Everything you need to know about Holland America cruise cabins and suites

Ashley Kosciolek

Editor's Note

Choosing a cabin on a Holland America cruise is never easy because the line excels at making all categories enticing.

Across its fleet, the line's accommodations are comfortable, with a neutral decor that ensures they weather the test of time. That aesthetic is in keeping with Holland America's desire to design ships that balance innovation with classic, elegant style and to blend a pride in the line's long heritage with the needs of a modern traveler.

From basic digs to swanky suites, we'll cover the different types of Holland America cabins and help you figure out which one might be right for you on your next voyage.

Holland America cabin primer

holland america cruise ship rooms

Holland America cabins fall into four main categories: insides (no window or balcony), outsides (with windows that don't open), balconies (with walk-out porch areas) and suites (high-end accommodations, generally with more space and better amenities).

If you're looking for a specialty cabin, those are available, too. Holland America offers a selection of accessible rooms on every one of its ships. They span all cabin categories, including suites, and they're provided in several types: fully accessible, fully accessible single-side approach (with both left- and right-side approaches as options) and ambulatory accessible. Available types vary by ship.

Spa cabins come in inside, outside, balcony and Neptune Suite varieties. They offer the same square footage as standard cabins in each of those categories and share the same layout. What sets them apart is that they provide spa-themed amenities, such as cut fruit and flavored water, a spa concierge to help with booking treatments at the Greenhouse Spa and in-room fitness equipment, such as yoga mats and exercise DVDs.

Select Holland America vessels also offer solo accommodations designed for one person. They feature full-size beds instead of queens, and they come only in the outside category, ranging from 127-172 square feet.

The line's only rooms designed specifically with families in mind are outside family cabins, which range from 222-231 square feet and sleep up to five people with a queen bed, a two-person sofa bed and a single bunk that pulls down from the ceiling. These cabins are also outfitted with a split bathroom setup — one room with a bathtub/shower, sink and toilet and another with a shower and sink.

Several inclusions come standard in cabins on all Holland America ships. Even the most basic accommodations feature a queen bed that can split into two twins, a couple of nightstands, a vanity/desk area with a chair or stool and a phone, a closet with shelves and room for hanging clothes, a safe, a minifridge, a variety of outlets and USB ports, a private bathroom and daily housekeeping services. You'll also find a TV with a handful of channels, ship-sponsored content and free movies.

Some cabins also include sofas, some of which have pull-out beds. Other cabins designed to sleep more than two cruisers may also have bunks that pull down from the ceiling.

Unlike most other lines, Holland America provides some standard amenities that other lines only offer to passengers booked in higher-tiered cabins. They include Elemis toiletries, bathrobes, shoeshine service, fresh fruit, signature pillow-top mattresses and complimentary 24/7 room service.

Inside cabins on Holland America ships

holland america cruise ship rooms

Inside or interior cabins on Holland America's vessels range in size from 143-225 square feet and come with the standard amenities previously mentioned.

Inside rooms don't have a view, but that means they offer near-total darkness each night, making for great sleep. They're also generally the least expensive accommodations, so they can be a terrific value if all you're planning to do in your cabin is sleep and shower.

Outside cabins on Holland America ships

holland america cruise ship rooms

Holland America's outside or ocean view cabins are slightly larger than inside cabins, providing 175-282 square feet of space plus a window through which you'll have access to natural light.

Travelers booked in ocean view rooms have access to the basic amenities above.

Balcony cabins on Holland America ships

holland america cruise ship rooms

With 228-405 square feet of space (including the private veranda), balcony cabins are the largest non-suite cabins and come with basic amenities. They offer not only natural light but also fresh air via a sliding-glass door that grants access to a small private balcony area with chairs and a table.

Several varieties exist, including standard balcony accommodations, obstructed view (which means you might have a life boat partially blocking your ocean vista) and aft-facing (which gives you a view off the back of the ship, rather than the side).

Suites on Holland America ships

All suite passengers have access to additional amenities, including fresh flowers, a pillow menu, a stocked minibar and binoculars for use during each sailing.

