Many people visit the Fox Theatre, not only for its breathtaking architecture but also its haunted past. Learn more on a tour of haunted Atlanta with USGA.

The Fox Theatre is one of Atlanta’s largest event and performance venues. The theater was built in 1926, originally as the main office for the Atlanta Shriners club. You can see the Shriner influence in its design and mosque-like architecture.

Movie industry leader William Fox ended up leasing the theater and turned it into the lavish cinema it is today. Today, locals and visitors can enjoy live music and performances at the famous Fox Theatre.

But something else lurks in the balcony and plays the organ when no one is around.

Discover what ghostly spirits lurk at the Fox on a ghost tour with US Ghost Adventures.

Fox Theatre Origins

William Fox was a well-known theater mogul who bought and built cinemas across the country. He opened the Fox Theatre in 1929 after leasing the property from the Atlanta Shriners organization. The Shriners remained in a section of the property until 1949.

By 1932, the Shriners and Fox couldn’t financially support the theater, and Lucas & Jenkins (a company that owned many theaters) and Paramount Pictures purchased it. It wasn’t until the 1940s that the Fox Theatre truly flourished as a popular event venue in the city.

For decades onwards, it served as the location for several famous music artists, performers, and other events in Atlanta.

Ghostly Encounters

Catching a show in the Fox Theatre when it’s packed is a treat on its own. However, having a tour of the entire facility to try and encounter spirits is an altogether different kind of experience.

One of the most famous ghost stories involving the Fox Theatre concerns the elevator backstage.

Legend has it that a girlfriend of one of the theater’s managers passed away, and her spirit lives in the backstage elevator. There are countless reports of the elevator working on its own, usually traveling between the first and fourth floors.

Some people who tour the Fox Theatre claim to hear strange noises coming from various parts of the building. If you’re quiet enough, you may even hear the infamous footsteps that come from the audience seats while you stand on the main stage.

Moreover, many tour-goers claim to feel a sudden chilly sensation in certain parts of the theater. Whether that’s just a draft or something more spooky is up to your imagination.

Haunted Organ

The massive organ (nicknamed “The Mighty Mo”) is one of the theater’s most popular items. One of the earlier organists died and had his ashes scattered around the organ. The legend goes that you can sometimes hear him playing his beloved instrument on quiet nights.

While the sound of music can be pleasing, it can also be highly unsettling knowing there’s nobody in the organ room.

Fox Theatre Ghost Tours Review: About the Tour

Fox Theatre Ghost Tours allow brave patrons to walk the haunted halls of one of Atlanta’s most treasured landmarks. On the tour, you’ll learn about the theatre’s long history and the guests that loved it so much they never left.

Tours are only offered during October, and tickets always sell out fast.

If you’re lucky enough to score a ticket, you’ll be led through the theatre by an expert guide from the lobby to the basement to backstage. Your guide will tell you all about the history of the building and the many ghosts that still linger.

There are “spooks” (actors) at a few stops who will tell you their stories and why they still hang around the theatre. A couple times a spook may startle you when they appear, but there’s nothing too terrifying.

There’s something about being in a theatre after hours that just gives you the chills. Then add on wandering through dark and dimly lit hallways, and the Fox Theatre Ghost Tours have the perfect ambiance.

Fox Theatre Ghosts and Haunted Spots

Want a little taste of the haunts before you take the tour? Here are some of the interesting haunted spots around the theatre.

The Hospital

View this post on Instagram A post shared by The Fox Theatre (@thefoxtheatre)

Have you ever noticed The Fox has its own hospital? It’s located by the ladies’ restroom on the lower level.

This room has medical furniture that dates back to the 1920s when the theatre was built. During the time, it was manned by a registered nurse. A woman even gave birth here during a show when the hospital room was still in use.

Some say they still see the spirit of the nurse lingering in the doorway.

The Haunted Elevator

The old backstage elevator which takes you to the dressing rooms seems to have a mind of its own. It likes to take to a floor you didn’t choose, and often it will take to to the 4th floor.

The story goes that, during the 1940s, one of the theatre’s managers and his girlfriend lived on the 4th floor. One day, the girlfriend was found dead in their apartment. Ever since, the elevator has liked to go to the 4th floor on its own.

People also report feeling a presence or a touch on the shoulder while riding the elevator.

The Dressing Rooms

The dressing rooms at the Fox have walls lined with antique playbills and old ticket stubs from shows at the theatre. The draws of the vanity are also adorned with signatures from actors and headliners.

Dressing room number 42 is said to be frequented by the spirit of Anna Ragan. The Ragan family owned the property that the Fox was built on in an extravagant mansion. Anna is thought to have died in the house, and it seems she has no problem with her former home becoming a theatre.

