Damon Locks Black Monument Ensemble performing at EartH.

Damon Locks – Black Monument Ensemble review – an eruption of groove-driven free jazz

EartH, London Bringing the adventurous spirit of Chicago to the London jazz festival, Locks directs his group through black-caped dance – and they respond with an astonishing tumult of sound

C hicago has long been a home for the experimental fringes of improvised music. Ever since free jazz pianist Muhal Richard Abrams co-founded the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians in 1965 – to counter the dwindling popularity of jazz at the time – the Windy City has produced a largely self-sustaining ecosystem of modern instrumentalists pushing the boundaries of their artform.

While earlier examples include the likes of saxophonist Anthony Braxton and the Art Ensemble of Chicago, the last decade has seen a revival of Chicago’s jazz lineage on the international stage via the critically acclaimed releases of drummer and producer Makaya McCraven and composer Angel Bat Dawid.

Musician Damon Locks moved to Chicago in the late 1980s and has been a pillar of the city’s artistic community ever since. His most recent work takes the form of his collective of singers, dancers and musicians, the Black Monument Ensemble. Performing as part of the 2021 EFG London jazz festival , Locks now brings this free-form celebration of Chicago’s Black musical legacy to the art deco space of Hackney’s EartH.

Largely silent through the 90-minute performance, Locks instead conducts his eight-person group through whirling dances across the stage – his black cape flying in syncopation with the percussionist’s slaps on the congas; his leaps into the air signifying the thump of the kick drum.

When he isn’t dancing, Locks is stationed behind a desk of hardware, shuffling papers and triggering vocal samples on the themes of affirmation and self-determination. The band follow his intuitive lead with three vocalists providing tessellated harmonies alongside trumpeter Ben LaMar Gay’s reverb-laden solos and Dawid’s frenetic runs on the clarinet.

The result is an at times almost overwhelming tumult of sound, held at bay only by a consistent sense of groove. This tension between stability and chaos is where Locks operates best, laying down tracks such as the synth-looping Now (Forever Momentary Space) and explosive Power. It is a congregational cry that stills us listeners with its immediacy; a free jazz eruption that Locks channels from Chicago to bring to us here in the fleeting moment of its making.

Damon Locks and the Black Monument Ensemble’s Spiritual, Funky Escape

The Chicago musician’s group is following up its 2019 album, “Where Future Unfolds,” with an LP reacting to the events of 2020 titled “Now.”

By Marcus J. Moore

During the summer of 2020, as protesters took to the streets after the deaths of George Floyd , Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor , and the United States once again reckoned with fierce racial and ideological divides, the Chicago-based vocalist, producer and sound artist Damon Locks found himself at a creative impasse.

“Where Future Unfolds,” his 2019 album as the leader of the 18-member Black Monument Ensemble, expressed the pain of seeing Black people killed without adequate justice. Should — and could — Locks gather the Ensemble during the pandemic to record new music in response to what was happening around them?

“The challenge was, ‘What would I say now?’” Locks, 52, said in a recent phone interview from Logan Square. “And when breath is the most dangerous thing around, how do you record up to six people singing?”

He emailed a local studio engineer about recording with a condensed version of the group in the building’s backyard garden. Two obstacles made themselves evident. One, it was hot. “I think it was like 93 degrees the first day, which is a lot,” Locks said. Then there were the cicadas; they were chirping so loudly you would’ve thought they were in the band.

“They were seriously right on beat a number of times,” said the clarinetist Angel Bat Dawid, who plays in the Ensemble.

Undeterred, Locks and the Ensemble convened at Experimental Sound Studio in late August and recorded what would become “Now,” the band’s new album, out Friday. Where the group’s 2019 LP spun racial disharmony into a sacred celebration of Blackness, the new record envisions an alternate universe of infinite possibility. “The moment ‘now’ is not accounted for,” Locks said. “So anything can happen, you know?”

Partially inspired by sci-fi shows like HBO’s “Watchmen” and “Lovecraft Country,” where Black people literally transport themselves out of perilous situations, “Now” uses up-tempo electro-funk and lyrics that spin societal despair into forward-looking optimism. The album — and Locks’s music, in general — also explores the concept of “the Black nod,” or the unspoken mode of communication between Black people in public spaces. In turn, Locks’s Ensemble work — with all its spiritual jazz arrangements, vibrant drum breaks and esoteric movie clips — feels overtly communal, like a private conversation between those who understand the nuances of Black culture.

“To me, the nod speaks to this destabilized scenario in the United States and acknowledges that you’re here,” Locks said. “‘I understand that this is crazy, so I see you.’” Locks, who also teaches art in Chicago Public Schools and at the Stateville Correctional Center, a maximum security men’s prison about an hour outside of Chicago, said he was encouraged by the activism he saw in the wake of protests and the pandemic. “I took inspiration from people checking in on people, people trying to get money from one place to the other, trying to find ways to get food to people who didn’t have food,” he said.

Locks grew up in Silver Spring, Md., and was introduced to punk as an eighth-grader. One year later, he started going to punk and hardcore shows just down the road in neighboring Washington, D.C., where he saw now-legendary bands like Minor Threat and Bad Brains.

