Tobias Forge of Ghost performing at Manchester Arena.

Ghost review – rock’n’roll pyro pantomime is hellishly good fun

AO Arena, Manchester Tobias Forge’s band of ghouls just reached No 2 in the UK charts, and their symphonic metal – complete with bat wings, confetti and flamethrowers – has universal appeal

I t’s some feat bringing corpse paint to the mainstream, but Ghost have done it: the Swedes arrive for the opening night of their first UK tour in three years having seen their new album Impera reach No 2 in the charts last month.

The band’s identities were once totally secret, and although the rest remain anonymous – referred to as Nameless Ghouls, and wearing headgear that’s part steampunk, part Tom Hardy’s Bane – Ghost are a less mysterious proposition now that the theatrical Tobias Forge is known as their frontman. Not that this has had any impact on their symphonic, pop-savvy metal. What started as a doomy occult band has morphed into a blockbusting arena act, like a spooky Def Leppard without the flowing locks.

We’re two songs in and the prescient Rats already has a packed arena in raptures. Released pre-pandemic, Forge sings: “In times of turmoil, in times like these / Beliefs contagious, spreading disease.” Remove the driving guitar chugs from Spillways and in another lifetime it could be an Abba staple, such is its outrageously catchy chorus – that plinking piano opening surely a tribute to Mamma Mia from their fellow Swedes.

“Do you like a lot of oomph?” Forge enquires, before the band launch into Mummy Dust. Its zany keytar solo isn’t fooling anyone: with hulking, Metallica-esque riffs, this is Ghost’s heaviest song. On the moody Cirice, Forge slinks across the stage wearing bat wings, before funereal stomper Square Hammer inspires the most frenzied singalong of the night.

There are confetti cannon, costume changes, flamethrowers and other forms of pyro, but the band is self-aware, preventing proceedings from ever getting too cartoonish. As one of the three guitarists relishes a solo spot on From the Pinnacle to the Pit a little much for his liking, Forge playfully reprimands them with a wagging finger; this is pantomime as much as rock’n’roll.

Ghost have often delved into history for thematic fare – 2018’s Prequelle drew on the Black Death, Impera from Victorian empires – but they’ve always seemed one step ahead during their sensational, transatlantic rise. Forge has said that he’s already decided the title of Ghost’s next album; one only hopes that he’s not forgetting to take all of this in, because his band have something magnificent to offer in the present.

CONCERT REVIEW: GHOST, MASTODON and SPIRITBOX Bring Intense, Technical, Theatrical and Eye-Opening Musical Fest to Tampa (September 6th, 2022)

ghost band tour reviews

While rock music is alive and well, witness the countless mid-capacity theaters with sold out shows and festivals that are drawing forty thousand plus people. But it seems as though the art of the arena show has gone by the wayside. If there is one larger than life band that was seemingly built for the grand stage, it’s Ghost . With five full length albums including their latest effort “Impera” out it is now the perfect time for Ghost to bring their larger than life presence out on the road and to your local arena. Along for the ride is Spiritbox , a rising powerhouse band out of Canada. If that wasn’t enough, In what has to be a bold move by Ghost, they decided to invite a fearsome band that could headline this tour. Yes, Grammy award winning band Mastodon would be filling out the bill.

Starting off the nights festivities was Spiritbox . With the release of “Eternal Blue,” the band’s first full length album, the buzz about them has been high. So it was no surprise that the Yuengling Center was filling up early. From the moment they opened up with the hit single “Circle With Me” , lead singer Courtney LaPlante ’s tremendous vocal prowess was on display.  Her unique ability to go from a guttural growl to an ethereal note with a flip of a switch left everyone in awe. With a criminally short amount of time afforded to them, they breathlessly ripped through their set that featured hit singles “Hurt You” and “Holy Roller” as well as two new songs “Rotoscope” and “Hysteria.”

While many in the audience were drawn to the show due to the headline act, for those this would be a marvelous introduction to the world of Mastodon . With a twenty year career under their collective belt there would be no shortage of material for the band to choose from, including their most recent release 2021’s “Hushed And Grim”. When the stage lights came up it revealed a stage with two levels with drummer Brann Dailor and keyboardist Joao Nogueira on the upper level and bassist Troy Sanders flanked by guitarists Bill Kelliher and Brent Hinds on the lower level.

Dailor kicked things off with a flurry of intense drum work as the band leapt into “Pain With An Anchor” and he continued on taking over the singing duties while he played. The bands prog-rock roots were on full display replete with time signature changes and complex guitar interplay. As it sets the tone for “Hushed And Grim”, it also set the tone for the night’s performance. Bassist Troy Sanders took over on vocals for “Crystal Skull” while Kelliher and Hinds powerful guitar work filled the arena with a dense wall of sound. While Mastodon pounded out song after song brilliantly, they had video screens behind them playing psychedelic images as well as lasers that added to the musical journey the band was taking everyone on.

