Have you ever gone cruising in a houseboat on the backwaters of Kerala? If you haven't, make sure you do. This is easily one amongst the most remarkable and unique experiences that our state has to offer.

Present day houseboats are huge, slow moving exotic barges used for leisure trips, and are in fact a reworked version of the Kettuvallams of olden times. The original Kettuvallams were used to carry tons of rice and spices. A standard Kettuvallam can hold up to 30 tons of goods from Kuttanad to the Kochi port.

In Malayalam language Kettu refers to ‘dwelling structures’ ‘Vallam’ means boat. These are boats with a thatched roof cover over wooden hulls. The boat is made of planks of jack-wood joined together with coir. This is then coated with a caustic black resin made from boiled cashew kernels. With careful maintenance, a Kettuvallam can last for generations.

A portion of the Kettuvallam was covered with bamboo and coir to serve as a restroom and kitchen for the crew. Meals were cooked onboard and supplemented with freshly cooked fish from the backwaters.

When  modern trucks replaced this system of transport, people came up with a new way that would keep these boats, almost all of which were more than 100 years old, in the market. By constructing special rooms to accommodate travellers, these boats cruised forward from near-extinction to enjoy their present  popularity.

Today these are a familiar sight on the backwaters and in Alappuzha alone, there are as many as 500 houseboats.

While converting kettuvallams into houseboats, care is taken to use only natural products. Bamboo mats, sticks and wood of the areca nut tree are used for roofing, coir mats and wooden planks for the flooring and wood of coconut trees and coir for beds. Nowadays, Solar panels are preferred for lighting.

Today, the houseboats boast of the same comforts of a good hotel including furnished bedrooms, modern toilets, cozy living rooms, a kitchen and even a balcony for angling. Parts of the curved roof of wood or plaited palm leaves open out to provide shade and allow uninterrupted views. While most boats are poled by local oarsmen, some are powered by a 40 HP engine. Boat-trains - formed by joining two or more houseboats together are also used by large groups of sightseers.

What is truly magical about a houseboat ride is the breathtaking view of the untouched and otherwise inaccessible rural Kerala that it offers, while you float in a relaxed way right through it.

Do keep in mind that boats with more than two bedrooms will be too big to cruise the narrow waterways though.

The minimum rate for overnight hire is around 5,000 rupees ($70) without air-conditioning. Most people pay around 10,000 rupees ($140) upwards to hire a deluxe air-conditioned houseboat for two. Rates easily go up to 18,000 rupees ($255) or more for a luxury houseboat. Large family sized houseboats, with multiple bedrooms and living rooms, are also available for hire. Prices start from around 20,000 rupees ($280) for one of these, for an overnight trip. The cost should include freshly cooked food, made by an onboard cook, and non-alcoholic drinks. 

When Is the Best Time to Hire a Houseboat?

Peak season is from December to the end of January when the weather is cooler and dry, but it's possible to hire a houseboat all year round. Some people find that the monsoon season has special appeal and choose to combine their houseboat hire with an Ayurvedic treatment. Attractive monsoon discounts are offered as well. March to May gets very hot and humid, so if you hire a houseboat during this time, an air-conditioned one is definitely recommended.

Keep in mind that peak season does get busy. Don't be surprised to find the canals congested with houseboats!

Unfortunately, the boom in backwater tourism and associated proliferation in houseboats is having a negative impact on the environment in Kerala. In particular, poor waste management practices are noticeably polluting the waterways around Alleppey and Kumarakom. In order to address this, the Kerala government has introduced a new houseboat classification system with Silver, Gold and Diamond ratings (to replace the older Silver Star, Gold Star and Green Palm categories). The ratings are based on factors including responsible waste management, disability-friendly features, use of eco-friendly materials, codes of conduct for guests and staff, quality of furnishings and fixtures, use of LED lamps, bio-gas stoves, smoke alarms, and first-aid kits.

There are so many houseboats for hire at Alleppey that it's not necessary to book in advance, apart from during the peak season. Instead head down to the jetty in the early morning (before 9 a.m.), inspect the boats there, and negotiate the best price. Then go back to your hotel, pack your belongings, and when you return to the boat it will be ready to depart.

