What is the Southwest Low Fare Calendar?

How does the southwest low fare calendar work, other tips to book cheap southwest flights, final thoughts on the low fare calendar from southwest.

If you’re a Southwest Airlines frequent flyer and want to get even more value from your Rapid Rewards points, you’ve come to the right place.

Read on as we delve into the airline’s Low Fare Calendar and share some additional Southwest booking tips to help you maximize savings.

The Southwest Low Fare Calendar provides a way to look at the lowest fare available on Southwest for any given month. You can search for one way, roundtrip or multi-city trips and view the results in dollars or Rapid Rewards points.

To find Southwest’s Low Fare Calendar, head to the airline's desktop website . (Though Southwest has a user-friendly mobile app that’s helpful for tracking flights, changing your bookings, and checking in, you can only search for the lowest fares in a calendar view on the airline's website.)

low fare travel calendar

Southwest uses a fare-based award system, which means that the number of points a flight will cost is based on the cash price of the ticket instead of a fixed award chart. If your dates are flexible, you can book the same trip for fewer Rapid Rewards points depending on when you travel. That’s where the airline’s Low Fare Calendar comes in.

This calendar tool helps you compare prices for different days for an entire month, and you can see multiple months at once. It’s easy to find the price difference if you're considering travel on a different day than you had originally planned.

low fare travel calendar

For the most part, prices are constant at 11,820 points each way. However, some days, like June 30, July 21 and 30, are more expensive than others. But if you are flexible, you could save some points.

You can see the cost to book in points up to six months (or 180 days) in advance, which is the ideal time to book according to a 2021 NerdWallet airline booking analysis .

For travel with fixed dates, this calendar view will show you the cheapest award travel available to you on your specific travel dates. If you have some flexibility, this tool is clutch for shopping even more smartly for the cheapest Southwest flights.

Book flights through Chase's travel portal rather than transferring points

Southwest Airlines is a 1:1 transfer partner of Chase Ultimate Rewards® , but it doesn’t always make sense to transfer your Chase points to Southwest.

For instance, if you’re a Chase Sapphire Reserve® cardholder, you probably won’t want to transfer points from Chase. That’s because that card has a value of 1.5 cents per point when you book travel through Chase's travel portal . NerdWallet values Southwest Rapid Rewards points at 1.5 cents each, so you won't lose value if you transfer your points to Southwest, but you will lose the opportunity to earn Rapid Rewards points on your flight.

When you book a flight through Chase's travel portal, Chase pays the airline for your ticket. In the eyes of the airline, it’s a paid revenue ticket instead of a points redemption. That means you’ll earn Rapid Rewards points on flight segments booked through Chase. If you have Southwest status like A-List or A-List Preferred , that status will still be recognized if you book with your Chase Ultimate Rewards® points.

If you don’t have the Chase Sapphire Reserve® or you need some Southwest points to top up your account for a specific booking, then transferring points from Chase to Southwest is a great option.

Use the Low Fare Calendar to rebook your Southwest flight when fares drop

Now that you've mastered the Low Fare Calendar, you can step up your booking game even more.

Southwest has one of the most generous cancellation and change policies of any airline. There’s no fee to cancel or to change your ticket as long as you do so 10 minutes in advance of your flight.

While there’s no fee to change your ticket, you will have to pay the difference in fare. If the flight you’re trying to change to costs more than the price you paid, you’ll pay the difference.

If the price of the flight you want to change to is cheaper, then you’ll be credited back the difference.

With this generous change policy, you can even rebook the same flight you already have paid for and get the difference credited to you. Just find your flight on the website and select "change flight." If the price has dropped from what you originally paid, just "change" the flight and you’ll get the difference back.

If you paid in points, you’ll get refunded in points. If you paid a nonrefundable Wanna Get Away fare, you’ll get a credit in the form of a Travel Fund. Travel Funds are easy to view when you’re logged into your Southwest Rapid Rewards account, and you can apply them to the cost of future flights.

Use the Southwest Companion Pass to fly someone for next to nothing

What some consider to be the "holy grail" of travel, the Southwest Companion Pass can help Southwest flyers save some serious cash. It’s essentially a "buy one, get one free" coupon that enables you to fly a companion of your choice for nearly free whenever you fly. Just pay the taxes and fees (often only $5.60 each way for domestic flights) and your companion is all set.

