Jurgen Klopp needs to oversee a big summer if Liverpool are to rebound in 2023/24

A big summer at Liverpool beckons, with Jurgen Klopp needing to oversee a quick rebuild if the Reds are to compete for major honours in 2023/24.

It was a season of disappointment as the Reds came ever so close to completing the quadruple in 2021/22. A myriad of factors have played roles in the club's demise in 2022/23, with shrewd recruitment required this summer.

Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai have already have arrived from Brighton and RB Leipzig respectively as new faces on board for the club's pre-season tour.

Here's what we know about the Reds' summer plans so far.

Klopp revealed most of his squad would return from their holidays on Saturday 8 July before those on international duty come back on Tuesday 11 July.

Liverpool's pre-season begins with a training camp in Germany where the 2020 Premier League champions will play two matches against opposition from the nation's second tier; Karlsruher SC and Greuther Furth. On the club's last trip to Germany for pre-season back in 2017, Liverpool were ordered to pay €3,000 for damages caused to a press tent.

The Reds then jet off to Singapore to compete in the Festival of Football . Liverpool are scheduled to face Leicester City and Bayern Munich in the same stadium where they beat Crystal Palace last year to claim the snappily named Standard Chartered Singapore Trophy.

Liverpool pre-season 2023/24 confirmed schedule.

All times BST.

Bayern Munich and Darmstadt 98, Liverpool's last two opponents of the summer, are the only top flight clubs Klopp's side will face this pre-season.

Karlsruher and Greuther Furth finished seventh and 12th respectively in the German second division, at least 20 points behind the promotion spots. Klopp is no stranger to 2. Bundesliga, spending his entire playing career with Mainz 05 below Germany's top flight - it was only when Klopp became manager that the club won its first-ever promotion.

The clash with Karlsruher provided six goals as the Reds ran out 4-2 winners, though only Diogo Jota's late double ensured the victory. Darwin Nunez opened the scoring early on before Lars Stindl and Sebastian Jung struck to put the German side ahead. Cody Gakpo equalised before Jota got his brace in added time.

A 4-4 draw with Greuther Furth provided even more nonsense. Luis Diaz's effort was the only goal of the first half before things exploded after the break.

Julian Green's equaliser was quickly struck off by two Nunez efforts, only for Lukas Petkov and Armindo Sieb to square the game at 3-3. Sieb's second looked to have won the game for Greuther Furth, but Mohamed Salah grabbed Liverpool's fourth in the 89th minute.

Next opponents Leicester finished 33 points and 13 places below Liverpool in the Premier League last season, losing home and away against the Reds on their way out of the top flight.

Liverpool will then duke it out with Thomas Tuchel's Bundesliga champions before a final outing with Darmstadt at Deepdale.

Liverpool pre-season 2023/24 squad

Liverpool named a 32-player squad for a training camp in Germany. Fabinho, a transfer target for Al Ittihad, has been left out as his departure draws ever closer.

New signings Mac Allister and Szoboszlai make the cut, as does Jordan Henderson who is another Reds star linked with a move to the Middle East.

Liverpool pre-season has begun and the first group of players have arrived back at the AXA Training Centre to be put through their paces this summer by Jürgen Klopp and the rest of his coaching staff.

Adrián, Stefan Bajčetić , Fabinho, Joe Gomez, Joël Matip , Darwin Núñez , Nat Phillips and Thiago Alcântara have all reported back today, on day one of pre-season. The Reds players who have been on international duty during the summer will then get their schedule underway on Tuesday.

Among the players in the second group back will be new midfield duo Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai , who arrived from Brigton and RB Leipzig respectively after their release clauses were triggered.

Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones will join up at a later date — they could both feature as England U21s take on Spain U21s in the U21 Euros final tonight. With competition for midfield places high, though, neither is likely to want to wait that long to make a return.

Here are all the details you need to know about pre-season, including all the summer fixtures, dates, kick-off times, and how to watch the matches, plus a look ahead to the start of the Premier League season.

