Best time to visit.

With such a unique ecosystem and environment, going on holiday to Madagascar at different times of the year offers a variety of challenges and benefits. September to November is considered one of the best times to visit, as these months sit right in between the cool, dry winter and the hot, rainy season. This time is also considered the best time to view birdlife.

July to August offers cooler temperatures and the best chances for whale watching on the coast.

January to March is cyclone season, but this is also the best time to see flowering orchids.

Culture and customs

Madagascar is a relatively young nation with inhabitants only traced back 1,300 years. Throughout its history, multiple nations and peoples have influenced the culture and customs of modern-day Madagascar. While some of this history can only be speculated, it's known that much of it has come from Indonesian origins, alongside neighboring African and Arab cultures.

The official languages of Madagascar are Malagasy and French. French is still widely spoken across the country due to the nation being a former French colony.

Today, about 90% of the population identifies as Malagasy, further split into 20 ethnic groups. The largest of these groups is known as the Merina, who lived on the plateau. The country's religious practices are split between Christian and the traditional beliefs of the Malagasy people.

Geography and environment

This iconic island nation sitting off the coast of East Africa in the Indian Ocean, is home to one of the most precious and unique natural environments in the world. Its isolated location means that a distinct variety of animal and plant species have been able to thrive without outside genetic influences.

Possessing extinct volcanoes, hidden waterfalls, cool highlands, grassy plains, pristine beaches, and islands, Madagascar was once completely covered in forest - but due to high levels of deforestation, most forest cover has been lost. Some tracts of rainforest do endure today, but it's estimated that the current level of forest cover is only 1-2 percent of what it once was. Despite this loss, hundreds of species of plants and trees thrive all over the island, from huge, ancient baobab trees to thorny cacti and resplendent ferns.

Eating and drinking

Malagasy cuisine is highlighted by its fresh and tasty homegrown exotic produce alongside its unique local livestock, such as the zebu (a species of cow), and a variety of seafood. Many cultures across the world have contributed to the Malagasy cuisine of today including French, Indonesian, Indian, and nearby African nations.

Food to try in Madagascar

This national dish is made of cubed zebu meat (a local type of cow) and served with a light broth, tomato sauce, and rice. With all the bright colors, it resembles the Malagasy flag.

2. Henakisoa sy Ravitoto

This dish is made up of braised pork and pounded cassava leaves with an assortment of spices.

3. Malagasy chocolate

Because of the unique environment it's created in, Madagascan chocolate has a unique fruity, citrusy, and even forest flavor profile.

4.Henakisoa sy Amalona

One of the seven royal dishes, this traditional meal is made of pork and eel. While an unusual duo to most, this dish is a delicacy in Madagascar.

5.Tsaramaso Malagasy

A slow-cooked white bean and tomato dish cooked with zebu or pork as a stew.

Madagascar is popular around the world for its specialty produce items such as coffee, chocolate, and vanilla, but there are many other unique souvenirs to find while on the Great Red Island.

Things to buy in Madagascar

Vanilla is arguably one of the most famous exports to come out of Madagascar. Shop around for vanilla beans, paste, essence, and more.

Is tipping customary in Madagascar?

Tipping isn’t mandatory, but a little generosity will be received positively especially when considering the low wages that most service workers are typically paid. Setting aside a small amount for porters, guides and drivers is wise, as is leaving spare change or rounding up the bill at restaurants.

What is the internet access like in Madagascar?

Cyber cafes are found in some of the larger cities like Antsirabe, Fianarantsoa and Antananarivo. Smaller towns and remote areas will have far less access, so prepare to disconnect when traveling out of urban centers.

Can I use my cell phone while in Madagascar?

Cell phone coverage is generally good in Madagascar's large cities and towns, but less so in rural areas and on remote islands. Ensure you have global roaming activated before leaving home if you wish to use your phone.

What are the toilets like in Madagascar?

Squat/pit toilets are the standard in Madagascar except for western-style flushable toilets that are sometimes available in large hotels and other modern buildings. Carry your own supply of soap and toilet paper, as this is rarely provided.

Can I drink the water in Madagascar?

Drinking tap water isn't recommended in Madagascar. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water. Ask your leader where filtered water can be found, some hotels we stay in may have drinking water available. It's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit and vegetables before eating.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Madagascar?

Major credit cards like Visa are usually accepted by large hotels and western-style restaurants in the capital but not by smaller vendors. Ensure you have adequate cash to cover purchases not able to be made on credit.

What is ATM access like in Madagascar?