The pass is valid for the remainder of the calendar year in which it’s earned, plus the entire next calendar year. If you earn the pass early in the year, you can get almost two full years of nearly free flights for your companion. Plus, you can change your companion up to three times each calendar year. So if you want to take a trip with your spouse, they can be your companion for a flight; later if you want to take another trip with your friend, you can change your companion.

Be sure to think about timing if you change companions. You cannot have two flights booked at the same time with different companions. This means you have to complete one trip, change your companion, wait for it to process, then book your next trip.

Companion Passes work when you book your trip with Rapid Rewards points, too — you don’t have to pay for your ticket in cash. You could use the Low Fare Calendar to find a cheap round-trip, book with Rapid Reward points and add your companion for a low-cost getaway.

Find sweet spots using the Southwest Low Fare Calendar

You can also take advantage of the Southwest Low Fare Calendar to find sweet spots for your next trip. For example, Southwest allows you to island hop in Hawaii for less than 5,000 points per flight. Southwest flies to Hawaii nonstop from four California cities: Oakland, San Jose, Sacramento and San Diego.

Southwest services Kauai, Oahu, Maui, and Kona and Hilo on Hawaii.

Not only can you get to Hawaii using Southwest Rapid Rewards , but you can often do so cheaply. It’s not uncommon to find one-way tickets for less than 10,000 Rapid Rewards points from California to Hawaii.

Once you’ve reached Hawaii, it’s also easy to hop around to different islands. Inter-island flights can be found for less than 5,000 points each way. That’s rock-bottom pricing that even beats Hawaiian Airlines — you’ll pay at least 7,500 Hawaiian miles to fly around Hawaii. You could use 6,000 JetBlue TrueBlue points for a one-way flight on Hawaiian Airlines between islands, but Southwest is still the lowest points option. Aloha!

» Learn more: How to island hop in Hawaii

Earn thousands of Rapid Rewards points on hotel stays

Thanks to Southwest’s partnerships with Booking.com and RocketMiles, you can earn a substantial amount of Rapid Rewards points on your hotel bookings.

Visit the Southwest hotels link on their site and search for hotels. You’ll see the prices and the amount of Rapid Rewards points that you’ll earn, so it’s easy to compare your options. Watch for periodic promotions where you’ll earn more points than usual when you book your hotel.

While you’ll earn a lot of Rapid Rewards points on these bookings, you won’t always find the best rates on these partner sites. Make sure to do some price comparison research and weigh your options.

If you’re looking to travel within the U.S. and to Hawaii, or to popular locations in Mexico and the Caribbean, chances are that Southwest flies there. You can use your Rapid Rewards points to book your trip, and even if your plans change, you’ll get your money or credit back.

Make sure you’re looking at the Low Fare Calendar and checking flights you've already booked to lock in the lowest fares. If you need to book a flight and have the Chase Sapphire Reserve® , don’t transfer points to Southwest. Instead, book through Chase's travel portal to also earn Rapid Rewards points on that ticket.

How to find cheap flights, what is the best day to buy a plane ticket.

This just in! Airfares offered on Thursdays tend to be the cheapest, according to flight demand on Travelocity in 2021. Tuesday and Wednesday prices are also good, but you may want to prepare your budget if booking during the weekend, as data shows that is when prices are generally at their highest.

What are the cheapest days to fly?

Frequent travelers may already know this, but earlier in the week can be the cheapest time to fly. In 2021, flights departing on a Monday were generally the cheapest of the week, whereas you may pay a premium for weekend flights when demand is usually high. On average, tickets were most expensive for Saturday departures, so if you need to fly out on a weekend, you might look for deals ahead of time.

How far in advance can you book a flight?

Trying to figure out how early you should book your flight? It’s possible to start comparing international airfares on Travelocity up to 12 months in advance. However, it does depend on the carrier as not all airlines release their prices that far out. According to our 2021 flight demand trends, last minute planners can still bag a bargain with some of the cheapest fares appearing 0-2 weeks prior to their travel dates.

