Where to go
The eternal city and the beating heart of Italy. Unmatched heritage, charming architecture with many chic, hidden romantic cafes and bars for sundowners.
Possibly Italy’s most romantic city; winding canals run under tiny curved bridges with elegant architecture at every turn.
Surrounded by rolling Tuscan hills, the beautiful city of Florence is one of Europe’s most enchanting and historically influential cities.
Sardinia has its own unique identity, and its inhabitants are fiercely proud of their island which is as intriguing as it is beautiful.
Beautiful Tuscany is bursting with gorgeous landscapes and culinary culture - the place to relax under shady olive trees and share great wine and food.
Full on glamour awaits on a coastline draped in colourful buildings that dramatically rise out of the azure blue waters below.
Sicily has long been a melting pot of Mediterranean culture, a ruggedly beautiful island surrounded by sparkling seas.
Naturally beautiful and adopted by the glitterati as a retreat from the city. Glistening lakes and tiny towns crammed with chic boutiques and bustling cafes can be explored on romantic boat trips.
Puglia feels very different to the rest of the country and is the perfect place for those looking to relax on beaches, enjoy delicious food and wine and explore charming towns and villages.
Matera is the jewel in Basilicata’s crown, a jumble of houses and churches perched on a plateau with deep canyons either side.
This is the island that charmed Roman Emperors, Hollywood darlings and now frequented by an international jet set looking to soak up Italy’s intrinsic romance and glamour.
Milan is Italy’s financial and industrial heart, a thoroughly modern European city with a great history not far under the surface.
Nestled in the north west of the country and fringed by the French and Swiss Alps, Piedmont is one of Italy‘s most naturally beautiful regions. Perfect for hikes and those who want to share experiences in the great outdoors.
Portofino and Cinque Terre
Portofino, perched on its own peninsula, is Liguria’s glamorous heart and one of the most picture-perfect fishing ports in the Mediterranean.
Emilia Romagna
Home to pretty coastal towns, elegant cities and is considered by many to be the country’s foodie capital. Gourmet restaurants and fantastic culinary excursions can be enjoyed here.
In the historical centre, modestly grand piazzas and a maze of streets are dotted with quietly humming cafes, artisan shops and high couture boutiques.
The Dolomites and the Alps
Soaring peaks, tooth-like crags and lush verdant slopes, the Dolomites are some of Italy’s most dramatic scenery. A place of adventure and peaceful relaxation in nature.

When to visit
Italy is a year-round destination. Summers can get very hot and crowds do swell, so spring and early autumn are great times to visit. The sun is still shining and it is much more pleasant to explore the cities once the intense summer heat has subsided.

They are extremely familiar with tours, guides, hotels, best travel spots, trains, etc…. All guides showed up on time and had a very warm, knowledgeable personality. So much so, we asked for the same guide again on our 2nd trip!!!!

It is easily one of the best places in the world to go on a honeymoon. You can easily get from city to city allowing you to see several regions and cities in a short amount of time. With so many gorgeous places to visit, I asked travel bloggers to recommend their top places to honeymoon in Italy.
Italy Honeymoon Destinations
Medieval cities, gently rolling hills, natural hot springs, the birthplace of the Renaissance, and one of the most iconic wine regions in the world: welcome to Tuscany, where the food tastes better, the views have a soft glow, and the very air you breathe seems more romantic than it does elsewhere.

Be sure to set aside at least one night for an incredibly delicious, gut-busting meal, one day for a wine tasting, and one day of doing nothing but exploring independently.

Cinque Terre
Cinque Terre is one of the most picturesque places in Italy and the five villages of Monterosso, Corniglia, Vernazza, Manarola, and Riomaggiore have something for everyone. For the honeymooners, there are plenty of charming apartments and houses with scenic views to rent. And no matter if you prefer a calm or adventurous honeymoon, Cinque Terre has several options.
It’s perhaps known best for its hiking as well as the colorful old villages, but there are also many superb restaurants serving that delicious Italian food while sipping on some red wine or aperol spritz. Cinque Terre is very Beautiful, and honeymooners can expect many romantic moments here, especially if you’ll be traveling during the shoulder seasons.
One restaurant that shouldn’t be missed is the one called Nessun Dorma Cinque Terre. It’s located on top of a hill in Manarola, with a gorgeous view over one of Italy’s most photographed places. Indulge in some delicious homemade bruschettas and order Aperol Spritz for drinks to celebrate!
If you’re staying for a week or longer, it’s also easy to combine Cinque Terre with a visit to Florence, Pisa, and Tuscany. The train Connections are well established to other cities.
To and from each village, you can either hike or hop on the train that only takes about 2-5 minutes between each village. A single ride cost 4 Euro, but you can also purchase a train card if you want unlimited travels.

Rome is the perfect honeymoon destination; there are so many romantic things to do. Start by wandering through the many incredible museums together. Foodies can’t miss having pizza and a glass of wine in the Capitoline Museums’ rooftop terrace restaurant. The views over Rome’s skyline, with the domes of churches poking above the other buildings, is incredibly romantic. Admire more views of Rome from the roof of the Vatican. Walk inside the dome of Saint Peter Cathedral then climb the stairs to the roof where there are 360° views of the Vatican and Rome from the cupola at the top. Then go to the front and stand behind the huge statues at the front of the cathedral and join them gazing over Rome.
Explore the ruins at the forum, and, if you’re a cat lover, visit the Torre Argentina cat Sanctuary, where 150 cats live safely among the ruins of ancient Roman temples. In the evening, share romantic al fresco dinners in Campo de Fiori. The nearby Hotel Raphael – Relais & Châteaux is a perfect choice for a honeymoon. Finally, take a pasta making class together on a rooftop terrace so you can share many more romantic Italian meals and memories throughout your life together.

One of the most beautiful places in Italy has to be the island of Capri . The main town of Capri is a spectacular honeymoon destination and with good reason. Once a favored destination of jet-setters, Capri has a romantic vibe for those wanting a never-to-be-forgotten honeymoon. Luxury resorts and chic accommodations with spectacular views, infinity pools, and full-service spas are perfect for that romantic getaway. One of our favorites is Hotel La Minerva for a romantic honeymoon or anniversary stays.
You can wander by day through narrow streets visiting shops and cafes or pack a picnic lunch and hike to the Roman ruins of Villa Jovis, home to former Emperors Tiberius and Caligula. Swimming, bicycling, or shopping is a great way to fill your days. Capri is a mecca for lovers of high-end designer Italian brands, and a boat ride to the famous Blue Grotto for an amazing underwater light display is a must. There are so many good restaurants for intimate late night (this is Italy, after all) dinners. But nothing is more romantic or magical than strolling the quiet lanes and streets at night to the soft sounds of the sea.

In our opinion, perfect Honeymoon destinations combine romance, relaxation, and beauty. Sicily has got it all, plus an opportunity to avoid the tourist crowds and enjoy a slower paced holiday. There is so much to do in Sicily , the Italian island is steeped in art and history, stunning landscapes with breathtaking views and some of the most amazing food you’ll ever taste.
The capital, Palermo, with its labyrinth of rustics streets, is the perfect setting for hand-in-hand strolls before enjoying a cool glass of Sicilian wine at one of the many sea-front restaurants. If you really want to up the romance factor, take a sunset cruise on a Sicilian fishing boat and watch as this portside city is bathed in gold.
If you want something a little less touristy, then the coastal towns of Catania and Syracuse are perfect and equally charming. You can divide your honeymoon days sightseeing ancient ruins, lazing on beautiful Mediterranean beaches or touring the countryside visiting vineyards, olive groves, and citrus orchards. The more adventurous couple can even go hiking on Mt Etna, Italy’s most active volcano.
Then, as the sun goes down, enjoy romantic evenings feasting on amazing seafood and soaking up the sights, sounds and smells of Sicilian life. A honeymoon in Sicily is a sensory memory to last a lifetime!