Liverpool pre-season fixtures, dates and kick-off times

Karlsruher SC — Weds, July 19 (5.30pm UK time, 9.30am west coast, 12.30pm east coast)

Greuther Fürth — Mon, July 24 (12pm UK time, 4am west coast, 7am east coast)

Leicester City — Sun, July 30 (10am UK time, 2am west coast, 5am east coast)

Bayern Munich — Weds, Aug 2 (12.30pm UK time, 4.30am west coast, 7.30am east coast)

Darmstadt — Mon, Aug 7 (7pm UK time, 7pm west coast, 7pm east coast)

How to watch pre-season friendlies on TV

Every Liverpool friendly will be available to watch on LFCTV GO and you can follow all the updates and analysis across Liverpool.com , on the website, on social media and everywhere else you can think of!

The Reds will be training over the next 36 days and building up sharpness ahead of the Premier League kick-off against Chelsea on August 13, with that match set to be the first competitive game in charge for new boss Mauricio Pochettino .

It is possibly not the worst time to be playing Chelsea, with that trip to Stamford Bridge coming on day one. With so much talent in the squad, Pochettino is likely to need a bit more time to pick out his best starting XI and get his players firing.

By getting that trip to Stamford Bridge out of the way in the first weekend, Liverpool could have an advantage over some of their rivals who go and play Chelsea later in the season.

First five fixtures of the Premier League season

Chelsea (A) — Sun, Aug 13 (4.30pm UK time, 8.30am west coast, 11.30am east coast)

Bournemouth (H) — Sat, Aug 19 (3pm UK time, 7am west coast, 10am east coast)

Newcastle United (A) — Sun, Aug 27 (4.30pm UK time, 8.30am west coast, 11.30am east coast)

Aston Villa (H) — Sun, Sept 3 (2pm UK time, 6am west coast, 9am east coast)

Wolves (A) — Sat, Sept 16 (12.30pm UK time, 4.30am west coast, 7.30am east coast)

Before that game against Wolves, there is another international break, meaning that Liverpool is the first team back in action when the players reconvene.

After that game, there are matches against West Ham, Spurs and Brighton before the first Merseyside derby of the season against Everton, which is at Anfield .

Only matches until the end of September have been changed for television so far, so any fixtures after that are provisional in terms of kick-off time and the day of the match could alter slightly as well.

Liverpool will be playing a lot more often on Sundays, for instance, because of its involvement in the Europa League on Thursdays.

  • Are Liverpool coming to New York for a 2023 pre-season tour despite FSG exit?

The world’s most elite clubs will regularly schedule their pre-season friendlies for the following season 6-12 months in advance. A return to the United States was a massive possibility for Liverpool FC during the summer discussions surrounding their 2023 pre-season tour.

Billy Hogan, the current chief executive for Liverpool , described the process for the 2023 pre-season tour, and a return to the US was naturally a front-runner as the club is owned by the Fenway Sports Group.

Since FSG purchased Liverpool in 2010, tours in North America were expected, as the new owners are based in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. The Reds have visited the United States for pre-season friendlies on three separate occasions since 2015.

Liverpool pre-season schedule (2015-2022):

2015 – Thailand, Australia, Malaysia

2016 – USA

2017 – Hong Kong

2018 – USA

2019 – USA

2020 – Cancelled

2021 – Cancelled

2022 – Thailand, Singapore

Is Liverpool returning to America in 2023?

Following consecutive cancellations due to the pandemic, Liverpool resumed their pre-season tour in 2022 when visiting the Far East. They arrived in Singapore after a 4-0 loss to Manchester United in Bangkok.

It’s no surprise that three of Liverpool’s previous six tours have been in the States, as the club has received colossal support Stateside because of the Fenway Sports Group.

With a three-year absence from competing in North America, many insiders believe that the US is a favourite destination for their 2023 tour.

Hogan, who’s been the chief executive for the Reds since 2020 – revealed that plans for next year are already underway and highlighted America as a significant possibility.

“We are already starting to look at where we could go next year,” he said.

“Asia has always had a massive Liverpool supporter base, and it’s a big place, so there are lots of places to go.

“We’ve looked at several different markets. North America is another one, and the US is a partner that continues to grow.”

Liverpool’s tour in 2019 saw them compete on the east coast of America. Notre Dame , Boston, and New York City hosted the Reds, who competed against Borussia Dortmund, Sevilla, and Sporting CP. And although next year’s potential US visit would see them arrive on the west coast, a return to Boston and New York, where Liverpool evidently possesses a strong fan base, would be an excellent choice.

As the legalisation of sports betting arrived in the Empire State earlier this year, Caesars New York sportsbook would be one of the primary sports betting providers for a fixture that could take place in the Big Apple.

