History & Story

Vrindavan is the abode of the love of Srimati Radharani and Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

The story and lilas of Krishna are known to all, but only in parts and pieces to the majority of masses. I will connect it on basic terms for people who are unaware.

So, as most of you might be knowing, Krishna was born in Mathura and from there, Vasudev Ji (his father) crossed the Yamuna and left the baby Krishna at his friend Nanda Baba's home in Gokul. Krishna was lovingly raised by Nanda Baba and Yashoda Maiya. When He became a bit grown up, He directed the information to Kans that it is nobody other than Him who is destined to kill Kans.

Upon hearing this, evil Kans burned the entire village of Gokul in a hope to burn Krishna, and eventually kill his death. Krishna has already made His plans, and before the army of Kans were about to burn Gokul, Krishna convinced Nanda Baba to go and take shelter at Vrishbanu Baba's village Barsana. It was all a pastime of Krishna to spend time with Srimati Radharani in Barsana and perform His divine lila's to teach the world prema-bhakti and reclaim the conditioned souls to go back home, back to godhead Goloka Vrindavan.

From there, Vrishabhanu Baba gifted the Gokulvasis the holy land of Vrindavan, which became the place where Radharani and Krishna perform the nitya transcendental lilas. Vrindavan attracts all sincere seekers and colours them with the inner confidential love of prema-bhakti that is extremely rare and not even accessible to yogis, siddha saints, tapasvis and even demi-gods like Shiva Ji and Brahma Ji.

How to travel cheaply and conveniently in Vrindavan?

• The most preferred mode of commute in Vrindavan is e-rickshaws . They are cheap, eco-friendly and zoom in any small lanes of Vraj quickly . They will charge around 10-40 rupees unless very far.
• Do not give them any amount above 60-70 bucks for any place as once they sense that you are coming for the first time, they will quote big astronomical amounts.

Bike for rent in Vrindavan

If you are just a couple of people, or in multiples of 2, you can rent a bike from Srila Prabhupada Emporium at Hare Krishna Residency, just near to the Bonraj Maharaj College and on the adjacent side of Main Gate of ISKCON Temple. They will take a security deposit of 1000 rupees, and will charge 500 rupees for Activa scooter and bikes. The advantage you will get is that you can go to any place around Vrindavan easily. Also, you can quickly visit Mathura, Barsana, Govardhan, Radha Kund easily. If you are good with using Google Maps, I would highly advise you to rent a bike or scooter to have a further great experience.

Though, please note that there are some instances of bike theft in Vrindavan, hence make sure that you park it securely or at parking only. Don't leave the bike at any random place for a longer period of time.

Must-do activities in Vrindavan

I would highly suggest any devotee or tourist coming to Vrindavan to make sure to participate in the below mentioned devotional activities.

Though every step in Vrindavan destroys sins of thousands of lifetimes and also bestows the result of 100 Ashwamedha Yagyas, what Rasika Vaishnavas teach is to be a seeker of vraja-prema bhakti .

Yamuna Boat Ride

Visit Kesi Ghat and take a boat ride. There are many boats there and they usually charge an arbitrary amount once they get a feel that you are a tourist so do not forget to negotiate with them. The ideal price would be 150 or 200 bucks for a 20-30 minute ride duration. It is a wonderful experience to witness the ghat from the waters of Yamuna Maharani as Keshi Ghat retains that traditional vintage vibe. If possible, do take Yamuna Snan or take achman if you are unable to take snan (bath).

Kirtan at ISKCON

There is a fully charged up enthusiastic kirtan at ISKCON Krishna Balarama Mandir 24 hours a day. It has been going on since 1986. It was re-established by Sripad Aindra Prabhu . You just step inside the temple hall and automatically get engaged in the Harinam Sankirtana. This is the final conclusion of all Vedic Scriptures. Harer Nama Eva Kevalam i.e. in Kali Yuga, there is nothing except Harinam for the deliverance of fallen conditioned souls.

Banke Bihari Darshan

The darshan at Banke Bihari Mandir is a tad different as the curtain opens and closes every alternate 10-30 seconds. The deities of Banke Bihari Ji just create a powerful impression on the viewer. You will witness a different experience here.

Yamuna Arti

Evening arti at Keshi Ghat on banks of Yamuna Maharani is flocked by devotees worldwide. There is a grand arti and you just get engaged in the festivities there. It starts at 5.30 and sometimes at 6 PM. Though, be careful not to wear spectacles there as monkeys can snatch it very easily. Also, be aware not to speak to anyone local or dicey here and do keep your mobile and wallet safe.