Venice is the iconic city on water and a beautiful place that oozes romance on every corner. Italians do romance well, and there’s no setting more perfect for a honeymoon in Italy, than Venice. Wander with your partner down the waterways and cobblestone streets and discover quaint and hidden Italian restaurants. Dine over pasta and fine Italian wine at Piazza San Marco with live music, then finish your evening off with a walk along the Grand Canal with a gelato in hand.
Venice is filled with romantic things to do, and the highlight is enjoying a romantic Gondola ride for two. If you can, I recommend splash out for a private one (it is your honeymoon after all!). Venice also has some beautiful authentic Italian designed properties for you and your loved one to stay in. Picture waking up to canal views right on your doorstep. Oh and don’t forget to visit the islands of Murano and Burano to find unique souvenirs for each other. A honeymoon to Venice will truly make you fall in love even deeper than before.

Naples is probably not the first place that springs to mind when you think ‘romantic honeymoon destination’, but you’d be surprised. Behind a rough facade hides one of the most amazing cities in Italy. As one of the oldest cities in the world, it is incredibly rich in history and walking through the streets almost feels as if you’re being transported back in time. It is also home to some of the best museums Italy, including the Archaeological Museum which houses some of the finest artifacts from Pompeii. Speaking of Pompeii, the archaeological parks of Pompeii and Herculaneum are only a short train ride away.
Apart from that, Naples is also the perfect destination for foodies. As the birthplace of pizza, you could have a pie for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and still only scratch the surface of what the culinary scene has to offer. And what could be more romantic than a good pizza, a bottle of wine, and a view over Mt. Vesuvius at sunset?

If you are seeking romance, beauty, and serenity for a honeymoon then Bellagio, Italy could be your perfect destination. Bellagio is located just north of Milan between the two branches where Lake Como comes together. Easily accessible by car, train and/or ferry.
Bellagio gives way to stunning lake and mountain views from all directions. Known as the “Pearl of the Lake” this charming little city transports you back in time with its cobblestone streets and unique and tiny artistic shops. Walking Bellagio is full of discovery, from mystery looking pathways and gardens to old churches and fountains. Enjoy Lake Como by taking a ferry and stopping at all the little towns around this area of the lake. Each distinctive town has something different to offer.
To make your honeymoon even more special staying at The Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni is a must. Enjoy the luxury of one of Italy’s most famous hotels while being totally pampered. Have an unsurpassed romantic dinner and enjoy the lounge before and after your meal with a violin, cello and piano concert.
In the evening take a walk along the lake, bring a bottle of champagne along because Bellagio sunsets are extraordinary. Toast to celebrate your future as husband and wife.

Ravello is the perfect town in Italy for a honeymooning couple in love. It’s a little town overlooking the Mediterranean, positioned in the mountains above the Amalfi coast. Its famous for ancient restored sprawling villas, music festivals, gardens and food. We visited Ravello in early April when the weather was perfect with clear blue skies and cool sunny days.
Ravello offers picture perfect gorgeous views, of turquoise blue waters of the Mediterranean. It’s location high up in the mountains further up from the busy beach towns of Amalfi and Atrani, make it more pretty and slightly less crowded. We arrived there by local bus from Amalfi. On the way back we walked all the way down, through unbelievable views, lemon orchards, olive groves and a maybe a couple thousand stairs.
I recommend a visit to Villa Rufolo, one of the famous villas in Ravello. It hosts patrons of music, arts, gardens, food, and photography. It has beautiful buildings, a museum, a tower and gardens from the 13th century that were remodeled in the 19th century, making it popular for visitors around the world. It’s perfectly manicured gardens overlooking the blue waters make an awesome backdrop for romantic photographs. If you’re able to visit during an outdoor concert, with a backdrop of the Mediterranean down below, I would love to hear all about your experience. I’ve often wondered what’s it’s like to listen to a wonderful concert in this setting.
Jyoti and Nirmal – Story At Every Corner
Perched atop a forested hill, Assisi’s views are sweeping ones out over the green, rolling hills of Umbria. You won’t find a more quintessential Italian hill town—full of maze-like cobblestone streets, windows spilling over with flowers, sweeping cathedrals, and a hilltop castle overlooking the rolling countryside.
Rent an apartment overlooking the main square, get lost in the warren of cobbled alleyways, and take a leisurely hike down the hill (on the trail that starts just beside the Basilica of Saint Francis) to an old nunnery that now operates as a hyper-local shop where you can buy souvenirs and local food products. For meals, make reservations at Osteria Piazzetta delle Erbe —a charming osteria full of gourmet treats at reasonable prices. And before you head home, stop by Cacio Pepe—a meat and food shop where you’ll find some of the best homemade jams in all of Europe.

On the banks of the magnificent lake of the same name, Como is a city that quickly wins you over with its considerable charm. Here snow-capped mountains soar in the background, classic wooden speed boats zip across the shimmering waters and elegant villas line the lake shores. Como is the perfect place to honeymoon with Northern European panache.
The place to stay is Villa D’Este, built in the 16th century as the summer house of Princess Caroline of Brunswick. Villa D’Este is only a few moments from the center of Como and has all the grandeur you would expect of a former royal residence. Guest rooms are decorated with antiques and silk furnishings and overlook manicured gardens and the lake. Hotel amenities include world-class restaurants, a luxury day spa, and a floating swimming pool.
If you can bear to leave the hotel, rent a private boat to take you to some of the picturesque towns on the lake. From Varenna, there are several hikes renowned for the spectacular views along the way. Bellagio is the place to sip champagne and watch the sunset before returning to luxurious Villa D’Este.
Katy Clarke – Untold Morsels
Levanto is one of the more understated towns along the Italian Riviera which runs from Genoa to Pisa. Located just north of the Cinque Terra yet with a locals vibe. The village laneways house cafes, bookstores and gelato stands which all lead down to an impressive beach. At night, alfresco dining tables litter the streets and the sounds of talented buskers echo off the ancient sandstone walls. Plus it has the best sliced pizza I have ever eaten, seriously!
Levanto also has a unique cycling route . Unused rail tunnels have since been converted into a 14km return cycling and jogging track that weaves along the coastline. The brilliant blue of the Mediterranean is revealed at many points along the route where the paved trail emerges from the flood-lit tunnels. There are even spots to access small and secluded beaches for a swim.
A regular ferry runs from Levanto to the Cinque Terra and Portoverne, so Levanto is a great base to check out these tourist drawcards with the option to retreat to a more relaxed place for the evening.

