Manfrotto BeFree Advanced Tripod: Lever vs Twist Lock

D00M

I plan to get Manfrotto BeFree Advanced Aluminum. Cost is $160 after $30 mail-in rebate.

I also considered MeFoto Backpacker S Aluminum ($150). MeFoto does have the advantage of size (13.2” vs 15.7” folded). But I think Manfotto is more functional: 494 ball head is better and leg lock is better. Thus my decision to go with Manfrotto.

What I now need to decide is lever vs twist for leg lock for Manfrotto. My initial thought is to get the lever lock. I just feel that is easier and faster. Twist lock (M-lock) is a partial turn quick twist for release/lock.

I see that Manfrotto BeFree Advanced Carbon Fiber version is only available in twist lock.  So this makes me wonder. Is lever vs twist lock purely personally preference? Or is there some other factor (maybe reliability or some other reason)? How come Manfrotto BeFree Advanced Carbon Fiber version only available in twist lock?

In addition, Aluminum version lever lock is only available in 1 color (black), whereas twist lock is available in many colors (black, blue, red)

Lever locks can snag against things like clothing, straps and foliage. They can loosen over time and need tightening. If not careful, they can also accidentally pinch your hand.

Lever locks may be slightly faster to deploy than twist locks, but with practice I think the difference is negligible.

For some reason (preferred by pros?) most high end tripods from RRS, Gitzo, ProMediaGear, etc. use twist locks, so if you want a pricey tripod,  you don't have a lot of choices.

Consumer- level tripods use both types of locks, choose what you like more.

Levers are not just slightly faster as someone said, they are a lot faster. Easier on your wrist too.

But if you shoot anywhere near a beach, remember a grain or two of sand can screw your threads up. You'll feel it when you try to tighten.  And sometimes won't even be able to tighten.

I faced this choice not only with tripods but monopods and even hiking sticks.

In general, the clamp locks are more robust and stand up better to foul conditions. Easier to service. And less prone to being somewhat loose (as when you don't twist a twist lock far enough and the leg creeps down under load). They're faster; you set tension via an adjustment screw and it's set vs having to set tension each time with twist locks.

The twists do make for a more compact folded tripod, less likely to hang up on things. It seems to me that carbon tripods are more likely to have twist locks, but maybe not true. There are just generally more twist than flip locks out there, but plenty of both. The fact that twisting always sets tension means sometimes they're a bit easier to adjust, vs the on/off quality of the flip locks.

I like the ability to tell at a glance whether the legs are locked or not with levers.

And as someone else pointed out, twist locks can creep down on you if you haven’t tightened down hard enough and, like I said above, there usually is no visual clue when you reach the right tightness nor the right amount of twist to loosen.

That’s just plain wrong - sorry to say. I have the mentioned Tripod in Carbon, and all twists are halfturn from fully open to fully locked. I can in one grip, and one half turn release all three twistlocks on a leg at once, and Locking each one is easily as faster or faster than lever locks.

I had Lever locks before and thought I wanted them again - I couldn’t because the Carbon model is twist only. Happy that was the case, because I have now learned that levers are just slow and troublesome in the field compared to properly made twitst locks.

I prefer Arca-swiss compatible heads as well as twist locks, so I went with MeFoto.  I find the levers tend to snag on things as I'm carrying it.  For a compact travel tripod I'm pretty satisfied with the MeFoto.

Twist locks are far too vulnerable to getting sand or grit inside them. If you need to service them in the field there are too many components to get lost.

Give me lever locks every time for speed and convenience.

I'd always go lever as they are maintainable and much easier to operate than twist

TheClueless

Until they actually use tripods IRL. The chances of e.g. the locks getting caught are minimal and the fiddliness of twist locks vastly outweighs the 'safety' aspect in actual use if you're looking to get shooting ASAP.

Nothing photo-wise has been as handy as my Vintens (which have a horizontal single lever lock for the entire leg) but I choose lever lock whenever it's offered in a tripod I like.

Camera nerd here who has and uses both types.  I find the levers on my Bogen 3221 tend to catch branches & shrubbery as I'm carrying it around.  But, it's solid as a rock and what I need when I'm shooting with a 500 f/4.

