“AEG is excited about the partnership with Soccer Champions Tour and Legends to bring the most successful soccer clubs in the world to fans across the U.S.,” said Tom Braun, the senior vice-president for soccer and business operations at AEG. Braun oversaw a five-game tour July that drew more than 93,000 fans to the Rose Bowl to see Real Madrid beat Juventus.

That was the largest crowd for a soccer match in the U.S. since July 2018.

Alex Waxman, co-founder and CEO of Sixth Street, said the company has plans to expand the tour to include women’s teams.

“While this year’s tour consists of men’s clubs, we look forward to expanding next summer to bring the world’s best women’s clubs to local audiences around the globe and to evolve this series into a format with real games of consequence.”

Which European soccer teams are touring the USA in summer 2022?

kyle fansler

by Kyle Fansler June 10, 2022

european soccer summer tours

With the COVID-19 pandemic subsiding, European soccer teams are touring the USA for offseason training again in bulk.

Last year, a handful of European clubs made the trip over to the United States. Notably, Everton won the Florida Cup against Colombian side Millionarios. Still, the majority of the major European clubs held off with limited capacity at stadiums still in effect.

This summer, look forward to seeing some of Europe’s biggest clubs in action stateside.

Most of the following teams play three games during their tenure in the country. Oftentimes, this is just a stop on the club’s international tour. For example, Barcelona has two confirmed games while in the U.S. this summer. However, the club’s offseason tour already started against Australia’s A-League All Stars.

While the players do get some time off before the trip to the United States, Barcelona then plays two games in the United States. Plus, there is potential for a third one.

See the stars in person

Also, not every club confirmed its summer plans quite yet. Real Madrid, for example, has a history of playing in the U.S. over the summer. However, with the club set for the UEFA Champions League Final, the season is still very much at hand. On the other hand, Liverpool, Real’s opponent in the Final, announced its offseason plans in February. The Reds, like a number of other clubs, will be in Asia. Specifically, Jurgen Klopp’s side has games set for Thailand and Singapore .

European soccer teams touring the USA

Back to the U.S., three of England’s ‘big six’ teams will appear throughout the United States. Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City each have a slate of games.

The highlight of this is the 2022 Florida Cup between Chelsea and Arsenal on July 23 . This one-off competition traditionally has a handful of teams from South America and Europe. As part of the FC Series, this is just a singular game. However, both clubs do have additional games.

On July 16, Chelsea plays Mexican side Club América at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Then, the club arrives in Charlotte to play MLS club Charlotte FC .

That game, scheduled for Wednesday, July 20, is part of a busy day for summer friendlies. Five European clubs play five clubs from North America across the United States. Eventually, Chelsea finishes up its America tour in that Arsenal game.

Like Chelsea, Arsenal plays three games during its time in the United States. Arsenal opens up its time in the U.S. against fellow Premier League foe Everton in Baltimore on July 16. Then, on that day of Europe vs. North America, Arsenal takes on Orlando City at Exploria Stadium in Orlando.

The Chelsea-Arsenal clash is the Gunners’ last game before heading back to England to continue preparations for what could be a big season for the North London club.

Everton was one of the few clubs to play international friendlies last summer. It returns to the United States starting with the aforementioned game against Arsenal. The Toffees then partake in that busy July 20 set of games when it plays against Minnesota United .

Everton has the honor of being Minnesota United’s first friendly against Premier League opposition. Everton did well in the preseason last summer, but struggled mightily in the league, barely staying up.

  • Manchester City

The defending Premier League champions have just two games over a four-day span in the United States. Like Chelsea, the Sky Blues take on Liga MX side Club América. This game is at NRG Stadium, the traditional home of the NFL’s Houston Texans.

Manchester City’s second game, however, is the best confirmed game in the United States. Plus, it is at one of sports’ most vaunted and historical venues. Lambeau Field, the home of the Green Bay Packers for the last 65 years, hosts its first soccer game on July 23. Manchester City plays Bayern Munich , which now has 10-consecutive Bundesliga titles. These two sides last met in 2018 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, with Pep Guardiola besting his old club 3-2. Bernardo Silva scored twice that day for City.

