Best Dive Shop in the Keys!
If you want a first rate dive experience, look no further. My one and only dive shop in the Keys. The guides, instructors, and crew are friendly and professional. They work hard to deliver an amazing experience.
Amazing Crew!
Amazing crew! Highly recommend any level of diver to use this shop. From first contact about general info to getting on the bottom, these guys are incredible. We were in town for a family vacation and my sons and I wanted to spear fish. Sonya did an incredible job instructing my sons on the spears and Capt. Bob got us on and off dive site and back to the dock like a pro despite the rough conditions. 10/10 on service, personality, and the experience. Don’t go anywhere else.
Consistently Terrific!
I’ve been diving with IDC for several years. What I appreciate the most is the consistency of the experience in working with the crew. Many of the crew have been working for IDC for years and they really make an effort to make you feel comfortable. I enjoy having diving with the guide as it always gives me a buddy and someone to put me on fish when hunting. It’s awesome. Kiera is terrific to work with and always finds a way to accommodate a last minute booking. I dived with Kelsey yesterday (9/10/2022) and she was terrific. Lanna was an awesome mate and was frequently in the water running lines out to divers. It is a great crew and experience and I will continue to dive through IDC when diving in the Keys.
Highly Recommended!
A complete blast, safe and gorgeous reef life! This dive shop takes great pride in having a dedicated and skilled staff, along with superior equipment and dive guides. They are high touch in every way and make sure you have a great time. We saw small bull sharks, large schools of fish and stingrays, along with turtles and colorful coral. Highly recommend!
Top Dive Shop in the Keys!
BEST Dive shop in the Florida keys. My father and I have went with this company for two years now on around 16 dives. The staff is professional and friendly. The boat crew knows what they're doing and gets you there safe and on time. Me, My father and Dale just got our Advanced Certification with Scuba Joe. Joe is one of the most intelligent and easy going dive masters we have ever met. This is the company I will always dive with when I'm in the Keys. 10/10 Gordon Ramsay dives with them for a reason.
Would Go Again!
This was my first time down to the keys and these crews we had for the weekend knocked it out of the park. A couple of deep dives at the Eagle ship wreck along with some good shallower water dives. The crews where very informative and really seemed to love their jobs. It was a great weekend and I would go again in a heart beat.

10 great places to scuba dive in florida.
By Kevin Mims
Drift dives along miles of spring-fed river. Shipwreck trails in the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. Delicate, vibrant coral reefs. Gin-clear freshwater springs and underwater caves.
When it comes to scuba diving, Florida has it all.
Here are 10 of the best places in the Sunshine State for scuba diving.
Maritime Heritage Trail, Biscayne National Park
The many shipwrecks along the Maritime Heritage Trail of Biscayne National Park , south of Miami and north of Key Largo , make it an idea place to see explore nautical history of South Florida. The oldest of the wrecks date from the 1800s to the 1960s. Tropic Scuba offers scuba and snorkeling charters to the Maritime Heritage Trail and other locations within Biscayne National Park .
SS Copenhagen, Lauderdale-By-The-Sea
The steamship SS Copenhagen ran aground on a rocky ledge in the Atlantic Ocean and sank at the turn of the century. Now the 325-foot vessel’s wreckage is part of the coral reef, which scuba divers can explore three-quarters of a mile offshore, 3.6 miles south of Hillsborough Inlet. The vibrant reef is relatively shallow at 15 to 30 feet deep and is home to a variety of marine species including sponges, tropical fish, eels, and hard and soft coral. Gear rentals are available through South Florida Diving Headquarters .
Florida Panhandle Shipwreck Trail
Besides having brilliant, blue-green water and miles of pristine beaches, the Emerald Coast is a treasure trove for wreck diving in the Gulf of Mexico. Twelve shipwreck sites offshore between Pensacola Beach and Port St. Joe in Northwest Florida make up the Florida Panhandle Shipwreck Trail . Five of the wrecks are near Pensacola Beach , one is off the shore of Destin , five off Panama City Beach , and one is near Port St. Joe . Dive shops along the coast can provide rentals and boat charters to wreck sites.
As unique as it is breathtaking, Devil’s Den in Williston is unlike anywhere else in Florida.
- Kevin Mims for VISIT FLORIDA
Devil’s Den, Williston
From above, there isn’t much to see of Devil’s Den in Williston —until you step down the steep staircase that leads to the glowing blue spring within the surrounding prehistoric cave. The privately-owned spring is 120 feet in diameter at the surface with a maximum depth of 54 feet. There are campsites and cabins available on the premises for divers and snorkelers who want to stay for more than the day. Rental equipment is available on site . Be sure to arrive with a dive buddy—it’s required.
