DP World Tour Championship leaderboard: Matt Fitzpatrick, Tyrrell Hatton share Round 1 lead in Dubai
Rory mcilroy and jon rahm are also still within striking distance of the season-long points race.
Three major winners emerged as the favorites to win the DP World Tour Championship earlier this week, and one of them co-leads in Dubai after Round 1 as the DP World Tour season comes to a close. Matt Fitzpatrick, who has won two of the last six season-ending tournaments on this golf course, shot a 7-under 65 and is tied with Tyrrell Hatton after 18 holes of play.
For a while, it looked as if it might be even better than that. Fitzpatrick birdied his first five holes before cooling off and playing the next 13 in just 2 under. Still, it's an ideal start for the reigning U.S. Open champion as he looks to cap what has been a spectacular year with a second win and, potentially, his first Harry Vardon trophy, given to the player who tops the DP World Tour's season-long points race.
"I was laughing to be honest [about the hot start]," Fiztpatrick said. "I said to [caddie] Billy [Foster] yesterday, 'When we won in 2020, didn't we have four in a row?' Then we did four in a row and we laughed about that, then I made a fifth. It was a nice start to the day."
Seventh birdie of the day 💪 @MattFitz94 ties the lead. #DPWTC | #RolexSeries pic.twitter.com/i2isf1ahzP — DP World Tour (@DPWorldTour) November 17, 2022
Hatton, too, had a nice start to his day. He birdied four of the first seven, and then four more after that before making his only bogey of the day (a six on the 18th hole). He fell into a tie with Fitzpatrick because of a mistake at the last but is still in a good spot to get what would be his first win since Abu Dhabi at the start of 2021.
"I'm surprised to hear it's my lowest round to start with [at this event]," said Hatton. "Obviously it was a good day. Hit a lot of good shots. Putter was great. Kind of happy with that start. Although my head's a bit fried at the moment. My mind is just raging at the last there. But it is what it is."
Those two lead a resurgent Alex Noren by one and Adri Arnaus by two, but the bigger names and more feared players are further back. Tommy Fleetwood is 4 under; Jon Rahm is 2 under; pre-tournament favorite Rory McIlroy is 1 under; Shane Lowry is 1 over; and Viktor Hovland is 2 over. That's a lot of ground for nearly everyone in this group to make up on two Ryder Cup-level players like Fitzpatrick and Hatton.
"I play well here," said McIlroy. "[I was] 3 under through eight holes. I'm not -- it's not far away. It's not as if there's anything that I need to drastically work on. And yeah, thankfully there's three rounds left, go out and shoot a good one tomorrow and be ready for the weekend."
Rory McIlroy opened with 71 today at the DP World Tour Championship. Incredibly, it's his highest opening round score worldwide since a first round 73 at the Masters. — Justin Ray (@JustinRayGolf) November 17, 2022
The silver lining for McIlroy is two fold. One, there's plenty of time left to make up a lot of ground, and he's perhaps the best ever on this golf course (although Fitzpatrick is terrific as well). Two, McIlroy only narrowly trails Fitzpatrick for the season-long points race. Even if Fitzpatrick wins, McIlroy can still win the race by finishing second in this field.
Regardless, the tone has been set by two Englishmen for this week's tournament. Several other superstars are chasing, but running down one of Hatton and Fitzpatrick will be difficult enough. To get by two of them will be, if it happens, an extraordinary feat.
DP World Tour Championship Odds
- Matt Fitzpatrick: +230
- Tyrrell Hatton: +450
- Rory McIlroy: +750
- Alex Noren: 9-1
- Jon Rahm: 9-1
- Tommy Fleetwood: 11-1
Fitzpatrick and McIlroy have changed positions here. McIlroy was shorter than 3-1 to win coming into this week, and Fitzpatrick was 9-1 before his 65 in the first round. I'm hesitant about the players beyond Hatton because of how quality the top two are, and I'm glad to have picked Fitzpatrick at 9-1. However, if I have to take somebody outside of the top two, I'm going with Fleetwood, who is coming off a win last week in South Africa and just three back.

Jon rahm wins third dp world tour championship; rory mcilroy claims fourth season title, share this article.
It was the Rahm and Rory show at the 2022 DP World Tour Championship.
Jon Rahm shot a 5-under 67 on Sunday to win the tour’s season finale in Dubai at 20 under, two shots ahead of Tyrrell Hatton and Alex Noren. With the win, he becomes the first player to win the tour championship for a third time.
Rory McIlroy’s lucky number this week at Jumeirah Golf Estates was four, as in, he’s now been crowned European Number One four times. McIlroy closed with a 68 for a solo fourth-place finish and clinched the points race when Matt Fitzpatrick tied for fifth. McIlroy earns the Harry Vardon trophy as a result, something he also took home in 2012, 2014 and 2015.
“It’s been seven years I last did it. This is my fourth one but it’s been a while, I’ve won three FedEx Cups since the last time I won this and it means a lot,” he said.
Only Colin Montgomerie (eight) and Seve Ballesteros (six) have more Vardon trophies.
For Rahm, this win marks his ninth DP World Tour victory and third worldwide title in 2022.
“Hopefully, people can stop telling it has been a bad year,” he said.
Rahm began the day with a one-shot lead and started his final 18 with three straight birdies. He bogeyed the fourth but added birdies on Nos. 7, 13 and 15. He now has three wins and four top-5s at Jumeirah Golf Estates’ Earth Course.
“I like this course and this course likes me. I hope this is the third of many more,” he said.

