Natural Wonders Abound

Located along the equator on the eastern coast of Africa, Kenya’s motto of “Magical Kenya” implies something extra special and that’s exactly what you get. Kenya offers a diverse topographical landscape that encompasses dessert lands, savannahs, snowcapped mountains, lakes, valleys, volcanoes and white sandy beaches along its coast on the Indian Ocean with incredible activities suited to each. Although the capital city of Nairobi is as modern as they come, much of the culture of Kenya has remained timeless and unscathed by the fast past world of contemporary society. Being an African country one can’t help but think safari and Kenya offers all kinds. From, wildlife and big game, eco and marine, cultural, bird and even golf you will surely find that the activity of eating becomes a culinary safari all its own. There is such an abundance of natural fresh produce and cultural diversity that make the cuisine of this nation an adventure all its own.

Destination Must-See's

Kenya ms1

Karen Blixen Home (Out of Africa):

Karen Blixen is the author of the world renowned book Out of Africa. She left her home a long time ago, but it’s still there, preserved as a museum and open to visitors daily. See the place where the book happened and imagine what it was like to be Karen Blixen in her lovely farmhouse.

Kenya ms2

Lake Nakuru:

This lake has a wide variety of habitats and ecological diversity. The flamingo is a popular bird to see in the lake as well as other water birds. There are 56 different species and about 550 plant species. It also features a beautiful waterfall. There’s a lot to take in here!

Kenya ms3

Numerous game drives take you out to catch a glimpse of the “big 5” (lions, elephants, buffalo, leopards and rhinos). Kenya is a great place to be for spotting these magnificent animals, as large numbers of them call the region home. How many of each can you spot?

Kenya ms4

Aberdare National Park:

This is an ecologically diverse area with lush valleys and high peaks that reach up to 14,000 feet. It’s also home to some of Africa’s most exotic wildlife including two species only found north of the equator. Bring your binoculars and your camera. You won’t want to miss a thing!

Destination Must-Do's

Kenya md1

Life among this tribe of semi-nomadic pastoralists revolves around their cows, sheep, goats, and camels. Dressed in traditional red clothing, they are great cultural ambassadors who welcome tourists to participate in traditional ceremonies, food and dances. Pay them a visit and don’t forget to purchase a handcrafted souvenir to remember them by.

Kenya md2

Masai Mara:

This is the most popular reserve in all of Africa because there’s a lot to love about it. It has open savannas, big skies, wildebeest migrations, game, and a variety of birdlife to enjoy. The reserve is also the place where the film Out of Africa was shot, and home to the Masai people.

Giraffe Sanctuary:

Get up close and personal to feed the endangered Rothschild giraffes from a raised platform at the Giraffe Sanctuary. You’ll fall madly in love with these majestic and gentle giants. Sorry, they’re not up for adoption. They’re way too hard to bring home on the plane.

Kenya md4

Learn about Tenderfeet, a Collette Foundation:

We support the Tenderfeet School. This school is very important to the children in the area. It provides them with food, clothes, and education. There is a classroom for every grade up until sixth grade and they prepare the children for middle and high school. The dream is to build a foundation for a better life for all of the children, which is now possible thanks to the help of momma Margaret, the Collette Foundation and everyone who supports Tenderfeet.

Expert Advice

diana

As you safari through Africa, enjoy a casual dress style and be sure to pack comfortable walking shoes. It is recommended to bring lightweight fabrics that may be worn in layers which may be added or removed; it tends to be cool in the morning and warmer in the afternoon.

You're in for a culinary treat as you explore the cuisine of Africa. Enjoy unique meats, colorful vegetables and tropical fruits during your African safari tour. The rule of thumb here is -- if you can peel it, it is fine to eat.

Kenya e3

Day-by-day itinerary

elite tours kenya

Board your overnight flight to Nairobi today.

Welcome to Kenya! Arrive in Nairobi and transfer to your hotel.

Please note: Most flights from North America arrive late in the evening.

Climb into 4x4 land cruisers and set out to discover notable landmarks and local culture in and around Nairobi, Kenya’s bustling capital city.

