Tourist Club Area (TCA) is now known by its new name Al Zahiyah . The area is on the eastern side of Abu Dhabi . It is one of the downtown areas of the capital city and enjoys a prime location at the centre of Corniche Road East and Al Falah Street . The community has high-rise buildings and towers . Tourist Club Area is centrally located in Abu Dhabi. Living in this area represents the essence of living in a cosmopolitan neighbourhood , as the city of Abu Dhabi is the second largest populated emirate of the UAE .

This residential space of Al Zahiyah features different towers built in a traditional style back in 1968 . The Abu Dhabi Municipality identified such buildings and demolished them to make sure the area gives a true representation of modern transformation that Abu Dhabi is going through. There were new buildings built which gave the area a new contemporary look.

PROPERTIES IN TOURIST CLUB AREA

Since 2014, most of the streets of Abu Dhabi have been renamed. The Tourist Club Area was renamed as Al Zahiyah which means “the colourful and bright” . The old buildings demolished in 2014 are now being replaced or renovated. New skyscrapers are added to the real estate market and the area has become more accommodating with improved spaces and an increased number of apartments.

The properties in the Tourist Club Area are mainly high-rise buildings . Apartments here range from studios to 4-bedroom flats . The studio apartments in Tourist Club Area have built-in wardrobes in the bedroom while the spacious living room is connected with an open American kitchen. The flooring of the whole apartment is ceramic. The occupants can easily access the facilities of the community which include a swimming pool, shared gym and underground basement parking. Tenants can also take in the views of the sea from the terrace. A 4-bedroom apartment is evidently more spacious and comes with more amenities. The bedrooms have en-suite washrooms and built-in wardrobes . The entrance door of the flat leads to the huge living room and dining area . It also has a separate maid’s room and guest room. The facilities offered in the buildings include 24 hours security concierge and CCTV monitoring .

Rental trends in Tourist Club Area

The annual rent for studio apartments is AED 38k, on an average. These units span around 400 sq. ft. to 600 sq. ft. and feature a spacious living hall, kitchen and fitted bathroom.

The rent of 1-bed flats in Tourist Club Area fluctuates between AED 32k to AED 55k, yearly. 2 BHK flats for rent cost AED 58k on average, per annum. Whereas, 3-bedroom rental apartments in this area are priced around AED 85k at the maximum.

Likewise, renting 4-bed flats in Tourist Club Area will cost more than AED 90k. The buildings closer to the old structures have lower rents as compared to the ones which are newly constructed and offer the picturesque views of the Abu Dhabi Corniche from the balcony.

Public Transportation in Tourist Club Area

This area can easily be reached through taxis as there are plenty in Abu Dhabi. However, there are a few buses as well that takes you to the Tourist Club Area. Bus 11, 40, 7 and 8 have nearby stops at Sheikh Zayed Street, Firdous Street and Street 9.

AMENITIES, SCHOOLS AND HEALTHCARE

Tourist Club Area is located near the crowded areas of Mina Zayed Port and Marina Beach and there are many schools, hospitals, dining places and supermarkets within walking distance. The area also has several stores, eateries, bars, shopping centres, arcades, lodgings and a sports complex.

SUPERMARKETS IN TOURIST CLUB AREA

There are many small marts and supermarkets in the Tourist Club Area. Within the vicinity, Quick Stop Super Market, Bigmart Supermarket, Zoom mart, Millennium Supermarket and Grandiose Supermarket can be spotted. These supermarkets in Tourist Club Area are within walking distance and provide all basic supplies.

CHURCHES, TEMPLES AND MOSQUES IN TOURIST CLUB AREA

Abu Dhabi’s population is made up of many expats from different religious backgrounds. There are few churches along with plenty of mosques in the capital city. There are no churches within the community but there is Cornerstone International Church at Al Reem Street which is 10 minutes away. However, within a 20 minutes drive, there are many different churches in the Al Mushrif district.

There is also no temple in the area, but there is the upcoming Hindu Mandir which is promised to be completed in 2021 . It will be 32 minutes away, near Al Rahba. Sikh residents can head to Mussafah where there is the New Gurudwara Abu Dhabi , roughly 25 minutes away.