  • Bayern Munich

Among the European soccer teams touring the USA, Bayern Munich has the most success when it comes to the UEFA Champions League. The German side visited the U.S. in 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2019. The two games for the club go from Washington D.C. to Green Bay, WI.

On July 20, Bayern plays its first game against an MLS side when it battles DC United at Audi Field . The German car manufacturer has a stake in both DC United and Bayern Munich, making this a first Audi Football Summit. As seen previously, Bayern then rounds out its trip to the U.S. against Manchester City at Lambeau Field .

Another European giant, Barcelona has a knack for playing in the United States. The Catalans were part of the biggest summer friendly in U.S. history when they played in  El Clásico  in Miami in 2017.

As stated previously, Barcelona’s summer activities started before the European season even wrapped up. However the main bulk comes in the form of two games stateside. FCB has two games against MLS opposition in the form of Inter Miami and New York Red Bulls .

While unconfirmed, there are reports that a second  El Clásico  in the United States is in the works for the summer of 2022. Early reports indicate that the game will be at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, the same site as the contest between Chelsea and Club América. Real Madrid is yet to release information on its summer tour, but that likely comes out in early June.

Rumors on Real

While nothing is confirmed regarding  Los Blancos , there are indications of where the club’s summer tour may lead. Past rumors included a miniature tournament against Juventus and Barcelona, the three clubs still somewhat connected to the European Super League. It appears Real Madrid will be making another trip out to the U.S., but more information will arrive in the coming days.

Special offer for World Soccer Talk visitors

Other european clubs heading to the usa.

German second division club SC Paderborn also plays one match this June in Minnesota.

Other clubs could join, but the ones above are the only European clubs with confirmed dates in the United States.

European Soccer Clubs’ Summer Tours Heat Up U.S. Fans’ Interest

On a humid Friday night in late July, more than 26,000 soccer fans packed Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J.—not to watch MLS’s latest attraction, Argentine soccer star Lionel Messi, but to attend a preseason match between the English Premier League’s Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion FC.

This game was part of the Premier League Summer Series—six U.S. preseason games, organized by Stephen Ross’ Relevent Sports Group—and one of the 34 friendlies that European teams have played in the U.S. this summer. These mostly sold-out matches show American fan and business interest in global soccer is continuing its steady growth.

Premier League, Genius Sports Extend Data Partnership Through 2024-25

The Premier League’s tour promoted a set of friendly matches between mid-tier clubs—including Newcastle, Fulham , Aston Villa and Brighton —in nine days across five U.S. cities. The July 23 doubleheader at Philadelphia’s Lincoln Financial Field featuring Fulham-Brentford and Newcastle-Aston Villa saw over 100,000 fans in attendance, while Newcastle vs. Chelsea in Atlanta ’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium on July 26 had 70,789 people.

The tour’s revenue was close to $20 million, according to people familiar with the events.

Along with the Premier League Summer Series, Relevent launched LaLiga’s Summer Tour, featuring Atlético Madrid, Sevilla , Real Betis and Real Sociedad . The tour is part of the strategy of LaLiga North America, the joint venture between LaLiga and Relevent, to develop and grow the league, its clubs and competitions in North American markets.

“The United States and Mexico represent an important opportunity for LaLiga and its clubs in brand and business development, especially in the run-up to the FIFA World Cup in 2026,” said Boris Gartner, CEO of LaLiga North America.

Relevent has organized preseason friendlies in the U.S. with top global soccer clubs since 2013. “It started when Stephen Ross saw a Barcelona vs. Chivas match sell out in 24 hours at [what is now called] Hard Rock Stadium,” Danny Sillman, the CEO of Relevent, said in a video call.

“Soccer was a sport that he didn’t have previous exposure to, and he realized that it’s the one sport where Americans are clearly not the best,” Sillman said. “And he wanted to bring these iconic players and mythical-like clubs to an American audience.”