  • Tour the Karen Blixen Estate, the former coffee plantation where the “Out of Africa” author lived for several years
  • Enjoy an included lunch this afternoon with your group
  • Visit Sandstorm Kenya, a company that began as a maker of safari tents and now employs 40 Maasai craftspeople who hand-make totes, backpacks, and other styles of bags from locally sourced canvas and leather
  • Tour Sandstorm’s facilities to learn how its bags are made, from the sourcing of materials to the finished product
  • Enter the National Museum of Kenya where you’ll explore exhibits that tell the country’s rich cultural and natural heritage

Tonight, get to know your Tour Director and fellow travelers at a welcome dinner served with beer or wine.

Take in sweeping views of the countryside as you journey to the Aberdares, which is a massif, or mountainous area, that lies just west of Mount Kenya National Park.

Enjoy lunch at Aberdare Country Club as zebras, gazelles, warthogs, and other wild animals roam nearby before continuing on to your hotel in the Mount Kenya region. After freshening up, sit down this evening for an included dinner served with beer or wine.

Travel through scenic, highland landscapes—and make a photo stop at the equator —on your way to the Great Rift Valley. This astoundingly beautiful region is an important center of ecological study, and its sparkling lakes and steep, rocky escarpments serve as havens for wildlife such as black rhinos, rare Rothschild giraffes, and more than a dozen globally threatened bird species.

  • Continue on to the vast and ancient Lake Naivasha, which, at nearly 6,200 feet above sea level, is the highest of the Great Rift Valley’s three best-known lakes
  • Enjoy an included lunch with your fellow travelers at a local restaurant
  • Join a naturalist guide for an optional game walk near Lake Naivasha, which gets most of its fresh water from the Malewa River that flows from the Aberdare Mountains
  • Keep your eyes peeled for zebras, giraffes, hippos, fish eagles, pelicans, kingfishers, cormorants, flamingos, and other animals and birds as you walk

Please note: For the game walk, travelers should be comfortable walking over grassy paths for one to two hours.

This evening, sit down for an included dinner served with beer or wine.

Travel to Lake Nakuru, one of the Great Rift Valley’s “soda lakes,” or extremely salty, alkaline bodies of water where fish can’t survive. Spot some of the many flamingos who make their home here.

Take a morning game drive in a 4x4 land cruiser through Lake Nakuru National Park

Keep an eye out for wildlife, such as zebras, monkeys, and both black and white rhinos

Enjoy an included lunch at a lodge near Lake Nakuru

Head back to your safari lodge and sit down for this evening’s included dinner, served with beer or wine.

Continue through the Great Rift Valley as you travel to the Maasai Mara, a nearly 600-square-mile national reserve in southwestern Kenya known for its vast plains and abundant wildlife. The region is also home to the Maasai people, an indigenous tribe of semi-nomadic pastoralists whose livelihood revolves around cattle. The Maasai tribe’s signature—and symbolic—red-and-blue clothing and colorful, beaded jewelry are among many traditions its people have maintained, while other tribes have adopted more modern styles of living.

  • Enjoy an included lunch at your tented safari camp
  • Set out on an afternoon game drive

Try to spot leopards, rhinos, Cape buffalo, lions, and elephants—known collectively as the Big Five

Admire the Maasai Mara’s rolling hills, swaying savanna grasses, and iconic acacia trees

Sit down for an included dinner this evening, served with beer or wine.

Today, get to know the awe-inspiring animals and people of the Maasai Mara.

  • Rise before the sun for an early morning game drive—an exhilarating opportunity to spot lions, elephants, and other animals starting their day in search of food
  • Head back to your tented safari camp for an included lunch
  • After lunch, climb aboard a safari vehicle for an afternoon game drive, keeping your eyes peeled for prides of lions snoozing in the shade, giraffes ambling among leafy trees, and sturdy warthogs trotting through tall grass

Later, immerse yourself in the Maasai way of life during a visit to a local boma, or Maasai homestead.

  • Join male members of the Maasai tribe in their signature adamu, or jumping dance
  • Tour a functioning Maasai boma—a collection of mud-hut homes—and discover the tribe’s history and heritage
  • Visit a market where Maasai people sell handiworks and crafts, and learn how money from visitors’ purchases sustains the tribe
  • Receive your own Maasai name and learn the meaning behind it

Spend the morning relaxing and catching up on sleep, or add an excursion.

Then, admire Kenya’s dramatic scenery as you travel through the Great Rift Valley back to Nairobi, stopping along the way for an included lunch.

