Testimonials

Kishan was my guide for 3 days and really made my visit to Chitwan extra special. His knowledge of the the animals and birds, their habits and habitats is phenomenal. In addition, he really cares about his local area, the people and their way of life. You get a good insight into the whole eco-system of the area, which makes the experience much more immersive. I would highly recommend walking in the jungle and the local area. It is a great way to get a real feel for what is going on. I highly recommend Kishan as your guide to learn about this fascinating part of the world.

Debasish Chakraborty(Google Map)

The best tour operator guide I have come across in Nepal. He is so cooperate & aslo a good man.

Mark(Google Map)

They have some fine mountainbikes for rent! Also offers a lot of tours for very reasonable prices.

Julia Lindner(Google Map)

Super friendly welcome! Kishan is one of the warmest people I have ever met!! I had a really nice stay in Chitwan

Nicki(Tripadvisor)

We hired two mountain bikes for the day for 1000 rupees each and they were good bikes with comfortable saddles, which you need on the local roads which are more often than not dirt tracks.

If you do hire bikes I would recommend downloading the Maps.me app and download the map for this area. It shows you where you are on the map without using up your data. There are few if any road signs and without it we would have got very lost!

The young man at the shop was very friendly and helpful and I would recommend going to the shop which is on the main high street if you want to hire bikes.

S.H(Tripadvisor)

If you are looking for a guide who will show you nature and wild animals in peace and quiet away from the tourist hustle and bustle, you have come to the right place. You can explore the jungle by bike, on foot, by canoe or by jeep.

The guide was extremely knowledgeable about the flora and fauna of the jungle, and was able to point out all sorts of interesting plants and animals. Not only that, but the guide was also very skilled at navigating through the dense jungle, and made sure that we stayed on track and didn’t get lost. I felt completely safe and secure with him leading the way. I saw rhinos, deer, bears, crocodiles and lots of different birds.

Overall, I would highly recommend this guide to anyone looking to explore the jungle. It was a truly unforgettable experience, and I couldn’t have done it without the expertise of the guide.

Our Jungle Safari Vehicle

Safari vehicles play a pivotal role in capturing great photographs during jungle safaris. In India, the Maruti Gypsy 4×4 is commonly used for this purpose. These vehicles are designed with three rows of seats, accommodating up to eight passengers. Their open structure and elevated seating arrangement offer excellent visibility, enabling photographers to get clear, unobstructed shots of wildlife and landscapes. The 4×4 capability ensures that the vehicles can navigate through diverse and challenging terrains, bringing photographers closer to nature’s wonders. The front row is reserved for the park driver and park guide or naturalist. The center and back seats are occupied by guests or photographers.

We provide seating just two passengers per row for best comfort and convenience. This layout gives your gadgets more room and freedom to move about, so improving your photography experience. This arrangement guarantees enough room and flexibility for capturing the ideal view of the surroundings’ wildlife and landscape.

Best of Central America

44 days | colourful villages, jungle safaris and beachside breaks, from mexico to panama.

Toucan sits on branch in Monteverde jungle

Explore incredible worlds above and below the water through some of Central America's best on this 44-day adventure. Amble down the Yucatan Peninsula to the island paradise of Caye Caulker, then cut inland to the lush jungle around Tikal, cruise to the wide river Rio Dulce and end up among the clouds in Panajachel and Antigua. Continue to the relaxing beach vibes of the Pacific Coast of El Salvador, spot colourful birds perched on the historic facades of Suchitoto and explore the historic cities of Leon and Granada in Nicaragua. Stand in the shadow of mighty Arenal Volcano and spot sloths among the canopy of Monteverde, then admire the towns and steamy jungles of Costa Rice and Panama, stopping off at the stunning islands of Bocas del Toro. With plenty of moments to meet the locals and try the region’s varied cuisines, you can’t go wrong on this carefree Central American journey.

Trip overview

  • Experience the multiple sides of Central America, whether slumbering on the sands of Caye Caulker and Bocas del Toro, gazing at the pyramids of Tikal or shopping in the vibrant markets of Chichicastenango.
  • Get to know contemporary Maya life during a homestay in San Juan La Laguna, a village on the shores of Lake Atitlan, where you can share meals and conversation with a local family.
  • Hike, cycle or zip-line through Costa Rica’s steamy cloud forests of Monteverde – there’s so many ways to experience the lush canopies and unique Central American wildlife.
  • Cruise up the Rio Dulce to your waterfront jungle lodge, then maybe grab a beer and relax while the sounds of nature fill the air.
  • Put your chef hat on and help prepare a traditional Caribbean dinner in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca.
  • With so much to see and do, Costa Rica can sometimes be expensive. Expect to pay more than you would in other Central American countries for a lot of things.
  • This trip includes some long travel days by local transport and private vehicles. Space can be tight, but it’s all part of the adventure and a great way to get to know your fellow travellers and watch the passing scenery.
  • Central America is generally hot and humid year-round. At nighttime and in locations at higher elevations it can get chilly. Protect yourself from the sun, bring light clothing you can layer and a waterproof jacket, and stay hydrated. Air conditioning may not always be available in your rooms. Occasionally, properties may require an additional charge for air conditioning.
  • The homestay is a wonderful opportunity to witness everyday local life. Conditions during your homestay in San Juan La Laguna are basic. Your rooms will be multi-share, and the bathroom will most likely be shared with the rest of the family. A hearty home-cooked breakfast and dinner will be served during your stay, which can be a lot more basic than what you're used to.
  • There will be times when you have to walk with your luggage, and for this reason, we recommend packing light and using a backpack or something easy to carry.