As “Hushed and Grim” is the bands newest release, nearly half of the eleven song set came from this release. “Tear Drinker” and “More Than I Can Chew” were definite highlights from the album as they truly highlighted the bands unique mix of progressive/stoner/sludge style of music. For all the fans of Mastodon they also dug deep into their catalog and treated everyone to a couple of their classic hits “Megalodon” and “Mother Puncher” . For close to an hour and a half the band put on an amazing performance that was crisp and tight without loosing an ounce of the power that their music has. For their fan base this was a show to remember and for those being introduced to them it was a performance that would be indelibly etched into their brains.

With just enough time for the crowd to catch their collective breath, it was finally time for the satanically flavored Swedish import Ghost to close out the night. As the house lights dimmed “Miserere Mei, Deus” was pumped through the house PA giving the feeling that everyone was being sent on a trip back in time to the Spanish inquisition. As the song wound down, the curtain covering the screen dropped and a massive bang was let loose. With the stage lights coming up three of the nameless ghouls made their way to the front of the stage playing the intro to “Kaisarion” . Finally Tobias Forge made his way on stage dressed as his alter ego Papa Emeritus to the cheers of all of his disciples. Forge/Emeritus and his stage full of ghouls breathlessly played the eminently catchy song “Rats” as the arena full of fans sang along word for word.

While Ghost is Forge ’s baby, and all his ghouls are hired guns hence the steampunk meets gas mask costumes that they wear. But that doesn’t mean they are merely there to back him up. He allows them to strut their stuff and during the concert they even had an incredible guitar duel. Not only did this showcase their incredible talent, but they were also able to infuse their individual personalities into the performance as well. As the ghouls wound down their solo’s, one of the ghouls started on the intro to the hit single “Cirice” and they followed it up with “Hunters Moon” which both were wildly received by everyone there.

While everyone was enjoying the music that Ghost was performing exquisitely, they also wowed everyone with an arena level performance. With a drum kit that was at the top of a multi-tier riser, elevated side stage platforms for all the band members to go on to play to the crowd on the sides, and of course a backdrop that gave the stage a cathedral like look, the setup was indeed impressive and very much worthy of an arena. While all the ghouls had their own costumes. Forge also had his. For the first part of the show he was in his latest incarnation of Papa Emeritus. But during the later parts of the concert he also surprised everyone by changing into his previous incarnations of Papa Emeritus replete with pope like hat and robes. They saved their two most popular songs for the end of the show “Dance Macabre” and “Square Hammer” and during both of them they filled the arena with Confetti.

For several hours this evening all three bands showed that rock music is very much as strong as ever and on its way back to being an arena staple with great music and over the top theatrical production of all the bands. From the youthful energy and promise of newcomers Spiritbox to the intense powerful performance of Mastodon these two bands opened plenty of eyes and garnered new fans. With tonight’s performance, Ghost has shown everyone that they have deservedly taken the giant step up to an arena level act.

Ghost at the Pechanga Arena in San Diego, CA

ghost band tour reviews

Ghost returns to the US to kick off their late summer Imperatour North American Tour at the Pechanga Arena in San Diego.

Swedish goth/theater rock band  Ghost returned to the stage at the Pechanga Arena in San Diego to begin their North American tour dubbed Imperatour . This tour sees the Grammy Award-winning band brings the satanic ritual musical theater to their North American fans again in 2022.

Tobias Forge is the vocalist for Ghost and performs as the main characters, Papa Emeritus and Cardinal Copia. He once again brings those roles to life, much to the delight of all the dedicated fans in attendance, some in makeup and costume mimicking their onstage hero. The satanic faithful, gleefully singing along to the satanically-oriented lyrics. Forge’s onstage persona is ever evolving with new and updated characters. Part Liberace, part Siegfried and Roy, part twisted and evil clergyman, Forge is all showman. The effeminate character embodied by the showman moves across the stage with a grace and style that recalls a well-styled but twisted ballet or Broadway show. Forge has definitely taken the original goth rock style of Alice Cooper, stripped away the horror element, and put a theatrical and satirical twist of their take of the satanic/metal/goth genre.

Ghost is not just Forge but also comprises a very good hard rocking eight-member touring band, known as the Nameless Ghouls. The Ghouls, all wear virtually identical face-concealing costumes. Clad in all black, the jack-booted, jodhpur trouser-clad rockers, wore helmets, with large coke bottle goggles that looked like a cross between a video game nazi character, and a “Despicable Me” minion. Ghost brings with them on this tour a beautiful stage build made up like an old gothic church and a very well-programmed light show.

