edge to them, but I like him anyway.”

Politico magazine once asked of Doocy, “ Is Fox’s Peter Doocy Just Asking Questions—Or Trolling the White House? ” I’d be lying if I said I hadn’t asked myself a similar question. But watching his work in the briefing room beyond sound bites, you start to see more craft in it, especially in moving ahead stories the Biden administration prefers not to discuss. And you can begin to understand why despite it all, Biden officials themselves haven’t stopped calling on him. Though he doesn’t see himself as the opposition, Doocy does think it is his role to put pressure on the administration, and in a recent phone conversation, he said he doesn’t give much thought to how that makes him look—or whether people tend to associate him with the talking heads at Fox. We discussed his off-the-cuff interactions with the president (who also, for good measure, once called him a “ stupid son of a bitch ”), how to get Biden to talk, and whether he’d change his approach under a President Trump. Our conversation has been edited and condensed for clarity.

When you’re in the briefing room, what is going on in your head? Are you rehearsing your questions beforehand? Is there a certain strategy?

Peter Doocy: The first question is always good to establish what topic we’re interested in that day, especially because a lot of times we are going to be covering topics that, even if the briefing has been going on for an hour, haven’t come up yet. That second question is where we can really start to probe why something is happening that maybe the press team has not prepared for the press secretary or for the president as part of an official response. And I try to get as much information out of that second question and the third question, knowing that if we’re lucky, we will get three questions to the press secretary.

How does that usually turn out for you?

More often than not, I think we are able to generate exchanges that actually inform the audience about something that is going on, even if Karine [Jean-Pierre] or the president don’t really want to give a ton of detail, and maybe they don’t have a ton of detail yet because there’s some breaking news, but if you play a little bit of the question and the meat of the answer, I think people that don’t sit around watching the whole briefing at Whitehouse.gov are actually going to figure out, “OK, I didn’t know that this was going on, that’s an interesting answer.” And then they can decide whether or not they agree with it or disagree with it.

How much of your question-crafting process is your curiosity versus generating an interesting sound bite for a Fox News audience? Are you thinking about how audiences and voters are going to be thinking about these answers at all?

It’s all my curiosity. I think that’s reflected in that my question 99 percent of the time is going to be something different than anybody else has covered that day. And a lot of the times, it’s stuff that we haven’t even covered on the channel yet. If I have an ability to find a story that nobody is talking about yet and get an interesting answer from somebody at the White House, that is great to start the next day with, and then we can get reactions from others to what the White House said. But I would say that every day is just driven by my curiosity.

It’s your first election year as a White House correspondent. How has that changed your job?

When we got here to the White House—and when I say we, I mean me and Joe Biden—it was very different because it was peak COVID. There were only 13 of us at a time in the press briefings, all socially distanced, which meant that every briefing I would get at least five minutes of questions. I could cover so many different topics and have so many follow-ups, and it was great. And it was a very, very small press pool that rotated for presidential events, but there were never any invited guests and the staff was so limited that it would just be a small group of us and the president speaking in the East Room or in the State Dining Room. And more often than not, in that first year and the second year, he would engage at least a little bit.

Now that we’re in an election year, there are fewer opportunities for access to President Biden. All of his events have invited guests, and most of the time, as soon as he’s done talking, they will push a button and start playing “Hail to the Chief,” volume 100. So even if there weren’t all these guests in between us at the press riser and the microphone, there’s music playing. And so he’s very rarely going to hear a question from the press.

Campaign folks have talked about this. It is part of their strategy. They want quality over quantity. But it has been a change this year, and it makes every chance that we get with the president so much more precious. And he does make a lot of news when he decides to stick around at the microphone. A couple weeks ago, the day that the special counsel’s report came out, I got to ask him about the line that’s in there where Robert Hur says, “ He’s a well-meaning elderly man with a poor memory .” I asked him, “How bad is your memory?” And he said, “My memory is so bad I let you speak.” Which is a funny line that also makes news. And so, he can do it. The staff just seems like it wants to really limit it in an election year.

Are you having a harder time getting answers from his people, too?

One of the big challenges is talking about the election. Half the story is Donald Trump, but officials here at the White House, from the podium and in their official capacity, have an escape hatch because of the Hatch Act. and they can say, “Can’t talk about an election. Can’t talk about Donald Trump. He is a candidate in the election. What else do you want to know?” Luckily, the Biden campaign folks in Wilmington are very good and they are very responsive when we have questions and that is very helpful this cycle. But we still do need to know what President Biden himself is thinking about a lot of these things, and he is here at the White House. That’s why it’s so important to get to him.

