After sell-out shows in Sydney and Melbourne back in 2018, Joey Badass returns next year with his highly anticipated Australian Tour 2023 – and fans of the celebrated rapper can expect one helluva live performance.

The Brooklyn native will kick off his four-show tour in Perth, playing Metropolis Fremantle on January 4. This will be followed by concerts in Brisbane on January 6 and Sydney on January 7, before hitting the Forum in Melbourne on January 8, and Northcote Theatre on January 10.

[Review] Joey Bada$$ @ Forum Theatre, Melbourne 08/01/2023

Post Image

Sunday night was a buzz on Flinders Street as hundreds of fans lined up around the block into Hozier lane for New York’s Joey Bada$$ and his epic show at Melbourne’s classic Forum Theatre. Making his grand return to Australia for the first time in a few years, the Brooklyn native is known for his infamous rise to fame in 2012 with his self-released, no major label mixtape 1999 , and a string of fantastic albums to follow, as well as being a co-founder of hip-hop group Pro Era . Releasing 1999 at just 17 years old, he made waves with his lyricism well beyond his age and skill behind the microphone. This tour, the 1999-2000 tour, represents a celebration of 10 years of the debut record, along with promoting the brand-new sequel record, 2000 , released in 2022. The hype was real.

Opening the show was South Sydney rapper, Gomeroi man and master storyteller Kobie Dee. At only 25 years old, Dee covers a lifetime of narrative. Focusing in on his home and community of Maroubra, Kobie Dee highlighted the issues of mental illness, drug abuse and youth suicide, discussing the importance of conversation and removing stigma from the subjects. He took time to pay tribute to lost loved ones, and to celebrate what they stood for. But as well, Kobie Dee brought the party, and brought it hard. Fan favourites such as This Life and Basics were anthems, with the whole crowd bouncing and singing along for the full 30-minute tight set. Kobie Dee represents the future of Aussie conscious hip hop and predicts high hopes for storytelling through music.

Next up was Powers Pleasant. Producer, DJ and Pro Era alumni, Powers brought the bangers. Over the years I have seen a lot of hip hop warmup DJs, but man, this was the hottest 25 minutes of heat I’ve ever seen before a rap set. Powers Pleasant toured us through quick edits of Denzel Curry, Freddie Gibbs, Kid Cudi, Lil Uzi Vert, Kendrick Lamar and even Nirvana with crazy fun transitions to match. The crowd was pretty much on fire by the time the set ended and the main act began.

Joining Powers on stage, Joey Bada$$ hit the stage just before 10pm, opening with the fan favourite and classic track of his debut, Survival Tactics. The classic chant of “Fuck The Police” was cleverly contrasted with the red and blue stage lights, setting the scene for a night of rebellious rap.

Not missing a word except to wave the mic at the audience for their support, Joey blew through classic after classic before addressing the crowd for the first time. Taking his time to bask in the love of the crowd Joey Bada$$ thanked us for our ongoing love and support, told us he was here for the day ones all the way to the new fans, instilling the further duality of the tour title, a reflection on the decade of music and the ongoing relationship with his fans. The connection of conscious rap, politically charged lyricism and a romantic edge penetrated the consciousness of all in the room.

Joey also took his time to pay tribute to hip hop legends we’ve lost in recent years, including King Von, Nipsey Hussle and the ever-controversial XXXTENTACION. Many hip hop shows have a moment such as this, where they look back on those fallen, but Joey’s was more than just a grab at tragedy, but instead a thought provoking moment of pain for friends gone. The ongoing issue of gun violence in the US is not a taboo topic to Joey Bada$$, and often enters his music as he is more than familiar with its sting.

The crowd was bouncing the whole night. It was clear that these fans knew their material, with every song a sing-along, every chorus a chant. The mosh was heavy and hard, but the energy was positive, with those falling being picked up to re-join the party. A perfect blend of love and anger, triumph and pain, joy and rage.

Highlights of the night’s set included Head High, Make Me Feel, Paper Trail$ and the chart-topper TEMPTATION which for me was the best of the show. Joey wasn’t satisfied to end on that track though, and despite the Forum’s strict curfew, he chose to “risk the fine” and play one more song because he’s Joey Fucking Bada$$ , the crowd chanted. Ending the show with the banger DEVESTATED, the fans were left sweaty, messy but satisfied from a night of dope hip-hop and awesome music.

Joey Bada$$ Announces 2023 Australian Tour

He returns to Australia as one of rap music's biggest superstars.

joey badass tour melbourne

American rapper, singer and actor Joey Bada$$  has today announced his long awaited Australian tour, performing down under for the first time in over 5 years.

The Brooklyn native will tour his latest critically acclaimed studio album 2000,  across major capital cities for the first time since a pair of sold out shows in Sydney and Melbourne in 2018.