Sports wagering and soccer go hand-in-hand; as the world’s most popular sport, it’s naturally a considerable attraction for bettors across the planet.

“Touring is never about short-term financial gain,” Hogan added.

“In fact, we try not to make short-term financial decisions because that can leave you in difficult places.

“It’s about the overall impact of bringing the club out to these markets. It takes more than a year for a tour to come together.

“We look at which markets are important for the club, our supporters and partners, and we try to put all that together.”

Is Liverpool up for sale?

If the recent rumours that Fenway Sports Group intends to sell Liverpool , there’s a chance this could prevent a 2023 return to the United States.

A report from Monday, 7 th November, claims that FSG, run by John W.Henry, has “put Liverpool up for sale”, just 12 years since they purchased the club.

FSG released a statement following the announcement: “There have been many recent changes of ownership and rumours of changes in ownership at EPL clubs, and inevitably we are asked regularly about Fenway Sports Group’s ownership in Liverpool.

“FSG has frequently received expressions of interest from third parties seeking to become shareholders in Liverpool. FSG has said before that under the correct terms and conditions, we would consider new shareholders if it was in the best interests of Liverpool as a club.

“FSG remains fully committed to the success of Liverpool, both on and off the pitch.”

Despite the positivity of this statement, FSG has been heavily criticised for lack of spending. Particularly during this summer’s transfer window, where the total net spend didn’t exceed £10 million. Considering the Red’s impressive 2021/22 season, where they reached the Champions League final, placed second in the Premier League below Man City by one point, and won both domestic cups, this small spending was seen as an insult to fans of the squad that deserved some minor revamps.

Whether FSG sells Liverpool or not, it’s doubtful this would affect a potential return to the USA for a 2023 tour. Likely, plans are already in place, and a pre-season location was decided without the information leaking to the media.

Liverpool set to headline European football clubs’ pre-season tour to Singapore

lfc pre season tour 2023

SINGAPORE – Six-time European champions Liverpool are likely to return to Singapore for their pre-season tour in July, with the likes of Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and new addition Cody Gakpo looking to light up the National Stadium.

While the conventional pre-season plan for top European clubs is to alternate between Asia and the United States every summer, sources told The Straits Times that Jurgen Klopp’s side will feature in a friendly tournament here instead of a tour of the US that was likely to feature a stop in Las Vegas.

The Reds were last in Singapore on July 15, 2022, when they beat Crystal Palace 2-0 in front of 50,217 fans to lift the Standard Chartered Singapore Trophy.

The other teams that could join them are English Premier League rivals Tottenham, German Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich and Italy’s Europa Conference League winners Roma, which could throw up a tantalising clash as their manager Jose Mourinho faces his former club Spurs.

Tottenham, who played in South Korea in 2022, have announced a pre-season match against West Ham in Perth on July 18, and they are looking to add two Asian stops that month.

Bayern will return to Asia after touring the US in 2022, as reported by German newspaper Bild. The club have an office in Bangkok and could visit and play in Singapore or Japan.

ST understands that this friendly tournament will not be part of the International Champions Cup that was last held in Singapore in 2019.

Liverpool and fellow English giants Manchester United as well as Germany’s Borussia Dortmund were lined up to play in the 2020 edition which was cancelled owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Several online media outlets, including Football Insider, have also corroborated the information on the pre-season tour.

Its Merseyside correspondent David Lynch reported that Klopp has suggested the timing of last season’s Asia tour – they also lost 4-0 to United in Bangkok – led to this term’s fitness problems, with muscle injuries plaguing key players like van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Thiago Alcantara and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The German manager said previously: “Would I do anything differently? I wouldn’t go, in the first week, to Asia. Not because Asia is not great but I would go to Asia in the third week, or something like that, but it was not really in our hands.”

As such, he could have his wish this season as Liverpool are expected to work on their fitness in the first week of pre-season closer to home, before flying to Asia in the third week.

This summer, Arsenal's main priority is to extend Mikel Arteta's contract. The Spanish manager has only a year left on his contract, and considering the job he and the club have done together in the past two seasons, pushing Manchester City all the way in the Premier league title races, agreeing fresh terms is vital for the club. Both parties want to continue together, so the agreement shouldn't be too difficult to find.