Chant Hare Krishna Mahamantra internally

While in Vrindavan, keep chanting Hare Krishna Hare Krishna | Krishna Krishna Hare Hare | Hare Rama Hare Rama | Rama Rama Hare Hare on your lips. You can get a bead and bead bag for 50-100 rupees anywhere in Vrindavan and keep chanting here. Krishna and Srimati Radharani become pleased with anybody who chants the holy names. Taking 1 nama (name) of Krishna in Vrindavan gives the result of taking Krishna's name 1000 times. Vrindavan Parikrama

A lot of devotees do Vrindavan Parikrama around Vrindavan (Parikrama means walking around in circle i.e starting and ending at the same place). It is a 13 KM walk around the circumference of Vrindavan Dham. By circumambulating Vrindavan once, you get the result of circumambulating all the temples in Vrindavan. It is said that all offences are destroyed by doing Vrindavan Parikrama.

One should keep chanting Hare Krishna Mahamantra while doing Vrindavan Parikrama and keep praying for a direction to vraja-prema-bhakti . A lot of devotees do parikrama on Ekadashi.

The natural scenic beauty on the 13 KM path is something that will linger in your memory for a long time and will make you very blissful internally. A good part of Vrindavan Parikrama route is untouched by modern buildings and retains that traditional feel with lots of greenery, peacocks, cows and parrots around.

Special Festivals celebrated in Vrindavan

Holi is celebrated with a lot of vigour and excitement. It is popularly celebrated at Banke Bihari Mandir, Radha Ramana Mandir, Radha Vallabha Mandir and around Loi Bazar with more enthusiasm. Thought the entire 13 KM parikrama marg is full of colours and it is no less than a film set. You love being here. It is one of the highlights of Vrindavan and devotees worldwide come here to attend Holi.

Janmashtami

Janmashtami sees a huge rush of pilgrims, and especially from nearby regions of Delhi and Rajashtan. All the mandirs are decorated no less than royal palaces and there is an extreme amount of fervours, glitz and euphoria surrounding the festivities of Janmashtami. A lot of religious ceremonies including kirtan, prasad distribution, yagyas happens at every other corner in Vrindavan. It is a joy to be here in Janmashtami and visit the temples here.

Radhastami is celebrated with more enthusiasm than Janamashtami as it is the appearance day of Queen of Vrindavan, Srimati Radharani, the personification of love of Sri Krishna. Everywhere, you see a lot of happiness, pujas and big feasts going on.

Kartik (every year)

Kartik usually falls from mid-October and mid-November every year. Kartik is also known as Damodar Mas. It is the month of Radharani and it bestows 1000 times more bhakti than any normal time of the year. This Kartik period is when Vrindavan is crowded to the core and it is almost impossible to find hotels for overnight stay. Thousands of devotees visit here on a daily basis and it is full of buzz and super high enthusiasm during Kartik. One must make it a point to come to Vrindavan every Kartik regardless of anything. it bestows thousands of times spiritual credits and sincere seekers really get direction and answers quickly in the quest of vraja-prema bhakti .

Important festivals celebrated in Kartik are Sharad Purnima, Radha Kund Appearance Day, Govardhan Puja, Diwali, Damodar Lila, Tulsi Vivah etc.

Purusottam (every 2.5 years)

Purusottam, also know as mal mas is considered as the top-most month to leave all work and just meditate on the Purustoamm Lord, or Sri Krishna with full heart and soul. It bestows 100000 times the benefit of doing bhakti on any other day. Thousands of devotees do Vrindavan Parikrama every day during Purusottam Maas. Even stepping for just a few hours in Vridnvaan during Pusursottam bestows results of millions of lifetimes of bhakti and it can be immediately felt internally by the sincere devotees.

Radha Kund and Shyam Kund are considered as the two eyes of Govardhan Hill, which is shaped like a peacock (You can just search Govardhan Hill on Google Maps and see the shape of Govardhan Mountain which resembles a peacock from the top).

The popular Govardhan Hill, also known as Giriraj Ji is located 22 KM from Vrindavan. A lof devotees perform the 21 KM Govardhan parikrama on feet, which usually takes 4-8 hours. It is a very pleasurable and nice experience to sit approaching Giriraj Ji and chanting your mala here.

