how to fix a leaky travel mug lid

You may have recently purchased a Yeti Rambler Cup with a fancy MagSlider lid believing that it would be completely leak proof.

In an ideal world it would be great to be able to throw your full Yeti cup in your bag and not have to worry about leaks. Or to not have to worry if you or your kids drop it in the car. But are Yeti Rambler cups leak proof and why is yours leaking?

It is normal and expected for both the original Yeti Rambler cup lid as well as the MagSlider lid to leak when tipped over. They are designed to be splash proof to stop splashes when walking or driving over speed bumps, but it is NOT designed to be leak proof.

If you turn it upside down you will get drips and if you leave it sideways in your bag then your bag will fill up with water.

Does The Yeti MagSlider Lid Leak?

how to fix a leaky travel mug lid

You might think that the Yeti MagSlider lid is leak proof giving it has a stopper that slides over the opening, but this is not how the product was designed.

The Yeti MagSlider lid DOES leak when tipped on it's side or upside down. It doesn't have a rubber gasket to stops leaks and it is only designed to stops splashes from the jostling of walking or driving.

In the below Yeti video they state this clearly by saying:

“It's designed to prevent those splashes, so whether you're on the road or hiking and you get some jostling you don't have to worry about splashes. Not designed to be leak proof, so you'll notice if you turn it upside down you'll get a drip or two. “

On their website they also say that MagSlider lids are not leakproof.

Even with the MagSlider™ Lid, Rambler Tumblers are just splash-resistant, which means they’ll keep a drink in its place over a speed bump, but if tipped over in a backpack or jostled in traffic, some liquid will spill out due to pressure releasing inside the tumbler.

You can see this in action in the video below where someone shakes their Yeti tumbler cup with a MagSlider lid and you can see all the liquid pooling in the cap.

Plus you've got lots of other customers all over the internet saying the same thing.

For example see what this Reddit user had to say:

“When you invert (which I did to test) or even just tip it, liquid will spill out from the slid-closed mouthpiece.”

Why Does The Yeti Tumbler Cup Lid Leak?

So it's clear that the Yeti Rambler cup lids do in fact leak, and leak by a fair amount. But why do Yeti Rambler cup lids leak?

Are these products defective or what is it about them that causes them to leak?

I personally like to understand how things work as it helps me use them better and not be frustrated at them.

The reason the Yeti Rambler cup lid leaks even when the MagSlider is closed is because the magslider does NOT have a rubber gasket. So there is no airtight seal to keep water in, so it can find it way between the two bits of plastic.

It is this lack of rubber seal that means there is actually a gap between the magslider and the lid. Water can force its way through this gap and leak out of your Yeti tumbler.

It's not enough water to come gushing out, but it is enough to slowly drip out over time making your bag, car or other surfaces wet when your tumbler cup gets tipped over.

How To Stop Your Yeti Tumbler Cup From Leaking

If you're sick of your Yeti Rambler cup leaking then there are some things you can do to make it 100% leak proof so even if you knock it over or your kids drop it in the car it won't leak.

Here are some ways to stop your Yeti tumbler cup from leaking.

1. Don't Tip It Over

The first and most obvious way to avoid leaking is to always make sure your cup is upright and you aren't tipping it over (except when you're drinking it of course).

Yeti cups don't leak out the bottom so this will stop any leaking.

Obviously we want to stop it leaking even if it does fall over, so lets look at how to do that.

2. Get a Leak-Proof Lid

White Yeti themselves don't make a leak proof lid there are other companies out there that make lids that fit the Yeti Rambler cups.

You can buy these generic branded lids on Amazon for pretty cheap and they don't leak even when tipped over.

So what are the best leak-proof lid options for Yeti Rambler cups?

STOP IT – No Spill Rubber Cover (For Original Yeti Tumbler Lids)

how to fix a leaky travel mug lid

If you have an original Yeti tumbler lid (not the magslider lid) then the STOP IT No Spill Rubber Cover is a piece of rubber that is designed specially for the Yeti Rambler cups.