The Fox team honors her death by bringing her flowers. She is known to move things around the dressing room. Some even report seeing her apparition and hearing her voice.

The Boiler Room

Down in the depths of the Fox is the boiler room. Now, we the theatre uses updated technology to keep its patrons cool in the summer and warm in the winter. But back in the 1930s and 1940s, the fire had to be manually stoked and the burners cleaned to keep guests warm.

Roosevelt was the man for that job. He oversaw the Fox’s boiler room until his death in 1945. And he kept working after his death.

If you disturb him while he works, he will slam doors and turn the lights off on you, leaving you alone in the dark.

The final stop of the tour is center stage. You can look out on the darkened auditorium and gaze up at the Fox’s famed night sky ceiling.

The stage is said to be haunted by a stagehand who tripped and fell off into the orchestra pit one night. There are also reports of people hearing footsteps and seeing figures in the audience when the theatre is deserted.

There is a “ghost light” set up on stage: a lone light that is lit when the theatre is unoccupied. It’s practical purpose is to prevent accidents when the theatre is dark, like what befell our stagehand spirit. Superstitions surrounding the light say that you leave it on, as well as close the theatre one day a week, to allow the ghosts that remain the opportunity to perform. Another superstition suggests that the light is there to ward away ghosts.

The Fox Theatre has long been an important part of Atlanta’s history and remains one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. And with more than 90 years of history, legend has it that the theater is home to a handful of spirits who regularly give Fox employees the heebie-jeebies.

If you’re curious to know more about the Fox’s haunted history, take part in the theater’s annual ghost tour .

CHECK OUT: Are you brave enough to take on these metro Atlanta ghost tours?

Now in its ninth year, the tour runs Oct. 17-28. With so few dates available, they sell out fast — so don’t wait to buy a ticket.

The theater was originally designed in 1928 as a home for Atlanta’s Shriners organization. It survived a planned demolition in the 1970s, and today continues to serve as a premier arts venue, hosting more than 250 shows and half a million guests each year.

The tour uses actors to tell the story of the Fox and its haunted residents, guiding guests through both familiar and forbidden spaces in the fabulous theatre. Stops along the way include the stage, the coal room and a hospital room still filled with artifacts from 1929.

“I’ve been here for 16 years and have heard these stories since I started. Theaters in general have a tendency to be a little scary when there’s not anyone here, but I think the hospital room in the Fox is just different. There’s a hospital bed, a chair, and it’s just the creepiest space ever,” said Jamie Vosmeier, vice president of sales and marketing.

You really can’t have a 90-year history without rounding up a few ghosts!

Stories about a male panhandler who walks the street outside of the theatre but disappears when someone hands him change…lights that flash on and off when no one is around and the sighting of what appears to be a young girl in old fashioned dress roaming the inside theatre have given The Fox a well-deserved reputation as a place to experience ghostly adventures.

The Fox is excited to have the Tucson Ghost Society take 10 curious (and brave) souls on a safe and educational tour of The Fox that includes a preternatural investigation using state of the art equipment exclusive to the paranormal industry.

Theatres in Moscow

Cultural life of Moscow city is various and rich! Operas, ballets, symphonic concerts... Russian composers have created some of the most beautiful classical music. Russian classical music is very popular in Moscow. It is performed in many beautiful historical venues. Do not forget to include a visit to a concert hall in your itinerary when you are planning your stay in Moscow! And do it in advance.

There are almost no restrictions on dress code in Russian theatres. Visitors may wear jeans and sports shoes, they may have a backpack with them. Only shorts are not allowed.

A typical feature of Russian theatre – visitors are bringing a lot of flowers which they present to their favorite performers after the show.

Here are some practical advices where to go and how to buy tickets.

The Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre is the oldest, the most famous and popular opera and ballet theatre in Russia. The word “Bolshoi” means “big” in Russian. You can buy a ticket online in advance, 2-3 months before the date of performance on the official website . Prices for famous ballets are high: 6-8 thousand rubles for a seat in stalls. Tickets to operas are cheaper: you can get a good seat for 4-5 thousand rubles. Tickets are cheaper for daytime performances and performances on the New Stage. The New Stage is situated in the light-green building to the left of the Bolshoi's main building. The quality of operas and ballets shown on the New Stage is excellent too. However, you should pay attention that many seats of the Bolshoi’s Old and New Stages have limited visibility . If you want to see the Bolshoi’s Old Stage but all tickets are sold out, you can order a tour of the theatre. You can book such a tour on the official website.

If you want, following Russian tradition, to give flowers to the performers at the end of the show, in the Bolshoi flowers should be presented via special staff who collects these flowers in advance.