This evening, sit down for an included dinner in Nairobi, served with beer or wine.

Maasai Mara Hot Air Balloon Ride

From $449 per person

Travel south to Amboseli National Park today. This roughly 150-square-mile natural area sits against the breathtaking backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro, and is known for its population of wild African elephants.

  • Enjoy an included lunch at your safari lodge or camp
  • Set out on an afternoon game drive after lunch
  • Ride along with your expert driver and naturalist guide in search of elephants, leopards, lions, baboons, cheetahs, wild dogs, buffaloes, kudus, hippos, rhinos, wildebeest, and dozens more animals

Join your fellow tour mates for an included dinner this evening, served with beer or wine.

This morning, head out on your first game drive of the day and marvel at Amboseli National Park’s huge herds of elephants, as well as ostriches, leopards, lions, and rhinos.

This afternoon, join your group for an included lunch before your second game drive through Amboseli National Park.

Celebrate your trip at tonight’s farewell dinner, served with beer or wine.

Transfer to Nairobi this morning. Then, relax in a dayroom before boarding your flight home tonight or early tomorrow morning, or extend your stay to explore Tanzania.

Arrive home today.

Stop in the city of Arusha for an included lunch, then continue on to Tarangire National Park, where you’ll marvel at one of Africa’s largest elephant herds and keep watch for more than 500 species of birds.

Later, set out on an afternoon game drive. This evening, sit down for an included dinner, served with beer or wine.

Begin today with a visit to Olduvai Gorge. Nicknamed the “Cradle of Mankind,” this site is where British paleoanthropologists and archaeologists Louis and Mary Leakey excavated 1.8 million-year-old human fossil fragments in 1959. Cap off your tour with a scenic picnic lunch.

After lunch, continue to Serengeti National Park, a nearly 5,800-square-mile UNESCO World Heritage Site and true natural wonder. The park’s southern reaches play a key role in the Great Migration, a spectacular and cyclical year-round event during which nearly 2 million wildebeest travel between Tanzania and Kenya to procreate and to search for food and water. This afternoon, set out on a game drive through the park, spotting wildebeest, buffaloes, lions, and other animals from your safari vehicle.

This evening, sit down for an included dinner, served with beer or wine.

Continue your exploration of the Serengeti’s endless plains on two game drives.

Look for the exceedingly rare black rhino on your morning game drive

Feast on an included lunch in the open air of the Serengeti

  • Embark on an afternoon game drive to see the Moru Kopjes, stunning granite formations rising out of the plains

Enjoy an included dinner this evening with your group, served with beer and wine.

Transfer to the 3 million-year-old Ngorongoro Crater. Covering more than 100 square miles, it’s the world’s largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera, and a vital food and water source for wildlife.

  • Enjoy lunch before heading out on an afternoon game drive
  • Descend in your safari vehicle 1,000 feet into Ngorongoro Crater, which is home to one of the world’s densest lion populations
  • Observe an array of animals, including hippos, rhinos, zebras, jackals, and endangered wild hunting dogs, on a game drive

This morning, leave the natural splendor of the Ngorongoro Crater behind and make your way back to Arusha—capital of the Arusha region and home to more than 400,000 residents.

  • Join a local guide for a tour of Shanga Foundation, a social enterprise that employs locals with physical disabilities to craft jewelry, glassware, and homewares incorporating recycled materials
  • See how Shanga Foundation artisans use recycled materials and sustainable production methods to make their goods
  • Browse Shanga Foundation’s shop for locally made keepsakes to take home

Following your visit to Shanga Foundation, walk to a nearby coffee plantation.

  • Sit down for an included lunch on the coffee plantation’s grounds
  • After lunch, take a guided tour of the coffee farm to learn how coffee beans are grown, harvested, dried, and produced into the beloved beverage
  • Taste a variety of coffees produced on site

Tonight, sit down at your Arusha lodge to toast your East Africa travels over a farewell dinner, served with beer or wine.

Transfer to Nairobi’s airport for your flight home.

Physical Activity Level

This is a high physical activity-level tour. You can expect to be on the move on a regular basis throughout the course of the tour.