It first wraps tightly around the top of your cup. You then put the lid on and there is a rubber flap on the stop it that comes over the lid and presses into the sipping hole on the lid.

This both helps to hold the lid on tight so it won't fall off as well as to plug up the hole so it can't leak.

In my opinion this is the best leak-free option for the Yeti Rambler cups and if you've already got the original lid it's a great option.

However, it's not compatible with the MagSlider lid, which is a big downside and it's also not compatible with other brands like RTIC or generic brands from Amazon.

If you don't have the original Yeti lid you can always buy that + the STOP IT but it's up to you if you want to spend that much.

100% Spill Proof Lid

The other option is this 100% spill proof lid that fits onto the Yeti Rambler cups and won't leak out any water.

The one with the flip cap is the best in my opinion and it uses a piece of rubber plus a tight clip to plug the drinking spout so no water will leak out even when it's tipped on the side.

3. Upgrade To a Bottle

If you haven't purchased a Yeti Rambler cup yet and you're looking for something similar to these cups that will keep ice for 24+ hours or keep drinks hot for 12+ hours but you're also looking for something 100% leak proof then you should consider a Yeti bottle.

The Yeti bottles have screw top lids that also have rubber gaskets.

These lids won't pop off and they won't leak any water or drink out either. So you can throw them in your bag, drop them on the floor or lie them down and never have to worry about any leaks at all.

Yeti 12 oz Bottle With HotShot Cap

how to fix a leaky travel mug lid

Yeti have a 12 oz bottle with a HotShot Cap which is primarily designed for coffee drinkers but it also works great for drinking any sort of liquid.

I really like the lid design. It completely closes making it lid proof and then a half turn in the inside cap opens up the lid and allows your drink to easily flow out in any direction.

Yeti 18/26/36 oz Bottles with Chug Cap

If you're after something a little bit bigger then the 18, 26 and 36 oz bottles with the chug cap are closer in size to the 20 + 30 oz Yeti Tumblers.

How to Safely Clean Your Gross Travel Mug Lid

Ditch the dishwasher and use these simple solutions instead.

It seems I collect to-go mugs; bonafide, for-the-car containers to keep hot beverages hot at school functions, as gifts, and at the store when mine start to smell bad or stop working properly.

Most travel-mug lids have a rubbery seal made of polypropylene, a food-safe plastic that has a high tolerance for heat—including the type of heat it receives in the top rack of a dishwasher. Many travel mug manufacturers’ product care guidelines recommend top-rack dishwashing as the safest and best way to clean their lids. Not all lids, however, are created equally. Some are made of other, less durable material.

If you’ve had (and dishwashed) a travel mug for any length of time, you’ve probably noticed that the seal begins to break down or warp. Your hot beverage doesn’t stay so hot, and the potential for leaks increases. You might also notice a funky smell. That’s because old coffee and bacteria can hide in all those grooves—more bacteria, in fact, than what’s in a dog bowl. Oh, and not to mention, your travel mug lid can actually grow mold.

So while these mugs are great for the environment, they’re not so hot for our health. Follow these steps to keep your gasket and lid in tip-top shape:

How to Clean Your Travel Mug

  • Always rinse out the lid (and mug) with warm water after every use. Open and close all the parts while running the lid under the tap. If you’re like me, however, and you end up forgetting your mug in the car (and it sits in there all day and/or night), then read on.
  • Take apart any pieces of the lid that you can. Soak them and the lid in warm dish-soapy water for 10 minutes. This will help soften and loosen whatever may be clinging to the lid. If the lid has an open/close mechanism, set it to “open.” Avoid cleansers or anything chlorine-based, but if your lid is particularly stinky, you can soak it in a warm water-baking soda solution for a couple hours instead.
  • Rinse under warm water, opening and closing the seal to ensure all the soap gets washed away. For very complicated lids, consider using a bottle or spout brush, clean toothbrush, cotton swab, or pipe cleaner to get at all those hidden places.
  • For the occasional deep clean, put 1 teaspoon baking soda in the mug and add ½ cup distilled white vinegar. (This is a great science experiment for the kiddos, too!) After the bubbles settle down, cap the mug, leaving the drinking spout open but covered with your thumb or finger, and shake it. Be warned, as this will really agitate those bubbles. Pour it out, then follow steps 1-3.
  • Allow the lid to dry completely, separately from the mug.

