Kish Island

Kish Island , often referred to as the Pearl of  the Persian Gulf , is one of Iran’s beautiful islands and a touristic resort located on the north east of the  Persian Gulf  ( Khalij-e Fars ) about 17 km (10.2 miles) from the southern offshore of the mainland Iran. With an area of 90 square km (36 sq. miles), Kish is known for being a beautiful resort in the Middle East. Kish Island has relaxed laws in comparison to the rest of Iran. Like almost all parts of Iran, inhabitants of Kish are friendly and hospitable.

Introduction to Kish Island 

Kish Island is situated in the Persian Gulf, 19 kilometers off the southern coast of mainland Iran, belonging to Hormozgan Province. Covering approximately 91 square kilometers, the island boasts a diverse landscape. Kish has a very hot climate due to geographical and regional conditions. In fact, summers on this island are very long and sometimes reach up to 90% humidity. In Kish you will rarely see rain except in winter and in the form of rainstorms. Therefore, it can be said that the best month to travel and stay in Kish is between January and May, where you can escape the cold in other parts of the country and seek refuge in the cool air of Kish. Interesting thing about Kish climate is that the oxygen on the island is pure that even pulmonary patients do not need to use oxygen capsules and this feature is only available in five locations around the world. The average annual temperature of this beautiful island is about 24 degrees Celsius. Most of the island’s vegetation is composed of palm trees, although native to the trees are Persian Kahur , Eucalyptus , Acacia and Albizia lebbeck . Most of the vegetation and trees in this area are resistant against heat and dehydration. Undergoing substantial development in recent decades, Kish has evolved into a major tourist destination. Kish Island was selected as the first free economic zone in Iran in 1982 and is now one of the most active free zones of the country. One of the goals of Kish Island is the development of tourism and commerce in the region; in addition to its historical attractions, the island has been equipped with numerous hotels and entertainment centers.

History of Kish Island

It is said that since the Achaemenid Era, the island has been under Iranian control. With the spread of Islam in the region, the Umayyad Arab caliphs dominated the island of Kish until 863 AD. The Persians took control of the whole Persian gulf region under Buyid dynasty, and this continued until the Timurid Mongols. The golden age of Kish Island was the time of the Seljuks , when it became the largest trading center of the Persian Gulf. But a bit later, a tribe called “ Qiasareh ” came to power in Kish – Originally poor people who lived on piracy but they shortly managed to fortify economic foundations of their government. These rulers were descendants of a person called “ Qays ” – A reason why the island is now called “Kish”. With the assassination of “ King Sultan ” – the last ruler of Qiasareh – their reign on the island was terminated.

In 1506 AD, Kish was occupied by the Portuguese, but at the end of 1621 during the Safavid Empire Era , Imam Quli Khan , seized all the islands of the Persian Gulf along with Bahrain. Then Kish was recognized as one of the Iranian islands again.

Imam-Quli Khan , the son of the renowned Georgian general Allahverdi Khan in the service of Iran’s Safavid dynasty. He played a significant role during the early 17th century. Imam-Quli Khan was initially appointed as the governor of Lar in Fars and 1613, he succeeded his father as the governor-general of whole Fars region.

Attractions of Kish Island

The following are some of the most important attractions on Kish Island.

Harira (Harireh) 

The city of  Harira  or  Harireh , located on the north of the island, dates from the 16th century. Remaining ruins of this city served as an important commercial center during the financial boom of the island. Total area of this ancient city is 120 hectares consisting of ruins of wealthy houses, Jame Mosque, and the public Bath house which can be visited at central parts of the old city. At the northern end of the ruins, near a long rocky shore, one can spot remains of walls, deep wells, and water channels, attracting keen visitors of the site.

The  Kariz or the Persian Qanat of Kish, dating back to more than 2,500 years ago, is actually an underground water canal, known as a historical attraction of the island. This qanat is about 16 meters deep underground and its roof is covered with clams and corals to protect against heat. In 1994 a traditional market was established in the site with the aim of presenting traditional Iranian art and handicrafts from different provinces of Iran.

