11 Scenic American Road Trips to Take This Spring

From coastal drives to national parks, these U.S. road trip ideas are perfect for a spring vacation.

june road trip ideas

When the weather warms up and the late winter rains turn trees green and fields into wildflower wonderlands, it’s the perfect time to take a drive.

Whether your preferred landscape is mountains, deserts, forests, plains, or coastal views, there’s a spring road trip in the U.S. for you. Explore historic sites, regional food, wineries, or nature, all from the front seat.

We’ve put together a few suggestions, starting in exciting locales and ending in beautiful destinations, with hundreds of scenic miles in between. We cover national parks, where spring presents the ideal time between summer crowds and winter cold, as well as jaunts through marshes, mountains, and springtime blooms.

There’s flexibility built into these suggested itineraries, with possible extensions if your schedule allows. It’s always a good idea to download your route from Google Maps to use offline or pack a paper map just in case you find yourself out of range.

Pack up the car, and away we go. These are the best American road trips to take this spring.

Joshua Tree National Park, California

Irjaliina Paavonpera/Travel + Leisure

Nothing beats a U.S. national park in the springtime, and that's doubly true on the West Coast. A scenic drive through Joshua Tree National Park could span 50-plus miles if you drive straight through. Plan on spending at least four hours traversing the park, as you’ll want to take detours to enjoy panoramic views, climb massive rock formations, stroll through the cactus garden, marvel at an oasis, and find the perfect Joshua Tree landscape for your souvenir photos.

There are several ways to enter the park, but let’s say you’re starting in Palm Springs. Drive East on I-10 for about an hour to Cottonwood Springs Road (exit 168) and the park’s south entrance. Your first stop will be the visitor center for a map, and then on through the Colorado Desert environment, around sea level. You’ll see ocotillo, with their tall branches tipped by bright red blossoms. Stop at the Cholla Cactus Garden and walk along its paths, but don't get too close to the prickly plants.

Soon you’ll see the “tree” that gave the park its name. Legend has it that early Mormon settlers likened its branches to arms outstretched in prayer, so named it after the biblical figure, Joshua. Take a side trip to the Keys View overlook — with an elevation of around 5,000 feet, it provides a striking panorama of the Coachella Valley. As you wind through the park on its well-paved roads, you’ll notice campsites, tables for unpacking your picnic basket , wildlife, and an increase in elevation to the cooler Mojave Desert environment as you head toward the west entrance off Highway 62 in Joshua Tree Village. The highway meets I-10 — from here, head west toward Los Angeles or east toward the Coachella Valley.

Miami to Key West, Florida

With its abundance of wildlife and beaches, the Florida Keys is one of the best spring break destinations for families and can easily be explored by car. This drive covers about 150 miles, but the timing depends on your stops along the way. Take US-1 south, heading through historic Coconut Grove, past the University of Miami, and along either South Dixie Highway (US-1) or Ronald Reagan Turnpike (toll road). After passing the farms between Homestead and Florida City, continue on US-1 South, which turns into the Overseas Highway . Look for mile marker 126 to help you count down the distance to Key West.

Key Largo will be the northernmost town of the Keys and possibly your first stop. Spend some time at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park , the first undersea park in the country, which offers snorkeling, scuba diving, glass-bottom boat tours, and more.

Islamorada is part of the Middle Keys, a favorite of fishing fans, and a great place to shop for souvenirs. Then, it's onto Marathon Key , a city set on 13 islands, known for loggerhead turtles and its Dolphin Research Center . South of Marathon, US-1 crosses the Seven Mile Bridge which links Marathon with the Lower Keys.

Enjoy the view of the surrounding waters as you drive across the bridge, and look over at the original railroad bridge, severely damaged in 1935’s hurricane season, commemorated in the Hurricane Memorial in Islamorada. On the other side of the bridge, you'll see the palm-fringed beaches of Bahia Honda State Park . You may want to stop and explore the wildlife at the National Key Deer Refuge in Big Pine Key before reaching your destination of Key West. Enjoy the laid-back ambience of this unique town, stroll along Duval Street, or visit the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum .

Shenandoah National Park, Virginia

The wildflowers in Shenandoah National Park are spectacular, making Virginia a worthy spring road trip destination. Skyline Drive takes you 105 miles through the park along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains. About an hour and a half drive from Washington, D.C., this route through nature is the perfect contrast to the capital’s museums and monuments (though the D.C. cherry blossoms are worth a peek, too). Waterfalls, spring flora, hiking trails, wildlife, picnic areas, and 75 scenic overlooks will add hours of enjoyment to your park visit, so take your time on this popular road trip.

Starting at Front Royal on US-340, one of the park’s four entrances , the road climbs to Dickey Ridge (mile 4.6), where the visitor center provides exhibits, maps, and an orientation film. Mileposts on the west side of the road beginning with 0.0 at Front Royal help locate points of interest along the way. They continue to 105 at the southern end of the park at Rockfish Gap. Take your time and stop at the well-marked scenic overlooks, starting with the Shenandoah Valley Overlook at mile 2.8, where you can see the Shenandoah River as it winds through the valley. The Hogback Overlook at mile 20.8 is the longest viewpoint in the park and offers vistas of the Allegheny Mountains on a clear day.

Continue enjoying the panoramic views from the various overlooks, stop for a short hike, or learn more about the park at the Harry F. Byrd, Sr. Visitor Center. It's located at milepost 51 across from Big Meadows, an open area with campgrounds and spring wildflowers. At the Bearfence Mountain parking lot at mile 56.4, hikers can take a trail to the summit for a 360-degree view. Where Skyline Drive ends at Rockfish Gap, the Blue Ridge Parkway , a trip of nearly 500 scenic miles, begins.

Grand Teton National Park to Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, Idaho, and Montana

Although parts of these two national parks are 100 miles apart, it’s possible to visit them both in one trip. You may want to stretch it over a few days, though, to really take your time sightseeing. Grand Teton National Park , at nearly 310,000 acres, is near the Wyoming town of Jackson, with Jackson Hole Airport located within the park at the base of the Teton Mountains. Just north, Yellowstone National Park covers over two million acres, with its famous geysers, mud pots, and hot springs.

Spring in Grand Teton sees the annual wildlife migration, with elk, bison, deer, and moose heading for their summer homes. The park’s mountains, valleys, forests, and rivers come alive after the winter thaw, and wildflowers usually begin to dot the landscape in May. Be sure to stop at one of the visitor centers in the park to learn about its history, wildlife, and environment. You may want to spend a night before setting out on the John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Memorial Parkway toward Yellowstone.

Heading north, you’ll be entering Yellowstone at the southernmost of its five entrances. You’ll pass Lewis Lake and waterfalls on your way to the Grant Visitor Center . Be sure to check the park’s website or convenient app regarding road conditions, especially in early spring. Head west to the Old Faithful Visitor Education Center to learn about the famous geyser and see it erupt. Watch for the park’s abundant wildlife, which includes bighorn sheep, bison, elk, moose, deer, black bears, coyotes, and mountain lions. If time allows, you can continue your national parks road trip by heading farther north to Glacier National Park in Montana.

Seattle to Newport, Oregon

You may find Seattle a bit rainy in the spring, but you'll likely see fewer crowds and lower prices. After dining on seafood, strolling through Pike Place Market, and seeing the sights over Puget Sound, head southwest towards the Oregon coast and the lovely town of Astoria. The trip begins on I-5 and is about 180 miles, passing enormous pine trees, green forests, and charming towns. It takes about three and a half hours until you cross the four-mile Astoria-Megler Bridge spanning the Columbia River and enter Astoria. There, you should spend the night and take some time exploring in the morning.