After securing most key players in the squad on long-term contracts, the Gunners, led by sporting director Edu, will not make many changes to the team, but could add a signee or two if they find an exit for some of their lesser-used players. The idea would be to bring in even more depth to allow Arteta & Co. to compete both domestically and in Europe -- and go all the way this time.

The team's progression in the past 2½ years has been impressive. The aim is to keep improving again next season with another year's worth of experience for the second-youngest squad in the English top flight. -- Julien Laurens

Summer friendly schedule:

- July 27: Manchester United ; Los Angeles - July 31: Liverpool ; Philadelphia

Chelsea will want to build on the momentum created at the end of last season, when they won their last five games to clinch a place in Europe. Mauricio Pochettino's departure was a surprise given Chelsea's late-season form, and there will be something of a reset under the new manager, but the overall aim will be to build on that their sixth-place finish.

As such, the preseason -- once their new manager is appointed -- will be vital for the club to build a cohesive squad and mould a group that has, at times, appeared to be thrown together by Todd Boehly. Chelsea have profit and sustainability rules (PSR) concerns, so there are likely to be some creative departures over the summer, but there will be additions too, with a focus on increasing goals to help ease the burden on Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku .

Chelsea will hope they can get their new signees in early and have the whole squad together in the United States . They started last season on the back foot after winning just one of their first six league games, and they need to be sharper in the early going this time around if they're to credibly challenge for the UEFA Champions League places. -- Rob Dawson

lfc pre season tour 2023

Liverpool's priority this summer is to make sure the transition from Jürgen Klopp to Arne Slot is as smooth as possible. It won't be easy for Slot to follow one of the greatest ever Liverpool managers, but it's vital that he gets off to a positive start.

David Moyes had a disastrous summer after taking over from Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United, and never recovered. Recruitment was scattergun and the summer tour was chaotic, leading United's senior players to question the appointment very early on. Moyes never recovered and was sacked the following April. The Anfield outfit needs to ensure that it doesn't make similar miscalculations.

In the transfer window, Liverpool will be looking to bolster their defence over the summer and add a reliable goal scorer. The main focus for Slot, though, will be to get key players to buy into what he is trying to do. Naturally, these preseason games in the U.S. will be the first chance for the Dutchman to get across his vision and show that his methods can work.

If Slot can get the likes of Alisson, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk onside then that will be a huge step in the right direction. Following Klopp will be a daunting task, but a hot start would certainly help. -- Dawson

- July 26: Real Betis ; Pittsburgh - July 31: Arsenal; Philadelphia - Aug. 3: Manchester United; Columbia, South Carolina

lfc pre season tour 2023

Manchester City

Manchester City will use the summer to put themselves in position to win an unprecedented fifth straight Premier League title. After winning the trophy in six of the past seven seasons, including the past four in a row, they know what they're doing. City have shown in the past that they can deal with key players leaving, and they'll back themselves to do it again.

As usual, money will be made available to strengthen the squad, and although there's not much wrong with Pep Guardiola's starting XI, he will want more depth in some areas ahead of another campaign challenging in the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup .

City will also want to know what Guardiola's plan is for his future. He has a contract at the Etihad Stadium until 2025, and if he's not going to sign a new deal, club bosses will want as much warning as possible so they can begin making a succession plan. City would like Guardiola to sign an extension, but there is an acceptance that he has already stayed in Manchester longer than he planned and that, after a golden era of success, he might be running out of motivation to remain in club football. -- Dawson

Manchester United

With uncertainty still surrounding the future of manager Erik ten Hag, United's summer will largely be dictated by the identity of the coach and some specific needs in terms of squad rebuilding. While every coach will have different requirements, last season's eighth-place showing in the Premier League -- United's lowest finish since 1990 -- highlighted areas of weakness that must be addressed no matter who is in charge.

United simply need reinforcements in every department of the squad. Raphaël Varane 's exit as a free agent means a new centre-half is high on the agenda, while younger, more durable midfielders are required to bolster a problem area on the team. With Sofyan Amrabat returning to Fiorentina at the end of his loan spell and Casemiro expected to leave, United clearly need new blood in midfield. Up front, United need at least one experienced striker to ease the load on Rasmus Hojlund, in terms of both goals and match rotation.

Off the pitch, United will hope to end the summer having negotiated Dan Ashworth's release from Newcastle United in order for him to start his role as director of football at Old Trafford. -- Mark Ogden

Tottenham Hotspur

Ange Postecoglou wants to reshape his Tottenham squad this summer, and it has been reported that as many as 11 players could leave the club in order to raise funds and clear space on the wage bill for new signings.