Relevent’s International Champions Cup (ICC) saw half a million attendees, with an average attendance of 42,000 people per match in 2013. In 2017, Sillman led the strategy to bring el Clásico , the famous rivalry between Barcelona and Real Madrid , to the U.S. for a preseason match as part of the ICC. It was the first time the two teams had played stateside, and just the second time in 100 years they had played outside of Spain . The first ever el Clásico on U.S. soil took place in Miami ’s Hard Rock Stadium in front of 66,014 fans.

“There is a huge interest or appetite from American fans for European football brands,” Sillman said. “Relevent’s strategy has always been about developing IP.”

The company is transitioning from ICC to these new properties. “We believe that our in live events should build IP in partnership with the European leagues, because they are what resonate with fans,” Sillman said.

Along with Relevent, other sports entertainment companies have brought major soccer teams to the U.S. this summer.

The private equity giant Sixth Street, event promoter Legends, and sports and live entertainment company AEG created a  joint venture  this year to host the Soccer Champions Tour. This edition of the Soccer Champions Tour was completely independent from the tour of the same name run in previous years by AEG, which also owns MLS’ LA Galaxy .

This year’s seven-match tour featured Real Madrid, Barcelona, AC Milan , Juventus , Arsenal and Manchester United . (Sixth Street has invested in both Real Madrid and Barcelona.) The most high-profile match of the tour was  El Clásico  at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. According to Sixth Street, it broke the attendance record for a Real Madrid vs. Barcelona match in the U.S. with 82,000 fans, the most ever for a club soccer match at AT&T Stadium. Wednesday night’s game between Real Madrid and Juventus, a sellout held at Camping World Stadium in Orlando , was the highest grossing soccer match in stadium history.

AEG independently organized two additional games this summer: one between Ryan Reynolds’ Wrexham AFC and the Galaxy at LA’s Dignity Health Sports Park, and a sold-out game between Manchester United and Arsenal at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Across all nine matches, the tournament sold almost 500,000 tickets.

“I think leading into 2026, the success of this tournament marks the emergence of soccer in America,” said Tom Braun, SVP of soccer and business development of AEG Sports/LA Galaxy. “And these friendlies are just one small piece of what soccer in America is about.”

The Soccer Champions Tour is expanding next year to include top women’s clubs, and the tournament might take place in the U.S., Europe or elsewhere, according to organizers. Sixth Street has a controlling stake in new NWSL franchise Bay FC.

Here It Comes: Another Hot Summer in Europe

Extreme heat and other weather challenges are in the forecast this summer, and travel advisers, tourists and local officials are getting prepared.

Europe, the world’s fastest-warming continent, is headed for another scorching summer, meteorologists warn. And travelers, once again, are heading to the hot spots.

Last year, large parts of southern Europe experienced prolonged periods of extreme heat with temperatures reaching 118 degrees and lasting up to two weeks or more. The sweltering conditions upended vacations throughout the summer season as visitors collapsed from heat exhaustion at crowded tourist sites, and wildfires led to evacuations in Greece, Italy and Spain.

“Our computer models are in good agreement that it’s going to be another unusually hot summer, especially during late July through August,” said Todd Crawford, vice president of meteorology at Atmospheric G2 , a weather and climate intelligence firm based in Manchester, N.H. The company expects the magnitude of the heat to be similar to 2022, the hottest summer ever recorded in Europe, with the most anomalous heat projected in the south, in popular countries for travelers like Greece, Croatia and Italy.

Since 1991, Europe has been warming at twice the global average, and 23 of the 30 most severe heat waves in Europe since 1950 have occurred since 2000, with five in the last three years, according to the World Meteorological Organization. The European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service said several factors contribute to the continent’s vulnerability, including the proportion of European land in the Arctic — the fastest-warming region on earth — and changes in atmospheric circulation.

Yet despite the forecast and increasing trend of excessive summer heat, demand is still high for destinations where temperatures reached 100 degrees or higher in recent summers. Overall, U.S. demand for travel to Europe has increased since last year, according to the travel site Hopper . Rome, Paris and Athens are among the most searched cities out of billions of annual searches for summer vacations on Kayak and Expedia.