The Nameless Ghouls and Forge’s demonic anti-pope character, Papa Emeritus, and the dead (brought back to life with spark shooting AED paddles) sax-playing Papa Nihil, all made for quite an entertaining stage spectacle. Forge made several costume changes from the Cardinal Copia character to the Papa Emeritus back to a very Liberace-like Copia in a blue sequin dinner jacket. During Forge’s costume changes the band rocked the crowd with some great instrumental interludes. After each change Forge’s character sashayed and strut across the stage gracefully while the Ghouls stomped and rocked the crowd with arena rock anthems.

This band loves the spotlight and the aforementioned light show was a perfect compliment to theatrics. So many bands of this genre love to hide in the dark. This is not the case when you go to a Ghost show. This band loves the spotlight and was made for it. The Ghouls were well rehearsed and the show went off with the timing of a well-directed and rehearsed Broadway show. From the Kabuki curtain fall to the curtain call, with Forge tossing roses into the adoring crowd, this had all the making of well-played theater.

Whether you are a fan of the music, a believer in the lyrical content, or a fan of the theatrics, it is, above all, theater and is very entertaining. The northern Europeans have a rich tradition in the doom/goth/death metal genre, and Ghost is one of the bands that sits atop that group. Ghost’s creativity, character building, and live show are what sets them apart from most in this genre. This tour puts all their talents on display. Forge is the consummate showman, and the Nameless Ghouls band is excellent. So whether you are a satanic “believer,” you believe it’s just theater, or you are looking for a good entertaining theatrical rock show, check out Ghost as they swing through the US until late September.

Ghost AFAS Live 2023

CONCERT REVIEW: Ghost Bring Their Gospel To Amsterdam In Majestic Show

ghost band tour reviews

Ghost were in the Netherlands! It’s only been a year since they last visited but they made sure to make it a great performance. They invited Halestorm to open for them during this show. Halestorm opens for a few more shows during this Ghost tour.

Halestorm recently won the award for ‘Best international Artist’ at the Heavy Music Awards(HME’s) so it was sure to be a good performance by them. The band has some exciting stuff coming up, they have tours with some other massive bands later this year like Black Veil Brides .

The doors opened around 7 PM so we had to wait for around an hour for Halestorm to start performing at 8PM. The start of their performance was already impressive. LZZY Hale , the lead singer, started the performance off with some insane vocals. She kept this up throughout the entire set and she was met with intense cheering from the crowd.

Their set consisted of 14 songs that they played over the course of an hour. Most songs were from their most recent album Back From The Dead but they had a nice mix of other projects throughout their set. They even covered Crazy On You by Heart .

The drummer, Arejay Hale , got the spotlight too around the middle of their set. He had an impressive drum solo while the other band members got to take a little break. He even brought out massive drumsticks that were bigger than his arms. It seemed impossible that he would play even fine with them but he actually sounded amazing.

Halestorm puts on a great show and they have a great stage presence. Check out some pictures we took below!

Halestorm Afas Live 2023

It was Ghost’s turn next. We had a half hour break in between sets where a massive cloth was put up at the front of the stage. This was so we couldn’t see what was going on on stage.

The stage was finally revealed when Ghost their set started. The cloth came down and we saw a massive steampunk-like stage with stained glass in the background. Church themed but it depicted more Ghost like themes of course.

The drum kit was pretty high up on its own stage surrounded by stairs that led up to them. It was basically the centrepiece of the entire stage. Tobias Forge, the lead singer of Ghost. Or Papa Emeritus IV as he is known in the fanbase often went behind the drums whenever he had a costume change. And there were in fact a lot of costume changes. Some were small but some were also quite big. Even getting on stage dressed as a priest with a lot of jewellery and shiny bits on the outfit.

As for their performance. Tobias was absolutely amazing. He had a lot of grace whenever he walked around. Kind of prestigious if that makes sense. He also often interacted with the other band members who all wore the same black outfits with black steampunk-like glasses and helmets. The other band members often interacted with each other too, everyone on stage was really playful with each other and it seemed like you were watching a comedic play at times.

Overall, please go to a Ghost concert If you like them even a little bit. The show was definitely one of the better shows this year. They do so many fun things on stage and you’ll be constantly entertained. Halestorm also did a great job at putting on a show so do consider attending one of their concerts if you ever get the chance to. Check out the pictures we took during the set of Ghost below!

Concert review: ghost @ giant center 2/8/22 — hershey, pa.

Ghost, Sweden’s hardest-rocking band, brought their unique sound and style to the Giant Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania earlier this week. I was lucky enough to catch the band while touring across North America with co-headliners Volbeat. I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect walking into the photo pit for Ghost’s performance, and I must admit I was somewhat nervous, but my expectations were far exceeded.