Astoria is located at the mouth of the Columbia River, close to the Pacific Ocean, and the Maritime Museum’s displays show the challenges of ships navigating the area. Once a center of fur trading and canneries, Astoria’s historic homes still stand, and the town almost seems lost in time. Don’t miss the view from Coxcomb Hill and the Astoria Column , dedicated in 1926 to honor Astoria’s early settlers.

Set out from Astoria along US-101, heading south along Oregon’s coast, and plan for many stops along the way at observation points, towns, state parks, beaches, or simply to enjoy breathtaking views of rugged coastline and crashing waves. Ecola State Park , with its sandy beach, tide pools, picnic areas, and hiking trails would be an appealing place to stop. Other beaches, wildlife preserves, and fishing villages will beckon you along the way, turning the 133-mile trip from Astoria into a full day. Relax in Newport, visit the Oregon Coast Aquarium , and dine on fresh seafood at sunset as you decide on your next stop. Willamette Valley wineries? Portland? More coastal towns? State Route 20 heads inland and US-101 continues south for your next adventure.

Rapid City to Badlands National Park, South Dakota

Rapid City is not only a great destination in itself, with art galleries, restaurants, and historic sites. It’s also the gateway to Mount Rushmore, the Minuteman Missile National Historic Site , and Badlands National Park , where this road trip will take you. Fossil beds, rugged mountains, wildlife, and striking rock formations create a unique environment.

The park is about 60 miles east of Rapid City, and South Dakota Route 44 is a scenic road through open prairie, farms, small towns, and ranches along Rapid Creek, a tributary of the Cheyenne River. You’ll drive through the Buffalo Gap National Grassland before reaching the entrance to Badlands National Park, two miles north of the town of Interior on Highway 377. From there, the Badlands Loop State Scenic Byway (SD-240) takes you through the park along 31 miles of stunning scenery that includes buttes, cliffs, spires, and overlooks where you’ll be amazed by the stretch of landscape before you.

Plan to spend several hours among the varied terrain and scenic beauty. Hike one of the many trails, and stop at the Ben Reifel Visitor Center to learn more about the park's history, wildlife, and geology. Don’t leave without a stop at Pinnacles Overlook , especially striking at sunset. To return to Rapid City, take SD-240 west to the town of Wall and then head west on I-90 for a quicker route.

New York City to Cape May, New Jersey

There’s always something to do in New York City, and after you’ve seen the shows, walked through the museums, and had your fill of the best bagels, get behind the wheel and head south along the Jersey Shore. You’ll probably leave the city via the Holland Tunnel to cross under the Hudson River to New Jersey. Stay on Route 78, and then take I-95 after you cross Newark Bay. After Perth Amboy, take the Garden State Parkway for a more scenic drive closer to the coast. Whew! You're out of the city.

The entire route is around 160 miles, and you’ll pass through some well-known beach towns worth a jaunt off the Parkway, so allow plenty of time. Asbury Park is where Bruce Springsteen got his start, and other beach towns, long popular as summer getaways, include Belmar, Spring Lake, Point Pleasant, and towns on Long Beach Island, a narrow barrier island that parallels the coast. Take Route 9 when it branches off around Toms River for a more scenic route closer to the ocean. Atlantic City, home to hotels, restaurants, casinos, beaches, and its historic boardwalk is next along your route. Stop at Steel Pier , a 1,000-foot amusement park offering rides, games, and food.

Nearing the southernmost end of New Jersey, you’ll reach Wildwood , a resort city with Adventure Amusement Pier , 1950s-style motels, diners, and retro entertainment. Just a bit further, but seemingly a world away, Cape May offers Victorian-style homes, quaint cottages, boutiques, galleries, and history dating back to the 1600s. Walk among its historic buildings and spend a night in one of its inns or bed and breakfasts before returning to New York or continuing south on the Cape May-Lewes Ferry , which can accommodate cars.

New Orleans to Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Once you’ve had your fill of beignets and oysters Rockefeller in New Orleans, consider a springtime getaway up the road to Louisiana’s capital. This southern road trip is only about 100 miles, but with so much history and beauty along the way, you should plan on making it a full-day trip.

Take I-10 west out of town and I-310 south to LA-18, a scenic road that hugs the Mississippi. Stop at cemeteries, churches, and any picturesque places along the way that catch your eye. Then, merge onto LA-3213 N, cross the river, and make a slight left onto US-61 N to pass through Gonzales, also known as the “Jambalaya Capital of the World.” The town has a festival dedicated to the dish every May and several Cajun restaurants like The Jambalaya Shoppe .

Get on I-10 W in Prairieville from US-61 N and follow it for about 25 minutes to Baton Rouge. Enjoy some time in the city, and perhaps spend the night after your long day of driving. You might consider touring the LSU Rural Life Museum , which documents the cultures of 18th- and 19th-century rural Louisianans. For a faster return, take I-10 east, or continue west on I-10 to Lafayette, Lake Charles, and beyond.

San Antonio to Austin, Texas

If you happen to be in San Antonio in April, don’t miss Fiesta , a celebration dating back to 1891 that honors the heroes of the Alamo and the Battle of San Jacinto with parades, flowers, food, and entertainment. Enjoy the River Walk and restaurants while you plan your Texas-style road trip to the state capital of Austin. Wildflowers and the spring landscape make this meandering drive one of the most beautiful routes to Austin (just don't expect it to be the quickest). Head west on I-10 out of the city, and then west on I-410 to TX-16 north (Bandera Road) for a scenic drive through Hill Country.

The town of Bandera , home to dude ranches and farms, was once a center for cattle drives, hence its nickname, the “Cowboy Capital of the World.” From there, head north on TX-173 and TX-16 to Fredericksburg , a Texas city with a German heritage dating back to its first settlers in the mid-1800s. Wineries and authentic German cuisine make this an attractive stopping point. If you have time, stop in Enchanted Rock State Natural Area to see its pink granite dome and striking rock formations.

Austin is about 80 miles east on US-290, but if there’s time for one more detour, you might want to visit Pedernales Falls State Park , just six miles north of US-290 about halfway to Austin. Known for entertainment, food, and nightlife, Austin is called the “Live Music Capital of the World.” You may want to spend a night to see what it’s all about. When it’s time to leave, you can take a direct route back to San Antonio on I-35 south, making the trip in under an hour and a half.

Phoenix to Flagstaff, Arizona

Spring is lovely in Phoenix, with April temperatures around the mid-80s. Flagstaff, at 7,000 feet of elevation, sees cooler average temperatures in the 60s and 70s during spring. The drive begins on I-17 north through the Sonoran Preserve and continues through the desert landscape for an hour before reaching our first suggested stop, Arcosanti . The experimental community is considered one of the best small towns in Arizona due to its futuristic and eco-conscious architecture, so set aside an hour or two to explore.

Then, continue up I-17 to the Montezuma Castle National Monument . These well-preserved prehistoric cliff dwellings were the homes of the Sinagua people for more than 400 years.

Continue northeast on I-17, then take AZ-179 north to Sedona along the Red Rock Scenic Byway , with about eight miles of stunning scenery that includes rugged sandstone rock formations tinted red by the presence of iron. Spend some time in the small town, explore the shops and restaurants, or hike among the rocks to feel the energy some refer to as vortexes.

Take AZ-89A north toward Flagstaff, but don’t miss Slide Rock State Park , especially during wildflower season. In just over 30 minutes, you’ll arrive in Flagstaff, home to the world’s largest ponderosa pine forest. Explore the historic downtown on a walking tour and rest there for the night before heading back to Phoenix or on to Grand Canyon National Park , Wupatki National Monument , Petrified Forest National Park , or one of the other national or state parks accessible from the gateway of Flagstaff.

