The Complete Guide to Visiting Krka National Park Waterfalls, Croatia

Zi @Craving Adventure

  • April 12, 2023
  • Croatia , Europe

Krka National Park is named after the Krka River that flows through it and is the backbone of the park. Considering the area’s scarcity of water, this lush green park filled with magical cascades and waterfalls is truly a wonder.

I visited Krka Waterfalls several times but it wasn’t until my last visit that I ventured off the beaten path and explored the lesser-known and less accessible parts of the park. While Skradinski Buk (the most popular touristic attraction) is absolutely stunning, there is so much more to this park and you could easily spend several days exploring, hiking and cycling around.

So keep reading, in this guide to visiting Krka National Park you’ll get all the info you need for a memorable experience in the park. I’ll cover everything you need to know from points of interest, things to do, where to sleep and eat, and even tour recommendations!

Where is Krka National Park?

Located in the Croatian Karst, Krka National park features numerous underground caves. The fundamental building block of the Krka Waterfalls is travertine, a type of limestone that precipitated from water and created the park’s seven stunning waterfalls. The process of travertine formation is ongoing, and the river flow is everchanging.

The park’s history is just as fascinating as its natural beauty. Did you know that the oldest power plant in Skradinski Buk became operational just two days after Tesla’s hydroelectric plant at Niagara Falls? This power plant was the first complete electrical energy system in Croatia, lighting up Šibenik which received electrical energy much earlier than many European cities!

Krka National Park Waterfalls

Krka National Park is nestled in the heart of central Dalmatia, Croatia, just a few kilometers northeast of Sibenik. The park covers an area of 109 km2 along the Krka River and the lower course of the Cikola River.

However, when most people think of Krka National Park, they’re referring to the Skradinski Buk waterfalls at the Southern tip of the National Park, next to Skradin and Lozovac towns.

Covering an area of 109 km2, Krka National Park features 47 km of educational walking trails, 470 kilometers of cycling routes, 7 waterfalls, and 6 fortresses. It spans 4 municipalities and there are 4 cities within the park, as well as several public roads going through the park.

What I’m trying to say is – as soon as you venture out of Skradinski Buk, you’ll need this Krka National Park map to navigate this maze!

Officially there are 10 entrances to the park, meaning there are 10 roads leading into the park. However, most of these roads are public and there are open 24/7.

You will only need a ticket to visit Skradinski Buk (Lozovac or Skradin entrance), Roški Slap, Visovac Island, and Krka Monastery. It’s best to book your ticket in advance, especially during high season in summer.

Working hours and prices differ depending on the season.

There are no hotels located in Krka National Park itself, but there are some accommodation options for you to choose from on its outskirts. Accommodation options in Skradin and Lozovac towns are closest to the park entrances.

However, I’d recommend staying in Sibenik which is just a short drive away and a great option if you’d like to explore this medieval town as well. Check out this article to find out about the best areas and lodging in Sibenik.

There are daily tours to Krka National Park from Sibenik, Zadar, Split and Trogir. You can pick where you want to visit from depending on your Croatia itinerary but keep in mind that Sibenik is the closest while Split is the furthest from Krka Falls.

I would highly recommend you do a guided tour of the park with an experienced guide who will explain the history and natural sights, as well as take you to the best viewpoints.

13 incredible things to do and see in Krka National Park

Skradinski buk waterfall is the crown jewel of Krka National Park and an absolute must-see. This natural wonder is the longest tufa barrier in Europe and a spectacular sight to behold. Walking on the wooden paths and bridges around the waterfall is like entering a fairy tale, with lush greenery and crystal blue waters cascading around you.

Along the circular, educational walking trail, you’ll see the restored former watermills that demonstrate the old trade, and the remnants of the Krka hydroelectric plant from 1895, which was the first to provide electricity to Sibenik. Educational panels are installed throughout the trail, providing insightful information about the park’s history and natural features.

Six out of the seven waterfalls in the park feature watermills and water columns, which were in use until the late 1970s. Today, several of the watermills at the Skradinski Buk waterfall have been restored and transformed into a museum and visitor center, where you can learn about the area’s rich cultural heritage.

The watermills’ original tools and equipment are on display, and guides dressed in traditional attire offer a glimpse into the life and work of millers from bygone times. There is also a tiny ethno museum, which displays traditional handicrafts and artifacts that provide insight into the region’s rich cultural and historical legacy.

krka falls tour

Roški slap waterfall is comprised of a 22.5-meter-high main waterfall, as well as numerous backwaters, cascades, and tufa islands upstream from it. You can catch a glimpse of the waterfall from the boat pier but a boat excursion is recommended to get closer to the waterfall and see it in full.

On the left bank of Roski Slap, there are several charming watermills, some of which have been restored and returned to their original function, while others have been turned into restaurants.

Three restaurants are still owned by the millers’ families and are the perfect spot for a lunch break. You can grab a table over the water and cool your sore feet.

Just upstream of Roški slap, the Krka River flows through a 450-meter-wide gorge, where it cascades down multiple smaller waterfalls and dense vegetation before ultimately pouring into the stunning Visovac Lake.

This area upstream from the falls is named Ogrlice or Krka’s necklaces. There’s an easy walking path along the river where you can take in the beauty of these small cascades. Along this walk you can take a detour up the 517 wooden steps to Ozidana Cave.

The public area of the cave is tiny and in terms of Karst phenomena it is not that impressive, but you might be lucky and spot some bats. However, the real attraction here is the view! You’ll be able to see the Roski Slap area and the Necklaces from above.

Archaeological research has established that the Ozidana Pecina Cave contains evidence of all Neolithic cultures in the Adriatic area, along with Eneolithic and Early and Middle Bronze Age cultures.

