Grand Canyon Travel Guide from Page

Traveling from page, az to the grand canyon.

Page, Arizona lies along a small strip of Lake Powell's 1900 miles of beautiful shoreline. Built during the construction of the Glen Canyon Dam, Page is the tourist hub for Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and Lake Powell . Page and all of its activities are also a short 2.5-hour drive for visitors driving to the Grand Canyon. Outside of town, Lake Powell and the surrounding Canyon Country offer a wonderland of activities for the outdoor enthusiast.  Along with the large motorboats and houseboats, Lake Powell has great fishing, scuba diving, and some of the best Kayaking in the world.  Glen Canyon, Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, the Navajo Reservation and other nearby parks have some of the most unique and picturesque canyons in the world.  Whether you want a mellow hike through Antelope Canyon, or a canyoneering adventure, this magical country is a great place to visit on the way to Grand Canyon National Park.

A small town of about 8,000 residents, Page has most creature comforts one would need, including a few grocery stores, restaurants, and a good variety of hotels. Aramark runs all of the boating and hotels concessions services on Lake Powell and Glen Canyon, so they are the primary lodging and houseboat rental source.  Although tourism centered around Lake Powell and the Grand Canyon is the main industry, the Glen Canyon Dam and a local power plant produce huge amounts of power for the Southwest Region. Aside from the surrounding public lands and Lake Powell, Page is also bordered by the Navajo Nation who makes up much of its population and has a large influence on the community and some great tourist attractions close to Grand Canyon National Park. Read the guide below to learn more about travel from Page to the Grand Canyon, or check out our Page, AZ map to see all the nearby destinations and attractions.

Papillon Canyon Tours at Page, Arizona

Located near the northern border of Arizona and Utah, our terminal in Page, Arizona serves as the launch point for our tours of Horseshoe Bend, Antelope Canyon, Rainbow Bridge, and Tower Butte. While the city itself is not well recognized in the travel community, the stunning landmarks nearby are world famous.

Antelope Canyon is one of the most well known landmarks in the area and draws visitors worldwide. Almost completely invisible from the outside, this slot canyon is known for its towering sandstone walls and sandy floors. Shafts of light find their way into the canyon through narrow openings in the top, casting narrow beams that move across the canyon walls with the position of the sun. These unique beams are sought after by photographers and sightseers alike, and each time of day offers a new experience.

Horseshoe Bend is equally as interesting. Known for the seemingly perfect curve carved by the Colorado River, this natural landmark offers visitors the chance to gaze off of canyon walls into emerald water below. This area draws large crowds of photographers and sightseers, making aerial tours of the area ideal for a more private experience.

Rainbow Bridge is a massive, stone bridge that was naturally formed by an ancient river. Our sightseeing tours offer passengers a birds-eye view of the gravity-defying stone arch.

Tower Butte is a 5,000-foot natural, stone pillar that seems to rise from nowhere. It’s twice the height of any existing skyscraper, and our helicopter tours land right on the top, offering guests a 360-degree view of the surrounding area.

Our terminal in Page, Arizona is a great place to begin your exploration into the American Southwest and experience the natural beauty this area has to offer.

How far is Page from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon?

If you are at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and also want to enjoy the incredible sights and activities of Page, Arizona, you can get there in less than 2 hours .

The East Entrance Station to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon is 109 miles away from Page.

The East Entrance is the more desirable entrance of the two entrances at the South Rim because the South Entrance can have wait times of up to two hours in peak season.

When you are coming from Page to the East Entrance, you do not have to deal with the crowds coming from Las Vegas.

Entrance at Grand Canyon South Rim.

Page, Arizona is approximately 131 miles (2.5 hours) from the Grand Canyon Visitor Center at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.

The Grand Canyon Village at the South Rim is the main area where you will find most of the food, lodging, and exhibits.

Shuttle from the Grand Canyon South Rim to Page, AZ

There is an affordable shuttle that runs between the South Rim of the Grand Canyon and Page from April through September if you don’t want to make the drive or don’t have transportation.

National Park Express provides a shuttle with air-conditioning, USB chargers, reclining seats, and a restroom onboard. You’ll get to enjoy the scenic view of Northern Arizona while being shuttled to see Antelope Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, and Lake Powell.