ATMs that accept foreign cards can be found in large cities and the airport, although they're often unreliable or out of service. Be sure to carry a back-up method of payment in case ATM access becomes difficult.

Madagascar safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

Discretion is advised for LGBTQIA+ travellers in Madagascar. While same-sex relationships are legal, public attitudes in Madagascar are not widely accepting of LGBTQIA+ people. The age of consent for same-sex relations is 21. Same-sex marriage is not recognised. It is advised to be discreet and avoid public displays of affection.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex or ILGA before you travel.

If you are travelling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travellers who do not wish to share a room.

Understanding Madagascar

Madagascar is sometimes referred to as the “eighth continent” because of its unique biodiversity and geographical isolation. The island has been isolated from other land masses for millions of years, allowing evolution to unfold in a distinctly unique style. It was once part of the Gondwana supercontinent, nestled between what we now know as Mozambique and India.

Culturally, Madagascar is a veritable melting pot. The first people arrived here between 350 BCE and 550 CE from Borneo. Bantu migrants crossing the Mozambique Channel followed a few centuries later. Add to this group various Arab, Indian, and Chinese settlements, and you will understand the Malagasy culture. United under the British monarch in the 19th century, only to become a French colony in 1896, Madagascar eventually gained its independence in 1960.

The Unique Flora & Fauna of Madagascar

An astonishing number of the species in Madagascar are endemic to the island. Endemic plants and animals are native species that only grow in one location in the world.

  • 89% of the 11,000 identified flora species are endemic (unless exported or cultivated abroad)
  • 92% of its 219 terrestrial mammals are endemic (like lemurs, tenrecs, and fossa)
  • 95% of Madagascar’s 406 reptile species are endemic
  • 90% of the 238 amphibian species are endemic
  • 117 of the 280 bird species are endemic (giving Madagascar the highest percentage of endemic birds in the world)
  • 97% of the freshwater fish species are endemic
  • Possibly up to 99% of the nearly 200,000 arthropod species are found nowhere else on the planet

On August 2nd, we’ll fly 2 hours to Fort Dauphin on the far southeast coast. From there we will head inland and drive 3-4 hours to our home base at the Berenty Private Reserve Lodge with its basic but comfortable accommodations.

The reserve is home to six species of Lemur, including the iconic ring-tailed lemur and Verreaux’s “dancing” sifaka, as well as 103 bird species. It has the largest population of fruit bats in Madagascar. The reserve contains a portion of Madagascar’s spiny forest, as well as a gallery forest dominated by tamarind and acacia. Six species of Baobob are endemic to Madagascar, and Berenty is home to the Adansonia za species.

Berenty was developed as a private reserve in 1936 and has been some to important scientific research in the decades. Renowned primatologist Alison Jolly started studying lemur behavior at Berenty in 1963, with a special eye on the ring-tailed lemur population.

We’ll enjoy daily nature walks and even some night walks to discover the wealth of flora and fauna in southern Madagascar. On the 5th we’ll return to Fort Dauphin (La Croix du Sud hotel) and spend the night there, taking a flight back to Antananarivo the next morning.

Palmarium, Madagascar

Toamasina airport.

madagascar tour 2024

On August 6th, we’ll fly back to Antananarivo and then take a 50-minute flight from Tana to Toamasina (also called Tamatave). We’ll spend the night in Toamasina in preparation for the next chapter of our journey!

On the morning of the 6th, we’ll board a small motorboat that will take us through the Pangalanes Canal. The Pangalanes Canal is a series of natural rivers, waterways, and human-made lakes that extend for 400 miles down the east coast of Madagascar. It’s a beautiful journey and it will make our 3-hour boat ride go by in a flash! (Please note that the boat ride is smooth since we’re in small, protected waterways, on a motor boat.)

Palmarium Reserve will be our home for the next three nights, accessible only by boat–it’s “off the beaten path” by any measure! Our lodge is set in a littoral forest on a private reserve on the shore of Lake Ampitabe. It is home to 7 species of diurnal lemurs and 4 nocturnal, as well as chameleons, frogs, geckos, tenrecs, and more.

Most of the lemurs at Palmarium are not native to this area, but due to Madagascar’s rampant deforestation, they are being protected on this reserve’s land.  Some of the lemurs are habituated to human presence and very inquisitive, making Palmarium ideal for photographers. Expert guides will lead us around the reserve, in hopes to see (and hear!) the largest lemur of all, the Indri. You’ll not soon forget the haunting, forest-piercing call of an Indri!