As a nascent musician and visual artist, he loved the freedom these groups exercised onstage. That inspired him to create work based on his own feelings, regardless of what was popular. In 1987, as a freshman at the School of Visual Arts in New York, he became fast friends with a classmate named Fred Armisen , who’d only gone to the college to form a band. (“Because all of my favorite bands were art school bands,” Armisen said in a recent interview.) Armisen couldn’t really find anyone to play with, until he met Locks, who had spiky red-and-black dreadlocks.

“Damon had a jacket with the Damned painted on it, and I loved the Damned,” Armisen remembered. A year later, Locks transferred to the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Instead of saying goodbye, Armisen dropped out of S.V.A. and moved too. Another friend and bandmate, the bassist Wayne Montana, followed suit. “That’s how much I believed in him,” Armisen said. They started the experimental rock band Trenchmouth in 1988.

The band lasted eight years, during which Locks earned acclaim as a powerful vocalist, performer and visual artist. He made the band’s fliers, collagelike drawings mixing intricate sketches and printed images, which he photocopied at Kinko’s. “That’s the first place where I was like, ‘Oh, this guy is just a genius,” Armisen said. “This is a brilliant person who cares about every millimeter of what something looks like and sounds like.”

After Trenchmouth split, Locks and Montana formed the Eternals , an amorphous outfit with a sound rooted in reggae and jazz. Where Trenchmouth scanned as punk and post-hardcore, the Eternals tried to be even weirder. “We let that free openness overtake the music,” Montana said. “We started using some samples and clips from movies in Trenchmouth, but as we got older and bought more equipment, it allowed tonal things to happen that we were always reaching for.”

Locks was doing a studio residency at the Hyde Park Art Center in 2017 when he had the idea of putting singers together to expand the sound of his performances. He contacted Josephine Lee, the director of the Chicago Children’s Choir, who sent him a list of five adult singers who could bring his songs to life. The first performance was in his art center studio, where “I just opened the doors and put chairs out in the hall,” he said. The band landed a gig at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. The percussionists Arif Smith and Dana Hall agreed to do the show. The cornetist Ben LaMar Gay, a friend of Locks’s, joined, too.

The band’s breakthrough performance came in 2018 at the Garfield Park Conservatory as part of the Red Bull Music Festival, where Locks brought in dancers, a few new singers and Dawid, who filled in for Gay. The Black Monument Ensemble was born; “Where Future Unfolds” is a live recording of the Garfield Park performance. The group’s membership, and size, is fluid: “Some of the singers have changed over time but I consider it a family and possibly folks might show up again,” Locks said.

On “Now,” Locks purposely left studio chatter on the album to underline the band’s kinship. (Listeners can experience the joy that comes after the sessions are done, as the melody fades and the Ensemble applauds the take.) “For it to be such a hard time right now, and for us to have this time to record, it was absolutely beautiful,” Dawid said. “We were just thankful to see each other again.”

Locks said that his art is designed to speak one-on-one with the receiver. “I’m just trying to communicate as a human being,” he said. “The idea is to be in classrooms talking to students, to be in Stateville talking to artists who are incarcerated, trying to get their voices out there.” And with the collective anguish endured over this past year, he hopes “Now” can bring some positivity: “I’m talking about things that inspire me and passing that along.”

Secret Service Director Tours RNC Sites Ahead of Security Briefing

MILWAUKEE – On June 6, U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle met with public safety professionals from the FBI, Milwaukee Police Department, Milwaukee Fire Department and other experts from throughout the region to discuss the security plan for the 2024 Republican National Convention. The meeting occurred after Director Cheatle toured sites slated for the 2024 RNC, which runs from July 15-18 in Milwaukee. The Fiserv Forum, Baird Center, and Panther Arena were part of the visit, which included security briefings from Secret Service personnel and other public safety partners. Following the site visits, Director Cheatle met with FBI Special Agent in Charge Michael Hensle, Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey B. Norman, Fire Chief Aaron Lipski and other 2024 RNC executive steering committee members. The security plan for National Special Security Events, to include the 2024 RNC, is developed and approved through this committee, which is made up of representatives from supporting federal, state, and local agencies. As part of this process, subcommittees that focus on a particular area of the overall security plan are also formed, including traffic management, business and community impact, and maritime security. These subcommittees provide frequent updates and briefings to the executive steering committee.  “The Secret Service collaborates with our local counterparts for every protective visit, investigation, and large event,” said Director Cheatle. “This expert teamwork will be on full display throughout the Republican National Convention. I want to thank our federal, state, and local partners for their work over this last year. I am confident in the plan being developed and am looking forward to a safe and secure convention.”

“The Milwaukee Police Department is grateful for the positive collaboration we have with all of our law enforcement partners at all levels of government, including the United States Secret Service. Through these partnerships and planning efforts, we look forward to keeping all of Milwaukee safe during the RNC,” Milwaukee Police Chief Norman said.