During peak season, the availability of quality boats drops dramatically, and prices get hiked. As prices aren't properly regulated, they can fluctuate widely. The 'backwaters' is the name of the enchanting palm-lined waterways that are synonymous with Kerala. This 900-odd kilometre labyrinth of canals connects large regions of Kerala and was constructed centuries ago for transporting cargo, such as spices and rice.

Traditional boats called kettuvallam (made by tying pieces of wood together with coir rope, made from coconut fibres) collected the cargo from isolated villages along the waterways and carried it to traders in town. However, use of the boats fell as a preference for modern forms of transport grew. The vessels are now being used for houseboat trips on Kerala's backwaters and have become one of the region's most popular attractions.

Kerala's backwaters still function as an important hub of local life. Commuting, fishing and farming are frequently undertaken on the backwaters and a Keralan houseboat trip provides a fascinating glimpse into these everyday activities. An overnight stay or multi-day backwaters cruise aboard a traditional Keralan houseboat will reward you with a surreal sunset reflected on the water; delicious Keralan food, freshly cooked on board the boat, makes it even more enjoyable.

Here's an idea of what to expect and how a backwaters houseboat cruise works.

What are Kerala houseboats like?

Keralan houseboats come in various shapes and sizes, from basic to ultra-luxurious. There are even houseboats with spas and swimming pools.

The smallest houseboats have one bedroom, while the largest have ten. Some have rooftop sun decks. Keep in mind that only one and two-bedroom houseboats can cruise along the narrow waterways. Bigger houseboats won't fit here and are best for shorter trips.

Most houseboats are quite comfortable with living rooms, dining rooms, modern amenities, air-conditioning, and en-suite bathrooms. Expect all your meals to be cooked for you by an onboard chef. Most houseboats will ask you to specify whether you want vegetarian or non-vegetarian meals before setting off.

Be aware that you'll spend most of your time on the water. This is a chance to switch off from life, meditate on the views and slow down—not something you always get to do when travelling in India.

Where are the Kerala backwaters?

The Kerala backwaters primarily extend from the major port city of Kochi to coastal Kollam. However, there are backwaters in the far north and south of the state as well.

The main starting point for most backwater cruises is Alleppey, about two hours south of Kochi. Known as the ‘City of Canals’ and the ‘Venice of the East’, Alleppey is the centre of backwater houseboat tourism. Nearby Kumarakom is also a popular place for houseboats.

Of the 1,200 plus houseboats in Kerala, about 700 operate in the core waterways of Alleppey and Kumarakom. Depending on your itinerary, it might be better to begin your houseboat trip elsewhere to avoid this overcrowding. This is particularly true if you don't want to find yourself surrounded by dozens of boats on standard routes during the peak season of December and January . Some are likely to be laden with rowdy domestic tourists who delight in playing loud music and getting drunk. Recommended alternative starting points are Kottayam, Kollam, Kasargod in northern Kerala, and Kozhikode (Calicut).

How long should I spend on a Kerala houseboat trip?

Houseboat trips are typically for one-day or overnight. However, it's possible to hire a houseboat for shorter or longer lengths. A three-night trip will cover the top canals, interior villages, and more remote waterways. However, a brief three-hour trip may not be sufficient if you're interested in seeing a lot of the small canals or want to experience rural life.

You can combine a houseboat trip with a stay at a resort or homestay along the backwaters. Many accommodations have their own houseboats, and offer overnight and sunset cruises.

Do note that the boats must be moored after sunset, so that fishing activity isn't disturbed.

Keralan houseboat routes and what to see

Alleppey-Kumarakom

The most common Keralan houseboat routes are round trips from Alleppey and Kumarakom. The Alleppey waterways are made up of a mixture of wide and narrow canals, dotted with villages and paddy fields. Alleppey is also a centre of coir manufacturing with factories that you can visit. Kumarakom has wider waterways and is dominated by the vast expanse of Lake Vembanad (one of the largest freshwater lakes in Asia). Highlights include the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary and Pathiramanal Island, where you can see cormorants, herons and kingfishers, amongst many other bird species. In between Alleppey and Kumarakom are sprawling reclaimed farming areas such as C Block, R Block, and H Block.