Evening time holds even more excitement, as we will take a short boat ride in the canal (~20 minutes) to Aye-Aye Island, a private reserve dedicated to protecting the largest nocturnal primates of the same name. Aye-Ayes play an unfortunate role in some Malagasy superstitions and have been killed in astonishing numbers, so it is truly a rare opportunity to lay eyes on an Aye-Aye in person. The diet of the Aye-Ayes on this island is supplemented; because they are fed coconuts at night, a sighting is a sure thing (although not any less magical).

Our lodge is simple but restful and comfortable, and you’re sure to have some lemurs frolicking on your bungalow’s porch (or roof!)  The black-and-white ruffed lemurs will almost certainly try to visit you during meal times, as well–we’ve found them to be the funniest and “naughtiest” of all the lemurs!

On August 10th, we’ll board another boat and head south in Pangalanes Canal for ~75 minutes to meet our ride to Andasibe-Mantadia National Park.

Analamazaotra Special Reserve

August 10–14.

Hotel: Manjanaro Lodge & Spa

  • UNESCO World Heritage rainforest
  • Diademed sifaka
  • Grey bamboo lemur
  • Sportive lemurs
  • Lowland streaked tenrec
  • Leaf-tailed gecko
  • Parson’s chameleon

Manjarano Lodge, Andasibe

madagascar tour 2024

Once we land on the shores of Lake Rasoabe, we’ll take a 3-4 hour drive to Andasibe and our next home base, Manjanaro Lodge & Spa.

Andasibe-Mantadia is actually two distinct parks, Analamazaotra National Park and Mantadia, and its lush rainforests are a UNESCO World Heritage site. Eleven species of lemurs make their home here, including the Indri and the Diademed Sifaka, both critically endangered. This area is truly one of the best primate-watching sites in the world, and it is the single best spot in the country for seeing the Indri.

More than 100 bird species have been identified in the park and over 20 species of amphibian. The park is also home to the endemic palm tree Ravenea louvelii , found nowhere else in Madagascar. We’ll enjoy both day hikes and night walks in this gorgeous, biodiverse park and see what we can discover!

Our hotel is also a short walk from Lemur Island which is always a load of fun. This series of small, man-made islands are a sanctuary for lemurs, including habituated ones rescued from the pet trade. This will be the chance to see a few more species that have been elusive or aren’t located in this part of the country, including the beautiful red-ruffed lemur.

On August 14th, we’ll drive back to Tana (4 hours), enjoying a stop at a fun chameleon and reptile farm; you could spend hours examining all of the colors on the chameleons! You have a night reserved at Relais des Plateaux in Tana, whether you are leaving later tonight (we recommend after 8 PM) or tomorrow. If you wish to continue your adventure in Madagascar, we can make suggestions!

Cancellation Policy & Contract

We do everything in our power to do right by our guests.  We are proud to say that in the wake of our COVID-related trip cancellations through 2020 and 2021, we were able to offer each of our guests the choice of a 100% credit, if not a full refund.

We’ve re-examined each trip and done our best to reduce the deposit amounts as much as possible. Upon your registration, your deposit immediately goes toward reserving your space for flights, hotels, and excursions that must be booked months in advance and are often non-refundable.

Cancellation by our guests

The cancellation charges are as follows unless otherwise indicated on the detailed itinerary for each trip. All cancellations must be received via e-mail or US mail.

  • Cancellations prior to 120 days to departure, money will be refunded minus the non-refundable deposit. Please note that deposits for any pre-trip or post-trip extensions are not transferable to another portion of the trip should you decide to cancel that module of the journey.
  • Cancellations received 61 to 119 days prior to departure are subject to a penalty of 50% of the total cost of the trip.
  • Cancellations received 60 days or less prior to trip departure will forfeit the entire cost of the trip.

If a trip is cancelled by RetreaTours

When a tour is cancelled in the case of  force majeure , the Tour Participant will receive a refund minus any funds that we are unable to recover from any supplier.

You can see the full cancellation policy in our contract here.

Your passport must have at least 3 blank pages and be valid for at least 6 months beyond the end of the trip (that is Feb 11, 2025).

You can get a Madagascar visa upon arrival at the airport in Antananarivo for $37 USD, valid for 30 days.

Vaccines and Staying Healthy

RetreaTours requires proof of a COVID-19 vaccine and booster for this journey.

No vaccines are required to enter Madagascar, but we highly encourage you to work with your local travel clinic or the travel department of your local health department (often a much cheaper option).