Unlike churches and temples, there are plenty of mosques in the Tourist Club Area. Khalifa bin Zayed Mosque is in the centre of the community. While Thani Bin Mohammed Mosque, Abu Haitham Mosque, Mosque Ahmed Jaber Al Hamli and Mosque Of Sheikh Hazza Bin Sultan are some other mosques in Tourist Club Area.

SCHOOLS IN TOURIST CLUB AREA

It is a place which is built keeping the needs of families in mind that is why there are many schools in the Tourist Club Area. One can find Abu Dhabi Grammar School (Canada) which follows the Nova Scotian curriculum in accordance with the Ministry of Education. GEMS Winchester School Abu Dhabi , GEMS World Academy, Al Muna Academy , Abu Dhabi International Private School, The Pearl Academy, Repton Foundation School and German International School are names of few schools located in the nearby communities and follow different curriculums. The Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi is located on Al Reem Island, just 10 minutes away from Al Zahiyah.

English Plus Language & Training Center and Classic Music & Art Institute are also situated nearby. For Islamic education, Madaris Al Emarate Al Watani Majma Maskar Al Nahyan is also adjacent to the area.

HOSPITALS AND CLINICS IN TOURIST CLUB AREA

There are many hospitals and clinics in the area to cater to the health needs of residents. Aster Clinic, Consultants Medical Center, Elaj Medical Center, Miami Emirates Medical Center, Adam & Eve Specialized Medical Center, NMC General Clinics and King’s College Hospital London Medical and Surgical Center are some of the nearest healthcare centres.

Some specialised clinics can also be reached such as Al Ahlia Dental Clinic and Homeopathic Medical Clinic . There is one veterinary clinic close to the area as well which is New Veterinary Clinic . Al Salama Hospital in Tourist Club Area is a reputed option, the Corniche Maternity Hospital is also located nearby.

NEARBY AREAS

Along with neighbouring Al Maryah Island , Al Reem Island and Zayed Port, Corniche Beach is also a few minutes away from the Tourist Club Area. It is a favourite among residents who like cycling, walking and jogging along the soft stretch of golden sand. Many families are also found enjoying the amenities of the beach.

SHOPPING, DINING AND NIGHTLIFE

Other than that, there is Abu Dhabi Mall with over 200 stores, Madinat Zayed Shopping Centre and Al Wahda Mall which are not more than 15 minutes away from the Tourist Club Area.

RESTAURANTS IN TOURIST CLUB AREA

Foodies will love this area as there are countless dining places and bistros. Roberto’s Restaurant and Lounge, The Foundry, Pizza Express, P.F Chang’s, Le Parisian Restaurant, Chili’s and Chappan Bhog . Other popular restaurants in Tourist Club Area include Salaam Bombay Vegetarian Restaurant and Tim Hortons are some neighbouring eateries that serve a variety of cuisines. Plus, there are small cafeterias in the area that serve high-tea snacks.

Popular fine-dining restaurants are located in the Beach Rotana Hotel . These include Indigo , it is known for its traditional Indian menu, Benihana , a popular Japanese restaurant known for its tableside theatrics and Finz which offers many seafood dishes.

BEACHES NEAR TOURIST CLUB AREA

Residents of the Tourist Club Area can also enjoy the beauty of the serene Abu Dhabi beaches. Hardly 8 minutes away is the Abu Dhabi Beach for families, while Al Sahil Beach is 10 minutes away and for individuals only. Al Bateen Beach which overlooks the mesmerising Hudayriat Island and has the Blue Flag sustainability award is somewhat at a distance of 22 minutes from the area.

LEISURE ACTIVITIES AND LANDMARKS

Tourist Club Area or Al Zahiyah is surrounded by many souks, supermarkets, malls, islands, cinemas and beaches . Unlike many other areas, this area is crowded and gives an essence of true city-life to its inhabitants.

The monumental canon in Al Ittihad Square is at 8 minutes’ drive. The tourist’s favourite spot, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is less than 20 minutes away from Tourist Club Area while Yas Island which is known the world’s best recreational treats is at half an hour drive only. Other entertainment options such as cinemas are also on within a few minutes drive as Al Wahda Mall has a cinema inside it and is located 20 minutes away from the Tourist Club Area.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES, FITNESS AND BEAUTY

Tourist Club Area is a prime example that Abu Dhabi is truly transformed in the last decade. There are many malls, parks and hotels that have opened here and have become a source of entertainment for the residents.