The shows kick off on Australia's West Coast, performing at Metropolis Fremantle on Wednesday 4 January. He’ll then travel east to Brisbane, playing Fortitude Music Hall on Friday 6 January, Sydney’s Enmore Theatre on Saturday 7 January, and Forum Melbourne on Sunday 8 January.

2000  was the highly anticipated sequel to his breakthrough mixtape 1999  which released 10 years earlier. The title alludes that its only been one long year of growth for Bada$$ between his present commercial success and the time he entered the scene alongside hip hop collective Pro Era.

He released his first official studio album B4.DA.$$  in 2015 before releasing his magnum opus, politically inspired and frustrated record ALL-AMERIKKKAN BADA$$ . Unifying anthems reigned thick of the record, including two hits Devastated  and Temptation  achieving twice Platinum and Gold plaques respectively.

His last tour saw him come to Australia as one of the most exciting names on the Sugar Mountain festival line up, now he returns as one of rap music's biggest superstars.

Joey Bada$$ Announces Australian Tour For January 2023

Joey Bada$$ Announces Australian Tour For January 2023

Chris Singh

As we roll closer to the end of the year, the first few months of 2023 keep coming through with big-ticket Australian tours from some of the world’s most exciting acts. We’ve already got national shows locked in for the likes of Red Hot Chilli Peppers & Post Malone , Elton John , Arctic Monkeys , and Bon Iver , now it seems Brooklyn rapper Joey Bada$$ is adding his name to the fold. The Pro Era rapper, cut from the same cloth as the likes of J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar – who is prepping his own trip down under for the end of this year – will kick off the new year with a Joey Bada$$ Australia tour, spanning four theatre shows across Fremantle, Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne.

His first visit to our sparkling shores in five years, the emcee, known for being one of the most ferocious young emcees to come up in the same era as A$AP Rocky and Danny Brown, will be mostly pushing his third studio album 2000 – released just a few months ago. Although we’re expecting the set list to take a bit of a greatest hits approach, given Joey hasn’t been out for a while, so fans can expect to hear pearlers like ‘No. 99,’ ‘Devastated,’ ‘Christ Conscious,’ and ‘Survival Tactics.’

Released in July, 2000 is the follow-up to Joey’s classic mixtape 1999 which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and has for the past decade been hailed by rap fans as one of the finest examples of a relatively young rapper adding a vital twist to golden-era hip hop without compromising on credibility. The new album, so far well-received by various online reviews, features guest appearances from Westside Gunn, Diddy, Chris Brown, and more.

The Joey Bada$$ Australian tour – backed by Illusive Presents and Frontier Touring – will kick off at Metropolis in Fremantle on Wednesday, January 4th before the emcee heads on over to Brisbane’s Fortitude Music Hall, Sydney’s Enmore Theatre (which will be the tour’s only ‘All Ages’ show) and Melbourne’s Forum.

Joey Bada$$ Australia Tour 2022

Tickets for the Joey Bada$$ Australia tour go on sale to the general public on Friday, September 16th at 12 PM local time. If you want tickets earlier, hit up the Frontier Members presale which starts on Wednesday, September 14th at 10 AM local time.

Awesome show. All the guys in Beast Coast having a lot of fun. Joey Headlined with Flatbush before him, and Under achievers and others opening the show. Joey came out for verses on Beast Coast tracks that were played throughout the show, before coming out as the headliner which was cool. They had these guys hooked up to harnesses flying around the stage. Great time. Mosh Pits, Joey crowd surfing. Couldnt ask for a better show. Pro Era, Joey Badmon and all Beast Coast are always puttin on!

This show was so dope! Buddy, Boogie and Joey are all phenomenal artists snts have a great message!

It was so legit lit, I didn't stop dancing, singing ou're moving the entire concert! The energy was mad hype and I even joined the wild ass "mosh" pit. Lol I'm short so it was scary but fun as hell.

I'd do the entire night, minus the drinks, all over again!

About Joey Bada$$

Joey Bada$$ avatar

If Joey Bada$$ doesn't ring any bells, then you've been missing out on a 90s hip-hop-influenced rapper living in the new millennium. Often compared to a sound similar to Nas and with influences from Tupac or MF DOOM, Joey Bada$$ is not adhering to the new way of rapping and prefers to keep things more fluid and retro. Born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Joey first got his shot at the big stage when he joined Pro Era collective with which he released three mixtapes. With a passion for the indie and alienated sound, Joey Bada$$ released his debut studio album, B4.Da.$$, in 2015, that left a mark on the Billboard charts that year. His passion for everything that's unusual came intro fruition as he began collaborating with bands like Glass Animals and obtrusive groups like Tablo. He's not reinventing the rapping wheel, but he surely brings the fresh hip-hop sound back to where it belongs!