Neptune and Pinnacle Suites come with additional perks, such as higher-end toiletries, an in-cabin coffee and espresso machine, a Bose Bluetooth audio system, a special in-cabin daily breakfast with mimosas, complimentary laundry and dry-cleaning services, a tote bag and a welcome glass of sparkling wine at dinner on embarkation day.

Additionally, all passengers booked in suites automatically receive access to Club Orange, a program that allows cruisers to eat in a private dining room and skip the line at the shore excursions and guest services desks, as well as during tendering. Exclusive onboard events — such as behind-the-scenes tours, private spa consultations and Q&A sessions — are also offered for Club Orange members. Passengers not booked in suites have the option to purchase Club Orange perks.

Learn more about each suite type below.

Vista Suites

holland america cruise ship rooms

Vista Suites are essentially mini-suites — balcony cabins with a bit more space (260-356 square feet). Like balcony rooms, they come with standard amenities and a walk-out veranda with a table and chairs.

This category also includes accommodations with aft-facing balcony views.

Signature Suites

holland america cruise ship rooms

These suites, with even more space (393-400 square feet), are similar to balcony cabins and Vista Suites in terms of amenities and inclusions.

However, they include king-size beds instead of queens, as well as a pull-down bunk, a Murphy bed or a sofa bed, depending on the configuration. This makes them a great higher-end option for families.

Neptune Suites

holland america cruise ship rooms

Neptune Suites span 465-502 square feet. In addition to more space and king-size beds, they include bathrooms with dual sinks and vanities, as well as whirlpool bathtubs in some configurations.

Passengers booked in Neptune Suites have a private concierge and access to the exclusive Neptune Lounge, which offers daily continental breakfast, tea, light snacks and a place to watch TV or relax with a book.

Pinnacle Suites

holland america cruise ship rooms

Pinnacle Suites, found on Holland America's newer Pinnacle-class ships, are the largest and most upscale rooms in the fleet. They run about 1,290 square feet, including the balcony, and they're divided into separate rooms — a living room, dining room (complete with microwave and pantry) and bedroom with a king-size bed.

A separate dressing room provides space for your clothes, and the bathroom and balcony each have their own whirlpools. A sofa bed sleeps two additional passengers, and the suite also includes a guest toilet.

Cruisers booked in these accommodations have access to a variety of complimentary services, including those of a private concierge. Other amenities include an in-cabin stereo system and entry to the Neptune Lounge.

Bottom line

Holland America offers a variety of classy, timeless cabins to suit the needs of cruise travelers, from inside cabins that are great for sleeping to lavish suites that entitle you to a plethora of exclusive amenities.

The line also caters to passengers with specific needs, including families, solo vacationers and travelers with limited mobility. No matter what you prioritize in a cruise room, Holland America will have plenty of choices for you.

Holland America MS Rotterdam Cabins & Staterooms With Pictures

Everything you need to know about staterooms on the hal rotterdam.

Welcome aboard the luxurious Rotterdam cruise ship, where sophistication meets coziness in each of its 1,300+ staterooms. From the modern & light wood tones to contemporary art and sophisticated patterned carpet, the ambiance is designed to soothe. Stepping into the cabins on the MS Rotterdam feels like entering a luxury suite at a Four Seasons or Ritz Carlton hotel (albeit smaller). The light-blocking curtains and velvet throw pillows add a touch of elegance to the space. Each cabin includes a large flat-screen television, safe, and mini-bar stocked with beverages (for purchase).

What truly sets the Rotterdam apart are its balconies where you can take in the ocean breeze and soak up the stunning views while enjoying your morning coffee or evening cocktail. Balconies are available in nearly 70% of the ship’s suites and staterooms, considered a high ratio of terraces for this size ship.