Tour Pacing

This is a very fast-paced tour. The pace of a tour itinerary considers how often you’ll switch hotels, the amount of planned daily activities, and how you’ll get from place to place. You can expect:

  • Two 1-night stays
  • Most days and evenings full of included activities (more if you add excursions)
  • Most transportation by 4x4 landcruiser safari vehicles
  • Some transportation by motor coach

Walking, Terrain & Physical Requirements

  • This tour requires minimal walking. When walking occurs it is over mostly flat terrain, some paved roads, unpaved trails, and dirt paths.
  • Travelers can expect to spend 6-8 hours each day in the game drive vehicle.
  • Travelers should feel comfortable stepping up and down or climbing a small ladder to get in an our of the vehicles.
  • Travelers should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance.
  • Please Note: Adding optional excursions may increase the total amount of walking on tour.

Climate Considerations

  • Temperatures are consistent year round, but vary significantly morning to afternoon, especially at higher altitude regions
  • Travelers should be prepared for cold mornings and evenings (40sF-50sF) with mild afternoons of 70F-mid 80sF
  • Kenya experiences two rainy seasons, masika, which is mid-March through May, and vuli, November-December.
  • Travelers on the Tanzania extension can expect similar weather conditions

Physical Activity & Tour Pace Questions

  • Go Ahead Tours and the Tour Director who accompanies your group are unable to provide special mobility or luggage handling assistance to travelers on tour. The responsibility of the Tour Director is to ensure the group enjoys a smooth and informative journey, and they can’t be relied on to provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • This tour moves at a reasonable pace to avoid missing scheduled stops. The rest of the group cannot miss any scheduled activities because of the needs of an individual.
  • Due to the pace and physical activity level of this tour, mobility aids such as wheelchairs or walkers will be difficult to use and are not recommended. Please notify Go Ahead Tours before your departure if you plan to bring these on tour with you.
  • If you have mobility concerns or tour pace questions, please visit our Help Center or send a message to our Customer Experience Team. We’re here to help!
  • Most of the transportation on this tour will be via 4X4 landcruiser safari vehicle.
  • The vehicle is open, allowing for panoramic views. Window seats are guaranteed for all travelers.
  • 4x4 landcruiser’s have high step(s) to board the vehicle.
  • Transfers between parks are long and cross bumpy terrain, so we recommend bringing a small pillow to ease the ride and the impact that may have on a body.
  • Safari luggage restrictions are strict and strongly enforced. It’s essential that your luggage meet the below requirements:
  • Travelers should bring a soft, flexible duffel bag. No hard suitcases or bags with hard sides are permitted.
  • Bags can be no larger than 34” W by 17” H by 15.” Total baggage weight cannot exceed 44 pounds.
  • One small carry-on bag is also permitted.
  • Contact your airline for baggage size and weight restrictions for your flight, but please note that our travelers are restricted to one checked bag per person due to storage limitations on safari vehicles.
  • Make sure you label your baggage and keep valuables, medication, and documents in your carry-on bag
  • Travelers must manage their own luggage throughout tour as porters are not guaranteed. This includes at hotels and airports.
  • We recommend packing loose-fitting, layered clothing that can accommodate varying temperatures. Quick-dry material is best for hot days outside and a warmer layer may be needed for chilly evenings and early mornings.
  • Wear muted colors for game drives, as bright clothing may scare animals away and blue or black clothing attracts tsetse flies.
  • Comfortable closed-toes shoes, such as sneakers or lightweight hiking boots, are best for walking during the day.
  • Pack a swimsuit as many of the hotels have pools that you are free to use at your leisure.
  • Sun protection is very important. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a broad-brimmed hat to protect your face and the back of your neck from the sun.
  • Occasional rain showers are common during certain seasons, so lightweight rainwear may be necessary depending on the timing of your trip.
  • Mosquito repellent, binoculars, and a flashlight are highly recommended.
  • A small bottle of hand sanitizer may be helpful when other facilities are not readily available while on the road.
  • The Kenyan government has a strict ban on plastic bags. It is illegal to use, sell, or carry plastic bags anywhere in the country under the new law, and violators will face charges including high fines or imprisonment. Please bring reusable cloth bags if you plan to go shopping on tour, and do not pack any plastic bags, including small resealable bags.
  • Transfers between parks are long and cross bumpy terrain, so we recommend bringing a small pillow to ease the ride.
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using your own hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.
  • We recommend packing your Insurance Card (from your primary insurance provider) in your carry on luggage.
  • Go Ahead handpicks every hotel to strike the balance of comfort, location, and local charm.
  • Accommodations are typically three and four star hotels.
  • All accommodations include a private bathroom.
  • Most rooms will include a safe for valuables.