  • Please see the CDC’s general advice for Madagascar here.
  • Please see the NHS’s general advice for Madagascar here.

Malaria is present in Madagascar; you can see the NHS malaria map of Madagascar here.   If you choose to take malaria preventatives, please work with your travel physician for the right medication for you.

Staying Healthy on Tour

Please visit our comprehensive article, “How to Stay Healthy While Traveling…Naturally, ” which addresses all of the most common travel ailments.

Expected Temperatures & Suggested Packing List

We’ll provide a suggested packing list several months before this journey.

Temperature by location

These conditions are based on historical averages, thanks to WeatherSpark.com. The range as a whole is 55-85°F (13-29°C)

  • Berenty: 65-85°F, 15% chance of light rain
  • Antananarivo: 55-75°F, 15% chance of light rain
  • Palmarium (Toamasina): 65-80°F, 14% chance of light rain
  • Andasibe:   55-75°F, 25% chance of rain (not bad for a rainforest!)

Each of these hotels was carefully chosen for its comfort, location, and character. They each have their own private bathroom and shower. The rooms at Palmarium do not have air conditioning.

It is important to note that Palmarium is quite remote so that they can provide the most authentic, engaged experience. For that reason, there may hours throughout the day or night when there is no electricity. We will always let you know when these planned hours are so you can properly charge your phone and cameras.

Each hotel has been carefully chosen based on their locations and access to wildlife.

Here is a list of all of our reserved hotels:

  • La Croix du Sud
  • Manjanaro Lodge & Spa

One of the more surprising things about traveling in Madagascar is the food–the superb quality, the stunning presentation, and the sheer quantity! The vast majority of our meals will be French-influenced and have three courses. Everything is, of course, optional!

Most any dietary requirements can be met on this journey with enough notice. Please indicate any special requests/allergies on the registration form and we’ll reach out to you with any advice or information necessary before taking your deposit.

Bringing Snacks

If you are a “snack-y” person, you may wish to bring some snacks from home as it won’t always be easy to get snacks (especially ones you are familiar with) on the road. This might mean nuts, protein bars, or other sealed, portable goodies.

Can I drink the tap water?

Please stick to bottled or filtered water on this journey.

The internet outside the capital city can be very, very slow. We recommend staying connected with your loved ones via WhatsApp (which we will also use on the tour to communicate the schedule and updates). WhatsApp seems to work with the slightest wisp of wifi.

Electrical Outlets and Adaptors

You’ll need a 2-pin European prong Type C adaptor for Madagascar .  We highly recommend a Universal Adaptor such as this , which also has USB and USB-C outlets so you can charge multiple devices at once.

There are no strict fitness requirements required for this trip because all activities are optional. However, in order to get the most out of your experience, here are our suggested fitness requirements.

We recommend being comfortable driving for up to 3 hours at a time, often on a bumpy road (some drives are 4 hours, but we’ll always stop to stretch or use restroom facilities during that time).

We recommend being comfortable walking 2 miles at a moderate pace. Many of our walks will be on flat dirt paths (Berenty and Palmarium) and some of the Andasibe rainforest walks have some elevation changes (including stairs) where you may find a hiking pole/walking stick useful. Some hikes in Andasibe will be several miles, but with frequent stops to look for and at wildlife.

Our accommodation at Palmarium requires a walk up 2-3 flights of stairs to and from the lake level (upon arrival, departure, excursions, and any time you feel like visiting the lake).

If you have any questions about your fitness for this trip, please reach out to us and we’ll answer any questions you have!

If you’ve researched travel in Madagascar, you might not be surprised to hear that road conditions can be challenging. For that reason, we have designed this journey to maximize your experience while minimizing drive times. When we are driving, our expert drivers go slow and know how to minimize jostling as much as possible.

Here are descriptions of our travel times:

  • Tana to Fort Dauphin flight (and return): 2 hours
  • Fort Dauphin to Berenty Reserve (and return):  This 51 miles drive will take between 3-4 hours on dirt roads.
  • Tana to Toamasina flight: 50 minutes
  • Toamsina to Palmarium: ~3-hour boat ride in a calm Intracoastal canal system in a covered boat
  • Palmarium to Andasibe: ~90-minute boat ride in the same canal but this time headed south. Then we’ll take a ~30-45 minute drive (only 4.5 miles) on a bouncy road to meet the main road.  From the main road, it is ~3 hours (80 miles) to Andasibe on a main national highway that is improving but still will be slow going.
  • Andasibe to Tana: We’ll travel to 88 miles back to the capital on a road that has received the most improvement, but we should still bank on it taking 3.5 to 4 hours.