Los Angeles to Big Bear Lake, California

Ron and Patty Thomas/Getty Images

No list of spring road trips would be complete without one of the most beloved — the Rim of the World Scenic Byway . The 110-mile trip takes drivers along the cliffs of the San Bernardino Mountains from one breathtaking view to the next.

Begin at Cajon Pass off Interstate 15, about an hour east of Los Angeles on Interstate 10. This drive takes you through some of the most scenic spots in California’s Inland Empire area, with plenty of photo opportunities at lookouts like Lake Silverwood Scenic Overlook  off State Highway 138.

If there’s time to spend in Lake Arrowhead, off State Route 173, we highly recommend a tour on the  Lake Arrowhead Queen paddle-wheel boat  to get a good look at the lake and its scenic shores. Stay overnight at Lake Arrowhead Resort and Spa for a relaxing evening of waterfront dining and alpine views from its private beach.

Join State Route 18 for your drive east toward Big Bear. Embrace your mountainous surroundings and stay at one of the chic cabins at Noble + Proper . Go for a hike on the  Castle Rock Trail  to catch unparalleled views of Big Bear Lake. Before you head back to L.A., grab a poke bowl and orange-guava smoothie at Tropicali , Big Bear’s popular restaurant on the Rim of the World with Hawaiian-style trappings.

1. Phoenix to Page Arizona

One of my favourite memories in the United States was a road trip the length of Arizona. I started in Phoenix, slowly making my way to the top of the state and ending in Page. There are many great pit stops along the way, so this adventure needs at least a few days to complete (it would be better if you have a week).

Don’t miss out on Sedona , a beautiful town full of many great day hikes, climbing and mountain bike trails. Page is the last town before the border to Utah and it is here where you will find many of Arizona’s famous photographic points of interest. Horseshoe Bend, the slot canyons in Navajo country and The Wave are just a few!

2. Pacific Coast Highway

The West Coast is an adventure waiting to happen, especially if you like to escape the cities and explore the coastline. The Pacific Coast Highway is full of hidden gems, all situated between Los Angeles to San Francisco. You can do the drive in one day, though you will find it much more enjoyable by spending a night or two near the coast. Carmel-by-the-sea is a great base to stop for a few days and enjoy the slower pace of Californian coast life.

3. Joshua Tree National Park

If you live in Los Angeles, there’s no better escape than a mystical weekend away in Joshua Tree . The National Park aside, there are some great vintage thrift stores , swap meets on weekends, book stores and above all, the towns have a real quirky appeal.

If you plan to stay a few days, check in to the tiny cabin of Joshua Tree for a romantic escape, or there are plenty of great cabin rentals for larger groups. Of course, the National Park is the big drawcard for visitors and there are plenty of great short hikes to be discovered. However, be sure to spend a little more time discovering the small towns once you’ve seen the famous Joshua Trees as there’s a lot more to discover!

4. San Antonio to Austin, Texas

There are many great reasons to visit Texas but my two favourites are San Antonio and Austin. Both of these cities have such great personalities, so a road trip between the two is a guaranteed good time. If you find yourself in San Antonio, one of my favourite hotels in the world is here – Hotel Emma . There’s a really great emerging scene of creative people in this area of the city and it is perfect for those in need of inspiration.

The South is full of so many great adventures and I learned that first hand on a road trip through Louisiana about five years ago. There’s just so much culture and history waiting to be discovered! 8. The Great Smoky Mountains

It was many years ago I drove through the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee, but it is a trip I have certainly not forgotten. Straddling the border of Tennessee and North Carolina, this mountain range is one of the most beautiful drives to be had on this side of the country and summer is considered the best time to visit.

9. Route 66

Starting in Chicago, Route 66 takes you all the way to the Californian coast and finishes in Santa Monica. The route will take you across much of the American Midwest, Great Plains and Southwest. It is widely considered the classic American route across the country and one of the great road trips in the USA. However, you can’t *really* take the old original route, but you can still travel much of the same scenery on various highways.

10. Park Loop Acadia National Park

The East Coast of the United States is bursting with endless road trips, each more beautiful than the next! Another top pick is the Park Loop in Acadia National Park in Maine. 11. Oregon Coast Highway

Driving the Oregon Coast is one of the surreal moments in life you probably think don’t actually happen anymore. While there are many more celebrated drives on the West Coast, this is one of those road trips flying under the radar. The best part about Oregon is the laidback lifestyle and no-rush attitude, making this one of the most soul-fulfilling journeys to take by road.

13. The Alaskan Highway

A drive on the Alaska Highway can take anywhere from 60 hours to ten days. This is not only one of the best road trips in the USA, but also crosses Canada. 14. Zion National Park, Utah

Utah is practically bursting at the seams with road trip opportunities. But if we had to pick just one journey, we’d opt for a road trip through Zion National Park. The park borders Arizona, with the closest town on that side of the border being Page. This is where you will find beautiful locations like Horseshoe Bend and the Slot Canyons. Therefore this is a great add-on after an adventure through Arizona!

If you’re anything like me, you’ve always wanted to visit South Dakota. Which basically just means you watched the film “Richie Rich” as a kid. South Dakota has some stunning scenery in the Black Hills. This underrated state was practically made for the great all American road trip!

13 Marvelous Midwest Road Trips (Itinerary Ideas + Tips!)

Of all the regions of the USA, there’s a good chance that (for non-locals) the Midwest is the most surprising–and that alone is an excellent reason to plan a Midwest road trip!

Packed with diverse national and state parks, incredible beaches (yes, beaches!), interesting cities, a seemingly endless array of quaint lighthouses and charming small towns, and so much more, the Midwest is far more than “flyover country”.

Sure, many of the best road trips in the Midwest require a lot of time on the interstate.

And yes, visiting in winter probably isn’t optimal for most first-time visitors.

But, if you’ve never visited the region before, any of these incredible Midwest road trip routes–many of them written by locals–are bound to leave you enchanted.

From the wide-open spaces of Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota to the stunning architecture of Chicago to the historic charm of Mackinac Island, there are so many incredible places to visit in the Midwest.

We have offered suggestions for the best hotels in each place but if you are doing this as a true road trip it is really cool to do it in an RV. You can rent incredible RVs and camper vans from Outdoorsy, book here for your next road trip!

Quick Tips for Taking Your Midwest Road Trip

Don’t underestimate the driving distances.

The Midwest is an expansive region with lots of wide open spaces, and that can lend itself to drives that are longer than some visitors might expect!

Be sure to check estimated driving times carefully when planning your route, and build in plenty of stops to stretch your legs.

… And also to check out the many quirky roadside attractions in the region, like the Corn Palace in South Dakota or the American Gothic House in Iowa!

If you’re renting a car, shop around.

The best company to rent a car from for your Midwest road trip will likely vary dramatically depending on where and when you’re traveling.

Sometimes large international carriers offer the best prices, sometimes local outfits. Sometimes one company has an excellent base price, but terrible rental requirements.

The best way to find your rental car is to search through  Discover Cars , which will sift through dozens of companies to find the best combination of low prices and reasonable rental terms for your road trip route.

Browse rental cars  for your Midwestern USA road trip today!

Read the rental requirements carefully.

Especially make sure you know how many miles you’ve been allotted (or ideally, if they’re unlimited), if you need to return the car empty or full of fuel, what to do if the car breaks down, and what damages you’re liable for in the event of an accident.

Make sure you pack the right gear.

From safety gear to snacks, a road trip in the Midwest requires bringing the right tools along, whether you’re taking a short vacation, trying out van life, or something in between.