There is no limit on importing currency into Kenya, but please note travelers are restricted from carrying more than $100,000 in Kenyan shillings out of the country (and cannot export more than $5,000 in Tanzanian shillings from Tanzania on the tour extension).
  • We recommend that you carry small amounts of U.S. dollars (only crisp bills printed in 2004 or later, $1, $5, $10 bills are ideal).
  • ATMs are most readily available in Nairobi; while there, we recommend taking out cash in small bills to have on safari.
  • Major North American credit cards are accepted but can be difficult to use in remote locations (Visa is the most widely accepted).
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you do not already have at least one debit or credit card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • We suggest that you inform your bank and credit card company of your travel plans, so that they won’t confuse your international purchases for fraudulent charges.
  • Plan ahead and bring cash to tip your tour director, local guides, and bus drivers.
  • To ensure you feel prepared before traveling on tour, we strongly recommend you download the EF Go Ahead Tours mobile app. The app is free and provides important deadlines, entry requirements, your detailed itinerary, packing tips and more. • As needed, On Tour Support can facilitate additional support for travelers on tour, arrange assistance from outside specialists, and liaise with local and international authorities to help solve on-the-ground issues. In addition, the team is dedicated to supporting and facilitating communication between travelers and families in the event of an emergency while on the road or at home.
  • Kenya (and Tanzania on the tour extension) is 3 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and 8 hours ahead of U.S. Eastern Standard Time (ET).
  • When it’s noon in New York, it’s 8pm on tour.
  • When you travel with EF Go Ahead Tours, you’ll make a positive impact on the places you visit, and the people and animals you meet along the way. That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer.
  • Travel, when done responsibly, can make an enormous socio-economic impact to communities. To maximize your impact, eat at locally owned restaurants and shop at local businesses. Ask your Tour Director to point out restaurants they recommend.
  • Prepare for your trip: be aware of the monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market, learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette, and take some time to learn a few words in the local language.
  • When interacting with locals, make sure to ask people for permission before you take their picture, and approach cultural differences with empathy and an open mind.
  • EF Go Ahead Tours encourages our travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single use plastics. You can avoid single use plastics by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle.
  • Environment: When visiting national parks, reserves, or other protected areas, please do not remove anything from the natural environment or leave any litter. Carry out what you carried in.
  • Animal Welfare: Take the philosophies of World Animal Protection to heart during included tour activities and your free time. Do not touch, do not feed, and maintain a respectful distance from wild animals. Wild animals encountered on tour should be able to exhibit natural forms of behavior. If you feel we are not meeting these commitments, please share your feedback with us.
  • Animal Welfare: Avoid buying any exploitative wildlife products such as tortoise shell or shark fin soup.

Kenya Tours & Travel

Kenya Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Kenya, the heart of the former British East Africa, was the setting for the books and films “Born Free,” “Out of Africa” and many others. As a result, countless Westerners have been inspired to experience a Kenyan safari  for themselves. If you’re one of them, Kenya may be the right country for you.

Its modern capital, Nairobi, provides a good transition when flying in and out, but the real action is in the savannahs and valleys of the south, the semi-arid deserts of the north, and the 300-mile-long Indian Ocean coast to the east, with its lovely beaches and intriguing Swahili culture.

Top National Parks in Kenya

Kenya has numerous National Parks, filled with beautiful scenery, botany, and animals.

Check out these parks on your Kenyan Adventure:

1. Mt.  Kenya  - this is the second tallest mountain in Africa . The surrounding area is filled with lakes, glaciers, dense forest and animals. Activities include mountain climbing, camping, and animal spotting.

2. Amboseli National Park -  known as the “home of the African Elephant,” and is one of the best viewing areas to see herds of animals. Sitting by Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro , there is a variety of habitats in the National park, including wetlands, savannah, and a dried-up lake bed.

For travelers looking for a local, authentic, cultural experience, visit the nearby Maasai community. Wildlife includes leopards, cheetahs, buffalo, elephants, giraffes, zebras, lions, and crocodiles.