Cagliari, Sardinia
Many foreigners decide to celebrate their wedding in Italy and even more decide to spend their honeymoon there, but very few ever make it to Cagliari, the beautiful capital of Sardinia. Between the countryside, the mountains and the Mediterranean sea, Cagliari is in a fantastic location that allows easy access to the most gorgeous beaches in Sardinia and even to some incredible hiking trails. There are many things to do in Cagliari . Honeymooners will be particularly interested in romantic activities, so I suggest to head to Via Santa Croce in Castello to enjoy a sunset drink. It’s one of the best sunset you will ever see in your life. Make sure to go for a walk in the historical center – the area of Castello and Villanova are colorful and charming. The best archeological site in town is the Roman amphitheater and you can also visit the Museum of Archeology, which has a great exhibit.
The city is packed with good restaurants. The best gourmet one is Josto, and the nicest pizza is at Framento. Make sure to make reservations as they are both very popular. For a good gelato, go to Cremoso. The best cocktails are at Libarium Nostrum in via Santa Croce. Villa Fanny is a lovely boutique hotel nicely located minutes walk from the main center of town.
Lecce is a beautiful city in the southern region of Puglia. It has been dubbed “the Florence of the south”. While its architecture is quite different from that of Florence, it is no less astonishing. And yet, Lecce remains a hidden gem and sees just a tiny fraction of the number of visitors who swarm the streets of Florence.
Many of the building are built in a distinctive reinvention of the Baroque style that is known as barocco leccese (Lecce baroque). Some of the best examples of this flamboyant architectural style include the Cathedral and the Holy Cross Church.
You’ll notice that all the buildings take on a unique yellow hue. This is the natural color of the local limestone, sometimes called “Lecce stone”.
There’s also an impressive ancient Roman amphitheater right in the center of the main square. It’s still used today as a venue for events and performances.
Lecce and the rest of Puglia also have their own distinctive cuisine, so it’s a great place to taste lesser-known Italian dishes that you’ve probably never heard of before .

Lerici might not be the most obvious choice for a honeymoon in Italy, but it’s the perfect destination to relax after the big day. It’s home to some beautiful beaches, in particular the secluded cove of Fiascherino with a stunning waterfront restaurant for a romantic lunch. It’s part of the Liguria region, which includes the colorful Cinque Terre National Park as well as the beautiful town of Tellaro, so there are plenty of things to do in Lerici . One of the most romantic ways to spend you honeymoon is to take a boat trip to the island of Palmaria for dinner at Locanda Lorena – an incredible seafood restaurant with stunning views of Portovenere opposite. The perfect place to watch the sun go down with a bottle of wine, and the regions speciality dish – Muscoli Ripieni alla Spezzina – mussels stuffed with garlic, milk-drenched breadcrumbs, Parmesan, tomato, eggs and mortadella.

For those who love cultural destinations filled with history, architectural wonders and great museums, Padua (Padova in Italian) is a perfect honeymoon destination. Unjustly underrated in the shadow of Venice, Padua – this lovely town in the North of Italy – receives much less attention from travelers than it should deserve. Since the Middle Ages, it has been one of the main cultural and religious centers of Italy, being home to one of Europe’s most prestigious universities. Nevertheless, the main highlight of Padua is its basilica dedicated to Saint Anthony, one of the most loved saints in the Christian religion.
Your trip to Padua, therefore, should include a visit to the Basilica of Saint Anthony of Padua, where the rests of the saint are also conserved. If you love astonishing Renaissance frescos, the Scrovegni Chapel will amaze you with its paintings from one of the greatest masters, Giotto. There are several other lovely churches and interesting museums, but Padua has also a great place for a romantic stroll. Cute little squares, cobbled streets and one of the largest squares in Europa, el Prato del Valle decorated with lovely canals and statues Another way of enjoying this glamorous atmosphere is to hang out in some of the old coffee places, such as Café Pedrocchi. And of course, if you are on your honeymoon, you can always check outother lovely cities in the Veneto Region that are found nearby: Venice, Verona, Chioggia and many others are easily accessible from Padua on a day-trip. A great place to stay in Padua to enjoy its historic ambience is the Hotel Majestic Toscanelli.

If you’re looking for a romantic city to visit on honeymoon, you needn’t look much further than the setting for Romeo and Juliet – Verona. The beautiful medieval city would be worth a trip in itself with its gorgeous squares, perfect for whiling away the hours over a glass or two of local wine. But for most couples, the attraction of Verona is the connection to Shakespeare’s ultimate star-crossed lovers. You can visit a museum devoted to their story at Casa di Giulietta, stand on the balcony, and touch a statue of Juliet for good luck. You can even leave your own message of love on the walls which lead to Juliet’s house.
For the ultimate honeymoon in Verona, visit between June and September, when the huge Roman Arena hosts open-air opera performances. The summer months are also the perfect time to combine your stay in Verona with a trip to nearby Lake Garda , where some of the most romantic villages in Italy hugs the shore of the beautiful lake, against a stunning mountain backdrop.

The very thought of Honeymoon in Italy can be magical. Though Venice, Tuscany are most sought after destinations for Honeymoon, couples often shun Milan, which is the fashion and business capital. Though Milan may not have as many ancient sights as Rome, this home of Prada, Armani, is quite rich in heritage and has a glorious past as well.
A serene morning visit at the Milan Cathedral (Duomo di Milano) will leave you spellbound. Visit the exclusive terrace of Cathedral to get fascinated with the magnificent view of the city and the snow covered alps. The 14 ft Maddonnina atop Cathedral will leave you stunned.
Opt for some photoshoot at the Piazza and then stroll around in one of the oldest Shopping mall, Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, very close to the Cathedral. The blue glass vaulted ceilings and mosaic flooring will leave you to feel more loved.
How about visiting the mural of the Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci? You’ll appreciate the architecture at The Church of Santa Maria Delle Grazie. It also made to the list of UNESCO World Heritage site. The Last Supper is the only kind of its Fresco seen today, appreciate its beauty with your love.
And not to miss, feel the paradise at Lake Como. Its picturesque villages, fishing hamlets will leave you enchanted on your honeymoon. A feeling of true love!
Your stay at Armani Hotel Milano will make your Honeymoon all the more special in this glamorous city. They also have Honeymoon packages, which are worth every penny.

If you are planning a honeymoon in Italy, consider Siena, a stunning hill town in Tuscany. Siena is charming and medieval, and when you arrive, you’ll feel like you have been transported back to the 15th or 16th century. But if you are looking to splurge on your honeymoon, Siena boasts luxurious places to stay: think palaces with frescoed ceilings and fabulous furnishings and great places to sample local cuisine and wines.
While there are lots of things to do in Siena , you can choose to do as much or as little as you want, and still have a memorable honeymoon. Stroll the lovely streets and admire the palazzos on either side. Browse the little shops for tasty treats to enjoy. Sample the luscious gelato you’ll find at little local gelaterias. If you love art and architecture, visit the spectacular Duomo di Siena, or some of the other churches in town. For special photo memories, head to the top of the Facciatone at the Duomo complex, or the Torre del Mangia at the Piazza del Campo and take a selfie against the backdrop of Siena’s rooftops and the beautiful surrounding countryside.
From Siena, you have easy access to the Val d’Orcia, with its picture postcard scenery, charming little hill towns, and amazing food and wine. Rent a set of wheels, two or four, and explore the Tuscan countryside. Go for long romantic drives or scooter rides during the day and head back to an intimate gourmet dinner and a comfortable bed in Siena at night.
Siena and the Val d’Orcia are so romantic and so charming that you’ll wish your honeymoon in Italy never ends!

Polignano a Mare, Puglia
Situated on the Adriatic coast of Italy’s heel, Polignano a Mare is a truly romantic destination, perfect for the honeymooning couple. The town is split in two by a deep ancient riverbed. Nowadays the river has dried up, but the clear blue sea still laps at its shores and it’s regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches in Puglia . Spread your towel out here to soak up some sun, or pause for a picnic in this photogenic spot.
The old town, which hangs precariously to the cliff on the southern edge of the beach, is a stunning place to stay, with its cobbled lanes and cozy osterie. Take in the views from the various balconies and gorge on homemade pasta. For a truly memorable experience, you could eat a meal at Grotta Palazzese – a restaurant in a waterside cave. And stay in one of the lovingly restored apartments on the cliff’s edge. It’ll be hard to pull yourself away from the views, but there is plenty to discover within an hour or two drive from Polignano too, such as the old town of Monopoli, the bustling city of Bari, and the impressive Grotte di Castellana.