Ginnie Springs, High Springs
Ginnie Springs is synonymous with freshwater scuba diving and cave diving in Florida. The property has seven springs, a full dive shop with rentals , hot showers, a large campground full of tent camping sites, and one rental cottage. Depending on skill and certification level, divers can explore the Santa Fe River, Ginnie Cavern, and the Devil’s spring system, made up of three springs (Little Devil, Devil’s Ear, and Devil’s Eye), which is open to swimmers and scuba divers alike. Not certified to dive? Ginnie Springs has instructors who can provide training and certification.
John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, Key Largo
For many, the thought of diving Key Largo likely conjures images of the famed Christ of the Abyss statue submerged in the clear waters offshore, but there’s much more to see in the coral reefs of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park , the nation’s first underwater park and one that spans 70 nautical square miles in the Florida Keys . To see the best spots on the coral reef, book a scuba tour directly at the park.
Neptune Memorial Reef, Key Biscayne
For anyone who has ever dreamed of seeing the Lost City of Atlantis, Neptune Memorial Reef should be at the top of the diving wishlist. An artist’s interpretation of the lost city, this artificial reef 3.25 miles east of Key Biscayne is both a massive work of art and an active cremation memorial site. It sits at a depth of 40 feet and features statues and structures—from the lions that guard its gates to intricate pillars and columns—that create an otherworldly atmosphere and unique scuba diving experience. Divers can get there with their own or rented boats (there are buoys at the site) or book a tour with one of the reef’s dive partners .
Phil Foster Park, Riviera Beach
Phil Foster Park in Southeast Florida offers easy access shore dives, where an artificial reef stretches on for 800 feet and marine life abounds. Parrotfish, angelfish, sergeant majors, rays, starfish, octopus, and more can be seen in water averaging six to 10 feet deep, with maximum depths of 20 feet. Guided tours and equipment rentals are available through Blue Heron Bridge Scuba and Pura Vida Divers .
Rainbow River, Dunnellon
A drift dive with the current along the clear, spring-fed Rainbow River in Dunnellon is among the best freshwater scuba diving experiences in Florida. With visibility up to 200 feet, it’s easy to observe the flora and fauna of the river system, from gar and turtles to otters and anhingas catching their dinner. Guided drift dives are available though Mac’s Sports Inc.
Wreck Trek, Fort Lauderdale
It’s possible to see several wrecks in one drift dive along the Wreck Trek in Fort Lauderdale , which is made up of the Jay Scutti, Merci Jesus, and Tracey wreck sites. The vessels, which vary in size, were sunk in the 1980s and 1990s to depths between 50 and 72 feet. If the conditions are right, a diver can cover all three sites in a single dive, which can be arranged through South Florida Diving Headquarters .

A Key West SCUBA diving trip ranks high on any diver’s wishlist, and KeyWestScubaDiving.com is your connection to the world-class dive sites and top-of-the-line dive operations of America’s Caribbean paradise.
The Florida Keys are legendary for offering some of the best scuba diving on the planet, attracting divers from across the US and around the world with an incredible variety of marine life and North America’s only living coral reef . The Keys offer dive sites for every ability level and taste, numerous wrecks both historic and modern, and vast expanses of marine ecosystem kept in near-pristine condition due to the protection of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and reserves like the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park and Dry Tortugas National Park. And while most Florida Keys visitors tend to think of Key West as party central, the island is in fact home to a great diving scene as well.
Discover Key West Scuba Diving at a PADI 5-Star Certified Dive Center
As the southernmost inhabited island in the Keys, Key West enjoys the advantage of relative remoteness along with proximity to the deep, open waters of both the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. The sea is rich with both migratory and resident fish species , and the island affords easy access to many types of reef diving, several well-known large shipwrecks, numerous smaller sunken vessels and aircraft, and great dive training opportunities for new divers.
Key West scuba diving compares well to far more distant and exotic dive spots, with the biggest difference being the fact that a scenic 4-hour ride from Miami gets you in the water, no passport required. Key West’s rich reef ecosystem offers every diver chances to encounter hundreds of types of marine life including colorful tropical reef fish, eels, rays, turtles, octopus, lobster, and big-game fish such as Barracuda, Grouper, Jack Crevalle, and Cobia. Another great plus about diving in Key West is that any non-divers left onshore will find plenty to do and lots of fun and excitement to be had on the island.