If you’re looking for a peaceful retreat, Visovac Island might be just the place for you. Located in the middle of Visovac Lake this island has been home to the Franciscan Monastery since 1445.

On the island, you can explore the Franciscan monastery’s archaeological collection, as well as their collection of historical church linens and dishes. They also have a rich library filled with many valuable books including a tiny 3.5mm prayer book.

But here’s the thing! While the island gardens are definitely beautiful and tranquil, and the monks are very friendly and kind, it might not be worth the time to get there, at least not for everyone.

There’s actually a better way to experience Visovac Island, and that’s from the viewpoint overlooking the island. From here, you can enjoy a stunning view of the island and its gardens without the hassle of actually going there.

If you do decide to visit the island, there are a few ways to get there – by 2h excursion boat from Skradinski Buk and Roski Slap, or by boat transfer from Stinice or Remetić, which takes just a few minutes. All of these transportation options have set schedules and prices, so be sure to plan accordingly.

Originally built on the site of an earlier Eremite monastery, the Orthodox Krka Monastery is located 3.5 kilometers east of Kistanje, in a bay on the Krka River. You can also explore the ancient Roman catacombs below the Byzantine-style church next to the monastery.

The Krka Monastery can be reached by road from Kistanje or by a 2.5-hour boat excursion from Roški slap. A 2100-meter hiking trail is also available. The monastery is closed to visitors from November to March.

The Manojlovac waterfall is the tallest and often considered the most beautiful of all the Krka waterfalls. With a height of 59.6 meters and the Dinara Mountains with lush greenery as the backdrop, this waterfall really is a breathtaking sight.

Manojlovac is particularly striking in the early spring, but be aware that the waterfall can dry up quite a bit in the summer months. To avoid any potential disappointment, make sure to check with a park ranger or guide about the water flow before making the trip there.

This amazing viewpoint is a hidden gem not even mentioned as a standalone viewpoint on the parks website or any other guides I’ve come across. It is a tiny bit of a walk and drive to get here, but so worth it!

The view from the tip of the Rogovo viewpoint offers a unique perspective of the Medu Gredama canyon and Visovac Lake. The canyon was once home to the Early Croatian fortress Rogovo, and Roški slap waterfall was named after it.

Follow the signposts for the Rogovo viewpoint along the partly paved Rupe-Laškovica road. After a sign prohibiting vehicle traffic, the trail continues as a flat gravel walking trail.

Explore the Krka National Park through its 14 marked bicycle routes spanning a total of 470 km. With 5 mountain bike routes, 3 road routes, and 6 track routes, there’s something for every rider to choose from. All routes are circular routes and well-marked for easy navigation and offer a chance to explore previously inaccessible areas of the park. You can also join a guided bike tour of the park with gear rental included.

Refer to this brochure for detailed maps of the routes.

Explore the stunning Krka National Park through its 22 hiking trails spanning 47 km and 5 lookout points. These educational walking trails and viewpoints will let you discover the wealth of flora and fauna with the help of educational panels containing detailed information about the plant and animal life in the park, as well as its cultural and historical features.

You can find a map and further info on the trails here.

Thanks to its geographic position, water supply and diverse habitats, the park is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna. Krka National Park is home to unique and rare animal species, making it a valuable natural area in Croatia and Europe. There are 12 endemic fish species, amphibians, turtles, lizards, and rare mammals like Bechstein’s bat and wild cat. It’s also a birdwatcher’s paradise with over 229 bird species recorded in the park.

You can explore Krka National Park by water, road, or by walking or biking along the educational trails and bicycle routes. Some park sights are separated by natural barriers and are only accessible by personal vehicles, while others are connected by excursion boats.

If you only want to see the main attractions like Skradinski Buk, Roski Slap and Visovac island, you’ll be able to reach them by taxi boat. However, driving through the park on your own is the optimal way to explore Krka National Park.

Not only are the park’s main waterfalls spaced far apart, but also renting a car gives you the freedom to move at your own pace. The (usually displaced) viewpoints offer spectacular views of Krka, but you need to go for a bit of a drive (or massive hike) to take in the breathtaking natural beauty of the park from different angles.

If renting a car is not an option for you, joining a guided tour is a great alternative. It is one of the most popular ways to explore Krka National Park and is very convenient.

Getting to Krka NP

You can easily reach Krka National Park by car, public transport or by joining an organized tour from any of the main cities in the area. Sibenik is the closest followed by Zadar and Split.

If you travel by public transport you’ll have to catch a bus to Skradin and hop on the taxi boat in at the Skradin entrance to Skradinski Buk.

The drive from Split to Krka National Park takes approximately 1.5 hours by car and offers breathtaking views along the way.

Alternatively, you can opt for the bus service from the Split bus terminal. However, the journey will take longer and you’ll have to abide by the bus schedule.

Krka National Park is one of the most popular day trips from Split and there is no shortage of organized tours for you to choose from. However, this one stood out to me as it is one of the rare few to include the park ticket and lunch.

Driving to Krka National Park from Zadar is a simple journey that takes just over 1 hour.

You can also opt to take a bus from the Zadar bus station to Skadin, but it will take longer due to limited bus services, and you’ll be subject to the bus timetable.

If you prefer to join a guided tour I recommend this one which also includes a boat ride and wine tasting.

Since Sibenik is the closest city to Krka National Park the drive there is super short. If you have a rental car, you can reach either the Lozovac or Skradin entrances in approximately 20 minutes.

Alternatively, there’s a bus route that connects Sibenik to Krka, with frequent buses running between the city and the park’s two main gates.