We worked with Mike to plan our perfect honeymoon in Greece — he was amazing the whole way through and put together a trip we will cherish for our lifetime.
He was thoughtful with our suggestions, and provided some of his own without every pushing us. He stayed within our budgetary means but made it feel like we had a budget twice the size.
Dan and Michelle were such a joy to work with! They really made our trip and cruise successful. Based on our needs they were able to help us identify and schedule what side trips and activities would best suit our interests.

Category: Italy Honeymoon Packages
Considered by many to be the birthplace of romance, the landscape and culture of Italy paints a portrait of pure love and devotion, therefore, Italy is the perfect honeymoon destination. The intoxicating sights, smells, and tastes provided by the country of love cater perfectly to partners who are just beginning their lives together. From the sounds of the smooth water lapping against Venice’s famed canals to the decadent flavor of Italy’s one-of-a-kind cuisine, couples that choose an Italian honeymoon can completely relax into their senses and truly experience their love for one another in a more exciting and present way. Whether for a destination wedding or an unbelievable honeymoon, Italy promises to bring out the amore in everyone.
Native Italians and foreigners alike recognize Italy as one of the most romantic destinations on Earth. This is thanks to the love-focused culture of the Italian people as well as the romantic, sweeping views provided by Italy’s unbeatable landscape. Sit with your lover atop Rome’s famed Spanish steps before tossing coins together in the Trevi Fountain, wishing for a life full of adventures together. Experience Verona, the city that inspired the legendary love story of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet by visiting the Roman Arena, home to many famed Operas. Or have your own movie moment while you and your partner float in a gondola along Venice’s canals, while being serenated by awe-inspiring Italian musicians.
Since every love story is unique, couples can customize their dream Italian honeymoon package by selecting the experiences that would mean the most to them, though one cannot go wrong by choosing any of Italy’s many romantic destinations. Italy promises an unforgettable trip for your unforgettable love.

Italy Honeymoons
Experts in Italian honeymoons
Italy is the romantic capital of the world, with its enchanting cities, breathtaking coasts, dazzling culture and world-class cuisine.
Italy’s cities are rich in art and culture. Rome is brimming with reminders of its empirical past, whilst Venice and Florence are dense with Renaissance art, Milan is renowned as one of Europe’s financial and fashion centres, and the home of Romeo and Juliet - Verona is a romantic gem.
Glorious Lake Garda and Lake Como are famed for their natural beauty and magnificent scenery. The beautiful resort and dramatic bay of Portofino epitomises the glamour of the Ligurian coast in the northwest. Set in the heart of Tuscany’s beautiful landscape is the stunning medieval town of Siena while a pretty town square, a handful of shops, restaurants and two fabulous historic villas form the chic resort of Ravello, perched high above the Amalfi Coast.
For a romantic coastal honeymoon, the heavenly island of Sardinia offers beautiful white beaches and turquoise waters with a backdrop of dramatic mountainous scenery.
Look out for our amazing range of complimentary honeymoon offers, such as room upgrades, candlelit dinners and spa treatments. And don’t forget you can add on authentic experiences to make your stay extra romantic – take a romantic hot-air balloon ride over Tuscany and watch opera under the stars in Verona.
Our Travel Experts can mix and match flights, hotels and experiences to tailor make your perfect Italy honeymoon.