Richarlison , Emerson Royal , Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Giovani Lo Celso are among the experienced players that Postecoglou is ready to move on, while the likes of Sergio Reguilón , Tanguy Ndombele and Joe Rodon are similarly unlikely to have a place at Spurs following the end of their loan moves away from the club last season. Postecoglou wants players more capable of making his high-energy attacking game work, but there will also be a need to bolster his squad depth due to Spurs facing European commitments in the Europa League, having missed out on Europe entirely last season.

Tottenham's priority will be to boost their attacking options having failed to sign a striker to replace Harry Kane last season. The goals of Son Heung-Min helped soften the blow of losing their talisman to Bayern Munich last August, but Postecoglou has now charged the club's recruitment team with the difficult challenge of filling the gap left by Kane's departure. -- Ogden

Atlético Madrid

"The club has to work. An important summer is coming." Coach Diego Simeone -- speaking after Atlético's last game of the season -- couldn't have been much clearer.

A busy transfer window is expected at Atlético, with a major overhaul planned after a disappointing end to 2023-24. Yes, they finished fourth in LaLiga -- the minimum requirement for a team that has aspired to much more in the past decade under Simeone -- but some chastening results, including a 4-1 home defeat to Osasuna in May, highlighted the need for change.

A shake-up is expected in defence, midfield and attack, with a number of senior players departing. Sporting director Andrea Berta will look to build a new spine for the team, making signings in central defence, central midfield and at centre-forward. It will then be down to Simeone to blend those new faces with veterans who remain key players, like captain Koke and forward Antoine Griezmann . At the very least, Atlético will look to put themselves in a position to wrest the title of "LaLiga's third team" back from Girona ; at best, they'll want to challenge Real Madrid and Barcelona for the title, as they did successfully in 2014 and 2021.

Atlético haven't made their preseason plans official yet, but they're expected to travel to China, as well as playing friendlies in Europe. -- Alex Kirkland

Barcelona go into the summer with a new coach after the confirmation that former Bayern Munich and Germany boss Hansi Flick has replaced Xavi Hernández . However, the change in manager does not massively change the team's needs after a trophyless campaign. Addressing the lack of balance in midfield is the priority. Xavi said that was the team's biggest problem last season and the reason they went from conceding 20 goals in LaLiga in 2022-23 to 44 last term.

- Marsden, Llorens: Why Barca sacked Xavi, hired Flick

Any signings, though, are once again dependent on outgoings and the club's financial situation. They remain in excess of their LaLiga-imposed annual spending limit, which the most recent figures revealed has been reduced to €204 million , and must raise money before they can spend it. Sources, therefore, don't rule out a big-name departure if a satisfactory offer arrives and the player is willing to leave.

From there, once they have addressed their defensive midfield issues, Barça will assess whether they're capable of strengthening in other positions. Another forward, preferably a winger, would be next on the list of requirements. They were outscored by Real Madrid and Girona in LaLiga last season and should be wary of putting too much weight on teenager Lamine Yamal 's shoulders. -- Sam Marsden

Real Madrid

Real Madrid's summer revolves around the conclusion of the longest-running transfer saga of recent years: the belated arrival of Kylian Mbappé . From finally making his free transfer signing official, to finding time in the player's busy summer schedule with France for a blockbuster presentation at a packed Santiago Bernabeu, to his integration into the Madrid squad for preseason training and the club's high-profile U.S. tour, the spotlight on Mbappé will be relentless.

Otherwise, Madrid's focus is on how to repeat a hugely impressive 2023-24 and whether they can match, or even improve on, last season's domestic and European success. Not much work is needed on a well-balanced squad. Further additions would be welcome in defence, where strengthening may be required at centre-back and left-back.

Tactically, the task for coach Carlo Ancelotti and his staff will be helping the team adjust to life without Toni Kroos , who will retire after the European Championship. Kroos has set the tempo in Madrid's midfield for a decade, and despite the club's host of talented young midfielders, the German's influence -- as seen in Saturday's Champions League final -- won't be easy to replace. -- Kirkland

Bayer Leverkusen

While the final stretch of the 2023-24 campaign did not exactly go as hoped, with Leverkusen losing decisively to Atalanta in the UEFA Europa League final, the Werkself can nevertheless move forward with an overall feeling of great satisfaction after clinching a Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double. Xabi Alonso and his staff's attention will now turn to defending their Bundesliga title.

