Long Travel Shocks for XJ Questions

  • Add to quote

Hey guys, I've used the best Jeep forum search engine there is here and I can't find the info that I need so I'm resorting to making this thread. I need longer travel shocks for my 4.5 lift on my XJ. It is still a short arm lift btw. I upgraded from a 3 inch but didn't have the cash for the shocks at the time so I kept the 3 inch shocks on there. I finally got the cash up and got referred to Zone Offroad for good riding shocks. So I ordered them. Got them today and they are the same exact size as the 3 inch lift shocks. Zone claims they can run the one size successfully on both lifts with no problems which is why (I found out later) that they have the same part number. Well, needless to say, they are too short. I get no more down travel then my 3 inch RC's. So I had a few questions. 1. Who makes a decently priced long travel shock for a 4.5 inch lift? 2. Can I just run long arm extended travel shocks? If so from who? 3. Can I just run 6.5 inch shocks instead? 4. Has anyone tried Detours shock cheaters and/or rear shock extenders? I'm not so worried about uptravel and compressing the shock too much. I'm bump stopped wayyyyy before that would even happen. My fenders are not cut and I purposely went nuts bump stopping them to make sure they didn't hit. I want more droop while crawling and stuff. I'm getting ready to install my 2nd locker finally in my Jeep and I want as much traction as possible. I loved the way my 3 inch lift flexed out. It actually seems like I get less with the bigger lift because of the shortness of the shocks. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

jeep xj long travel shocks

Most shock makers publish the compressed and extended lengths of their products. Flex your Cherokee and measure, then purchase the shocks that fit your needs. A shock that is too short or too long is a waste of money, you want shocks that fit. Shock extenders are a band-aid solutions and you still end up with the same shock travel length. Go with a quality shock like OME, Doetsch Tech, Bilstein, Fox etc. Cheap shocks (SuperLift, SkyJacker, Zone, Rancho) are cheap for a reason. Short Control Arms can limit your suspension extension as can shocks that are too short. You can use the chart to determine some commonly used shocks and their specifications. Tim, Thank you once again for your knowledge and help. If I used say a Shock Cheater from Detours that was 2 inches. Wouldn't that give me 2 more inches of down travel on the same shock? I'm looking for more down travel not up travel so compression is not a concern. I measured for my shocks with it flexed. I have 26 inches. Now, I have a 1 inch TC drop that is going to be eliminated very soon. I noticed when I disconnected the shock and went full flex the the U-joints on both ends of the front drive shaft were just oh so shy of binding on themselves. So, I'm thinking they might hit when the TC drop is removed since the angles will be greater. The short arms actually flex pretty nice when they are not restricted by the shocks. It sucks because I already purchased the shocks and only need 2 more inches for the proper travel. Just trying to explore my options without killing the bank. Thanks!!!

A 2" shock extender would lower the operating range of the shock, basically removing 2" of up-travel and adding 2' of down-travel. At 5" of lift the front drive shaft will fine. With an SYE, the rear drive shaft will also be OK.

ome long travels are great for flex and on road riding. I have about 4.5 - 5 inches of lift and they give me tons of droop

Are you running a stock drive shaft in the front or did you have to get one custom length for the extra travel? Just trying cover all bases here. Thanks.

Best Shocks for Jeep XJ

Best Shocks for Jeep XJ

I’ve always had a soft spot for the Cherokee. The stock grille and headlights design. The cool, retro looks…We’re talking about a Jeep classic here.

What’s not cool is having suspension problems. Unfortunately, that happens to everyone – especially if you’ve been hitting the offroad paths often.

If your OEM shocks have died out, I have a few recommendations for the best shocks for Jeep XJ:

  • Мid to heavy offroad rides & medium-lift (up to 4”): Bilstein 5100 is the most optimal choice.
  • Improved OEM replacement/stock height : Bilstein 4600 or Rancho RS5000X.
  • Extreme offroad & higher lift Cherokee (4.5”+) : Fox Shocks , Icon, or KING shocks.

As you can see, things heavily depend on a) your driving preferences and b) how much of a lift you want to see with your Cherokee buddy.

Table of Contents

Heavier offroad use and medium lifted Jeep XJ (3.5”)

In this case, there’s nothing more fitting than a set of Bilstein 5100 shocks ( check current prices ). Monotube design paired with digressive valving means you get a better ride and control than any twin-tubes.

Firm (but not too stiff) damping and toughness optimized for offroad performance. Very easy installation too and they come with all the hardware included.

Check this video to see how well they cope with uneven terrain:

I think the 5100 series makes sense for  most  XJ owners who want to play in the dirt and take things off the beaten path. You don’t need to spend too much for Fox, King, Icons, etc. to get a decent, smooth offroad experience.

If you’re looking for some serious Jeep XJ long-travel shocks, however…Nope, not sure they’re going to make it. Either read my thoughts on Fox shocks below or check my comparison between the 5100 series and Bilstein 5160 . The extra reservoir attached to the 5160s makes them better for long travel.

Back to the 5100 series:

If you don’t need a whole set, you can always buy a pair of front or rear shocks – or even single ones .

  • Superior control and a long-lasting shock.
  • Best performing XJ shocks for your typical offroad rides.

Bilstein 5100 Monotube Gas Shock Set (2-3″ Lift)

Improved factory replacement (OEM) shocks for XJ

The fantastic Bilstein 4600 shocks are like a 5100 without the improved offroad performance and lifted vehicle support. Same technology, and a similar approach to shock absorption.

The big difference here is the 4600s aren’t zinc coated for extra protection. Also, they require a stock height XJ – they do not fit with lifted vehicles.