Here's the prize money payout for each golfer at the 2023 DP World Tour Championship
Rory McIlroy and Nicolai Hojgaard walked away the big winners from this week's DP World Tour Championship. McIlroy won the overall points title for the fifth time while Hojgaard was the winner of the Tour Championship with a 21-under total.
David Cannon
An already memorable 2023 season on the DP World Tour for Nicolai Hojgaard—in which he played in his first Ryder Cup—got even more so on Sunday at the DP World Tour Championship. The 22-year-old Dane closed out the final round at the Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai with a eight-under 64 to charge past overnight leader Matt Wallace and claim victory with a 21-under 267 performance, two shots better than Wallace, Tommy Fleetwood and Viktor Hovland.
Hojgaard’s victory is the third of his career on the DP World Tour but his most lucrative. The first-place prize money payout was worth $3 million from an overall purse of $10.5 million. The payday from Sunday (€2,764,461 in Euros) amounts to more than 40 percent his entire career earnings to date on the DP World Tour (€6,380,134.75).
Here's the prize money payout for each golfer who competed in the DP World Tour’s season finale.

England's Mike Browne takes historic G4D title deep in heart of Texas

Change Text Size
This week’s CJ Cup Byron Nelson PGA TOUR event in McKinney, Texas, can only hope to play host to a finish that rivals the exciting ending to the Golf 4 Disabilities (G4D) Tour event that preceded it at TPC Craig Ranch.
England’s Mike Browne made pars on his last three holes on Tuesday to hold off the Tour’s top-ranked player, Kipp Popert of Australia, and capture his third G4D Tour title by one stroke. Browne came home in 2-under 34 to shoot 73, finishing 36 holes at level-par 144. His score was one better than Popert, who had begun the day sharing the lead with Browne after an opening 71, and Spain’s Juan Postigo Arce, an amazing talent who competes on one leg and shot 71, tying the day’s low round.
Popert was one of four players who either held or was tied for the lead across a tightly contested final round at TPC Craig Ranch, which plays host to this week’s TOUR event beginning on Thursday. Popert was trying to land his 11 th championship on the All-Abilities circuit.
For historical purposes, this week marked the first official G4D Tour stop in the United States, one of nine stops on the 2024 circuit, and the 10 highly ranked players (eight men, two women) who attended from across the globe enjoyed the experience and hope that there will be more to follow.
With his left leg straightened and braced, there was little that Browne could do day-to-day. He could not drive, could not fly, had great difficulty trying to negotiate stairs and his overall quality of life plummeted. He said he contemplated ending his life by jumping out a second-story hospital window – if only his annoying leg brace would have allowed him to fit through it.
He ended up viewing a random poster promoting golf as an outlet for the disabled, and thought he’d try it once he made the astute decision to simplify his life by amputating the leg. He now plays using a prosthetic.

Browne had one of those early moments when first starting to hit golf balls on a range when he flushed a shot and got that "feel." The game just grabbed him. It hasn’t let him go, either, which is fortunate. He wakes up each day with goals, and golf gives him something to do. Browne, in fact, credits the game for not only changing his life, but saving it .
In an interview with the EDGA (organized in 2000, and formally known as the European Disabled Golf Association), Browne said of golf: “It gave me confidence. It just saved my life, really.”
He explained, “A lot of people think their life is over when they get injured, but I’m not the same. ‘That life’ (pre-injury) is done; I’ve got a new one now. Let’s make the most of it. That’s what I’m doing, and that’s what I’ve done."
Lachlan Wood (Australia), who overcame a horrendous car accident and spent five years away from golf before finding his way back, had opened with 72, and when he birdied the seventh and ninth holes, he moved into the lead midway through the final round. When Wood made two early bogeys on his back nine, Popert, Postigo Arce and Browne passed him at the top, all getting to even par shortly after the turn.
Browne got back in it with birdies at Nos. 10, 13 and 14. Postigo Arce, playing up ahead, birdied the 12th and 14th holes. Popert was heating up, too; he birdied three of his first four holes on his second nine. Brendan Lawlor of Ireland, a consistent contender among G4D competitors, made his own late move by shooting 3-under 33 on his final nine, but fell two shots shy of Browne, tying for fourth with Wood.
In the end, Browne, whose strength is his driving, just proved a tad steadier, and that showed in his finish. After a bogey at the par-3 15 th , he was mistake-free, doing what he had to do by making pars to win. It was his second big win in months, coming on the heels of winning the G4D Tour Season Finale in Dubai the week of the DP World World Tour Championship.
In Dubai, Browne posed on the 18 th green with his G4D champion's trophy alongside Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard, the tournament champion, and Rory McIlroy, who captured the Race to Dubai. Browne marvels at the experiences that golf has given him.

