I have been waiting to see this band for at least 10 years. I was so excited! My husband and I have been listening to them for years. We were skeptical of the setlist we found online, worried that we wouldn’t get to hear enough of their early songs, but we were very pleased! They played a really good mix of our favorite hits and some new songs that we and the crowd seemed to enjoy. We really enjoyed the show because they sounded great, awesome venue, great light show and ambiance, and the set list. They have such a unique sound. Overall, we were really happy and had a great time. My only complaint is the ridiculous fees that Ticketmaster and live nation charge! Otherwise the ticket price was more than reasonable. I would see them again for sure!

Disappointing ! This could have been a great concert by an excellent band in a beautiful venue - but unfortunately Interpol played a very short set, just 1 hr 10 minutes. Obviously the entirety of "Turn On The Bright Lights" was a given (since it was the 15th anniversary celebration of the album), but I expected several additional songs and they only played 3 titles as an encore. I have seen similar "celebration of album x" gigs by QOTSA, Jesus & Mary Chain and Peter Hook in the past and they all have been much, much more generous with their time (playing 6-10 songs on top of the celebrated album). Being a headlining band with 5 albums of material to choose from and playing less than 90 minutes is just scroogy, doesn't make the paying audience feel appreciated. Hell, their festival sets were longer than their headlining show - what's up with that !?!

Interpol were note perfect and Turn on the Bright Lights is one of the best albums in the last 50 years hands down but Alexandra Palace is simply a terrible venue for live music. It's not designed to be and it shows.

Because the floor is flat (unlike Brixton / Hammersmith Academy etc) you simply don't see anything unless you are 6'6". Therefore you don't really see the band and therefore can't really connect with them and what they are trying to do.. I wasn't the only one.. I saw scores of people who gave up and sat in the food area instead and heard a guy on the phone talking to his wife describing it as soulless and I couldn't agree more. I love the band and cannot blame them, they did nothing wrong but I will never go to another gig at Ally Pally again unless the ghost of Freddie Mercury rises for a one night only special there... Sorry Ally Pally but you are a rubbish music venue..

Interpol in Mexico City

Interpol performs at the Zócalo in Mexico City on April 20th, 2024.

Interpol has performed in Mexico City many times over the years, but this time felt special. “It was a very beautiful culmination of that long relationship that we’ve had, bringing it to the present,” Banks says. “This is a real monument to the relationship we have with Mexico, and hopefully there’ll be more to come.”

The moody, romantic feel of Interpol’s music encourages fans to express themselves to the fullest.

Mariachi Fiesta de Mexico, a local group, began the show with a surprise opening set that included some classic mariachi standards and a cover of Interpol’s 2004 hit “Evil” that got the crowd cheering. (The group played it twice.)

“Mariachi is something that people really embrace in Mexico,” Banks says. “I had a feeling that that would go over well with the fans, and from what I can gauge, people loved it.”

One fan brought headbands showing photos of Interpol’s three core members: Banks, guitarist Daniel Kessler, and drummer Sam Fogarino. (Fogarino was absent from this show, as he is recovering from surgery.)

Banks exchanges a backstage high-five with Water From Your Eyes vocalist Rachel Brown. “I heard Rachel from side of stage cracking jokes and being their authentic self,” Banks says. “They have incredible poise. That’s quite incredible, that they were so calm as to be witty and charming in the way that I’ve seen them be in very small venues.”

Other fans came in T-shirts celebrating the Zócalo show. The 57,600-square-meter space is one of the largest public squares in the world.

“The audience had a very chill energy,” Banks says. “They were all there to have a good time.”

Kessler and Banks backstage before the show.

The night at the Zócalo brought back memories of their past concerts in Mexico, going back to 2005. “From day one of Interpol playing down there, we’ve always had these crazy shows,” Banks recalls. “Our first show there had to get canceled because it looked like the floor was going to collapse. We had to stop it halfway through because the fans were hitting a resonant frequency with the floor and it was just undulating in a wave. Our tour manager had to walk out and be like, ‘We can’t do this. The building’s going to come down.'”

Water From Your Eyes took the stage after sundown, playing impish, avant-garde bangers like “Buy My Product” and “Barley.”