View the itinerary for departures between 27 January 2024 - 31 December 2024

Hola! Welcome to Mexico. Your adventure begins in Playa del Carmen with a welcome meeting at 6 pm. If you arrive early and are lucky enough to have extra time in this beachside playground, maybe try your hand (and feet and lungs) at snorkelling in the freshwater rock pools (cenotes). Maybe stroll along the white sands or reef dive on Cozumel. After the meeting, perhaps head out for a cocktail and a few tacos with your new travel buddies.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Playa del Carmen - Bicycle Rental (per day) - MXN273
  • Playa del Carmen - Ferry to Cozumel (Round-trip Ticket) - MXN525

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late, please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

This morning, hop on a local bus to one stunning example of a cenote – Cenote Azul. There you can swim, dive or snorkel in the natural open-air pool, basking in the beauty of your surroundings. Then return to Playa Del Carmen, where you’ll have a free afternoon to explore this beachside paradise at your leisure. You might like to continue the underwater activities and keep your eyes peeled for rays, moray eels and turtles among the coral-clad reefs. If you’d rather leave the flippers behind and adventure on land, catch a local bus and travel south to Tulum, where white-sand beaches and Maya ruins are just an hour and a half away. In the evening, you could grab a few of your fellow travellers and find a good spot to watch the sunset – muy bien!

  • Playa del Carmen - Cenote Azul visit
  • Playa del Carmen - Half-day tour of Tulum Archaeological site (Entrance fee, Guide & Transport) - MXN900

On your final morning in Playa del Carmen, maybe take an early morning stroll to the beach and dip your toes in the sand or simply let the world pass you by with a coffee at a local cafe. Then head to your next stop in Bacalar – said to be the first settlement of the Itza tribe, who would go on to create Chichen Itza. Here you’ll have an included lunch and the chance to relax at the Lake of Seven Colours – thanks to the various stunning shades of blue it adopts throughout the day. If you’d like, you could also hop onboard a boat tour of the lake. Then continue on to Chetumal – a quiet city close to the border of Belize, this place makes for the perfect stop before tomorrow’s adventure to Caye Caulker.

  • Bacalar - Beach club entry
  • Bacalar - Lagoon of 7 Colours Boat Tour - MXN630

Today’s total travel time is approximately 4 hours.

Bid adios to Mexico early this morning as you head south to Belize. After border formalities, arrive in Belize City then hop in a water taxi to the island of Caye Caulker. When you arrive, get acquainted with the island on a guided walk with your leader. Belize is the only English-speaking country in Central America, which will make chatting with locals much easier. After, you’ll join in on a cooking class with a local family, learning how to make a famous Belizean meal with chicken, rice and beans. Then you’re free to see more of Caye Caulker in the evening. Be aware that there may be crocodiles in the split area that separates the north and south of the island, so it’s best to take caution while swimming and exploring the beaches.

  • Caye Caulker - Leader-led orientation walk
  • Caye Caulker - Cooking Class
  • Caye Caulker - Stand-up paddleboard hire (per hour) - BZD44

Today’s total travel time is approximately 5 hours.

Today is free for you to explore the island that surrounds you, or just to simply relax. If you feel like snorkelling, ask your leader about organising a trip to the colourful coral reef nearby, or maybe head further afield to Hol Chan Marine Reserve, home to the world’s second-longest coral reef. Manatee spotting is perfect for nature lovers, or you could take a stroll and find a swaying palm tree with your name on it – they make the perfect place to nap, read a book and soak up the island vibes on a beach day.

  • Caye Caulker - Manatee boat tour (Incl. transport & guide) - BZD254
  • Caye Caulker - Full day Catamaran snorkeling tour in Hol Chan Marine Reserve-(gear, guide and transport included) - BZD242
  • Caye Caulker - Full day speed boat-(gear, guide and transport included) - BZD242
  • Caye Caulker - Sunset Sailing - BZD126

What’s better than one day in paradise? Two, of course! Wake up whenever you like, because you’ve got another free day. Like any good seaside paradise, Caye Caulker is home to super fresh seafood, which you can dig into with your feet planted in the sand at one of the many ‘floor free’ outdoor restaurants. The island's famous lobsters are available between 15 June and 15 February, and you can expect to pay far less than at home (though more than your average island meal). You could even grab some grilled shrimp and a rum and coke made with firewater from a roadside stall to really get into the island spirit.

  • Caye Caulker - Bicycle Rental (per day) - USD8

From the islands to the highlands, you’ll bid farewell to Caye Caulker today and catch a ferry to Belize City, then a bus to San Ignacio. When you arrive, your leader will take you on a walking tour of San Ignacio and its twin sister Santa Elena, giving you a sense of how vibrant the local Garifuna and Maya communities are. Tonight, maybe head out in search of a classic Maya dish like cochinita pibil (slow-roasted pork marinated in citrus).

  • San Ignacio - Leader-led orientation walk

Today’s total travel time is approximately 4.5 hours.

Local buses in Belize are a little more basic and crowded than you may have experienced elsewhere in Central America. Get ready for a stop-and-go experience on the journey – there are very few official bus stops in Belize, so the bus will stop as roadside passengers require.