Travel mugs are reusable mugs that allow you to make your favorite hot beverages at home and easily take them with you on-the-go. While travel mugs can both save you money and help reduce coffee cup waste, the materials they’re made of can be a bit tricky to clean. To remove residue and keep your travel mug sanitized, you can soak and scrub the mug parts with a dish soap solution or wash it with a baking soda and vinegar solution. To keep your travel mug clean between hand washes, you can rinse it after each use, do a quick vinegar soak, or run it through the dishwasher.

Using a Dish Soap Solution

Step 1 Take off the lid and remove the rubber seal, if possible.

  • In some cases, the rubber seal is permanently attached to the mug’s lid. If this is the case, leave the lid as is.
  • Dish soap is gentle on travel mug materials and won’t deteriorate the rubber seal. Since most travel mugs are made from stainless steel, dish soap will easily clean the stains up.
  • Avoid using any chlorine-based cleaning products, as these can start to break down the rubber seal.

Step 3 Soak the mug, lid, and rubber seal in the soapy water for 10 minutes.

  • Giving them time to soak will help soften and loosen any residue or germs.
  • Make sure that the toothbrush or bottle brush is clean and sanitized before using it to scrub your travel mug.

Step 5 Rinse all the mug, lid, and rubber seal with warm water.

  • If your travel mug lid has a drink opening, open and close the top to make sure the you wash off all the soap.

Step 6 Let the travel mug pieces air dry completely.

  • Replacing the lid before the mug is dry can trap moisture inside, which will allow bacteria to grow.
  • If you want to use your mug right after cleaning it, you can dry it with a clean paper towel or microfiber cloth. [7] X Research source
  • Repeat this process after every use if possible, or at least every other use.
  • If there are still stains remaining, add equal amounts of baking soda and salt. Let it sit in the mug for about 15 minutes before rinsing and wiping it clean.

Sanitizing with Baking Soda and Vinegar

  • Once you add the vinegar, the mixture will bubble up quite a bit. Wait for the bubbles to settle down for a few seconds before moving on to the next step. [9] X Research source
  • Make sure that the bubbles have settled down before replacing the lid. If it’s still bubbling up, the mixture could react and explode, leaving you with a mess.
  • If your mug has a drinking spout and you want to ensure it gets sanitized, you can leave the spout open and cover it tightly with your thumb while you shake. [12] X Research source

Step 4 Rinse the mug with warm water.

  • If the mug lid has a drinking opening, rinse it in both the open and closed positions to make sure you wash the dish soap out of the crevices. [14] X Research source

Step 6 Let your travel mug air dry completely before using it.

  • If possible, sanitize your travel mug after every use, or at least every other use.

Keeping Travel Mugs Clean Between Hand Washes

Step 1 Rinse your travel mug and lid with warm water after every use.

  • Allowing the bacteria to fester will not only make your mug harder to clean, it can also make you sick. Therefore, it’s important to rinse your mug after every use. [17] X Research source

Step 3 Run the mug and lid through the dishwasher if it’s dishwasher safe.

  • Many travel mugs have a rubber seal made of polypropylene, which has a high tolerance for heat. Therefore, these can generally withstand the heat of the dishwasher. To be on the safe side, however, it’s best to place it on the top rack since the top gets less hot than the bottom. [20] X Research source
  • Even if your travel mug is dishwasher safe, the high heat will likely start to deteriorate the rubber seal over time. Therefore, only run your travel mug through the dishwasher about once per week, and stop putting it in the dishwasher if the mug starts to leak.