*According to flight demand on Travelocity.com from January to December 2021. Savings are subject to change based on departure location, date and destination.

Low Fare Tips

Seven tips for finding the LFP (lowest fare possible)

It pays to plan ahead. The closer you are to your traveling day the more you pay. Why? Because a while back some smart guys and gals at an airline figured out that business travelers tend to schedule meetings at the last minute and have the least flexibility. So while the airlines stick it to the business folk, a well-organized vacationer can take advantage. To find the best fares for you, search for your trip on KAYAK and complete your booking 21 days or more in advance; for next best try for 14 or more. You still here? What are you waiting for?

SMTWTFS? The flexibility to travel on another day can result in dramatically lower fares. So next time you search on KAYAK, select the flexible dates option. You'll probably find that flying Saturday is cheaper (though not so much for international). Likewise, traveling mid-week (Tuesday or Wednesday) is usually cheaper than Monday or Thursday/Friday: consultants love to travel on Monday mornings and fly back Thursday (of course, they still bill you for Friday but that's another story).

All of life is timing. The key to getting the lowest fare is to fly when others are not. The "dead times" will vary by route (early morning and late night are good for leisure routes, mid-day is usually best for business routes). Select the "Anytime" option and use our filtering tools to focus your way to a cheaper fare.

Avoid peak travel seasons. See a theme here? Don't travel when everyone else is. Go to Disneyland or Las Vegas after Thanksgiving and before Christmas. Not only will the flights be cheaper but the lines shorter, too. Or fly on Christmas day when everyone is there already (and the flight attendants are extra nice).

Thank you for choosing. When low cost carriers like JetBlue or Easyjet simplified their pricing structure to offer lower prices more often, it wasn't long before everyone was doing it. But not every airline's price structure works in the same way. That's why we compare so many airlines across hundreds of travel sites to get you the best price. You could say we have a flair for finding the cheapest fare (but maybe not for poetry).

Location, location, location. Speaking of low cost carriers, many of them fly into alternative airports (like Burbank or Long Beach instead of LAX or Stansted instead of London Heathrow) and what they save in airport fees they pass onto you. You may also appreciate the added benefit of less traffic, cheaper rental cars and fewer people at the airport bars, too. Whenever you search with KAYAK, we can automatically show you rates from nearby airports.

Easily the most important... search KAYAK before you book.

Bucket list travel on a budget: Expert tips for airfare, loyalty programs, credit card perks and more

VIDEO: Tips for affordable travel

Many travelers have their sights set on summer getaways , but with everything from baggage fees to fuel costs impacting the price of a ticket, "Good Morning America" is asking travel experts to share tips for booking bucket list destinations on a budget and finding savings along the way.

Travel expert Nicky Kelvin, senior director of content for The Points Guy, offered his tips for affordable travel techniques.

low fare travel calendar

Where to find the best flight deals

low fare travel calendar

Kelvin encourages travelers to utilize Google Flights and other free price-tracking tools to compare fare prices and snag the best deal.

He also suggests using both the calendar and map features within Google Flights to see which airports, dates and destinations how the lowest fare.

From the Google Flights homepage on a computer, click "explore destinations" and select a departure city without adding a destination. Then zoom out on the map to see the best prices for destinations all over the world.

Get the most out of free travel loyalty programs

Travelers should be earning points for anything and everything that they are buying or booking from airline and hotels to car rentals, Kelvin said.

In addition to the points that can can help travelers earn free flights and hotel stays, Kelvin said to look for extra perks just for joining.

Hyatt rewards, for example, offers all guests free breakfast.

For Thrifty Car Rental and Dollar Car Rental, he said you can add your spouse or domestic partner as an additional driver for free.

Loyalty programs are great for airlines too. JetBlue, for example, allows enrolled customers -- even if they don't have enough points for a flight -- to use points for discounts. Plus, with any airline, as you accumulate points to earn status, you can get free seating upgrades.

Travel credit cards with cash back perks

Along with earning points, travel credit cards give you protection for your trip like insurance to help with lost or damaged baggage and trip cancellation protection

As for credit cards, The Points Guy team suggests the Capital One Venture Rewards credit card as an all-around pick -- you get 75,000 miles after meeting your minimum spend in the first three months. Which Kelvin said is a value of over $1,300.