Today is free for you to discover San Ignacio at your own pace. This beautiful town is surrounded by fast-flowing rivers, waterfalls and Maya ruins, making it the ideal base. If you’re a bit of a history buff, maybe take a day trip to Xunantunich – an impressive Maya ceremonial site on a hill overlooking the countryside. Getting to the site is half the fun, as you'll need to take a hand-cranked ferry to cross the river. Also nearby is the cave of Actun Tunichil Muknal – a living museum of Maya relics. Wade through cool waters to find ceramic pots and crystallised skeletons preserved by the calcium-rich environment of the cave for over 1400 years. Easily spooked? Maybe you'd prefer a cave with fewer (as far as we know) skeletons, like the one in Mountain Pine Ridge. In the late afternoon, the barbecue stalls of Santa Elena start to set up for the dinner rush. It's only a 15-minute walk, so consider wandering over to enjoy a juicy chicken leg and a chat with the locals.

  • San Ignacio - Actun Tunichil Muknal Caves (Incl. entry, guide, transport & lunch) - BZD263
  • San Ignacio - Butterfly Farm (incl. transport) - BZD158
  • San Ignacio - Cave tubing (incl. entrance, guide & transport) - BZD200
  • San Ignacio - Iguana Conservation Project (entrance fee) - BZD24
  • San Ignacio - Xunantunich Ruins entry - BZD11

Rise and shine for an 8 am taxi ride to the Belize-Guatemala border. Once you've crossed over, board a bus to Tikal National Park. Here, there will be time to buy lunch before visiting the impressive archaeological site with a local guide. Towering above the jungle, the five granite temples of Tikal are an imposing sight and one of the most magnificent Maya ruins. Hidden in the evergreen forest is a maze of smaller structures waiting to be explored. The energetic can climb to the top of the ruins for spectacular views over the canopy and the chance to spot toucans, macaws and other colourful birds.

  • Tikal National Park - Archaeological site (Entrance fee, Guide & Transport)

Today’s total travel time is approximately 2.5 hours.

After breakfast you’ll depart for Flores, where your leader will take you on an orientation walk on the island. Then, continue by private minivan to Rio Dulce before transferring to your hotel by boat. The easiest way to get back into town is also on the water – a journey that can be organised through the hotel. Alternatively, a 40-minute jungle walk will get you there. The hotel is a great place to relax and look over the water, with reasonably priced meals and drinks served in the hotel restaurant. Now that you are back in a Spanish-speaking nation, why not join an informal Spanish lesson led by your leader?

  • Lodge (1 night)

Start your day with a birdwatching walk along your accommodation’s trails, lead by a local guide. Then, and with plenty of free time today, consider taking advantage of some optional activities. Maybe take a scenic boat trip down the river to the coastal enclave of Livingston for a taste of Creole-Caribbean culture. This laidback town on the Caribbean coast feels very different from the rest of Guatemala thanks to its Garifuna population. Or maybe go boating on the lake, take a tour to spot local manatees or explore nearby San Felipe Fort.

  • Rio Dulce - Guided jungle birdwatching
  • Rio Dulce - Natural Hot Springs (entrance fee and transport) - GTQ210
  • Rio Dulce - Quirigua Ruins (entrance fee) - GTQ95
  • Rio Dulce - San Felipe Fort (entrance fee) - GTQ89
  • Livingston - River boat trip to Garifuna town - Free

Leave the 'Sweet River' behind and travel by private minibus to the city of Antigua. The road between Rio Dulce and Guatemala City is one of the busiest in the country. Traffic is slow, there are frequent road works and many, many slow trucks – be armed with patience, music and a good book and the journey will be easier to handle. Though there's not much time in Antigua today, you owe it to yourself to reward your patience with a tamale (meat and dough steamed in a corn leaf). You could also give pepian a try (rich dark sauce served with vegetables and meat, usually chicken).

Today’s total travel time is approximately 9 hours.

Today, travel on the winding roads to Chichicastenango – home to perhaps the most colourful market in the country! Nicknamed Chichi market, locals come from surrounding villages on Thursdays and Sundays to sell their wares and the streets are lined with stalls offering multi-coloured textiles and fresh produce. Visit a local Mayan Shaman and do a little shopping at the market, then continue to Panajachel. Located on Lake Atitlan with distant volcanoes looming in the background, Panajachel has a thriving market, great eateries and many water-based activities. Your leader will take you on a brief orientation walk of the town and then the rest of the afternoon is free for you to explore. Why not go for a swim, wander the streets or kayak on the lake?

  • Chichicastenango - Market Visit
  • Chichicastenango - Shaman Visit
  • Panajachel - Leader-led orientation walk

Today's total travel time is approximately 4.5 hours.

You may want to purchase a few snacks at Chichi market for your time at the homestay on Lake Atitlan, as the meals there can be very basic.

This morning after breakfast, take a boat to San Juan La Laguna – a small Maya village overlooking Lake Atitlan and the first community to ban single-use plastic. Here, you’ll witness a textile weaving demonstration, seeing how they use local materials and traditional dyeing techniques. Try out some of your newly learnt Spanish to chat with the locals and take a tour of their medicinal garden, watching how they use ancient techniques to transform plants into medicine - knowledge passed from mothers to daughters for hundreds of years. Tonight, you’ll be staying with multiple families within the community in small groups. Enjoy a homecooked dinner with your host family and spend the night here – a perfect opportunity to get to know them a little better and immerse yourself in local life.

