Looking for hidden gems to visit in SC? Try these 13 unique spots and experiences in Hilton Head

Have you visited Hilton Head Island before?

Whether you’re a long-time local, summer vacationer or part-time resident, you may believe that you’ve seen everything there is to see on the island. But, is that actually true? Hilton Head has several surprising treasures that not many know exist through simple online searches.

Known as a popular tourist destination and ‘world’s best’ winner several times over, Hilton Head Island has its fair share of well-known, popular attractions and ‘must do’ activities that almost anyone who frequents the island knows about.

Such attractions and activities include the island’s famed 12 miles of white sand beaches, world-class golf courses, the Harbour Town Lighthouse, dolphin cruises, Hilton Head’s own resident mermaid , Salty Dog Cafe, Coligny Plaza, and Shelter Cove’s Neptune.

However, if you’re curious about some of Hilton Head’s lesser known attractions, experiences and sights, here’s a list of 13 you can visit this year.

Charles Fraser Statue

Placed just off the side of the road, you may have noticed this sight without ever giving it much thought.

Located on the south end of the island on Pope Avenue nearly halfway to Coligny Plaza, this hidden statue is a token toward part of the island’s history, especially to the Sea Pines resort community.

Charles Fraser, the man behind much of Hilton Head Island’s story, advocated to keep the island’s flora and fauna to preserve the natural beauty of Hilton Head as he worked to develop the resort destination.

A statue of Fraser walking beside an alligator can be found in Compass Rose Park , which is a small, quiet park dedicated to remembering the island’s unique history. It includes art, water features and covered plazas.

Hilton Head Island Rear Range Lighthouse

Also known as the Leamington Lighthouse, the Hilton Head Island Rear Range Lighthouse is located in the Leamington community of the Palmetto Dunes Resort on Hilton Head Island. This lighthouse can be entered through Palmetto Dunes, is free to visit and can be found between the 5th and 15th greens of the Arthur Hills Golf Course . For your visit, it’s important to note that passes are not given after 5 p.m. and motorcycles are not allowed in Palmetto Dunes.

The inside of this lighthouse is no longer open to the public. However, it is featured on the National Register of Historic Places and is part of the Inventory of Historic Light Stations. Additionally, visitors can get their U.S. Lighthouse Society Passport Book stamped at three different nearby locations. These include the Arthur Hills Pro Shop, Palmetto Dunes General Store and the Palmetto Dunes Welcome Center.

This lighthouse is considered to be “the one true lighthouse” of Hilton Head Island, according to the lighthouse’s website, the only historic lighthouse of Hilton Head and one of only a handful of surviving lighthouses in the state of South Carolina.

However, at the moment, the lighthouse is currently closed to visitors due to a golf course project, but is expected to reopen on Aug. 27.

Audubon Newhall Preserve

The Audubon Newhall Preserve is a great place to observe and be surrounded by nature in a less populated area of the island.

The preserve is open daily from sunrise to sunset and has free guided tours led by a Master Birder every Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m. No reservations are required in advance. Parking is available to the public and the preserve is dog-friendly as long as pets remain leashed and are picked up after.

The Audubon Newhall Preserve is a 50-acre nature preserve with over 140 recorded bird species on the south end of the island with interconnected trails that add up to around a mile total with wide paths and an observation deck.

The preserve is located at 55 Palmetto Bay Road, which can be found on the south end of Hilton Head Island. It is owned and operated by the Hilton Head Island Audubon Society.

Stoney-Baynard Ruins

The Stoney-Baynard ruins on Hilton Head’s south end is a sight to see for any history buff scouring the area. Located in the resort community of Sea Pines, visitors can still see bits of the old home to this day.

The mansion was once used as quarters for Federal forces and was later burned down, allegedly by Confederate arsonists, and the mansion’s tabby foundation, a corner wall, and the foundations of other outbuildings are what remain. These ruins are listed on the National Register of Historic Places list.

Today, the ruins are located off of Plantation Drive in Sea Pines. Baynard Ruins Park is on the right just after passing Baynard Cove Road and Marsh Drive.

Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park

Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park , located on Hilton Head Island’s north end at 40 Harriet Tubman Way, is a place of historical significance and is the location of the first freedmen community established during the Civil War.

The park features interpretive signs for visitors to learn from as well as beach access, walking trails, an observation gazebo, historic exhibits and a picnic pavilion. In addition, the island’s Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park is one of 26 sites in the state of South Carolina that is recognized on the Reconstruction Era National Historic Network .