Gokul is at a distance of 20 KM from Vrindavan. It is the place where Krishna spent his early childhood in Yashoda Maiya and Nanda Baba's care. The place where Krishna showed the entire brahmanda (universe) in his mouth to Yashoda Maiya is located here. It was in Gokul that Krishna used to steal butter along with His sakha friends from Yashoda Maiya and gopis kitchen.

Bhandirvan is located 21 KM from Vrindavan and is the place where Radharani and Krishna got married. Though this marriage was not in front of the entire world and was extremely confidential. Vamshivat is hardly 5-minute drive from the main temple at Bhandirvan.

Raval is about 20 KM from Vrindavan and is the place where Radharani was born. The main mandir is very less visited by and the darshan of little Radharani is a treat for the devotees. Also, there is a garden just opposite the main temple where two trees are together wrapped in each other, one being black and the other being white in colour. Locals say that the white tree represents Radharani and the black one depicts Krishna.

Nandgaon is located at a distance of 48 KM from Vrindavan. It about 6 KM from Barsana. Krishna lived here after the Gokulvasis came to take shelter at Barsana as Gokul was burnt by Kans. It was all a plan by Krishna so as to arrange meetings with Radharani regularly. Later, Vrisbhanu Baba gifted the land of Vrindavan to Gokulvasis to establish their new village.

Vrindavan was just a Van or forest once upon a time. Indian scriptures mention 12 forests in Braj Bhoomi and Vrindavan was one of them. It was a forest on the banks of Yamuna where Sri Krishna played with the Gopikas of this land. This is where he stole their clothes on the Cheer Ghat. Close by, he also killed the Kaliya Naga.

This is the forest where he did Ras Leela. If you believe, he still does it every night at NidhiVan – another small forest in the city.

Brief History of Vrindavan

Vrindavan literally means the forest of Tulsi or holy basil. A legend says there was a Gopika or Sakhi of Sri Krishna named Vrinda.

Mirabai, the 16th CE poet from Merta and Mewar, also spent considerable time in this place. A temple dedicated to her commemorates that. However, her end came at Bet Dwarka near Dwarka in Gujarat.

During the reign of Aurangzeb, temples in this region came under attack. Imagine a place between Delhi and Agra, both of which were Mughal capitals, full of Hindu temples. Many temples were destroyed and the main deities were transferred elsewhere.

The holy town is full of temples. You can not visit all of them unless you start living there. Most pilgrims visit the temple they or their Gurus are associated with along with some famous or popular temples.

Sri Banke Bihari Mandir – The most famous temple

Sri Banke Bihari Temple is the most popular and hence the most crowded of the temples of the holy town. Anytime you go, it would be full of people. The Murti of Banke Bihari here was found in Nidhivan close by Swami Haridas. A temple was built in 18th CE around the Murti. His personal temple can be seen in the lane outside this temple.

It is believed that the Radha and Krishna exist together in this Murti. A unique aspect of this temple is that it opens around 9 AM or later. There are no morning rituals or Mangala Sewa like normal temples.

The temple is built like Haveli with an open courtyard in the middle. This is where you stand and take darshan. A lovely Kamadhenu in brass with a calf can be seen on a pillar.

You must eat the Makhan Misri prasad of this temple. It is Yum. The only other temple that offers it is Dwarkadheesh Temple in Dwarka .

This temple is also a popular venue for playing Holi, although it is played in all temples here, Mathura, and Braj Bhumi. For more information, check the temple website .

Govind Dev Mandir

This must have been a magnificent temple of 16th CE built by Raja Man Singh of Jaipur. In red sandstone, this was once a seven-story temple, of which the top 3-4 stories were broken by Aurangzeb. Even without its Shikhara, the temple is huge. One can only imagine how beautiful it would have looked when intact. It stands out because of its red color, as you move through the lanes full of small shops towards it.

The deity was moved to Jaipur when the temple was attacked in 18th CE. This is the same Vigraha that is now worshiped 7 times a day in the royal temple of Govind Dev Ji in Jaipur.

Sri Rangnathji Mandir – South Indian Temple

This temple will immediately transport you to Tamil Nadu with its tall and colorful Gopurams. Built in mid-19th CE, this temple tells us about the coming together of devotees of Sri Krishna from all over India. Inside the temple premises, you are literally ported to south India with the architecture. Gopurams though have local architecture with Jharokhas and ornate parapets.