3. Nairobi National Park -  sitting about an hour outside of Nairobi, this makes for an easy day trip from the city. Experience the wildlife (including black rhinos, leopards, lions, buffalo, and giraffes) running through the wide open grass plains, with the city skyline in the background.

4. Samburu National Reserve -  a game reserve that sits on the banks of the Ewaso Ng’iro river in the Rift Valley area of Kenya. The park is noted for being quiet and serene, since it’s distance and inaccessible prevented major tourism for a while. While the park is home to the normal big five, there are rare species that are exclusive to the park, including Grevy’s zebra, and Kenya leopard.

5. Maasai  Mara National Park - one of the most famous safari parks in the world, and is known for its high density of lions and leopards. Many visitors come to Maasai Mara to watch the Great Migration that happens during the dry season (July-October). This reserve is also located in the Great Rift Valley. Most visitors of Maasai Mara are likely to see all of the big five because of the abundant wildlife.

Wildlife on a Kenya Safari

Like most African Safaris , there is a good chance that all five of the “big five” will live in the park. The big five include lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo, and rhinos. Other common animals on Kenya Safaris include zebra, the African impala, giraffe, warthogs, and wildebeest.

I n July-October, there is the Great Migration , where millions of animals (wildebeest, zebras, and gazelle) move up from Tanzania into Kenya. Of course, visitors will still be able to spot these animals throughout the year, but it’s a magical experience to witness the Great Migration.

No two safaris are the same, even if you go on multiple game drives in one day. Each drive offers an opportunity to see different animals. With that, there is no guarantee you’ll see every animal on every drive.

Regardless, little compares to the serenity and beauty of seeing wildlife roaming free. A lot of animals spend time in the shade midday, as the sun is hot. Consider safaris that offer sunrise and/or sunset tours, which is when most animals are out walking around. If you do go on a safari during the afternoon, keep a lookout under trees, and above branches, as they like to relax in the shady spots.

Luxury safaris in Kenya

For travelers who want to get out and see the animals and the wild, but may be hesitant about “roughing it” or sleeping out in a tent, a luxury safari may be the perfect solution! There are plenty of lodges that have actual bedrooms, viewing decks, provide breakfast, lunch and dinner, and even have spas and pools!

For those who are looking for a bit more of a “tent luxury safari,” consider a stay at the Angama Mara . The individual tents are made up of one glass wall that look over the rift valley. The other three walls, and the roof, are made up of canvas. Walk out the sliding glass door onto the deck incredible views of the valley. Feel the fresh air at night and hear the wild, by sleeping with the sliding door open. There is a mesh door that can be latched for safety.

Luxury safaris can start in the low hundreds (American dollars) per room per night, and can climb into the thousands, per night! Having all meals provided, and safaris with knowledgeable guides included are usually worth the high costs of luxury safaris .

Kenyan Cuisine

One of the best parts about traveling is getting to try new foods!

Here are some of the must try foods for anyone visiting Kenya:

1. Ugali -  Known as Kenya’s most common food staple, Ugali is often made from cornmeal that is mixed with boiling water. The cornmeal is heating until it forms a block of cornmeal paste. It’s heavy and feels like a grainy dough. Ugali is often eaten with mixed vegetable or stew.

2. Irio  - another famous dish in Kenya. Green peas and potatoes are boiled and mashed up before mixing with corn. Combine the mixture with some roasted nyama choma meat and serve. For vegetarians, substitute the meat for some stew.

3. Wali wa Nazi -  a more popular food found on the coast along the Indian Ocean. White rice is cooked with grated coconut, giving it a fun hint of flavor. This food is often served with fish, chicken curry, vegetables, or stew.

4. Nyama Choma -  also known as roasted meat, is another popular food choice in Kenya. While the most common forms of nyama choma is goat and beef meat, there are also chicken and fish options. The roasted meat is combined with salt for a little bit of extra flavoring. Some places offer an option for the meat to be “fried” rather than roasted.

5. Chips  Mayai -  also known as a French fry omelet, is a combination of French fries that are mixed with beaten eggs. Pop the “fries” (or chips) in the pan, cover with the beaten egg, and cook.