Key personnel should remain, with only one or two players expected to move on. We might not see much transfer activity from Leverkusen, but they could make a few specific additions in order to increase depth. Aleix García is expected to arrive from Girona to provide an alternative to Granit Xhaka in midfield. And if Jeremie Frimpong does depart, club bosses will be tasked with finding an equally dynamic wing-back to take his place.

Due to the draining 2023-24 campaign that saw Leverkusen play a total of 53 competitive games, the team will not go on tour overseas. Instead, the club are planning to work on a programme for the preseason. -- Constantin Eckner

Bayern Munich

The talk of the town has been Bayern's extended and bumpy managerial pursuit , but Max Eberl, the board member overseeing transfer activities, and sporting director Christoph Freund had already attempted to tweak the squad for 2024-25 without knowing who the next manager would be.

Uncertainty exists regarding the future of Alphonso Davies , as the Canada international has yet to sign a new contract, with his deal expiring in 2025. As for potential signings, Bayern will attempt to bring in players aged 26 or younger while maintaining the balance between well-known names and prospects with considerable upside. Incoming manager Vincent Kompany already has a few names Bayern in mind.

Bayern plan to kick off preseason training July 15, although those starring at Euro 2024 will join up later. Labelled the "Audi Summer Tour," Bayern will travel to South Korea, the home country of centre-back Kim Min-Jae , for promotional purposes. This will be Bayern's fourth trip to Asia in recent years. -- Eckner

Borussia Dortmund

Dortmund's summer break has officially begun after Saturday's Champions League final at Wembley. It has already been decided that the club will move forward with Edin Terzic as their manager despite some dire moments during a Bundesliga season (they finished fifth).

Their focus will be tying up permanent deals for Ian Maatsen and Jadon Sancho , on loan from Chelsea and Manchester United, respectively. Dortmund could even accept an extension of the loan agreement for Sancho until the end of 2024-25. Other than that, the club's transfer business will involve trying to sign a few talented, Bundesliga-proven players for a variety of roles, including central midfield, a winger as well as in attack.

For preseason, Dortmund will travel to Japan to reunite with Shinji Kagawa and take on the former BVB playmaker's Cerezo Osaka. In early August, Dortmund will once again hold a training camp in Bad Ragaz, Switzerland , a destination for hot springs and wellness retreats. -- Eckner

Milan are another club starting the new season with a new coach after moving on from Stefano Pioli , who had been in charge since 2019 and steered them to the Serie A title in 2021-22. Former AS Roma and Lille manager Paulo Fonseca is widely reported to succeeded him.

In addition to a new manager, Milan will also need a new striker. The Italian side have been reliant on Olivier Giroud , who scored 49 goals across the past three seasons, but have lost the Frenchman to MLS side LAFC . Replacing the former Arsenal man will be one of sporting director Antonio D'Ottavio's biggest tasks this summer.

However, the Rossoneri also need to improve defensively. They may have finished second to Inter in the league last season, but no side in the top 10 conceded more goals than them -- 49 in 38 games. Like Giroud, veteran centre-back Simon Kjaer has also left the club upon the expiry of his contract, so there is space to add bodies at the back. -- Marsden

Inter Milan

Inter's summer sees them face the daunting task of replicating a staggeringly successful domestic season under coach Simone Inzaghi in 2023-24. They won Serie A at a canter -- finishing 19 points clear of nearest rivals AC Milan -- with an eye-opening plus-67 goal difference, thanks to the division's best attack, led by Lautaro Martínez , and meanest defence.

However that on-field triumph has been followed by off-field uncertainty, after the U.S.-based investment fund Oaktree Capital Management took ownership of Inter last month when the previous owners, China's Suning, missed a loan payment. Oaktree say they're "committed to the long-term success" of the club, but it remains to be seen whether major changes will be implemented at the executive level.

Work improving the squad for next season has already begun, with director Dario Baccin confirming last month that deals are in place to sign midfielder Piotr Zielinski of Napoli and FC Porto forward Mehdi Taremi on free transfers. Inter may also look to tie down key players such as Martinez and midfielder Nicolò Barella to longer-term deals.

