My wife and I saw your show at the Venetian in Vegas. The best! Please please please come back!

Please don’t forget Holland! We can’t wait to see and join your show!!!

My husband and I went to the EW&F concert at the Rady Shell venue in San Diego, California last night and were beyond excited at the quality of the show. We are long time EW&F fans and have seen the band so many times we can’t count starting in the 80’s and continuing until the present. We went to an intimate show at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas that was hard to beat but last nights show was beyond our expectations. Yes, the Band is aging…we all are. The heartbeat and the soul of the music that we have loved since we fell for the Band was not just present but grown exponentially into a full, boastful, sound of soul. We danced, we sang, we yelled and experienced this to the fullest. What a night and what a great sound! We fell in love again – filled to the brim with the days of our youth and settled totally with the ages of our soul. What a grand experience. Love you Earth, Wind & Fire. You have made our world brighter!

W.O.W. Sold out performance in the, “Cheezie State of Wisconsin”, during the huge Summerfest bash! Can’t wait to get my grove on to the old classic song, “September”!

Will the tour hit Amsterdam, The Netherlands?

Australia please please please

Attended concert in Chicago on August 5th! Both Lionel and EWF were amazing. So many songs, one in particular ” The Way of the World” sparked memories of me playing as a kid, in the 70’s on the SS of Chicago, I cried as I remembered my Dad and Grandma! Thank you Elements!

OMG!!!! These are two of my favorite performers! Just coming from the show in WASH DC Excellent show !!!

Hallo there, As both EW&F and Lionel Richie are my favorites I hope their tour will also come to Europe (Holland)????. Kind regards Jillis Zevenbergen (Holland)

Wife and myself are EXCITED to see Earth Wind and Fire with Lionel Richie….we are excited to celebrate my wife Claudia’s 55th birthday at the concert.

This by far was the best concert I have ever been to. Earth, wind and fire has been around since I was little, and I grew up with them and their music. From the moment they came out on stage to the moment they did their last song, I did not sit down one time!! I sang every song dance to every song, and they are the ultimate elements. I would see them 1 million times over.

Do You ever come to Belgium again?

Music and concerts, subscriber only, music and concerts | concert review: earth, wind & fire outshine lionel richie at the x.

Lionel Richie holds the microphone in one hand and points with the other on stage

Like Richie’s first group the Commodores, EWF were often classified as a funk band, but they’ve always been so much more, dabbling in soul, disco, rock, jazz and Latin jazz. And despite the 2016 death of band founder/leader Maurice White, the three core members — Verdine White (bass, vocals), Philip Bailey (vocals, percussion) and Ralph Johnson (vocals, percussion) — have kept the group going strong. In terms of infectious energy and sheer joy, they easily bested Richie (more on him in a bit).

With 11 musicians on stage, EWF conjured a wall of sound that gave their numerous hits true power. The group’s cover of the Beatles’ “Got to Get You Into My Life” (which Paul McCartney wrote as an ode to both Motown and weed), “Fantasy,” “That’s the Way of the World,” “Boogie Wonderland,” “Let’s Groove” and the inevitable “September” sounded as bright, vibrant and exciting as ever.

Even EWF’s slower songs packed a punch, like “Keep Your Head to the Sky,” which they began playing on a dark stage, with members of the audience using their mobile phone flashlights to provide a sky of “stars.”

Really, the only complaint is that at a mere 75 minutes, their set felt a bit rushed. More Earth, Wind & Fire is a good thing.

As far as Richie goes, he’s clearly a talented entertainer and songwriter. In the first half of the ’80s, he was one of MTV’s biggest stars with a string of smashes that include “Truly,” “All Night Long (All Night),” “Hello,” “Stuck on You,” “Dancing on the Ceiling” and his Diana Ross duet “Endless Love.” But he took a break from music to care for his ailing father, who died in 1990. Richie has said that sent him into a deep depression that he couldn’t shake until the birth of his son Miles four years later.

Richie has never returned to that level of success, but he’s remained a favorite with audiences — oddly enough, he’s absolutely adored in the Arab world — both for his concerts and his other endeavors like serving as an “American Idol” judge.