Driving from the Grand Canyon South Rim to Page, AZ

If you are staying in Grand Canyon Village in the South Rim or have finished the many viewpoints on Hermits Road, you will head east on Desert View Drive towards the East Entrance Station .

There are plenty of viewpoints to stop at before you exit the park.

Our favorite viewpoint on the east side of the South Rim is Navajo Point. At 7,461 feet, Navajo Point is the highest viewpoint on the South Rim, offering the best panoramic views among all the rim viewpoints.

Road trip driving at sunset

If you are low on gas, fill up at the Chevron gas station at Desert View before you exit the park. There are more gas stations in Cameron, but that is 30 more miles east.

Once you hit Cameron, you will turn left onto US-89 to head north.

There are two ways to get there, with a shorter route and a more scenic route. We recommend staying on scenic US-89 the whole way there. This way keeps you closer to the Colorado River and provides many more vistas than Indian Route 20.

The shorter route only saves you about 5-10 minutes. You would turn right on Indian Route 20 about halfway to Page, but taking this route will rob you of some awesome landscapes just to save a few minutes.

Check out our road trip preparation guide before you leave!

Grand Canyon Tours from Phoenix & Scottsdale

The majority of Grand Canyon visitors who are not from the Southwest fly into Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix, AZ. The most direct route from Phoenix to the Grand Canyon South Rim is about 230 miles. There are several Grand Canyon tour companies that leave from Phoenix or Scottsdale, though there are fewer options for this service directly from the Metro Phoenix are than if you were leaving from northern Arizona. If you are wanting to head north towards the Grand Canyon directly from the Phoenix airport, Arizona Shuttle offers transportation service to Sedona and Flagstaff every couple of hours. But most visitors post up in the Scottsdale and Phoenix area for a few days and enjoy what this resort city has to offer before heading towards the wilds of the Great Southwest. Visiting the Grand Canyon for a day trip is definitely doable, but it makes for a long day. With the drive taking just under four hours each way, your trip will be no less breath-taking, but likely abbreviated. Going on an air or helicopter tour once you get to the canyon is another great way to make the most of your time at this Natural Wonder of the World. If spending time at the Grand Canyon is important to you, consider staying a night in Sedona , Flagstaff , or Williams .

Explore the entire Grand Canyon in one visit

Raft tours let visitors explore all 277 miles of the grand canyon.

Grand Canyon Expeditions allows guests to explore hidden side canyons.

Visiting the Grand Canyon is on many people’s bucket list. But even for those who visit, there isn’t an easy way to explore the entire national park — certainly not at once.

Grand Canyon Expeditions allows people to experience all 277 miles of the park from a unique vantage point — the Colorado River.

The Utah-based company’s rafting tours take visitors through side canyons that protect emerald-colored pools, hidden waterfalls, plants, flora, and wildlife. At night, guests sleep beside the river under an endless tapestry of stars.

Grand Canyon Expeditions, an authorized concessionaire of the National Park Service since 1964, offers eight — or nine-day motorized river trips and 14 — or 16-day dory (small boat) expeditions. All tours include round-trip transportation from Las Vegas, camping equipment, and first-class meals prepared with fresh meats and produce.

The company also has special-interest trips that focus on topics such as ecology, geology, history, astrology, photography and hiking.

The motorized river trips cover all 277 miles of the Grand Canyon, negotiating nearly 200 white-water rapids. No rowing is required. There are 14 guests per raft.

The motorized trips provide an exhilarating ride as the raft plunges through the canyon's waves. During stops, guests can play in the Grand Canyon’s pools and waterfalls, walk alongside the canyons, or sit in the shade and watch the river swirl by.

The 14- and 16-day dory trips let visitors take in every part of the Grand Canyon at a slower pace, allowing plenty of time to paddle down the river, drift, and wander. There are four guests per dory, and the company’s guides are trained in all aspects of the Grand Canyon and first aid. Just like the motorized trips, all camping equipment and meals are included.

The dory trips allow guests to explore the river like Major John Wesley Powell did in 1869 during the first government-sponsored passage through the Grand Canyon. Inspired by Powell, boatman Martin Litton introduced the dory to the Colorado River in the 1960s. The wooden boat can navigate the currents and obstacles of the river while letting people feel the nuances of the riffles and waves.

Both the motorized and dory excursions are a one-of-a-kind experience that let people unplug from the rest of the world.