A new cycle is starting at Juventus this summer after the departure of manager Massimiliano Allegri. He was deemed to be too old-school and too defensive, and the club wanted and needed a change.

Thiago Motta is widely tipped to be chosen to pen this new chapter. After leading Bologna into the Champions League, facilitated by his attractive, attacking football with movement and freedom for his players, the former PSG midfielder is the complete opposite to Allegri. Whether it's Motta or someone else, Juve want to tap into the potential of starlets like Kenan Yildiz , Fabio Miretti , Samuel Iling-Junior , Carlos Alcaraz and others waiting for their chance in the Juventus Next Gen team.

This will be a younger squad in 2024-25 than it was last season, and that's before considering Adrien Rabiot , who is leaving as a free agent. Another big name, potentially Dusan Vlahovic or Federico Chiesa , could also be let go to help balance the books.

Paris Saint-Germain

This summer is all about filling the gap left by Mbappé, who will join Real Madrid. It is not so much finding a like-for-like replacement for the France captain but strengthening the squad to create a stronger team without Mbappé than it was with him. It won't be easy but manager Luis Enrique and sporting director Luis Campos are convinced it is not mission impossible.

As well as finding how to make up for the loss of Mbappé, the club is also working on extending the contract of Luis Enrique. The Spanish manager's deal expires in 12 months, and both parties are keen to add at least an extra year to it. The club is very happy with what the former Barcelona boss did in his first season in Paris, despite the disappointment of losing to Borussia Dortmund against the odds in the Champions League semifinals.

It promises to be a summer of change for Wrexham, with several players already having left the club since the end of last season. Team captain Ben Tozer, Jordan Tunnicliffe, Rob Lainton, Aaron Hayden, Callum McFadzean and Luke Young have all been released as manager Phil Parkinson attempts to strengthen his squad for a first season in League One -- English football's third tier -- since 2004-05.

The initial priority will be to overcome several rivals in the race to sign goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo. The 22-year-old enjoyed a successful loan spell at Wrexham last season, but with his contract set to expire at parent club Arsenal, Okonkwo is also the subject of interest from clubs in the Championship.

Wrexham have already missed out on the signing of Burnley 's former England striker Jay Rodríguez , with the 34-year-old choosing to sign a new contract at Turf Moor, but with League One promising to be a huge step up for Parkinson's team following successive promotions from the National League and League Two, expect the club to be busy in the transfer market this summer. -- Ogden

Liverpool Transfer DealSheet: Centre-back and wide attacker prioritised; Diaz uncertainty

Liverpool Transfer DealSheet: Centre-back and wide attacker prioritised; Diaz uncertainty

For the first time since summer 2015, Liverpool face a transfer window without Jurgen Klopp.

Arne Slot, the club’s new head coach, officially began work on Saturday and will not want to waste any time implementing his own style and system and finding out which of the club’s players fit into his vision.

It also signalled the beginning of a new-look football operations setup, with Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes both starting their new roles as owner Fenway Sports Group’s (FSG) chief executive of football and Liverpool’s sporting director respectively.

It is not expected to be an extremely busy summer at Anfield, given Slot inherits a strong foundation, but there are areas of the squad that could be improved.

What positions are Liverpool looking at this summer?

Slot was left a young, talented squad that has plenty of depth in most areas, so major surgery is not required.

Joel Matip’ s departure at the end of his contract leaves a hole at centre-back, an area Liverpool considered strengthening last summer. They still have strong options available in Virgil van Dijk , Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez alongside Jarell Quansah , the 21-year-old academy graduate who impressed last season after breaking into the first-team squad, but it is an area that needs reinforcing.

Van Dijk’ s future remains unresolved, with the captain having only one year remaining on his contract. Konate’ s form dropped off dramatically at the end of the campaign and Gomez operated more frequently as a full-back than in central defence.

Further forward, as The Athletic ’s David Ornstein reported earlier this month, Liverpool are open to bringing in a wide player . Mohamed Salah is expected to stay, while speculation has surrounded Luis Diaz , who has three years remaining on his deal. Wingers are crucial to Slot’s style of play, with the Dutch manager favouring the progressive, direct type who are strong one-on-one.

Thiago ’s departure at the end of his contract leaves Liverpool one man lighter in midfield although the Spaniard managed to be on the pitch for only seven minutes last season. The hope is Stefan Bajcetic will feature much more prominently now but Liverpool may want to re-address the No 6 position to better suit Slot’s 4-2-3-1. It may also depend on where Trent Alexander-Arnold’ s future lies positionally as to whether they need to strengthen.

