15 BEST Pampanga Tourist Spots (Food, Heritage & Nature)

 alt=

The beautiful province of Pampanga has long been one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. This is simply because everything it offers comes close to everyone’s hearts. From its breathtaking natural wonders to its rich history and culture, exciting entertainment hubs, booming economy, grand festivals and celebrations, and most importantly, heavenly selections of food!

Historically speaking, Pampanga has proved to be one of the most important provinces in the country ever since the Spanish Colony. It was the first-ever province created by the Spaniards and therefore became the richest throughout the 333-year reign of Spain. With that being said, you can almost guarantee that every bit of Pampanga’s culture and tradition has a huge Spanish influence. Pampanga is also home to some of the Philippines’ best-known natural landmarks including Mt. Pinatubo, Mt. Arayat, and the mesmerizing Miyamit Falls!

Aside from its undoubtedly rich history, Pampanga is also one of the best-performing provinces in terms of economic success. Finally, Pampanga is also known as the “Culinary Capital of the Philippines” because several of our iconic Filipino cuisine dishes originated from the culinary genius of the Kapampangans. Heavenly dishes including Caldereta, Lengua Estofado , San Nicolas Cookies, Morcon, and most especially, the sinful Sisig all came from Pampanga. Some tourists from all over the world even visit the beautiful province just to taste the deliciously authentic dishes of Kapampangan Cuisine, I guess that just delivers the statement of how the Kapampangans mastered the art of cooking.

Pampanga is a complete package for those who want to explore a huge part of the Philippines’ history, culture, and natural beauty. There are several beautiful and exciting options to choose from and you will never run out of them when you’re in Pampanga. Pampanga Travel Guide – Local’s Tips & Tricks When Visiting Pampanga

Pampanga Philippines Travel Guide - Laquatsa

I was born and raised here in Pampanga and I’ve now spent almost 23 years in the province. Still, there’s still so much for me to see. As it’s constantly improving, growing, and becoming more urbanized and even more beautiful.

Pampanga is the culinary capital of the Philippines. It has 19 towns and 3 cities. It’s amongst the top 10 largest provinces in the country in terms of population. It was once the capital of the country! And, it was also the hometown of two of our former Presidents. The people of Pampanga have their own language and the province celebrates 17 festivals on a yearly basis.

These facts are all amazing. Especially to those who haven’t heard about them before but hear this, Pampanga is more than all these things combined. It’s a beautiful province with lovely people, rich history, numerous scenic sights, and bottomless must-see destinations that can only be appreciated in person, but most importantly, it’s one of the provinces in our country that we can truly be proud of.

Local’s Tips & Tricks When Visiting Pampanga

If you ever decide to visit the province, here’s a guide that can help you make the most out of your vacation.

Cities & Municipalities to Visit

Pampanga is home to many municipalities, each with its own unique attractions. From heritage towns to bustling metropolises, there’s something for everyone in Pampanga. Below, I’ll list some of the most popular municipalities you should visit and their famous tourist spots.

City of San Fernando

San Fernando Pampanga Guide

If you’re heading to Pampanga, you might as well take a look at its capital city, San Fernando. In the busy capital, you’ll be able to check out major establishments such as the longest SM mall in the Philippines and Robinson Starmills.

But, don’t get fooled by all these modern buildings and businesses. The City is also home to a lot of historic architecture from the Spanish era such as the colonial houses in Consunji St. , most particularly the Lazatin house which was built around the mid-1920s.

Angeles City

Angeles Pampanga Travel Guide

Although the highly urbanized city is not a part of Pampanga anymore since it was made into a politically independent component of the province, it still is, in essence, a Kapampangan city. It’s a fairly busy city with lots of businesses, malls, universities, restaurants, churches, and other establishments.

The City is famous for its daring nightlife , especially on its popular Fields Avenue where you’ll find casinos and clubs at every corner.

Are Kapampangans Nice?

What should you expect from Kapampangans? Are they really “mayabang” (boastful)?

It’s our distinct trait to warmly welcome outsiders. We’re known to be mayabang, headstrong and overly frank (which is true) but when it comes to welcoming our neighbors, you can count on our warmth and friendliness.

Here are some things that you should remember:

  • Don’t hesitate to ask for directions. If we know where you’re heading, we’ll gladly point you to the right direction.
  • Need help with a flat tire? Don’t worry about being snubbed by the side of the road. A Kapampangan will help you out if you ask. We’re pretty handy too.
  • We normally talk very loud. To some, it may sound like we’re angry or arguing with someone, but that’s just how we speak.
  • There are words in the Kapampangan language that resemble words in Tagalog but mean different things. If you think we said something offensive for no reason, it may just be a Kapampangan word that kind of sounds offensive.

Pampanga is part of the Philippines’ central plain region and is mostly composed of lowlands. It’s 9.9 meters above sea level and experiences both wet and dry seasons. Temperatures can reach up to an average of 28.5°C during its hottest month, April and can dip to an average of 26.5°C in the month of November.