“The destinations are being booked again, and what really characterizes people is how quickly they forget and push back negative experiences,” said Stefan Gössling, a professor who researches tourism and climate change at Linnaeus University in Sweden. “People who were caught in life-threatening situations like the wildfires may reconsider where they travel, but for the broader population, we are not yet seeing a big change in decision-making because of the heat.”

Green spaces and heat officers: Cities adapt

As the summer approaches, popular destinations that were hit hard last year are working on protocols to make residents and tourists safe and more comfortable. In 2021, Athens became the first European city to appoint a chief heat officer to oversee those efforts. One of the first steps was to categorize heat waves by severity, like hurricanes, as an early warning system for the potential impact on human health. It is also naming heat waves to emphasize their potential risks.

“Heat is a silent killer and projections for the coming years show that it will only get worse, so we are redesigning our city and making changes to adapt,” said Elissavet Bargianni, the chief heat officer for Athens. Beyond raising awareness, the city plans to implement additional measures, which include increasing the number of green spaces and creating cool public areas.

For visitors planning to visit Athens this summer, Ms. Bargianni advises using the Extrema Global app that calculates the coolest route for getting from point A to point B according to the current temperature and density of the trees. The city already has several air-conditioned cooling centers that are free.

During last July’s heat wave, the Acropolis was forced to close between midday and the early evening to protect visitors after some of them collapsed from the heat. The ministry of culture could make the same decision this year, Ms. Bargianni said, if the heat is severe.

Heat and tours: Travel advisers get creative

Travel advisers are also factoring heat into flexible itineraries. In cities like Rome, Barcelona, Paris and Athens, they are scheduling sightseeing in the cooler morning and evening hours, and arranging air-conditioned transportation.

“We tend to do activities and tours in the morning, then stop for lunch, and in the mid- to late afternoon you either go back to the hotel to sit by the pool or go to the beach,” said Gary Portuesi, a co-managing partner at Authentic Explorations, a New York-based travel company that specializes in Europe.

If clients insist on taking midday tours, the company will work with local partners to make the experience as comfortable as possible. “If there is a six-hour tour, for example, they will cut it down to four and take them to an air-conditioned gelateria for a break,” Mr. Portuesi said.

It is not only the heat that travel advisers have had to grapple with, but also other unpredictable weather events. Last summer, while some parts of the continent were hot and dry, others were cold and wet. “There was a period during the summer peak when it was hotter in the Dolomites than it was in Sicily,” said Jennifer Schwartz, the Italy-based partner of Authentic Explorations. “The most important aspect of our job is to set expectations about the variables and guide people instead of saying it’s too hot, don’t come.”

Heat insurance?

To help travelers book with more confidence, Sensible Weather, a Los Angeles-based start-up that provides a weather guarantee for vacations and outdoor experiences, has recently added high heat protection to its coverage. When booking through a Sensible partner, travelers will be able to add daily protection and if the temperature exceeds a threshold — usually set between 90 and 100 degrees — they can claim reimbursement. Currently, the insurance is only available in the United States, but, the company said, will gradually be rolled out in Europe and elsewhere.

“The goal of the company is to cover everything that can ruin a trip, and usually it’s rain, but temperature is number two,” said Nick Cavanaugh, the company’s founder who was developing the product while caught in a heat wave in Barcelona last year.

Customers do not need to cancel their trip in order to be reimbursed. Those on package tours are reimbursed for the average daily rate of their entire trip for each day that surpassed the heat threshold. “Our customers can still go on their vacations, but if it’s too hot for some hours of the day and unpleasant to go outside, you can hang out in the air-conditioning and we will reimburse you,” Mr. Cavanaugh said.

Heading to cooler climes

Some travelers who were caught in Europe’s heat waves last summer are seeking cooler destinations this summer in places like Norway, Slovenia, Switzerland, Sweden and Finland. Flight searches for Tromsø, Norway, for example, have increased by 85 percent over 2023, according to Kayak.

Joanna Walker, a 43-year-old recruiter from Boston, was caught in a blistering heat wave with her family in Italy last July and vowed never to return during the summer. She said she had been advised to travel during the shoulder season, but couldn’t because her children were in school.