North of Kumarakom, the rivers and canals of Vaikom merge with Vembanad Lake. Tranquil Vaikom is one of the oldest townships in Kerala and offers village life experiences. Pottery, mat weaving, coconut processing, sand mining, and making coir ropes are carried out there. This is a convenient destination for one-day backwater excursions from Kochi, as it's only an hour away by car from the city.

Alleppey-Kuttanad

Those who want to avoid the glut of houseboats will find the unconventional Alleppey- Kuttanad route via Punnamada Lake the most appealing. This encompasses quiet and calm waterways around Thottappally, Nedumudi and Thakazhi. The Kuttanad district is referred to as the ‘rice bowl of Kerala’ and cultivation of rice here is intriguingly done below sea level.

Kollam-Ashtamudi Lake

Kollam has grown in popularity as a backwater destination but it's yet to become touristy. It offers a very different experience to Alleppey and Kumarakom due to its important history. It has one of the oldest trading ports on the state's coast and a thriving cashew industry. Ashtamudi Lake is the focal point of houseboat trips in this area, with mangroves and migratory birds. There are more than 15 islands on the lake. One of them is Monroe Island, which draws visitors who want an authentic slice of local life away from the crowds. Routes cover the islands and pass through relatively unexplored waterways. You'll get to see plantations, Chinese fishing nets, rustic villages, a heritage palace, and diverse places of worship.

Kozhikode backwaters

The unspoiled Kozhikode backwaters are situated near Kappad beach and Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary, about five hours north of Kochi. This area is also historically important, as it's where Portuguese explorer Vasco Da Gama landed in the 15th century. Houseboat trip routes include Canolly Canal, Kallai River and Ellathur village.

One-way houseboat trips

It's possible to take a one-way houseboat trip, starting in one destination and ending in another, such as Alleppey to Kumarakom. The cost may be higher if the boat needs to return to its original departure point. The route between Alleppey and Kollam is ideal for a longer one-way trip, extending across two nights. It's very scenic with many narrow canals, farm fields, and secluded villages. Plus, it goes past Amritapuri Ashram of Amma , the "Hugging Mother". Alumkadavu, where houseboats are built, is another attraction on the route.

Other off-the-radar routes include Alleppey to Kidangara (one-night), Alleppey to Mankotta (one-night), Chettuva to Manaloor in Thrissur district, and the Poothotta backwaters near Kumarakom.

Hidden gems on the Kerala backwaters

A newly renovated cruise boat terminal at Kochi is set to increase backwater tourism in the area, with routes covering city landmarks such as Bolgatti Palace and Cochin Shipyards, and Vypeen Island. However, tourists who want to go on a backwater trip from Kochi in a traditional-style houseboat are typically taken to departure points elsewhere.

Northern Kerala

Houseboat tourism is still in its infancy in northern Kerala's Kasaragod district, meaning idyllic and undisturbed waterways. There are a couple of houseboat routes here. One runs between Payyanur and Kottapuram near Nileshwar, covering Valiyaparamba Island and the Kavvayi backwaters. Oyster Opera theme village, dedicated to oyster farming, lies along this route. The other route covers the waterways around Chandragiri, near Bekal, where there's a 17th century fort built by Sivappa Naik of Bedanore.

Southern Kerala

In far southern Kerala, the waterways around capital city Trivandrum are defined by lakes and rivers. This area has fewer houseboats and isn't optimal for backwater trips. A cruise along the picturesque Poovar backwaters, about an hour south of Trivandrum, in a motorboat or country boat is your best bet.

How to book a Keralan backwater tour

Another alternative is to spend a night or two at a hotel or homestay alongside the waterways and dreamily watch the houseboats go by. Numerous options are concentrated around Alleppey and Kumarakom.

Those who are travelling on a budget and want to save money can take one of the public ferry services operated by the State Water Transport Department, such as the one between Alleppey and Kottayam.