The temple celebrates the Car festival like they do in South India. The priests here too are as rude as they are in Tamil Nadu.

It was built by the 3 wealthy Seths of Mathura – Lakshmichand Seth, Radhakrishna Seth, and Govinddas Seth.

Sri Radha Vallabh Mandir

This temple was built by the founder of the Sri Radhavallabh Sampradaya Goswami, Harivansh Mahaprabhu who is regarded as the incarnation of Lord Krishna’s flute. The temple was one of the most lively temples I visited, where live music was being played. People were dancing and Holi was being played.

In the sanctum, there is a Murti of Krishna playing the flute while Radha is present only through her Crown or Mukut. Is this not a unique aspect of this temple?

Sri Madan Mohan Temple

Built-in red sandstone like many medieval buildings of this region, this tall temple stands on a hill called Dwadashaditya Teela next to Kalidah Ghat. You have to take a flight of stairs to reach the temple. It was built by one of the Seth from Multan. The original deity was moved to a safe place in Rajasthan, and a replica of it is now worshipped.

The main temple is narrow and tall. There is a smaller temple on the side and a huge mandap or hall also in red sandstone but as a separate building not attached to the temple.

Sri Radha Raman Mandir

A lovely 16th CE temple that was built by Gopal Bhatta Goswami, who had come here with 7 Shilas or Shaligrams (stones found in the Gandaki river of Nepal, considered a form of Vishnu). He used to worship them every day and cover them with a wicker basket at night. One day morning when he removed the basket one of the stones had manifested itself into a beautiful Murti of Krishna. This is the same Murti that is worshipped in the temple.

Due to it being self-manifested, it is considered a living Murti. Radha Raman literally the Love of Radha which is none other than Krishna. Read more on the temple website .

Radha Damodar Temple

This is also a 16th CE temple built by Goswami Srila Jiva who received the Murtis of this temple from his uncle Srila Rupa Goswami. This temple too was moved from here to Jaipur. But it was brought back here in 18th CE. One of the few temples that got back to their original places.

The temple is famous for Giriraj Charan Shila or a rock from Giriraj hill with an imprint of the foot of Sri Krishna. It also has a footprint of a cow.  Read more on the temple website .

Garud Govind Temple

This temple is located in Chhatikara, next to Garud Govind Kund. The reason this temple is special is as the main deity here is riding a Garuda. It is not a common thing to see Vishnu riding Garuda. To see the Vigraha, you will have to request the priest to show you, else it remains hidden beneath the Shringar.

A smaller temple in the complex houses a stone murti of Garuda in a seated pose with folded hands. To me, this looks like a Murti that was on top of a pillar, but there was no one who could ascertain this.

Bankhandi Mahadev Temple

This is an ancient Shiva temple located in the lanes of the main market of the town. It is believed to be the place where Srila Sanatan Goswami was blessed by Shiva. There is a huge Kali Murti in the temple. Radha Krishna is, of course, present in every temple in the holy town.

Vanshi Vat and Gopeshwar Mahadev Mandir

Vanshivat is the place where Sri Krishna played flute on Sharad Purnima. It is said that Radha and all other Gopikas left their work and ran to this place when they heard the flute playing. They refused to go back and became a part of the Ras Lila of Krishna.

On the same premises is a small Shiva temple dedicated to Shiva called Gopeshwar Mahadev Temple. It is believed that Shiva too came here in the form of a Gopika to take part in Ras Lila. When Krishna saw him, he called him Gopeshwar instead of his usual name Yogeshwar.

Katyayani Devi Mandir

This is a temple dedicated to the Katyayani form of Devi. I am told Navaratri is celebrated with a lot of festivities here. There is an Ashtdhatu or an 8 metal Murti of Devi in the temple. I remember I was too scared to take pictures as there were a lot of monkeys here. The priest came with a stick and said, I am with you take the pictures. Joys of being in a happy place.

ISKCON Vrindavan – Krishna Balaram Temple

ISKCON temples are the most well-maintained Hindu temples, though their following majorly is non-Indian. Here the temple built in 1975 CE celebrates both the brothers of the land – Krishna and Balaram.

ISKCON also has an Akshaya Patra unit in the town with a facility for the pilgrims to live. The last time I saw their kitchen, which cooks mid-day meals for thousands of children every day. It is fascinating how they cook healthy and hygienic meals using steam primarily and a lot of automation.

