Tata Safari [2015-2017] 4x2 EX DiCOR 2.2 VTT

Tata Safari [2015-2017] 4x2 EX DiCOR 2.2 VTT Summary

Safari [2015-2017] 4x2 ex dicor 2.2 vtt specifications & features, specifications.

Engine & Transmission

Timely services will keep a motor efficient and in top shape.

The official title given by the manufacturer in terms of the name of the engine, the displacement and the number of cylinders.

A bigger displacement and more than four-cylinders generally indicate a performance-oriented engine.

All cars in India either run on petrol, diesel, CNG, LPG or electric power.

Gives a good idea of the performance of the vehicle under full thrust. A higher figure here usually means a higher top speed as well.

Higher the power, the peppier the engine but it can also affect fuel economy.

Relates to in-gear acceleration. A higher figure here means better roll-on acceleration, fewer gear shifts, and possibly better fuel efficiency.

The more torque at low RPM range makes the engine feel more responsive. It also allows the engine to run smoothly without too many gear changes.

This is the maximum fuel efficiency that an engine gives. All numbers are provided by the manufacturer based on tests conducted and specified by the standards of the ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India)

Such fuel efficiency attained while driving in special conditions makes it unlikely to get it in real-world conditions

Cars come with different drivetrain configurations depending on the segment.

Front-wheel drive (FWD) is most common in mainstream cars while expensive cars or SUVs come with rear-wheel drive (RWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD).

Type of transmission used to transfer power from the engine to the wheels

A manually operated transmission is the most popular type, thanks to its simplicity and low cost. Varied types of automatic transmissions are also available.

Dimensions & Weight

The length of the car decides its segment. In India, cars that are less than 4 metres in length enjoy reduced excise duties.

  • Length: 4650

Longer length results in more cabin space. It also adds to straight line stability.

A car's width is defined as its widest point without its mirrors.

  • Width: 1918

Although more width gives you more lateral space inside the cabin, it makes the car more difficult to park in narrow spots.

The height of the car denotes the highest point of the vehicle from the ground.

  • Height: 1925

Taller the car, the more headroom there is on offer inside the cabin. However, a tall boy stance also affect the car’s centre of gravity which can cause more body roll.

The space between the center of the front and rear wheels.

  • Wheelbase: 2650

The longer the wheelbase, the more space there is inside the cabin.

The number of doors define the category of car. For example – four door means sedan, two-door means coupe while five-doors usually refer to a hatchback, MPV or an SUV.

The number of people that can be seated comfortably in the car, which has also been mandated by the car manufacturer.

  • Seating Capacity: 7

The official volume of the fuel tank of a car, usually denoted in litres.

If a car has a large fuel tank, it can cover long distances without refuelling.

Suspensions, Brakes, Steering & Tyres

Almost all cars in India use an independent front suspension which is usually the MacPherson Strut type.

The rear suspension can either be non-independent or independent.

Most of the budget cars have non-independent suspension while the more expensive ones get independent rear suspension which offers better bump absorption.

Most of the vehicles sold in India get ventilated or non-ventilated disc brakes upfront.

- The ventilated discs are more popular thanks to them providing better stopping power and it also works well in hot conditions.

In affordable cars, drums brakes are fitted at the rear as they are cost effective.

Disc setup at the rear is now getting more popular as cars are getting faster in the real world.

The official kerb-to-kerb minimum radius a car takes to complete a 180-degree turn.

Shorter the turning radius, the lesser space you need to make a tight turn or to take a U-turn.

The profile/dimension of rubber tyre that fits on the front wheels.

The profile/dimension of rubber tyre that fits on the rear wheels.

Mandatory fitment in cars sold in India, emits loud beeps when it detects that occupants are not wearing their seatbelts.

Seat belt warning is mandatory for front-seat occupants, but it is recommended that all occupants wear seat belts.

The car which started it all, the car which made India familiar with the silhouette of a modern-day SUV. Today we go back in time and talk about one of the most iconic cars in the Indian Automotive history, the Tata Safari.

It was the year 1998 and Tata Motors already had two offerings in the chunky utility car segment, Tata Sierra and Tata Sumo which were considered somewhat of a legend themselves. It was around this time when Tata Motors brought in another contender and the trio went on to coin the popular term, Si-Su-Sa, ‘Si’ being the Sierra, ‘Su’ being the Sumo and new ‘Sa’ being the all-new Safari.

For many Indians, especially the ones growing up in that era, Tata Safari was the first taste of a true 4WD SUV that we got in the country. In fact, it was the first made-in-India 4WD SUV and has evolved to garner tremendous popularity amongst the auto enthusiasts in the country.