Visitors may go on a self-guided tour of the land or a private tour on select dates and several programs and events take place in the area.

Sea Pines Forest Preserve

Located within the Sea Pines community on the south end of Hilton Head Island, the forest preserve may come as a surprise to many who view the island’s southernmost end as a shopping, dining and golfing destination nestled throughout winding neighborhoods and between the South Beach Marina and Harbour Town.

The preserve has been a protected area for wildlife, their inhabitants and guests to explore the outdoors since 1970 and encompasses 605 acres of natural flora and fauna. The Sea Pines Forest Preserve includes boardwalks over wetlands, pathways suitable for horseback riding, fishing docks and bridges.

The preserve is open from sunrise to sunset. Guests looking to explore the area will have to pay a $9 gate fee into Sea Pines, unless they hold a resident or guest pass.

Gullah Heritage Trail Tours

Hilton Head Island’s Gullah Heritage Trail Tours was founded in 1996 by a Gullah Family Partnership on Hilton Head Island. Since then, the “family has been involved in preserving Gullah cultural heritage, blending Gullah cultural values in the SC-GA Low Country, for more than 40 years,” states the company’s website.

Based on the island, Gullah Heritage Trail Tours aims to cater to visitors and locals in the Lowcountry who have an interest in learning more about the history of Gullah culture in the surrounding area. This company gives guests the opportunity to learn more about the rich history and add an important learning element to their vacation or aid a curiosity in the deeper history of the Lowcountry. The pick-up location for tours can be found at 70 Honey Horn Drive, Hilton Head Island, SC on the north end of the island.

Adventure Hilton Head

Adventure Hilton Head is a special place on the island’s north end where guests can explore their more daring, adventurous sides. The zip-line canopy tour offers scenic water views with a series of seven different zip-lines, a swinging sky bridge and aerial staircase, a 900 foot-long dual-racing zip-line and incorporates some of the history of the island. In addition, the Aerial Adventure consists of six different high ropes courses with many obstacles including swings, nets, bridges and even a bike. It is one way to view Hilton Head Island from quite a different angle. Adventure Hilton Head can be found at 33 Broad Creek Marina Way, Hilton Head Island, SC 29926.

Escape Room Hilton Head

Escape Room Hilton Head is a perfect rainy day adventure for any adventurous or problem-solving family. Featuring several different rooms to choose from, Escape Room Hilton Head is open every day of the week and advertises a rate of $34.95 for anyone over 6 years old. The establishment can be found at 10 Executive Park Drive Suite 102, Hilton Head Island, SC 29928 toward the south end of the island.

Hilton Head Distillery

Hilton Head Distillery , Hilton Head Island’s first craft distillery, offers a unique experience for guests. Offering a wide-variety of activities, the distillery gives patrons the opportunity to engage in a hands-on mixology experience, behind-the scenes tours, tastings, signature cocktail classes and cocktail bar. Options given by the distillery are a much-talked about affair among adults and ranked as a ‘must-do’ for many adult parties or gatherings. The distillery can be found at 14 Cardinal Road, Hilton Head Island, SC 29926.

Hilton Head Helicopter Tours

Hilton Head Helicopter Tours is an incredible experience offered ‘on’ the island that lets guests view Hilton Head from a completely different perspective. The tours allow fliers to view the island’s Lowcountry beauty from the sky and take in the sights and colors from an entirely different vantage point. Advertised as “perfect for families, couples, and friends,” the company offers several different tours for guests to choose from.

Hilton Head Segway

Hilton Head Segway is yet another unique opportunity to view the island in a different way. With several Segway tour options, the company offers premier Segway rides and tours at three different locations on Hilton Head Island around Honey Horn, historic Mitchelville and centrally around mid-island. The Segway is electrically powered and eco-friendly for eco-conscious guests. Segways are gyroscopically stabilized for a safe and fun experience, which can be learned to ride within just a few minutes for most people.

Island Skiff Adventure Tours

Island Skiff Adventure Tours is a unique experience where attendees have the opportunity to drive their own skiffs while following a guide boat and exploring local marshes around Hilton Head Island, Bluffton, Daufuskie Island and other undeveloped, nearby areas. The tours make stops for dolphin sightings, and guests will be able to learn more about the history of the surrounding area. The company also offers a similar tour for those who are a bit more thrill seeking and would prefer a speed boat ride to that of a skiff boat.

15 Must-See Historical Sites On Hilton Head Island, SC

Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, is well known for its pristine sandy beaches, luxurious resorts, world class golf courses, hundreds of shops and restaurants, and great weather, but it is also an island rich in history and culture. From Native American shell rings to Civil War ruins, read on to find out how you can seek out and explore the rich tapestry the next time you visit this amazing island.