If you are looking for a guided tour from Sibenik I recommend this boat tour which takes you from Sibenik along the river mouth all the way up to the Skradin entrance. This way you’ll be able to see even more of the canyon and the lovely town of Skradin.

krka falls tour

There are some small and simple restaurants in the park at Skradinski Buk and Roski Slap. The restaurants at Roski Slap are quite fun and you get to sit over the water. However, the menus are limited.

If you’re planning on doing any of the hikes make sure to pack some water and snacks.

If you’ll be driving around from one entrance to the other you’ll be able to have lunch in one of the restaurants outside the park. Konoba Vinko on the road from Lozovac to Drnis is a great option also featured in the Michellin guide and Skradin town is a fabulous choice for dinner. Make sure to try the traditional Skradin risotto and Skradin Cake.

You can swim in designated areas at Roški slap, Stinice, and Pisak between June 1st and September 30th. Swimming outside of these areas and dates is prohibited . You are no longer allowed in the water at Skradinski Buk.

This change came into effect in January 2021, as a measure to safeguard the national park. Some tours might still advertise it and display old photos, but the rules are the same for everyone and you will not be allowed in the water at Skradinski Buk or any of the waterfalls.

Camping is not allowed in Krka National Park, but there are camping sites available at Camping Vrata Krke or you can go glamping at Krka Fairytale Village at the outskirts of the park. Wild camping is not allowed in Croatia.

Are you kidding me? Yes, yes, and hell yes! Krka National Park is absolutely worth a visit and should be part of your itinerary when you’re visiting Sibenik , Zadar , Trogir , Split , or doing a road trip along the Dalmatian coast.

If you don’t fluff around you’ll be able to see the main highlights of Krka Waterfalls in only one day. Skradinski Buk and Roski Slap can be visited in just a few hours if you time the transfers right or drive on your own.

However, if you’d like to do some hiking, cycling, and fully appreciate the beauty of the whole park, you should plan a longer visit and purchase multi-day entrance tickets.

Krka National Park is beautiful any time of the year but Spring is by far the nicest when the water flow is highest, the waterfalls at it’s best and nature blossoming in flowers and baby leaves.

Are There Waterfalls in Split, Croatia?

About the krka national park, skradinski buk waterfall, roški slap waterfall, planning your visit to krka waterfalls from split, how to get to the krka waterfalls from split, krka national park suggested itineraries, swimming in the krka waterfalls, which is better, krka or plitvice, where to stay in split, final thoughts.

Split is the second largest Croatian city and although it has many popular tourist attractions like the historic Diocletian’s Palace and the majestic coastline, it does not have actual waterfalls.

Don’t despair though – you can reach waterfalls at the splendid Krka National Park as it’s just over 50 miles away! So it’s safe to say that Split can be a gateway to exploring the natural world of Croatia very easily. They make the perfect addition to a 7 day Croatia itinerary .

There are also waterfalls further away at the Plitvice Lakes National Park , but it is over 160 miles each way and takes around three hours to get there. Therefore Krka National Park is by far your best option.

There are two main waterfalls in Krka National park: Skradinski Buk and Roški Slap.

The Krka National Park has held national park status since 1985 and is one of the most popular and well known of Croatia’s many natural attractions.

Being barely spoilt by humanity, this large expanse of 109 square kilometres is wild and attractive, boasting the highest density of wild lavender in Europe and sustains a variety of eco-systems.

Nearly 900 different plant species live within the park, as well as over 200 bird species and 18 different types of fish from trout to the Dalmatian Barbel Gudgeon. Ospreys, eagles, owls and falcons hunt naturally in the area, and it is impossible to visit without seeing birds of prey in action.

The national park is also home to some of the most impressive waterfalls in the country.

The Krka National Park levies a daily entry fee which entitles you to both enter and move around this natural wonder at your own pace.

Fact!  Krka National Park is home to not one but  two  stunning waterfalls, and the best news is that the park is only 1 hour away from Split.

View of Krka National Park, Croatia

Within the Krka National Park in the Dalmatia region of Croatia are many incredible waterfalls, but perhaps the most well-known is Skradinski Buk.

The main reason for this is the sheer size of the waterfall. The Krka and Čikola rivers combine and merge here, cascading down over 17 steps in a waterfall that is almost a kilometre in length!

The size of the steps vary so that the cascade steps are anything between 200 and 400 meters, while the total height difference is measured at an impressive 46 meters.

It’s the sheer scale of this waterfall that gives Skradinski Buk its eternal appeal, making it one of the most popular natural wonders in the whole of the Balkans.

Skradinski Buk Waterfall Quick Facts

Location:  Krka National Park

  • Distance from Split:  A 1 hour drive
  • Closest Park Entrance:  Skradin town
  • Accessibility:  Easy. A boat from Skradin will drop you within a few minute’s walk from the falls

A tour is a fantastic way to visit Skradinski Buk Waterfall. There are a number of tours available which start in Split. You can view a list of highly-rated tours to Skradinski Buk here .

Ella McKendrick at Krka National Park in Croatia by Waterfalls

Also within the Krka National Park, but set some 30 kilometres away from Skradinski Buk, is the equally charming Roški Slap waterfall. It is located a little more remotely but is still very accessible and is geared for tourists wishing to experience different waterfalls.

Roški Slap is formed from a series of cascades between the river Krka and the unspoilt beauty of Lake Visovac. Shaped by canyons into water funnels, the ‘Necklaces’ of Roški Slap span around 650 metres in total with a total height difference of 25.5 metres. The spacing between the different cascades of the ‘Necklaces’ gives the waterfall an added charm and draws significant numbers of tourists.

Distance from Split:  A 1 and a half hour drive

Closest Park Entrance:  Roški slap/Laškovica

Accessibility:  Moderate. These falls can be accessed either by a boat which connects these falls to Skradinski Buk, or you can drive to the Roški slap/Laškovica entrance to Krka National Park. Either way, these falls are more remote than Skradinski Buk.