We recommend taking a look at the suggestions on  our road trip packing list  before you go!

Don’t overextend yourself.

Exploring all of the incredible places to visit in the Midwest is a project for a lifetime, not one trip!

As tempting as it is to add on additional driving to stop at just one more waterfall, lighthouse, or small town, make sure that you leave enough time to thoroughly explore each destination rather than spending the entirety of your vacation driving from one spot to the next.

Be prepared to be surprised!

If this is your first trip to the Midwest, there’s a good chance that its diversity and beauty will enchant you in all the best ways.

When exploring the Midwest, beautiful beaches, delicious food, gorgeous fall foliage, incredibly warm people, and dynamic cities–among many other treasures–are just around the corner.

South Dakota State + National Parks Road Trip

From Allison of Eternal Arrival

One of the best Midwest road trips is a loop from Rapid City, South Dakota making stops in its two national parks, as well as Custer State Park!

This is an easy road trip that you can do in as little as 4 days, but you can also make it part of a larger  South Dakota road trip itinerary .

Start in Rapid City to begin your trip and then make your way first to Wall, SD.

This fun little town is a great place to stop at Wall Drug Store for scenic photos in an Old West-feeling setting.

From there, head through Badlands National Park from the Northeast Entrance, taking the 30-mile Badlands Loop Road and stopping at as many overlooks as possible!

Depart via the Pinnacles Entrance and then make your way to Wind Cave National Park.

Wind Cave National Park is beautiful but there must be some advance planning as you need advance reservations to visit Wind Cave.

Book your reservation for one of the 3 tours, ranging from moderate to hard difficulty, on the  NPS website here .

After visiting Wind Cave, swing up north towards Custer State Park for one of the final stops on this South Dakota tour.

Custer State Park in the Black Hills is home to lots of stunning wildlife, including bison, pronghorn antelope, and elk. Bring your binoculars and a zoom lens!

Finally, drive back to Rapid City to end your road trip.

Driving Distance

Recommended road trip length.

At a minimum, you should spend at least 2 days in Badlands National Park, 1 day in Wind Cave National Park, and 1 day in Custer State Park.

This road trip can be done easily in 4 days, but you can stretch it out to a week and visit other sites like Mt. Rushmore, the Black Hills National Forest, Keystone, and Crazy Horse.

Ohio Road Trip Along Lake Erie’s Coast

From Theresa of Fueled By Wanderlust

One of the Midwest’s best road trips is  driving Ohio’s Lake Erie coast   from Cleveland to Marblehead for gorgeous lake views, beautiful sunsets, and lots of local history.

Beginning in downtown Cleveland, spend a day exploring the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, Old Arcade, and West Side Market.

Depart Cleveland the next day via Route 2, with several lakefront parks to your right.

Edgewater Park and Lakewood Park offer Cleveland skyline views, while Edgewater Park and Huntington Reservation have pretty beaches.

Continue for thirty minutes towards Lorain, OH, transitioning over to Route 6.

While being a rust belt city, Lorain also offers a broad beach at Lakeview Park and the charming Lorain Harbor Lighthouse.

Literature fans may also know it as Toni Morrison’s hometown and the setting of  The Bluest Eye .

Vermilion, the next town over, is a quaint location for an overnight stay.

Its small downtown has an old-timey feel, with historic storefronts and a soda shop.

red and white lighthouse in vermilion ohio with lake erie in the background

Take a stroll down Main Street for elegant dining at Chez Francois, and to see tiny Vermilion Lighthouse and its adjacent beach.

After leaving Vermilion, continue down Route 6 for a short rural break until you reach Sandusky.

After consuming Asian fusion food and craft beer at Small City Taphouse, walk 10 minutes to the Maritime Museum of Sandusky.

This museum features exhibits on the Battle of Lake Erie and Sandusky’s role in the Underground Railroad.

If you love roller coasters, plan an extra day in Sandusky to catch thrills at Cedar Point.

Finally, drive 30 more minutes to the tip of the Marblehead Peninsula to reach the 200-year-old Marblehead Lighthouse.

This beauty is the oldest continuously running lighthouse on the Great Lakes.

With no stops,  this drive  takes a little over 2.5 hours.

However, I recommend slowing down over a long weekend to fully enjoy each stop.

North Dakota Road Trip (Fargo to Theodore Roosevelt National Park)

From Anwar of Beyond My Door

Many people overlook North Dakota, however, the state has a plethora of road trip-worthy sites.

Starting in Fargo, visiting the town that is unfairly characterized by the movie of the same name, visitors can enjoy this hip small city of the north.

Be sure to check out the Plains Arts Museum and the wonderful contemporary, traditional, and folk art of the region.

For those with more time, a quick stop in adjacent Moorhead MN, and the Hjemkomst Center, visitors can connect with the local Scandinavian culture through this incredible boat journey.

From Fargo, head west stopping in Jamestown, to see the old wild west town and the largest buffalo.

Similar to many other big roadside attractions throughout the state.

From here, visitors can detour slightly north and visit interesting Lewis and Clark expedition sites such as Fort Mandan (where Lewis and Clark wintered) and the nearby Knife River Indian Villages known as the birthplace of Sacajawea.

june road trip ideas

Both can easily be visited on the same day before heading on towards Bismarck.

Bismarck, the capital but smaller and sleepier than Fargo has a cute downtown as well as beautiful nature nearby.

But if you are pressed for time save the nature exploration until you head to  Theodore Roosevelt NP , 2 hours west of the capital.

Named for the 26th president, the park protects North Dakotan Badlands and local flora and fauna such as bison.

The park is divided into two non-connected units and at least 2 days are worth spending in the park.

river running through the plains in north dakota road trip

But if you have very limited time, the South Unit has more diversity of sights.

For those with more time and desire to explore local history, a quick stop at Fort Union Trading Post (90 minutes from the north unit) is worth a look at the fur trade and one of the most important forts in the mid-1800s.

About 550 miles, plus time in the national park.

This Midwest road trip can be anywhere from 4 to 8+ days.

It’s recommended to spend at least 2 days in Fargo, a day en route to Bismarck, 1-2 days in and around Bismarck, and another 2-3 days in Theodore Roosevelt NP.

Minnesota’s Iron Range

From Susan of This Big Wild World

Have you heard of Minnesota’s Iron Range ?

Stretching from central Minnesota and north to the border of Canada, the region is home to some of the best mountain biking in the country, excellent hiking, and the pristine wilderness of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area.

This Midwest road trip itinerary starts and ends in Minneapolis, which is a city worth exploring!

Enjoy an afternoon at a Minnesota Twins baseball game or paddling the lakes in the heart of the city.

Next, head to Crosby which is part of Cuyuna Country. What once were mining pits are now crystal clear lakes surrounded by mountain biking trails for all levels.

Spend a day paddle boarding or kayaking the lakes or cruising the trails. Gear rentals are available in Crosby.

From there, drive to Ely which is a gateway into the Boundary Waters.

This area is among the most beautiful and remote wilderness in the US, best explored by canoe. Find guides and outfitters in Ely for gear and permits.

For hiking, try the Norberg Lake Trail at nearby Bear Head Lake State Park or the Bass Lake Loop Trail.

Duluth is a harbor town on Lake Superior, offering easy access to popular destinations along Minnesota’s north shore.

Be sure to watch for the big ships entering the harbor near Canal Park, relax on the beach at Park Point, and stop at one of the many breweries in town.

Ursa Minor and Bent Paddle are local favorites!

These destinations are just 2-3 hours apart and have tons to explore.

Spend a minimum of 1 day in each of the 4 destinations for a 4-5 day trip.