  • Homestay (shared accommodation) (1 night)
  • San Juan La Laguna - Traditional Maya Homestay
  • San Juan La Laguna - Water taxi to Santiago (Return) - GTQ63

Hit the road again this morning and make the journey back to Antigua – in 1773, the city was destroyed by an earthquake, but many of the colonial buildings have been carefully restored, and the architecture from its glory days can still be seen. On the way, stop at Santa Apolonia – one of the last communities in Guatemala to make pottery with traditional Maya techniques. The ancient Maya people could produce perfectly rounded pottery without a potter’s wheel! Here, the local women use their hands, as they move in a circular motion to produce amazing pieces. Watch a demonstration and then try it for yourself. Continue to Antigua, where your leader will take you on an orientation walk. Tonight, maybe take part in a dancing lesson – many dancing schools offer hourly lessons, so you'll be able to perfect your moves.

  • Antigua - Leader-led orientation walk
  • Santa Apolonia - Traditional Pottery Demonstration
  • Antigua - Salsa-dance Lesson (per hour) - GTQ105

Enjoy a free day exploring photogenic Antigua today. Maybe check out the ChocoMuseo, two blocks away from central park. Learn all about chocolate, which was first documented by the Guatemalan Maya, as well as its historical importance. Or maybe grab a coffee from one of the myriad shops in central park, sit back, relax and enjoy Antigua's chilled-out vibes. If you're feeling adventurous, ask your leader about booking an optional tour to one of the nearby volcanoes.

  • Antigua - Half Day local towns, coffee and craft beer tour - USD95
  • Antigua - Half Day Pacaya Volcano with lunch - USD115
  • Antigua - Acatenango Volcano Overnight Adventure - USD170
  • Antigua - City Tour with lunch - USD70

Enjoy another free day to explore the city, with nothing scheduled until a meeting at 6 pm to welcome any new travellers joining you on your adventure. Maybe grab some roasted beans from a street vendor and munch them while you stroll around. If you’ve got a historical bent, perhaps check out the 18th-century ruins of the Monastery of Santa Clara.

As this is a combination trip, the travellers in your group and your group leader are likely to change today.

There will be a welcome meeting at 6 pm to discuss the next stage of your itinerary and meet travellers joining you. It’s important that you attend the meeting as your new leader will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

Rise and shine early this morning to beat the rush-hour traffic around Antigua. Departing at around 7 am, you’ll drive towards Copan. Along the way, watch the passing scenery and learn about local life in Guatemala as you head towards the border. Cross into Honduras, arriving in the charming town of Copan in the early afternoon. While most people use Copan as a base to explore the nearby ruins, there are plenty of other points of interest, both along the cobblestone streets and set into the lush surroundings. Maybe get started in the Central Plaza and follow your nose to a cafe for the afternoon.

Your travel time today will be approximately 8 hours.

This morning, meet up with a local guide and explore the World Heritage-listed ruins of Copan – the southernmost of the great Maya sites. It's unique because of the numerous elaborate stelae (carved columns) still intact among temples, excavated vaults and walls inscribed with ancient faces. After your exploration (don’t forget your camera today!) the rest of the afternoon is free to choose your own adventure. Maybe check out some fine feathered friends at the Macaw Mountain Park or visit the Temple of Rosalila. You could also head to the nearby natural hot springs - this optional tour gives you hours of soaking in mud, steaming natural baths and refreshing pools in the lush jungle, with an included dinner.

  • Copan - Guided visit to Archaeological site
  • Copan - Natural Hot Springs & Dinner - USD53

You’ll wave goodbye to Copan this morning and head across the border to El Salvador. It’s a long travel day, so make sure you’ve got a good book or your favourite road trip games handy. When you arrive in Suchitoto, you’ll head out on a leader-led orientation walk of the town – widely considered the cultural capital of El Salvador. Admire the elaborate building facades, get your bearings and enjoy the surroundings. Then, get your chef’s hat on with a pupusa-making cooking class in a private home. Pupusa (cornmeal flatbreads) is a classic Salvadorian recipe from the Pipil culture and is usually stuffed with some delicious ingredients, like cheese or chicharron (fried pork).

  • Suchitoto - Salvadoran Pupusa cooking demonstration
  • Suchitoto - Leader led orientation walk

Your travel time today will be approximately 7 hours.

Today is a free day in Suchitoto. The town overlooks the Embalse Cerron Grande – also known as Lago Suchitlan, this freshwater lake is a haven for migrating birds, particularly falcons and hawks. Maybe grab a historically-minded quartet for a guided walk through Cinquera Forest, where guerrilla fighters used the forest as cover during the Civil War. Or just relax around town, in a local café or at your accommodation.

  • Suchitoto - Town tour (it requires a minimum of 3 travellers to operate) - USD32
  • Suchitoto - War historic walk at Cinquera Forest (requires a minimum of 3 travellers to operate) - USD58

This morning, head to a local designer’s home for an indigo-dying demonstration – Suchitoto is one of the best places in the world to produce indigo (used to dye clothing or other items blue). You’ll visit a local designer transforming colonial tradition into modern design and learn the history of the indigo trade. This small enterprise supports single mothers by providing them with an income for their children’s education, food and independence. Watch the demonstration, then get hands-on and try it for yourself! To decide who gets to take the creation home, the group will hold a raffle (are you feeling lucky?). After, you’ll drive to the Pacific Coast of El Salvador, home to some amazing dark-sand beaches and some of the best surf spots in the country.

  • Suchitoto - Indigo Dyeing Demonstration

Your travel time today will be approximately 5 hours.

Your accommodation in El Cuco is the most basic on your trip—a local-style beach hotel with a laid-back atmosphere. Please note that only cold water showers are available.

Today, you're free as a bird to explore the beautiful Pacific Coast at your own pace. Alternatively, simply sit back and relax in a hammock on the beach and soak up the sunshine with a drink – life’s good.