Perhaps the easiest way to visit Roški Slap waterfall is via a guided full day tour . The tour also includes a swim near the spectacular falls.

With five official entrances to Krka National Park, planning your visit to Krka may not be quite as straightforward as you think.

Below I will tell you everything you need to know about planning a visit to Krka National Park.

How Far are the Krka Waterfalls from Split?

Krka National Park encompasses an area of 109 square kilometres and has five official entrances. Distances to the different entrances can vary quite drastically.

For example, the entrance at Skradin town is just over an 1 hour’s drive from Split whereas the entrance at Roški slap is roughly a 1 and a half hour drive from Split.

The Lozovac entrance to the park is in fact the closest entrance to Split both in physical distance and drive time, coming in at roughly 1 hour.

Bus journeys take a similar amount of time.

We’ll delve into more details on how to travel to the Krka waterfalls from Split later in the article.

Skradinski Buk Waterfall in Krka National Park, Croatia

Which Entrance is Best for the Krka Waterfalls?

Both the Skradin and Lozovac entrances to Krka are in close proximity to Krka’s most impressive set of waterfalls: Skradinski Buk. Although there’s a little more of a drive involved, the Skradin entrance is by far the most convenient entrance to the park, especially if you wish to visit Skradinski Buk.

The Skradin entrance is actually in a town called Skradin which is located on the banks of the Krka river, just below the national park. From here you will take a scenic boat ride to Skradinski Buk waterfall where you will depart and officially enter the park.

The Lozovac entrance is slightly further away from Skradinski Buk but is a great entrance if you wish to visit Visovac Island, a stunning island in the middle of the Krka river which houses a spectacular Franciscan monastery.

Krka National Park Tickets: Cost & Where to Buy Them

You buy your tickets for park entry from official vendors at each of the park’s five entrances including in Skradin town.

From June to September the charge for a whole day is around 200 Croatian Kuna ($25 USD), and outside peak season it’s about half that price.

Children under 7 go free, and you can buy packages of three-day visits which help reduce the cost further.

Krka National Park Opening Times

Between 1st April and 15th October Krka National Park is open from 8am to 6pm.

In June, July and August the park is open for an extra 30 minutes, closing at 6.30pm.

From 16th October to 31st March Krka National Park is open from 9am to 4pm. It is worth noting that parts of the park including the Monastery are closed at this time of year.

Should you use a Tour Company or Visit Krka National Park Independently?

You don’t have to be an intrepid traveller to get from Split to Krka, especially not after reading this guide will tell you everything you need to know about organising your own visit.

I visited Krka independently and the experience was smooth and straightforward. However, if you prefer to have the planning taken out of your vacation, then a tour may be a preferable option for you.

A tour that starts from Split is also extremely convenient if you haven’t rented a car as it includes transport to and from Krka National Park.

The good news is there is a whole host of tours available, from a simple visit to the waterfalls with a boat cruise and visits involving a swimming stop , through to combining the Krka waterfalls with a wine tasting tour lasting around ten hours.

My Top Picks!

This Krka Waterfalls tour which includes delicious food and wine tasting is my top recommendation. The tour has exceptional online reviews and allows you to sample some of the best culinary delights in the areas!

If you want to skip the wine tasting then this full-day tour of Krka Waterfalls would be my recommendation for you. It includes a leisurely swim on one of Primošten’s spectacular pebble beaches.

Boat to Krka National Park, Croatia

In this section I will talk in detail about the different options of reaching Krka National Park through the town of Skradin, which a settlement pretty much entirely geared to supporting the park and eco-tourism.

This entrance is the most accessible, closest to Krka’s key waterfall and you will find ample parking opportunities here.

The journey to Krka consists of two main parts: the car or bus journey to Skradin and then the boat ride from Skradin to the heart of Krka National Park.

Tip!  If using a sat-nav for your journey, be sure to use ‘Skradin’ as your destination, not ‘Krka’.

Krka Waterfalls from Split By Car

There are two routes from Split to reach Skradin town.

Route 1: The Most Direct Route With Tolls

The most direct route is to follow the D1 towards Sinj. When you get to Dugopolje, follow the signs marked Zagreb/Šibenik. This then connects you with the E65 toll highway, which only costs a couple of Euro. Leave the highway at Exit 21 marked for Skradin and then use D56 to reach the town.

Route 2: The Scenic Route Without Tolls

An alternative and my preferred route is to head along the coast road and take in the UNESCO world heritage sites of Trogir and Šibenik.

Driving this way is about 30 minutes longer, plus you may wish to allow some stoppage time in some of the gorgeous towns that you pass through on the way. There’s a plethora to see and do in these towns. For example, take a look at these best things to do in Sibenik .

There is no toll this way and the correct roads are a combination of the E65 and E71 (they interchange). From Šibenik, you then take the D56 to reach Skradin.

Is There Parking in Skradin?

There is plenty of parking in Skradin, but it comes with a small and variable charge based on duration, and is payable in native currency. There are several carparks to choose from.

Visiting Krka via Skradin is very popular and the carparks can get quite full, therefore it’s advisable to arrive as early as possible to ensure you get good parking.

From Skradin you will take a boat into the heart of Krka National Park. We’ll talk more about the boat below in the ‘Krka Waterfalls from Split By Boat’ section.

Tip!  In order to get the best parking, aim to arrive in Skradin no later than 10am.

Skradin Town in Croatia

Krka Waterfalls from Split By bus

There are up to ten buses a day from the bus station in Split to Skradin, taking between an hour and a quarter and an hour and a half to make the journey.

The most frequent services are pretty much hourly between 9am and 12pm via the bigger and more direct toll road.