Greek ship of Kish

The Greek ship , one of the tourist attractions of Kish Island, was stranded near the village of Baghou in August 1966. This ship was built by William Hamilton in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1943. The length of the Greek ship is 136 meters and weighs 7061 metric tons. The cause of the ship’s sinking is still unclear.

Coral Beach

The Coral Beach Park ( Sahel-e Marjan ), located near the Coral Market (Bazar-e Marjan) , is considered one of the most beautiful sights in Kish and links the coral market to the sea. Kish’s coral reef has many beautiful corals, colorful mussels, snails and marine rocks.

Dolphins Park

Dolphin Park is about 100 Hectares southeast of Kish Island. The complex includes a green area with a variety of plant species, bird garden and the first Dolphinarium in Iran. The dolphinarium is home to a variety of marine mammals, including dolphins, northern and southern sea lions, northern sea cats, penguins and more.

Local people in Kish

The island’s permanent population is about 5,000, called Kishvands. The majority of the island’s inhabitants are natives who live in their own neighborhoods in the old town. Most Indigenous people live on fishing, sailing and animal farming, and in the recent past Pearl fishing has flourished among them.

The Ocean water theme park

Iran’s most exclusive outdoor water park, was inaugurated in Kish Island on the occasion of Iran republic anniversary. How to get to Kish Island 

The easiest way to get to Kish is by plane. Nearly every airport in the country has multiple flights to Kish daily, particularly in high seasons.  From Tehran you can reach Kish in less than 2 hours. But if you plan to go to Kish by land, it will be a little different. First you have to take a train, bus or car to one of the ports of Bandar Abbas, Bandar Genaveh or Port Khark. Now, if your car is not with you, you can get on ships that are constantly traveling to Kish, but if you want to take your own car to the island, it’s You have to use a ferry. If you enter Kish by car you need to know some of the rules. First of all you need to bring all valid identification documents with you.  You can only stay 7 days in Kish, motorbikes are not allowed and no driver honks horns.

Kish Island is one of the most beautiful and major tourist destinations in Iran, but it has not always been the case! In fact, by year 1970, Kish Island was just a remote island in the south of the country with no particular importance. In 1970, a delegation of Iranian and American experts visited the island at the behest of Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi and had discussions about expanding it into a tourist destination. The beauties of the island, still untouched by that time, provided great potential to transform it into a tourist destination. According to this procedure, construction and beautification began there until finally, in year 1977, the Kish airport was officially opened. Scuba Diving in Kish 

Scuba diving is one of the most enjoyable and exciting adventures for people. Diving in Kish is possible for everyone and all facilities are considered for the safety of the diver in the blue waters of the Persian Gulf. For diving experience, it is better to use licences clubs that offer standard diving facilities and equipment along with authorized instructor who teaches and helps you. The diving clubs of Kish Island are located in Simorgh beach, Marjan beach, Damoon beach and in Kish marine recreation center .

In your first diving experience, you will not go deeper than 4 meters, and all the equipment and a diving instructor are available by your side. It is necessary to know that in diving, you do not need to know swimming skills and you can see fishes and underwater creatures by the help of the instructors.

For Scuba diving in the waters of the Persian Gulf, you must pay attention to several points:

Diving is free for men and women. Training is conducted by male and female instructors. Divers must move in the direction recommended by the instructors. Divers should not damage the ecosystem and avoid touching corals and aquatic animals.

There is a ban on diving in Kish for 3 groups – Children under 10 years old – pregnant women = People with special diseases such as: heart and lung problems, diabetes, asthma and epilepsy

Get in [ edit ]

Foreign nationals do not need a visa at the authorized arrival and departure points in Kish Island. At Kish International Airport, the officials will take your photograph and fingerprints, and stamp your passport, allowing you to stay up to 14 days on the island. If you are western, you may be sternly questioned as to the purpose of your visit. Make sure you bring all verification paperwork including hotel reservations with phone numbers, etc.

Upon arrival at Kish Airport, all female passengers will be immediately escorted to a room and very politely ordered to wear headscarves and long robes to cover their entire body. The clothing is available at the airport, and passengers are expected to return them when leaving Kish. Female visitors may be detained for a period of time under the perception that they 'might have difficulty finding their way around the island'. However, the staff in general are very polite, but speak little English.