New divers can enjoy an easy Discover SCUBA Diving experience in the pool and over the shallow inshore reefs, or jump right into a PADI certification program . An easy day of classroom and pool work is followed up by heading out on a dive boat to explore the incredible undersea world. There is nothing better than completing your training dives in blue tropical waters among the coral gardens of a living reef. Meanwhile, experienced divers will want to take advantage of morning or afternoon 2-tank trips to explore the third-largest living coral barrier reef system in the world or dive on the 520-foot long USNS General Hoyt S. Vandenberg .

Compliance status
Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.
- Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
- Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.
Disability profiles supported in our website
- Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
- Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
- Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
- ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
- Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
- Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.
Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments
- Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
- Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
- Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
- Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.

He had been diving all over the world, and chose to base a scuba diving liveaboard company in the Bahamas because there is something special here. Sold in 2016 to long-time crew member and captain, Liza Hash, Juliet still runs primarily out of Miami, providing trips to the Bahamas in the Bimini area where there is an abundance of fish life and beautiful dive sites. Have the Best Time Diving in Florida! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Amazing is a severe understatement when describing everything about this dive center. By far, it is my most favorite. My family came down to the Keys for vacation and with scuba diving being our main focus, this dive center gave us everything we wanted and so much more. As unbelievably good as the dive sites were, the factor that made our dives the most fun they could be was the incredible staff both on and off the boat. I wish I could say more about the dive center as a whole, but take my word for it. The diving environment here was as safe and as fun as it could possibly be. If you don’t believe me, go book some dives for yourself. You won’t regret it.
We did two days of diving, morning and afternoon, during mini lobster season. This is a very busy and lucrative time for the keys however the boat was not overly crowded and it was a great price. Capt Allison was amazing! She is friendly and knowledgeable. You can tell she loves her job. Our dive guide during all 8 dives was Kyle. We were able to limit out thanks to him. He paid attention to the important stuff so we could focus on catching lobster. He would also point stuff out to us. He was laid back and made the dives easier and enjoyable. Everyone on the boat was friendly. Staff felt like family; they were all helpful and accommodating. We will definitely be diving with them again!
Captain Jason and team were highly professional, efficient and environmentally conscious! We had 3 days of diving with Diving With a Purpose to certify in maritime archaeology, and they easily accommodated our technical needs. They were extremely helpful in getting 20+ divers in and out of the water quickly and safely and even helped with special equipment. I would definitely dive with them again. Don’t forget to bring an insulated tumbler for the water cooler on board as that is the standard for dive operations today. If you pull a rookie move and forget it, you can purchase one in their shop.
I got my Open Water Certification in December, 2021 and came back in May 2022 to get my Advanced Open Water Certification. I love the whole crew at FKDC. They are all knowledgeable and wonderfully kind people. I got lots of support and encouragement from everyone there and appreciate their focus on safety. I will definitely be coming back! Kudos to my teachers Claire, Charlie, Scuba Joe and to boat Captain Jason. Great experience every time!
Outstanding group of folks running the shop here, I was at a sister location where my dive was canceled and they let me swap and join their crew for the afternoon. I had a great dive instructor guiding us in Anne and learned a great safety tip from Scuba Joe. All around very happy with them!!

See What Our Huka Diving Customers Have to Say!
I brought my daughter on Spring break as a senior as this was the only excursion we did. So I was hoping it would be worth it. It was! The private beach he took us to was exquisite. We saw dolphins while on the boat who swam right up to us, which was such an added treat. Ryan helped us while at the beach to look for sharks teeth and we got so many. The shells are like nothing other. We felt safe and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, he even had snacks. Ryan was also very informative and professional. The sunset was amazing by the way!
Did my first Huka Dive yesterday and had a fantastic experience. I would highly recommend Josh and Jade. They were fantastic guides! We found lots of high quality shark teeth in such a short amount of time. We saw some sweet sand dollars and had a few small fish come visit. It was a super neat trip.
My 16 year old son had his first dive today. The instruction before the dive was perfect. After the dive, my son said he had a blast. The instructors (Tyler, Taylor Jade Corey and Wes) were kind, thoughtful and encouraging. Tyler even took the time to explain how my son could get scuba certified.