In fact, two or three weeks ago, I was the TV pool in the Oval Office and it was the first day of the Trump trial in New York. I think maybe it was jury selection. And I asked Biden if he was watching any of the Trump trial and he just shook his head, “no” with a smile. And really, in a transcript, if you look, that’s nothing. But we’ll take what we can get.

Do you collaborate with other journalists in the White House briefing room to get tough questions in? I’ve heard that you all sometimes game it together, especially if you feel like they’re not going to get to what you want. Is that true?

That is true. When it is going to be a very, very small pool because we’re going to be in a small space like the Roosevelt Room or the Oval Office, the thought has become that President Biden is more likely to engage on at least one topic if people aren’t shouting over each other and he can hear one clear question. It seems like the results have been mixed with that. But in terms of my relationship with the other reporters, they have relied on me from time to time to be the one person, I think mostly because of my height and the volume of my voice.

Other reporters say to you, “Hey, you’re the tallest one here, you’ve got to ask this one question”?

It’s more who wants to go first, in hopes that everybody is going to get a question eventually, if it’s limited to four or five people going into the room. It’s who wants to go first with a question that he can clearly hear, and then who wants to go second. When it’s a larger group of press, it’s like the Wild West, and that is truly when people are shouting over each other and I just have to hope that I am shouting the loudest.

You weren’t there for the transition from Trump to Biden, but I was trying to figure out what that transition must’ve been like, and I came across this quote from April Ryan. She said, “It’s a breath of fresh air to not have people personally attacked on a regular basis.” Would you say that that’s been your experience?

There have definitely been some exchanges that can at least come across on TV as very heated. But from the president himself on down, the folks here have been good about touching base afterward to make sure that there are no hard feelings.

Are you referencing Biden’s hot-mic moment when he called you a “stupid son of a bitch”?

That was one of them.

Can you walk me through that moment from your perspective? What were you thinking when you heard that?

I didn’t actually hear it happen. I was at this event for the economic competition council and everything was so very COVID-heavy, but at the time I had a couple of questions about crime. The Ukraine war was bubbling up and somebody yelled to him about Ukraine. He essentially said, “I’m not going to take any questions off-topic.” I didn’t have any economic questions handy, but I had heard somebody say something about inflation. So I asked him, “Do you think inflation is a political liability ahead of the midterms?”

That’s it. They’re ushering us out: “Press, you got to go, the meeting has to continue, you have to go.” They take us down the stairs and at some point, in the bowels of the basement of the White House, my phone lost cell signal, which it does at different places on campus. And I walked back into the door toward my little workspace, which is the door to the briefing room. And there were some reporters there looking at a pool note from the broadcast and somebody said, “Oh Peter, he called you an SOB.” I’m thinking, What? Who? I didn’t hear anything. I still hadn’t seen the clip. And then I went down to the desk that I sit at, which is in the basement of the press area, and my wife had sent me a text. She said, “Is this you? Was he talking to you?” And I was so puzzled. And then I saw the pool note and I saw the clip.

I immediately got a call from The Five . They wanted me to come up and react to it, which I did. And I remember—I think it was Dana Perino—asked me during the broadcast if anybody from the White House had called, and I said, “I don’t think anybody’s going to call,” because until that point, after years of being on the Biden beat and some pretty heated exchanges on the campaign trail about various things, I had not heard from him on the phone directly. But sure enough, about half an hour after I said I didn’t think a call was coming, my phone rang and somebody asked if I had time to talk to the president. He told me “It was nothing personal, pal.” And we had a nice chat for a few minutes.

Can you say anything else about you chatted about?

I told him in the call, “Mr. President, I am still going to always try to ask questions that nobody else is asking about.” And he laughed and he said, “You’ve got to.”

You’ve previously said, about Biden’s first press secretary, Jen Psaki, that “it never feels like I’m getting smacked down or vice versa.” Would you say the same thing about Karine Jean-Pierre?

Yeah, I would. Her job is to defend the president, and my job is to try to figure out how they can either explain or justify certain positions. She can push back as hard as she wants about a topic or about the way that I ask a question, but there’s always going to be a follow-up. And to her credit, there are no topics that they say that they won’t touch that I can remember, with the exception of election stuff because of the Hatch Act. But everything policy-wise or Biden-wise, they’re good about answering.

Do you have any mixed feelings about how people characterize your interactions with Karine basically as combative clashes? Fox News sometimes frames them that way.

No. People can call them whatever they want. I am very confident every day when I go into the briefing room with my questions. If they watch my questions, her answers, I think people will actually learn something that can help them make up their mind about how they want to vote in November. So I know that they get characterized different ways by left-leaning outlets and by right-leaning outlets, but I’m very confident in the questions and the news that they make.