Families can opt for one of the 32 Family Ocean Views, complete with a third berth that opens from the ceiling and two bathrooms one with a shower and sink, and another with a bathtub/shower, sink, and toilet. These stateroom types are exclusive to the newer Holland America Line cruise ships (The Pinnacle Class)

No matter what stateroom type you choose, expect intelligently designed spaces with plenty of electrical outlets, adjustable bedside reading lights, and ample closet space. Holland America’s Mariner’s Dream Beds have firm and comfortable Euro-Top mattresses and pillows available in down and foam. While we found the pillows to be a little uncomfortable, the room steward did offer to swap them out for different pillow types towards the end of the cruise.

The MS Rotterdam offers a good variety of television programming and a selection of complementary movies, old and new. News outlets provided include BBC, MSNBC, and Fox.

Verandah Staterooms on MS Rotterdam

“Verandah Staterooms” or balcony cabins are the most plentiful and popular cabin types on the Rotterdam cruise ship. While this may be a typical room, the balcony cabins are quite comfortable and feel anything BUT typical when compared to other cruise lines. The standard balcony cabin or Verandah Stateroom is equipped with a mini bar, queen bed, sofa, and desk area perfect for getting ready in the mornings (it’s also the only place the included hair dryer will be reasonably useful). Storage is plentiful in the closets and drawers and there’s plenty of room under the beds for storing luggage.

A nice touch found in the rooms was a hair dryer, makeup mirror, robes, an umbrella as well as blankets to use on the balcony during chilly evenings (a VERY Dutch thing to have!)

The bathrooms in the balcony cabins are beautiful and well designed. The first thing you’ll notice is how good the lighting is. Unlike many cruise ships with horrible bathroom lighting, Holland America really put some thought into how people use the mirrors in the bathrooms to get ready in the evening, requiring decent light. Additionally, there is a wonderful glass shower with a rain head and intuitive controls. Gone are the days of the shower curtain sticking to you the entire time you try to bathe!

The Bathroom (360 View) on the HAL Rotterdam

Suites on the holland america rotterdam , vista suites.

The Rotterdam cruise ship offers various suite categories with different sizes and amenities to cater to the diverse preferences of guests that HAL is known for. The Vista Suites, which measure between 260 and 356 square feet, have an inverted layout with a sitting area off the entrance and a bedroom that opens onto the verandah. The bathroom is equipped with a shower featuring a massage head, fresh flowers, and binoculars are provided to Signature and Vista Suite guests during the cruise.

Signature Suites

The Signature Suites are larger, measuring between 393 and 400 square feet. They feature floor-to-ceiling windows with a verandah, a sitting area, and a bedroom with two twins that convert to a queen or king-size bed. The bathroom has a dual sink vanity (whereas regular cabins have a single sink), a whirlpool bath with shower, and a separate shower.

Neptune Suites

The Neptune Suites, measuring between 465 and 502 square feet, are even more spacious, featuring full-length windows with a verandah twice the length of those in a typical Verandah Stateroom, a large sitting area, and a bedroom with two twins that can be converted to a king size bed. The bathroom is equipped with dual sinks and can either have a whirlpool bath with a separate shower or just a separate shower.

The Pinnacle and Neptune Suites offer additional perks, such as upgraded Elemis amenities, complimentary laundry and dry cleaning services, exclusive access to the Neptune concierge lounge, and dining at Club Orange. Most of these top-tier suites are situated on Deck 7 closer to the Neptune Lounge. Guests in these categories also enjoy priority embarkation, tendering, and dining and seating requests, on top of all the amenities available in lower categories.

Pinnacle Suite

Finally, the Pinnacle Suite is the largest suite available, measuring 1,290 square feet. This luxurious suite features a spacious living room with a sofa bed, a separate dining room with a pantry, microwave, and refrigerator, a bedroom with a king-sized bed, and a huge verandah with a private whirlpool. The marble bathroom is equipped with a whirlpool tub and separate shower, and there is an additional guest bathroom with a sink and toilet. Guests in the Pinnacle Suite are also provided with a private concierge to cater to their needs.

Special Cabin Types on MS Rotterdam

Spa suites and staterooms.