At his lowest point, when he figured he could take no more pain and all his social skills had vanished, Browne remembers sitting in his hospital bed and crying for three days straight. He knew he needed help, and that was the point he finally would ask for it. And then his life would take a starkly different turn when he saw a single golf poster.
On Tuesday in Texas, that time seemed so long ago.
Golf saved my life in that aspect,” he said. “It gave me everything that I was missing. It gave me purpose.”
On Tuesday, it gave him a great victory, and a small piece of history as the first G4D player to win an official Tour event in the United States. Best yet: At 46, Browne believes he is just getting started.

Home hero Yuto Katsuragawa romps to victory in Japan
Yuto Katsuragawa continued a history-making season for players from Japan on the DP World Tour with a three-shot victory on home soil at the ISPS HANDA - CHAMPIONSHIP .
The local favourite entered the final day at Taiheiyo Club Gotemba Course three shots off the lead but was right in the mix at the turn as many of the leading players stumbled.
Sebastian Söderberg was the only one keeping pace with him but the 25-year-old started the back nine with five birdies in seven holes to leave the Swede in his wake and finish at 17 under after a course-record equalling 63.
Söderberg carded a 67 to be the nearest challenger but all the headlines belonged to Katsuragawa, who made it back-to-back Japanese wins in regular DP World Tour events for the first time after Keita Nakajima's victory at the Hero Indian Open.
Isao Aoki was the first Japanese winner in DP World Tour history at the 1983 European Open but we had to wait 33 years for another when Hideki Matsuyama lifted the trophy at the 2016 WGC-HSBC Champions.
Matsuyama would lift another World Golf Championships title the following year before his monumental Masters Tournament victory in 2021 made it four all-time Japanese wins on the DP World Tour.
That tally has now doubled in just seven months, with Ryo Hisatsune's win at last season's Cazoo Open de France being followed by Rikuya Hoshino's 2024 victory at the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters and Nakajima and Katsuragawa's recent heroics.
Katsuragawa admits that he drew inspiration from the recent success of his compatriots. "Looking at them winning in Europe definitely motivated me," he said. "This tournament was held in Japan on a familiar course but I have not experienced winning abroad yet. I aim to win on a bigger stage internationally."
Katsuragawa's maiden DP World Tour win comes in just his fifth start and is his second in this event, having lifted the trophy in 2022 before it was co-sanctioned with the Japan Golf Tour Organisation.
He is now set to take up DP World Tour membership and will enter the top 25 on the Race to Dubai Rankings in Partnership with Rolex , with a long-term goal of achieving dual membership with the PGA TOUR.
"I have been practising a lot to stand on the big stage," he said. "I can now go on the DP World Tour which is really great and I'm really happy with it. I'm aiming to become a member of the PGA TOUR in the future.
"Basically, I embrace enjoying myself. Only a few pro golfers can travel abroad, so I want to travel a lot, enjoy myself, and play on many courses. I also hope to be a role model for children and juniors by becoming an international golfer."
This is an event he was focused on winning at the start of the season, and he admits nerves kicked in down the stretch. He added: "This is the tournament I wanted to win the most this year. I was very nervous on the back nine, my hands were shaking but I trusted myself and I managed to bring my golf.
"This course is beside Mount Fuji and very beautiful but it is a challenging course and I'm happy to win at a challenging course like this."
Söderberg made a three-putt at the second but hit back with a birdie at the par-five third after giving himself a good look at eagle and an approach to 12 feet on the fifth to get to 12 under.
Katsuragawa also took advantage of the third and a tap-in at the sixth would soon have him in a share of the lead as the final group faltered.
He was one behind Söderberg as the 33-year-old chipped in on the ninth but some stunning spin control at the tenth had him back in a share before Söderberg bogeyed the same hole after missing the green.
More wonderful iron play at the 12th extended the advantage to two and he then made a brilliant par save from a nasty lie on the 13th, with Söderberg birdieing the same hole from close range to trim the gap.
Katsuragawa found another gear, however, leaving himself eight feet at the 14th and holing a long putt at the next to lead by three.
Söderberg kept in touch with a birdie from close range on the 15th but Katsuragawa was relentless and a gain from off the green at the 16th was a third in a row as he eased to victory.
A runner-up finish for Söderberg moved him to the top of Asian Swing Rankings and should he stay there after next week's Volvo China Open, he will win $200,000 and gain entry to the Back Nine events, while also guaranteeing his place at the Genesis Scottish Open. Those who finish in positions one to three will also be exempt into the U.S. PGA Championship.
South African Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Spaniard Ivan Cantero, Japan's Ryosuke Kinoshita and German Marcel Schneider finished at 12 under, a shot clear of home duo Masahiro Kawamura and Yuta Sugiura, Northern Ireland's Tom McKibbin and Frenchman Tom Vaillant.
Nienaber moves clear on day three at Saadiyat Beach
Wilco Nienaber will take a two-stroke lead into the final round of the UAE Challenge after carding a three under par round of 69 on day three at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club.