Some History Basics

Hilton Head Island is named for the English sea captain William Hilton who was hired by a syndicate of Barbadian planters and claimed the island for England. Hilton “discovered” the island in 1663, but European colonization did not occur until around 1800. Before the Civil War the plantations of Hilton Head (using enslaved labor) prospered growing rice, indigo, and cotton.

The Hilton Head Island as we know today began with the remarkable foresight of one man, Charles Fraser. His dream was to fashion a distinctive vacation resort where environmental considerations were integrated with its development. Fraser was a daring trailblazer who confronted popular sentiment in the 1950s to craft Sea Pines, an enormously successful and environmentally thoughtful resort development.

Coastal Discovery Museum

A great first stop in exploring Hilton Head Island’s rich history is the Coastal Discovery Museum. The museum, housed in a former plantation house, is located on 68 splendidly preserved acres of forest, field, and marsh. The museum offers permanent and rotating exhibits on the natural and cultural history of the island, from Native American times before the settlement of Europeans, through the resort boom of the 1960s and 1970s.

But perhaps even more striking than the exhibits are the classes and tours the museum offers. You can learn how to weave traditional sweet grass baskets perfected by the Gullah people of the island, or how to pitch a net in the traditional Gullah style of fishing practiced here. You can also tour historic forts and learn the history of the Revolutionary War on the island.

The museum, trails, gardens, live oaks, butterfly enclosure, and horses are just a few of the fun experiences you will encounter during your visit.

Zion Chapel of Ease and Cemetery

This is the site of the first chapel on Hilton Head which was completed in 1788. All that is left of the Chapel is its still and haunting graveyard.

This location was the center of activity on the island in the late 18th century and early 19th centuries, as the chapel was in close proximity to a militia muster house and a Masonic Lodge. It is also home to the oldest existing structure on the island, the Baynard Mausoleum, which was built in 1846 by William Baynard, a wealthy plantation owner.

The cemetery contains the graves and memorials for four Revolutionary War Patriots: Isaac Baldwine, James Davant, John Stoney, and Charles Davant. Charles Davant was ambushed by a Tory militia unit, was mortally wounded, and is the only known Patriot casualty on the island.

The chapel was abandoned and destroyed in 1868

Gullah Heritage Tours

Take a tour to learn about the Gullah culture of the Sea Islands including Hilton Head Island. The Gullah people are descended from enslaved West Africans who cultivated and harvested the famed Sea Island Cotton.

Because the Sea Islands were so remote (both before the Civil War and for 100 years after freedom) and reachable only by boat, the descendents of the enslaved people developed their own rich culture that keeps alive much of their African Heritage including literature and folklore, cuisine, and dialect. Before 1960, the vast majority of people who lived on Hilton Head Island were descendents of slaves.

The Gullah Heritage Trail Tours, led by people of Gullah descent who were born and raised on the island, include some of the most important sites on the island, giving visitors a sense of Gullah life before the bridges and resorts colossally changed both the landscape and the lifestyle.

Civil War Forts

Before its beaches were marked with resorts and vacation homes, Hilton Head Island was dotted with forts. Its location and size made it strategically important for defending the South Carolina mainland. Four forts were built on Hilton Head during the Civil War.

Although there is not much remaining of the old encampments (that ultimately housed over 50,000 Union troops) traces of the original earth works and historical markers tell the story of the Island’s role in the war.

Fort Walker – The story begins with Fort Walker on Port Royal Sound. It was built by Confederate soldiers in 1861 to help protect the critical southern ports of Charleston, Beaufort, and Savannah. Later that same year, Union forces successfully attacked the fort during the battle of Port Royal Sound, thus gaining a strategic foothold to aid the Union blockade of the ports. Today, all that remains are earthworks and numerous interpretive markers in Port Royal Plantation. Fort Sherman and Fort Mitchel – Two additional forts were built in 1862 by the Union Army to continue the defense of the Union blockade and to prevent Confederate assaults. Fort Sherman (the remains of which are still visible in Port Royal Plantation) and the earthworks of Fort Mitchel in Hilton Head Plantation are administered by the Heritage Library Foundation.  Fort Howell – The fourth fort, Fort Howell, was built to defend Mitchelville, the nearby village built by the country’s first emancipated slaves. The earthwork remnants are partially eroded and covered by trees.