Women who do not have appropriate Muslim dress (head scarves, long smocks or dresses) will be provided with them upon arrival prior to passing through customs and immigration. These are loaned free of charge, and should be returned upon leaving.

By car [ edit ]

Driving by car is easy. There is only one route to Kish Island. If you are driving from Tehran , take care on the road and be alert of the highways and the pedestrians.

By bus [ edit ]

There are private buses that will take you from Tehran and other main cities to Kish Island. This is probably the safest way of travelling in Iran . Private buses in Iran are inexpensive compared to other countries in the Middle East.

By boat [ edit ]

There are boats that will take you from the port cities of Bandar-e Abbas, Bushehr and Chahbahar. As of June 2009 this has reportedly been suspended.

Get around [ edit ]

If you are energetic, walking is your best option. However, like the rest of Iran, there are plenty of taxis but without meters. It is advisable to agree the fare in advance, and to make sure that the driver understands where you want to go. The majority of taxis on the island are Toyota Camrys and are fully air-conditioned. The normal fares are usually US$2-5 depending upon the distance, which is never too long as the island is rather small.

Be careful to check your change as some taxi drivers will take advantage of tourists and attempt to short-change.

Snorkeling on the beaches of Kish Island is said to be amongst the best in the world, while the scuba-diving offers an even more spectacular insight of life beneath the waters. A variety of other water sports are also available: jet-skiing, sailing, fishing, parasailing, reef walking, coral viewing, boating and water-skiing are some of the popular ways to enjoy yourself when visiting the Island. A variety of other water sports are also available. The Kish coastline is one of the least dangerous coasts in the world. Kish has gorgeous white sandy beaches for relaxing walks.

Women-only beaches are available for the female tourists to the Island. Women do not have access to most beaches, or to the prime snorkeling areas. There used to be an "international beach" where male and female foreign tourists could swim together, but it has been closed by the government.

Contrary to the above information regarding the Greek Ship , there is no restaurant on board what remains of the historic ship. Still, this is a beautiful island - and you could bring food with you and enjoy the site while sitting at a shaded table nearby.

Kish is a trade free zone, making it a good place for shopping and trading. The price of goods in Kish are notably cheaper than in mainland Iran. Many Iranians and tourists visit Kish to purchase duty free clothes, electronic goods, cosmetics, etc. There are a number of large shopping centres, most of them situated in the eastern part of the island. Due to the daytime heat, most shops are closed from 13:00 until around 17:30. Some stay open until late into the night. The shopping malls in Kish cater to every taste. However, be prepared to find numerous fake American and European brands such as Gucci, Prada, Diesel, The Gap and Starbucks. One exception is the 'Ikea' store, which imports genuine Ikea merchandise.

It is not difficult to find work on the Island. If you are sociable and hospitable, working in cafes and restaurants is fairly easy. If you are looking for work in the commercial and tourist sector, you must have at least some experience and knowledge of the Iranian economy and of Kish Island.

Most people on Kish Island work from 09:00 to 17:00, including the government employees. On Thursdays, government employees work from 09:00 to 13:00.

Alcoholic beverages are not served on the island. The tea is light, good in taste and is kept at every home, shop and other social places.

' Cafe Aquarium' ( ground floor of Pardis II Shopping Mall. ) This popular hangout serves "Starbucks" coffee, Italian style sandwiches, banana splits, and fresh fruit juice to a young, hip crowd.

Accommodation in Kish is slightly more expensive than mainland Iran, however it is not extortionate. Kish Island has a range of nice villas, hotels and guest houses for tourists. Hotel reservations must be made through a travel agency in Tehran, which may be difficult if you are not Iranian and/or do not speak Persian.