The Spa Suite cabins are basically typical Verandah rooms with a few extras and is really the only seemingly worthless option on Holland America Line (personal opinion of course). These cabin types are equipped with robes, slippers, and a yoga mat, therefore they are now called “Spa” cabins. However, unlike most other cruise lines with similar cabins,  you do NOT get access to the thermal suites / spa with a Holland America “spa” cruise cabin.

Accessible Rooms

Accessible rooms are equipped as expected with larger doorways, showers, and accessible features for passengers with mobility issues.

Connecting Rooms

There are a limited number of connecting rooms available which makes it convenient for parties traveling together. We have friends that regularly travel in groups and they absolutely insist on connecting cabins! These cabins are also perfect for multi-generational families traveling together on an HAL cruise.

Studio Single Ocean View Staterooms

For solo travelers, the Rotterdam offers 12 Single Ocean Views, which may be small at 127 square feet, but they are a more affordable and supplement-free option for solo / single cruisers. Being able to cruise without the ridiculous single supplement is a great trend in the right direction for people who travel alone (Thank NCL for pioneering the solo cabins!)

Holland America MS Rotterdam Cabins To Avoid (If Possible)

As on any cruise ship, there are less desirable cabins which should be avoided if possible. However, many people who book promotional rates such as “best available” or even free rooms for casino promos may not have the choice of room or room type.

Good To Know

If you are on a promotion and cannot pick your cabin, upgrade to the Club Orange and one of the perks is getting the best cabin in the class you’re booked, therefore being able to choose your location.

Rooms directly below the Lido pool

Some people say they can hear movement from above when the ship is at capacity, but normally only during the day, since the pools are effectively closed in the evenings. So, avoiding these rooms is only important if you are a napper during the day.

Staterooms directly above the World Stage

Again, some passengers say they hear noise from the World Stage, but most of those shows end relatively early, so unless you’re a person that turns in for bed by 10 pm, there’s probably no worry about these cabins.

Cabins under the BB King Stage

The biggest complaint from passengers are those with cabins on Deck 1, below the music walk and performance areas like the BB King music stage. Passengers sometimes feel the sound is so noticeable that earplugs are necessary. This is subjective of course, as some people will be more sensitive to sounds than others. It’s worth noting, however, that the bands stop at 12 midnight sharp, so if you aren’t one to go to bed before the entertainment is over, then this location likely won’t be a problem for you.

Obstructed View Verandah Stateroom

Some people may hate the idea of an inanimate object staring at them, but you’ll see by the picture, that even though the stateroom is classified as an “obstructed” view, it’s not bad at all. So for the right price, this may appeal to cruisers who want the outdoor space or the ability to open a door for fresh air and may not care that there’s a lifeboat near the balcony.

A Tour of an Inside Cabin on ms Zuiderdam

Have you ever done something, thinking “I guess this is better than nothing,” but with time and daylight and further reflection revised your assessment to, “nothing would have been infinitely better.” Such has been my internal dialogue when it comes to the following video tour of my cabin on Holland America’s ms Zuiderdam.

This is not the polished, professional quality cruise vlog that will finally revive my flailing youtube channel .  No, this is a grainy Prof. Cruise wearing a free t-shirt that shrunk 3 sizes the first time she washed it, recording on the cheapest phone available with her $35 a month Republic Wireless plan, touring a cabin where underwear hanging on the shower clothesline is the least offensive thing you’ll see.

I use the 3 rd person as I cling to the delusion that I’m not the one who produced and published the cruise vlog equivalent of that time my dog ate and then barfed up an entire bag of Trader Joe’s Thai Lime and Chili Cashews: I mean there were tons of whole, undigested nuts in there, but no amount of rinsing would make them palatable.

So with that ringing endorsement, here’s a video tour of cabin 8130 on ms Zuiderdam, an inside cabin located on deck 8 aft.  Survive (I’d say enjoy, but, well…)!

Don’t send me your therapy bill if you actually watched that thing – I tried to warn you! Moving on with sincere apologies…

A Tour of a Horizontal Facing Inside Cabin on ms Zuiderdam

A Zuiderdam deck plan with arrows pointing to two horizontal facing inside cabins.