For access to Fort Mitchel, you may acquire a Hilton Head Plantation gate pass at no charge, however the pass is only good for Fort Mitchel. To see both Fort Walker and Fort Sherman you must have a gate pass to Port Royal Plantation or sign up for a guided tour by the Coastal Discovery Museum (843.689.6757) or the Heritage Library Foundation (843.686.6560). Fort Howell is located at 160 Beach Road. It is open to the general public for self guided tours everyday from 8:00am to 5:00pm. There are interpretive markers erected by the Hilton Head Island Trust.

Mitchelville Freedom Park

During the Civil War, freed slaves fled to Hilton Head Island to a freedman’s town established by General Mitchel of the Union Army. That town, called Mitchelville, grew to over 1500 citizens and became the first self-governed freedman’s town in the United States.

Often referred to as The Port Royal Experiment, under General Mitchel’s direction before the end of the war, freed slaves worked, attended school, built a town, built churches, and more.

You can visit Mitchelville on one of the Gullah history tours on the island or take a drive down Beach City Road, past the churches, homes, and school building still standing there today.

Harbour Town Lighthouse and Museum

The iconic lighthouse in Harbour Town was actually not built as a lighthouse at all. It was built as a tourist attraction when Hilton Head Island was first developed as a resort destination

Conceived by Sea Pines founder Charles Fraser, the Harbour Town Lighthouse has become the landmark most associated with Hilton Head Island.

Years later, the interior of the lighthouse was turned into a museum with photographs and memorabilia lining the walls, offering visitors who climb the 114 steps to the top of the tower a colorful history of the island.

Liberty Oak

Did you know the Harbour Town Yacht Basin was built around the Liberty Oak? Sea Pines founder Charles Fraser had a passion for protecting the environment and demanded the magnificent tree be saved during the construction of the yacht basin. Regardless of the considerable additional expense, the marina was built around the tree as Mr. Fraser requested.

Over the years, it has served as the venue for thousands of Gregg Russel concerts and other celebratory events (from weddings to proposals) and even a memorial for Charles Fraser himself. The LIberty Oak is approximately 325 years old, close to 555 feet tall and 90 feet across, and estimated to weigh 38 tons.

The Sea Pines Forest Preserve is home to a thriving ecosystem, but it also plays a critical role in preserving Hilton Head Island’s prehistory. Long before the island was a popular vacation destination, and even before the armies found the island a strategic location during the wars, the island served as the hunting and harvesting grounds for ancient Native Americans more than 4,000 years ago. One of the striking shell rings they left behind is snuggled within the Forest Preserve for visitors to experience and enjoy. Historians believe it was a communal gathering place or a site where rituals were performed.

How do you get to the Sea Pines shell ring? Enter via the Greenwood Drive access off the Sea Pines traffic circle. Pay the small entrance fee; the price is well worth the adventure. About one mile ahead, on the left, is the sign for Sea Pines Forest Preserve. Pull in, park your car, pick up the visitor map and follow the scenic trails through the preserve.

Braddock Point’s Cemetery

One of several Gullah family cemeteries on the Island, this small graveyard, also known as the Harbour Town Cemetery, is the burial grounds for the Chisolm and Williams families, descendents of enslaved West Africans who worked on Braddock’s Point Plantation.

Located on Lighthouse Lane in Harbour Town, near the 18th fairway of the golf course in Sea Pines, the cemetery is reputed to contain the graves of slaves, but the oldest surviving headstones date to the Civil War. Following West African tradition, some of the headstones have ceramic plates pressed into them to provide the deceased something to eat in the next world.

Old Lawton Rice Field

At Old Lawton Rice Field, visitors can view marshes and wildlife from a boardwalk featuring three observation decks. This fascinating piece of history is accessible by walking or biking on the lush, historic hail of the Sea Pine Forest Preserve. Stoney Baynard Ruins

Revolutionary War captain Jack Stoney built Baynard Plantation, part of Braddock’s Point Plantation. His family remained there for several decades until a Stoney heir lost the property to William Baynard in a late night poker game. When Union forces invaded the island in 1861, the Baynards evacuated the property. It served as Union headquarters for the remainder of the war. Although the Baynard family reacquired the property after the war, the house burned in 1869 and was never rebuilt.

Open to the public, the Stoney Baynard ruins include portions of the main house, the chimney footing for what may have been an overseer’s house, and the foundation of a slave house.