Taylor was my instructor. I have never dived or even used a snorkel too much prior. I was nervous but she was so calm, confident and patient. She made me feel so much more relaxed and comfortable with all the training and any questions I had. Two other Keys Huka members came with us for some dives to get hours and they were also such a great help and just so down to earth. You can tell the crew really just wants you to enjoy the experience as much as they do! Thank you again so much Taylor along with Josh and Julie. ( I took Open Water and soon will be taking Advanced Diver)
Nick took us for a hooka trip off Venice beach and we were not disappointed! This was the highlight of our honeymoon. We found a pile of great sharks teeth including a juvenile megaladon. Would recommend this to anyone 10/10
You’re able to find tons of shark teeth and neat shells vs the public beaches. The diving was great to experience and the divers were awesome with guiding us and getting comfortable. There was plenty to do once you get to the beach! A great time! Will definitely be coming back.

Got certified with Dixie for the Rescue Diver. Charles was the instructor. He did a great job helping the class understand the why and how in real life situations. His years of experience and stories were great. The course was challenging and intense. As it should be! Charles worked with us and helped us every step of the way to make sure we were learning versus regurgitating. Great weekend of learning. Thanks Charles.
Our daughter took the Open Water Camp in June 2022 and she loved it. As parents we were comfortable knowing that she was working with professionals who are great dive instructors (Martha and Natalie), great with kids and focused on safety. I have experience with a few dive shops in South Florida and DXDivers is the most professional. We've done a few dives with DXDivers since her certification and I feel like everyone in the shop and on the boat is looking out for her. She'll be back for Advanced Open Water camp in the future. I highly recommend this Open Water Camp with DXDivers.
Completing the Instructor Development Course through Dixie Divers was a great! Thanks to the awesome support of the DXDiver family, and under the guidance of course director Charles Kiss, we crushed the written exam and skill demonstrations required to pass the PADI Instructor Examinations. The entire shop was invested in our success as PADI Professionals and shepherding us into the start of our professional dive careers. Thank you to Charles Neeley and Tyler Bo for always being available and willing to talk me down lol. We were incredibly well prepared.

Dry Tortugas
What are the dry tortugas.
The Dry Tortugas National Park is one of the most amazing places on earth. Situated 70 miles from Key West, it is secluded from most of the pressures of human development. The water is crystal clear and the coral reefs are pristine. Some of the coral structures rise 50ft from the bottom straight up. Fish life is everywhere and there are species you will only find inside the park. Finz has one of the few permits to be able to legally dive inside the National Park, and will safely take you and your dive buddies to dive sites you could never forget.
A trip to the Dry Tortugas National Park with Finz starts early at the shop. Outfitted with Snorkel or Dive equipment we depart on our 2 hour boat ride. You can watch the many mangrove islands and spot wildlife such as dolphins and turtles from the comfort of our bean bag chairs. We typically arrive to Garden Key over an hour before the National Park Ferry. This gives us time on the island without 200 tourists.
Finz offers two types of adventures to the Dry Tortugas. Our private experience is the way to go for small families, or groups of friends. Our private trip is the most customizable and exclusive. The trip is based on your group and can be adjusted easily to accommodate requests or changes in conditions. Finz Private Dry Tortugas trip is the only way to see Loggerhead Key inside the park. New this year is our option to book a public trip to the Dry Tortugas. This trip is more structured with a tight itinary. We offer either a Snorkel or Scuba trip but do not mix the two on our public trips. You can buy a single seat and still get to experience the tour of Fort Jefferson and the underwater park.
The Private Experience – After our tour we depart Garden Key and head for amazing snorkel or dive sites in the park. Since the trip is private we customize the itinerary and sites to match your groups preferences. We can visit Loggerhead Key and its lighthouse and have lunch on the beach, head out to Texas Rock for a scuba dive, or go back in time and explore a ship wreck from the early 1900’s. On the way home our captain will be on the lookout for more wildlife and will get you back to shore safely around 5pm. Just in time for Happy Hour at the restaurant near our shop.
Our Dry Tortugas National Park Private trip equally lends itself to both scuba diving and snorkeling. The shallow waters around Garden Key and Loggerhead Key are perfect for those that are both beginner or advanced snorkelers. Finz Dry Tortugas Private trip is the only day trip that will visit Loggerhead Key and its lighthouse.
The Public Experience – After our tour we depart Garden Key and head for 3 amazing snorkel or dive sites in the park. Our captain will choose the dive sites based on the conditions that day. Your Dive Master will lead the group of up to 6 on an amazing adventure and show you the wonders of the 99 percent of the park that is only accessable with Finz. Lunch is served on the boat between snorkel or dive stops. We will make every effort to accommodate requests but due to the nature of the trip we may be unable to. This trip reqiures 4 people to go and we reserve the right to cancel at any time.
The windjammer wreck is possibly the most beautiful shipwreck in the U.S. and is only accessible from a private boat or Finz Tortugas trips. Why limit yourself to only the 1 percent of the National Park that is above the water. With Finz you can explore more!