Rise nice and early for a full day of travel by private vehicle. Cross the border at El Amatillo and then head into Honduras, where you’ll stop for lunch. After, there’s another border crossing at Guasaule before you reach Leon – the second-largest city in Nicaragua. When you arrive, join your leader on an orientation walk through the charming city streets to get your bearings. Leon is a relatively quiet city, which makes strolling the murals and contemporary architecture a real treat! Tonight, maybe head out to dinner with your group – as always, your leader will have the best recommendations.

  • Leon - Leader led orientation walk

Your travel time today will be approximately 6.5 hours.

The Nicaraguan border crossing can be confusing and disorderly, so please pay close attention to your leader’s instructions. At this border crossing, you’ll need to pay a USD 12 fee, payable in cash. There have been recent reports that Border agents will ask for proof of Yellow Fever vaccination even if arriving from a country without known Yellow Fever risk. Refusal of entry and/or requests for cash fees may occur if you do not carry proof of vaccination, which your leader cannot control.

Today is a free day to make the most of Leon. Maybe visit the street food area behind the Lady of Grace Cathedral and try a Nica taco (made with maize, the taco is rolled, deep fried and then served with shredded cabbage smothered in cream). You could also take on a thrilling volcano sandboarding adventure on the black slopes of Cerro Negro Volcano. Maybe you’d just like to explore the city’s contemporary art or wander the Leon Cathedral.

  • Leon - Volcano Sand Boarding - USD53
  • Leon - Leon Art Center - USD2

This morning, you’ll drive to the oldest city in the 'New World' – Granada. Along the way, you’ll have the chance to stretch your legs and admire the view at Laguna Apoyo, a volcanic crater lake formed around 23,000 years ago. Then, stop in at the lakeside town of Masaya, where you’ll go on an orientation walk with your leader and get the chance to browse the stalls at the town’s famous artisan market. Have some free time to find some lunch in Masaya, then continue on to Grenada. Featuring Moorish and Andalusian architecture, Granada is set on the banks of Lake Nicaragua and is surrounded by active volcanoes. When you arrive, your leader will take you on an orientation walk through the leafy Parque Central and 'La Calzada' – a busy pedestrian street with plenty of bars and restaurants. The afternoon is yours to explore the city at your own pace.

  • Masaya - Town & Market Visit
  • Granada - La Laguna de Apoyo Viewpoint

Your travel time today will be approximately 6 hours.

This morning you’ll have breakfast with your group at Cafe de las Sonrisas – a café run entirely by deaf people. The owner is aiming to bridge the gap and inspire other business owners to employ local people living with disabilities. After, the rest of the day is yours. Maybe hit the Convento y Museo San Francisco and view the collection of Indigenous stone statues. Hundreds of evergreen islets dot the waters of vast Lake Nicaragua and you can spend a few hours exploring them by boat, or hire a kayak and find your own way around, waving at the fisherman who live in wooden huts along the way. Just remember not to swim, as freshwater sharks live in the water!

  • Granada - Breakfast at El Cafe de las Sonrisas
  • Granada - Mombacho Volcano hike - USD32
  • Granada - Monkey Island boat tour - NIO455

Today is another early start as you get ready for a full day of travel. Journey to Monteverde, where you can begin exploring this afternoon on an orientation walk with your leader. Monteverde was founded as an agricultural community in 1951 by a group of North American Quakers. These environmentally aware settlers also established a small wildlife sanctuary, which has since grown into the internationally renowned Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Preserve. Cloud forests are like rainforests, but instead, draw their water from a semi-permanent cloud covering the region. This is truly a nature lover's paradise! More than 2000 plant species, 320 bird species and 100 mammal species call Monteverde home.

  • Monteverde - Leader-led orientation walk

A USD 3 fee is required when exiting Nicaragua. Reaching the Costa Rican border also requires a 1 km walk, where you must carry your luggage. Proof of onward travel is usually required to enter Costa Rica, so if you're flying out of San Jose, bring a printed copy of your flight details in case the border officials ask to see them.

Begin the day with a special morning brew, as you're welcomed into a local’s home for breakfast and the chance to sample some local Costa Rican coffees. Then, head out to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, where you’ll join a local guide to walk the reserve’s trails. They’ll share information on the fascinating biodiversity of the region and lend their expert eye (and spotting scope) to searching for the wonderful wildlife. Look out for the resplendent quetzal and listen for the sounds of howler monkeys and the unmistakable call of the three-wattled bellbird. Once your tour is complete, you’re welcome to stay and continue exploring the reserve or return to your accommodation to relax.

This morning, drive to the shores of Lake Arenal, where you’ll take a boat across the lake to the little town of La Fortuna. On a clear day, you'll have fantastic views of the surrounding area. Watching the massive Arenal Volcano loom larger and larger as you approach is a spectacular sight. Once you reach La Fortuna, take another vehicle to the hotel, then freshen up and head out on a leader-led orientation walk. La Fortuna is a favourite among travel writers for a reason – words like picturesque and breathtaking spring to mind when trying to describe this town in the shadow of the volcano.

  • La Fortuna - Leader led orientation walk

Your travel time today will be approximately 3 hours.

Due to limited accommodation availability in La Fortuna, rooms will occasionally be on a multi-share basis (single-gender) for the next two nights.

Or maybe check out the 70-m-high La Fortuna waterfall set in the middle of the rainforest and hit the lake on a stand-up paddleboard. A boat safari in Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge offers the opportunity to see lizards, crocodiles and tropical birds in their natural habitat, so if you’re craving more wildlife, this option is perfect.