With all these things in mind, there really isn’t much to worry about when visiting the Province, just remember to bring an umbrella because it’s only going to be either hot or rainy.

What to Wear

Now that you know how hot and how cold it can be in the province, you now have an idea of what to wear. Unlike Baguio, it doesn’t really get that cold in the lowlands, so  you’ll be safe wearing just a casual getup. A pair of shorts or a shirt will do. You can also get comfy with slippers especially if you’re heading to the rural parts of the province where it can get muddy and wet.

If you’re visiting Arayat and you’re up to some adventurous outdoor fun, better wear your best hiking attire. Don’t forget your trekking sandals.

Specialties/Pasalubongs

Your trip to Pampanga won’t be complete if you won’t buy any pasalubongs or take-homes for your family and friends back home.

Here are some places/stores where you will be able to find Pampanga’s specialties/delicacies:

  • Susie’s Cuisine is known for its original Kapampangan kakanin and desserts.
  • LA Bakeshop makes the best cheese bread in town.
  • Aling Lucing’s Sisig is popular for its original pork sisig recipe.
  • Pampanga’s Best is the original maker of the popular Kapampangan tocino.
  • Everybody’s Cafe has one of the best murcons in Pampanga.
  • You can also visit local markets for delicacies like buro, bringhi, and tabang talangka among many others.

Commuting in the Province

When it comes to commuting in Pampanga, you’re presented with numerous choices. You can either catch a jeepney, call a “trike,” ride a kalesa, rent a car or in some places, ride a tri-wheeler.

Here’s a short guide that can help you decide which public transport you can use:

No matter where you’re from in the Philippines, you surely have heard about tricycles, they’re the second most popular way of commuting in the country second to Jeepneys.  In the province, you’ll find them almost at every corner waiting for passengers who couldn’t catch Jeepneys during rush hour or those who prefer to commute in a more private manner away from the crowds. The minimum fare ranges from 25-30 pesos for the first 1 kilometer and an additional 10 pesos for the succeeding kilometers.

Kalesas can also be found in Pampanga, just like the ones in Intramuros. In fact, they were among the first types of public transport introduced by the Spaniards in the 1700s. Until today, there are still some parts of the country that still use horses for public and private transport.

In Pampanga, kalesas are usually found in San Fernando, the capital of the province, particularly in the Downtown area near the Metropolitan Cathedral. You can ask your kutsero to take you for a ride around the heritage district for 100-200 pesos.

Tri-Wheeler

Tri-wheelers or wheelers are a popular way to travel in Pampanga, especially in the City of San Fernando. They are basically the Kapampangan version of pedicabs, but with the sidecar attached not on the side, but at the rear part of the vehicle.

They are a popular way to get around the inner parts of the province, typically in barangays waiting by the street corner for passengers dropped by PUVs, in front of schools, public markets, and malls. There isn’t really a fixed rate when it comes to tri-wheeler commuting, but the accepted minimum fare hovers around 30 pesos and an additional 10 pesos for the succeeding kilometers.

Of course, Jeepneys. Commuting anywhere in the country won’t be complete without Jeepneys. They’re just the most convenient way to travel from point to point without having to break the bank with the minimum being 10 pesos (as of writing).

There are also air-conditioned jeepneys in the Province as part of the PUV modernization caravan which was launched in 2019. The going minimum rate for air-conditioned jeepneys today (as of writing) is 11 pesos.

If you really want to enjoy your visit to the Province and you don’t have a personal vehicle, renting one may be your best bet. Car rentals are really becoming a thing today now that commuting is becoming more and more cumbersome considering the increasing number of cars on the road. For as low as 2000, you can rent a decent sedan for a day in Pampanga.

Nabuklod: Pampanga’s paradise in the sky

Aeta children enjoy the now livable Nabuklod with a steady supply of potable water.

Right photo:An Aeta mother and her child watch as the cable car returns to its base near the view deck of Nabuklod

The scenic portion of Nabuklod, Floridablanca, Pampanga. Photos by Ric Gonzales FLORIDABLANCA , Pampanga – “It’s a paradise in the sky.” Thus said visitors as they saw for the first time an Aeta village here known as Nabuklod. It is perched in a hilly area whose temperature all year round could be compared to the cities of Baguio and Tagaytay.

The temperature was 16 degrees Celsius as measured by Roy Imperial, consultant-adviser of Gov. Lilia Pineda, when the governor’s team was in Nabuklod at about 6:15 a.m. last week.

“It’s better than Tagaytay and Baguio – because it’s still clean and fresh,” added the first-time visitors accompanied by Imperial and Pineda, including Candaba Mayor Jerry Pelayo and his son, Patrick.

Gov. Pineda has capitalized on the potentials of Nabuklod as tourism and agricultural area.