For people who like outdoor activities, there is Tourist Club Office Park which is a community park in the area but that is not the only option. Abu Dhabi Baladiya Park, Electra Park and Capital Garden Park are also in the vicinity. The list also does not stop here, Delma Park, Al Khaldiya Park and Family Water Park are also less than 10 minutes away. These parks also have special jogging and cycling tracks just like Corniche Beach .

Tourist Club Area is well-suited for fitness enthusiasts because numerous gyms can be spotted in the area. Las Vegas Gym tops the chart which is located near Smokes Center. Lifeline Wellness is 5 minutes away, it is very well equipped. Fitness The Gym, Champions Gym, Force Gym and Top Gym are a few gyms that are closely situated within a 5-minute drive.

As far as salons and parlours are concerned, there are plenty in the area. Hajir Ladies Moroccan Bath, Ghazal Gulf Ladies Salon and Quieter Ladies Salon are all less than 5 minutes away. For men, there is Black Horse Gents Salon and Elite Salon within the area.

Those who want to live a city-centric life with all the amenities within their reach should surely consider the Tourist Club Area to settle down. It is a mixed-culture community and home to expats belonging to different nations and beliefs. Expats, however, cannot purchase property in the area.

Emirates Islamic has announced the inauguration of its new main branch in Abu Dhabi, located at Wave Tower in the Khalidiya Corniche area. The branch was officially inaugurated in the presence of Sheikh Sorour bin Mohamed Al Nahyan; Hesham Abdulla Al Qassim, chairman of Emirates Islamic and vice chairman and managing director of Emirates NBD; Salah Amin, CEO of Emirates Islamic; Noura Al Suwaidi, director general of the General Women's Union and other senior bank management and officials. Commenting on the inauguration, Hesham Abdulla Al Qassim, said: "We are delighted to announce the opening of our new branch in Abu Dhabi, which reinforces our commitment to strengthening our presence throughout the country and in the capital. With our expanding network in Abu Dhabi, Emirates Islamic is well-positioned to capitalise on the UAE capital's status as a financial hub in the wider Middle East region." The inauguration of the new branch - which offers Retail, Priority, Business and Corporate Banking services - brings the total number of Emirates Islamic branches in the UAE to 59, with nine branches operational in Abu Dhabi. Salah Amin, CEO of Emirates Islamic, said: "We are delighted to enhance our capability to support the banking needs of Abu Dhabi-based businesses and individuals. Our expanded network in the capital reflects our strategy of increasing the footprint of Islamic banking across the UAE and become the preferred Islamic bank of the nation." A disappearing way of life: inside Abu Dhabi's old Tourist Club

With the demolition of high-rises built in the post-oil boom, abu dhabi's oldest residents cling to community ways.

Abu Dhabi tower demolition: calls for more clarity on tenant rights

Hamdallah Ali first set foot in Tourist Club in 1968, a time when takeaway dinners meant going fishing. Mr Ali had come from Cairo, Egypt, to visit his friend and when he suggested they go out for a meal, his friend reached for fishing hooks and a reel.

“We cannot eat out,” Mr Ali’s friend told him. “There is no restaurant, nowhere to eat.”

Mr Ali stayed for two weeks.

“Then I ran,” says Mr Ali. “There was nothing here.”

When Mr Ali moved permanently to Abu Dhabi, 15 years later, the city’s eastern quarter known as Tourist Club was expanding rapidly as the oil-led construction boom transformed the country’s capital.

By the late 1970s, cranes filled the skies. But the side-roads and areas around many of the buildings were still sand.

Tourist Club is now undergoing another major transformation as boom-time buildings reach the end of their lifespan. Last month, the municipality announced it had demolished 220 buildings and earmarked another 272 for removal.

This overhaul was brought to the forefront after the emergency evacuation of a 13-storey building of more than 100 of its residents due to structural damage.

“They say by 2020 there will not be any old buildings here,” Mr Ali says. “All of this side of Abu Dhabi, it will be new.”

Tourist Club was always an informal name, one that puzzled new arrivals to the city because it referred to the long-demolished entertainment centre that once sat beside Le Meridien Hotel.