Anyway, this is a must-see musical event for all fans of hard rock and heavy metal. Tickets for remaining tour dates are available HERE . Also be sure to check the Official Ghost Website for music, videos, news, and all upcoming tour dates. Continue reading below for my full concert review. Ghost bum-rushed the stage at the Giant Center following a massive curtain drop and an extremely loud cannon blast and flash of bright lights. The band of musical ghouls wasted no time giving the arena full of diehard fans what they came for. The energy and frenzied excitement was highly contagious. I was equally hypnotized by Ghost’s performance as I was by the crowd’s reaction.

Ghost started off their set with the songs “Kaisarion,” “Rats,” “From the Pinnacle to the Pit,” and “Mary on a Cross.” The next couple songs after that are a blur due to being escorted between the photo pit and the press area. Upon my return to the crowd, I stood in my spot mesmerized by the remainder of Ghost’s performance.

4

The stage looks like an old satanic temple of sorts. The setting actually reminded me of an abandoned catholic church that had been redesigned for the dark lord. The band members themselves look like something out of a nightmare. You can’t help by stare at them. Watch the video for the latest single, “ Call Me Little Sunshine ” on YouTube.

Other musical highlights were performances of “Cirice,” Hunter’s Moon,” “Year Zero,” and “Mummy Dust.” There were plenty of other great songs in the setlist accompanied by jaw-dropping metal theatrics. I would urge all readers to catch this band on tour if possible. This show is awesome show; even for those who may not generally like satanic rock music.

10

For those who are unaware, Ghost are a rock band from Linköping, Sweden formed in 2006. The band is led by Tobias Forge under the moniker Papa Emeritus IV (aka Papa Emeritus I, II and III and Cardinal Copia), accompanied by a full band, A Group of Nameless Ghouls, who all wear costumes and masks. In this case they were all wearing individually tailored gas masks. Stunning look.

They released their debut album, Opus Eponymous , in 2010 and have since expanded their discography to include a total of four full length records including, most recently, 2018’s Prequelle . Ghost are currently set to release their fifth studio album, Impera , on 3/11/2022. The band will also tour the UK on the European leg of their “Imperatour” in April 2022, following the end of their co-headline tour across North America with Volbeat.

9

As I said I wasn’t sure what to expect walking into this show, but my expectations were definitely far exceeded. Long story short, I was pleasantly surprised and quickly put at ease by Ghost’s progressive music, psychedelic stage show, and blatantly satanic overtones. Yes, those are things that put me at ease. Also…their fans kick ass!

Ghost Announces Re-Imperatour U.S.A. 2023

Facebook icon

Citi and Artist Presales Begin Tuesday, February 14 th

Tickets on sale to general public friday, february 17th at 10am local on  ticketmaster.com, for approved artist images and hi-res tour art, please download  here ..

Ghost has revealed details of its upcoming RE-IMPERATOUR U.S.A. 2023 summer tour with special guest Amon Amarth. Produced by Live Nation and FPC Live, the 27-date tour kicks off on Wednesday, August 2nd in Concord, CA at Concord Pavilion, with stops in Salt Lake City, Chicago, Cincinnati, Austin and more before wrapping up with the band’s Monday, September 11th return to the Kia Forum in Los Angeles.

Ghost continues to elevate and reaffirm its status as one of the world’s most esteemed and celebrated creative forces. Accumulating well over a billion streams, the GRAMMY-winning Swedish theatrical rock band continues to bring the  “euphoric spectacle”  (ROLLING STONE) of its live shows to ever-growing and increasingly impassioned crowds, headlining arena tours including sold out shows from The Forum in Los Angeles and Barclays Center in New York to London’s O2 Arena and Stockholm’s Avicii Arena. In March 2022, THE LOS ANGELES TIMES reported in a Calendar cover story that Ghost had  “conquered metal and the charts”  when its fifth album  IMPERA  debuted at #1 in a sweep of the U.S. album charts, entering the BILLBOARD 200 at #2 and bowing at #1 in the band’s native Sweden as well as Germany and Finland, while cracking the top 5 in the UK (#2), Netherlands (#2), Belgium (#2), Canada (#3), Australia (#3), France (#5), Ireland (#5), and more. Produced by Klas Åhlund and mixed by Andy Wallace — and featuring “Spillways”—hailed as a  “sweetly constructed rock tune”  by THE NEW YORK TIMES, the GRAMMY-nominated “Call Me Little Sunshine,” and Active Rock #1 radio single “Hunter’s Moon” —  IMPERA  finds Ghost transported centuries forward from the Black Plague era of its previous album, 2018 Best Rock Album GRAMMY nominee  Prequelle —or as ROLLING STONE put it,  “Ghost predicted the pandemic, Now the metal band is foretelling the fall of empires.” The result is the most ambitious and lyrically incisive entry in the Ghost canon: Over the course of  IMPERA’ s 12-song cycle, empires rise and fall, would-be messiahs ply their hype (financial and spiritual alike), prophecies are foretold as the skies fill with celestial bodies divine and man-made… All in all, the most current and topical Ghost subject matter to date is set against a hypnotic and darkly colorful melodic backdrop making  IMPERA  a listen like no other — yet unmistakably, quintessentially Ghost.