Or, take your time and spend up to 3 days in each destination for a 7-10 day road trip.

Badlands National Park Scenic Road Trip

From Theresa of The Local Tourist

At only39 miles, the Badlands Loop State Scenic Byway is a short but mighty road trip in South Dakota.

Driving through Badlands National Park  is a surreal experience.

You’ll feel like you’re on another planet instead on a road trip in the Midwest USA.

The drive begins in Cactus Flat at Exit 131 off I-90. You’ll know you’re nearing the exit because you’ll begin seeing sand-colored buttes, spires, and cliffs to the south.

After taking the exit, it’s a short distance to enter Badlands National Park.

Before you even get to the Ben Reifel Visitor Center, you’ll see a few overlooks and trailheads.

winding road through badlands national park

The visitor center itself is a great place to get your bearings, take a bathroom break, and get something to eat at the restaurant next door.

From there, you’ll continue west through the otherworldly landscape.

In addition to the unique formations, you’re also likely to encounter pronghorn antelope, bighorn sheep, bison, and prairie dogs.

The road ends at Wall, which is a destination in its own right with its famous, or infamous, Wall Drug.

You could drive straight through in about an hour, but what’s the fun in that?

For a more immersive experience, camp at one of the two campgrounds within the park and take some day hikes.

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

From Linda of Midwest Explored

Easily one of the best road trips in the Midwest USA, a drive through Michigan’s upper peninsula is a must-do.

Start one of the best Michigan road trips of them all by crossing Mackinac Bridge into the Upper Peninsula.

If you want, leave your car behind and enjoy all that Mackinac Island has to offer before continuing on.

After all, this island is completely car-free and features top attractions like Fort Mackinac and Arch Rock.

Next, continue onto the peninsula and check out the natural beauty of Kitch-iti-kipi, an incredible local spring with crystal-clear waters.

Then, hop back on the road and drive to Porcupine Wilderness State Park.

view of fall foliage and a lake in porcupine wilderness state park, one of the best stops on a michigan road trip midwest itinerary

It’s a wonderful area with stellar views of Lake Superior, gorgeous local waterfalls, and 90+ miles of trails that will take you through vast old-growth forests.

From here, drive until you hit Marquettethe.

It’s known for being the largest city in this UP (Upper Peninsula for all the non-Michiganders out there) and is a great place to explore Presque Isle Park, Sugarloaf Mountain, and Lakenenland Sculpture Park.

Finally, conclude your road trip at the Pictured Lakes National Lakeshore with its dynamic natural landscape.

Be sure to explore the multicolored Pictured Rocks cliffs, Miners Castle, Chapel Rock sandstone formations, and Twelvemile Beach.

While this road trip isn’t long, taking around 2 hours to drive, plan on devoting between 3 and 5 days to this trip.

You could definitely spend an entire day on Mackinac Island alone!

Mount Rushmore to the Badlands, South Dakota

From Candice of CS Ginger

Mount Rushmore to the Badlands of South Dakota is a fantastic Midwest road trip route.

While there’s a sad story behind the impressive facade of Mount Rushmore, there’s no doubt that visiting the monument and associated museum is an incredible experience.

After visiting Mount Rushmore and touring all it has to offer, you will travel to the Badlands National Park.

Badlands National Park is a very beautiful and unique area.

There are really fun hiking trails in the Badlands , and it is a great place to visit with your family.

You will be surprised at all the animals the Badlands offer.

You can see big horn sheep, buffalo, and the famous prairie dog area where you will see lots of prairie dogs. You can get very close to the prairie dogs but don’t touch them or get too close!

3 praire dogs in badlands national park, a great stop on a south dakota midwest road trip

If you want to stay in the park, you will need to stay at Cedar Pass Lodge in one of their rental cabins.

There are some hotels and camping options close by, but the Cedar Pass Lodge is the only option if you are looking at staying inside the park.

This is a classic road trip in the Midwest, and a fantastic way to spend a long weekend (or longer!).

About 80 miles.

We recommend spending at least 3 days enjoying this road trip in South Dakota, though 4-5 days would be better if you have more than a long weekend to work with.

Missouri + Southern Illinois Road Trip

From Tori of Tori Pines Travels

When planning a road trip in the Midwest, you won’t want to miss Missouri and Southern Illinois.

The perfect road trip includes a variety of cities filled with activities, nature to explore, and delicious food to eat, and you’ll find plenty of that here.

Start in Kansas City, Missouri where you’ll visit the American Jazz Museum and Money Museum.

For the famous Kansas City BBQ, check out Gates Bar-B-Q and order burnt ends.

Spend two nights here, before continuing east across the state to St. Louis.

A weekend in St. Louis is the perfect amount of time.

Start at the country’s smallest national park, The Gateway Arch National Park, ride the tram to the top for incredible views over the city.

The free museum teaches the history of St. Louis and its title as the gateway to the west.

That night, visit Busch Field for a Cardinals game with the arch as your backdrop.

For kids, and kids at heart, spend a few hours at the City Museum, the most unique children’s museum you’ll find.

Fill the rest of your time with visits to the free activities, the St. Louis Zoo, St. Louis Art Museum, and Missouri History Museum!

Eat some of St. Louis’s staples, toasted ravioli, St. Louis Style pizza, St. Louis style ribs, and gooey butter cake.

Finish off the road trip by venturing across the river into Illinois to Shawnee National Forest.

Great Cities of the Midwest Road Trip Loop

From Lisa of Waves and Cobblestones

Looking for a fun road trip itinerary in the Midwest?

Making a round trip from Chicago, Illinois to Milwaukee and Madison in Wisconsin will give you a great sampling of museums, architecture, and natural beauty to enjoy.

Start your road trip in Chicago, Illinois. One of the undisputed best experiences here is the architectural river cruise .

Your vantage point from the river gives you great views of the skyscrapers, and you’ll learn a lot about Chicago’s architecture and history.

Chicago is also home to several fantastic museums, including the famous Art Institute of Chicago.

The Field Museum is the home of Sue, the largest Tyrannosaurus rex specimen ever discovered.

Chicago Skyline with river filled with sailboats in the center, an excellent view to seek out during 3 days in Chicago

Your next stop is Madison, Wisconsin. This college town is also the capital of Wisconsin.

The Capitol building is incredible and is free to tour. Be sure to take in the panoramic city views from the observation deck!

One of the  best things to do in Madison   is to visit the Olbrich Botanical Gardens.

The outdoor areas of the garden are free to visit. Don’t miss the phenomenal Thai pavilion and garden – this is definitely the garden’s highlight!

Route 66 Road Trip Through the Midwest (Chicago to Oklahoma)

From Kylie of Between England and Iowa

The classic US road trip Route 66 starts in Chicago Illinois and passes through the Midwestern states of Missouri and Kansas before crossing into Oklahoma and continuing west all the way to Los Angeles, California.

Of course, it’s quicker to travel on the Interstate but the heart of the road trip is to follow the original route across the country.

Travelers could easily spend a couple of days exploring Chicago alone, but it’s at least worthwhile checking out the Route 66 BEGIN sign at E Adams St and S Michigan Ave.

The stretch across Illinois between  Chicago to St Louis   can take upwards of 12 hours, especially if stopping at several of the different points of interest.

historic route 66 begin sign in chicago, start of one of the top road trips in midwest usa

When the Interstate was built, it bypassed all the small towns along the route.

To encourage travelers to come back many of the towns created unique roadside attractions.

Today, you can find a mixture of historic buildings that were part of the original Route 66 as well as the unique attractions from the time after the Interstate was built.