“The Milwaukee Fire Department holds its responsibility to provide fire suppression, emergency medical services, specialized and technical rescue, and humanitarian services to ALL persons within the City of Milwaukee. We welcome and celebrate the Republican National Convention coming to Milwaukee. A critical key to the success of our RNC mission is aggressive and comprehensive pre-planning of resource needs, asset assignments, training, and communication pathway mapping. I can say that we have rarely experienced the level of sincere integration as we have with the United States Secret Service leadership team and Milwaukee Police Department in ensuring the safety of both RNC participants and Milwaukeeans alike during the RNC,” Milwaukee Fire Chief Aaron Lipski said. The 2024 RNC is the Secret Service’s 78th National Special Security Event. The agency is entrusted with planning, coordinating, and implementing security operations for NSSEs and has a proven track record since 1998. Other notable examples of these high-profile events include the U.N. General Assembly, the State of the Union Address, and presidential inaugurations. For more information regarding the public safety efforts ahead of the 2024 Republican National Convention, please visit the City of Milwaukee’s website at https://city.milwaukee.gov/RNC

2024 Memorial Tournament DFS: Optimal DraftKings, FanDuel daily Fantasy golf picks, lineups, strategy, advice

Expert with over $2m in winnings gives pga dfs advice and 2024 memorial tournament dfs strategy for draftkings and fanduel.

justin-thomas-pga-usatsi.jpg

Building the perfect PGA DFS strategy for the 2024 Memorial Tournament will certainly be a difficult task. With golfers like Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele and Viktor Hovland in the PGA DFS player pool, it's hard to determine which one to include in your 2024 Memorial Tournament PGA DFS lineups. Scheffler is the No. 1 ranked player in the world and he's already secured four wins and 11 top-10 finishes this season.

Should Scheffler be part of your PGA DFS lineups for the Memorial Tournament 2024, or should you roster a lower-priced player like Patrick Cantlay, who's a two-time winner of this event? Before you lock in your PGA DFS picks for the 2024 Memorial Tournament, you'll want to see the latest daily Fantasy golf picks, advice, and player pool from SportsLine's Mike McClure .

McClure is a DFS pro with over $2 million in career winnings, and he's been red-hot on his PGA Tour picks this season. McClure is also a predictive data engineer at SportsLine who uses a powerful prediction model that simulates every tournament 10,000 times, taking factors like statistical trends, past results, and current form into account. This allows him to find the best PGA DFS values and create optimal lineups that he shares only over at SportsLine. They're a must-see for any PGA DFS player.

Last week at the RBC Canadian Open, McClure identified Mackenzie Hughes as one of his top PGA DFS picks. The result: Hughes secured a T-7 finish after shooting 10-under par. Anybody who included him in their lineups was well on the way to a profitable weekend.

In addition, McClure's model is up nearly $9,000 on its best bets since June 2020, nailing tournament after tournament. This same model has also nailed a whopping 12 majors entering the weekend, including three straight Masters and the 2024 PGA Championship. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now, McClure has set his sights on the 2024 Memorial Tournament and revealed his optimal PGA DFS advice, strategy, and player pool. Head to SportsLine now to see his top golf DFS picks for the Memorial Tournament 2024 .

Top 2024 Memorial Tournament PGA DFS picks

One of McClure's top PGA DFS picks for the 2024 Memorial Tournament is Tony Finau at $7,900 on DraftKings and $9,800 on FanDuel. Finau is a long ball hitter who's averaging over 308.2 yards per drive this season, which ranks 23rd on the PGA Tour.

Finau also ranks fifth in strokes gained: approach to green (0.786) and 11th in greens in regulation percentage (69.95%), which bodes well at a course like Muirfield Village. He's been extremely consistent in recent weeks as well, finishing T-18 or better in four of his last six starts, including a T-2 finish at the Houston Open. Those impressive stats make Finau a complete steal at this price point, so confidently lock him in your PGA DFS lineups.

McClure's optimal PGA DFS strategy also includes rostering Justin Thomas at $9,200 on DraftKings and $10,800 on FanDuel.

In order to score well at Muirfield Village, players will need to be extremely accurate with their irons. Thomas enters this week's event ranked seventh in strokes gained: approach to green (0.697). He's also been effective off the tee, ranking 22nd in driving distance (308.1) and 38th in total driving (132). His ability to constantly put himself in advantageous positions has the 31-year-old ranked seventh in birdie average (4.43) and 17th in scoring average (69.57), which will make him a valuable PGA DFS asset this week.  See who else to back right here .

How to set 2024 Memorial Tournament DFS lineups

McClure is also targeting an undervalued player who's primed to play well, giving you a huge return on sites like DraftKings and FanDuel. Picks like these could be the difference between winning your PGA DFS contests or going home with nothing. You can only see who it is here .

So what are the top PGA DFS picks for the Memorial Tournament 2024, and which undervalued golfer is a must-roster? Visit SportsLine now to see the complete 2024 Memorial Tournament DFS player pool for FanDuel and DraftKings , all from the expert who's made over $2 million in daily Fantasy sports, and find out.