Required Coverage

RetreaTours requires that each guest carries travel insurance that covers emergency medical treatment and emergency evacuation and repatriation. Please send Lauren your policy information as soon as you have it.

Suggested Coverage

We suggest trip cancellation insurance, as well, as you never know what obstacles life can toss at you leading up to a trip. However, we do not require this coverage, we only suggest it highly.

Please familiarize yourself with RetreaTours’ guest cancellation policy in your journey’s contract. Please read this article to understand a bit more about trip cancellation insurance and what it may or may not cover. “Cancel For Any Reason” policies do exist, as well, although do check to see what percentage of the trip cost they actually reimburse.

When to purchase your policy

Please purchase this insurance as soon as we tell you the trip has reached its minimum. Please do not wait until the last minute, should you need to use your (optional) cancellation coverage before then.

Where to search for policies

Below you will find some options to start your search for trip insurance. However, we ask that you carefully consider your choice in travel insurance. What works for some people may not work for others, particularly if you have any pre-existing conditions. Please do take the time to consider the best policy for your individual needs.

Squaremouth.com and InsureMyTrip.com are two sites where you can see and compare many policies at once, and you can refine the options by what coverage you would like. Squaremouth’s interface is very easy and intuitive to use, and you can easily opt out of trip cancellation coverage.

World Nomads provides policies for guests under 70 that includes trip cancellation options. Use the link above and pop in your info to get an immediate quote.

It may also be a good idea to check with your credit card companies, especially American Express, to see if they offer any medical coverage for travel.

About your International Flights - How to Fly to Madagascar

We are more than happy to recommend international flights, but ultimately you will make the purchase yourself. We recommend purchasing them directly through the airline when you can, as this makes any potential changes a bit easier than going through sites like Expedia or Kayak.

Depending on which portions of the journey you are registering for, we’ll make personalized recommendations for your arrival and departure dates.

The airports with connections to Madagascar currently include:

  • Paris (CDG)
  • Istanbul (IST)
  • Addis Ababa (ADD)
  • Nairobi (NBO)
  • Johannesburg (JNB)
  • Reunion (often as a stop, sometimes without getting off the plane)
  • Mauritius (often as a stop, sometimes without getting off the plane)

RetreaTours is Climate Positive!

We purchase triple carbon offsets for your travels with us—that’s from your home, through the entire tour, and back to your home again, times three !

RetreaTours is officially a Carbon free ® Partner with Carbonfund.org , as well as a partner with Cool Effect .

You may have heard the term “carbon neutral,” which means that a company offsets as much carbon as it produces. With this 300% offset, RetreaTours is actually offsetting  more carbon than we produce each year, making us “carbon negative” (or “climate positive,” which has a nicer ring to it!)

Since 2012 we’ve focused on making travel safe and easy for our guests; with our triple carbon offset tours, we’re pleased to make our trips as sustainable as they are memorable.

Please see more at RetreaTours.com/CarbonNegative

Madagascar - Travel Highlights and Travel Tips

While holidaying in Madagascar, one must visit the Antsiranana Bay

A famous island, situated within the Indian Ocean, a trip to Madagascar will make you come close to lush natural landscapes, diverse animal life and a rich cultural heritage. Although it is estimated that the majority (above 90%) of Madagascar's forests have been eradicated, travelers can still take excursions through the forests that remain and maybe even spot the famous ring tailed lemur! Check out these lush forests if you are planning a holiday to Madagascar, and you may find out the inspiration behind the animated movie.

Travel Highlights

  • Go kayaking and fishing. Travelers can schedule kayaking tours led by guides. This is a popular way to see a good portion of Madagascar. Also, it is a great place for deep-sea fishing. Get away from the crowded beaches and go after some King Mackerel!
  • Plan a wildlife excursions. What better way to get a taste of the wildlife home to Madagascar? Although some of the roads have been for too long unattended, you may get a chance to spot a lemur, an animal endemic to Madagascar.
  • See the Baobab trees. This grove of mystical Baobab trees are sometimes over 800 years old, and beyond worthy of being caught on camera.

Travel Tips

  • For a good meal on a budget, check out some of the local marketplaces. A simple yet satisfying dish of chicken and rice with a vegetable side can be purchased for cheap.
  • Check out some local and informative podcasts. It's always surprising how much can be learned by tuning into a local’s podcast. This is a great way to get the inside scoop on the country you're visiting.
  • Be conscious of how you dress and be careful not to ‘flaunt’ your possessions.
  • Another way of not standing out is to pay for things with smaller bills. Doing so when you're out to eat or buying some souvenirs is a good way to not display exuberant wealth.