Options include CroatiaBus or the 942b Flixbus. The price is around ten $10 USD and varies depending on which operator you choose, but in reality there is little between them.

Bus times usually take just over an hour although some buses can take up to 1 and a half hours.

Can You Reach Krka National Park by Ferry?

Although the Krka river on which the national park is located does feed into the ocean, there are no ferry options available.

Should you wish to, you can however take a private boat to Skradin town, journeying up the Krka river, and from there take the official boat from Skradin to Krka National Park. There is anchorage available just outside of Skradin town.

Skradin Harbour on Krka River, Croatia

The Boat from Skradin to Krka National Park

When you are in Skradin the quickest and easiest way to reach Krka National Park is by a river boat from the town to enter Krka National Park.

The boat does not operate in the deep winter and has a schedule which begins at 9am in the Spring and Autumn, and 9am in the Summer.

The frequency of the trips also increases in the summer. Depending on when you are going, it is a good idea to check out the boat schedule .

The river journey to the park entrance proper is around twenty minutes.

The boat was in fact one of my favourite things about my visit Krka National Park. The boat ride consists of ample views of Krka’s forests and craggy cliffs. I was also mesmerised by how clear the waters below were and marvelled at the array of birdlife that we passed.

If you don’t fancy taking the boat then it is also possible to hike or cycle from Skradin to the park entrance, but this takes a lot longer and the route is not the easiest since it is a journey of almost four kilometres each way. You can hire bikes within Skradin town.

Boat from Skradin Town to Krka National Park in Croatia

There are different ways to experience the range of attractions in Krka National Park. Below I have created two potential itineraries: one for a half day visit and one for a full day visit.

There are places to eat throughout the main parts of the park, or you can bring your own food.

Half Day Krka National Park Itinerary

With half a day you will only really have time to explore Skradinski Buk but of course that will enable you to see the most famous and arguably most spectacular falls of the Krka National Park.

Step 1: Arrive in Skradin Town

Set-off from Split between 8am and 9am in order to arrive in Skradin town no later than 10am.

Skradin is a peaceful little town with ample cafes where you can grab a bite to eat. If you haven’t eaten already, I’d recommend stopping off at one of the cafes for a late breakfast or snack before your trip to Krka National Park.

Step 2: The Boat from Skradin to Skradinski Buk

Once you have purchased your tickets from the ticket office in Skradin, take the next boat into Krka National Park. The 30 minute boat ride from Skradin will take you to Skradinski Buk waterfall.

Skradinski Buk Waterfall in Krka National Park, Croatia

Step 3: Walk the Skradinski Buk Circular Trail

Once at Skradinski Buk, enjoy the waterfall’s 17 cascades by taking the circular walk around the falls. The walk is 1.2 miles long and should take an hour or so depending on your walking speed.

The walk starts by crossing the great wooden bridge to the right of the falls. From there you will contend with a series of stone steps which will take you to the very top of the falls.

The walk can be quite tiresome at first as you ascend countless stone steps up quite a steep elevation. The steps are broken up by frequent views of Skradinski Buk’s many cascades and the mesmerising crystal clear pools beneath each fall.

Once at the top of the falls you will find yourself within a small, traditional village. Here you will find shops selling refreshments, souvenirs and even a museum.

The remainder of the walk follows a wooden walkway which meanders over the river and through swathes of peaceful forest. This was arguably my favourite part of the walk. I never got tired of watching the fish swim beneath the calm, clear waters of the river.

The walk loops back down to the lower cascades of the falls. Here you will find many vendors selling food and souveniers. You may wish to stop here for a bite to eat before taking the boat back to Skradin town.

Skradinski Buk Waterfall in Krka National Park, Croatia

Full Day Krka National Park Itinerary: Skradinski Buk & Roški Slap

To experience both Skradinski Buk and Roški Slap will take a full day since they are some distance apart within the park.

The good news is the two waterfalls are connected by boat between April and October, making for a smooth and easy visit.

For this itinerary you will want to set-off from Split as early as possible. The park opens at 8am so in order to get the most from your day you will want to start your journey from Split at 7am in order to reach Skradin town at 8am. You’ll want to arrive in Skradin no later than 9am.

Skradin is a peaceful little town with ample cafes where you can grab a bite to eat. If you haven’t eaten already, I’d recommend stopping off at one of the cafes for some breakfast.

Step 2: The Boat to Skradinski Buk and Walk the Skradinski Buk Circular Trail

Follow the same itinerary as detailed in the half day itinerary above, taking the 30 minute boat to Skradinski Buk and then enjoying the leisurely and stunning walk around the falls. The walk covers an area of 1.2 miles and should take 1 or 2 hour to complete.

Krka National Park, Croatia

Step 3: The Boat from Skradinski Buk to Roški Slap

Once you have fully experienced Skradinski Buk and marvelled at the falls there, get your boat ticket and head out to Roški Slap. This part of the day should take around four hours including cruise time up the river and back.

As well as seeing the falls at Roški Slap, if you are fit then you should also try and visit the Oziđana cave , though beware that there are over five hundred steps each way.

Most boat trips between the two waterfalls also make a half an hour or so stop at the Visovac monastery. This working monastery is owned by the Catholic Church and has been established for six hundred years and is a welcoming place to break your journey in the lake at the base of Roski Slap. It has a tranquil ambience that many find enchanting.

Clear Waters of Krka National Park, Croatia

Although it may look possible and appealing, there is a strict no swimming rule at the Krka waterfalls since 2021 on the grounds of safety and also to improve the ecosystem at the park . Although we don’t stop to think about it, swimming in natural havens such as Krka can have a negative impact on the nature. Suncreams can pollute the water and our feet can damage life on the riverbed floor.