This dish is often served with chili tomato sauce. Tomato sauce and fries are a popular combination in Kenya. Other options include Kenyan Bajias (French-fries with tomato salsa) or Masala Chips (French-frieds with tomato and chili sauce, herbs, and whatever other foods the chef decides to throw in.

6. Mandazi  - this makes a great snack, breakfast, or dessert option. This deep fried dough is basically a Kenyan doughnut. Any doughnut lover should be on the lookout to try Mandazi when in Kenya

Masai and Merchants

Kenya is diverse: scattered among the most populous native tribespeople (such as Kikuyu, Luo, Meru, Samburu), you’ll find Masai warriors in their red tribal garments the far south, black-robed Muslim women on Lamu Island, merchants from China and east India along the coast, British expats in Nairobi, and global archaeologists and anthropologists out in the field. The only thing excluded from that list are the visitors from around the world who come to view and photograph some of the most remarkable wildlife on earth -- they can be found nearly everywhere.

If you book with an experienced safari operator, you can expect to see all or most of these creatures in their natural settings: lions, elephants, giraffes, Cape buffalo, rhinos (both white and black), hippos, leopards, cheetahs, zebras, wildebeest, hyenas, warthogs, ostriches, flamingos, and many more.

While it’s not necessary to visit a half-dozen different game parks to see most of the animals you want to see, tours that take you to several distinct parts of this fascinating country have the advantage of allowing you to drink in views of some of the most extraordinary landscapes on earth. The volcanic, lake-pocked Rift Valley , the vast sprawling savannahs, the red-tinged soils and desert sands of the interior, the turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean – all combine to create magical backdrops that are doubly enhanced by glimpses of giraffes galloping by the roadway or the sounds of elephants marching and trumpeting in the distance.

The Great Migration

While most everyone would like to be in Kenya in late summer and early fall for the Great Migration of wildebeest, zebras and Thomson’s gazelles racing north from Tanzania’s Serengeti Plains into Maasai Mara National Reserve , don’t overlook the quieter pleasures of game-viewing at Meru National Park or Samburu National Reserve in northern Kenya. Other great spots can be found in the wide-open spaces of vast Tsavo East and West national parks to the south.

The January-February dry season is ideal for these parks, but even during the spring rainy season game viewing can be productive and rewarding, especially in the hands of expert guides. To help you find those guides, Stride offers an ever-expanding list of reputable safari tour operators who respect the environment and know how to find the animals and the best angles for photographing them.

With a wide selection available, you’re sure to find the right Kenyan safari to suit your level of adventurousness and budget. And before you know it, you’ll be starring in your own production of “Into Africa.”

Texas Volleyball Wraps Up European Tour Ahead of 24-25 Season

Isa almeida | 13 hours ago.

Texas outside hitter Madisen Skinner celebrates after a point with her team during the Longhorns' match against the Cougars, Sept. 28, 2023 in Gregory Gymnasium. Texas dropped the first set to the Cougars, but won the next three for a victory at home in Austin.

Back-to-back national champions Texas Volleyball have to play against the best to be the best.

In the span of three weeks, the Longhorns traveled to four countries to face European national teams and clubs.

The first stop was home to a Texas legend. Logan Eggleston’s worlds collided when her college team played her professional team Galatasaray’s under-19 team. The Longhorns came out on top 4-0, but had one more round in Istanbul. Against the Club World Champion’s Eczasibasi Dynavit under-19 team, the Horns fought on for a 3-2 victory. Freshman Ayden Ames scored the match point for Texas ahead of her first collegiate season.

In Budapest, the national champions challenged the Hungarian national team. With Keonilei Akana in the black libero jersey, and Madisen Skinner back from the Nations League , Texas tied 3-3 with the hosts.

OK Nova KBM Branik hosted the Longhorns in Maribor, Slovenia. The games didn’t follow the traditional competitive best-of-five format as to allow the teams to play around with the lineups. Texas won both games 4-1 and 3-2.

Last stop in the team’s summer trip was Italy. In Busta Arizio, Texas played first division Italian team UYBA Busto Arizio and won 3-1. In the final game in Milan, the opponents were the Italian Junior National Team.

The European journey allowed head coach Jerritt Elliott to watch how his team competes against different styles of play overseas, and try different combinations with returning players, transfers and freshmen.

Texas’ path to a first SEC championship and third consecutive national championship starts in August.