Madagascar Attractions & Landmarks Guide

Madagascar, the world’s fourth largest island, is known as the “Galapagos of Africa,” serving as a kind of living laboratory in the Indian Ocean. After splitting off from mainland Africa around 100 million years ago, and now lying some 225 miles away across the Mozambique Channel, its endemic animal species developed fully apart from the rest of the continent -- and the world.

Almost all of its mammal species -- including the island’s famous lemurs, a primitive type of primates -- are found nowhere else on earth. (The two major exceptions are bats as well as some lemurs found on the nearby Comoros Islands.)

Madagascar’s biodiversity is among the richest on the planet. Some 11,000 endemic plant species blanket the island, and more species of both flora and fauna are being discovered every year -- even as many others become endangered and face extinction.

Madagascar’s birds, reptiles, and amphibians are also mostly endemic. The world’s biggest and smallest chameleons, the world’s biggest primates (400-pound lemurs, now extinct) and the world’s largest bird -- the elephant bird, also now extinct -- are or were all found here.

Lemurs Are the Stars

Lemurs are the big draw in the wildlife parade. Madagascar has more than 100 species or subspecies of lemurs including pygmy mouse lemurs, the world’s smallest primates. Among the better known species are ring-tailed lemurs, aye-ayes, indris and sifakas. Loss of habitat and hunting, however, have also left lemurs the world’s most endangered primates.

The country has been aggressively establishing parks and reserves to try to protect those remaining, and deforestation has dropped dramatically in those areas. But a healthy eco-tourism industry, bringing much needed jobs and revenues into an impoverished country, is essential to maintaining their rainforest habitats.

You can look for lemurs in a number of locations throughout the island. One of the best is Montagne d’Ambre National Park, a rainforest wilderness dotted with lakes and waterfalls in the northern reaches of the island. It’s also home to the world’s smallest chameleons, among the park’s 59 species of reptiles.

Another park in the northern part of the island, Ankarana Reserve, is also rich in wildlife and plant life, as is Andasibe National Park in eastern Madagascar, where you may see several varieties of lemurs, birds and chameleons. A private reserve, Palmarium Park, also on the eastern side of the island, showcases lemurs as well as various endemic trees and plants including orchids and mahogany trees.

Giant Baobabs

Giant baobabs, though, with their massive, gnarly trunks, are the most striking trees on the island. Madagascar is ringed by tropical beaches, which provide a great way to relax after tracking lemurs or spotting chameleons in the rainforests. One of the best places to recharge is Nosy Be, a much smaller island that lies about ten miles offshore, where the beaches are lined with palm trees and the snorkeling and diving are excellent amid the coral reefs.

The inland capital and largest city, Antananarivo (Tana), is built on hills and features steep stair-step streets, busy markets and old palaces to explore, while coastal Antsiranana (formerly Diego-Suarez) at the northern tip of Madagascar is located on a beautiful bay.

By far the best way to see endangered lemurs and other exotic wildlife on Madagascar is via guided tours, led by experts in navigating the local rainforests and highlands. You can rely on Stride to help you find the best outfitters on this unforgettable island.

The Different Ecological Regions of Madagascar

Madagascar is the world’s fourth largest island and as such exhibits several microclimates and the temperature fluctuates dramatically. There are 5 major climate zones (also called biomes) in Madagascar:

1. Desert - Southern Madagascar exhibits desert landscapes, most notable for the “Spiny Forest” which only thrive in this particularly arid region of Madagascar. If you visit the Spiny Forest, you’ll see plants that belong to the “ Didiereaceae” family and are native to Madagascar - seen very little anywhere else on earth.

2. Savanna - The southern part of Madagascar is also where you’ll find large and flat savanna landscape, famous for the whimsically shaped Baobab trees.

3. Tropical Rainforest - Central Madagascar and the eastern coasts have high humidity and rainfall - the perfect conditions for Tropical Rainforest. Along the coasts the conditions are very similar to the Amazon basin. In the Lowland Madagascar rainforest is where you’ll find a majority of the famous ring tailed lemurs.

4. Mountain Range - There is also a large mountain range in Madagascar, running from the northern part of the island to the south. The highest peak is known as “ Maromokotro” in the Tsaratanana Reserve and is open to experienced climbers.