Finz Dry Tortugas charters are private or public and can accommodate up to 6 guests on our boats. Our Divemaster is in the water with your group, pointing out the hundreds of fish and corals in the park. This charter typically lasts 10 hours and is an all day adventure. Lunch is provided as well as snacks and water. It is an unforgettable experience that you will cherish for a lifetime.
The Dry Tortugas National Park Ferry is often sold out. Call us today to reserve a spot on our exclusive tour.
Places to Go
Visiting Dry Tortugas National Park during the late fall and early winter season affords a special opportunity to explore a rare undeveloped, subtropical island known as “Bush Key”. During the breeding season, this small island, only 16 acres in size, is home to birds not found elsewhere in the continental United States.
Garden Key is the second largest island in the Dry Tortugas, about 14 acres in size, and has had the most human impact. Located on Garden Key is historic Fort Jefferson, one of the nation’s largest 19th century forts and a central cultural feature of Dry Tortugas National Park.
Loggerhead Key
The largest island in the Dry Tortugas, Loggerhead Key is a site of shipwrecks, a significant lighthouse installation, and where the historic Carnegie Laboratory for Marine Ecology once stood. Named for its abundance of loggerhead sea turtles, Loggerhead Key has long been a haven for wildlife.
Swimming Beaches
Dry Tortugas National Park is situated at the southwest corner of the Florida Keys reef system, the third largest in the world. Due to the remote location, and easterly flowing gulf current just south of the park, you are sure to discover a much greater abundance of marine life and often much larger versions than anywhere else in the Florida Keys.
Why Finz Dive For The Dry Tortugas?
Finz Dry Tortugas charters are best experienced privately and can accommodate up to 6 guests on our boats. This charter typically lasts 10-12 hours and is an all day adventure. Lunch is provided as well as snacks. It is an unforgettable experience that you will cherish for a lifetime.
Finz Dive has one of the few permits that allows us to dive and tour the park and there are only a few other vessels that can even make the trip!
Snorkel Or Scuba Dive
Our private trip equally lends itself to both scuba diving and snorkeling. The shallow waters around Garden Key and Loggerhead Key are perfect for those that are snorkeling.
Limitless Potential
Finz Private Tortugas trip is the only day trip that will visit Loggerhead Key and its light house. The windjammer wreck is possibly the most beautiful shipwreck in the U.S. and is only accessible from a private boat or Finz Tortugas trip. Why limit yourself to only the 1 percent of the National Park that is above the water. With Finz you can explore more!

USA TODAY 10Best
Come face-to-face with marine life at the 10 best aquariums
Best Aquarium (2024) May 22, 2024
Aquariums reveal the hidden wonders of the world's oceans, lakes, and waterways in fun, exploratory settings. The best aquariums also play a vital role in animal conservation by participating in rescue efforts and marine advocacy.
These 10 aquariums, selected by a panel of experts and voted as the best by readers, represent the best in the country for their high-quality exhibits and visitor interactions.
No. 10: Georgia Aquarium - Atlanta, Georgia
The crown jewel at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta is the Ocean Voyager exhibit, where guests can watch manta rays and giant schooling fish swim past a 23-foot-tall viewing window. Other guest favorites include a stellar penguin exhibit, as well as many marine mammals — beluga whales, bottlenose dolphins, sea otters, and California sea lions. They're also the only aquarium in the United States to house whale sharks.
No. 9: Mystic Aquarium - Mystic, Connecticut
The most popular residents at the Mystic Aquarium are New England's only beluga whales; guests can observe these gentle giants from above and below the surface. Animal interaction is the name of the game at the Discover Long Island Sound experience, while Sharks! features one of the ocean's most misunderstood animals. African penguins, bearded dragons, seals, sea lions, and several species of frogs also call the aquarium home.
No. 8: The Florida Aquarium - Tampa, Florida
Florida Aquarium displays some 8,000 plants and animals from a range of fresh and saltwater environments, including alligators, sharks, seahorses, river otters, and free-flying birds. The Wetlands trail highlights regional life in a recreated mangrove forest, while the Journey to Madagascar takes visitors across the globe to observe a host of interesting animals — ring-tailed lemurs, hissing cockroaches, and frogs. At Stingray Beach, visitors are invited to touch stingrays and view sharks.