Best leak-proof travel mugs for hot and cold beverages

A ttempting to sip on a leaky cup of coffee is a humbling experience. Drippage and staining are inevitable - not ideal on the hectic morning commute.

Carrying reusable cups and mugs should be a simple solution, and reduces waste as you enjoy your morning brew. Some coffee shops even offer discounts for doing so. But, let’s face it, many of these vessels simply do not work as well as they should.

We’re not quite sure what the paper-plastic Pret coffee cups have that sustainable travel-friendly options don’t, but the latter are rarely trustworthy, especially when wearing white.

Thankfully, the new boom of water bottles (credit to Stanley) which has been zealously pioneered by TikTokkers has brought about a renewed interest in portable travel mugs. This means more colours, more designs and crucially, less leakage.

Brands including Nespresso, Chilly’s and Thermos have produced travel mugs for caffeine-fuelled days that don’t run the risk of ruining your outfit. Whether taking one with you on a long car journey or braving the bustling tube, you can rest easy knowing your cuppa isn’t ending up on you or the poor person next to you.

Given that Brits drink approximately 100 million cups of coffee per day , the potential for spillage is high. Ensure every single drop of Joe stays firmly inside its container by investing in one of the best leak-proof travel mugs below.

There's Mold Hiding in Your Travel Tumbler Lid — Here's Exactly How to Clean It Before You Get Sick

When was the last time you hand washed your YETI mug? Exactly.

Yeti Tumbler Mold

We've been independently researching and testing products for over 120 years. If you buy through our links, we may earn a commission. Learn more about our review process.

In fact, many travel mugs have removable seals to trap in heat or cold — and if they aren't properly cleaned and dried, these seals also trap moisture. Mold, which is a type of fungus, flourishes in moist, dark areas. Yep, that means with every sip of coffee, you're probably also drinking mold if your lid hasn't been properly cleaned.

After hearing that this was causing people to get sick, Veronica Lucas took a closer look at her travel mug and discovered tons of mold hidden underneath the lid's removable seal. She shared photos to Facebook, and the post went viral with 16,000 likes and more than 2,000 comments.

Veronica's not alone. In October 2018, Dr. Beau Pierce , a sports chiropractor based in Santa Maria, California, posted a now-viral video titled "A Yeti Style Cup Almost Killed My Patient." In the video, he explains how one of his patients mentioned how he was struggling to beat an ongoing sickness. After asking a series of questions, Dr. Beau noticed his patient's tumbler sitting on the counter and upon taking a closer look, discovered mold hidden underneath the lid.

It's a bit extreme to say that a tumbler was killing his patient, but the connection between a moldy lid and sickness is very likely. Consuming mold, at any degree, isn't good for your health. "Some molds cause allergic reactions and respiratory problems. And a few molds, in the right conditions, produce 'mycotoxins,' poisonous substances that can make you sick," according to the USDA .

While the YETI name is being thrown around, this is a common problem with all tumblers that have removable seals, no matter the brand. YETI, however, responded to GoodHousekeeping.com with the following statement:

We take our customer safety very seriously here at YETI and encourage customers to follow all product usage instructions, including proper cleaning of Rambler lids. For a thorough cleaning, we recommend removing the lid gasket and MagSlider, which should both be washed and dried separately before reinstalling. Learn more about how to clean YETI Rambler products here .

On their FAQ page , YETI explains that just sticking it in the dishwasher won't necessarily do the dirty work: "And here's an extra tip to prolong the life of your YETI cup: before it goes in the dishwasher, remove the rubber lid gasket to prevent any grime build up in the lid. Then throw it in the silverware basket." So, there. The solution has been in front of our faces all along.

To prevent mold, Carolyn Forte , Director of the Home Appliances and Cleaning Products Labs at the Good Housekeeping Institute , recommends that you scrub any areas that the dishwasher can't reach. "To get rid of all the residue and resulting mold, you should totally disassemble the tumbler and scrub all the pieces by hand in hot, soapy water to be sure they are clean," she explains. "These cups and thermal carafes have removable seals for a reason."