Some of you may be booked or considering one of the horizontal facing inside cabins on ms Zuiderdam or one of the other Vista-class ships on Holland America (ms Oosterdam, ms Westerdam, and ms Noordam).  These cabins include numbers:

4011, 4012, 4017, 4018, 4023, 4024, 4029, 4030, 4147, 4148, 4153, 4154, 4157, 4158, 4165, 4168, 4171, 5005, 5008, 5010, 5011, 5017, 5018, 5022, 5023, 5029, 5030, 5034, 5155, 5156, 5161, 5164, 5165, 5166, 6001, 6002, 6007, 6010, 6014, 6015, 6021, 6022, 6027, 6028, 6034, 8118, 8125

Mr. Cruise was booked in one of these (8118), so I captured a quick video so you could see how it’s different (all the details are the same, it’s just a slightly different layout).  I should have had you watch this one first to lure you into a sense of normality.

Inside Cabins on ms Zuiderdam: The Basics

Here’s how the bed in cabin 8130 looked before a ragtag troupe of monkeys celebrated getting fired from the circus in there:

A photo of the bed in an inside cabin on ms Zuiderdam in 2022.

And here’s how the desk area looked:

The desk area in an inside cabin aboard Holland America's ms Zuiderdam in 2022.

And the restroom:

The sink area in an inside cabin aboard Holland America's ms Zuiderdam in 2022.

The following items and documents were present when we arrived in our stateroom for the first time:

This reusable bag:

Which I took home loaded up with all the extra Kleenex and toilet paper (true story).

These items on the desk (with more detailed photos and descriptions to follow):

A desk with many items on it onboard the Zuierdam.

Two complimentary mariner cocktails courtesy of the Mariner Society (Holland America’s loyalty program).

The “cocktail” turned out to be sparkling wine. I scored all of the coupons in both our rooms since mom and my son don’t drink and Mr. Cruise bought a drink package. I saved them all up for New Year’s Eve in the dining room and performed auld lang syne in burps (a very effective strategy to encourage social distancing).

Two cards that read: "Mariner cocktail."

Information about Covid and the Navigator App

Good luck, little app, the average age on the Zuiderdam was 100 and that’s only because of my 8 year-old. When he turned 9 onboard, the average increased to 101.

Three paper documents on a desk onboard the Zuiderdam in 2022.

A pile of paper masks

Which I started to work my way through until the Captain announced our ship had positive Covid cases among both crew and passengers and I witnessed hazmat-suited crew members outside the doors of three of my neighbors on deck 8. Then I switched to KN95’s that I decorated to read: Do not enter unless you’re 40,000 daily calories worth of cruise food. Mom wished I’d also allowed a toothbrush in.

Beverages and price list

At least if you get quarantined to your stateroom, you’ll have a nice selection of overpriced beverages (click HERE to see what quarantined passengers ate on our ship).

An ice bucket and three drink bottles on a desk in an inside cabin on the Zuiderdam.

A luggage mat, reminder, daily schedule, and service card

An orange card, a long schedule of activities, and a door hanging card that reads: At your service.

The luggage mat will serve as a final resting place for the bed bugs who hitched a ride from your pre-cruise budget motel and decided to kill themselves upon discovering they were on a cruise ship during a Covid wave: “What have I done? I’d rather live out eternity in the stomach of a roach!”

The tiny orange card is a time-change reminder. Sadly, it didn’t prevent me from showing up to my excursion an hour early demanding a refund: “It’s 6am, Karen.”

Clearly HAL understands their demographic as paper schedules were still provided on the bed each evening in addition to being available on the Navigator App. Otherwise every Guest Services crew member would fake Covid to avoid yelling this 5,000 times a day: “FIRST YOU HAVE TO TURN ON YOUR PHONE, SIR!”

A card that read: "At your service."

If you’re sharing a room with your husband for the first time since your honeymoon (43 years ago) because the sounds he makes at night are akin to wild boars during mating season, you’ll want to use this card to request the bed be separated. Also ask for some extra pillows to throw at him or to low-key suffocate him with if it comes to that: “Sorry Fred, but the neighbors rang to ask if an exorcism was being performed in here.”