TICKETS:  Tickets will be available starting with a Citi cardmember presale (details below) and Artist presale on Tuesday, February 14th. Additional presales will be available throughout the week before the general on sale starting Friday, February 17th at 10am local time on  Ticketmaster.com .

CITI PRESALE:  Citi is the official card of Ghost’s RE-IMPERATOUR U.S.A. 2023. Citi cardmembers will have access to presale tickets beginning Tuesday, February 14th at 11am ET until Thursday, February 16th at 10pm local time through the Citi Entertainment program. Ghost Will Haunt U.S. Amphitheaters on a Summer Tour

Papa Emeritus IV is coming to an amphitheater near you. Ghost , the Swedish hard-rock band led by the man of a thousand faces, Tobias Forge, has announced a U.S. summer tour .

Titled the Re-Imperatour U.S.A. 2023, the trek begins August 2nd in Concord, California, and plays 27 dates, wrapping up September 11th in Los Angeles. Along the way, the tour hits cities like Chicago, Milwaukee, Tampa, Austin, and Phoenix. Fellow Swedish metalheads Amon Amarth open all dates except the L.A. closer.

Ghost released their latest album, Impera , last year, a record that rails against bloated nations, empty leaders, and the glorification of stupidity. “We now have mechanisms within our own Western empire who are actively trying to, and to some degree have, created this time machine where we’re regressing,” Forge told Rolling Stone . “We’re flattening the earth. We’re submitting to stupidity, which is fucking unbelievable.”

Rolling stones kick-start 'hackney diamonds' tour with thrilling houston concert, supreme court puppet master’s consulting firm clients exposed in leak, kristi noem doubles down on story about killing her dog from memoir: ‘i decided what i did’.

Earlier this month, Ghost staged a pop-up exhibit at the Whisky a Go Go on the Sunset Strip in L.A. that featured memorabilia, from stage costumes to a “corpse,” from their supposed Sixties incarnation. They also released a new version of the Impera track “Spillways” featuring Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott.

Utah Concert Review

Relive the Utah Concert Experience!

Ghost•Amon Amarth•August 7, 2023•USANA Amphitheatre

Reviewed and Photographed by Max Taylor

[MESSAGE FOR THE CLERGY]

In case you missed it, the legendary Swedish rock band, Ghost, made an appearance at the USANA Amphitheatre on August 7th, 2023 while on their RE-IMPERATOUR. It certainly was a night that all in attendance won’t soon forget. Utah is their fourth stop thus far on the tour. So if you still want to participate in their life-changing, theatric, pyro, and fog-filled ritual, visit their website for more details at ghost-official.com.

Ghost released their debut album in 2010 and since then have continued to utilize their love of theatrics, horror, mystery, and Scandinavian metal roots to create an experience unlike anything you’ve witnessed before. You’ll find the lead singer Tobias Forge, who goes by “Papa Emeritus”, dressed in a variety of outfits throughout the night. All very luxurious. Perhaps one of his most iconic outfits consisted of black Papal regalia adorned with decorative skull-like designs and other symbols and his face covered in a prosthetic mask and makeup resembling that of a skeleton. You will find all of the other band members, known as “Nameless Ghouls”, wearing slight variations of the same face concealing costumes, with one of the most memorable features being their masks that have these big black goggle-like eyes. Eyes that will pierce your soul.

As I arrived at the amphitheater, I saw masses of people waiting in line, preparing for the ritual, filled with anticipation, counting the minutes until the doors were open. More people in Ghost t-shirts and nun outfits than I’d ever seen before ever filed into the venue once the clock struck 5 o’clock. The fun was about to begin.

I had the opportunity to talk with some fans in the crowd and asked them some questions while people were waiting for the show to start. I asked this group dressed as nuns about their experience waiting in line and one of them named Raha said, “I met many incredible fans who I was able to have some great conversations with. There were some fans passing out stickers and bracelets they had made for other people.” I then asked Raha how she found Ghost originally.

“In 2016, I walked into Hot Topic one day and heard Cirice playing in the store. I loved it so much, I immediately stopped and looked up the lyrics so that I could listen to the song when I got home. That night, I played Cirice and fell in love. From there, I discovered He Is and so much more. I instantly fell in love with Ghost and was able to see them in concert for the first time later that year. I have met a lot of my friends through Ghost. The connection we have because of Ghost is different than anything else. Whenever I’m feeling down, I know anything Ghost-related can cheer me up immediately.”