Custom Trip to Italy 2024
Dear Stefania, Our time in Italy was fascinating with your help. We had a great time and were able to enjoy all Italy had to offer with the easy navigation. We are truly spoiled with all the service we had from the tours and drivers you arranged. The chef in Tuscany was so inviting and took such good care of us... We had a great day learning so much, not just about cooking but about the area, the farming and the Italian lifestyle. The boys were just thrilled with the experience. Rome was fascinating with all the history and we absolutely loved the hotel and the rooftop patio. The tours in Rome were so helpful to teach us the history. The travel to Positano was easy as the driver had all the work to do while we enjoyed the views and became familiar with the area. We had great weather and enjoyed the beach, hiking and shopping while we explored the area. Thank you for planning such a great trip. We very much enjoyed our time in Italy and cannot wait to go back. Sincerely, Bob and Evelyn V. Columbus, OH
We've returned, Enrico, and before I get mired in several hundred emails in my inbox, I want to offer my compliments and thanks for what you arranged for us. Castello di Casole was simply lovely -- such a peaceful, relaxing, comfortable place in a delightful setting. The Maalot was a magnificent place. We thought it was perfectly located as well. The staff was friendly and helpful. So thanks for your arrangements and assistance with our questions and preferences. All in all, we view this as having been a really wonderful vacation. Ray C. Arlington, VA
Custom Family Trip to Italy 2023
Buongiorno Enrico, We are now back in Boston recovering from a fabulous trip. I thank you very much for your excellent choices of hotels and sights to visit. Rome: The Golf cart tour was a very big success and given how tired the children were from their day of flying it was a perfect way to spend their first evening. Hotel: This was my favorite. The location and ambience were exactly what I had hoped for. Vatican tour: This was exceptional and our guide for this also joined us the next day for the ruins. Florence: Our day in Tuscany was wonderful. Our driver made arrangements for us to have a lunch at a local winery and it was delightful. This children loved the view and the lunch. Cooking class: The chef was so good with the children. Lou and I watched, this was our choice, we wanted to watch the children cook. We stayed quite late because our host was so interesting and did not rush us at all. The Academia and Pisa were both successful and enjoyed. Venice: Although you could not order us perfect weather. Venice gave us the relief from the heat and we had a very successful walking tour. The hotel was very nice and the location was so easy to locate and enjoyable with the view of the water. It is my hope that we will be able to use your skills again. You were so easy to work with and made this trip stress free for us. Spero che Stephanie continui a sentirsi meglio. Augurandoti una sana e felice estate. Our very best to you and your family, Lou and Dianne B. Boston MA
The Ultimate Italy Honeymoon Itinerary
Looking for a two-week Italy honeymoon itinerary that puts romance at the forefront? From exploring Florence and eating your way around Naples, to gondola rides in Venice and boat trips on Lake Como, this route has it all.
With your wedding drawing closer, it’s time to turn your attention to one of the most exciting parts of getting married: your honeymoon! From road trips through Spain to island hopping in Greece, there are plenty of amazing destinations in Europe to choose from.
But, if you’re considering Italy for your honeymoon, well you’re in for a treat! How about a road trip that includes the Renaissance hub of Florence, ancient monuments in Rome and iconic destinations such as Cinque Terre and the Amalfi Coast?
This ultimate Italy honeymoon itinerary is packed full of luxury hotels, stunning views, and enough delicious food and wine for both of you to have your fill!
As the home of opera, the Colosseum, and pizza (mmmm pizza!!), there are plenty of romantic cities in Italy for you and your new spouse to explore.
Ready to dive in and start planning your dream Italian honeymoon itinerary? Let’s go!
Coming up, I’ll share what I consider to be the best honeymoon destinations in Italy, complete with romantic activities and luxurious places to stay in each one.
If you’re looking for more inspiration, I’ve also written two detailed Italian road trip itineraries – one for Southern Italy , one for Northern Italy . If you already know you’d like to focus on one part of the country and move at a leisurely pace, you might want to use one of these routes to structure your trip.
When thinking about romantic honeymoon destinations in Italy, the Eternal City is definitely up there! Rome is a thriving destination full of history, culture, and beauty. From the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps, to the Colosseum, it’s a city packed full of legendary sights.
Double up your culture fix with a trip to Vatican City, which houses one of the largest collections of art anywhere in the world. Plus, don’t miss a tour of the Sistine Chapel while you’re there!
In terms of living the lavish honeymoon lifestyle, I’d recommend checking into the Anantara Palazzo Naiadi Rome . This world-class hotel is located right in the heart of the action in the Piazza della Repubblica, with a metro station just 100 yards away.
You can finish off your day with a sunset dip in the rooftop pool, before heading out for a feast of pizza and pasta. Don’t forget to leave space for a gelato or two!
Whether you’ve watched season two of The White Lotus and want to live the Sicilian dream, or you just want to eat your body weight in cannolis and arancini, Sicily is up there as one of my favourite regions in Italy.
Carve out time to travel around the east coast of Sicily, including Catania, Mount Etna, and the stunning coastal town of Taormina. Known for its Ancient amphitheatre , Taormina is a town that’s full of beautiful beach resorts , historic buildings, and amazing festivals. It’s the ideal base for a honeymoon in Sicily.
Let’s be honest, no Sicily honeymoon is complete without an epic tour of Mount Etna . With fertile volcanic soil, the banks of this active volcano also provide some of the best vineyards in Italy. What could be more romantic than a vineyard trip surrounded by scenery as picturesque as that?!
For your luxury honeymoon stay, I’d recommend booking a suite at San Domenico Palace in Taormina. Providing panoramic views out across the bay and an opulent infinity pool, is there a better place to sit back and relax after your wedding?
If you’re looking for some more honeymoon hotel options for your time in this region, I’d recommend reading my guide to the best beach resorts in Sicily . There are plenty more hotels as memorable as this one!
Tuscany makes an amazing amazing addition to any honeymoon in Italy. This spectacular region is filled with rolling hills, rustic architecture and warm Italian hospitality. It’s also home to some of the most beautiful towns and villages in the country, including the walled towns of Siena, Lucca, and San Gimignano.
You could spend your honeymoon road tripping around these amazing towns and villages, stopping off at a vineyard or two along the way. Alternatively, you could choose a city break and book a stay in the Renaissance city of Florence.
With the world-class Uzzifi Gallery , the beautiful Boboli Gardens , a top culinary scene, and the iconic Ponte Vecchio, you’ll be spoiled for choice in this Tuscan wonderland.
But, why just go a wine tasting when you could stay in one of Tuscany’s vineyard hotels ? There are dozens dotted all over Tuscany, but one of the best is Borgo Scopeto Relais – a countryside estate surrounded by olive groves and vineyards. It’s the perfect place to relax after a hectic period planning your wedding!
Gondola rides, vibrant piazzas, and picturesque canals… is there a more romantic honeymoon destination than Venice? Of course, a gondola ride on the Grand Canal with your new husband or wife is a must. Time it for sunset and you’re in for a treat!
If you want to double down on the romance, you could also book a day trip to Verona , home of the famous Juliet balcony that inspired Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet .
You could add in a historic tour of Doge’s Palace. With its beautiful views and architecture, it’s a great addition to your honeymoon plan.
For a cosy place to cuddle up after a day of sightseeing, I’d recommend Hotel Metropole Venezia . With its uninterrupted views of the canals, prime location next to Doge’s Palace, and celebrity-level treatment, it just oozes romance.
I’ve always adored my trips to Lake Como. The mountain views, the shimmering blue lake, and the gorgeous lakeside towns offer the perfect escape. I’ve never been with my partner, but I’ve always felt like it’d be a very romantic place to visit! It’s a great destination to add to your Italy honeymoon itinerary.
Honestly, there are so many things to do around Lake Como . From boat trips to Bellagio and amazing food tours, to skiing in the winter months , there’s a lot to love about this place!
For an added bit of romance, how about heading to a lakeside bar at sunset for a glass or two of local wine. Watch as the golden rays turn the lake the most beautiful colour. It’s a pretty perfect way to round off a romantic day in northern Italy!
If you consider yourself a foodie and love modern architecture, there’s no better honeymoon hotel than Il Sereno . With a Michelin-starred restaurant onsite and stunning Art Nouveau rooms, this grand hotel is 100% honeymoon-worthy!
Amalfi Coast
Sweeping views, amazing cliff-side towns and beaches packed with glamorous types, there’s a reason the Amalfi Coast is one of the most popular honeymoon destinations in Italy., As well as picturesque coastal towns such as Positano and Ravello, you’ll also find the chic islands of Capri and Ischia nearby.
Now, you may have seen pretty photos of the Amalfi Coast on Instagram, but this region is characterised by huge lemon groves, sandy beaches, crystal clear water, amazing coastal hikes (including the Path of the Gods ), and charming towns and villages.
Of course, it’s also dappled in southern Italian sunshine for the vast majority of the year, so it’s the ideal place to sit alfresco sipping a glass of local limoncello with your lover.
While there are endless luxury hotels to choose from in Positano , Sorrento and Capri , it’s hard to beat the old-world sophistication and luxury of the Luxury Villa Excelsior Parco . Located on the old grounds of a Roman Villa, this place is both historical and beautiful. You’ll never want to leave this amazing five-star hotel with its outstanding views!
I hope this guide to visiting Italy on honeymoon helps narrow down the key destinations for you! I struggled to pick just a few, but I’d also recommend Puglia , Lake Garda and the Aeolian Islands if you want to expand your plans.
If you’d like any more help planning your Italy honeymoon itinerary, I’d recommend reading my two road trip itineraries. There are plenty more amazing destinations to visit and they should help you craft your route through the country.

If you prefer a more private and personalized experience, we can arrange for a private car and driver. This option allows you to travel at your own pace and provides the flexibility to stop and explore hidden gems along the way.
For those looking to explore the beautiful coastline, a boat or yacht charter is a fantastic option. Cruise along the Amalfi Coast, visit the stunning islands of Capri or Ischia, and soak up the sun and sea breeze as you sail through the Mediterranean.
Budgeting for your Italy honeymoon package
Budgeting for your Italy honeymoon is an important step in the planning process. Italy offers a range of options to suit different budgets, from luxury accommodations and fine dining to more affordable alternatives.
When determining your budget, consider factors such as the duration of your trip, the destinations you wish to visit, and the level of luxury you desire. Our team of experts will work closely with you to create a customized itinerary that aligns with your budget while ensuring an unforgettable experience.
It is also worth considering the time of year you plan to visit Italy, as prices can vary depending on the season. Peak tourist season, which generally falls between June and August, tends to be more expensive, while the shoulder seasons of spring and fall offer more affordable rates.
Additional considerations for your Italy honeymoon
When planning your Italy honeymoon, there are a few additional considerations to keep in mind to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip:
1. Travel insurance: It is essential to have travel insurance that covers any unforeseen circumstances, such as trip cancellations, medical emergencies, or lost luggage. Our team can help you navigate the options and choose a policy that suits your needs.
2. Travel documents: Ensure that you have all the necessary travel documents, including a valid passport, visa (if required), and any other documentation specific to your country of residence.
3. Health and safety: Familiarize yourself with any health and safety recommendations for Italy, including vaccinations and travel advisories. It is also a good idea to pack a basic first aid kit for any minor medical needs.