Leamington Lighthouse

The Hilton Head Island Rear Range Lighthouse, also known as the Leamington Lighthouse, is located in the Leamington neighborhood of Palmetto Dunes Resort overlooking the Arthur Hills Golf Course. It was built between 1879 and 1880 as part of a larger system of navigation lights guiding ships to Port Royal Sound. Although the faux lighthouse at Harbour Town is more widely known, the Leamington Lighthouse is the island’s one true lighthouse.

Featured on the National Register of Historic Places, the lighthouse was taken out of service in the 1930s. Today, only the 92-foot structure survives along with a vintage brick oil house and a water cistern.

Locals share stories that the lighthouse is haunted by “The Blue Lady,” the daughter of the last lighthouse operator.

53 LeamingtonLane Hilton Head Island, SC 29928 (843) 785-1106 https://www.hiltonheadlighthouse.com/

Next to the Leamington Lighthouse stands one of Hilton Head Island’s oldest live oak trees. A live oak is a large, sprawling, picturesque tree usually graced with Spanish moss. The tree is approximately seventy feet tall and has a canopy spread of approximately one hundred fifty feet.

The diameter of the tree was measured using a forester’s diameter tape to be one hundred nine inches. Using industry calculations this would make the tree to be 425 to 450 years old.

Although Hilton Head Island is home to many world class golf courses and resorts, much of the landscape remains as it was when sighted by William Hilton’s ship more than 350 years ago. Natural beauty, stunning seascapes, and rich historical fabric make the island a singular experience. On Hilton Head Island you are never far from history. So the next time you find yourself on the island, be sure to stop and explore these amazing historical sites before you head back home.

Segway hilton head.

This was absolutely fantastic! We did the eco tour with Rick, and he was a wonderful guide. Our family had ages 13-80 in our group, and everyone had an amazing adventure. We learned about native plants and history. Also, we saw several alligators! Highly recommend!

Dream Come True!

My daughter and I had such a wonderful experience on our "fun" tour. We used Segways for the first time. It was my daughter's dream to go on a Segway tour and I have always wanted to see alligators in the "wild". This experience made two dreams come true. We had a great time and Larry mixed just the right amount of information with fun. Larry also gave us a fantastic recommendation for dinner on our last day in HIlton Head. We would highly recommend these tours to anyone. It was a terrific day.

Something Fun and Exciting To Try

First time segway riders here and it was fun! Not to hard at all and a great time and getting to see a few gators, too

Here are the 4 best things to do in Hilton Head in June, Tripadvisor says

Whether you’re a longtime local or visiting tourist, Hilton Head Island is filled with new things to explore.

To make sure you’ve at least experienced the best things to do on the island, Tripadvisor recently released its list of the 2024 top attractions to do in Hilton Head this month.

Here are the top attractions on the list for June.

Hilton Head Distillery

Are you over the age of 21? Head on over to Hilton Head Distillery , which was ranked as the best on the list for attractions on Hilton Head Island, and is the island’s only distillery and craft spirits locale. The distillery offers a unique experience for guests with a wide variety of activities such as the opportunity to engage in a hands-on mixology experience, daily behind-the-scenes tours, tastings, signature cocktail classes and a bottle shop.

Such options are a much-talked-about affair among adults and are ranked as a ‘must-do’ for many adult parties or gatherings. The distillery can be found at 14 Cardinal Road, Hilton Head Island, SC 29926.

Coligny Beach

Landing in second was the famed Coligny Beach . Accompanied by Coligny Plaza, this area on the island’s south end is a great place to spend the day with free parking, a shopping center, restaurants and miles of white sand beaches. Coligny Beach Park on its own has a splash pad, restrooms, outdoor showers, seating, free parking and more.

The beach’s public access point is located at 1 Coligny Circle.

Hilton Head Island Bike Trails

Hilton Head Island’s bike trails may be one of the most widely-mentioned attractions the island has.

The Town of Hilton Head Island’s website shows several different interactive or printable map options for the many bike trails that the island has to offer.

Sea Pines Forrest Preserve

Rounding out the top four best attractions on Hilton Head Island is the Sea Pines Forest Preserve . The 605-acre area of protected land on the south end of the island in the Sea Pines resort community is dedicated to wildlife habitat and outdoor exploration.

Following the construction of the preserve’s first trails in the early 1970s, Sea Pines Forest Preserve has grown to include bridle paths, wetland boardwalks, bridges and fishing docks. Aside from exploring the preserve through the many leisurely walking trails, horseback rides, guided boat tours, fishing expeditions or wagon tours are available for guests’ enjoyment. Visiting hours for the forest preserve are sunrise to sunset, which allows for an optimal day of exploration.