How to manage Liverpool: 'Connect with the people. Be honest and authentic'

Which players’ contracts are expiring and who is expected to renew?

The free-agent exits of Matip and Thiago have been confirmed but third-choice goalkeeper Adrian ’s future remains unclear. The 37-year-old is the only other senior player set to be out of contract this summer. He has played a valuable role behind the scenes and in the dressing room but Slot and Liverpool’s leadership team may decide to move in a different direction.

Looking ahead to next season, Liverpool have contract decisions to make on three of their stars: Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk and Salah. They are all entering the final 12 months of their deals, with different dynamics in play for each. Those choices are of huge significance but there is no sense of an immediate resolution for any of them.

lfc pre season tour 2023

Who will make the key decisions this summer?

After Klopp announced his summer departure in January, FSG decided to restructure its football operations, with the returning Edwards replacing Mike Gordon as the key day-to-day decision-maker on sporting matters at Liverpool.

Hughes has been appointed as sporting director while Julian Ward, who previously worked in that role before leaving in 2023, is also back as FSG’s technical director. Benfica’s technical director Pedro Marques has arrived as FSG’s director of football development.

Slot’s appointment as head coach rather than manager highlights the shift in responsibilities with Edwards, alongside his new team and the data and recruitment departments headed by Will Spearman (research director), Dave Fallows (head of scouting and recruitment) and Barry Hunter (chief scout) taking a more prominent role on transfer business. Slot will have input in identifying and selecting targets, but Hughes will then lead negotiations in terms of making the signings.

Who are they looking at?

It has been very quiet on the transfer front this summer for a club usually keen to get business done early if possible, but that is not as surprising this time as Slot has only just started his new job — formally at least.

Background work will have been done on potential incomings but Slot is keen to assess the squad he is inheriting during pre-season, which includes a tour of the U.S. for games against Real Betis of Spain , Arsenal and Manchester United .

What he feels the group lacks will help formalise the plans for this window and those discussions will no doubt have been taking place already.

What moves have they made already?

Again, as Liverpool transition to a new leadership team and a new head coach, little has happened so far. Other than the confirmed departures of Matip and Thiago nobody has gone, and there have been no incomings.

It is unlikely Slot will make too many decisions, if any, on the squad until he has taken a closer look at his new players during pre-season. The European Championship and Copa America mean a number of the club’s senior players will join pre-season late, providing an opportunity for youngsters such as Bobby Clark , Jayden Danns and James McConnell to make their mark.

Returning loanees such as Fabio Carvalho , Tyler Morton , Owen Beck , Luke Chambers and Sepp van den Berg , who Liverpool have placed a £20million valuation on, will also have the chance to impress, too.

Who could they be looking to sell?

Of the first-team squad who could seek the exit door, second-choice goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher , who performed impressively when standing in for the injured Alisson last season, recently told  The Athletic of his desire to be a No 1 . Left-back Kostas Tsimikas is another who has fallen down the pecking order, although he signed a new long-term contract last season.

lfc pre season tour 2023

There will be interest in the club’s young players, particularly those who stepped up to the first team in the winter, but any outgoings there will almost certainly be loans rather than permanent deals.

Salah is expected to stay and one of Slot’s primary tasks is to try and get the best out of Darwin Nunez – essentially ruling them out as sale options. There is, however, a decision to be made on Diaz , who has three years left on his deal. The 27-year-old played a key role under Klopp but questions remain about his end-product.

His value will only decrease as his contract runs down, so Liverpool have the option of extending him or cashing in. Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona have both been linked with the Colombia international.

What is the budget?

Liverpool do not work to a strict budget but they try to secure the best deal possible and aim to live within their means. Transfers are assessed on a case-by-case basis and they will not pay over the odds for a player. The return of Champions League football for 2024-25 will provide a welcome boost to the finances.

However, as shown by their failed £115million move for Moises Caicedo last summer, they are prepared to spend big money on a player they feel can have a significant impact – like Van Dijk and Alisson did when they arrived in 2018’s two windows.

What is their PSR position?

Liverpool are in no danger of breaching the Premier League ’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR). In the last three seasons, they have recorded a combined pre-tax loss of £6.3million, which is way below the £105m threshold.