She went on to tell me about how the lead singer had talked to her at her first Ghost concert in 2016 and then when she had met Cardinal Copia(a previous stage name for the singer) in 2019 and gotten a cute photo with him while holding the Ghost Cardinal Copia plushie. I was blown away by the sense of community that this group of ghouls has. It is most certainly something rare. If you were part of a special VIP group, you could also experience what is called the Spillways Lounge which allows you access to a special Ghost museum experience filled with all sorts of things that would blow your mind. You’ll just have to see it for yourself.

Amon Amarth

It is not often that an audience has the privilege of witnessing an opening band with as much success, energy, theatrics, and stage production as this audience would experience. Amon Amarth, also hailing from Sweden, is a Swedish melodic death metal band – often referred to as viking metal. As people entered the amphitheater and made their way toward the stage, they would see two massive statues of swordsmen on stage, towering above everyone. The drumset was placed atop a giant viking helmet riser. I remember back in highschool, seeing this kid Jason wearing Amon Amarth merch all the time and man, he knew what was up.

Opening with the song “Raven’s Flight”, this band had all of Salt Lake shaking from their viking metal screams, guitar solos and long hair and beards, to their epic warrior battles on stage. I saw a cute couple in the audience, the man dressed up in full Nordic Viking cosplay and the woman in full Goth Nun mode. It felt like a perfect union of Amon Amarth and Ghost.

Later in their set, Amon Amarth had the audience including the people in the pit sit down and row their oars for the song “Put Your Back Into the Oar” and it was so fun to watch. The lead singer had a horn strapped to his belt that he drank from and raised it on behalf of the Salt Lake crowd. After a lot of epic song performances and stage theatrics which I won’t spoil too much of, and finishing their set off with, “Twilight Of The Thunder God”, the crowd was even more fired up and ready for Ghost.

And then it was time. “Imperium” was blasting as a giant curtain that had been hiding the stage dropped and the band entered playing “Kaisarion”. The crowd was roaring. I imagine many felt like they were in a surreal, vivid dream, witnessing the Ghouls and Papa Emeritus IV in the flesh.

The stage’s backdrop felt like you had been transported into a stunning gothic cathedral with towering stained glass windows and the band’s symbol inlaid into the cathedral stone. All the Ghouls were entrancing.Their piercing black stare pulled you in to where it was hard to look away, and as soon as they made eye contact with you, it was over. I saw the Ghouls teasing fans all night and it was so entertaining. Each Ghoul has their own personality that really comes out through the way they perform and interact with each other. And Papa’s sense of humor, the way he interacted with the Ghouls and the crowd filled you with joy and excitement.

Ghost is known for having very dark, powerful imagery, so I was curious to see how the outdoor amphitheater impacted the stage visuals and overall energy. Needless to say, it was stunning. The sun slowly set during the performance until it disappeared. The clouds were a lovely backdrop for Papa if you were on the sides of the stage which made for a unique and beautiful view. The use of fog and pyro added such a magical dimension to an already stunning scene.

There is a lot of history and lore behind the theatrics of Ghost’s ritual, so I suggest doing your research in an effort to better understand it. I certainly have a lot to learn. They played the song, “He Is”, which the nun Raha told me they haven’t played in a long time, so the crowd was so excited when that song began. But a part of the night I won’t forget happened next: when they wheeled out Nihil(a former version of Papa) who was in a coffin. They attempted to “resuscitate” him, the first time with no success. On the second attempt, sparks flew out of the coffin and he came back to life, only for enough time for him to be handed a saxophone and play one of the most legendary saxophone solos of all time during “Miasma”.

Throughout the night, everyone sang, danced, screamed, full of joy and excitement. There is so much to tell, and the amount of outfit changes was very impressive for Papa, but I will just say that you absolutely need to add Ghost to your list of artists to see if you haven’t already. Because it will change your life.

The first song of the encore was the iconic, “Kiss The Go-Goat”, and one of the things Papa said leading into the song was that it was time to give Salt Lake City a goodnight kiss. They then played two Ghost classics to finish off the night’s ritual: “Dance Macabre” and “Square Hammer”.

The night was electric. An 18-song setlist, a crowd full of Ghost lovers, metal lovers, friends, family, vikings, nuns, and the like, and surely a ritual no one would forget. The Ghouls and Papa all came close to the edge of the stage, blowing kisses, waving, saying thank you, throwing loads of guitar pics into the crowd, handing out setlists to those devoted fans, all while the song “Sorrow In the Wind” by Emmylou Harris is playing the background. It was a beautiful moment and fitting way to say “Farewell, until next time, my children of Utah”, as I imagine A Nameless Ghoul would say.