If you're looking to earn the most miles, he said look to the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card.

"You'll earn the most points on all your purchases with this one," he said.

Finally, if you want a credit card with no fee, Kelvin suggested the Bilt Mastercard, which he said is particularly great for renters because you can earn points on what's likely someone's biggest expense.

Save money on international phone plans for summer trips

If someone's trip is taking them out of the country, using a cell phone internationally can cost $10 to 15 per day. For a family of four, that's more than $400 for a week.

If your phones support eSIM, Kelvin suggested purchasing a data plan for your destination through an app such as Airalo, Truphone or GigSky.

For example, one of Airalo's global SIM plans costs $9 for one week, which could save a family close to $350 dollars, depending on their existing international coverage.

This Low-cost Airline Has $25 Off Flights Until Tomorrow — Here's the Promo Code

And there are no blackout dates.

low fare travel calendar

Joe Scarnici/Getty Images for Avelo Air

It’s not too late to save on e summer travel, as Avelo Airlines is giving fliers an easy way to save $25 off their next round-trip booking through June.

The low-cost airline’s latest sale, which is valid until Tuesday, April 23, at 11:59 p.m. PT, is eligible for all Avelo flights between May 1 and June 30. Travelers must use promo code “JUMP25” under the “Have a promo code?” section on Avelo’s website or its app to snag the $25 discount.

With no blackout dates to note, this new promotion is an excellent way for a group of friends or family to save on airfare, as this discount applies once per passenger. However, the savings will only apply to the base fare of a round-trip ticket, which excludes any government taxes and fees.

Avelo brands itself as “America’s most convenient airline,” with its network focused on serving smaller airports to popular destinations nationwide, including Puerto Rico. Since the airline started flying in 2021, Avelo has even brought back service to airports like Salem and Central Florida , both of which have not seen commercial service in over a decade.

Travel + Leisure tested the promo code on a popular seasonal route between Hollywood Burbank Airport outside of Los Angeles and Colorado Springs, which is returning in a few weeks for the summer season. This round-trip flight normally costs $148 in the middle of June, but the final cost at checkout is just $122 per person with the promo code.

Avelo operates on a low-cost model, so travelers will be able to choose their seat assignment or add any carry-on and checked bags for an additional cost. There’s no extra cost to change or cancel a flight for a future trip credit, but any modifications made by Avelo’s customer service team will come with a $25 charge per passenger.

Are you planning a trip and want to buy cheap tickets? Now it's so easy! Choose your destination in our Low Fare Calendar and book tickets for your journey at the lowest price!

How the Low Fare Calendar works?

Our Low Fare Calendar shows you the prices for several dozen days at once . That makes a possibility to quickly and seamlessly check ticket prices for a route you're interested in. Low Fare Calendar allows you to enter the booking process directly after finding the best dates, so you can book your tickets at once!

If you want to learn more about how the Low Fare Calendar works, check the info below.

Ticket prices

The Low Fare Calendar indicates the lowest prices for the connection of your choice from our flight network.

Remember that data in the Low Fare Calendar is updated once per day, so displayed prices cannot be available in the booking process at the time of your search.

Travel dates

Depending on a route, range of travel dates with prices in Low Fare Calendar is 180 or 270 days, and max length of stay at your destination is 14 or 30 days.

Importantly, the Low Fare Calendar shows the cost of a ticket for the selected flight for each day on which we offer the connection, and the lowest price in a given month is highlighted in green color .

Thus, our Low Fare Calendar will help you find the best solution, whether you primarily want the lowest price regardless of the date and day of the week , or you are looking, for example, for the lowest price for a weekend trip .

Cabin class

Keep in mind that our Low Fare Calendar indicates the cheapest tickets for selected routes, therefore the prices shown are for economy class travel  with a carry-on baggage only.

Importantly, the Low Fare Calendar shows the price of travel for one adult passenger . After selecting the flight dates you are interested in, you will be able to choose the number and age of passengers. You will find out the final prices for your trip when you enter the booking process.