“That was just fucking awesome,” Banks says. “We love that band. It’s not really mainstream, it’s challenging. But I had a hunch that the fans were going to get it — because even if you’re really left to center, if it’s good and it’s real and it’s passionate and it’s authentic, I think it’s going to translate. And they did.”

Speaking from the stage in fluent Spanish, Banks told the crowd that Mexico City feels like the band’s second home, adding in English, “We love you.”

“Some of my most important relationships and friendships came from my time in Mexico,” he tells Rolling Stone . “And to this day I have some very dear friends there.”

Water From Your Eyes’ Rachel Brown tells Rolling Stone that the whole show felt surreal: “I feel like the only moment of clarity I had throughout the entire set was looking out into the crowd during our last song and seeing people waving their flashlights in the air and thinking about beautiful it looked, and how I was going to have to tap Nate on the shoulder as soon as he finished his guitar solo stuff so that he could look up to see it too.”

The Zócalo was completely packed with fans.

Aside from a warmup show in Mexico City two days earlier, this was Interpol’s first performance of 2024.

Interpol’s set was heavy on fan favorites like “Say Hello to the Angels,” “Obstacle 1,” and “PDA.”

A final moment before taking the stage.

The Zócalo is in a part of the city whose history goes back centuries. “It was the center of Aztec culture as well, before it was the town center of Mexico City,” Banks says. “That does give it a really crazy historic gravitas for me.”

Interpol performs at the Zócalo in Mexico City on April 20th, 2024.

“I felt very at ease, very comfortable,” Banks reflects. “It’s like when you’re on an airplane, you don’t really look down and have a fear of heights, because you can’t process what you’re even seeing. When it’s a sea of people like that, it’s just too mind-blowing. There’s no preset on how to process that in our evolution, so it’s generally not that daunting for me. Whereas if I had to stand up at a wedding and make a joke or give a toast, I would have far more anxiety.”

“There were couple of really special moments,” Banks says. “Like in ‘NYC,’ when everyone seemed to impromptu take out their phone lights — that was really one of the most striking things I’ve seen in our career, the sea of white lights like stars, as far as I could see.”

Interpol performs at the Zócalo in Mexico City on April 20th, 2024.

“I had a blast,” Banks says. “It really couldn’t have gone better. You just hope that things come together when it’s that big of an event. You hope that you feel good, and the audience is feeling good and the weather’s nice, and all of those things came to be and it was great.”

They closed with a three-song encore of “Untitled,” “No I in Threesome,” and “Stella Was a Diver and She Was Always Down.”

“I feel like as a 20-year marker, it was really profound and special,” Banks says. “I felt very fortunate and blessed cosmically, because I find that one is not always 100 percent in control of how one feels in their inner monologue, in their inner climate. But that day, I just felt very lucky.”

The Smashing Pumpkins Announce Tour With Interpol and Stone Temple Pilots

By Matthew Strauss

Paul Banks Billy Corgan Jeff Gutt and Dean DeLeo

The Smashing Pumpkins have announced a North American tour in support of their new album, Atum . The band’s The World Is a Vampire Tour will feature support from Interpol , Stone Temple Pilots , and Rival Sons. Find the Smashing Pumpkins’ tour dates below.

In a statement about the tour, the Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan said:

I grew up in a world where I needed to know bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees and the Cure existed, it meant there was a place for people like me to hang out and belong. That’s what The World Is a Vampire is about. Bringing back that sense of community. If you don't fit in, you belong here. It's about having a shared experience and respecting others, but ultimately having fun. A true alternative festival, where all the self-proclaimed weirdos and outsiders of the world can get together and have a party.

The band’s tour title, of course, gets its name from the opening line on the Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness song “ Bullet With Butterfly Wings .” The Smashing Pumpkins have said that Atum —out May 5—is a sequel to Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness and also 2000’s Machina/Machine of God . Hear a new Atum song, “Spellbinding,” below.

Stone Temple Pilots shared their latest album, Perdida , in 2020. The record The band features original members Dean DeLeo, Robert DeLeo, and Eric Kretz with vocalist Jeff Gutt, who took over after the deaths of singers Scott Weiland and Chester Bennington .

Interpol released The Other Side of Make-Believe last year.

The record cemented the band’s success after the seminal debut ‘Turn On The Bright Lights’ and went on to become a classic of the era. It led to the band signing to a major label for the mainstream success of their third album ‘Our Love To Admire’.