Some people flout this rule, but don’t be tempted to follow them! There are plenty of other swimming spots within the national park.

The two most popular national parks of Croatia are both distinct and come with their own advantages and disadvantages. Though Plitvice is a bigger park, and has very picturesque waterfalls too, it is about twice the distance from Split as is Krka. Also, most tourism businesses in Split are geared more to day trips to Krka rather than Plitvice. It really comes down to which part of the Dalmatian coast you are in, and how much time you want to spend travelling to the parks. Whichever option you choose, you’ll still have the opportunity to experience first hand the unique and enchanting natural landscape of beautiful Croatia.

If you are planning on visiting Krka Waterfalls as part of your Croatia trip and haven’t booked anywhere to stay, booking a hostel in Split is a great option as most tours to Krka depart from Split. Split is also a central location that gives you access to a host of Croatia’s attractions.

Here are my top recommendations for hotels in Split!

Four Elements Hotel is a sustainable property that’s just a stone-throw away from Split’s gorgeous coastline. The hotel has exceptional online reviews.

Another fantastic option is Priska Heritage Rooms which is located just a short walk away from Split’s key attractions, in the heart of the city.

My final recommendation is Makarun Heritage Rooms , another hotel with impeccable reviews. This hotel is also rated as a sustainable property and during your stay you can look forward to a delicious breakfast each morning.

Visiting Krka National Park was undoubtably one of the highlights of my trip to Croatia. From enjoying breakfast in Skradin town to taking the boat up-river and finally walking around the majestic Skradinski Buk, my day trip to Krka was memorable in many ways.

Organising a day trip to Krka is easy to do on your own and has the benefit that it comes with complete flexibility for you to customise your trip. However, there are many tours available, which may be a preferred option as all planning is taken care of for you. View a full list of Krka National Park tours here .

A complete guide to the incredible Krka waterfalls in Croatia

krka falls tour

While Plitvice Lakes may have the best known waterfalls in Croatia, there’s another set that are well worth the trip: the gem-toned Krka waterfalls.

Formed like a series of terraces, the Krka and Čikola Rivers spill over 17 travertine steps into deep pools before flowing into the next set, creating Skradinski Buk which towers 45 metres high. The Krka falls are so strong they helped power the world’s second oldest hydro-electric plant, yet the pool below is so tranquil that you can still swim right underneath.

Visiting Krka National Park

The waterfalls are located in Krka National Park in southern Croatia, which is about a one hour drive from Split or Zadar . It’s proximity to major cities makes this a great day trip option, and can be combined with wine tasting and exploring neighbouring Šibenik or Skradin :

The park is 142 square km centering around the jade green Krka river, and aside from the waterfalls there’s plenty more to explore including bike trails and five medieval fortresses. One of the fun things to do in Krka National Park is taking a boat over to the small island of Visovac, which was settled in 1445 by Franciscan monks and has a monastery with a library and preserved artifacts.

If time allows, take a boat trip (which is included with your Krka National Park entrance fee) to see the Roski Slap waterfall which is made up of 12 separate falls flowing over 450 metres, including one that’s an astounding 60 metres wide and 22 metres high.

The boat to go to Krka National Park in Croatia

An unforgettable experience is swimming right under the Krka waterfalls, and taking a dip in the emerald pools is the perfect way to beat the summer heat. There are also bathrooms and a cafe nearby, which is why many families enjoy spending the whole day here and having a picnic with a view of the falls as their backdrop.

Krka National Park, Croatia waterfalls

There isn’t much to note when it comes to hiking Krka National Park, since there’s only one trail which is essentially a wooden boardwalk. Looping past a small village with a working blacksmith and loom that illustrates what life was like here pre-Industrial Revolution, the pathway winds past shaded ponds and lush foliage towards lookout points of Skradinski Buk.

The trail only takes about an hour to complete and is mostly flat; however, it’s not ideal for wheelchairs or strollers.

Planning a Krka National Park tour

There are 10 different ways to get into the park, and if you arrive at the Skradin entrance you get to take a boat ride through the canyon to Skradinski Buk. It only takes a few hours to see the main waterfall, walk around the loop trail and go for a quick swim; however, there’s so much to see throughout the rest of the park that you’ll want to spend at least a full day here if possible.

Krka National Park accommodation

Since Krka is relatively close to cities like Split, Trogir and Zadar, the best bet is to base yourself in one of those and just take a day trip to Krka since there are more accommodation options. If you’re interested in staying close by, here are a few B&B options:

  • Scardona Park Luxury Accomodation: The updated rooms at this hotel in Skradin have outdoor patios, private bathrooms and air conditioning. There’s also a pool, garden and terrace. Click to book
  • Guest Accomodation Grozdanic: This guesthouse in the village of Dubravice just seven minutes from Krka National Park has very basic rooms at budget rates, and there’s also an outdoor swimming pool. Click to book

We went to Karka N Park 16/6/22. Took boat to Skradin and walked back (1 hr) You can’t walk up past Skradin Falls only visit the lower falls. We drove up to Ruski Falls (30 mins). Swimming allowed in area of river away from falls which are viewed from a distance. Then drove to (30 mins) to Mansjlovac Falls. Much higher and viewed from a distance. Slightly disappointed no swimming at Skradin and Ruski Falls viewed from distance. But still well worth the visit.

There is no doubt that the Adriatic Sea along Croatia’s coastline is a stunning stretch of water. The crystal clear water ranges in color from cobalt blue to turquoise, varying in intensity depending on sunlight and depth.

However, Croatia’s appealing aqueous beauty isn’t exclusive to the shore. Flowing rivers and teal lakes off the coast of Croatia have a series of tumbling waterfalls that rival the splendor of the ocean. These grandiose Croatia waterfalls are exactly what lured us to visit Krka National Park on a day trip.