“We couldn’t even cool off in the pool because there was no shade and the water was hot,” Ms. Walker recalled. “We wanted to see the sights in Florence and have long lunches in the piazzas, but instead we were stuck in our overpriced villas under the air-conditioning.”

This year her family has booked a tour of Norway’s fjords in July, where temperatures linger in the high 60s. “It’s going to be a different vibe to Italy for sure, lots of nature and not as much history, but at least it will be cool enough to experience something.”

Euro 2024 prediction: Favorites, odds, expert picks for who will win UEFA trophy in Germany

The 2024 European championship takes the field in Germany this summer to mark the midway point in the current World Cup cycle.

With top teams dotting the map all across the continent, there will be some highly anticipated matchups between powerful football nations who will hope to stake their claim as Europe's top side.

England are considered the favourites this year, seeking their first-ever Euro title, but you only need to go back to July 2021 when Italy won the title to know anything can — and probably will — happen at this competition.

The Azzurri were coming off a failure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, and would go on to fall short of qualification for the 2022 FIFA tournament as well two years later, proving teams only need to turn it on for one month to have a shot at the trophy.

The Sporting News runs through who could impress and who might disappoint amongst the 24-team field in this year's European championship hosted by Deutschland.

Odds to win Euro 2024 in Germany

Despite never having won a European championship, England are considered the favourites for this year's competition, as they feature a host of superstar players in the squad, including Ballon d'Or favourite Jude Bellingham, whose incredible season with Real Madrid has him positioned to compete for the sport's most prestigious individual award.

France are second-favourites, looking for their first European title in 24 years, having made the semifinals just once since that trophy. Germany are third-favourites playing on home soil, having disappointed at the past few World Cup tournaments and reaching the semifinals just twice since their most recent title in 1996.

Defending champions Italy, who have had a rollercoaster ride over the past decade, are sixth-favourites thanks to their struggles in both Euro and World Cup qualifying in recent years. One nation, Georgia, will make its debut at the finals of a European championship in this competition.

Euro 2024 group stage odds

At this year's European championship, there are 24 nations broken up into six groups of four teams each. The top two sides will qualify automatically for the knockout stage, while four third-place finishers will also find their way through via a ranking table.

Because of the ability for three teams to qualify from a given group, you will notice minus odds to qualify for as many as three teams in each group, as over half the third-place finishers will make it through the knockout stage.

Germany have a loaded squad with a litany of in-form players, and on home soil, they are in position to dominate a relatively simple group. The Euro 2024 hosts are susceptible to pacey, counter-attacking teams, but the sides in their group do not present that kind of threat, and therefore they should manage to see their way through with ease.

The other teams will battle it out for as many as two qualifying spots, and unfortunately, Scotland may serve as a punching bag in the process. Hungary are a bit of an enigma, as they can both disappoint and surprise on various occasions, but at this tournament relatively close to home, they should make it through as a third-place qualifier.

Prediction:  Germany to win group (-250), Switzerland to qualify (-200), Hungary to qualify (-165)

Spain are a bit underrated in this tournament (more on that later), and despite a difficult group that features both defending champions Italy and giant-killers Croatia, they should manage to top the group. Both those sides will also manage to advance in some capacity, as Albania looks to be in over their heads in this loaded table.

One of those top three teams should manage to see a way through as a third-place qualifier, which will make life extremely difficult on whatever group winner draws them in the Round of 16.

Prediction:  Spain to win group (-130), Croatia to qualify (-350), Italy to qualify (-700)

England have significant challenges to overcome in this competition relative to their expectations, but they should have few issues with a soft group to begin with. Denmark will also make it through, as neither Serbia nor Slovenia are a huge threat to their position.

It's certainly possible for Serbia to advance as a third-place finisher, or even in second above Denmark, but Slovenia is not a soft enough pot four team, which is often required for a group to have three sides advance — having one opponent for all three other teams to beat up on can be key towards establishing a high enough third-place table position. Other groups have even muddier waters, however, so there may be just enough places to find a way through.