The band will play the album in full for six shows in the UK in November, but before that, they will now play some European shows to celebrate the album’s 20th anniversary. The tour will kick off in Stockholm on October 19 before moving on to Copenhagen the following night and will finish with two shows in Amsterdam on October 29 and 30.

Pre-sale will begin at 10am CEST on April 24 exclusively through The Big House community. General sale will open on Friday (April 26), also at 10am.

The band’s drummer Sam Fogarino recently confirmed that he will not be joining the band on the road “for the time being” after having spinal surgery, which includes the ‘Antics’ anniversary dates.

The band also  played ‘Antics’ in full at a special gig in Paris  last year, months ahead of the 19th anniversary of that album. The show took place at the Philharmonie de Paris and saw the band air ‘A Time To Be So Small’ for the first time since 2007.

Speaking to  NME  recently , guitarist Daniel Kessler explained: “We did  two shows in France where we played ‘Antics’ in full  [last year], and it’s been really strange. It’s nerve-wracking at first.”

He continued: “It might not seem that much of a stretch for a band to play an album in sequence, but it really is. It’s sequenced for the record in a very intentional way, but performing it as such means going from first gear to fourth gear and vice versa.

“When we did those two shows, it really took some activating and getting used to – regardless of how many times you’ve played those songs before.”

Additionally, Interpol are set to to open for  Smashing Pumpkins  in Europe this summer. “We did some shows with them last year and they were a lot of fun,” Kessler told  NME .

“We really try to feel it out each night per situation. I saw Smashing Pumpkins play when I was in high school, so it’s really great to be playing with them.”

Meanwhile, the band played  the biggest show of their career at the weekend before a crowd of over 150,000 people. The New York band graced the huge Zócalo square in the city centre for the free show,  which they had first announced earlier this month .

Local Concert Updates: Interpol, Goose, Daryl Hall, & more

Among the newly announced concerts this week, Interpol will tour in 2022 and include a return to its New York origins. The band will headline two concerts at the Kings Theatre, on May 15 and 16. Tycho and Matthew Dear will be the support acts. “We’re heading back out on tour this year,” the band posted on social media. “It’s been way too long, and we’re very excited to play some shows!”

Goose added a second show at Radio City Music Hall on June 24 in addition to the already-announced June 25 concert. The band announced the news in a brief video on social media. “Thank you guys so much,” the band posted as the caption. “This is a dream come true!!!”

Daryl Hall will embark on his first solo tour in a decade from April 1 to 16. The tour will include a return to his hometown with a show at the Met Philadelphia on April 9. The routing includes a performance at Carnegie Hall on April 14. The tour will support the release of Hall’s first-ever solo retrospective, Beforeafter , on April 1. The two-disc set spans all five solo albums plus never-released recordings from his Live from Daryl’s House web/television series. Todd Rundgren, who performs with Hall on one of the album’s tracks, will be the support act on all of Hall’s tour dates.

Pigeons Playing Ping Pong announced on January 25 its new tour dates on the East Coast this spring to coincide with the release of its sixth studio album, Perspective . Tauk will share the billing at Terminal 5 on April 9. Pigeons Playing Ping Pong will release the album on April 8, the day before the local show.

STRFKR, announced its newly rescheduled tour dates on January 26. The band will perform at Brooklyn Steel on July 19. The Undercover Dream Lovers and Das Kope will be the support acts at that show.

Newly Postponed and Canceled Concerts

The Fugees 2022 tour is canceled. In 2021, the Fugees announced a reunion and performed its first concert in 15 years on September 22 for Global Citizen at the Rooftop at Pier 17. A tour was booked for November and then postponed, with the Prudential Center concert moving from September 23 to March 12. “We anticipate and understand disappointment but our anniversary tour will not be able to happen,” the Fugees announced on social media. “The continued Covid pandemic has made touring conditions difficult, and we want to make sure we keep our fans and ourselves healthy and safe. An idea sparked to honor and celebrate this 25th anniversary of The Score but we see now it may not currently be our time for revisiting this past work. We’re grateful for the special night we did get to share with some of you in New York, with that rare live moment. If opportunity, public safety, and scheduling allow, we hope to be able to revisit this again sometime soon. THANK YOU For all your love and support throughout the years.”