June 7, 2018

Call it the Daft Punk Principle: No matter how far they go to keep their true identities under wraps, a band of pseudonymous alter egos will eventually get unmasked—by the press, by their fans, or even by their own volition. So it has gone with Ghost . The Swedish rockers’ Catholic-inspired cosplay shtick finally unraveled in the courts last year, amid a royalties dispute between the group’s zombie-pope figurehead, Papa Emeritus (né Tobias Forge), and his band of chrome-masked sidemen, known as “Nameless Ghouls.” The biggest bombshell fell out of court, when Forge revealed to Radio Metal that he and the Ghouls had never been a group in the traditional sense. He went on to compare Ghost to pioneering black-metal act Bathory, who performed as a band but were essentially a solo outlet for multi-instrumentalist Tomas Börje “Quorthon” Forsberg.

His identity as Ghost’s architect revealed, Forge stood at the same crossroads where Kiss once found themselves. Would he stick to the outlandish personas and sepulchral faux communions for which he was known? Or would he prioritize songwriting over theatrics, ditching his papal roleplaying for a more straightforward sacrament? On Ghost’s explosive fourth album, Prequelle , the Swede straddles both paths, spiking the band’s old ornate style with youthful vigor.

Rather than reprising his role as Papa Emeritus, Forge has stepped into the Sunday shoes of one Cardinal Copia, a sprightly, pale-faced clergyman who rolls his R’s like Spanish royalty and carries a boombox wherever he goes. His gleeful, “Thriller”-esque choreography in the music video for “Rats,” Prequelle ’s fist-pumping first single, epitomizes the record and the paradigm shift it heralds: As Forge pirouettes his way through the burning, rodent-infested streets like a vampiric Gene Kelly, Ghost’s old solemnity fades away, revealing an easily accessible dark comedy that proves immensely fun despite its flaws.

A concept album loosely centered around the Black Plague, Prequelle bridges the classic rock of Ghost’s most recent full-length—2015’s Grammy-winning Meliora —and the disco flirtations of 2016’s Popestar , an EP of covers that reinterpreted non-metal songs by Eurythmics , Echo and the Bunnymen , and more. But the second style predominates, with producer Tom Dalgety shoving proggy keyboard lines to the fore on songs like the ELO -tinged instrumental “Miasma” and “Pro Memoria,” a soaring reflection on mortality undercut by some of Ghost’s laziest lyrics to date (“Don’t you forget about dying/Don’t you forget about your friend death/Don’t you forget that you will die”). With its ham-fisted wordplay (“I wanna be/Wanna bewitch you in the moonlight,” goes the chorus) and four-on-the-floor rhythms, the album’s ABBA -worshiping centerpiece “Dance Macabre” is even goofy by Ghost’s standards—but it’s damn hard not to nod along with it.

Prequelle is not entirely devoid of raw power. “Rats” and “Witch Image” get their strength from smoldering licks and stacked harmonies plucked from the Ozzy Osbourne playbook, providing metalheads with a welcome break from all the mid-tempo durdling. Given the unremarkable tracks that follow it—particularly “Helvetesfönster,” an ostentatious, baroque instrumental reminiscent of Medieval Times muzak—the latter might as well be the record’s closer.

The real keeper, though, is “Faith,” a glam-rock stomper engineered for maximum impact, from the interwoven vocal arrangement (Forge’s demonic growls on the penultimate chorus deserve a shout-out of their own) down to the sidewinding solo. The unmasked Ghost’s revised approaches to dramaturgy and group dynamics don’t always sync on Prequelle , but when they do, the performance is nothing short of showstopping.

GHOST Shares First Teaser For Upcoming Movie

GHOST has shared the first teaser for the band's film project.

According to the 30-second spot, which can be seen below, the movie will be "coming soon to cinemas worldwide".

Last October, GHOST leader Tobias Forge confirmed that footage from the band's September 2023 two shows at the Forum in Inglewood, California will be used as part of the film.

"When I first started putting it together, I was, like, 'Oh my god, I'm going to faint because there's so much to think about,'" Forge told Metal Hammer magazine. "Then it was, like, 'No, no, just don't think about it at all.'"

Both GHOST shows at the Forum were device-free experiences. Use of phones and smart watches was not permitted in the performance space. Upon arrival at the venue, devices were secured in individual Yondr pouches that were opened at the end of the event.

"I have never seen a crowd interact the way that they did since I was in a club band," Forge said. "They were the best shows I've ever done with GHOST , just because I didn't have to see those fucking mobile phones."

Tobias went on to say that GHOST was "essentially shooting a film. And we used two nights of crowds as extras," he explained. "It's going to be a film with a concert element. So a lot of what you experienced [at the two L.A. shows] is going to be part of this project."

Tobias was also asked if the GHOST film will be similar to METALLICA 's "Through The Never" , which starred members of the iconic rock band and Dane DeHaan ( "Chronicle" , "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" ). DeHaan played a young band crew member who is sent out on an urgent mission while the band is playing a rousing live set in front of a sold-out crowd and unexpectedly finds his world turned completely upside down. Forge replied: "In the sense that it's a concert with something else combined."