Tata Safari over the years

First-gen tata safari.

Tata Safari First Gen

Tata Safari made its debut at the 1998 Auto Expo. Its humongous proportions and those manly looks made it an instant hit. The first-gen Safari came with a 2.0 Litre turbocharged diesel engine derived from Peugeot XD88 unit earlier used in the Sierra. It produced 90BHP mated to a five-speed manual. Having a 4WD option, Safari was widely recognised for its off-road capabilities. The massive amount of ground clearance further adding to the that go anywhere factor.

Safari’s strong character was one of its kind back in the day and there wasn’t any other car that could stand toe-to-toe with its stature. The road presence of the car was so strong that it made the traffic around it look petite and insignificant. It was the first time that the Indian market got familiar with the concept of climbing into the car as opposed to the conventional way of sitting in the car. All these factors made it very popular amongst the “movers and shakers” around the country. It was a politician’s favourite ride and has been a part of the PM convoy for a long time.

Its capabilities made it very popular amongst the auto enthusiasts of the time. Tata Motors sold a great number of Safari cars during its initial run despite a price tag of Rs.8.25 lakhs which was considered hefty back in the day.

In 2003, Safari was also introduced with a 2.1 Litre straight-4 N/A petrol engine producing 135BHP.

Second-gen Safari Dicor

Tata Safari Dicor

The Safari had a great initial run with its popularity increasing along the way. But now arch-rival had also been breathing down its neck in the shape of the Mahindra Scorpio. So Tata Motors in 2005 gave an update to the existing Safari and the Safari Dicor was launched. It came with updated cosmetic changes on the exterior and refreshed interiors.

Under the hood, it housed 3.0 Litre turbo-diesel Dicor engine derived from the Tata 407 commercial vehicle. It produced 116 BHP and 300NM of torque and was mated to a 5-speed manual. It was priced competitively at Rs.6.40 lakhs to take the fight against the Mahindra Scorpio.

In 2007, Tata further updated the Dicor with even fresher aesthetics, new headlamp cluster, new front grille and interior updates. The high-end trim even came with a host of features. These included dual airbags, ABS with EBD and rear AC vents. That’s not all, there was a DVD player with LCD screens at the front headrests for entertainment. It came with an all-new 2.2 Litre version of the Dicor tech engine producing 140BHP and 320NM of torque. This version was on sale from 2007 to 2012.

Tata Safari Storme

Tata Safari Storme

The biggest revamp that the Safari got was showcased at the 11th Auto Expo in 2012 named the Safari Storme. The Safari Storme had sharper looks, sporty front and rear profile and the design language based on Tata’s X2 platform was very appealing to the enthusiasts. With the Storme, the Safari got another engine update, a new 2.2 Litre Varicor engine producing 150BHP and 320NM torque.

2015, witnessed the Storme getting a more powerful 2.2 Litre Varicor 400 engine, producing 156BHP and a massive 400NM of torque. This variant also got new styling cues inspired by the Land Rovers. The Safari Storme came in both 2WD and 4WD options.

The Safari Storme GS800 | Indian Army

Tata Safari Storme GS800

After being a commercial success and critically acclaimed vehicle by Tata Motors for several years. The Safari Storme went on to prove its metal and served the Indian Army. Tata Motors was commissioned by the Indian Army to produce special versions of the Safari Storme as the official vehicle for the Army. Named the GS800, it came with bullet-proofing and offered additional payload capacity, power and torque figures to conquer the rough trials and high-altitude roads for the Army.

Phasing out of the Safari

With the emergence of various modern-age mid-size SUVs and transition of the market towards the new and revolutionary compact SUVs, the Safari simply began to seem dated against all the potential the Market had now.

After the emergence of BS6 norms, Tata Motors gradually faded out the Moniker somewhere around 2019. Tata Gravitas which was showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo is expected to take Safari’s place in the Indian car market.

My safari 3 litre still going strong. The 3 litre is a bit more crude but more reliable than the 2.2. Also the 3 litre has 320nm torque and not 300 as mentioned above. Mine is the VX so came with factory fitted lcd screens, blaupunkt music system, reverse camera, abs and air bags. Got on her offset mag wheels, Military snow camo(black, white and grey) on the side cladding all around which otherwise is black green metallic . The roof is pearl white. Goodbye Tata Safari: Looking Back at its Legacy as the Iconic Indian SUV is No Longer on Sale

The Tata Safari is arguably the most iconic SUV in India’s automotive history.