Geoff Tate canceled his January 25 concert at Sony Hall eight hours before show time. “Due to illness (not COVID), tonight’s Geoff Tate show is postponed to June 15, 2022,” read the announcement online. “All tickets will be honored for the new date.”

Reigning Sound announced that the band would cancel its tour, which included a show at Brooklyn Made on March 15. The band’s Greg Cartwright explained that “Due to the recent surge of Omicron cases in the US, we are canceling the Reigning Sound spring tour dates. This was a hard decision to make. Reigning Sound and our touring partners, the Country Westerns and the Okmoniks, have been looking forward to these shows for nearly a year. We remain hopeful that Covid infection rates will decrease in the coming months. Perhaps we’ll be able to reschedule these shows sooner than later. Until then, we hope that you and your loved ones remain healthy.”

The Weather Station has postponed the beginning of its tour until February 12. The January 28 date with Sam Amidon at the Music Hall of Williamsburg is postponed until a later date to be determined. Other concerts appear to be canceled, with no new date available at press time include Erasure at Radio City Music Hall, the Dodos and Anna Fox Rochinski at the Knitting Factory, the Black Angels and the Vacant Lot at Brooklyn Steel, and Peter Wolf & the Midnight Travelers at City Winery NYC. The following shows were recently rescheduled.

  • Hoodcelebrityy at the Gramercy Theatre, from January 23 to April 3
  • Jake Xerxes Fussell, Allegra Krieger at the Knitting Factory, from January 26 to January 30
  • James McMurtry at Brooklyn Made, from January 26 to June 23

Former Gov. David Paterson — a Columbia University graduate — said he is supporting the Jewish community amid anti-Israel protests at his alma mater — not least because Jewish people supported Martin Luther King Jr.’s fight for civil rights.

“They deserve some kind of support … Back in the ’60s when Martin Luther King was marching on Washington, and he was fighting for civil rights, and he was challenging many of the segregation policies that still exist in this country, you would’ve thought that he was a terrorist the way they referred to him,” Paterson said on WABC 770 AM radio’s The Cats Roundtable Sunday.

He added: “Sixty five percent of the whites who marched with Dr. King were Jewish … They deserve somebody to stand with them [today]. I’m happy to do it,” Paterson said.

Paterson acknowledged the humanitarian crisis for Palestinians in Gaza as Israel’s military tries to root out the Hamas terrorists in response for the October 7th attack.

However, he told WABC host John Catsimatidis that the horrific attack on southern Israel that killed 1,200 people remains the root of the conflict.

But he added that the Palestinians partly brought the problem on themselves by electing Hamas as their ruling government in Gaza.

“The Palestinians voted for Hamas to actually run in a sense the government in that particular area. This a government whose stated purpose is to destroy the State of Israel,” Paterson said.

“How much clearer can you get that they are the enemy,” he said.

He said the protests now are more divisive, hostile and hateful because they pit students against other students, and he claimed that they appear to be organized by off-campus radicals.

“Outside agitators are always waiting to get involved in these situations. They did it so quickly this time that I am very suspicious about where all of this is coming from. There is a kind of an anarchist flavor to what’s going on these days,” the ex-governor, a Democrat, said.

Leaders of a 1968 protest, including Bishop James Shannon, Rabbi Abraham Heschel, Dr. Martin Luther King, and Rabbi Maurice Eisendrath, holding flags at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Arlington Cemetery.

Paterson also said the Ivy League presidents seemed to be caught-flat footed, and haven’t helped their cause by appearing wooden during testimony on the strife during congressional hearings.

“When you go to these hearings, show some humanity. Show some emotion about what happened [on your campus] … Don’t sit there like you’re at a house closing … That’s where they got in a lot of trouble,” Paterson said.

Disastrous testimony before House members about campus antisemitism — and the resulting backlash — contributed to the ouster of former Harvard president Claudine Gay and University of Pennsylvania president Liz Magill.

Columbia president Manouche Shafik is now on the hot seat, with Jewish students saying they feel threatened after anti-Israel protesters set up an encampment on the Morningside Height campus.

The Rolling Stones Get Support: Who's Opening for the Hackney Diamonds Tour?