If this sounds like you, then you'll love these handy honeymoon travel agents and planning services that will customize your ideal itinerary from the inspiration phase down to that final romantic meal. A Local Honeymoon Travel Agent
Every couple is different: some prefer to outsource honeymoon planning virtually—send an email and in the words of Elsa, "Let it go." Others seek the services of vetted luxury travel advisors with a 100% batting average (meaning five-star ratings) within the text group. A cohort of couples wants to connect meaningfully with their chosen local travel agent. Then there are those who are besties with their wedding coordinator, the types who like the personal experience of knowing their honeymoon travel agent. Look no further than The Knot Marketplace , where wedding travel advisors are its own standalone category. Search for reviews, testimonials and more on The Knot.
One of the newer names in the game, Elsewhere is making a splash for its hyper-localized approach to trip planning. "[Most companies hire] experts who are passionate about creating unforgettable experiences tailored to unique desires and interests," says Craig Zapatka, co-founder of the travel company. "Elsewhere takes this a step further: our advisors are in the destination. Each is from the chosen location and has up-to-date local insight that cannot always be found in blogs or guidebooks." The company is also mindful of the precariousness of travel, especially during volatile or peak seasons when the volume of the crowd balloons—it happens to the best of us. Elsewhere ensures each member of its team is vetted as a local expert with proper training. "You should only work with licensed and insured travel advisors and agents," says Zapatka. "Similar to choosing fiduciaries when you pick a financial advisory, the same rules apply to travel advisors."
Black Tomato
Fact: This editor randomly met newlyweds in a remote part of Africa whose itinerary was crafted by their Black Tomato honeymoon travel agent. Their experience gave clout to the award-winning tour operators, already known for crafting luxurious, off-the-beaten-path, and romantic adventures you've been craving for years on end. "Working with a travel company can alleviate logistical stress, and especially working with a travel expert, and destination, like those at Black Tomato, ensures that guidance comes from someone who is well-versed and frequently travels to the area," says Carly Moss, travel expert at the company. "The planning process allows for the couple and travel expert to become well acquainted with each other and feels more like taking advice from a friend, with serious chops and knowledge, rather than a business transaction, further contributing to ease and stress-free coordination ahead of the trip."
So don't spook yourself by typing "honeymoon ideas" into your search bar—instead, get in touch with a trip consultant whose only job is to listen to you and learn all about your travel preferences. They're also available 24/7 in case you have any burning questions, even after you touch down in paradise.

Slow Travel
Couples looking to interact with local communities in a more conscious and authentic way on their honeymoon will appreciate slow travel, where they can broaden their cultural horizons while establishing meaningful connections with each other as well as the world around them. “In previous years, I found clients eager to check the box on as many famous locations as possible in one trip, moving every two nights just to say they saw Big Ben, the Eiffel Tower, and the Colosseum,” says Mackenzie Peyser, a travel advisor at SmartFlyer , a Virtuoso agency. “I’m encouraged to see honeymooners slowing down and getting to know and enjoy one destination for a longer period of time, immersing themselves in the culture, cuisine, and landscape.”
What to Book
Newlyweds can call Eichardt's Private Hotel home while enjoying everything Queenstown, New Zealand, has to offer, including helicopter rides, mountain-top picnic lunches, and visits to local vineyards. Or, after checking into the historic Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni , stroll the streets of Bellagio, Italy, and enjoy romantic meals looking out at Lake Como. For those wanting to stay stateside, Carneros Resort and Spa in Napa, California, is the perfect home base, as duos can fill their days with bike rides, hikes, hot air balloon excursions and visits to Michelin-star restaurants and world-famous vineyards.
Event-Driven Honeymoons
“More and more couples are planning their honeymoon around a big moment such as a concert, sporting event, or festival,” says Mackenzie Peyser, a travel advisor at SmartFlyer , a Virtuoso agency. “Once they’ve selected the event, their date and location are set, making it easy to plan and customize a honeymoon.”
What to Book
Ticket holders to Taylor Swift’s June 2024 concert in Scotland can stay at the Gleneagles Townhouse , a luxury hotel within walking distance to all of the main sights in Edinburgh, while those attending Munich’s Oktoberfest in September/October 2024 can book a room at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof —which is a short walk to the beer garden at Viktualienmarkt. Heading to Paris during the 2024 summer Olympics? Avoid crowded hotels while still enjoying the games on a Viking or Uniworld river cruise down the Seine River.
Japan is quickly becoming a honeymoon destination where couples never run out of romantic and fun things to do—from signing up for a guided food and culture walking tour, to visiting a local fish market and taking a sushi making class, to staying at a ryokan and experiencing a mineral-rich hot spring bath, hiking up Mt. Fuji, and walking the white sandy beaches on the islands of Okinawa.
At Aman in Tokyo, newlyweds can relax in the two-story spa featuring a black basalt pool, stone bath and yoga studio. Couples looking for seclusion can stay at the Roku Kyot in Kyoto, where meals are sourced using seasonally inspired ingredients and an outdoor hot-spring thermal swimming pool makes for romantic dips. Lindblad Expeditions 20-day Japanese cruise features a stop in Mito, where visitors can visit the picturesque Kairakuen Garden , while Viking has a north Pacific passage that takes travelers all the way from Tokyo to Alaska.
Conservation and Regenerative Focused Travel
Couples focused on sustainability are requesting stays at locations with a strong conservation component and itineraries that pay-it-forward. “It’s important their honeymoon has a meaningful story, plus they want to know their money is going to a place that supports local projects,” says Crisney Lane, founder of Mosaic Safaris , a Virtuoso agency. Regenerative travel takes things a step further by prioritizing not only the protection and preservation of natural environments and local ecosystems, but by playing an active role in their regeneration, explains Mery Calderon, founder and CEO of Kuoda Travel .
In South Africa, newlyweds participate in school projects sponsored by Bushcamps Company in the South Luangwa National Park Zambia and plant local trees and play a part in a rhino monitoring project at Kwandwe in the Eastern Cape. If you visit Central Africa, you can walk through the rainforest in thigh-high water and learn more about the native gorillas at the Kamba camps in the Republic of Congo, while guests at Casa Chameleon at Las Catalinas in Costa Rica can prepare meals for animals undergoing rehabilitation at the Monkey Park Foundation. At Kaypi Kunan in Peru, newlyweds are encouraged to assist local community members with musical and computer training skills.