Some highlights between Chicago, IL, and Catoosa, OK include The Gemini Giant (Wilmington, IL), Pontiac, IL, the Chain of Rocks Bridge, IL, Gateway Arch National Park (St. Louis, MO), the World’s Largest Rocking Chair (Fanning, MO), Cars On The Route (Galena, KS) and the Blue Whale (Catoosa, OK).

Approximately 700 miles.

This road trip could be done in around 3 days (overnight stops in St Louis, MO, and Carthage, MO).

However, with the addition of spending time exploring the larger cities of Chicago and St. Louis, it is better to take around 5 or 6 days.

Great Lakes Road Trip in Wisconsin + Michigan

From Jenifer of The Evolista

One of the best Midwestern road trip journeys is a National Lakeshore Road Trip to visit 2 of the best kayaking trips in the US , Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is a spectacularly beautiful area in the most northern part of Wisconsin that has a 12-mile stretch of mainland rocky cliffs with sea caves and a chain of 21 islands.

It also has the distinction of having the most lighthouses in the USA.

A kayak tour of the mainland sea caves will take you to the prettiest spots around the reddish sandstone shoreline.

You will cruise through incredible caves in turquoise water and can also hike the Lakeshore Trail through old-growth forest for a different vantage point.

apostle islands national lakeshore as seen from the water at sunset

On your way to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, break up the drive with a day at Porcupine Mountains State Park where you’ll find waterfalls, tons of hiking trails, and gorgeous views, especially for fall foliage.

It adds an extra hour of drive time but it’s completely worth it.

When you arrive in Munising, you’ll be treated to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore’s towering multi-colored cliffs, bright blue waters, and hidden caves.

On a kayak tour, you can paddle to Lovers Leap Arch, Chapel Rock, Battleship Row, and sea caves. Or hike the Chapel Loop Trail to get even more incredible views.

But this place isn’t all about the rocks. Don’t miss Twelvemile Beach for a traditional beach day or enjoy the sunset at Sandpoint beach.

And you’ll also find beautiful waterfalls at Munising Falls and Miner’s Falls.

This road trip in the Midwest takes approximately 6 hours of driving.

Plan at least 4 days to be able to do daily activities and a week to enjoy at a more leisurely pace.

Kansas City, Omaha + Des Moines Road Trip Loop

From Sage of Everyday Wanderer

There are many things to love about Kansas City — flowing fountains, tree-lined boulevards, and the world’s best barbeque.

So before you head north on this road trip loop through America’s Heartland, be sure you’ve hit all of the highlights in the Chiefs Kingdom.

Start with the Liberty Memorial. This 217-foot tall limestone tower surrounded by acres of green space honors those who perished in World War I and is home to the only museum dedicated to the Great War.

It’s also one of the best places to view the Kansas City skyline.

Then head to the Country Club Plaza where you can shop, dine, and admire Spanish-inspired architecture and several of the city’s most renowned fountains.

Then stroll through the sculpture garden, explore the glass maze, and snap a selfie with one of four, oversized badminton shuttlecocks at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.

And you certainly won’t want to leave town without eating your fill of Kansas City barbeque .

plate of smoked barbecue ribs in a restaurant

The next stop is Nebraska’s biggest city, Omaha, about three hours to the north.

Walk across the Missouri River – a natural border between Nebraska and Iowa – on the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge.

Then enjoy The RiverFront connecting river to Downtown Omaha with lush green space, pet-friendly areas, a sculpture garden, and more.

Fuel up at a cafe or eatery in the Old Market, and don’t miss the world-renowned Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium.

The capital city of Des Moines is about two hours east of Omaha.

Stretch your legs after the drive by wandering through Pappajohn Sculpture Park or strolling through the botanical garden.

Tour the gold-domed capitol building, and learn more about Iowa’s biggest city with an interactive scavenger hunt.

skyline of des moines iowa at sunset, a fun stop on midwest road trip itineraries

Outdoor enthusiasts will want to hike or bike the Des Moines River Trail, and foodies will want to compare the barbeque at Flying Mango to what they enjoyed in Kansas City.

On the way back to Kansas City, stop in Pella. With its working grain windmill, Dutch bakeries, and thousands of tulips in the spring, you’ll feel as if you’ve been transported to the Netherlands while exploring the middle of America.

580  miles.

We recommend enjoying this Midwest road trip itinerary over the course of a week, in order to allow about 2 days per city.

As the name suggests, this route is very scenic, so plan to spend at least a few days exploring it and numerous stops along the way. In the minds of many, trips to Puerto Rico bring images of stunning beaches , delicious foods , and maybe a bioluminescent bay or two . Maximize Summer Fun with These June Travel Ideas

Make the most out of all those extra hours of sunshine..

Can you hear them? The number of states establishing Juneteenth as a holiday are growing en masse. Tennessee and West Virginia are the latest, and there may be more to come. If you’re in one of these new states, congrats to you! Plan accordingly. And if you’re stuck on how to celebrate, read on for some ideas.

Summer doesn’t technically arrive ‘till June 21, but mentally, we’re already there. We’ve rounded the corner on Memorial Day and now it’s full speed ahead to warm weather, blue skies, barbecues, and frosty brews. There are rivers that need floating, tents that need pitching, and beach boardwalks that need patrolling. As days stretch languidly into night, our task now is to decide how we’re gonna spend all those extra daylight hours.

Should we hop abroad for a weekend or explore our own backyards? Take in the earthships of Taos, or the tinsel-strewn floats of LGBTQ+ Pride? And don’t forget about the father figure in your life this June 19. Maybe treat him to a solstice-themed midnight baseball game in Fairbanks, Alaska, or let him nerd out at the technical systems of the sustainable earthships in Taos. Or take him on an adventurous international road trip. Driving! We hear dads love that. Here are our top travel ideas for a June to remember.

Take a road trip, but make it international

Have you checked out our shiny new international road trips package ? It’s just like our domestic road trips package but, like, abroad. We’ve got some of the highest roads in the world at the top of India , underwater driving in the Faroe Islands , off-roading in Costa Rica , and much more, including an adventurous dirt-road motorcycle ride spanning East Africa . Try it yourself, or live vicariously—the pictures alone are worth the click.

You can also get tips on how to stay fresh during a long-haul road trip and what exactly you need to know to get your International Drivers License . And if you’re more a passenger than a driver, get your third-party thrills via this story on some of the most adventurous players in the driving biz today , a.k.a. the daredevils that take on the two-week Dakar Rally (actually now held in Saudi Arabia—it’s all explained in the story). So what are you waiting for? Even if you’re staying close to home, we all need a little driving inspo, because, after all, sometimes the journey is the destination.

Venture beyond Angkor Wat in Cambodia

Visit Siem Reap in Cambodia and you’re definitely hitting up Angkor Archaeological Park , where ancient monuments—including the famous Angkor Wat—lay in dense jungles packed with even denser populations (seriously, you’ll want to go first thing in the morning to avoid the crowds and catch the sunrise).

But the city itself has much to offer in the way of modern fare: boutique stores, art galleries, spas, and, of course, food. In recent years, enterprising young Cambodian chefs have begun putting their own spin on traditional Khmer cuisine at places like Jomno and Cuisine Wat Damnak (vegan dishes included). In between meals, hike to waterfalls or dive deep into history at the Land Mine Museum, managed by a former Khmer Rouge child soldier. For some lighter fare, there’s the Phare Circus , where storytelling filters through a uniquely Cambodian lens, or stop into the night market to pick up some local crafts. While you’re there, go ahead and indulge in second (or third) dinner—Cambodia has some excellent street food .