In August the Bolshoi is closed.

The Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre

This theatre is noteworthy. On one hand, it offers brilliant classical opera and ballet performances. On the other hand, it is an experimental venue for modern artists. You can check the program and buy tickets online here http://stanmus.com/ . If you are opera lover, get a ticket to see superstar Hibla Gerzmava . The theatre has a very beautiful historic building and a stage with a good view from every seat. Tickets are twice cheaper than in the Bolshoi.

The Novaya Opera

“Novaya” means “New” in Russian. This opera house was founded in 1991 by a famous conductor Eugene Kolobov. Its repertoire has several directions: Russian and Western classics, original shows and divertissements, and operas of the 20th and 21st centuries. It is very popular with Muscovites for excellent quality of performances, a comfortable hall, a beautiful Art Nouveau building and a historic park Hermitage, which is situated right next to it. You can buy tickets online here http://www.novayaopera.ru/en .

Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Center

The Opera Center has become one of the best theatrical venues in Moscow. It was founded in 2002 by great diva Galina Vishnevskaya. Nowadays its artistic director is Olga Rostropovich, daughter of Galina Vishnevskaya and her husband Mstislav Rostropovich, great cellist and conductor. Not only best young opera singers perform here, but also world music stars do; chamber and symphonic concerts, theatrical productions and musical festivals take place here. You can see what is on the program here http://opera-centre.ru/theatre . Unfortunately “booking tickets online” is available in Russian only. If you need help, you can contact us at and we can book a ticket for you.

Tchaikovsky Concert Hall and The Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory

These are two major concert halls for symphonic music in Moscow. Both feature excellent acoustics, impressive interior, various repertoire and best performers. You can check the program here http://meloman.ru/calendar/ . You need just to switch to English. Booking tickets online is available only for owners of Russian, Ukrainian and Belorussian phone numbers. If you need help, you can contact us and we can book a ticket for you.

Moscow International Performing Arts Center (MIPAC)

This modern and elegant concert hall houses performances of national and foreign symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, solo instrumentalists, opera singers, ballet dancers, theatre companies, jazz bands, variety and traditional ensembles. Actually, it has three concert halls placed on three different levels and having separate entrances. The President of MIPAC is People’s Artist of the USSR Vladimir Spivakov, conductor of “Virtuosy Moskvy” orchestra. You can see pictures of the concert halls here http://www.mmdm.ru/en/content/halls . The program is impressive in its variety but is not translated into English. You can contact us at and we can find a performance for you.

Smart arts reviews., ghost the musical | mdm theatre, moscow.

REVIEW: A Broadway ghost story, just in time for Christmas; @StageEntertain 's GHOST the Musical has never looked or sounded better https://t.co/jbhA0d2Xdd — The Prickle (@ThePrickle) December 6, 2017

Despite an initial short-lived West End run that left critics cold, Ghost the Musical has gone on to tour extensively both within the U.K. and internationally, bringing audiences who come for the iconic 1990 film, and stay for the emotionally-charged, pop-rock score and eye-popping illusions. This Russian-language tour looks and sounds better than it ever did in the U.K., lifted by two superlative casts (in rotation).

Spoiler Alert : Sam (Pavel Lyovkin) is murdered a few minutes into Act one and becomes – you guessed it – a ghost. He’s trapped to roam the earth because of unfinished business: who murdered him, and why? Enlisting the help of fake psychic Oda Mae (Marina Ivanova), Sam persuades his devastated ex Molly (Yuliya Iva) to help solve the mystery. Corny, yes, but I challenge anyone to watch the spectacular final scene without shivers of emotion.

Yuliya Iva’s powerhouse vocal and extremely tender characterisation makes her the undeniable star of the show. It’s unfortunate that, due to Russian-language casting, Oda Mae is white in this all-white production (Whoopi Goldberg played the role in the original film), but Marina Ivanova is a hoot and a clear hit with the audience. While some songs lose a thing or two in translation (for example, Molly’s Act two anthem “Nothing Stops Another Day” becomes “Tomorrow Will Be Another Day”), Ivan Rak’s sleazy banker Karl takes on a new level of machismo bite, with a powerful Russian vocal.

The standard of the staging, performances, tech (and orchestra: listen out for the moments of overblown, virtuosic guitar) is all better than the U.K. versions, so it’s hard to understand the audience’s painfully lukewarm reaction here. Maybe it’s the all-American soundtrack and setting; maybe it deviates too much from the film. But those looking for a taste of Broadway in Moscow, and a Christmas ghost story, the MDM Theatre offers just the haunt you’ve been looking for.

Ghost the Musical is booking till March 2018.