Prediction:  England to win group (-250), Denmark to qualify (-300), Serbia to qualify (-190)

France will be considered by many to be a solid title contender, and the Netherlands also boast a very strong group that could end up on the podium. Both should find themselves in solid qualifying position without too much trouble.

From a third-place perspective, Group D has the same problem as mentioned above in Group C, as there is no bottom-feeder to feast upon. It's even exacerbated here compared to Group C, as the match between Austria and Poland could very easily finish level, leaving both on the outside looking in.

Prediction:  France to win group (-185), Netherlands to qualify (-450)

There's a clear top two sides in this group, as while neither Belgium nor Ukraine will challenge for the tournament title, they should both make their way to the knockout stage.

However, Belgium have been prone to upsets before, while Ukraine are built to withstand pressure, and the latter could find itself atop the standings at the end, even as both advance through to the Round of 16.

Prediction:  Ukraine to win group (+450), Belgium to qualify (-2000)

Even if they don't look impressive across 90 minutes or more, Portugal have a resolve which often sees them progress further than expected in knockout competitions. With Cristiano Ronaldo playing in his sixth European championship, they should make it through to the knockout stage even if pushed to the brink on occasion by a trio of plucky sides below them.

All three of the other contenders in this group have reason to back themselves for a spot in the Round of 16, but Georgia boast nearly 2/1 odds to qualify. The presence of Khvicha Kvaratskhelia alone gives them hope, but goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili was statistically the best shot-stopper in La Liga this season, and will keep his side in matches they otherwise have little business begin in. Back the underdogs to reach the Round of 16 at solid value.

Prediction:  Portugal to win group (-250), Czechia to qualify (-175), Georgia to qualify (+160)

Euro 2024 predictions for UEFA European championship

Prediction:  Germany (+500 to win title, +200 to reach final)

Seeking their first European championship in nearly 30 years, Germany have plenty of reason for optimism on home soil. Their biggest ace is playmaker Florian Wirtz, who carried Bayer Leverkusen to an invincible season and is in utterly blistering form. He is a candidate for the tournament's Golden Ball award, which gives the hosts a big chance to see out the trophy.

Furthermore, they have in-form players at every position. Jonathan Tah and Antonio Rudiger make a fearsome central defensive partnership, Toni Kroos is playing well heading into his football swansong, and even Kai Havertz has reversed his awful club form to prove a quality puzzle piece. There are no holes in this German side, they are playing well under Julian Nagelsmann, and on home soil they should be a major contender for the title. As third-favourites at 5/1 odds, they boast massive value.

Dark Horse:  Spain (+800 to win title, +350 to reach final)

It simply feels wrong to call Spain a "dark horse" but boasting 8/1 odds to lift the trophy, that's exactly what they are. Behind a star-studded England and France, and hosts Germany, Spain are flying quite under the radar in this competition.

Head coach Luis de la Fuente has done well to usher in the next group of young stars, even if it has at times come at a cost of load management. The absence of Gavi in midfield will be a blow, but any team that sports Rodri as its anchor can piece together the rest and come away successfully. Bayer Leverkusen full-back Alex Grimaldo has enjoyed a meteoric rise this season and will prove a threat, and Lamine Yamal will bring his exceptional Barcelona form to the international stage.

They are woefully undervalued at this stage and should be given a much more optimistic look.

Stay away from:  England (+275 to win title, +175 to reach final)

It's quite incredible that England are the betting favourites to win this competition. To put it simply, there are too many holes in this squad to be title contenders.

They are bested by other European nations at multiple positions, including most notably goalkeeper and defence. They have suffered significant injuries along the back line, which has hampered key players such as Luke Shaw, Reece James, Fikayo Tomori, Ben Chilwell, and Tyrone Mings to varying degrees.

The midfield is strong with both Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham considered world-class players, and the attacking trio of Harry Kane, Phil Foden, and Bukayo Saka will be fearsome, especially with Cole Palmer and Jarrod Bowen also in tow, but there are too many issues at the back to be thought of as worth their odds to lift the trophy.