Things I Loved About my Inside Cabin on ms Zuiderdam

While I’d been spoiled with cheap upgrades to spacious balcony cabins on my prior two cruises and enjoyed the more contemporary decor of the newer NCL and Royal Caribbean ships, there were quite a few things I loved about this scrappy little (and I do mean little) inside cabin on ms Zuiderdam.

Comfortable bedding

A bed onboard the Zuiderdam in 2022.

I used to think cruise lines made the beds so comfortable so you’d stay in them all day ordering expensive room service and pay-per-view movies. But Holland America blew my theory with their free room service and nice selection of complimentary on-demand flicks. It’s possible I never would have left my stateroom on the Zuiderdam if I didn’t have a kid in a cabin down the hall who expected me to spend Christmas, his birthday, and New Year’s with him (kids are so demanding).

But let me tell you, once mom and I had the bed separated and she stopped practicing for her black belt in karate on me in her sleep, the mattress, comforter, and pillows made for a blissful night’s rest. I woke energized and ready for a marathon (of eating).

Locking nightstands

Two nightstands with locks in an inside room on the Zuiderdam.

You’ll note that I never provide a photo of the two chocolates we received from our room steward each evening. That’s because I don’t want mom to know I grabbed them up and locked them in my nightstand before she saw them and ate all 20 on my flight home to Seattle.

Clothesline

A blue workout top hanging on a clothesline in the shower on the Zuiderdam.

Every morning on the Zuiderdam I visited the gym where I slowly pedaled the equivalent of a city block on an exercise bike while binging Netflix downloads on my iPad. Then I wet down my workout clothes and hung them on the clothesline so mom would keep encouraging me to eat a second and third dessert, “you worked up a real sweat at the gym this morning honey, you definitely earned that bread pudding!”

Some shorts and a shirt hanging on two hooks.

I loved all the little hooks all over that meant I never had to actually put anything away. If it’s hung up, it technically doesn’t count as clutter, right? Although if you want to know the truth, we had so much clutter that we ran out of room for more clutter and had to start hanging things on those hooks or risk spilling out into the hallway.

Medicine Cabinet

A mirrored medicine cabinet on the Zuiderdam in 2022.

I loved this medicine cabinet with a closing door. That way I could hide my 12 tubes of sunscreen and act like I’d been in the Mexican sun before without a losing six layers of skin even after clearing the shelves at Walgreens of Aloe Vera (you may recall the great Aloe Vera shortage of 2016 when I first visited Mexico on a cruise).

Two Holland America robes sitting on a bed.

These robes are almost nice enough to pass as “gala attire” (which is still a thing on Holland America). I say “almost” because Mr. Cruise forgot to wear pants under his (pants are required for men on gala night). I paired mine with my dressiest Crocs and sailed right past the podium though. (I’m serious about the Crocs – they’re one of my favorite cruise hacks.)

Two USB outlets with items plugged in.

The nice thing about rooming with mom is that she never hogs the outlets. She turned off her phone as we embarked the Zuiderdam and didn’t power it back on until we arrived back in San Diego 10 nights later at which point she opened her e-mail to learn that her flight home had been cancelled and she couldn’t get on another one for at least 2 days. At that point she hastily hugged us goodbye, “toodaloo, suckers!” and sprinted to the Zuiderdam check-in desk to book herself on a back-to-back!

That’s actually not what she did at all – that’s what I’d have done. Instead, she took a shuttle to the hotel Mr. Cruise booked for her with a view of the cruise terminal, didn’t even take a single photo of the cruise ships because she doesn’t really know how to use her camera phone, enjoyed a few extra days exploring around San Diego, and flew home two days later. Clearly mom isn’t addicted to cruising OR technology like her spawn (does 23andMe provide information on where one’s cruising gene comes from?).

But mom’s always up for a cruise, even if it isn’t her first love (sorry, Mr. Cruise) and I never have to share any outlets with her! So I had the four USB and two 3-pronged outlets all to myself on the Zuiderdam!