About Krka National Park, Croatia

River and Waterfalls at Krka National Park

The Krka Waterfalls, created by the phenomenon of naturally-made travertine barriers, are a mesmerizing sight. A day trip to Krka National Park, however, often takes a backseat to the more famous Plitvice Lakes in Croatia.

We had visited Plitvice Lakes in Winter on our way from Split to Zagreb – and on a subsequent trip to Croatia in Autumn , so visiting Krka National Park for the day was at the top of our list of things to see while we were in staying Zadar. That said, Krka is easy to get to from several Croatian cities and we have since returned to Krka Waterfalls on a day trip from Split!

Krka National Park – rated one of the best national parks in Croatia – encompasses 42 square miles around the Krka River. In addition to the waterfalls at Krka, the park features archaeological ruins, churches, islands and caves, all reachable by organized Krka Tours. The main attraction at Krka NP is Skradinski buk, the largest waterfall on the Krka River.

Visiting Krka Waterfalls, Croatia on a Day Trip

At the base of Skradinski buk in Kraka National Park

From Zadar, we opted to explore on our own self-guided Krka National Park tour. Our discovery of the park began the moment we stepped through the Krka main gate – as we could hear the rush of water before we came face-to-face with Skradinski buk. Thanks to the previous days’ rain, thundering water was pouring over these magnificent, multi-leveled Croatian waterfalls. Under a cloudless, blue Dalmatian sky, the rays of light magnified the mist that dampened our cheeks.

Krka National Park Walking Path

Rainbow over Krka National Park

A path – part wooden plank, part concrete, part dirt trail – loops around and over the clear Krka waters, allowing us to see the river from nearly every angle. We started our tour of Krka NP by crossing the bridge on the right of Skradinski buk.

After climbing a short series of steps, we reached a Krka Waterfall viewing platform that provided a new perspective. The quick moving water created rapids of white and a rainbow appeared in the billowing mist. Water, illuminated in the sunlight, flowed over smooth rocks and was a stream of glittering seafoam green as it spilled over a rocky ledge.

Krka NP Historical Sights

Small stone church at Krka National Park

Before we continued over the Krka Falls on the wooden footpath, we did a quick tour of the area. A small church remains from long before the area was designated a national park of Croatia.

Museums highlight the culture of the civilizations that once occupied the area, including displays of traditional clothing and tools. A Krka restaurant with a prime riverside location looked inviting, but we passed by and began our walk over the top of Krka Falls.

Crossing the Top of Krka Waterfalls

Wooden path over water at Krka National Park

The water at Krka swiftly moves under the elevated boardwalks that have no railing. We meandered through trees and past small patches land, completely enveloped in lush vegetation. The Krka water clarity was impeccable; we could see rocks and roots in the shallow pools, long reeds being pulled by the strong current and playful fish shimmering about. The constant movement of water was our soundtrack as it poured down the smaller Krka falls toward Skradinski buk.

Wooden paths over waterfalls at Krka National Park

We could see flowing water in every direction and felt as if we’ve entered a magical water world. By this point, the Krka crowds had arrived and people pushed past us, but we kept our slow, steady pace, soaking it all in. Through breaks in the trees, we could see across the Krka Valley. The scene looked like a painter’s masterpiece, but only blue, green and yellow were on the artist’s palette. On our descent, we took detours to lookout points – again viewing the mighty length of Skradinski buk.

Autumn leaves at Krka National Park

When we completed the last section of the Krka trail back to the bottom of Skradinski buk, we entered what felt like an enchanted forest. Water cascaded over rocks and momentarily collected into pools before spilling over into yet another waterfall. The scene when we visited the Krka waterfalls was completely surreal; we almost expected to see glowing fairies zip through the air!

Swimming at Krka National Park, Croatia

An afternoon sun highlights the gushing Skradinski buk waterfall at Krka National Park

We completed the rest of the trail, but weren’t quite ready to leave. Instead, we found a rock in the sun at the edge of the thundering Krka waterfalls. Swimming in Krka was allowed along the base of Skradinski buk, but the cooler temperatures and swift water kept most people on dry land. Only a few brave souls ventured in for a dip, but none lasted long. Update : Swimming at Krka Waterfalls is no longer permitted!

How To Visit Krka National Park

Krka Waterfalls, Croatia

Visiting Krka National Park Waterfalls can be organized with a tour group, private guide or on your own. Krka National Park has five separate entrances, two of which put Skradinski buk in easy reach: Skradin and Lozovac.

If accessing Krka via Skradin (where there is a bus stop and parking lot), visitors will need to take the Skradin to Krka Ferry to the main entrance. There is an official Krka National Park ticket office next to the ferry in Skradin. The Krka ferry departs hourly and is included with the price of admission.

Pro Tip : Try to get a Krka ferry seat with a view! During the 30 minute ride to the Krka Waterfalls, we stood along the side with the wind on our faces, delighting in nature under the golden autumn sun. Swans glided at the edge of the rolling green hills and we caught sight of a few fishermen tucked between the reeds.

Krka National Park Entrance Fee

Krka National Park: A day trip from Zadar

The Krka Waterfalls price depends on time of year, sections of Krka park you want to visit and guest’s age. The cost of the Krka National Park entry fee varies greatly by season.

If you book a Krka Tour or private guide, the Krka waterfalls entrance fee may be included. However, be sure to confirm all details before booking your day trip to Krka tour. You can also check the current Krka National Park Ticket Prices ahead of your trip to Croatia.

How To Get To The Krka Waterfalls

View from the Krka Waterfalls Boat, Croatia

Krka National Park can be accessed by tour group, private guide, personal car and public bus. Located just off the Dalmatian Coast, makes it within easy reach from many top cities in Croatia.

