Outdoor adventurers flock to Gulf State Park, which sits just a mile east of the public beach . Along with opportunities for swimming, fishing and paddling at Lake Shelby, the park also boasts 28 miles of trails (15 of which make up the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail) that weave throughout. Visitors can also take advantage of the park's guided tours or stop by the nature center to learn about the local flora and fauna. Budget-minded vacationers should check out the park's rental cabins or its campgrounds, while those traveling with pets can make use of the on-site dog park. Those who don't want to rough it can book a room at one of the nearby hotels .

Biking along the trails at Gulf State Park is a routine favorite. The paved trails, some of which are part of the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail system, spread throughout the park, allowing bikers access to all of the park's amenities like the beach and the picnic area. The loop around Lake Shelby is a particularly popular ride. These wide, flat trails are perfect for beginner bikers, travelers who want a leisurely ride or those with kids. Visitors who do not have their own bike can rent one from the park.

Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge free

Taking its name from the French phrase meaning "safe harbor," Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge is home to a variety of stunning wildlife. Each year, migratory songbirds stop on the refuge's land to rest and eat before continuing their migration along the Alabama coastline. In addition to the various birds, Bon Secour also preserves endangered species like sea turtles and the Alabama beach mouse. To take in the wildlife, visitors can hike one of the refuge's trails, kayak or canoe through its waters or try their luck at fishing.

Past visitors praised the refuge's well-kept trails and its gorgeous scenery. Other enjoyed spotting the variety of wildlife; some were lucky enough to see alligators. In addition to sturdy walking shoes, travelers should bring plenty of sunscreen and bug spray.

USS Alabama USS Alabama

From 1943 to 1945, the USS Alabama fought in the Pacific theater during World War II. Now, the 680-foot ship rests in Mobile, Alabama, as the star attraction of the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park. The park also features the USS Drum – a WWII submarine – tanks, aircraft and memorials dedicated to each modern war and the American men and women who fought in them. There's even a monument to military service dogs. For an additional fee, you can also explore the recreation area, which has access to picnic tables and a fishing pier.

Visitors routinely praise the park, saying it is full of history and provides great insight into life aboard the ship. Travelers particularly enjoyed the self-guided tour of the USS Alabama, but warn the tour involves a lot of stairs and tight spaces.

Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo

When the kids tire of beach days, take them to visit some furry friends at the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo. If the zoo sounds familiar, here's why: It was the star of Animal Planet's 2006 documentary series "The Little Zoo That Could," which details the zoo's efforts to rebuild and care for its animals after hurricanes Ivan, Dennis and Katrina. The zoo is home to more than 600 animals representing nearly 200 species, including eight endangered species. In addition to animal viewing, the zoo offers daily zookeeper talks, animal shows and meet-and-greets with select critters.

Recent visitors enjoyed the zoo, praising the variety of wildlife on display and the new facilities (the zoo relocated in 2020 to its new spot 6 miles north of the beach). However, a few reviewers were disappointed with the admission prices, describing them as overpriced. Others say this a great outing if you have little ones in tow thanks to the zoo's manageable size (it's spread across 25 acres).

Waterville USA Waterville USA

For a break from the beach , head less than a mile inland to Waterville USA. The park, which spans 20 acres, offers both water and theme park rides. Visitors can float their way down the lazy river, brave the waves in the wave pool or shoot down one of several waterslides. Meanwhile, those looking to stay dry can take advantage of Waterville's amusement park, which features attractions like mini-golf and go-karts.

Travelers enjoy their time in the water park, emphasizing that it's a great option for families with kids of different ages. Other visitors lament the park's ban on spray sunscreen and some say the park is overpriced.

Captain Truelove & crew made this the most fun & magical evening intercoastal excursion ever! Dolphins (70 make their home here) were everywhere! We saw them feeding & they even suprised us by surfing in our boat's wake! I think our Captain conspired with them to entertain us. Crew members gave each of us 38 passengers special attention, especially the two youngest passengers. Photo ops included great blue herons, a baby dolphin, family photos, intercoastal marsh grasses, pines and inlets. Drinks and snacks came out early, and the adventure on Wolf Bay ended with a gorgeous sunset & new moon! Did I mention great music, singing and trivia, along with a most knowledgeable and charming crew! The offer a discount if you return, and your wrist band gets you more local dining discounts. The Explorer was truly a special trip.

When planning our trip to Orange Beach there were several cruises to choose from. We decided on this sail and we were glad we did. Crew is awesome. You get a table and chair with options to buy drinks both hard or soft including water. The sail was smooth, great music and wonderful photo ops of a beautiful sunset. Highly recommended!

The staff was extremely knowledgeable about dolphins and many other native animals in the area. They know how to locate the dolphins very quickly and we were able to watch them for quite some time. It was a great experience and I would recommend to anyone wanting to see the dolphins and nature.

We took our 4 children on this cruise. They were very informative and interacted with all of the kids. They had drinks and snacks for kids and adults. (Try the dizzy dolphin) it's well worth the money and we will be taking my mom when we go back next spring break!

Comfortable Morning Alabama Kayaking

Fabulous wildlife tour in the Ft Morgan stretch of the icw to Mobile Bay. Chris was a great guide, as full of humor as local and statewide knowledge. Tours like this are both relaxing and entertaining while vital to ecological awareness. The value for cost was superb. The pace was easy and not difficult even for first time kayakers. If you have the chance to do this tour, whether vacationing in Gulf Shores or an Alabama local, it’s well worth it. The dolphins, great blue herons, and bald eagles were magnificent in their natural habitats. Don’t miss out.

Our Guide Cassie was a wealth of knowledge. She filled the experience with facts on every bird we saw, the watershed, aquatic life, etc. We were able to spot a pair of dolphins and cruise up close to them and get some good video and pics. The ocean tandem kayaks are very stable and easy to maneuver. Adjust the seats prior to launch, they are not the most comfortable, but better than going without a seat back. They packed a cooler with iced water bottles, which is handy. Great experience.

We had a great time kayaking with Chris. We booked the kayak trip last year during our vacation in the Gulf Shores. Chris was very informative and we learned so much about the birds, dolphins and wildlife that live in the waterway and bay. A great experience and would highly recommend!

We had so much fun! The captain was amazing and kept us well entertained. He knew right where to find the dolphins and how to get them interacting with us. It was an amazing experience. This was a great cruise to see the dolphins! The Captain was very knowledgeable about the entire surroundings and about the dolphins! The crew was very friendly and helpful for the entire cruise. This lasted about 2 hours! I would definitely recommend this!

This was our second year in a row for parasailing with this company. This year my wife and 3 of our children did the parasailing. We all absolutely loved it. The guys on the boat (I apologize for not remembering names) made it fun and exciting. We really enjoyed the way they interacted with everyone on the boat. We took our two kids on the morning dolphin cruise. It was a great time. The staff was very friendly and entertaining. We saw lots of dolphins and had the dolphins surfing along side of the boat. There was plenty of room on the boat to move around and they had a nice selection a beverages. The captain was very knowledgeable and provided neat trivia about dolphin, Ono Island and the local area. We will definitely be taking the Southern Rose again when we are in Orange Beach.

I took my eighteen year old granddaughter on the Sunset Dolphin Cruise. We had such a great time! The captain was witty and informative. The other staff were friendly and helpful.