The Rolling Stones are set to launch their North American 2024 Hackney Diamonds Tour this Sunday, April 28 at NRG Stadium in Austin, Texas. For the show opener, the band will have with hometown support from blues guitarist-singer and Grammy winner Gary Clark Jr. But for the rest of the tour, the openers range from Grammy Best New Artist nominees the War and Treaty to L.A. sensations the Linda Lindas.

With 19 shows in 16 cities on the docket, let's look at a cross-section of the artists that will be opening up for, as they once said, "The Greatest Rock and Roll Band in the World."

The Pretty Reckless : Fronted by singer-guitarist Taylor Momsen, the hard rock New York City foursome have been together since 2009. Their latest album, the acoustic-covers-reimagined Other Worlds, was released in November 2022 and they're currently in the studio readying new material. (5/11 – Las Vegas, NV at Allegiant Stadium)

Joe Bonamassa : American blues rock guitarist Bonamassa has been at the forefront of that genre's revitalization since the late 1980s. As a prodigy, he was mentored by the late country rockabilly guitarist Danny Gatton. He opened for B.B. King and by age 18 was in a group called Bloodline with the sons of Miles Davis, Robby Krieger and Berry Oakley. His most recent work can be heard on Mark Knopfler's "Going Home: Theme of the Local Hero" in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust. (5/15 – Seattle, WA at Lumen Field)

The Red Clay Strays : The Mobile, Alabama band's debut album Moment of Truth was released in 2022, and the group has been flying ever since. One can see and hear how this quintet – Brandon Coleman, Drew Nix, Zach Rishel, Andrew Bishop and John Hall – could slot in perfectly on a bill with the Stones, with their blend of rave-up Southern rock mixed with some throwback Muscle Shoals soul. (5/30 – Foxboro, MA @ Gillette Stadium)

Bettye LaVette : A bonafide legend, the 78-year-old LaVette has sung and vocalized and interpreted with just about everyone in the music industry over the past six decades. Betty Jo Haskins, born in Muskegon, Michigan and raised in Detroit, released her first single "My Man – He’s a Loving Man," in the fall of 1962. But her career, while not chart-topping, had a resurgence in the 2000s. Her last release was the Grammy-nominated 2023 LaVette! , a production with the Rolling Stones drummer Steve Jordan. (6/27 – Chicago, IL at Soldier Field)

The complete list of dates are below, and the Stones will also be playing the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival on May 2. There have been no official announcements on when or if the Stones will tour the UK and Europe.

Interpol network renews commitment to protecting victims from global crime threats.

LYON, France – To address the increasing logistical, operational and technological sophistication of transnational organized crime, INTERPOL’s Heads of NCB conference has ended with delegates approving a series of conclusions to boost the law enforcement response.

Expanding access to I-24/7, INTERPOL’s secure global police communications network, to specialized law enforcement units and border control points, and sharing more criminal data via the Organization’s 19 databases were highlighted as key.

Increased use of INTERPOL’s policing capabilities, such as the Global Rapid Intervention of Payments (I-GRIP) stop-payment mechanism to intercept the proceeds of cyber-enabled financial fraud was also endorsed.

Intercepting criminal proceeds

Since the launch of I-GRIP in 2022, the Organization has helped member countries intercept more than USD 500 million in criminal proceeds.

The need for more data exchanges on terrorist organizations, their support mechanisms, and any links to organized crime was underlined, as well as sharing modus operandi linked to chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and improvised explosive materials and incidents.

INTERPOL Secretary General Jürgen Stock said:

“It is simple - more data shared via INTERPOL equals more results for police across our 196 member countries.

“To address the complexity of today’s transnational organized crime threat, global law enforcement cooperation to ensure that the right information is in the right place at the right time is more important than ever.

“This meeting has provided new impetus for our National Central Bureaus which play a critical role in the global security architecture.”

Protecting children

To better protect vulnerable members of society, NCBs were also encouraged to make greater use of INTERPOL’s International Child Sex Exploitation (ICSE) database to share intelligence, identify offenders and safeguard victims, as well as Green Notices to warn about sexual predators.

INTERPOL is the only international organization with a global network of mandatorily appointed data protection officers. In support of data protection principles such as lawfulness, quality, transparency and accountability, fostering this network to further strengthen trust and efficiency in global policing was also endorsed by the Heads of NCBs conference.