Can I ask about your dad, Steve Doocy? Donald Trump, who praised him in the past, recently called him “an unwatchable RINO.” Can you explain what’s happening here?

I don’t think my dad’s approach has changed at all the whole time that he’s been doing the show, and I pay as close attention as anybody. When I was starting out in this job, I looked at how he prepared as a broadcaster and the approach that he took, and it’s always been very, very helpful to me. I have not noticed anything. When he is getting ready, he is basically trying to communicate to the American people either things that he thinks are interesting or things that the butcher at Market Basket told him about a big news story. And I don’t think that that has changed.

It could be that this time next year you’re dealing with a Trump press secretary. Do you expect that to be very different?

Different how?

Well, one of Trump’s previous officials, Kash Patel, recently said that Trump will “criminally and civilly” go after his foes in the media.

My role and my approach would not change at all. In fact, I was in Iowa right around the time of the Democratic primaries and caucuses in January 2020. I had already interviewed every major Democratic candidate. Trump was doing a counterprogramming rally, and I reached out to see if Trump had a couple minutes for an interview, because then that way we would’ve talked to everybody. He agreed, and I asked him about the stuff that allegedly really annoys him. At the time, somebody asked Michael Bloomberg, “Is the country ready for another race between two New York billionaires?” And Bloomberg said, “Who’s the other one?” I asked Trump about that and he had an answer and we made a lot of news. I think I was the second person to ever ask him on camera about COVID. And so I think the approach would be the same that I have with this president, where you want to know how exactly they’re approaching a huge news story, but you also want to know how they feel about the stuff that people are talking about.

Does the Trump “enemy of the people” rhetoric scare you at all?

To be honest, I truly am so consumed with all things Biden. I haven’t seen every single thing that Trump has said. But I would say if he reached the White House, I would expect him to have the same approach as last time where he wants to be the face and the voice of all of these administration policies. I would expect him still to look for opportunities to be out there talking about everything every day, just because that’s how he approached it last time. And so I think the big difference would be Donald Trump wants to be his own spokesman. He thinks that he is his best spokesman, and that was a 2020 to 2024 way of looking at things, whereas President Biden takes a traditional approach. He might set the agenda privately, but he wants professional communicators out there as the face and the voice of these policies.

Have you had to fight to separate yourself from the opinion side of Fox at all?

I am not here in this job to be best friends with anybody in the West Wing, but I’m also not trying to make things more personal or nasty than they have to be. I have seen people take that approach, and I don’t think it really yields better results, in my opinion. I am overwhelmingly, I think, known as being an affable guy, but I’ve shown the president and his team that I’ll always be standing next to the camera with a question. And they could have stopped calling on me a long time ago, but they haven’t. The fact that there are so few events with President Biden is a separate issue, but they could have decided that they don’t want to engage us at all. And it doesn’t seem like they’ve decided that. And so that’s pretty much my entire approach in a nutshell, in terms of separating myself from a different department or from others. It’s really not something I think about.

Do you think that Biden is hiding away? Do you think that they are hiding him away?

I think you can just look at the schedule and look at how many interesting things about current events you’ve heard him say this year and it’s way fewer than his first year, his second year, and most of the third year. It’s just less and less. And so it seems like it is probably something the folks in Wilmington want as part of an election year. And it’s possible that they change course, and they go to the convention and the polls haven’t turned around and suddenly it’s like, “Oh boy, we’ve got to get this guy out there a bunch more.” And maybe it’ll work, maybe it’ll be too late. Don’t know.

It is tough because he, for those first couple years, I remember almost every event that he would give remarks at in the East Room, in the State Dining Room, he would stay at the mic and listen for a question and he would engage multipart questions all the time. And I think he really likes having the chance to do that.

When you put him like that, he doesn’t sound so “sleepy.”

You said it! I think about this often because we see so little of the president. Right after my paternity leave ended last summer, my first day, I flew to New Mexico for an event with President Biden and there wasn’t a ton of press there. And pretty much all press had left and I was just hanging on the press riser and I was trying to get the president’s attention. I waved to him and he waved me over and the Secret Service told me that I could jump over a bike rack. And I went up and I asked him a question about some congressional testimony and he didn’t like the question, but he answered it and then he walked away. And John Kirby said he did an interview the next day and he said to Martha MacCallum, “The president knows Peter’s not going to ask some softball question about how his vacation was.” And I think the president should get some credit for that, where he’s got Secret Service and he’s got control of the drone fleet. They could get rid of me they wanted to.

Word? That’s terrifying.

No, no, no. That was meant as a joke!
