Champagne Afternoon Tea and a Tour of Highgrove Gardens

how to book highgrove garden tour

Before my visit to Highgrove Gardens, I figured I knew what to expect. I’ve visited many of the truly wonderful gardens in the Cotswolds, and I have appreciated the beauty, the natural spaces and being surrounded by the life of a garden. And Highgrove, the private gardens of Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, are all of those things as well, but there is another dimension to them, a quality that is hard to explain.

how to book highgrove garden tour

Words to do the talking

Now, ordinarily, I like to explain myself in images that show the feel and mood of a place through the images I’ve taken during my experience, but as photography is not allowed anywhere on Highgrove for security reasons, words will have to do all the talking this time.

A garden of imagination

So, what is that special quality that sets Highgrove Gardens apart from others? I thought about this as I enjoyed the lovely tour, and I came to the conclusion that the magic of these gardens must be the spirit with which they have been and are being created by HRH The Prince of Wales. You might think that a garden created by a Prince on the grounds of a royal estate would be grander than most, but it isn’t that. These gardens are all created with imagination and passion by the Prince over more than 35 years, and every tree, plant, flower and sculpture in it reflects his deep commitment to sustainability, as well as a natural artistic ability.

Highgrove Gardens are a series of interlinked organic spaces, all havens for a wide variety of flora and fauna and all developed to please the eye and sit in succinct harmony with nature. The presence of HRH The Prince of Wales and his family, his values and his story are all over the gardens, and with the friendly and knowledgeable tour guides sharing stories and anecdotes throughout the tour, you come away feeling that you truly know and understand the story of this magical place.

highgrove-garden-champagne-afternoon-tea-cotswolds-concierge (14)

Expert guides

We were lucky enough to be invited on one of the two-hour tours with an expert guide who walked and talked us through the stories behind the estate, shared with us little stories of how the gardens are used now, how the produce is harvested and turned into products and produce. The sun was shining on the day we visited, and it was a wonderful, warm and dry day.

The perfect finish

At the end of the tour, we were served a delicious and luxurious afternoon tea with champagne in the setting of the lovely Orchard Restaurant, a wonderful experience made even better by the resident pianist providing a delightful musical accompaniment that was the perfect soundtrack to a perfect end to a perfect day.

Champagne Afternoon Tea

Afternoon tea was a delectable selection of sandwiches, cakes, and a glass of lovely Highgrove Champagne. We left full and happy from the afternoon tea and the garden experience, one we will not forget for a very long time.

highgrove-garden-champagne-afternoon-tea-cotswolds-concierge (28)

The gift of no photography

As you enter Highgrove, a sign says, “Beware, you are now entering an old-fashioned establishment”, basically meaning “No phones, no cameras, no photography”. The restriction on photography was incredibly frustrating at first. When you’re used to documenting almost everything you do through photography, it feels almost unnatural to experience something so beautiful and incredibly special and not be able to capture it. Still, what started as frustration quickly turned into appreciation because when you don’t feel the constant need to take pictures, all you’re left with is the experience and at Highgrove, that is a beautiful gift.

The beautiful gift shop

As you leave Highgrove, you do so through the gift shop, a shopping experience on another level. Every item in this shop is linked in some way to the gardens or the HRH The Prince of Wales; everything is quality and luxury, and I dare you to go through and not want to buy at least half the shop.

Do note that shopping at the Highgrove Shop can also be experienced in their even larger and equally wonderful shopping destination in Tetbury town centre down the road from the estate, so if you’re not visiting Highgrove on a tour, you can still get a little bit of the experience here.

highgrove-garden-afternoon-tea-cotswolds-concierge (5)

A memorable experience

The Champagne Afternoon Tea Tour at Highgrove Gardens is among the very best experiences I’ve had in the Cotswolds. Whether you’re a garden enthusiast or not, a visit and a tour at Highgrove Gardens is a fantastic experience for you to treat yourself with or as a gift for someone you care about. The Champagne Afternoon Tea Tour cost £79.95 per person or £155 per couple. Gift vouchers are available. Book your own memorable experience on highgrovegardens.com .