No. 7: Maui Ocean Center, The Aquarium of Hawaii - Wailuku, Hawaii
Explore the special connection between Hawaiian culture and the sea at Maui Ocean Center, The Aquarium of Hawaii. Exhibits include artifacts, traditional tools, and artwork dedicated to past and present life in Hawaii. The aquarium also offers thrilling experiences and attractions like a cage-free shark dive in a 750,000-gallon tank, snorkeling tours, a turtle lagoon, and a 3D humpback whale experience.
No. 6: Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies - Gatlinburg, Tennessee
More than 350 species are represented among Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies' 10,000-plus aquatic residents. Shark Lagoon, with its moving walkways through underwater tunnels, is the aquarium's biggest and most popular attraction, but kids love the interactive penguin encounter, where they can come nose-to-beak with endangered African penguins.
No. 5: Texas State Aquarium - Corpus Christi, Texas
The Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi, the largest aquarium in Texas, offers a journey through land and sea including encounters with the fascinating wildlife of the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. Notable exhibits include a spacious jungle featuring flamingos, flying birds, and tortoises, and a deep-sea habitat, where visitors can get up-close and personal with sharks prowling among a sunken shipwreck. Additional exhibits give guests a captivating look at sea turtles, dolphins, otters, and other amazing animals, while stingray touch pools and a 4D theater provide even more interactive educational experiences.
No. 4: Adventure Aquarium - Camden, New Jersey
Many surprises await visitors at the Adventure Aquarium in Camden, New Jersey. Among the aquarium's 15,000-plus aquatic critters in 2 million gallons of water are hippos, the world’s smallest species of penguin, and the world’s largest species of hammerhead shark. Guests can reach out and touch sharks, stingrays, sea stars, and horseshoe crabs. Live presentations and keeper interactions with penguins and hippos enhance the visitor experience.
No. 3: Tennessee Aquarium - Chattanooga, Tennessee
Visitors to the Tennessee Aquarium in Chattanooga trace the journey of water from the mountains to the sea within the aquarium’s two buildings. Guests enjoy meeting a broad array of wildlife, becoming immersed in ecosystems along the way. Alligators, otters, colorful freshwater fishes, and turtles by the ton can be found in the River Journey building, while visitors come face-to-face with penguins, sharks, jellyfish, flashlight fish, and lemurs, within the Ocean Journey building.
No. 2: Audubon Aquarium - New Orleans, Louisiana
In downtown New Orleans on the riverfront, the Audubon Aquarium is home to thousands of animals, many endangered, ranging from penguins and stingrays to seahorses and jellyfish. It features the Amazon rainforest’s underwater habitats, a 4,200 square-foot Great Maya Reef exhibit, and the 400,000-gallon Gulf of Mexico tank. Another notable exhibit is an enlarged 13,000-gallon shark and ray touch pool with a 60-foot LED screen that highlights the diversity of the world’s oceans.
No. 1: Johnny Morris' Wonders of Wildlife National Museum & Aquarium - Springfield, Missouri
Founded by Johnny Morris, CEO of Bass Pro Shops, his Wonders of Wildlife National Museum & Aquarium celebrates hunting, fishing, and stewardship of the land and water through over 1.5 miles of immersive galleries featuring 4D dioramas and a 1.5-million-gallon aquarium. Some 35,000 animals representing over 800 species are on display, including zebra sharks, sea turtles, and freshwater sport fish. Unique to the aquarium is its collection of historic boats used by Ernest Hemingway and Zane Grey.

McKee Botanical Garden: Vero Beach
The history of this property dates back to 1922, when two land developers purchased an 80-acre tract to grow citrus. However, after some consideration, they decided not to disturb the land's natural beauty and instead hired a landscape architect from the celebrated firm of Frederick Law Olmsted to design the gardens. By the 1940s, more than 100,000 tourists were visiting McKee Jungle Gardens each year to see the impressive collection of water lilies, orchids, and other ornamental and exotic plants from around the world.
Today, guests can wander through the now 18-acre jungle in Vero Beach that's listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The gardens are also regarded as a preservation project of national significance by the Garden Conservancy. If you have kids in tow on your visit, don't miss the Children's Garden at the property. The Hemingway Home and Museum: Key West
Rob-O'Neal | Courtesy of Hemingway Home and Museum
The legendary author Ernest M. Hemingway first visited Key West in April 1928. During this trip to the Florida Keys, he finished his novel "A Farewell to Arms." He and his second wife, Pauline, fell in love with the island, and after two seasons Pauline's uncle bought a home for them on Whitehead Street. The Spanish Colonial home, built in 1851, was in disrepair when it was purchased and went through a significant restoration project in the 1930s.