Bath products

Elemis bath products

I’m not picky about bath products, I just bum some Head and Shoulders off Mr. Cruise at home and tamp down the frizzies with a baseball cap. But this “Elemis” stuff had me feeling like I should find out what the hell a “blowout” is. I mean, why not go all the way? Next time I’ll know to bring along one of those fake shampoo bottles people use to smuggle booze onto cruise ships. The kind folks at security (who saved the day when I needed to sneak a skateboard onboard – read about that saga HERE ) will be confused as to why I’m smuggling on air though.

holland america cruise ship rooms

You can’t call yourself a cruise lover unless you know at least one person who’s died at the cord of one of those horrible too-short cruise ship hair dryers that permanently attach to the wall. Or if you haven’t sought expensive treatment at the ship’s medical center for carpal tunnel syndrome after having held that darn button down. And then you fall into a rabbit hole of conspiracy theories, “but that one about the cruise lines making money off the hair dryers is TOTALLY true!”

Bonafide cruise lovers will appreciate the hair dryers on the Zuiderdam. They plug into (and more importantly out of) the wall AND have a switch that keeps them on. Maybe you’ll actually go for a dip in the hot tub this time without sporting a shower cap, “Yes, I KNOW this looks ridiculous Fred, but I can’t risk it. Now pass me that bleach shot so I don’t get Covid.”

A hair dryer.

Things I Didn’t Love About my Inside Cabin on ms Zuiderdam

Confusing switches.

A black outlet with what looks like 3 switches.

Have you heard that joke about psychologists and light bulbs? Well it turns out that pursuing an education in cruising through a mediocre, b-list blog will prove infinitely more useful than a Ph.D. in psychology earned through an accredited institution of higher learning. Because I’m here to tell you something that 9+ years of post high-school education did not prepare me for: how to operate the light switches on the Zuiderdam. Here’s the thing. The whole panel is black and it looks like there are three switches, but there are really only two. And after 10 days of constantly pushing on the middle part with no resulting illumination as my patience and self confidence continued to deteriorate, I decided that if I were to ever sail on the Zuiderdam again, I’d slap a little sticker on that middle part reminding me not to press on it. Something really dramatic like this :

holland america cruise ship rooms

I’d also use this thing near the door:

A panel with a switch.

as another hook instead of wasting the time it would have taken me to order, watch them be prepared, and eat 15 buffet crepes (that’s pretty much how I measure everything now) trying to figure out what it did.

I thought it might have something to do with the motion sensor-activated light that came on near the bathroom or the small lights under the closets that stayed on all the time (meaning the cabin never got totally dark, which I also didn’t love), but turning the switch to “off” didn’t affect either of those things.

Mini-fridge

A mini fridge stocked with beverages.

And I do mean “mini.” Even if you have your room steward empty it of overpriced convenience beverages, the fridge is too shallow to use for the only thing worth having a mini-fridge for: squelching late-night dessert cravings! Seriously, even the smallest plates and blows from the buffet won’t fit in there and I got charged for a Coke because some filling from an unprotected cream puff contaminated it.

Placement of the trash can

A trash can under a desk on the Zuiderdam.

You can probably relate to this one as you’re thinking, “this review is trash” and looking around for the can (you just press the little x at the top of your screen).

The trash can was situated all the way under the desk, completely unaccessible behind the heavy desk chair. Every time I moved it to another spot in the room, my room steward would move it back. I blame him for the untidy condition of our room (actually, if it weren’t for him we probably would have received a visit from one of the hazmat-suited crew members, having nothing to do with Covid).

Cloth shower curtain

The cloth shower curtain in the bathroom was so evil that I didn’t take a photo of it for fear that it would melt my phone (actually it features in that horrible video from earlier if you must see it, I just forgot to snap a still shot). Seriously though, under normal circumstances you’ll get some water leaking out from under the cloth shower curtain onto the floor, so make sure you pick up items you don’t want to get wet. And if you’re ever innocently rinsing out some shorts when you lose control of the removable shower head, that shower curtain will absolutely NOT keep you afloat like Rose on that door. No, you’ll sink with Jack and the Titanic. Seriously, there was so much water sprayed around the bathroom, with that curtain doing nothing to contain it, that I thought the Zuiderdam sinking as a result might be just the thing to make cruising feel safe again (I mean it would shift attention away from Covid, right?).