5. Wetland - The Madagascar wetland regions run along the coasts. Mangrove forests thrive in these ecosystems, as do a large majority of Madagascar’s diverse bird population.

This tour will take you from Antananarivo to Andasibe, Morondava (Baobabs Avenue), Tsingy de Bemaraha, Ranomafana, Isalo and Tulear.

Andasibe National Park

Andasibe National Park is a part of Toamasina. It is 1.5 kilometers from Andasibe, 140 kilometers from Antananarivo, and 200 kilometers from Tamatave. The surface of the area is 16,310 hectares (Analamazaotra Special Reserve is 810 hectares while Mantandia National Park is 15,500 hectares). The climate is very humid, the average annual temperature is 18 degrees Celsius, and the average annual rainfall is 1,700 millimeters spread over 210 hectares.

Fauna & Flora

The park consists of 80% primary forests and 13% secondary forests, subject to the impact of human activity. The special reserve is dedicated to the protection of the largest Malagasy lemur, the indri. An orchid park is also open to the public. There are three campsites and a hotel in the park. When you travel in Madagascar and if you are fans of nature, do not miss to visit this park.

Baobabs Avenue

About ten trees 30 meters high border this avenue, of the species Adansonia grandidieri, endemic to Madagascar. Baobabs, over 800 years old, known locally as renala (in Malagasy for “mother of the forest”), are a heirloom of the dense tropical forests that thrived in Madagascar.

The trees did not grow in isolation in this dry and bushy landscape but were part of a dense forest which has now disappeared (only 10% of primary forests remain in the country). Over the years, with the increase in the country’s population, forests have been cut down for agriculture, leaving only baobab trees, which locals preserve both out of respect and for their value as a source of food and materials of constructions.

Tsingy de Bemaraha

Located in the western part of Madagascar, about 200 kilometers from Morondava, the protected area of Bemaraha covers more than 150,000 hectares. It is home to the famous Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park, one of the most spectacular landscapes of Madagascar and even of the world. The famous Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park is the first tourist attraction that makes the western destination of Madagascar a popular destination for tourists.

The Tsingy are a group of limestone rocks whose formation began several million years ago when the sea still covered the region. Thus, corals and shells have stacked and welded together to form thick layers which have subsequently raised. In the open air, the limestone cracked to give rise to diaclases and canyons. Rainwater that has an acid characteristic has also contributed to erosion by shaping tapered slats and deep tunnels with concretions on the surface. It is a true limestone cathedral characterizing one of the most spectacular natural landscapes of the Great Island and even of the world, hence it’s inscription to the world natural heritage and national cultural heritage of UNESCO.

Tsingy de Bemaraha is strongly regarded as a place of endemism because of their richness in plant and animal species where scientists have recorded a high level of endemism of around 80-90%. The protected area of Bemaraha is a true refuge for rare and endemic animal species. There are 17 rare species of reptiles, including the very small chameleon scientifically called the Brookesia perarmata and a species of rodents, Nesomys lambertoni, found only in the park. There are also 11 species of lemurs, six species of birds, and two species of local endemic amphibians. On the flora side, the park abounds with more than 600 species of plants, but the baobabs, aloes and flamboyants remain the first stars.

Ranomafana National Park

The Ranomafana National Park is located in the southeast of Madagascar straddling the regions of Upper Matsiatra and Vatovavy Fitovinany. It is 412 km south-east of Antananarivo, 65 km north-east of Fianarantsoa and 139 km west of the town of Mananjary. Terrestrial National Park classified World Heritage Site with its dense low-lying humid forest (600-800m), its dense humid forest of medium altitude (800-1400m), its bamboo forest, its marshland where plant and animal species such as Pandanus, Varecia variegata variegate, Crayfish, Limnogale Mergulus choose as habitat.

6 species of fish, 74 species of insects, 90 species of butterfly including 4 rare species, 350 species of spiders, 6 endemic species of crustaceans and a subspecies of crayfish of the group of Astacoides. 58 species of reptiles, 98 species of amphibians, 115 of the 257 species of birds of Madagascar the majority of which is endemic. 12 species of lemurs, 7 species of carnivorous mammals and 20 species of insectivores, 07 species of bats including Myzopoda aurita, a monogenous that exists only in Madagascar. There are also 13 species of rodents.