Her top tip: Stick it in the dishwasher before you wash it by hand. "While the dishwasher is great, it can’t do everything, and it can’t clean under these seals. In fact, water from the dishwasher can actually get trapped in there, which causes mold to grow." No, thanks!

To be clear: We're not telling you to ditch your tumblers altogether. This is simply a friendly reminder to give your reusable to-go cups a regular deep clean.

How Are Travel Mugs Made Leak-Proof?

how to fix a leaky travel mug lid

Many people would say that travel mugs are the best thing since ice cubes and sugar sachets happened to beverages – but they often leak and spill your drink where it shouldn’t be. Nevertheless, some travel mugs are leak-proof. How are they made that way, what materials are used, and what should I look out for in my travel mug, then?

Leak-proof travel mugs have a vacuum insulated lid that locks on top of the cup, stopping liquid from leaking out of the travel mug if the seal is broken while on the move. These mugs are also made of solid materials resistant to damage, which stop liquids from seeping out through any cracks.

Read on to learn precisely how travel mugs are made leak-proof. We’ll discuss what to look for in a leak-proof travel mug and why you should consider buying one. Not only that, but we’ll also give some valuable tips for keeping your travel mug in good shape.

How Travel Mugs Can Be Leak Proof

A vacuum insulated lid.

Vacuum insulated lids create an airtight seal when they’re attached to the cup – and if something’s airtight, it is watertight too.

This seal is made with a rubber gasket built into the lid. This gasket compresses when you attach the top to the cup, and it expands once you let go , filling the gap between the cup and the lid and making an airtight seal. This way, no air, and no liquid can escape.

With a vacuum insulated lid, you can shake or bump your drink as much as you want. It won’t spill or leak. The rubber gasket should keep your drink safely inside the mug as long as the cover is on tightly.

Lids like these can come in a variety of styles , too, depending on your preference. You can find screw-on lids, bottle caps, and snap-on lids, all with rubber gaskets. Although it’s rarer, you might be able to find a handle-cap with a gasket too.

A vacuum insulated lid means you can’t have a cover with a permanent opening in it since that would break the airtight seal. It would also make the cap vulnerable to spilling if it was tipped over – so no straws or coffee cup-style travel mugs here.

The Lid Locks Automatically

Another way travel mugs are made leak proof by having a lid that auto-locks when you close it. Some travel mugs have a cap that screws onto the cup but can be slid open.

If you’re looking to get a mug like this, get one with a lid that slides back into place automatically once you’re done drinking – an auto seal lid. Otherwise, even if your lid seals tightly, you might forget to close the top, and you could spill your drink.

It’s even better if the lid locks with an auto seal too, so it can’t be jostled open in your car or backpack while you’re moving around. Thumb slides and press buttons both have this feature.

We don’t mean putting a padlock on your mug here – that wouldn’t fit, anyway – but do go for a travel mug that gives a little resistance when you try to slide the lid open or one you must twist to open. That way, it can’t be opened accidentally.

how to fix a leaky travel mug lid

The Travel Mug is Durable Overall

A third reason travel mugs leak is that the materials making up the body of the cup and lid have been damaged. If they’re cracked, the liquid will start to leak out sooner or later.

Not only that, but if your drink doesn’t have a vacuum-tight seal, then it won’t insulate hot beverages properly either. Ingesting the insulation material can be dangerous too.

Therefore, it’s best to get a durable travel mug. If you’re worried about leakage, avoid glass and ceramic mugs. These materials are breakable, whereas plastic and metal mugs are not. Those are less likely to crack if dropped or degrade over time.

The Benefits of a Leak Proof Travel Mug

The primary benefit of a leak-proof travel mug is, of course, that it doesn’t leak. Not only does this keep your drink inside the cup for you to enjoy, but it also means that it can’t spill and stain anything. Coffee stains are hard to remove – trust us.