Prem Mandir

This is the youngest but very popular temple in the town. When I visited it a few years ago, it was still being built in white marble. Built by Kripalu Maharaj, this has two sanctums. One dedicated to Radha Krishna and the other to Sita Ram. It is a huge temple in white marble, punctuated with colorful images of Radha Krishna. The temple also venerates various saints of the Vaishnava sect.

Vaishno Devi Temple

This is a fairly new temple with a giant Murti of Durga sitting on her lion. Below her in a cave is the Vigraha of 9 forms of Devi.

Places to visit in Vrindavan

There are many things besides temples that you can visit and enjoy in this holy town.

A sacred forest where you can take a walk and visit the temple dedicated to Radha. The temple is full of bangles and other Shringar items. It is believed that Radha and Krishna still meet here every night. In the evening the priest prepares the bed for them in a palace called Rang Mahal and then leaves. No one is allowed to stay inside after it’s dark. There are stories of people who insisted and stayed and were found dead in the morning.

The premises of Nidhi Van also have Samadhi of poet and musician Swami Haridas. Believed to be an incarnation of Lalita Sakhi, this is the place where he used to do his sadhana or the practice. Tansen, the musician in Akbar’s court came here to meet Swami Haridas. Some of his poetry is carved in stone here.

Murti of Sri Banke Bihari temple mentioned above was found in this Nidhi Van.

As you walk around, you find a temple dedicated to Kunj Bihari. Lalita Kund is a small stepwell in Nidhi Van. Sindoor or vermilion is offered to many trees making them look like a bride wearing red clothes.

There is a lovely temple reminding the visitor of the event when Sri Krishna killed Kaliya Nag here. This is next to the Kaliyadeh ghat of Yamuna. There is a small old temple along with a modern-day interpretation of the event in red sandstone.

A Kadamba tree stands next to it. It is believed that when the Kaliya Nag poisoned the waters of Yamuna, this was the only tree that managed to survive. Today it is worshipped as the wish-fulfilling tree.

Like Nidhivan, this was also a forest probably called Nikunj. This is also a spot identified with the venue of Ras Lila.

Vrindavan Shodh Sansthan Museum

There is a beautiful museum on the premises of Vrindavan Shodh Sansthan. You can see local art forms, the depiction of Radha Krishna in various mediums, and a lot of manuscripts. There are lovely paintings, illustrated manuscripts, artifacts like an old flute from Banke Bihari Temple, and a description of various festivals of Braj.

I would recommend spending some time at this museum to understand the place through its art. You can also buy research books at the museum shop.

Khandelwal Granthalay

This is a book shop full of books on Braj including the history of Braj and a lovely compilation of Hori songs that are sung in the temples of Braj. I love visiting the local book shops like these which still operate in a pretty much old-world way. It is a pleasure to speak to the owners who know everything about every book they have in the shop. They will ask you what you are looking for and simply pull out the perfect book for you. Even if they do not have the book, they will tell you where you can get it.

Boat Ride on the Yamuna

You can spend some time on the ghats of the Yamuna here. Boat rides are also enjoyable if the weather permits.

Vrindavan Parikrama

The Parikrama can be done any day, any time. You can start it from anywhere but you must finish at the spot you start it. Many people do this on Ekadashi. It is recommended that you chant while walking so that you remain focused on the purpose of walking. Some people also keep fast for doing parikrama, but it is really a choice and not something that is prescribed.

Walking is easy, even if you walk barefoot as is recommended.

Festivals of Vrindavan Temples

• In Braj they say – 7 Vaar, 9 Tyohaar meaning there are 7 days in a week and 9 festivals to be celebrated in Braj. Every day is a festival in a place that was once playground of Krishna in his childhood days.
• Holi is the biggest festival that attracts tourists to Braj. Read our detailed post on – Holi in Mathura Vrindavan.
• Krishna Janamashtami or the birth of Krishna is the biggest festival in the town. It is followed by Radhaashtmi – the birth of Radha that comes 15 days after Janamashtami.
• Every Ekadashi or the 11th day of every fortnight is a festival in the temples here.
• Very local festivals include things like Kans Vadh Mela to celebrate the killing of Kamsa. Others include Lathhe ka Mela and Rath ka Mela.
• Kavi Sammelan or poetry meets are a norm in Braj. If you understand Braj Boli or the language of Braj, it is a delight to listen to the recitation of poems.
• Parikramas happen throughout the year.