Since 2016, Richie has played a series of Las Vegas residencies, and it’s quite clear he’s picked up some of the cheesier, old-school Sin City vibes. Much like his 2019 concert at the Minnesota State Fair Grandstand, Friday’s show tended to drag at times as Richie over indulged in canned stage banter between numbers. He also let the crowd cover for him when he couldn’t hit the notes, which was often.

Still, Richie comes across as an amiable guy and he made sure to play every one of those aforementioned hits along with a bunch more.

lionel richie ewf tour 2023

StarTribune

Review: lionel richie could have used a little earth, wind & fire in schmaltzy st. paul performance.

All night long, we kept waiting and waiting. Waiting for Lionel Richie to collaborate with fellow Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Earth, Wind & Fire. Just like EWF did with Chicago on their 2016 co-headline tour.

It never happened Friday at Xcel Energy Center. It was opening night of the Sing a Song All Night Long Tour. Maybe Richie and EWF hadn't had time to rehearse together. That's too bad because the EWF/Chicago encore, in which they were onstage together and alternated songs, was as exciting as an excellent Super Bowl halftime show.

Friday's concert was nostalgic fun punctuated with emotional ballads, but just not as special as it could have been. Richie and EWF, who both had hits in the 1970s and blew up in the '80s, are a good fit. To collaborate, Richie certainly could have welcomed the EWF horns on the encore of "All Night Long (All Night)," which in St. Paul featured a lone saxophone instead of a full-blown mariachi-like horn section a la the 1983 recording. Maybe these two still-vibrant oldies acts — who have been plotting to tour together for "200 years," according to the excitable Richie — can squeeze in a little joint rehearsal as the tour rolls on.

Richie's 95-minute performance was certainly artfully orchestrated, especially the staging and visuals. The veteran pop star-turned-"American Idol" judge had a striking video display, featuring six cubes over the stage and a giant backdrop on which lyrics, clouds, psychedelia and live images of the singer were projected amid film strips and a checkerboard. Mix in the de rigueur lasers, flame-throwers and stage-fog blasters, and the entertainment quotient was praiseworthy.

Backed by a five-man band, Richie opened the concert by emerging from underneath a runway to deliver, of all things, the 1983 quiet storm hit, "Hello." That might seem on the nose — when you have a ballad-heavy repertoire, why not start with a ballad instead of a banger?

The crowd of 13,000 swooned to the piano man's many romantic serenades, including "Three Times a Lady," "Still," "Just to be Close to You," "Truly" (on which he couldn't hit his high notes) and "Endless Love," during which he asked women in the crowd to sing the part that Diana Ross did on the 1981 hit recording. When it comes to schmaltz, Richie rivals Cecil's Deli, in business in St. Paul since 1949 (the year Richie was born).

Except the chatty, skillful entertainer mixes hammy with cheesy. All night long, he kept poking fun at how long he's been around (he started performing in 1968 with a bunch of Alabama college buddies in the Commodores) and how his fans (and himself) used to dance back in the day.

Truth be told, Richie moved to the rhythm Friday but didn't exactly dance all night long — or much at all. He sashayed down the runway at times but relied on his guitarist, bassist and saxophonist — none of whom was introduced — to bring the physical energy.

At least Richie brought the musical energy at times, most notably with the Commodores' funky "Brick House" (which mixed in some of the Ohio Players' "Fire"), "Dancing on the Ceiling" (which sounded more popish than usual but eventually rocked with a taste of Van Halen's "Jump") and the festive finale "All Night Long."

Between all the schmaltz and shtick, Richie got serious for a few minutes and gave an impassioned speech about how during the pandemic he studied how people treat each other. In conclusion, he said fans didn't come to the concert as a political party or as a color. "We came as the human race," he said. He then launched into "We Are the World," a sincere if schmaltzy sing-along he wrote in 1985 with Michael Jackson.

As for Earth, Wind & Fire, even though the group has been on tour all summer, it took the 12-man band half of their opening 80-minute set to build momentum. Too many tunes were truncated until EWF remembered that their songs have bridges, like the sax solo in "After the Love Is Gone" and the guitar segment in "That's the Way of the World," two highlights. The group turned it out for "Fantasy," "September," "Boogie Wonderland" and "Let's Groove." While EWF's low-energy ensemble dance steps didn't exactly excite the crowd, 72-year-old Philip Bailey's voice certainly did, especially his goosebumps-inducing falsetto.