Some newlyweds have the desire to share their honeymoon experiences with others. “They want to make memories while bonding with friends and family, often opting to take the first half of their honeymoon with the group and the second half alone,” says Crisney Lane, founder of Mosaic Safaris , a Virtuoso agency. The trip is usually more affordable because the cost is often shared. “Traveling with others can increase vacation spending power,” adds Alex Johnson, a spokesperson for Vacasa .
At The Loren in Bermuda, guests can rent The Residence , a six-bedroom 10,700-square-foot home that sits on over five acres of private land adjacent to the resort, which comes with its own private beach, tennis court, pool, chef’s kitchen, and media room. The Hotel Manapany on St. Barts has a variety of group accommodations—from beachfront suites to larger, private VIP villas where an on-site coordination team can arrange private group dinners on the beach with music and dancing, cocktail classes at the bar with a mixologist, and wellness retreats at the spa with trainers specializing in yoga and Pilates.
At The Shore Club in Turks and Caicos, guests can book one of the 8,800-square-foot, six-bedroom luxury villas boasting a heated pool, expansive terraces, and ocean views. The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection offers chartered boats where couples can marry and then spend a few days celebrating and sailing with close family and friends.
Rediscovering Greece
Greece remains a popular honeymoon destination but many couples are focusing less on Instagrammable locations such as Mykonos and Santorini, and more on lesser populated places, like the islands of Paros and Crete and the Peloponnese Peninsula. “Newlyweds visiting these areas get to escape the crowds and experience Greece in an authentic way, while getting more value for the money,” says Mandy McKaskle, founder and luxury travel advisor at Creosote Journeys , a Virtuoso agency.
On the Peloponnese Peninsula, honeymooners can discover the Mandarin Oriental Costa Navarino , which offers stunning views of the countryside and sea, the beachfront Romanos Resort , which features endless onsite activities like golf and twelve court tennis courts, and Amanzoe , a resort that emphasizes well-being where guests can join a local farmer and his family for a meal.
On Paros, honeymooners can relax at Cosme , a luxurious beachfront location with a modern design and laid-back vibe—and on Crete, an island filled with colorful bougainvillea-lined streets, newlyweds can book rooms at the recently renovated Blue Palace (which reopens in April 2024) and the luxurious Amirandes Grecotel Boutique Resort .
Trip Stacking Honeymoons
While many honeymooners plan a seven-to-10-day post-wedding getaway, some seek out romantic excursions that last weeks—or even months. “Trip stacking is a subset of revenge travel, where couples are taking longer honeymoons. For example, they’re adding multiple Europe trips together, such as several back-to-back cruises,” says Ellen Bettridge, president & CEO of Uniworld Boutique River Cruises .
For couples looking to experience Australia’s natural wonders, Viking offers a 32-day sailing experience that circumnavigates the country. (There’s also a 15-day sailing option that includes New Zealand.) Uniworld’s 2024 itinerary features a 15-day cruise and rail trip that takes guests through the natural wonderland of the Alps via a luxury overnight train, followed by a romantic eight-day cruise through the heart of Venice. Norwegian Cruises offers a transatlantic 15-day sailing that starts in New York City and ends in London with stops in Iceland, Amsterdam, and Paris; it includes eight relaxing days at sea.
Celestial Experiences
“We’ve seen a steady rise in couples planning honeymoons around romantic celestial moments that include on-site astronomers, stargazing packages, or even a curated trip based on their partner’s zodiac sign,” says Marsha-Ann Donaldson-Brown, director of weddings and romance, Sandals Resorts International .
The Alpine Falls Ranch in Montana offers stargazing picnics with blankets, sweets, and Champagne and a glamping experience in an oversized tent that includes a s’mores set-up. Sedona is an official “ Dark Sky City ,” making Arizona’s L’Auberge de Sedona the perfect spot for stargazing (bonus: telescopes in the room). Designated villas at the Sandals Dunn’s River in Jamaica include the services of a personal stargazing concierge to help guide couples around the constellations. Guests on Viking can view the Northern Lights in Norway from one of the comfortable spaces on the ship or while snuggling up outdoors during an overnight excursion.
Ice Safaris
Expedition travel is taking the ultra-luxury honeymoon sector by storm, with couples wanting to experience unique, untouched wonders of the world. “As a result, expedition and nature-based travel led by researchers and guides have become a popular honeymoon option,” says Amina Dearmon , a luxury travel advisor at Perspectives Travel , a Virtuoso agency.
Trek through ice tunnels, sleep in cozy igloos, and ski along snowy landscapes with a trip to Antarctica booked through the travel company, White Desert . Or cruise with Seabourn’s 24-person expedition team which includes scientists, historians, and naturalists who can provide insight on wildlife and geography. On Viking , whose expedition ships come equipped with zodiacs, special operations boats, and submarines, honeymooners have the opportunity to experience penguins and sea lions in South America’s seldom-visited subantarctic islands.
The Amalfi Coast
“The Amalfi Coast has become my honeymooners’ number-one requested destination, thanks to its dramatic cliffside coast, indulgent cuisine, and photo-worthy sights,” says Kristi Zalesky, a destination weddings designer at Explore Your World Vacations .
Travel experts recommend The Excelsior Vittoria in Sorrento, the Caruso, A Belmond Hotel in Ravello, the Hotel Santa Caterina in Amalfi, and Il San Pietro and La Sirenuse in Positano for old-world charm, luxurious upscale service, and all the romance.
Pre-Wedding Minimoons
Couples are booking a two-to-three-day getaway to a spa or inn prior to their wedding, where they can relax and enjoy each other's company in anticipation of their upcoming festivities. “These mini trips offer an intimate escape before the whirlwind of wedding celebrations,” says Kristi Zalesky, a destination weddings designer at Explore Your World Vacations .
Engaged couples prepare their feet for dancing with a rejuvenating leg and feet massage at the Dewberry Spa at The Dewberry Hotel in Charleston, South Carolina, and clear their heads in an eucalyptus-infused limestone steam shower at the Away Spa at the W South Beach in Miami. The oceanfront Paséa Hotel & Spa in Huntington Beach, California, offers a two-night minimoon, which includes a 100-minute couples massage at Aarna Spa , a private pool cabana, and in-room Champagne. Guests at the Cavalier Hotel and Beach Club in Virginia Beach, Virginia, can de-stress in the indoor-outdoor pool followed by a skin-glowing oxygen crystal facial at the SeaHill Spa .

Delayed Honeymoons
Many newlyweds are opting to postpone their honeymoon instead of embarking on a trip immediately following their wedding. “Some couples delay for a few days to spend quality time with guests who have traveled in for the wedding, while others wait a few months in order to accommodate work schedules or to refill their energy tank or bank account,” says Amina Dearmon, a luxury travel advisor at Perspectives Travel , a Virtuoso agency.
Putting a pause on the honeymoon allows couples to travel at a different time of year, which can open up their destination options.
If balmy breezes and white beaches have always been part of your dream honeymoon, there’s no better place to celebrate than Fiji, where water and air temperatures remain in the mid-80s year-round. “Fiji is one of the best values in the South Pacific with the U.S. dollar worth about twice the value of the Fijian dollar,” says Piper Fenton, a luxury travel designer at Remarkable Honeymoons , a Virtuoso agency. “It’s here where couples encounter some of the friendliest islanders in the world—be prepared to be greeted with a warm and lively ‘Bula,’ Fijians way of saying hello at every turn.”
Take a boat or helicopter ride to one of the 330 private islands that make up Fiji, including Turtle Island, where couples are assigned a dedicated personal concierge and their own private beach, Matangi Private Island Resort, where honeymooners can hide out in a luxury air-conditioned treehouse surrounded by lush tropical foliage and at adults-only Royal Davui Island, where guests can relax in their own private plunge pool.

Staying at Hotels Made Famous by TV Shows
Couples want to experience hotels made popular by television shows, says Mandy McKaskle, founder and luxury travel advisor at Creosote Journeys , a Virtuoso agency. “Netflix’s romantic Korean drama Crash Landing on You has brought an influx of fans to the tiny Swiss village of Iseltwald, while its series Emily in Paris has made an already romantic French city even more popular,” she says. “Sicily continues to experience strong growth thanks in part to Max’s hit White Lotus , where honeymooners have learned to appreciate the area’s rich history, incredible food and wine, beautiful sights, and Italian hospitality.”
Newlyweds can book rooms in the hotels where filming of the above-mentioned shows took place. At Victoria-Jungfrau Hotel , located in the Interlaken region of Switzerland, couples take private boat rides around the beautiful Lake Brienz. Emily Cooper (played by Lily Collins on Emily in Paris ) would approve of the romantic views of the Eiffel Tower in the higher floor rooms at Grand Hotel du Palais Royal and Tanya McQuoid (the character on White Lotus made famous by Jennifer Coolidge) would most certainly give a thumbs-up to a stay at San Domenico Palace , a Four Seasons hotel in Taormina set in a former 14th-century convent with panoramic views of Mt. Etna.