Before and after your houseboat trip

Love tea? include the hill town of Munnar on your itinerary. It's one of India's top tea producing areas where you can see tea being harvested, go tea tasting, take a plantation walk, and even stay on a plantation. It's about a six hour drive from Kochi.

Kochi will charm anyone who appreciates architecture and history. It's a beguiling blend of Arab, British, Dutch, Chinese, Portuguese, and Jewish influences. A bit over an hour north of Kochi, the Muziris heritage precinct (from North Paravur to Kodungallur) has some of the oldest religious structures in India, dating back thousands of years to the time Muziris was an ancient port city. It's one of the country's biggest conservation projects.

The most popular attractions in this forested area in Kerala's Idukki district are Periyar National Park, the spice plantations at Kumily, and local tribal villages.

This lush hilly region along the Western Ghat mountains also has tea, coffee and spice plantations. It attracts adventure enthusiasts who trek to spots such as Chembra Peak and Meenmutty Falls and go bamboo rafting at Kuruva Island. The prehistoric carvings at Edakkal caves are compelling too.

Marari Beach

Visiting the backwaters around Alleppey and want a beach break nearby? Marari borders a fishing village and remains relatively undeveloped, yet has a temping range of accommodations. Some are bang on the beach and offer authentic Ayurvedic treatments.

Folk arts and dance

Kathakali (an elaborately costumed dance-drama) is the most well known of Kerala's many unique and unusual folk art forms. Others include theyyam ( an ancient ritual art form that involves the channeling of deities that come to earth), kalaripayattu (a form of martial arts), and pulikali (tiger play performed during the Onam festival, whereby men dress up as tigers and dance to traditional percussion instruments).

Kerala Backwaters - Through the Canals with a Houseboat

If you’ve had enough of the parties and hippies in Goa , you can relax a few hundred kilometres further south in Kerala.

Kerala – green and relaxed

The communist state in South India captivates with green rice fields, deserted (well, not entirely…) beaches and myriad choices of Ayurveda institutions . If you don’t quite dare to indulge in a 21-day Panchakarma cure yet, we recommend a beautiful houseboat tour , during which you can absorb the relaxed spirit of Kerala.

How to get to Alleppey in Kerala

Most of the houseboat tours start in Alleppey (Alappuzha), a small town about 3 hours from the nearest airport, Kochi. I’d recommend to arrive in Kochi the evening before, spend a night there and then take a taxi the next morning (I couldn’t find any other transport possibilities) to Alleppey. Most tours start around 11.00 am in the morning anyway, so an earlier arrival is not really necessary. All boats leave from the same pier.

Pick your boats

Unfortunately, the houseboat tour is no longer a secret and most package tours have a round trip of the backwaters in their program. However, self-organized they are usually cheaper and you can choose the boat yourself, which is a great advantage.

The quality varies. For the same price a wide variety of boats are offered – it is worth to have a look inside. Most of them have air conditioning, two or three bedrooms and a viewing platform with some form of seating on it (if you are lucky, there are even sun beds).

Some boats are two-storied with a comfortable lounge area on the upper deck, which I can highly recommend. We had booked in advance (because of high season) and chose the „Angel Queen“-Boat , which was lovely, but certainly not the cheapest option.

Outside the main season in December you can certainly negotiate cheaper prices, but you should expect to pay 90 € for a small boat per day.

The logistics of your Kerala boat trip

Depending on its size, your boat consists of several bedrooms (there are of course boats with only one bedroom), some sort of living room/viewing platform/dining room and a kitchen. The bathroom is usually en suite, – if there are several bedrooms, then each room has its own bathroom (depends on the boat, of course, but that’s the norm).

The boat trips always includes breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as drinking water and tea. Everyone who likes to enjoy a chilled beer or a nice glass of wine should prearrange that – often the boats have no alcohol on board. That means: either bring your own or tell the crew to go shopping for you. The latter is then usually associated with a small fee.

The staff of the boat consists of the captain, a cook and an additional employee who cleans, serves and does all kinds of other stuff. Depending on the size of the boat, there may also be other employees on board.

I’d recommend to book a „3D2N-Tour“ . That means two nights and three days. It’s probably not worth to do it longer, because the landscape doesn’t change much and I had the feeling that after 3 days on the boat I had seen enough. Shorter and longer trips are of course still possible.