Must Eat Food

Mathura Ke Pede is the favorite offering in the temples of Mathura Vrindavan. You must try these. Read our story of the making of Mathura Peda.

Kachori is my favorite thing to eat in Braj Bhumi, followed by Bedai Puri which you get only in the mornings.

Lassi is a famous drink that you must try here, followed by Jal Jeera which is mostly seen in summers.

Monkey Menace

Monkeys can play havoc on your sojourn here. They are found in each temple, each street, and even on the ghats. They will attack you for anything. But their favorites are – mobile phones, cameras, spectacles, and hanging bags. In the lanes of Banke Bihari temple, I saw them jumping on passers-by wearing spectacles, taking them off, and breaking them, just for fun. It is nearly impossible to walk with any eatable in your hands.

Some of them are addicted to Frooti and will return your stuff only if you buy them a packet of Frooti.

I was attacked by monkeys at Radha Vallabh temple when one snatched my camera and the other my sling bag almost choking me. Although you find monkeys everywhere in Braj Bhumi, be it Mathura, Govardhan, Barsana, or Gokul but nowhere else are they so rowdy as they are in Vrindavan.

Be aware of this when you step out in the town.

How to visit Vrindavan?

• It is located 10 KM north of Mathura, 50 KM from Agra, and 150 KM from Delhi. If you drive down from Delhi, you first get this place and then Mathura. They are almost like twin towns now.
• It is well connected by both road and train. The nearest airport is New Delhi.
• E-Rickshaw is the best way to explore the place. Unless you are willing to walk its pilgrim routes stated above.
• There are many hotels of all ranges available in the town. People also stay at ashrams like the one provided by the ISKCON temple.

India is really one of the perfect destinations for traveling. The post has made me personally interested in India. The cultural, historical, and architectural diversity of this country is worth to explore. Did the monkey took your camera away or you managed to snatch it back? If the monkey had taken the camera then it must have become a wildlife photographer till now.

I managed to have my camera with me as it was wrapped around my wrist. They are more fond of spectacles and fruit juices.

Govind Deo Temple

Govind Deo Temple, one of the most visiting places in Vrindavan locates 1 kilometer away from the railway station and also popularly known as Govind Dev Ji temple. It is one of the most significant tourist temptations in the town. In the year 1590, Raja Man Sing (king of Amber) constructed this temple.

The construction of this temple is unique as it is an amalgamation of the Western, Hindu, and Muslim styles. This large temple is made of red sandstone and follows the Greek cross sign. The temple ascends to seven stories and is devoted to the love of Govind, another name of Lord Krishna. 

In the year 1670, the Govind Deo Temple was attacked by the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb and for which the temple is only 3-storied now. The vast majority of the temple activities such as petition and puja happens at a littler temple (arranged behind the fundamental temple) because of the serious decimation, 

A stairwell will lead you to the primary corridor and the roof decorates with a lotus totally hand etched. The internal sanctum of this temple is made of marble and silver. During the festivals of Holi and Janamashtami, the temple witnesses significant footfalls.

Visiting hours:   Govind Deo temple opens every day from morning 8:30 am to noon at 12.30 pm and again open from 4:00 pm and close at 8.30 pm.

Prem Mandir

Prem Mandir, also known as Temple of love is one of the largest temples to visit in the Vrindavan and dedicated to the glorification of Goddess Radha and Lord Krishna. This temple is comparatively new and established in the year 2001. From the year 2012, tourists can visit this religious temple. According to local people, this temple circulates over a sprawling 55 acres of land.  

Prem Mandir, made of marble and has a two-storied pattern. Apart from this, the temple walls are trimmed with an amazing painting depicting the Leela of Lord Krishna and Goddess Radha. More than eighty-two panels on the temple wall are hand-painted. The internal sanctum of the temple houses the divinities Krishna and Radha on the ground floor while the principal floor shows the deity of Lord Ram and Goddess Sita. 

A large garden with lots of flowering plants and lights covers the entire temple. Apart from this, there are also vast statues of the Goddess and Gods in the garden. Moreover, every evening, the temple organizes a light show. 

Visiting hours:   the visiting hours of this temple are every day from 5:00 am to 12:30 pm and again from 4:00 pm to 8:30 pm.

Kesi Ghat, known as one of the most essential ghats located at the banks of the Yamuna. Every morning, tourists visit this spot. According to Mythology, after killing the demon named Keshi, Lord Krishna took a dip into the Yamuna water. Therefore, Kesi Ghat, popularly known as one of the most attractive places to visit in Vrindavan . 