The Jungle Book

12 days/11 nights.

Take a spectacular adventure through India's national parks: jungle cats in Ranthambore, Bengal Tigers in Bandhavgarh, and leopard in Kanha. Kanha National Park is also the popular landscape depicted in Rudyard Kipling's  The Jungle Book.  By car, jeep, or elephant, discover the diversity of India's wildlife. Bring your camera!

Season: October—March

Delhi Arrival

Namaste. Welcome to India! You will be met by our representative and transferred to your hotel.

Delhi is a bustling metropolis that incorporates the ancient with the modern. Amidst the skyscrapers, the monuments stand as a silent reminder to India's legacy. Driving from the airport, you will be impressed with Delhi's spacious, tree-lined streets and garden parks. Overnight at the hotel.

Chandni Chowk (2)

After breakfast, join a friend of Sodha Travel for an exclusive rickshaw experience in Chandni Chowk.   This is not your standard guidebook tour! Witness the architectural marvels, the multicolored facades, beautifully decorated shops, ethnically dressed locals and the fragrances emanating from the potpourri of eateries that line the historical alleys.

Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan (1592-1666) built the walled city of Delhi on the banks of holy River Yamuna.  It had a magnificent palace known as Red Fort, impressive mansions, enchanting bazaars, elegant shrines, royal gardens and fountains at every corner to romance ones' senses.  The Emperor’s beloved daughter Jahanara designed a major street called Chandni Chowk in front of Red Fort, with a canal running down the center and pools at major intersections reflecting the moonlight.  During the British regime, the street underwent major changes and since then this area has witnessed some of the most important events in Indian history. Today these splendid ruins and tales of valor are a testimony of the evolution of the times.  Chandni Chowk truly reflects the national unity, secularism and diversity of India. The tour covers 20 main sites including palaces, mansions, elegant shrines and colorful bazaars.

Continue to  Mehrauli and the Qutub Minar complex . Originally an ancient Islamic monument, the Qutub Minar is the tallest tower in India. Built of red sandstone and marble, the minar is not without controversy. Some believe it was built as a tower of victory to signify Muslim rule in the country, while skeptics claim it was erected to call the devoted to prayer. The complex also houses the first mosque to be built in India and an iron pillar that mysteriously has a high resistance to corrosion, even after being exposed to the natural elements for centuries. Also, drive by the India Gate, Parliament, and the President’s residence.

Evening at leisure and overnight.

Delhi - Agra

In the morning, board your executive express train to Agra. Upon arrival, meet your guide and visit the  Agra Fort , a magnificent citadel with marble palaces, ornate alcoves and terrace pavilions.

Continue to lunch with a local family .

In the evening, enjoy a heritage walk in Old Town . Step off the tourist track and visit the markets and local places of worship. Under the guidance of an expert, explore the busy streets for lost stories and past traditions. Learn about the architecture, history, and the age-old customs of this iconic city. This tour is conducted around the old market area and includes a visit to Agra's landmarks, such as the Jama Masjid, the spice market, and the famous goddess temple before ending the tour with an unusual view of the Taj from the Yamuna.

If time allows, we also recommend a visit to Sheroes café. Away from the marble majesty of the Taj Mahal, the café is run entirely by victims of acid attacks so they can be self-sufficient and raise their families. Evening at leisure and overnight.

Agra - Ranthambore

In the morning, enjoy a   sunrise visit to the Taj Mahal . (Note: Due to weather and heavy fog, a sunset viewing is recommended in December/January.) Built in the 17th century by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal, the Taj took over 22 years and 22,000 men to build. The monument is truly a wonder of the world. Return to your hotel for breakfast. Continue to the Agra Fort, a magnificent citadel with marble palaces, ornate alcoves, and terrace pavilions.

Later, drive to Ranthambore (5 hours). Ranthambore National Park is one of the  most filmed wildlife reserves in the world . It was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1955 and became a part of Project Tiger in 1973. As the park is relatively small, guests often view leopards, tigers, and jungle cats. Overnight in Ranthambore.

  • Ranthambore

Today, enjoy  exclusive morning and afternoon game drives  by jeep to explore the varied wildlife. Bring your camera for some spectacular encounters in this preserved land. Overnight in Ranthambore.

Ranthambore - Jaipur

In the morning, drive to Jaipur (4.5 hours). Jaipur, the vibrant capital of Rajasthan, owes its name, foundation and planning to the great astronomer and warrior Maharaja Jai Singh II. The city is fondly called the “Pink City” due to the pink colored buildings and avenues.

In the evening, visit Elefantastic . Spend quality time with the elephants at this renowned sanctuary that provides a critical foundation for breaking the cycle of elephant tourism. Guests can spend time feeding, bathing, painting, and walking the rescued and rehabilitated elephants, but rides are not permitted. The founder, Rahul, also supports the welfare and education of the caretakers and their families through the human-elephant interaction program. Overnight in Jaipur.

Pink Palace Jaipur

Start your morning with a visit to the   Amber Fort . Perched on a hill, the fort is made of sandstone and marble and is one of the most popular attractions in Rajasthan. In the fort, you will see magnificent palaces and halls covered with mirrored mosaics. Note: You may ascend the fort by elephant or jeep.