Today, Hemingway's home is a National Historic Landmark. Many of Hemingway's personal artifacts remain in the house. According to tourgoers, you can even see quite a few six-toed cats wandering the property, just like the six-toed tomcat that belonged to Hemingway. Guided 20- to 30-minute tours are available daily.

Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park
Located approximately 15 miles south of Tallahassee , Wakulla Springs takes guests back to Old Florida and affords opportunities to see deer, alligators, manatees and turtles in the wild. The 6,000-acre wildlife sanctuary has thousands of years of history; it boasts one of the world's deepest and largest freshwater springs as well as an ancient cypress swamp. This setting was the perfect backdrop for filming "Tarzan's Secret Treasure" (1941) and "Creature From the Black Lagoon" (1954).
Take the 45- to 55-minute ranger-led glass-bottom boat tour on the Wakulla River for incredible wildlife-viewing opportunities. The spring-fed water is remarkably clear, which helped a mastodon skeleton be discovered within its depths. The ancient fossil is now on display at the Museum of Florida History in Tallahassee.
Address: 465 Wakulla Park Drive, Wakulla Springs, FL 32327
Palace Saloon: Amelia Island
Dawna Moore | Courtesy of AmeliaIsland.com
Grab a seat and tip back a cold one at the oldest continuously operating bar in the state: the Palace Saloon. Located on Centre Street in downtown Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island , the historic building was originally designed as a haberdashery in 1878. When it was purchased in 1903, the new owner enlisted the assistance of his friend – the founder of Anheuser-Busch, Adolphus Bush – to create an upscale "gentleman's establishment." The bar was so exclusive that it even attracted the wealthy Carnegie and Rockefeller families who vacationed on Georgia's nearby Cumberland Island during that time.
Local lore claims the Palace Saloon was the last bar to close in Florida during Prohibition; it survived by selling special wines, ice cream, Texaco gasoline, 3% near-beer and cigars. Today, the interior retains much of its original charm, although the clientele has changed. When in town, stop by the saloon's new outdoor space, The Shipyard, and order a famous Pirates Punch.
Address: 117 Centre St., Fernandina Beach, FL 32034
The Dalí Museum: St. Petersburg
Courtesy of 2023 – Salvador Dalí Museum, Inc., St. Petersburg, FL
The Dalí Museum highlights the life and work of the innovative artist Salvador Dalí. The design of the building, by architect Yann Weymouth of HOK, is the perfect introduction to the eccentric pieces of art inside. Hurricane-proof glass sections that are 18 inches thick create a 75-foot-tall geodesic bubble known as the Enigma in the center of the building, resembling the one at Dalí’s museum in Spain.
Visitors can view the permanent collections at The Dalí , which include prints, paintings, objects, photographs and works on paper. You'll also find rotating exhibits from other artists, special events and classes. Reviewers comment that the exterior is as much a work of art as the collections inside and call the experience informative. After your visit, have dinner and watch the sunset at one of the restaurants on nearby St. Pete Pier.
Address: 1 Dali Blvd., St. Petersburg, FL 33701
John Pennecamp Coral Reef State Park: Key Largo
John Pennecamp Coral Reef State Park encompasses 70 nautical square miles, and it was the first undersea park in the U.S. You can take a glass-bottom boat tour to view the coral reefs and marine life from above, though scuba divers and snorkelers may want a closer look at the underwater habitats that are part of the Florida Keys ecosystem. In addition to colorful sponges and different species of fish, you may also see crabs, lobsters, dolphins, sea turtles and manatees.
If you want to visit the famous 9-foot-tall bronze statue known as Christ of the Abyss located off the coast, you'll need to take a dive or snorkel tour with a company like Silent World Dive Center in Key Largo . If seeing the statue is not on your underwater bucket list, book a 3.5-hour snorkeling tour on Viator that includes two different reefs in the Florida Keys, such as Grecian Rocks or John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park . Plan to camp overnight in the park for an extended stay to enjoy more water-based activities like kayaking and canoeing.
Go scalloping in Pasco County
There are several places to snorkel or dive for scallops in the Sunshine State, including on Florida's Sports Coast in Pasco County, situated along the Gulf of Mexico. The bay scallops found in these shallow waters are smaller than sea scallops. Their shells have 20 pairs of bright blue eyes that alert them to light and the presence of predators, including scallop hunters. You may even see them "swim" backward to escape by quickly opening and closing their shells.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Committee has recently approved an extension of scalloping season in the county, which will now run from July 10 through Aug. 18. For the best scalloping experience, book a trip with a local guide or charter company that will know the top places to harvest the bivalve mollusks.