Even on the most luxurious island of Iran, you can enjoy a visit to a cultural heritage dating back more than two millennia. Kish Island has been inhabited by Iranians since the Achaemenid Empire and it is as rich in history as it is in beauty. Kariz-e Kish is a remaining of an ancient Qanat (aqueduct) that has turned into an underground city and museum for people to visit. Iranians designed the Qanat system as an adaptation to arid climate five to six thousand years ago before the Roman Aqueducts. It is a hydraulic water system consisting of multiple vertical wells along a gentle slope that filters and guides water toward the arid areas. Kariz-e Kish or Kish Qanat was built 2500 years ago to supply drinking water for island inhabitants. It’s a massive series of tunnels (10,000 square meters) snaking in a sixteen meters depth in coral earth of the island. To have a good functioning Qanat it must start from a high elevation going down gradually to the valleys. But Kish Island does not have high elevation areas and still, its Qanat is one of the best functioning in Iran. Another factor that gives Kariz a unique characteristic is being in a coral ground. The coral reef purifies water very well plus when you walk in this cool ancient underground city, the walls and ceiling are covered with 500-600 million-year-old fossils of turtle, shells, and other species of the sea. Kish Island is one of the most favorite tourist destinations among Iranians and specifically younger generations. Beautiful shopping malls, restaurants, water activities, and beaches create a great package for a relaxing and romantic getaway. One reason for this high fame is because the island is warm and nice during winter. When other parts of Iran are cold and covered with snow you can put your toes in the warm white sands on the beach and jet ski on the turquoise water of the Persian Gulf.

The best time for Kish is from January to April. Kish climate is hot and humid with an average of 26°C in a year. In summer it can get as hot as 40°C (104°F). Kish is a free trade zone where fifteen percent of all imports to Iran are through this region plus it has many investment incentives. You can take a short fly or a cruise from all the countries bordering the Persian Gulf to the Island. Tourists do not need a visa for entrance regardless of their nationality.

The best time to travel to Kish is from January to April.

#1 Kish Island Visa

Kish Island Visa : Being a Free Zone, like Qeshm Island, all nationalities (except Israeli)  do NOT need a visa to enter and stay in Kish Island only, for a period of 14 days .

So, US citizens can travel to Kish Island without obtaining any visa.

However, if intending to enter mainland Iran afterwards, 180 nationalities have the option of Visa-on-Arrival at International Airport of Kish, to obtain their visa. Or, recommended to save time, they can apply for Iran Visa online via the website of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran prior to their entry in Iran.

Note : UK, American and Canadian passport holders are not eligible for Visa-on-Arrival and need to apply in advance to enter mainland Iran. Moreover, they need to be accompanied by a tour guide during their stay in Kish Island or mainland Iran.

Kish Island Location : Kish Island belongs to Hormozgan Province and is located 19 km off the coast in the Persian Gulf , to the west of Qeshm Island. Egg-shaped, the surface area of the island is 91.5 km 2 (about 6% of Qeshm Island). The island surface is flat, lacking mountains or hills.

The greek ship wreckage.

On the southwest coast of Kish runs aground a Greek ship wreckage, creating a mesmerizing view of sunset behind it. Originally built by a British company in 1943, the 7,061-ton cargo steamship was called Empire Trumpet. The ship had different owners through time, and the last one was the Greek. Returning home in 1966 , the ship ran aground for still-unknown reasons, and after failed attempts to free the ship, it was set on fire and estranged.

Ancient City of Harireh

On the northern coast of the island, lie the remnants of an 8 th century city of 120 hectares. The remains of an aristocratic house, bathhouse, etc. make this archaeological site worth a visit.

Kish Native Anthropological House

On the norther coast, in one of the oldest neighborhoods of Kish, Saffain, exists a 200-year-old house turned anthropology museum. The house is a perfect example of the vernacular architecture of Kish Island, showcasing the local handicrafts and life-style of the natives of this island. The original owner of the house was an affluent pearl merchant.

Kariz Underground City

Originally an ancient water supply system , by constructing underground aquaducts (Kariz or Qanat ), Kariz of Kish was a vital facility, to supply and filter water, to the dwellers of this arid island. 15 km of underground tunnels form a network of 15 at the depth 14 m, covering an area of 10,000 m 2 .

Although long-left obsolete, this underground masterpiece was revived, and recreational facilities were added to the area attracting massive numbers of tourists to both enjoy the rich antiquity of this structure and have a pleasant time.

Kish Island Water Reservoir (Ab Anbar)

The twin water reservoir with 5 wind-catchers is built on a former ancient cistern in the vicinity of the ancient city of Harireh.