Another benefit of leak-proof travel mugs is that they keep your drink insulated for more extended periods. If your cup allows air to flow in and out, convection will bring your drink to room temperature faster than if the seal was airtight.

Leak-proof travel mugs are also an investment. While a high-quality mug will cost more, it will also last longer and be more versatile. You can take it camping, on road trips, and even to the office or the subway.

What Happens If My Leak Proof Mug Starts Leaking?

Unfortunately, if your leak-proof travel mug starts leaking, it isn’t leak-proof anymore . The obvious aside, this problem typically means that something has broken inside your cup.

Maybe attach the lid properly or shut it after putting it on the cup, though. Check that first. If that’s the problem, then don’t worry.

However, if the lid is correctly attached and the mug is still leaking, you have a real problem. It is possible that the inside of your cup is cracked or the rubber gasket is torn or worn out.

These things often happen when you put your travel mug in a dishwasher – most are hand wash only for a reason, and they’ll warn you on the packaging too.

Nevertheless, the best idea is to replace the mug. The seals and materials from which quality travel mugs are made are complex for the average person to repair correctly. Because, of course, a travel mug must be food safe.

Although it might cost you, replacing a broken travel mug is more straightforward, healthier, convenient than fixing it yourself.

What Else Should I Consider when Buying a Travel Mug?

Apart from being leak-proof, a good travel mug should also keep your drink at a stable temperature for at least a few hours. Otherwise, you might as well have brought your drink along in a water bottle.

Not only that but if you drive a lot, look out for a mug that fits in standard-sized cupholders as well. Even though a leak-proof travel mug won’t spill if you set it down on the floor of the car or in the glovebox, it’s a lot more practical to have your drink on hand for those long traffic jams.

Getting a dishwasher-safe travel mug would be wise too. Many travel mugs are difficult to clean by hand, so having one that’s easy to clean is a huge plus.

To summarize, leak-proof travel mugs have vacuum insulated lids that fit with an airtight seal on top of the cup. It’s best if a leak-proof travel mug has an auto seal that locks, so it can’t be jostled open accidentally. Of course, durability is essential, too – a leak-proof travel mug should be made from solid materials that won’t crack or wear out.

Hydro Flask All Around Tumbler

The 20-ounce version of Hydro Flask’s All Around Tumbler has been my go-to lately, both at home and on the commute to work. It has the type of lid that you can push back and forth to open or close, and the opening is wide enough to easily fit a reusable straw. I don’t drive, but the mug's size seems very cupholder-friendly, too! — Madison Flager, senior commerce editor

Stojo collapsible travel cup, 16-ounce

The main reason I adore my collapsible Stojo cup is its clever design that makes it incredibly easy to carry around. I’m not kidding when I say that when folded down, my 16-ounce cup turns into a disc that fits into my jacket pocket. It’s also light enough to drop into a travel backpack or a sling bag when you go hiking. I use mine for everything from coffees and smoothies, and when dry, for snacks and berries. Don’t expect an insulated mug with this one: It keeps a beverage warm (or cool) for long enough for you to drink it, but isn’t a double-walled metal cup. However, it has helped me cut down on a ton of waste when traveling, and might I add is cute-looking, too. — Arati Menon, global digital director

Stanley Aerolight Transit bottle

The AeroLight Transit bottle has become my new favorite mug to use on my morning commute to work. My tea is still piping hot even after my hour-long train ride. I keep it in my tote bag—along with my laptop and phone—and it never leaks. I've flipped this one completely upside down and nothing spills out, making it a reliable option to travel with. Yeti Rambler stackable mug

When I'm traveling, the most essential ritual I preserve is my morning coffee. While I love nearly all of the Yeti drinkware options, this mug is perfect for coffee—both for its manageable 10-ounce size, as well as the side handle, which makes this especially easy when I'm on a road trip or a train. (This mug has come with me on camping trips in the Shenandoah Valley and Delaware Water Gap, on a road trip through the Appalachian Highlands, and a long drive between D.C. and New York City .) A fair word of warning though: The airtight lid and insulation work almost too well—coffee stays hot a long time, so I recommend you get it close to your ideal temperature before pouring it in. —Corina Quinn, former city guides director