One look at the sales charts and it is clear that we Indians love SUVs, so much so, that we want one as an option in pretty much every size. Recognizing this trend, almost every automaker sells an SUV across their price range and if you look at recent car launches, most of them are SUVs as well. But if we go back to where it all started then arguably, it goes to 1998 – the year when Tata Motors came out with the Safari. A mid-sized SUV by today’s standard, but when the Safari came out 22 years ago, it was seen as the ultimate form of luxury. Now, however, as India has moved to BS-VI emission norms – they became mandatory from April 1, 2020 – the Tata Safari has unfortunately driven into the sunset. And given how everyone’s caught up with news related to the Coronavirus pandemic, we thought that perhaps taking a look at the legacy of the Safari will serve as a good reminder about the ‘OG’ SUV as we could not give it the farewell it deserved.

And just for nostalgia’s sake, we have also listed some of the advertisements of the Safari from back in the day to bring a smile to those who remember seeing it and tell those who haven’t, just how cool these ads were. Trust us, you would want to watch them all.

The launch of the Tata Safari took place at the Auto Expo in 1998 where it initially came with a 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine that made 90 hp and 186 Nm of torque and was priced at Rs 8.25 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai). So yes, it was a bit underpowered given how heavy the car was weighing in at about 2 tonnes, but that did not seem to deter buyers as the biggest draw for the Safari was the road presence that the car had and the comfort that is offered.

This went on for about 5 years post which, Tata Motors added a more powerful petrol engine option in the lineup in the form of a 2.1-litre unit that made 135 hp of power and cost Rs 9.35 lakh. While this definitely offered more power than before, it also meant that the SUV returned a fuel efficiency of 6 km per litre.

Fast forward to the year 2005 and it was time for another diesel engine option to be added in the form of a massive 3.0-litre DICOR diesel engine which came at a time when new, stricter emission norms had come into place. This made 115 hp and 300 Nm of torque offering the perfect mix of power and torque that the SUV had thus far. On top of that, Safari saw a reduction in price too as it was now priced at Rs 6.4 lakh.

It was then, in 2007, when Tata Motors introduced Tata Safari DICOR which came with a 2.2-litre turbocharged diesel engine, which was smaller than the diesel engine it was replacing but made more power and torque than before – 140 hp and 320 Nm torque.

The Tata Safari DICOR came with features like ABS and twin airbags and offered a choice of a rear-wheel-drive variant and even a 4x4 option. This engine was so good that it will go on to power the Safari for the next ten years. What also came with this version of the Safari was not only one of the most popular TV commercials of the Tata Safari but perhaps one of the most iconic ads made by the Indian automotive industry. Take a look at it below.

This brings us to 2017 when the Safari DICOR said goodbye and was removed from the Tata Motors website marking the end of an era. The legacy, however, was carried on by the Tata Safari Storme which was introduced in 2012 but remained as the only available version of the Safari for purchase. At the time of its introduction, the Safari Storme came with the same 2.2-litre diesel engine DICOR engine. This was meant to be the premium version of the Safari.

In 2015, the Tata Safari Storme was updated with the 2.2-litre VARICOR 400 engine that made 156 bhp and a massive 400 Nm of torque.

And now, in 2020, the Tata Safari Storme has gone off sale. Tata Motors decided to update the likes of the Tata Nexon and the Tata Harrier to BS-VI emission norm but the Safari sadly did not make the cut. However, for those who knew about the Safari for all these many years will know that it was known for comfort, it’s 4x4 capabilities, the high seating position which gave the view of the entire bonnet to the front passengers and also, street presence and street cred that has still not been matched by any other SUV. The Tata Safari has made a unique spot of its own and here’s a bonus advertisement below which actually sums up the sentiment about the car and is a perfect tribute to what was the ultimate SUV.

About Dinamo Elektrostal

Moscow’s Dinamo Elektrostal are gearing up for their fifth EHL season having frequently picked off impressive wins but have yet to top their particular group in their previous attempts.

They did get the best of arch rivals Dinamo Ak-Bars in both the Russian Cup and the Prometheus International tournament to show they are knocking on the door.

There has been a reasonable level of turnover from 2020 with Anton Noshin, Evgenii Mokrousov, Aleksei Godenkov and Ivan Zuikov joining the newly formed TsOP Moskomsport outfit. Danill Karagodin, Mikhail Nekludov and Ilya Larikov have all retired.

Their replacements are mostly youngsters with Dmitry Zheleznyakov, Aleksei Samylkin, Petr Agapov, Ilia Bartenev, Andrei Gribanov and Oleg Kulakov joining their line-up.