Also, at the back, the large Madanmohan Temple provides an amazing environment. Here, you can even opt for a boat ride.

Visiting hours: Every day from morning 5:30 am to 8:00 pm.

Banke Bihari Temple

Banke Bihari temple is another unique place that is also known as one of seven temples of Thakur of Vrindavan . The temple’s design is Rajasthani with curved windows and brilliantly etched stonework. The idol of Lord Krishna inside the Banke Bihari temple is also unique. The doll depicts the Lord as a youngster remaining in a ‘Tribhanga’ position.

Local people and purohit believe that Lord Krishna doesn’t like the sound of instruments and that’s why the temple has no bells or conch in its premises. Therefore, by their voice, people perform chants of Radha Krishna.

The word Banke means twisted at three spots. On the other hand, Bihari means a pleased soul. At three separate times of the day (Shringar, Rajbhog, and Shayan) – the entire routine of Lord Krishna has been performed. Shringar includes the Lord’s bath and dressing up. Rajbhog means a great meal and the Shayan means God’s rest time.

Visiting hours: Banke Bihari temple opens every day from 7:30 am to 1:30 pm and again from 5:30 pm to 10:00 pm.

Nidhivan is a wonderful vast garden, commonly known as Seva Kung and one of the most visited places in the Vrindavan . This spot is crowded by individuals everywhere throughout the year. The same number of legends are related to this spot. According to some people, Lord Krishna and Goddess Radha performed their Rash Leela in this garden.

Mythology says that, in the dark, Lord Krishna comes in the garden and dances with his Gopis. It is the cause why people do not have permission to enter the Nidhivan garden at night. There are more than 1500 tulsi trees in the garden premises of Nidhivan. 

Visiting hours: Every day from morning 5:00 am till 8:00 pm. 

ISKCON Temple, Vrindavan

ISKCON is one of the most visited temples in Vrindavan as well as in India also. This temple is commonly known as Krishna Balaram mandir. This temple was structured in 1975. The ISKCON temple is put forward with the sole objective of educating people on the Bhagavad Geeta and Vedas.

The inner of the ISKCON temple has three altars for the Radha Shyamsamundar, Balaram Krishna, and Sri Gour Nitai. After entering, an immense white marble opening leads to the samadhi of Swami Prabhupada, the founder of ISKCON.

Also, doors of the temple are vast in size and totally carved from wood. Tourists will be able to listen to the harmonious music of prayers – known as Kirtans. Besides that, the ISKCON temple provides residence at a very low cost. Therefore, if you are planning to stay here for a couple of days, you can visit their official website to book your room.

Visiting hours: ISKCON temple opens at 4:00 am and closes at 8:00 pm. 

Sri Radha Damodar Mandir

Sri Radha Damodar temple is one of the tourist attractions in Vrindavan . This temple is located at the Loi Bazaar, near to the Seva Kunj. Local people say that Guru Srila Jiva Goswami ascertained this Sri Radha Damodar Mandir. The deities worshipped in the temple were blessed to Jiva Goswami by his master, Rupa Goswami. Damodar Mandir was roughly destructed by Aurangzeb, later on, all the idols of the temple shift to Jaipur.

Inside the mandir, there are two prominent divisions. These are Samadhi hall of Rupa Goswami and Bhajankutir or prayer hall. Within the temple premises, Jiva Goswami built a library in order to store the original manuscripts of the Goswamis. 

Though the Damodar mandir lost many of its surprises, still some crucial religious aspects are exciting. For example, the Govardhan Shila (rock) and according to Puran, Lord Krishna’s footprints etched on the rock.

Visiting hours: Sri Radha Damodar Mandir opens every day from morning 6:00 am to 12.00 pm and from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm.

Rangaji Temple

Shri Rang Nath Ji (Rangaji) temple is one of the unique places to visit in Vrindavan . In the year 1851, this temple was established. 

Rangaji temple dedicated to Lord Rangji, known as an incarnation of the Lord Vishnu. The main attraction of this temple is its 50 feets Dhwaja Stambha. Apart from this, beautiful gardens and a water tank are there in the temple premises. 

In March and April, because of the Brahmotsavam Festival, maximum tourists visit the Rangaji temple. 

Visiting hours: Every day from morning 5:30 am till 11:00 am and again from 3:00 pm till 9:00 pm.