“There is no cell phone coverage or access to Wi-Fi so that you can reset completely,” said Marty Mathis, president, Grand Canyon Expeditions. “You not only get in touch with nature, but you also forget about the urgencies of the world. People can get back in touch with nature and themselves.”

The company’s skilled river guides, who have mastered the art of Dutch oven cooking, prepare all the meals fresh every day. Each day starts with coffee, tea, juice, fruit, and breakfast foods. Lunches include meats, cheeses, and plenty of vegetables, and dinners include meat course served with a salad, vegetable, and dessert. Dietary restrictions can also be accommodated.

Guests must be at least eight years old for the motorized trip and at least 12 years old for the dory. An adult must accompany all minors.

Although the trips are all-inclusive and include food, sleeping bags, cots, and tents, guests must bring their own personal items. They are also able to bring alcohol if desired.

“We encourage anyone who can take this unforgettable adventure through the Grand Canyon,” said Mathis. “Our prices are the most competitive in the industry, and our guests can honestly say they experienced the entire Grand Canyon.”

The company also offers a large discount on fares for those who bring a large group together for a charter experience. The charters can be customized for each group’s interests and needs.

Most Colorado River rafting trips begin at Lees Ferry, located about 54 miles from Page, AZ. Page is the biggest town near the boat ramp, so many river runners supply their trips in Page. There are several Colorado River rafting trips to choose from; guests can do everything from just a calm, one-day float trip upriver through Horseshoe Bend up to Glen Canyon Dam, or go big and do a 28-day white water river trip down through the Grand Canyon. There are a dozen types of river trips in between, but going rafting down the Colorado River is certainly an adventure you should consider. Going downstream through the Grand Canyon does require a permit for both commercial and private river trips. There is no exception to this! The Grand Canyon has technical and class five rapids that require previous river experience in order to manage this trip safely.

However, going upstream from Lees Ferry is a fun, accessible, river adventure suitable for all levels of experience. Lees Ferry to Glen Canyon Dam is about 15 miles each way. Rangers said they recovered the body after it was found in the Colorado River on Friday, May 10, according to a National Park Service May 13 news release.

Though the body has yet to be identified, rangers said they believe it is that of Thomas L. Robison, 58, of New Mexico.

An initial search for Robinson began after his empty car was found at Lees Ferry in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area on April 21, rangers said in an April 24 news release, McClatchy News previously reported.

At the time, rangers said they believed Robinson tried to make his way down the Colorado River with his 11-year-old Welsh Corgi on a self-made raft.

The Coconino County Medical Examiner will confirm the body’s identification, rangers said, adding an investigation is ongoing.

Lees Ferry, “ a natural corridor between Utah and Arizona ,” “is the only place within Glen Canyon where visitors can drive to the Colorado River in over 700 miles of canyon country, right up to the first rapid in the Grand Canyon,” according to the National Park Service.

Google Search gets biggest overhaul in years with new generative AI features

Google is bringing some of the biggest changes to its search platform in years.

Google will soon start using GenAI to organize some search results pages

At the Google I/O 2024 developer conference on Tuesday, Google announced that it plans to use generative AI to organize the entire search results page for some search results. The AI Overview feature becomes generally available Tuesday, after a stint in Google's AI Labs program. A search results page using generative AI for its ranking mechanism will have wide-reaching consequences for online publishers.

Google Photos introduces an AI search feature, Ask Photos

Google Photos is getting an AI infusion with the launch of an experimental feature, Ask Photos, powered by Google's Gemini AI model. The new feature, which rolls out later this summer, will allow users to search across their Google Photos collection using natural language queries that leverage an AI's understanding of their photo's content and other metadata. While before users could search for specific people, places or things in their photos, thanks to natural language processing, the AI upgrade will make finding the right content more intuitive and less of a manual search process, Google announced Tuesday at its annual Google I/O 2024 developer conference.

LearnLM is Google's new family of AI models for education

Google says it has developed a new family of generative AI models "fine-tuned" for learning: LearnLM. A collaboration between Google's DeepMind AI research division and Google Research, LearnLM models — built on top of Google's Gemini models — are designed to "conversationally" tutor students on a range of subjects, Google says. LearnLM is already powering features across Google products, including in YouTube, Google's Gemini apps, Google Search and Google Classroom.