If you're going to explore more of the area during your visit, reserve a room at The Hacienda in New Port Richey for a step back into Old Florida. The historic property opened in 1927 as one of Florida's famed pink hotels, attracting celebrities and dignitaries in the town that was known back then as "Hollywood East."
Come for Gasparilla Season in Tampa Bay
Courtesy of Visit Tampa Bay
This two-month event features a massive pirate festival, named for the (likely fictitious) pirate José Gaspar of local legend. The Gasparilla Pirate Fest has been thrilling attendees since its inception in 1904. The swashbuckling fun and plundering kicks off at the end of January with what's billed as the third-largest parade in the country. The 4.5-mile route features hundreds of elaborate floats with treasures to pillage, all led by the captain of Ye Mystic Krewe and his pirates.
Gasparilla Season also features an outdoor music festival, a children's parade followed by a fireworks display, a film fest, an arts fest and much more. Even college football teams and their fans get in on the fun during the Gasparilla Bowl in December. If you're ready for a yo-ho-ho good time, bring your hearties and scallywags to Tampa Bay during Gasparilla Season.
Lion Country Safari: Loxahatchee
Courtesy of Lion Country Safari
Lion Country Safari is a 320-acre family-friendly attraction in a rural part of Palm Beach County less than 20 miles from West Palm Beach . The drive-thru concept opened in 1967 as one of the first cageless zoos in the U.S., with free-roaming lions and other animals offering a big game experience close to home. The year-round tropical climate in Florida is ideal for the large herds of animals originating from six continents, including lions, giraffes, wildebeests, zebras, rhinos and chimpanzees. The safari is also involved in conservation efforts and breeding programs for threatened species.
You'll find seven main habitats across 4 miles of Lion Country Safari . There's also a 55-acre adventure park with rides, a petting zoo, animal encounters, a water park, paddleboats and other attractions. You can even take an escorted VIP tour with an expert guide that includes two up-close experiences with some of the animals. Travelers say they enjoy getting close to the animals and that it's a great way to spend a day. Take your safari adventure up a notch by spending the night listening to the sounds of wildlife with an overnight stay at the on-site campground.

Travel | 2 florida beaches make dr. beach annual top 10 list.
Caladesi Island State Park near Clearwater came in at No. 4 while Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park in Naples grabbed the No. 8 spot.
Duke Kahanamoku Beach on Oahu in Hawaii grabbed the lead spot as determined by Stephen Leatherman, a professor at Miami’s Florida International University. He came up with his Dr. Beach list in 1991.
The way the list works is that each year, Leatherman uses 50 criteria to name the top 10 beaches. When a beach makes it to No. 1, it is retired from the list so other beaches can get a shot in successive years. After 25 years, Leatherman resets it so former winners were back in the mix.
Since the reset in 2016, Florida beaches have landed No. 1 three times including 2023’s winner St. George Island State Park in the Panhandle. The 2020 winner was Grayton Beach State Park while Siesta Beach on Siesta Key near Sarasota was named No. 1 in 2017.
Caladesi Island State Park has been climbing the charts as winning beaches retire from eligibility.
Primarily accessible by boat north of Clearwater and west of Dunedin, Caladesi was rated No. 1 on the 2008 list.
“Caladesi is reached by pedestrian ferry boat, private boats or a long walk north from Clearwater Beach –the inlet is closed so Caladesi is no longer a true island, but still a great getaway,” Leatherman said. “The white beach is composed of crystalline quartz sand which is soft and cushy at the water’s edge, inviting one to take a dip in the sparkling clear waters. There are boardwalk trails, but my favorite is the kayak and canoe trails through the mangroves to see the large blue herons and other birds that frequent this wonderful natural area.”
Delnor-Wiggins has not been on the Dr. Beach list since 2015, the last year before Leatherman hit the reset. It’s on the south side of an inlet for the Cocohatchee River in southwest Florida north of Naples.
“This barrier island beach boasts of beautiful white sand beaches and crystal-clear Gulf waters,” Leatherman writes. “Activities include swimming, snorkeling, paddle boarding, shelling, and fishing. Wildlife in the park includes bald eagles, ospreys, and manatees. Pine trees provide welcome shade.”
He notes the park is still recovering from the devastation of Hurricane Ian in 2022, so some areas remain closed.
Other Florida beaches that have garnered top honors in years past include Fort DeSoto Park in St. Petersburg in 2005, St. Joseph Peninsula in Port St. Joe in 2002, St. Andrews State Park in Panama City in 1995 and Bahia Honda State Park on Big Pine Key in 1992.