Although there are multiple entrances to Krka Waterfalls, if you are arriving by bus or rental car, we recommend entering Krka from Skradin. That way you can take the (included) boat ride to the main Krka entrance and enjoy the beautiful town of Skradin as well!

Driving To Krka National Park

Self-driving allows for the most freedom in planning your day trip to Krka Waterfalls. Get driving directions on Google Maps to the Skradin Krka ticket office. If you need to hire a car, read our tips for cheap car rentals and then begin searching for deals !

Public Transportation or Krka Tours

Visitors can also travel to Krka Park on a day trip on their own. Public transportation is available from many nearby cities, making for an easy Day Trip from Zadar , Sibenik and Split.

However, there are numerous Organized Krka Tours that include a knowledgeable guide and the opportunity to meet fellow travelers. Below we detail the options and information for DIY Krka trips with public transport and top-rated Krka tours from Popular Destinations in Croatia .

Zadar, Croatia to Krka National Park

When we decided to travel from Zadar to Krka Waterfalls, we debated between taking the Zadar-Krka bus or joining a tour from Zadar. While a Krka tour from Zadar would have been the easiest option, it didn’t fit into our budget at the time.

To get from Zadar to Krka, we took a bus directly to Skradin. Our online research indicated that the route wouldn’t be possible during our mid-October visit – instead we would have to go to Sibenik and then catch a different bus to Skradin or Lozovar. However, when we inquired at the Zadar Bus Station, we were able to buy direct tickets to Skradin.

Public Transport from Zadar to Krka Waterfalls : Check Zadar-Krka bus timetables on BusCroatia , but we recommend confirming route times at the bus stations on either end.

Zadar to Krka National Park Tour : A highly-rated Zadar to Krka tour can be booked in advance .

{If you are staying in Zadar, be sure to use our Self-Guided Walking Tour }

Zadar Walking Tour: A Self-Guided Walk to 26 Sights by JetSettingFools.com

Pro Tip : If you’d like to visit more nature parks in Croatia, there is another national park near Zadar: Kornati Islands .

Split to Krka National Park

When we returned to Croatia and wanted to visit Krka Waterfalls from Split, we decided to go with this tour . And it was an amazing day! That said, it is still possible to visit Krka from Split with public transport.

Public Transport from Split to Krka : To plan your own Split to Krka day trip via public transportation, check Split-Krka bus timetables, and again, we recommend confirming times at the bus station.

Krka Tour from Split : There are several other options for a Krka National Park tour from Split, Trogir or even Makarska . A popular (and highly-rated) tour that includes both the waterfalls and food and wine tasting can be booked in advance .

{Before you visit Split, read our Split Sightseeing Guide and 3-Day Split Itinerary }

Fun Things To Do in Split Croatia by JetSettingFools.com

Dubrovnik to Krka National Park

There is no direct public transportation option between Dubrovnik and Krka Waterfalls (and it really is too far for a Krka Day Trip).

Dubrovnik to Krka NP Private Guide : It is best to book a private guide for the trip from Dubrovnik to Krka if that’s your only option. It will take about 3.5 hours each way. Communicate in advance with the tour guide so that you can set your expectations for your Dubrovnik Day Trip .

Zagreb to Krka National Park

We also believe it’s too long of a day to visit Krka from Zagreb with public transport, but if you’re already traveling from Zagreb to Dalmatia, it could work as a stop-over on your way.

Public Transport from Zagreb to Krka Waterfalls : There is limited direct public transport from Zagreb to Krka – and the ride will take more than 4 hours each way.

Zagreb to Krka Day Tour: If attempting to visit Krka National Park on a Day Trip from Zagreb , it is best to hire a private guide to make the trip.

{See our list of Terrific Things To Do in Zagreb }

22 Terrific Things To Do in Zagreb, Croatia by JetSettingFools.com

Sibenik to Krka National Park

Sibenik is the closest large Croatian city to Krka Waterfalls, so it’s actually quite simple to visit Krka NP from Sibenik.

Public Transport from Sibenik to Krka Waterfalls : The Sibenik-Krka bus is an easy way to get to the park and we still recommend using the Skradin entrance. The Skradin-Sibenik bus route takes just 30 minutes.

Sibenik to Krka Day Tour : While it is fairly easy to get to Krka from Sibenik, there are private Krka tours, too – like this one !

Krka National Park – boat excursions inside the park

Krka Tour Boat Waterfalls

The Krka National Park is one of the most famous and beautiful parks in the Republic of Croatia, which offers a visit to beautiful waterfalls and unforgettable scenes, as well as boat trips. The Krka waterfalls can be reached with the help of our daily Krka tours from Split, however, many visitors and tourists can ask us if there are boat trips within the national park and whether a ticket can be purchased for them. There are three boat excursion routes inside the Krka national park named the Visovac Island Tour, the Roški Slap Tour and the Krka Monastery Tour and the Trošenj and Nečven Forts. Boat excursion tickets can be taken inside the National Park itself.

Visovac Island tour

Visovac is reached by a boat starting from Skradinski buk, and because of its attractiveness, the island itself attracted pilgrims for many years, and today pilgrimage trips to that island are organized. This tour lasts an average of two hours and includes half-an-hour sightseeing of the church, Franciscan monastery and museum.

Raška Waterfall Tour

The Roški waterfall is also a boat tour from Skradinski buk and the excursion itself lasts four hours and includes a visit to the island of Visovac and passing by the Roški waterfall.

Krka Monastery and the Trošenj and Nečven fortifications

The Krka Monastery is a spiritual centre for Orthodox believers that is very attractive to visitors. This boat tour takes an average of 2 hours and 30 minutes

You can find tour prices on the official website of Krka National Park.