The captain explained the route at the beginning, but that didn’t help us a lot, because the canals look very similar – and therefore it is very easy to lose track of where you’re going! That doesn’t really matter though, because you don’t have to do anything anyway.

Culinary highlights

All meals are freshly prepared for you every day in the galley. The meals were always a feast! The South Indian cuisine impresses with its lightness, balanced aromas and its very own delicious taste.

For breakfast, for example, there were Dosas , Indian pancakes, which you can top with fresh fruit or spice up with all kinds of spicy chutneys. Lunch and dinner were dished up huge – served on banana leaves: chutneys, relishes, curries, fish, shrimp, chicken, tofu, bread, rice. No culinary desire remained unfulfilled and it was a pleasure to enjoy the amazingly fresh food. There was always enough for everyone plus refill.

For dessert, if there was any possible space left, we had fruits. As if this was not enough, there was always a little snack for afternoon tea – either homemade cookies or fried bananas. You can tell that food was a very important part of this trip and often we counted the hours until we finally had dinner again. The boat was always anchored during the meal times, so that nobody got seasick either.

Discovering the pleasure of slow

But nobody gets seasick in Kerala. There are no waves or winds on the artificial canals through the rice fields that could make the boat rock (except in the monsoon maybe). The boat moves so slowly that the world passes in slow motion – it’s hard not to relax! (spoiler alert: on our boat we even had WiFi if you can’t stand the remoteness anymore).

If you travel in a group, it could be fun to bring a deck of cards. But it is also completely sufficient to just relax, look at the rice fields and observe the daily life of the people on the river bank.

Rice fields, palm trees and the small villages of Kerala

The rice swayed in the gentle breeze, sunbeams played on the water, birds sang – for me Kerala was a real paradise. From the boat you can take wonderful pictures, wave at children, watch birds, fish, monkeys and sometimes snakes. If you are not yet a nature freak, you will definitely become one here! The sunsets on the water are something very special and offer a splendid play of colours every evening.

Shore excursions, anyone?

Most boat tours also offer at least one shore excursion. In our case this meant that we could buy super delicious fresh fish directly from the fish market (we passed it on to our cook who then prepared it with ginger, lemon grass, coconut milk and chili in a banana leaf – YUMMY!) We also visited a catholic church and were lucky that a wedding was taking place right now, so we could admire a lot of beautiful saris , which were shimmering in all colours of the rainbow.

A tour with the houseboat for 2-3 days is worthwhile in any case, even if the price may seem high at the beginning – you can often bargain if you don’t pre-book. Afterwards you are truly relaxed and can dive back into your India adventure!

Amazing Kerala Backwater Houseboats for all budgets!

Time has stood still on the serene backwaters of Kerala. The meandering canals and the silent water channels mark a course spanning 900 km across the length and breadth of Kerala.

One of the best ways to experience the region is by staying in a houseboat (check out my post on cruising the backwaters of Kerala ).

There are loads of houseboats on the Kerala Backwaters to choose from but not all are made equal. So it’s really important to carefully research which houseboat in Kerala you will be going on to make sure you get the best experience on the backwaters – one of my highlights of all India!

How to find Backwater Houseboats in Alleppey, Kerala

The most popular place to board a houseboat on the Kerala Backwaters is Alleppey (Alappuzha) but there are also other places where you can board, like Kumarakom.

When I first went on the Kerala backwaters in 2013 you had to go to Alleppey and haggle with the touts to get a houseboat and it was always a bit of a gamble whether you would get a decent boat at a decent rate.

Luckily now there are some houseboats that you can book in advance online on Booking.com so you can check out photos and reviews beforehand and you don’t have to haggle over price which makes it much easier and less stressful! 🙂

I’ve also put this post together with the best houseboats on the Kerala backwaters to make it even easier for you to pre-book your Kerala backwater houseboat experience before you even arrive in India so that your trip runs smoothly.

Alleppey offers an excellent choice of houseboats overall. It’s an amazing town with beaches, temples, and wellness centres.