How would one get from Kish to Qeshm and other islands of the Gulf? Are there ferries? Cause without a visa I could not pass through the mainland to Qeshm, right?

The coast is lined with pergolas, which, along with the palm trees and landscaping, provide an especially panoramic view. This beach is a particularly popular site to watch an unforgettable sunrise. 3. Kariz Underground City

Water being a scarce resource in many parts of Iran, ancient Iranians came up with the qanat system — gently sloping vertical wells that lead water into arid areas. Kariz is one such 2,500-year-old qanat, and visitors can take a walk through its tunnels and get an up-close view of this kind of system. The tunnels extend more than five miles, making Kariz look more like an underground city. This ancient structure has been preserved but modernized with the addition of handicraft stalls and a traditional teahouse.

4. Harireh Ancient City

It is said that this 8th century city is the same one that renowned Persian poet Sa’adi mentioned in his work, Golestan. Located in the central, northern part of the island, Harireh offers a glimpse of ancient architecture, and though not much of it remains intact today, the ruins suggest a once thriving region. Excavation of this site estimates it having been established around 1000 and abandoned 600 years later.

5. The Twin Water Reservoir

The Twin Water Reservoir was built in 1993 upon remnants of an existing water reservoir, and the architecture is highly reminiscent of the water reservoirs of Yazd. In places with a scarcity of water, such structures were build to store water. The badgir (windcatchers), an ancient Persian architectural structure used to create natural ventilation, help to keep the water at near freezing temperatures.

Kish Sea Turtles

On the southern and western coasts of this coral island between the months of March and August, hawksbill turtles come out onto preserved lands to lay their eggs. These beaches give tourists the opportunity to view these giant turtles swimming against the waves back into the sea. Grab your camera and set out to these tucked-away beaches to spot heads popping out of the water and photograph the turtles digging out holes to nest their eggs (from a safe distance, of course).

6. Green Tree Complex

The north of the island, a particularly green area known as the Portuguese Valley, is the location of the Green Tree Complex, which was build around one of the oldest lur (banyan) trees. Said to be around 600 years old, many believe this tree is auspicious and come here to make a wish and tie a thread around the thick twisted branches to make it come true, a necessary act for finding your soulmate! The rest of the complex provides a wonderful green space in which to relax with a glass of hot Persian tea or perhaps a cold ice cream.

Kish is a 91.5-square-kilometre (35.3 sq mi) resort island in the Persian Gulf off the southern coast of Iran. It is part of the Bandar Lengeh County in Hormozgan Province of Iran. Owing to its free trade zone status it is touted as a consumer's paradise, with numerous malls, shopping centres, tourist attractions, and resort hotels. It has an estimated population of 26,000 residents and about 1 million people visit the island annually.

Based on Wikipedia , Kish Island is the third most visited vacation destination in Southwest Asia after Dubai and Sharm el-Sheikh. Foreign nationals wishing to enter Kish Free Zone from legal ports are not required to obtain visas prior to travel. Valid travel permits are stamped for 14 days by airport and Kish port police officials.

At present, there are a number of daily domestic and international airlines flying to Kish International Airport (KIH).

Driving by car is easy. There is only one route to Bandar Abbas. Then you can go to the Kish Island by boat.

Kish has a hot, dry climate, with temperatures peaking Jun–Sep. Kish is considered to have a desert climate. There is virtually no rainfall during the year. In Kish, the average annual temperature is 27.2 °C. About 136 mm of precipitation falls annually. In Kish, the summers are long, sweltering, oppressive, and arid, the winters are comfortable and dry and it is mostly clear year round. The variation in the precipitation between the driest and wettest months is 44 mm. During the year, the average temperatures vary by 16.0 °C.

Kish is a 91.5 square kilometer (35.3 sq. mi) resort island and it is considered as one of the Persian Gulf islands and tourist sites of Hormozgan Province that is located 18 km (12 mi) from mainland Iran’s south shore with the altitude of 30 meters above the sea level in the north range of the Persian Gulf.

Kish enjoys a warm and humid climate but has low rainfall in general. Due to its free trade zone status it is touted as a consumer's paradise with numerous malls, shopping centers, tourist attractions, and resort hotels.