Snow Peak Milk bottle

This is one of those gifts I have become deeply attached to—it was given to me about a year ago, when I was getting really into camping and the chic outdoor brand Snow Peak, and it’s since become a staple in my house. It has a beautifully minimalist design, is small enough to feel really portable (as in, it’s not a pain to have to tote home once it’s empty), and it never leaks. Zojirushi stainless steel mug

“This mug is my favorite one ever because the lid has a lock feature that makes it completely leak-free. I can throw this in a travel tote and not worry about coffee dribbling all over. Plus the stainless steel interior keeps coffee extra hot for hours, but it doesn't burn your hands. In addition to my commute on the subway, I've taken this little wonder on train rides to upstate New York , and I've never spilled a drop.” —Jessica Puckett, senior editor, transportation and travel news

Martina Thornhill Okay cup

It’s not hyperbole to state that I’ve tried the lion’s share of travel mugs on the market. I drink a ton of coffee and I travel and drive a lot. I hate the way metal mugs make coffee taste—it’s so much better out of a ceramic mug. The Okay Cup from Portland, Oregon –based ceramicist Marina Thornhill is gorgeous, doesn’t leak, and doesn’t make your coffee taste like mud. It’s pricey, but a better long-term deal than always dumping the coffee you put in another mug and don’t actually drink. It’s constantly selling out, so put your name on the pre-order list—it’s worth the wait. —Rebecca Misner, senior features editor

(And that’s a good thing in my book.) I prefer the matte exterior over the stainless steel for its added grip. I use it to commute with my tea (it doesn’t leak!) and on extra-long winter walks because I know it’ll stay warm the entire time. —Meredith Carey, former travel bookings editor

Yeti Rambler lowball

This mug is a thing in my house. My partner received one as a Christmas gift , only to find it missing every morning—truth be told, after I stole it once to use for hot coffee on my morning subway commute, I couldn’t go back to any other thermos. I personally love that this mug doesn’t have a handle, because it’s so insulated it never burns my hands, yet the coffee inside stays piping hot, and its shape is nice and easy to hold. When I’m done enjoying my hot drink on the go, it takes the least space possible in my bag , where it usually clangs around for the rest of the day until I make my way home (or back to wherever I’m staying). —M.S.

A leak proof drinks holder does exactly what it says on the tin - protects you from leakages and keeps your drink intact. Our leak proof travel mugs have a durable, long-lasting finish that won’t scrape off like paint, or sweat and create slippery condensation that will slip out of your grip.

On top of helping you to actually hold onto your drink more easily, the leak proof lid also ensures that if it does slip out of your grip or slide around in the car, your drink will stay in the cup. Its double wall vacuum insulation has been designed to minimise any splashing and ensure that it is entirely leak proof so that it can sit in your bag or car without hassle.

What is the difference between leak proof and spill proof?

Spill proof might refer to the way that a mug minimises spillages, which isn’t always the best way to judge how effective a travel mug is. Spill proof mugs might refer to how easy the mug or cup is to hold, and how well it balances etc. as opposed to how leak proof the travel mug is.

Leak proof travel mugs on the other hand are completely sealed so that your drink doesn’t leak or spill anywhere.

Why do travel mugs often leak?

Travel mugs often leak because they do not come with a vacuum insulated lid that seals the top of the cup. This means that although the travel mug looks closed, when you travel it can leak liquid which becomes very annoying.

Another reason they can leak is due to cracks appearing in the plastic, if the material isn’t very durable. With Greens Steel leak proof travel mugs you will be drinking from a tritan plastic shatterproof lid that is extremely durable so the plastic won’t crack and cause your drink to leak all over you.

If you find that your travel mug is having these kinds of leak issues, it's recommended to get a new one ASAP . Leaky travel mugs can even be quite dangerous if you’re using one whilst driving and find that it is leaking coffee all over you.