Kumarakom, on the other hand, is perfect for those who’d like a glimpse of the mangrove forests, the paddy fields, and the coconut groves and it is also home to some incredible luxury resorts.

The pricing of the houseboats will depend on factors such as the size of the boat, the facilities on offer, and the packages you choose. Most of the time, the meals will be a part of the 24-hour stay package.

Some of the best houseboats on the Kerala Backwaters also include a trip in a smaller boat or canoe which allows you to get down smaller canals and get closer to the local life, an experience I really recommend.

Hiring a houseboat on the Kerala backwaters is often one of the most expensive things you can do in India but there are lots of different options so even backpackers and budget travellers don’t have to miss out on what is one of India’s most beautiful, peaceful and serene experiences.

Kerala houseboats start at about 2,000 INR per person per night but, as with anything, if you can afford to pay a little more it’s often worth it for better facilities and a better experience.

Not much beats cruising along in your own private houseboat on the Kerala backwaters. Some canals can get quite busy with houseboats in the peak season but the more expensive ones are also more likely to get away from the crowds.

Also, its good to be aware that most boats only offer air-conditioning from 9 PM – 6 AM only and hot water hours may be limited too.

Harmony houseboats are the best houseboats on the Kerala backwaters for budget travellers and backpackers looking out for a pocket-friendly option.

The houseboat is set about 2 km away from the beautiful Mullakkal Rajarajeswari Temple in Alleppey. The on-boat restaurant serves excellent Indian, American and Asian food.

The rooms are well-kept and are better than those of most budget houseboats in the region. The staff are very friendly and will help you make the most of your time on the backwaters.

Budget: Symphony Cruise Houseboat, JCT Dockyard Punnamada, Alleppey

Symphony Cruise Houseboat is consistently ranked amongst the top houseboats on the Kerala backwaters for the superb service and experience they offer. It’s a great option to choose considering the spectacular views that the rooms offer.

The houseboats are docked about 2 km away from the Nehru Trophy Boat Race and about 6 km from the Alleppey Lighthouse. The houseboats have a restaurant that serves Indian cuisine so you can relish some exotic delicacies straight from the Kerala kitchens!

The staff can also arrange fishing.  The rooms are air-conditioned and equipped with clean bathrooms. Another bonus is that there is free car parking provided.

Midrange: Friends Cruise, Punnamada Road, Alleppey

Friends Cruise is another recommendation Kerala houseboat. All rooms on the boats are super clean with private bathrooms, fully air-conditioned and are complete with all modern amenities and lake-views.

The houseboat provides great all-inclusive packages to guests so all you need to do is book with them and relax on the deck taking in some of the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets you’d have ever seen!

The restaurant on-boat serves excellent Indian food and they even have some good vegan options too. Friends Cruise is definitely one of the best houseboats on the Kerala backwaters for families and groups who wish to experience the best of Kerala in a mid-priced package.

Without a doubt, amongst all houseboats on the Kerala backwaters, this one has a unique boutique charm. Docked close to the Kumarakom Boat Jetty and the Kumarakom bird sanctuary. The rooms have private bathrooms and are quite spacious (for a houseboat!).

Walk through the corridors and you’ll experience that rustic heritage charm which is well reflected in the wooden decor and the furniture. The houseboats have an on-boat restaurant.

The evening dinner by the waters is an experience to be cherished! You can get in touch with the staff if you wish to enjoy fishing or canoeing in the surrounding waters.

Luxury: Xandari Riverscapes, Pallathuruthy Bridge, Alleppey

Xandari Riverscapes is actually a whole fleet of luxury houseboats on the Kerala backwaters. You can expect the best in class luxury and privacy. The boats feature either one, two or three bedrooms which are all air-conditioned. These are the ones I went on with the Kerala Blog Express!

The deck area is perfect to admire the ever-changing scenic views all around. You can also relax in the open living space or try your hand at cooking in the fully equipped kitchen. The boats are docked close to the Pallathuruthy Bridge.

The staff will happily arrange a canoe ride on the backwaters to experience Kerala’s waters more intimately. The houseboats are also stocked up with amazing indoor games if a laid-back vacation on the water is all you want!