Choose the route and type of your trip

If you want to check the lowest price for a selected connection in the Low Fare Calendar , you just need to select the type of your journey - one-way or round-trip flight, and then specify the origin and destination .

If you choose a round-trip, our Low Fare Calendar will show you separately the prices of flights to your destination, and the prices of return flights. Therefore, in order to see the prices of the entire trip, first select the date of departure - only then you will be able to specify the day of the return flight.

It's much more simple than a traditional flight search!

Use our Low Fare Calendar and see how easy it is to find the cheapest flights with convenient travel dates for you!

Explore our fantastic destinations!

Caribbean deal alert: Fly to Puerto Rico for as low as $282 round-trip

S ummer is fast approaching, but savvy travelers know to think a season or two ahead when planning their vacations. That's why we're putting a new fare sale to Puerto Rico on your radar. Winter flights to the popular island are available now at significant discounts.

You can book flights to the capital city of San Juan or the northwestern surfing town of Aguadilla for less than $300 round-trip. The travel window is from May to November 2024 and early 2025 — a period when much of the U.S. will be longing for warm weather. The deal's departure cities include Charlotte, Denver and Seattle.

Know that this deal involves flights with layovers and is for basic economy tickets. Basic economy tickets on American Airlines and Delta Air Lines come with free carry-on bags, which makes this sale very attractive to light packers. For JetBlue and United Airlines flights, only one smaller item is generally permitted on board, so expect to pay $35 to $45 each way if you want to check luggage.

Deal basics

Airlines : American, Delta, JetBlue and United

Routes : Flights from Charlotte, Denver and Seattle to Aguadilla and San Juan

How to book : Browse Google Flights , then book directly with the airline

Travel dates : May through November 2024; between January and March 2025

This deal was originally sent out by Going . Sign up for Going to get up to 90% off select flights via its Premium membership , which users can try for free for 14 days and then $69 per year. You can also upgrade to the Elite tier for $199 per year to access all the Premium deals, plus premium economy, business-class and first-class alerts.

Sample flights

The big discounts to Aguadilla are limited to flights out of Charlotte, but we found a few good itineraries in the fall. For example, this October round-trip United ticket from Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) to Aguadilla's Rafael Hernández Airport (BQN) costs just $323. Remember, United basic economy tickets do not provide a free carry-on bag.

You can find the same price for this route in February when the weather is perfect for surfing at Aguadilla's famed Crash Boat beach. Again, it's a United ticket, so you'll have to pay for a bag.

We found round-trip tickets from Seattle to San Juan in the fall for less than $300. Some have two stops each way, but there were quite a few options with much more reasonable travel schedules. For example, this late October United itinerary from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) to San Juan's Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) is only $282; it has just one layover each way.

American has good availability from Seattle to San Juan at the same price in January. That's an even bigger savings when you consider that you get a free carry-on bag.

As for JetBlue, the carrier has flights from Denver to Puerto Rico for just $352 round-trip. You can fly from Denver International Airport (DEN) to SJU in October and November at that price.

According to Google Flights data, that's a significant discount from normal prices. But remember, JetBlue's Blue Basic fares don't allow for a free carry-on bag, so you'll need to budget a little more for a checked bag.

We'll end where we started: in the Carolinas. We didn't see many great deals from Charlotte to San Juan in the fall and winter, but we did spot a few bargains at the start of summer. This June JetBlue itinerary out of Charlotte is only $326 round-trip.

Maximize your purchase

When you book this deal or any flights, be sure to use a credit card that earns bonus points on airfare purchases, such as:

  • Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card : 2 points per dollar spent on travel
  • American Express® Gold Card : 3 points per dollar spent on airfare when booked directly with the airline or through amextravel.com
  • The Platinum Card® from American Express : 5 points per dollar spent on airfare when booked directly with the airline or through American Express Travel (on up to $500,000 of these purchases per calendar year, then 1 point per dollar)
  • Citi Premier® Card (see rates and fees ): 3 points per dollar spent on airfare
  • Chase Sapphire Reserve® : 3 points per dollar spent on travel

Bottom line

We always recommend having maximum travel flexibility to take advantage of sale fares, so make sure you have several options when you search for this deal. If you're patient and have good timing, you can find bargains within the fairly wide travel window.