After lunch, explore Jaipur city. Visit City Palace , a blend of Rajasthani and Mughal architecture that is still occupied by the Royal family. Also view the Palace of the Winds (Hawa Mahal) and Jantar Mantar , the solar observatory built in the 18 th century. It includes a set of some 20 main fixed instruments. They are monumental examples in masonry of known instruments but which in many cases have specific characteristics of their own. Designed for the observation of astronomical positions with the naked eye, they embody several architectural and instrumental innovations. This is the most significant, most comprehensive, and the best preserved of India's historic observatories. It is an expression of the astronomical skills and cosmological concepts of the court of a scholarly prince at the end of the Mughal period.

Jaipur - Bandhavgarh

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Jabalpur via Delhi. Upon arrival, drive to Bandhavgarh (4.5 hours). Bandhavgarh National Park is one of the  few havens in Asia for the Bengal Tiger , considered the pride of the jungle. During the afternoon discover the extensive variety of animals: bear, sloth, tiger, leopard, and sambar. Overnight in Bandhavgarh.

  • Bandhavgarh

A full day spent either by jeep or elephant to view the wildlife. Overnight in Bandhavgarh.

Bandhavgarh - Kanha

In the morning, drive to Kanha National Park (4 hours)). The lush sal and bamboo forests, grassy meadows, and ravines of Kanha provided inspiration to Rudyard Kipling when writing  The Jungle Book . Kanha National Park is one of Asia's premier wildlife reserves. In 1973, it was included among the first tiger reserves under Project Tiger. Evening at leisure and overnight.

ST's Hotel Recommendation

Banjaar tola.

The luxury tents feature spectacular glass doors that lead out to a floating verandah with a stunning view of the Banjaar River and the core zone of Kanha National Park.

Today enjoy an exclusive morning and afternoon jeep safari . Observe black buck, deer, chital, gaur, and leopard. Overnight in Kanha.

Today, transfer to the airport in Jabalpur (4.5 hours) for your flight to Delhi or Mumbai. Upon arrival, connect to your onward flight. Bon Voyage!

EcoTravel packages are offered in different prices ranges – deluxe, superior, standard and budget. What exactly are the differences between these categories?

In order to meet the different needs of our lovely guests, EcoTravel’ Sumatra Tours come in different price categories. The Superior Package with room type Jungle View Room at EcoTravel Cottages in Bukit Lawang is always listed in detail on our website. At our partner Tabo Cottages at Lake Toba, our EcoTravel guests will stay in a Junior Suite. The higher price of the Deluxe Option results from the best room option in Bukit Lawang ( Jungle View Suite / EcoTravel Cottages ) and our choice at Lake Toba (Toba Suite / Tabo Cottages). Rooms chosen for our Standard Option are smaller and in a lower price range. Guests will stay right next to our EcoTravel Cottages in our new accommodation “Hangout@EcoTravel” (Orangutan Room/Jungle View Room ). At Lake Toba you will stay in Tabo Cottages’ Batak Villa. In contrast to a variety of room types and rates in Bukit Lawang and at Lake Toba, there is only one room type chosen to accommodate EcoTravel guests at our partners in Medan, Berastagi and on Pulau Weh (Deli River Hotel/Deluxe Room, Nachelle Homestay/Volcano View Room, Freddies Santai Sumur Tiga/Seaview Beach Appartement). However, in cooperation with all our accommodation partners we are giving our best to present you with the best value for money. Note: EcoTravel guests who have to watch their budget are very welcome to book our small Batak Room at EcoTravel Cottages  or our Budget Room at The Hangout @EcoTravel together with one of our popular Bukit Lawang packages (Hello Jungle, Orangutans & Elephants or The Jungle Book).

Your website lists fixed starting dates for your packages. We arrive in Medan one day earlier, could we shift the start of our tour?

To keep up our good service we run all our tours and jungle treks in Bukit Lawang on fixed days suiting our well selected Sumatra touring packages . Arrival/departure in Bukit Lawang is usually on Fridays/Saturdays/Mondays. Some Sumatra tours also start on Tuesdays or Thursdays . However, we can tailor each package to match your specific requirements! It is possible to add some nights before or after a package. You are also welcome to skip, change or add some tours in Bukit Lawang and/or extend your stay with our partners on Lake Toba, in Medan or on Pulau Weh. We will do our best to suit your needs – subject to availability! And if all this still doesn’t match your travel plans, why not join our jungle trekking tours only and book accommodation and transport individually somewhere else? Unfortunately, for organisational reasons, our jungle treks cannot be booked separately in advance, as we only offer our trekking packages. We apologize for this inconvenience. Nevertheless, “walk-in” guests are always welcome at our EcoTravel Cottages/The Hangout in Bukit Lawang to check on last-minute availability! Just come to our office 1 to 2 days in advance, especially in the low season we usually have places available on our tours.

From Medan to Bukit Lawang? What’s the latest we should arrive in the jungle on the day before our trek will start? What is your Sumatra travel advice?

We really recommend arriving in Bukit Lawang no later than 18:00 pm! Between 16:00 pm and 19:00 pm there will be a meeting with your guide team in our EcoTravel Cottages where you will receive important information and an introduction to your trek starting the following morning. During our special “Meet & Relax Happy Hour” you will meet other EcoTravel guests and our team will answer all your questions. This social gathering, a nice warm up for the next day, is not to be missed! If direct airport transfer is required please note that your flight should arrive at Medan airport before 15:00 pm.  Just remember that the transfer from Medan Airport to Bukit Lawang takes about 4 hours, so the later you arrive, the later you will arrive in Bukit Lawang. On arrival you will need to walk from the taxi stop to the EcoTravel Cottages for about 20 minutes – and if your jungle trek starts the next day you will need to get up early. If you arrive late you may also have problems with dinner, as most restaurants in Bukit Lawang close at 21:00 pm. However, if there is no other option than arriving late at Kuala Namu Airport in Medan, we would actually advise you to simply arrive a day earlier – and why not stay in an airport hotel before you start your jungle adventure? Our transfer service could arrange a relaxed pick up service from your hotel in Medan the next morning – and you could profit from another half day the jungle of Sumatra. Relax, swim, join an additional half day tour or simply discover this beautiful jungle village on your own. This is our very own Sumatra travel guide for EcoTravel guests – to help you all having an unforgettable time in the Sumatran jungle!