At the Forum shows, GHOST performed the song "Twenties" live for the very first time live. They also played their cover of Roky Erikson 's "If You Have Ghosts" , which was originally reimagined by GHOST for their 2013 EP "If You Have Ghost" . The band's version of the track at the Forum featured two cellists with a piano playing, and it was performed on a separate stage from the rest of the set.

Back in 2019, Forge told Revolver that there was a GHOST feature film in the works. He added, however, that this wouldn't be your typical "rockumentary" or even a concert film, but something else entirely.

"Most films about bands are biographical, and I see no reason to tell our story yet," Forge said. "It's a little bit like premature ejaculation. You have to have a career first and then you can tell the real story, so that was never an option. And when you yank away that, what do you have? Well, that would be a fictional story."

When Forge spoke to Revolver about the GHOST film four years ago, he explained that it would be a while before the project came to fruition.

"The cog wheels are turning on that one," he said. "We're just trying to figure out a lot of the practicalities. Making a film is a big endeavor. Another problem that I have had over the course of my career is that I don't have a shit-ton of time. I've learned over the years that it's really important not to do everything at once."

Ghost’s Impera album is the 80s arena rock banger to end 80s arena rock bangers

Album review: ghost’s impera proves the devil doesn’t have the best tunes – tobias forge does.

Ghost Impera album

You can trust Louder Our experienced team has worked for some of the biggest brands in music. From testing headphones to reviewing albums, our experts aim to create reviews you can trust. Find out more about how we review.

It’s been a while since metal has felt big . Not Andrew-Lloyd-Webber’s-wet-dreams-symphonic-metal big, but ravenously ambitious, let’s-take-pop-on-at-its-own-game big. You have to go back to the late 80s and hair metal ’s chart-gobbling heyday for a time when bands really, truly wanted it.

Sly old devil that he is, Tobias Forge has known it all along. A diabolic masterplan has slowly unfolded over his band’s four albums to date, with Ghost revealing the unabashed arena rockers beneath their (oc)cult metal raiment on 2018’s Prequelle being the biggest tell so far, not least Dance Macabre , which found our (anti-)hero hooking up with Avicii and Madonna’s old songwriters to deliver the 80s hard rock dancefloor banger to end all 80s hard rock dancefloor bangers.

With Impera , Ghost have gone several steps further, serving up the greatest arena rock album since the invention of the permed mullet/slashed denim jacket combo. The glorious, arms-in-the-air approach of its predecessor is ramped up a hundredfold here. Every chorus is bigger, every backing vocal is stacked to the heavens, every booming drumbeat makes Def Leppard ’s Pour Some Sugar On Me sound like a pensioner absent- mindedly tapping on a pile of wet bog paper with an out- of-date sausage roll.

Opening track proper Kaisarion lays out the rules of engagement, kicking in with an honest-to-god 1987-vintage scream that’s instantly followed by the kind of staggeringly brilliant chorus that rock bands forgot how to write years ago. Billowing goth-metal anthem Hunter’s Moon piles on the pantomime drama with cascading piano and monastic chants, though it’s hard to tell whether the chilly mist that surrounds it is dry ice or Aquanet hairspray. Closing track, the Jack The Ripper-inspired Respite On The Spitalfields , even has the brass knackers to nick its sawing string riff from Whitesnake ’s Still Of The Night and at least one vocal line from Europe ’s The Final Countdown .

Tobias’s desire to turn Ghost into a rubber-stamped chart-straddling colossus is reflected in his choice of co-producer. Klas Åhlund has worked with Katy Perry and Robyn, and he helps ratchet the tuneage up a dozen notches. Spillways is a free-poured shot of 110%-proof melody that cribs its jangling piano riff directly from Abba, while the whispered vocals and knowing finger-clicks of Darkness At The Heart Of My Love is a lesson in how to deliver a solid-gold power ballad with devilry in its eyes.

Yet while Impera is pop-savvy, it’s never frothy. Watcher In The Sky is fuelled by a brutally simple yet hugely effective riff, while the scabrous Twenties matches its dark grind with a high-kicking flamboyance, rhyming ‘moolah’ with ‘hoo-hahs’ for good measure. The latter is Tobias’s gimlet-eyed social commentary on modern life – part of a broader theme loosely centred around his disgust at modern society (another song, Griftwood , belatedly dunks on former US vice president Mike Pence – an unlikely inspiration for any song in 2022, metal or otherwise).

All that conceptualising is fine and dandy, but Impera wins on bolshiness, bravado and skyscraping songs alone. Ghost have turned in a modern metal classic with an arena rock heart. It turns out the devil doesn’t have all the best tunes. Tobias Forge does.