Today, it’s clear that even this historic neighbourhood has not been immune from modernisation. New hotels and malls have opened. Modern street names were introduced and, in 2014, the area was renamed Al Zahiyah, "the bright" or "colourful". And now, the handful of older buildings that survive from the first wave of construction are either being renovated or replaced.

But flickers of old Tourist Club remain. Stand in the lobby of any of the low-rent tower blocks and all sorts of people pass through to the elevators: a Tamil man carrying his daughter, 3, in from the school bus, a middle-aged Chinese woman in a black abaya, a young Syrian returning home with fresh flat bread from the hole-in-the-wall Shalqar Bakery across the street.

Mr Ali’s building is the typical Tourist Club blend of families and bachelors, the name for working men on low wages supporting their families overseas.

Its watchman, Saeed Mohammed, sits and watches people come and go throughout the day. Between washing the halls and overseeing repairs, he tends a patch of sugar cane he has grown from seeds and sits on the stairs with his relative Ahmed, drinking sweet tea prepared by his son. His day is punctuated by prayers at the local mosque, his forehead marked by a dark spot from hours spent in supplication.

Mr Mohammed spent his first summer in the Emirates working as a bricklayer. "I had to change my shirt three or four times a day," he says.

On its completion, he became the building watchman,  when the neighbourhood was new. "As long as my health is good, this is the most important. It's my fate, my destiny. My fate is here. If the house here is good, why would I leave?"

But eventually, everyone leaves.

Children raised in Tourist Club flats have repatriated, or moved on to flats in newer neighbourhoods, reaping the rewards of their parents’ hard work. The elderly repatriate when they retire, unless they can find sponsorship through adult children who have remained in the country.

Mr Ali has lived in this building for 30 years but no longer knows his neighbours. His adult daughter has moved to Dubai and his sons have returned to Egypt. Now 70, he will soon follow them.

“It’s very difficult for me because I think it will be like a new city, a new me. But this is life. You return home again.”

Nobody knows how many people live in each high-rise. “There’s 36 flats and maybe, oh, six in a flat,” says Mr Ali.

Mr Mohammed shakes his head. O nce Mr Ali leaves, he says "there's maybe 14 in a flat. It's hard to know, really. They don't know how many live there. It changes by the week."

Families rent flats by the year but bachelors rent bedspaces by the week. For them, city life in a crowded flat is preferred to government-managed labour camps in off-island suburbs, where they can face isolation .

As the age of a building rises, the income of tenants drop. Space is initially rented by the flat, then the room, then the bedspace. The number of beds per room rises as the building falls into disrepair.

When the 13-storey building was evacuated last month, families were placed in hotels but bachelors took their belongings and left, scattering across the city.

Older buildings remain in demand because of their affordability and community feel. An old two-bedroom flat can rent for as little as Dh30,000 annually, a 10th of the price paid for a hotel-apartment rental on the adjacent Al Maryah Island, which is separated from Tourist Club by a bridge.

When old high-rises are knocked down, middle and low-income families move to mainland suburbs like the industrial district of Mussaffah, which is quickly becoming a residential area .

Independent businesses have been squeezed out of old neighbourhoods due to tighter regulations . The demolition of older buildings will be their death knell.

Naveed Baig runs Al Mujahid Printing Press and Stationary from the base of one of these older buildings. External air-conditioning units cover the outside walls, an old tree stump protrudes beside the front steps, and from a nondescript doorway at the back Mr Baig reveals a hidden world.

Large manually operated machines that can staple books and perforate receipt books sit in one corner. In another are order books, laminating machines and rolls of paper. And over the two cramped but efficient floors, workers man four Heidelberg printing machines, fans whirr, and a strangely sweet aroma of ink hangs in the air.

Mr Baig has been operating from this building since he arrived in the UAE from Lahore, Pakistan, 14 years ago. He’s seen the changes. “Owners renovate some buildings, others are demolished.”

High-rises have sprouted beside it and cars fly past on a new road outside that replaced the simple street that once had a grass verge down the centre.

Mr Baig makes flyers, business cards and menus for restaurants. But business has been tough in recent years.

"There are more charges and no more walk-in customers. At least not many," he says. "This building will be demolished eventually and we will go to Mussaffah. In Mussaffah, if I have business, I'll feel good."

Sooner or later, the old buildings of Tourist Club will be demolished, the people will move on and a way of life will disappear . When this happens, few original residents will be here to mourn its passing.