I’ve always thought that planning my own trips was the most cost-effective way, but I’ve been hearing more about travel agents making a comeback and saving their clients a lot of money. What kinds of outdoor trips should I turn to a travel agent for, and are there any who specialize in working with adventurers like me?
Technically, I’m a professional traveler. As a journalist, it’s my job to research and connect with locals to get beneath the surface of a destination. So I have never really used travel agents. What could they plan better than I could?
A lot, it turns out. Over the years, I’ve gotten to know many travel specialists, and I consider them magicians. My big aha moment happened two winters ago on a trip to Iceland . A massive storm shut down internal flights for a day, causing me to miss my return flight to the U.S. Normally, I would have spent frustrating hours on hold with the airline. But because I’d paid $65 to have Ana Gloria Garcia, an air-support specialist at the travel agency EmbarkBeyond, find and book the most affordable and convenient flight option for me, she handled the rebookings while I soaked in the Blue Lagoon.
During the pandemic, agents became advocates helping travelers get refunds on canceled flights and trips. As travel has come roaring back, an agent’s superpower is now their access to the best hotel rooms, most in-the-know guides, free amenities, and more, says Cory Hagopian, senior vice president of sales and partnerships for Virtuoso , a global network of travel agencies.
And they’re attracting a young clientele. According to a recent industry survey , 38 percent of millennials and Gen Zers are opting to use travel agents as opposed to booking on their own trips. That number is far greater than Gen Xers and baby boomers, of whom only 12 and 2 percent respectively use agents.
What Do I Gain from Using a Travel Agent?
I recently had a friend tell me she spent close to 40 hours researching a family trip online. She probably could have gleaned the same intel from an hourlong conversation with a travel adviser. Knowledge is priceless, and advisers act as your insiders. They know what you don’t and fill in the blanks for things you might not have considered, says Erika Richter, a spokesperson for the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA). Their firsthand knowledge, vast network, and on-the-ground connections all combine to provide a unique perspective for crafting the perfect itinerary for you.
Most travel advisers specialize in certain regions and countries and travel to them frequently, so they have up-to-date intel on not only the best safari camps but the perfect tent to book for the most incredible views and the best local restaurants you won’t find on Tripadvisor. They want their client’s trips to go well to keep them coming back, so it’s in their interest to have sussed out hotels and itineraries before they send you out into the world.
Nicole Forster, 29, considers herself a savvy traveler. She’s been to 20-plus countries and enjoys destination research. But when it came to planning her honeymoon in Africa, she felt overwhelmed, so she reached out to Danielle Meyer at Coastline Travel Advisors , which specializes in bespoke itineraries. “Originally, I wanted to go to South Africa, Victoria Falls, and Madagascar,” Forster recalls. “Danielle convinced me that if we wanted to relax, we should stay in South Africa and save the other countries for separate trips.”
Over five phone conversations and multiple emails, they crafted a 15-night itinerary that included Cape Town, the winelands, the Cape Peninsula, and a safari at the Thornybush Game Reserve. Forster established her budget early in the process, and Meyer sent her a variety of lodge options to choose from.
“I initially wanted to start with the safari, but she pointed out that we’d be jet-lagged and would need to wake at sunrise for game drives,” says Forster. “The safari was our highlight, so it was a perfect way to end the trip.”
Not only did Meyer book all of the flights, hotels, and transfers, but she created a detailed, day-by-day trip app for the couple that included useful information like check-in times at hotels and how much to tip guides .
Agents also act as advocates. If something goes wrong during your travels, they’re on call 24/7 to handle it. When Forster left the battery and charger for her camera at a hotel, Meyer arranged for an on-the-ground contact to go to a camera store and buy new ones that would be delivered to her hotel the next day.
The cost for the honeymoon planning: $150 per person. “I wouldn’t use a planner for a trip to Hawaii ,” Forster says, “but if I ever took a big trip like this again, I’d 100 percent work with an expert.”
When to Consider Using a Travel Agent
For savvy trip planners, the best time to use a travel agent is for complicated international travel. It can save you hours of planning and peace of mind that if anything goes wrong in your chosen far-flung destination, there’s someone a What’sApp message away to handle it.
Domestically, I’d consider using a travel agent when planning a multi-week national park trip or multi-island trip in Hawaii. They will save you time, guarantee you get the best guides, and help you land reservations at always-booked lodges and hotels.
Dream Trips Delivered
Jessica Cook and her husband both work in the travel industry. Decision fatigued, they handed their honeymoon logistics over to the team at Askari Travel , an agency that specializes in South Africa. Their original plan was also an African safari, but just as they were about to put a deposit down, the Omicron variant of the coronavirus made headlines. Worried about getting stuck abroad, they reached out to Askari’s founder, Muriel Truter, who is from Zimbabwe, and upon her advice, changed their focus to South America.
Knowledge is priceless, and advisers act as your insiders. They know what you don’t and fill in the blanks of things you might not even have considered.
Truter suggested they stick to Colombia rather than country-hop. Cook supplied a budget and a wish list: 12 days, no more than three destinations, a barefoot-luxe feel, and adventures like horseback riding and mountain biking. The rest was a surprise that Askari pretty much nailed, with the exception of one hotel.
“Everything felt so authentic, but this one hotel on Barú island felt really fabricated and was full of American tourists,” recalls Cook. She immediately messaged the Askari team, saying, “Hey, this place really isn’t our vibe,” and within an hour they were on a water taxi headed to Blue Apple, a B Corp hotel—and an Outside pick for tropical adventures —on Tierra Bomba island. “It was honestly the best trip we’ve ever taken,” she says.
Are Travel Agents Expensive?
It depends. Cost varies. Some travel agencies won’t charge any fee, as they receive a commission from the bookings, while some high-end agencies will charge pricey annual membership fees for their services. Still others charge nominal “professional” fees starting at $150. Fees often fluctuate based on the length and intricacy of a trip and how far out you do the planning (6 to 12 months is recommended). You may occasionally come across agents who charge a percentage of the total trip price or hourly rates.
Basic travel enquiries are generally free. In 2016, Leah Smith, founder of Tafari Travel , opened an old-school brick-and-mortar location in Denver’s Cherry Creek neighborhood so her services would feel less intimidating to first-time users. “With our retail-office location, we’ve become part of the community, and both clients and non-clients are welcome to pop in and ask whatever questions they may have, no charge,” she says.
Matt Lindsay, founder of the surf-guiding and travel company LuxSurf Travel , builds relationships with resorts and property owners to get discounted rates that he can then pass on to guests.
Dominic Allan, the founder of Real Latin America , specializes in travel to Belize and Nicaragua and caters to independent travelers who are happy to book their own flights and hotels but are seeking his local intel. Allan’s three-tier pricing structure starts at $300 for up to three hours of phone calls, during which he might weigh in on where to eat (or not to), the best room to request in a certain lodge, or whether you really need a guide to hike.
Value Versus Savings
If you’re just looking for deals and steals, you might not be ready to work with a travel adviser, says Richter of the ASTA. “Anything you invest in with a travel adviser comes back to you in the form of amenities, customer service, peace of mind, better access to unique experiences, and handcrafted itineraries,” she says. “You could save money by cutting your own hair, too, but most people go to someone who knows what they’re doing.”
Agents work with preferred partners who can guarantee perks for clients, such as free upgrades, early check-in or late check-out, and resort credits. Those add-ons often translate into savings, says Justin Huxter, cofounder of the UK-based Cartology Travel . “We had a client go to Maui for a week, and because of our partnership with the resort, breakfast was included,” he says. When breakfast costs $120 for two, that’s a savings of $840.”

Some of my go-to resources for finding a person to work with include travel expert Wendy Perrin’s annual Wow List of tried and trusted agents, the Adventure Travel Trade Association’s adviser network , and the ASTA’s advisor directory .