About 1.5 million people visit the island annually. Kish Island was ranked among the world’s 10 most beautiful islands by The New York Times in 2010, and is the fourth most visited vacation destination in Southwest Asia.

Foreign nationals wishing to enter Kish Free Zone are not required to obtain visas prior to travel. Valid travel permits are stamped for 14 days. Therefore, the island enjoys a privileged position in terms of tourism business by special and unique benefits of Kish Free Zone. Free access to the waterways of the world, foreign nationals entry without the visa, strategic location and proximity to oil-rich regions of Assaluyeh , having energy source (gas) independent from the mainland, having an independent airline and shipping lines with the possibility of car carriers, high levels of security and social peace and low level in social ills, convenient transportation facilities within the city, proportional control of environmental pollutants, access and proximity to international ports and cities of the region such as Dubai, Sharjah, Manama and Doha, favorable weather in the 8 months of the year and having the coral beaches are only a few of the island’s benefit.

Engineers have strengthened the tunnels with cement and stone, in addition to the traditional coral walls surrounding the qanat, to create a subterranean realm.

The Ancient Town of Harireh.  Ruins of stone buildings in an area 3 by 1 kilometre. The structures were built of sandstone, with some plaster on the walls. Some were originally a number of storeys in height. Harireh town is estimated to be 800 years old, and is thought to have been destroyed by a powerful earthquake. Archeologists speculate that Harireh’s building dates back to sometime between the late Sassanid and early Islamic periods. They don’t claim to know the date for certain, but what they do know is that Harireh used to be a very popular and famous city during the Seljuks and Atavakan of Fars.

Old Seffin village   The historic town of old Seffin, located in the northern portion of Kish Island, is the oldest village that has survived from the days of old Kish, and it features distinctive traditional local construction. The Island’s indigenous people are currently residing in the settlement.Until 40 years ago, pearl fishing was the primary source of income for the island’s indigenous population, particularly the old Seffin residents. After its stop in Kish in 1966, it was to leave toward Greece, but every effort to pull it out was in vain. So, it was abandoned. Now, together with the sea, it has created a nice backdrop for enjoyable walks, horse rides, and bicycle rides.

Green Tree Complex

Built around an old banyan tree, the Green Tree Complex of Kish Island is the place for a pleasant walk. A native of India and China, these unique-looking banyan trees were introduced to the Persian Gulf a few hundred years ago. This 600-year-old tree is in the northern part of the island. Afghan activist who was 'erased' by Taliban reveals how women are 'suffering' in Iran

An Afghan women's rights activist reveals to Sky News the stark differences - and what is not so different - in how the Iranian and Afghan regimes treat women.

A young women's rights activist from Afghanistan recently left the country and travelled to Iran.

Women in both countries have few rights - but the activist told Sky News that when she arrived she saw a massive difference between the two places.

That was until Iranian women revealed how they suffered under the Islamic Republic's regime.

We are keeping the activist anonymous to protect her safety. This is her story:

Almost three years of living in Afghanistan under the Taliban regime has systemically erased me and my fellow Afghan women from public life.

During this time, I struggled with deep depression and mental health crises, like countless women in the country.

There was no hope my situation would improve so my brother urged me to go travelling with him.

For most of people in Afghanistan, there are two countries we can travel to - Pakistan and Iran .

But because I'm a women's rights activist and there has been a women's revolution in Iran after the death of Mahsa Amini , I chose to go to Iran.

In the first days of our arrival, I could see women everywhere - in the streets, schools, universities, parks, restaurants - free to wear and do what they want at any time.

One day, I went to a beauty salon in the Mashhad area of Iran.

When I entered, there was a woman who just entered the salon before me. She was crying and all the women in the salon were welcoming her with tears and open hugs.

Waiting for my turn, I got more information about Sapideh. She was a well-known client of the salon for years.

She had lost her father recently - her only parent - and had been at home overcoming her grief and loss. It sounded like she didn't have any other family or friends to support her in this difficult time.

The ladies in the beauty salon listened to her words and cries and everyone did their best to comfort her.

When I was leaving, I could see that three women were working on her face, hair, and nails. She had stopped crying.