The Ranomafana forest is of the rainforest type whose hard core considered as primary forest is distant from the road axis. There are Apocynaceae, Euphorbiaceae and Rubiaceae, Dypsis sp and Phloga sp of the family Palmae, Asplenium nidus, orchids of the genera Bulbophyllum and Eulophiella. Large areas of secondary forest are occupied by Psydium cattleyanum of the family Myrtaceae. Tropical hardwoods such as rosewood or Dalbergia sp, maka or Weinmania sp and varongy or Mespilodaphne tapack are also visible. A profusion of rare plants is also identified: ferns, bamboos and hundreds of orchids. Chinese guava occupies more and more spaces and is dispersed by lemurs and frugivorous birds.

Isalo National Park

Isalo is located in the south of Madagascar in Ranohira. The park extends over an area of 81,54 hectares. Isalo is home to a population dominated by the Bara ethnic group mixed with communities of various origins who settled there because of the exploitation of sapphire in the surrounding area of Ilakaka. The territory is also a historically rich archaeological site, as it retains the continental plate connecting Madagascar with Africa, two million years ago.

Tourist attraction

A true tourist attraction for its geomorphological singularities, at the same time varied and unique in the world, it is the most visited site on the island. The park is of rock structure that is globally shaped by the erosion of reddish mountainous sandstones dating back to the Jurassic era of 200 million years ago, extending for nearly 100 kilometers in the north-south direction. Its varied sculptural form is a chain of deep canyons, peaks up to 200 meters high, masses of granite and rock blocks of unstable appearance.

There are currently 82 species of birds, 33 reptiles, 15 amphibians, and 14 mammals including seven primates. Among these, there are the maki, sifaka, and varika. As far as tourists are concerned, the main attractions are the pedestrian routes which, from the outset, are reminiscent of a decorative façade of the Far West.

The climate is tropical, but cooler in the highlands (dropping as low as 5°C at night in July/August in Antananarivo and Andasibe). The dry season is March to October continuing into November in most areas. The east coast is best March-May and September-November, January-March is cyclone season. The south west area is hot, dry and semi-arid. March-April is the best time for flowers and reptiles. November (spring) is generally the best time for wildlife and birds, but lemurs can be viewed all year round. Seasonal weather patterns can be unpredictable.

What to whear?

Lightweight walking bootshoes and trainers is recommended. Clothing should be lightweight, but a warm sweater or jacket is advisable as nights at altitude and under desert conditions can be very cold, even in summer and especially in July to September. Rainwear is highly recommended on all tours for the occasional shower. Warmer layers will be required during the winter months.

Visa and Passport

Madagascar: An entry visa is required by USA citizens and can be obtained on arrival. The visa is chargeable at 40USD and issued for 30 days. The visa fee is payable in USD or Euro and we advise to take small denominations and a little extra as the USD amount is calculated daily by the applicable rate of exchange. For a single-entry tourist visa

You can apply via the e-visa website: https://evisamada.gov.mg/en/ You will need to print a copy of your evisa approval letter and present this with your passport at immigration upon your arrival. The approval letter will take a minimum of 3 days to be processed so we strongly advise for you to apply within plenty of time (maximum of 6 months prior to your arrival) before your departure. You will be permitted to stay within Madagascar for a maximum of up to 90 days and we strongly recommend for you to read the FAQ section on the e-visa website before applying.

It is a condition of booking with HT Agency Tours that you have adequate valid travel insurance. It is your responsibility to arrange appropriate travel insurance and ensure you have read and understood the full terms and conditions of your travel insurance policy to ensure that you are covered for all activities you intend to undertake whilst on the tour, including all optional activities.

Your Insurance Policy must fully cover you for medical expenses and emergency repatriation to your home country. Please ensure your policy includes medical emergency helicopter evacuation in the event of illness or injury and covers the entire duration of your holiday. If you are trekking at altitude, please ensure that there is no upper altitude limit which may limit or exclude cover for your trip.

Vaccinations

Nothing compulsory, but we recommend protection against malaria, tetanus, typhoid, hepatitis A plus, Polio and diptheria. Please note that all travellers aged over 9 months old that have travelled from or have transit via a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission, will need to present a Yellow Fever certificate at immigration/borders in Madagascar for inspection. Consult your travel clinic for latest advice on different prophylaxis available against malaria.

We recommend

Following the advice given by the Government’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office, we strongly recommend the wearing long sleeved shirts and the liberal application of insect repellent as a precautionary measure to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. These precautions should be taken at all times as the mosquitoes are also active during daylight hours. Please check the latest requirements with your travel clinic or doctor prior to departure.

The costs of meals may vary according to the location, type of restaurant and number of courses eaten and so the prices given below are just an average guide.