Chase the purple wave

If you’re seeing purple, there’s nothing wrong with your eyes: Violet hues are everywhere this month. Like in Michigan’s charmingly nautical Mackinac Island, hosting its 75th annual Lilac Festival this month, which will feature everything from a Lilac Queen Coronation and Grand Parade to lilac-themed planting seminars and jewelry workshops. Even if you don’t care too much about the humble blossom, the festival provides an excellent excuse to get into other goings-on that celebrate the history of Mackinac, like art walks and sunset cruises.

Over in Europe, you can live out your l‘occitane dreams in Provence, where the region’s famed lavender fields are coming into full bloom. You’ll likely see them first in the villages of Luberon, followed by Valensole. And while you’re in the South of France, make your way over to Camargue to ogle at some romantic white horses (not to mention French cowboys). Or, plan a trip to Madeira, Portugal , where spring never ends. In June, the archipelago becomes dotted with Echium flowers, colloquially known as “Pride of Madeira.” These spiky, purple shrubs provide the backdrop for the ideal wine-soaked seaside vacation. Similarly, the southern coast of Iceland will be blanketed with Lupine flowers around this time. Keep an eye out for those fragrant beauties as you hike (or road trip) amongst captivating waterfalls, glacial lagoons, canyons, and black sand beaches.

Connect to the earth in Taos

After years of pandemic-fueled shut-down, the Taos Pueblo is back in business, offering public tours of the historic adobe dwellings as well as the traditional lifestyle of the Pueblo people that still inhabit them (plus the chance to score some delicious fry bread). After steeping yourself in the legacy of the straw and mud adobe structures, connect to the earth a different way with a meal at the Farmhouse Cafe , which sources ingredients from local farmers and sponsors school garden projects (the food’s pretty great too). Afterwards, head out on a spectacular hike bordering tribal land , peer at the Rio Grande from the towering Gorge Bridge , or get up close and personal with the rapids via a whitewater rafting excursion.

Back on dry land, visit Earthship Biotecture to see what the future of sustainable living could be like (spoiler alert: it’s pretty luxurious), then soak in the natural hot springs pools of Ojo Caliente Mineral Springs . Spring for a private pool and invite friends and if you choose that option, know that bathing suits are optional—something we woefully found out too late in the game.

And there’s plenty more to discover. See if you can hear the mysterious Taos Hum —try listening outside the Millicent Rogers Museum —or check out the glowing mystery painting The Shadow of the Cross , seen by tour only at the San Francisco De Assis Church (also a favorite drawing subject for famous local Georgia O’Keeffe). Those who gravitate toward the mystical properties of the area— especially those who identify as women —might want to stop by Her Sacred Alchemy , a new store serving up teas and tarots alongside a wide selection of crystals and a couple of drawers for sexual enhancement to find the magic within yourself. Come in June and catch Robert Plant and Alison Krauss performing in Kit Carson Park, then top it all off with dinner at Corner Office , the new natural wine bar in town from Jori Jayne Emde and Zakary Pelaccio, formerly of the award-winning Fish and Game in New York. Try dishes like the chickpea tamale, which connects Taos’s rich history with its earth-centric future.

Get folky in Budapest

You don’t need much of an excuse to travel to the bustling city of Budapest, known for its fairytale castles, chaotic ruin bars , and freshly baked chimney cakes. But the Danube Carnival is certainly a good one. For one week in June (9–17), contemporary artists and traditional Hungarian folk dancers will perform across the capital, ending with a special gala at the Margaret Island Open Air Stage .

Time your trip well, and you could also be in town for the Rosalia Wine Festival (June 9–11), a celebration of all things rosé taking place in City Park and featuring 60 different wineries. Sip on some pink juice, snack on some raclette, and enjoy a lineup of DJs. And if all else fails, take advantage of the outdoor baths at Széchenyi or Gellért , which are sure to welcome in the summer vibes.

Or hop abroad for a long weekend

Say you really want to finally take that big international vacation you’ve been yearning for, but don’t have a ton of time to do it. Enter the short-haul overseas trip. To help, we’ve rounded up 18 international cities that sit a hop and a skip from America’s busiest airports, from the Azores in Portugal to the cobbled streets of Dublin. Of course, Canada is always an option, where you can observe some Orca whales in Victoria, or experience a Tam-Tam in Montreal .

If you’re dreaming of tropical shores, check out the blue-green waters of the Cayman Islands and the not-technically-international-but-still-feels-like-it St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands (all is forgiven once you see the photos). While in St. Thomas, it’s just a short boat ride over to the new private island resort on Lovango Cay , open for day trips, or Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands, home of The Baths National Park . Or perhaps you’d like to swing on over to Central America? Belize boasts a winning combo of jungle, ocean, and Mayan history, and you won’t have to spend too much time finding your way around, as English is the official language. Plus, June marks the start of the country’s lobster season. Find more inspiration from our list of the best Caribbean destinations for an easy beach getaway . What are you waiting for? Dig out that swimsuit and go.

Look to the stars

Are you ready for some celestial sparkle? June has them aplenty, kicking off with Mars passing through the beehive cluster in the constellation of Cancer on June 1 and 2. A few days later is the Strawberry Moon , so named because it coincides with the annual strawberry harvest, and on June 12 and 13, it’s Venus that finds itself traveling through the beehive. It’s a very popular beehive! Later, June 21 brings us the solstice, the first day of summer for some and the first day of winter for others. (If you’re in Alaska, make your way to Fairbanks for the midnight sun baseball game , an event that cleverly takes advantage of all that extra sunlight.)

Now for all this stargazing, you’re gonna need a decent viewing point. Find yourself a Dark Sky Location—we have a few spots within driving distance of major US cities in mind. Book an Airbnb particularly geared towards stargazing or set out on a star-walking expedition . For an otherworldly experience, head to meteor crater in Flagstaff , or to gaze amongst professionals, plan to join the Bryce Canyon Astronomy Festival on June 14–17. Here you’ll find constellation tours, telescope viewing, and, on one night, orchestral accompaniment from the Dark Sky String Quartet. June 10–17 is also the Grand Canyon Star Party , with presentations from everyone from a Zuni Pueblo spiritual leader to NASA’s Dr. Julie McEnery, who works on the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, the next NASA flagship telescope.

Show off your Pride

Some big city LGBTQIA+ Pride marches—including those in Los Angeles (June 11) and New York (June 25)—will be returning in full force this year, providing a space for solidarity after a turbulent year of anti-trans legislation and violent attacks on queer communities. But beyond the coastal cities, Pride continues to be especially lively in small towns and unexpected Red states . Did you know Anchorage, Alaska is home to one of the best gay bars in the country ? (Tagline: “Over 22 years of fabulous in the last frontier. We’re all a little mad here.”) And some towns, like Cooperstown in Upstate New York, will be hosting Pride celebrations for the first time ever this year.

But if you’re less into crowded parades and more into working on your tan, we’ve rounded up some options for you. Explore the meaning of Juneteenth

June 19—or Juneteenth —commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in the US. Even though President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation took place in 1863, it wasn’t made official until June of 1865, granting freedom to the last 250,000 enslaved peoples in Galveston, Texas. This April, Galveston unveiled the Blank Slate Monument , which will be on display until July 5 at the Rosenberg Library. Created by Ghanaian artist Kwame Akoto-Bamfo, it seeks to turn the traditional Confederate monument on its head. Elsewhere in Galveston, Juneteenth celebrations abound , including a musical symposium (June 15), freedom walk tours (June 1–19), and a day-long outdoor festival (June 17), a free, family-friendly event taking place at Menard Park on the Seawall.

Tulsa, Oklahoma will throw a free weekend Juneteenth Festival (June 15–17), complete with music, food, arts, and entertainment on Greenwood Avenue, the former site of Black Wall Street . While you’re there, check out Greenwood Rising , the new world-class institution focused on the legacy and historical impact of Greenwood. Entry to the museum is free.