To the north of India it’s all about the scenery. Whether it’s the old hill stations of Shimla and Dharmsala, or the Sikh capital Amritsar, where you’ll find the Golden Temple, the backdrop of towering snow-capped Himalayas is a stunning feature. Further north still, the region of Kashmir has not been without its troubles in recent times, but intrepid travellers are rewarding with some fine walking terrain and the opportunity to relax on a traditional houseboat on Lake Dal, Srinagar.

The remote region of Ladakh in the greater Himalaya is a stunning high altitude desert with extraordinary Himalayan mountain landscape and home to one of the greatest rivers in the world, the Indus.

Kashmir & The Himalayas

Rajasthan & The North

The classic place to start is Rajasthan and the north , where you’ll find the country’s most famous sites, such as Agra’s Taj Mahal and the Lake City of Udaipur. This is the land of the Moghuls, where forts such as Delhi’s Red Fort, Jaipur’s Amber Fort and Jodhpur’s Mehrangarh Fort tower majestically over their cities.

Rajasthan offers all of the colours under the rainbow, from the blue city of Jodhpur to the pink city of Jaipur, and from the riotous celebrations of Holi to the extravagant saris of locals in the Thar Desert. Delhi , the country’s capital, divides opinion between love and hate, but we are definitely in the former camp, with a walking tour through the backstreets and past the small workshops of Old Delhi offering an excellent introduction to India.

The state of Gujarat is rightly famed for its textile weaving, but also its diverse landscapes comprising salt flats, coastlines and the hills of Satpura. Its former capital Ahmedabad was declared the first UNESCO World Heritage City in India, to be followed more recently by Jaipur. In Ranthambore National Park meanwhile, you can benefit from one of the natural world’s recent success stories, with the increasing number of bengal tigers meaning excellent chances of viewing these wonderful big cats.

Rajasthan & The North

Central India

Central India is the home of the tiger. The thrill of seeing one in the wild is one of nature’s most rewarding experiences, and two of the best places to do this are in Satpura and Tadoba National Parks, which both have healthy tiger populations and excellent viewing opportunities. There is also Pench, Panna, Bandhavgarh and Kanha National Parks. Gwalior meanwhile has one of the country’s most famous forts, towering over the city. Architecture is also well represented in the temples of Khajuraho and Orchha.

The city of Hampi, or Vijayanagar, once the most populated city in the world, rewards those who venture off the beaten path. Its vast and eerie collection of deserted temples, whilst city lovers can discover the home of the biryani in Hyderabad, or tour Bollywood in Mumbai. Finally, the Ajanta and Ellora caves are often overlooked by visitors, which is a mystery to us but great news for visitors. This is the region to visit if you want to cover some of India’s secrets whilst still seeing sights that will stay with you forever.

Central India

Kolkata & The Northeast

To the east of India you will find probably the country’s most vibrant city, and the country’s intellectual capital, Kolkata . The grand colonial architecture is epitomised by the Victoria Memorial, whilst other highlights include the colourful flower market and the city’s famed street food.

In the east of India is Varanasi, one of Hindu’s holiest places, on the banks of the Ganges river, and a true assault on the senses. To the north east it gets cooler and more tranquil again, with the hill station of Darjeeling, which has become synonymous with tea and its wonderful toy train. Even further north we offer tours to Assam and Nagaland, two of the country’s most ethnically diverse regions.

Kolkata & The Northeast

Kerala & The South

The south of India couldn’t be more different from the north. Whereas the north reigns in glorious chaos, the south offers a slower pace of life, whether that’s cruising along the  Kerala backwaters , staying in a tea plantation in the Munnar hills or enjoying the tropical beaches of the Keralan coast. The south is not short of culture either, and Tamil Nadu is known as the temple state for good reason. Visit the impressively large Meenakshi Temple in Madurai, the Breehadisawara Temple in Thanjavur and Mahabalipuram’s Shore Temples, as well as its impressive bas reliefs, to get an idea of the depth of history here, as well as the amazing artisanship.

Just off the South East mainland of India are the Andaman Islands, with Havelock Island having one of the loveliest beaches in the world and offering great diving. In the south you will also get to try a cuisine consisting of plenty of fresh fish, coconut flavours and enough heat for any chilli lover.

There are arrangements for morning and afternoon jeep safaris to the Pench National park while meals and overnight stay are arranged at the resort. A total of 758 Sq. km of this Southern Indian tropical moist deciduous forest has its extent mingling with the tropical dry deciduous teak. The area is crisscrossed by a number of streams and ‘nallahs’ most of which are seasonal.

Though the Pench River dries up in April end, a number of water pools locally known as ‘dohs’ are found which serve as watering holes for the wild animals. The Pench Reservoir at the center of the park is the only major water source during the pinch period. The best place to view tigers are the watering holes as prey concentration is high along the Pench River. Tigers usually hunt for their prey here. Leopards generally operate in the peripheral areas but are occasionally seen in the deep forest also.