With planting season close at hand, green thumbs can take inspiration from none other than the Prince of Wales. For more than 30 years, His Royal Highness has made Highgrove, his Gloucestershire estate, a proving ground for organic gardening and agriculture, yielding lush greenery and robust harvests. The acreage’s enchanting orchards, arbors, flower beds, and meadows are shown year-round in the new book Highgrove: An English Country Garden (Rizzoli, $50), which also includes valuable horticultural insights from both Prince Charles and garden guru Bunny Guinness.

Sunday 19th May

After our morning pick up at the Sheraton Heathrow Hotel at Heathrow Airport, we head to the Royal Horticultural Society’s flagship garden at RHS Wisley . We enjoy a guided tour so you’ll be sure to see the very best of these impressive and extensive gardens, which cover some 240 acres and inspire in any season. We have lunch (included) in the Tulip Room.

In the afternoon we check in to the 4-star Foxhills Hotel . Dinner is in the hotel (included).

Monday 20th May

We begin our day at The Manor at Upton Grey with its garden designed by Gertrude Jekyll in 1908. The current owner spent years researching the garden’s history, then set about restoring it, and it is now considered to be the most complete and authentic Jekyll designed garden still in existence.

We continue to West Green Garden , one of England’s finest manor house gardens created by acclaimed garden designer and Chelsea Flower Show award winner, Marylyn Abbott. We enjoy lunch in the gorgeous garden conservatory (included), time in the gardens and a floral demonstration.

We return to the hotel where your evening is at leisure (dinner independent).

Tuesday 21st May

After checking out, we head to central London to enjoy the first members-only day at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show . Marvel at the magnificent floral displays by the best nurseries and specialist growers in the main pavilion. Be inspired by the extraordinary show gardens created by the leading lights in horticulture and enjoy the extensive array of gardening tools and gifts. There is time for lunch (independent).

Later, we travel to the Cotswolds and check in to the 4-star Close Hotel in Tetbury. Dinner is in the hotel (included).

Wednesday 22nd May

Today, we begin with a visit to Rodmarton Manor , one of the finest Arts & Crafts houses in Britain. It is still owned by the Biddulph family for whom it was built in 1909. We enjoy a private tour of the house followed by time to explore the gardens.

We then return to Tetbury for free time for shopping and lunch (independent). In the afternoon, we visit the Royal Gardens at Highgrove . This is the private home of His Majesty King Charles III and Queen Camilla. It is widely regarded as one of the most innovative gardens in the UK and is managed on the strictest sustainable and organic principles. We enjoy dinner at Highgrove (included).

Please note: Visits to Highgrove are limited and dependent on the King’s diary. Dates are released in early spring each year, therefore it is not possible to guarantee a visit before this time. Our itinerary may be re-ordered to accommodate the visit, or an alternative garden will be included should a visit not be possible.

Thursday 23rd May

We begin the day with a pre-opening visit to Iford Manor , a Grade I Italianate garden designed by the architect and landscape gardener, Harold Peto. The manor house is also famed for its tranquil beauty and romantic setting. We will have a tour of the gardens with the owner.

We then drive through the historic city of Bath to a privately owned house, with award-winning gardens which were designed and developed by Julian and Isabel Bannerman over twenty years. The gardens are truly romantic and a rare treat. We will enjoy a light lunch (included) then take a stroll through the gardens before departure.

We return to the hotel for dinner (included).

Friday 24th May

After a leisurely start, we visit the attractive market town of Cirencester with its Roman heritage and beautiful, 11th century church. There is time for you to explore independently and have lunch.

In the afternoon we visit Througham Court Garden . This extraordinary private garden is inspired by scientific facts and theories, and the numbers and patterns found in nature.

Afterwards, we continue on to Miserden Garden , a delightful Cotswolds garden that was designed, in part, by Edwin Lutyens. After meeting the owner and exploring the garden, we have a private dinner (included) in the Glasshouse Cafe.

Saturday 25th May

This morning we visit a delightful private garden, originally designed by Arne Maynard , with the picturesque River Avon at its heart. We enjoy a final lunch (included) in the garden. In the afternoon we drop off at the Sheraton Heathrow Hotel and Heathrow Airport Terminal 3 for inter-terminal transport links and the Heathrow Express train travel into London.

Note: This tour includes one year’s individual membership of the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). This tour can easily be combined with our Garden Gems of Cornwall, Devon & the Isles of Scilly tour.