And in Montgomery, Alabama, the birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement, the Rosa Parks Museum will hold its own special Juneteenth programming. After taking part in the events, stop by the Equal Justice Initiative’s National Memorial for Peace & Justice and the Legacy Museum , where deeply powerful exhibits educate visitors on the history of racism in the US, from the past up to the present. And in Charleston, South Carolina, the much-anticipated International African American Museum is finally open, sitting on the historic site of Gadsden’s Wharf, the single largest point of entry for enslaved Africans brought to North America.

Consider setting sail in a houseboat

Considering our current post-pandemic remote work economy, there’s a lot more opportunities for working from places you may have never considered before. So how about a houseboat? Enjoy a waterfront sunrise every day alongside all the health benefits of being out in nature. And when you get bored of the scenery, you can always float off somewhere new.

Now, where should you go? Well, did you know that Lake Cumberland, Kentucky is the Houseboat Capital of the World ? That’s what they dub themselves anyway, thanks to the sheer number of houseboats available to rent. The fact remains to be verified, but it’s a good start if you’re looking. And for other options, we’ve got your guide to all things floating homes , from the best spot to suspend yourself atop the Mississippi River to how to traverse the Erie Canal in a European-style narrowboat to how to simply book a houseboat Airbnb because you like being rocked to sleep by the waves. And if you want to try your hand at fixing up a drifting home of your own, we’ve got some advice for you there, too. Best get started now: With the news that Manhattan is sinking , houseboats could just be the wave of the future...

2. Scenic Byway 12, Utah

State Route 12 in Utah is an All-American Road and best known for its stunning red rock landscape. Here’s a list of the Best Stops Along Scenic Byway 12 .

Fun fact: Only one-third of America’s scenic byways get the designation of “All-American Road”. It’s only given to roads that offer unique features you can’t find anywhere else.

The road winds between Capitol Reef National Park and Bryce Canyon National Park for a jaw-dropping 122 miles.

The drive can be completed in three hours, but if you plan to stop at any of the national parks, state parks, or museums or explore the scenic backways or hiking trails along Highway 12 then you’ll need to plan to spend a few days in the area!

june road trip ideas

3. Blue Ridge Parkway

Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the most famous road trip routes in the United States.

The Blue Ridge Parkway drive is 469 miles, and it connects two national parks, namely Shenandoah and the Great Smoky Mountains.

Here are the five regions and the drive time through each one:

  • Shenandoah: Afton to Roanoke – 3.5 hours
  • Ridge: Roanoke to Fancy Gap – 2.5 hours
  • Plateau: Fancy Gap to Blowing Rock – 3 hours
  • Highlands: Blowing Rock to Asheville – 3 hours
  • Pisgah: Asheville to Cherokee – 3 hours

The views you’ll see along the parkway are amazing – stop often to take pictures. And don’t forget to explore the area by taking in some hiking trails.

4. The Outer Banks, North Carolina

Route 12 on the Outer Banks in North Carolina should be on your road trip bucket list!

This route starts at Bodie Lighthouse and passes through the narrow spits of land, making up the barrier islands protecting North Carolina’s mainland from the Atlantic Ocean.

There are many fun stops and things to do along Highway 12 like the Wright Brothers National Memorial, the sand dunes of Jockey’s Ridge State Park, piers and lighthouses, Pea Island Wildlife Refuge, and the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum to name a few.

june road trip ideas

5. Overseas Highway, Florida Keys

The Overseas Highway, Florida Keys is another well-known road trip destination.

It’s often referred to as the “highway that goes to the sea” since it crosses over 42 bridges and runs 113 miles.

Because the road offers unique features you can’t find anywhere else, it’s been named an All-American Road.

Here are the must-stop areas along the route: Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, Big Pine & Lower Keys and Key West.

june road trip ideas

6. Kentucky Bourbon Trail

The Kentucky Bourbon Trail is a route that will take you to 18 different distilleries, each with its famous bourbon mix and the history behind each one of them.

There is no official route for the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, but you may want to start at the Welcome Center at the Frazier Museum on historic Whiskey Row in downtown Louisville.

You can enjoy this road trip in a weekend, or extend it out for a week to learn more about and visit Kentucky historic sites.

june road trip ideas

7. Million Dollar Highway, Colorado

The Million Dollar Highway section of US Highway 550 connects Ouray and Silverton, Colorado.

If you enjoy mountain views, and don’t mind a windy road with steep drops on one side, then you can’t beat this road trip adventure!

The road climbs up three very steep high mountain passes: Red Mountain Pass (over 11,000 feet!), Molas Pass and Coal Bank Pass. Take your time and be prepared to stop often to photograph the endless views!

There are cool things to see and do along the Million Dollar Highway: ghost towns, hot springs, hike, fish and more!

june road trip ideas

8. Road to Hana, Hawai

The Road to Hana is the top attraction on the island of Maui, Hawaii. When taking this Hawaii scenic drive, remember it’s the journey, not the destination.

You’ll see vibrant green cliffs, stunning waterfalls, vast ocean views, colorful beaches with black, red and white sand, beautiful gardens and trails to explore.

Because this road is so popular, we recommend you start early – really early! When you start later in the morning, you’ll experience traffic and congestion which takes away from the beauty of the place.

You must do your research about this road trip before starting out to make sure it’s a drive you want to do. There are 620 curves, many one-lane narrow bridges, limited turnouts or parking, and it’s crowded. Pack your patience!

june road trip ideas

9. The Parks Highway, Alaska

The Parks Highway , also known as the George Parks Highway, runs between Anchorage and Fairbanks. It’s the most direct highway access to Denali National Park and Preserve from either city.

The entire route is 362 miles through Alaska’s untamed wilderness. Be on the lookout for wildlife like brown or black bear and maybe even moose!

During this road trip, if weather cooperates, you can enjoy the magnificent view of the Denali mountain that stands at a staggering 20,310 feet!

june road trip ideas

10. Pacific Coast Highway, California

The Pacific Coast Highway is a road trip that runs along the Pacific Coast in California for 550 miles from San Francisco to Los Angeles.

You can start in the south, but we recommend you start in the north so you’re in the lane closest to the ocean.

Plan about 3 days to make the most of this route and all the stops along the way: Monterey, Pebble Beach, Carmel-by-the-Sea, Big Sur, Hearst Castle, Cambria, Morrow Bay, San Luis Obispo, Pismo Beach, Solvan, and Santa Barbara.

photograph canyonlands in the spring

11. Utah National Parks, The Mighty Five

The Mighty Five Utah National Parks are: Arches, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef and Zion. A road trip to explore each park should be on everyone’s US National Park bucket list!

In addition to the national parks, there are amazing Utah state parks , national monuments, hiking trails, offroad trails, scenic drives and more that you can explore along the route.

You’ll see stunning sunrises, sunsets, landscapes, starry skies, the Milky Way and so much more! Your camera will have a workout capturing the unique beauty on the road trip!

Here’s an amazing Utah National Park road trip itinerary to see all 5 parks in Utah!

june road trip ideas

12. Hot Springs, Idaho

A road trip to enjoy the hot springs in Idaho is a fun and unique adventure.

Many of the hot springs are surrounded by fantastic landscapes which accentuates a relaxing atmosphere while soaking in the water.

We like this itinerary to enjoy the hot springs from Boise to Stanley .

lighthouse along the coast of Connecticut

15. Coastal Drive, Connecticut

The Northeast has beautiful forests and coastlines to explore, making it perfect for summer vacations.