In doing so, she wants to maintain the natural beauty of Nabuklod and prioritizes the involvement and welfare of Aetas in the agri-tourism project.

The provincial government allotted some P7.9 million for the development of Nabuklod, particularly its hilly portion measuring at least 1,000 hectares.

The village is home to at least 150 Aeta families, according to Barangay Captain Roger Apang. PINEDA’S DREAM FOR AETAS

In as many years of its existence, Nabuklod has been deprived of water, particularly in the populated portion of the barangay.

An Aeta mother and her child used to spend almost eight hours of walking just to get three pales of water from the nearest source in the village.

“We are thankful to Governor Pineda for allowing us to have water for the first time. It’s really helpful,” said the mother in mixed Tagalog and Capampangan dialects.

For her part, Pineda said in the dialect: “One reason why the Aetas do not have good hygiene practices is that they have no source of abundant water in their place. Now, we can teach them to clean themselves and their surroundings as more water is now readily available.”

The governor used at least P2.3 million to pump up water from the lower portion of the village. ADVENTURE ON TOP

Pampanga Board Members Monz Laus and Fritzie David-Dizon braved and tried the first zipline (which was completed last year). They also tried the five other rides, including a cable car which was finished last month and now on a test-run.

“It’s really safe. But more importantly, it’s fun,” said Laus shortly after her ride in the zipline measuring about 480 meters.

Imperial said two twin ziplines and two single ziplines are to be constructed in Nabuklod. The cable car which can accommodate at least five people was recently inspected by Pineda.

Provincial department heads and Edna Vitug, executive assistant of the governor, tested the cable car and described the ride “as a wonderful trip in heaven.”

Provincial Administrator Andres Pangilinan Jr. said the project of the governor “is a venture.”

“It has a great chance of succeeding because it has huge potentials. The area is beautiful and scenic,” said Pangilinan.

More importantly, he added, Gov. Pineda has already achieved her goal and dream of prioritizing the welfare of the Aetas.

Asked by reporters why she gives special treatment to Aetas, Pineda said: “Ala kasing mamansin karela. Ilang minunang tau keng Pampanga  (Nobody is giving attention to them. They are the first settlers of Pampanga).

Pineda said her government will assist the Aetas in managing the area until they properly learn.

“In three years, we want the Aetas to be independent and see them managing Nabuklod well,” said Pineda.                          AGRI PRODUCTS

Businessman Patrick Pelayo of Farm Fresh said Nabuklod could be tapped to produce high-value crops, including ube and strawberries. He disclosed that a prominent ice cream maker based in Metro Manila wants Pampanga to produce ube and strawberries as the supply is becoming scare.

Mayor Pelayo said local officials and the governor of Nueva Vizcaya are willing to teach Nabuklod farmers of producing strawberries, ube and other-high value crops.

He added that Nueva Vizcaya’s area for high-value crops is similar to Nabuklod in terms of temperature and landscape.

“The area for high-value crops should be cold like Nabuklod. We will conduct soil test to determine what other crops can be planted here,” said Pineda in an interview on one of the two view decks constructed last year.

Gilda Padua, president of the Alliance of Travel and Tours Agencies of Pampanga, recently sponsored a civic action project in Nabuklod with the Rotary Club of Paranaque East (RCPE) headed by Ramil De Mesa.

The project was in coordination with the 7th Tactical Fighter “Bulldogs” Squadron (7TFS) of the Air Defense Wing (ADW) at the Basa Air Base here.

Padua said the ATTAP members will support the project of the Pampanga provincial government.

But Padua stressed that the preservation of the Aeta culture and the natural beauty of Nabuklod “are its major attraction.”

“An immersion with the Aetas that ends with a relaxing spa is a real joy and attraction to visitors both foreign and local,” said Padua, who is being considered by the governor to help train Aetas as spa workers.

Nabuklod is indeed a paradise in the sky. But it is the Aetas that will greatly benefit from the agri-tourism project as designed and envisioned by Pineda, better known as “Nanay (mother)” among her people, notably the then neglected Aetas.

pampanga tourist spots

Discover the must-see Pampanga tourist spots, including the colorful festivities and gastronomic adventure in the Culinary Capital of the Philippines.

Pampanga is historically known as the former military base of the US army. Other than that, the province is best known for everything culinary because of Kapampangan’s intricate reinvention of dishes. Having greatly influenced by Spanish culture, expertise in cooking passes down from generation to generation.

The rising city of Clark in the Freeport Zone continues to flourish with the recent completion of the new Clark International Airport. The city is also home to various amusement parks, serving as international venues, with growing commercial and industrial ventures and investments.

What makes Pampanga one of the perfect escapes from the bustling Metro Manila is its 2-hour drive accessibility. The promising ongoing construction of the North-South Commuter Railway will eventually pave the way for more efficient transportation from the capital Manila.

Have a glimpse of the popular Pampanga tourist spots and exciting attractions in the culinary capital of the Philippines.