The design is also a bit different – instead of the metallic shine, you’ve got a yellow/blue shock here. Here’s how the rear shock is designed:

bilstein 4600 jeep xj

An advantage is that these will ride smoother on the pavement than 5100s . Ready to conquer any road imperfection and even deal with mild offroad adventures.

I repeat: Do not get them if you plan to mod a lifted Cherokee!

You can check the 4600 front shocks here .

Looking for a budget option?

Well, you have Rough Country, Rancho or random white can shocks. Most of these are twin-tube (less oil capacity, smaller piston, not as long-lasting) though. If you decide to go this route, I think the Rancho RS5000X is the best option.

Best Jeep XJ shocks for extreme offroading & a high lift Cherokee

Things are getting expensive here. However…if you plan on conquering some hardcore offroad paths or want to go full sport drive:

Well, you need something  special .

I’m very partial to Fox shocks , but other high-grade shock absorber options are King or Icon.

Unlike Bilstein or other general brands, Fox shocks are made of aluminum. This helps tremendously with heat dissipation which is the #1 problem you’ll encounter with extreme offroad. Also, standard shocks just don’t have the right valving to cope with ultra-rough terrain.

Fox shocks cover these two bases, but they go beyond:

Not only do they run on nitro (not gas), but they’re also rebuildable/rechargeable.

Throw the enhanced monotube design with additional coating to prevent damage and you have a premium solution.

Additionally, the Fox Performance series can support some monstrous lifts. This set for example goes up to a 8” front lift and 6.5” in the back. It also keeps the slick Fox design, very cool:

fox xj lifted

If you don’t care about extreme roads but want to run a lifted monster you can try Rubicon Express.

Their shocks for higher lift XJ are twin tube and steel-constructed, but they fit 4.5” to 5.5” lifted Jeep XJ snugly. A step above the white can shocks for sure – but don’t expect magical wonders from them in the very long term.

Wait, what about KYB or Skyjacker shocks for a Cherokee?

Can you grab a set of these? Yes, you definitely can.

Should you? I’m not sure.

KYB Monomaxes are more than decent, true. However, as I’ve pointed out in my KYB vs Bilstein comparison , Bilstein’s series simply perform better on 4WD vehicles and in offroad conditions.

I guess if you want an exact OEM replacement for your shocks you can go with them. After all, KYBs are the kings of imitating the performance and feel of factory shock absorbers.

As for the Skyjacker Hydros – I feel that they’re in a bit of a tricky spot. Somewhere between higher-grade white can shocks and Bilstein’s, they make sense until they don’t. Any relevant Bilstein shock or Rancho’s later series will outperform the Hydros. The difference in price doesn’t justify this gap in overall performance and ride control, in my opinion.

Share your experiences with Cherokee shocks – street or sport

I’m curious about your own experiences with different brands that offer shock absorbers for our good old friend, the Jeep XJ.

What setup worked the best for you? Anything you particularly liked (or didn’t like)?

Let me know in the comments below. Always looking to talk more about Jeep stuff and as I said, the XJ holds a special spot in my 4WD-loving heart. 🙂

DUAL RATE-LONG TRAVEL coil springs expand during articulation as suspension droops to keep the tires in contact with the ground much longer than a single rate resulting in a smoother ride while maintaining the coil in the upper coil bucket even at full droop. The 2nd rate (lower coils) only engage after compression past the 1st rate for consistent control and stability during body roll and heavy off-road suspension movement. Kit includes Dual Rate Long Travel Coil Springs, Rear Add A Leafs, Front and Rear Hydro 7000 Shocks.

California Proposition 65

PROPOSITION 65 WARNING EXPLANATION

JKS Manufacturing applies warning labels either on our product(s), the packaging containing our product(s) regarding CA Prop 65. This warning is part of our effort to comply with the California Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 (known as “Proposition 65”). The warning does not mean that our products will necessarily cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. While we believe our products are not harmful when used as designed, and we rely on our suppliers to help with this effort, we also provide these warnings to comply with Proposition 65.

What is California Proposition 65?

Proposition 65 is a far reaching law and applies to any company that operates in California, sells products in California, or manufactures products that may be sold in or brought into California. Proposition 65 requires warnings to accompany any product that contains or may contain any of the chemicals appearing on the list administered by California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA), a part of the California Environmental Protection Agency. The current list can be found here: https://oehha.ca.gov/proposition-65/proposition-65-list

What This Means To You

While the proposition was created to protect drinking water sources from chemical contamination, the scope of the law has expanded over the years. It now includes over 900 chemicals and also pertains to (but is not limited to) exposure through touch, inhalation, ingestion, or skin contact.

The Prop 65 warning can now be found on products that may contain a small amount of over 900 chemicals or ingredients that the OEHHA lists as a carcinogen or reproductive toxicant. This includes compounds that are used in everyday life like vinyl, coatings, plastics, and much more.

Why has JKS Manufacturing decided to provide a warning?

Proposition 65 imposes strict penalties for noncompliance. While California establishes “safe harbor numbers” for listed chemicals, the costs of individually testing products that JKS Manufacturing sells and distributes is prohibitive (particularly when the list of chemicals is so expansive and subject to change on an annual basis).

As a result of the steep penalties and because there is no penalty for providing an unnecessary warning, JKS Manufacturing (like some other companies doing business in California) decided to provide the Proposition 65 notice out of an abundance of caution.

For more information about Proposition 65 we suggest that you visit: http://oehha.ca.gov/prop65/background/p65plain.html

Picking the right coil springs.

JKS J-Rated Suspension Systems feature custom wound, progressive rate coil springs. That means the spring rate increases as the spring is compressed. You and your Jeep enjoy a plush ride during low load driving scenarios such as highway cruising with increased performance as each spring compresses. If you carry a significant amount of extra gear in your Jeep, some J-Rated suspension systems are available with optional high-rate coil springs to support the additional weight.