In Afghanistan, beauty salons - the small spaces that allow women to help and support each other - are all closed.

On my way to the hotel, I saw women driving, or women without hijab who were free - and my mind could only think of Afghan women.

Because we are used to it, we don't know that our rights and our freedoms have been stolen from us.

During those first days, I was constantly comparing our situation with Iranian women - I couldn't find any similarity between our struggles, even though both countries can be described as having gender apartheid regimes.

In Afghanistan, women are fighting for basic human rights that we are denied, but Iranian women already appear to have them all.

Iranian women are suffering but I wasn't able to see that as I am one of the millions of Afghan women who are subject to suffering, oppression, and pain.

Meeting Tranom, a young Iranian teenager, in the bathroom of a shopping mall, changed my mind.

Tranom, who was 16, had short purple hair, no hijab, and was wearing a T-shirt and jeans. She told me that when she had a proper hijab, she had been arrested three times.

"It was too bad for a woman to be arrested in my society but now I'm not scared anymore. I wear what I want," she said.

When I was in Tehran, I met Zari, a construction engineering student.

We discussed my first impressions of Iran. Zari said that the regime is mostly targeting the young generation of Iranians.

Areas that have more young people also have more trouble and tensions.

"You might have not seen the vans of Gasht-a Ershad, the Iranian morality police, in other areas but you can see one of them in [the] neighbourhood where the university is located and the parks where female and male students go," said Zari.

Young Iranian women, especially students, are oppressed every day under the pretext that their hijab is not worn correctly, I learned from Zari.

When I travelled with my brother to Kish Island, in southern Iran, I met Fatima, a teacher who was there with her daughter and husband.

She spoke about a deep mental health crisis and depression among Iranian women.

While we were sitting on the beach of the Persian Gulf, she asked me to watch each woman who was passing in front of us.

She told me that Kish Island is one of the most expensive places in the country - many Iranians dream of visiting. The people here are the wealthy of Iran, she says.

"When you are looking at women, you see they wear expensive clothes and they have plastic surgery and sometimes heavy make-up," said Fatima.

"But none of them are happy because they have been oppressed by the regime. Because they are not free."

"The fear from the morality police [is that they] never leave them alone. They all are aware of countless young women who have been arrested under the hijab pretext, and they have been raped, tortured, killed and disappeared. We all are alive but we are not living."

Gender apartheid must be codified as a crime against humanity - let all Afghan and Iranian women live free.

There is so much that is revealing about this young Afghan woman's observations and comparisons with life for women in Iran.

And so much that is tragically sad too.

After more than two years of oppressive restrictions, she's almost inured to them.

She's horribly aware she's lost a lot but like an old photograph, the memories of those "freedoms" are fading.

She almost casually mentions how her brother accompanies her to Iran for a "holiday" - a trip possible after obtaining a Taliban permit allowing her to go but only if she is escorted by her mahram or blood relative who acts as her chaperone (in this case, her brother).

Even beyond the country's borders, the long arm of the Afghan Taliban stretches and curtails.

How restrictive this is for women with no male relatives or who are living with those who wield dominant control.

She observes how women in a regime considered one of the most restrictive in the world appear almost blessed compared to Afghan women.

Those in Iran have the one "freedom" cruelly denied to her and her fellow Afghan women: being able to learn.

In Afghanistan today, women cannot freely work, walk, or wear what and wherever they want.

She visits a beauty salon in Iran and is delighted to see women supporting others.

They were once female-only safe havens for Afghan women - where women sought support, comfort and exchanged ideas.

But this too was deemed unacceptable in Afghanistan under the Taliban.

They figured the salons may have been where women plotted their protest marches.

Now women spend days, weeks and months locked away in their homes, too scared, too intimidated or simply unable to leave without breaking the Taliban code.

Access to parks is restricted to certain days, the sexes segregated entirely but also the ability to talk and mix with other women has been inevitably curtailed.

The vast bulk of female journalists have had to stop work since the Taliban seized power in 2021.

Some fled the country and are in exile. Others fled underground - and write secretly and anonymously - like our contributor.

There is no World Press Freedom Day for female Afghan journalists and without media freedom, there is no freedom for Afghanistan.