No wraparound aft balcony

A large wraparound aft balcony.

I booked this cabin as a “guarantee” meaning I didn’t get to chose my specific location. So I was thrilled when I was assigned 8130, located all the way aft. When I think “aft cabin,” I think of one of those awesome (sometimes wraparound) aft balconies everyone’s always trying to score. So I was pretty disappointed when I discovered this behind the curtains in my stateroom:

A blank wall.

I only included that last one about the balcony, so this one would seem reasonable by comparison.

My favorite feature of my balcony cabin on the Eurodam was the bathtub! And as I peaked into propped-open oceanview and balcony staterooms on the Zuiderdam (who agrees that the only reason to take your kids trick-or-treating is so you can see what your neighbors’ digs look like inside?), they all had them too.

I really missed the bathtub in this inside cabin. Did I pay for it? No. Did I still want it? Yes.

A tulip painting next to a bed in an inside cabin on the Zuiderdam.

Despite the two tulip paintings on the walls (that only served to remind me that I’ve never taken my kid to our local tulip festival to photograph him frolicking to post on Instagram to level-up my parenting cred), I found the decor in our cabin drab and dated. Now before you have the chance to say, “it takes one to know one, ” I shall declare…

We are booking an Alaskan cruise for 2021 for two adults and two kids (8 and 10), using two/connected staterooms, and wanted to ask how the HAL ships in Alaska (Koningsdam,  Oosterdam, Volendam, Eurodam) set up connecting rooms.  I

Does anyone know how these HAL ships set up connecting rooms?  Is it only removing the balcony divider?  Is it by an interior door between the two rooms like you might see in a hotel?  It is by a custom/shared entryway like Celebrity S-Class ships?

Interested in your thoughts on all of these ships - though I'll confess that Koningsdam is probably our preferred ship.

There is an inside connecting door between the cabins on the older ships, not sure about Koningsdam, but it should probably be the same. For information and pictures about HAL staterooms, see xxxfacts online. The xxx is "hal", we're not supposed to show the link here.

Yes, there are doors within connecting staterooms. The most outward section of the balcony dividers can be opened between any adjacent balconies - just ask your steward.

When I was on the Koningsdam we happened to be in a connecting room.  There was a door in the wall next to the desk.

Where the door is within the room will vary depending on class of ship, and cabin category within that ship.  Some cabins lose a closet to allow space for the door, while others have in in what otherwise would be a blank wall.  On the Vista and Signature class ships, some inside cabins on Main Deck have the beds turned 90º to have the door on the side, at the foot of the bed.  I'm been in many connecting cabins over the years, and only once heard noise from the other cabin. The woman was having a major outburst with lots of shouting. People going by in the passageway would have heard it, too.  There are two doors---one for each cabin. If one cabin opens the door, they can't go anywhere unless the other cabin also opens their door.

Great - thank you all!  My (discount) TA was unsure if they just removed the divider (doesn't work) or had an interior door (will work).  It sounds like connecting cabins in HAL have the interior door feature.

Time to book :)

10,000+ Club

I thought the definition of a connecting room would be that there is a door inside between the cabins. Never thought of any other definition.

rafinmd

I don't know if this is true on any existing HAL ship (it used to be on the Prinsendam) some connecting cabins are served by a little alcove in the hallway with individual doors on the sides for each cabin and a third door at the corridor so the 2 individual cabin doors can be left open but the combined cabins secured by that third door.

On the 3 newer ships, besides the interior connecting doors, a small section of the balcony dividers can be opened , not removed .

That's how it is on Celebrity Solstice Class.  It makes it so any set of rooms could be made into connecting rooms.  It seems like a decent idea but the drawback comes if you get stuck next to a door slammer, or otherwise loud neighbor who congregates outside their door.