The MeFoto twist locks on my travel tripod are great, and I've never had any issues with them.

So my real-world experience trumps your "what most camera nerds..." comment.

One experience doesn't trump "most".

We should probably poll ever camera nerd on the planet.

If lever locks were in reality that much better than twist locks "for most", they would be the only offering on the market or twist locks would be hard to come by. The fact is that some people prefer the levers, some prefer the twist locks.  So my experience, as well as that noted by others in this thread, does in fact trump a baseless comment about "most".  Neither one is overwhelmingly better than the other. Choices are a good thing.

Not sure why you're trying to argue with me.

I don't claim to know what "most" camera nerds buy.  I jokingly suggested polling them all then simply said your one experience (and now you've added more experiences to that), in no way trumps "most" camera nerds' choices.

Whatever those choices may be.

I have both lever and twist lock. I started with lever but added twist when I needed a light weight, compact travel tripod and only twist was available in the size I wanted. When I bought super telephotos for birding, I went with twist as well as this is what Gitzo offered.

I haven't had problems with either style, whether shooting around town or in the field, sometimes under less-than ideal conditions. The lever style might be a bit faster, but not enough to make a difference for me. I haven't had any problems with the twist lock slipping, this with a 1-series DSLR, flash, external battery pack, gimbal head and 800 f/5.6 lens.

Cheers, Doug

Thank you to everyone for your feedback. All very helpful. There are some pros and cons either way, but seems to me none of these are super 1-sided. Just come down to preference.

After doing more research, I think Manfrotto folded length of 15.7" is a bit larger than I want. It will be hard to fit into day backpack. I see Oben and Surui have some travel tripod that folds down to 12".  So I will do more research into various options for small travel tripod.

I was able to reverse mine on the Manfrotto 190B. Levers are now "internal". Swings and roundabouts. It doesn't pack down as tightly, and some levers are a little harder to access but it's a lot smoother in the bush and in the car.

International travel is back at last, but have you got one of the best travel tripods ? If you’re planning trips abroad – perhaps to indulge in some landscape photography or astro-photography – then you’re going to need a good tripod. Full-height tripods are the best, of course, but they’re heavy. Cue the Manfrotto Befree Advanced Travel Tripod Twist, a super-lightweight aluminum tripod designed for travel. Packed with innovations, it’s nevertheless shorter than most.

• Best tripods • Best travel tripods • Best monopods • Best camera backpacks

A stable-mate of the impressive Manfrotto Befree 3 Way Live Advanced tripod in the Italian manufacturer’s lightweight ‘BeFree’ line-up of travel tripods, this version differs quite significantly in that it uses a completely different ball-head, has a different leg clasp system and weighs just 1.49g instead of 2kg. So it’s generally better for travel for general photography,  whereas the Befree 3 Way Live Advanced is aimed more at videography.

Manfrotto BeFree Advanced Twist Travel Tripod

The Befree Advanced Travel Tripod Twist is all about travel, but offers extra support compared to most similar products. Its safety payload tops-out at 9kg, though in our tests it was able to take an awful lot of gear – we’re talking full-frame cameras with heavy lenses.

Still, its key feature is that it weighs a mere 1.49kg, and when packed up it's just 40 cm long (though its ball-head adds another 14cm). That’s compact enough to fit into most luggage, though it’s not nearly as neat and slim as the Peak Design Travel Tripod . As with all travel tripods, the Befree Advanced Travel Tripod’s center column is crucial to its design. So often a weak point, here it’s sturdy enough to shoot long exposures from, thanks largely to a locking ring at its base that secures it. When raised it enables the Befree Advanced Travel Tripod Twist, on its four-section legs, to stretch from 127cm to reach a maximum height of 150cm.

The Befree Advanced Travel Tripod Twist comes bundled with Manfrotto’s compact Advanced 494 aluminium center ball head, which has three independent ergonomic controls. It takes a little getting to know, but gives the photographer a lot of positional flexibility. It comes with a 200PL-PRO plate (RC2 & Arca-swiss compatible) and there’s a useful locking mechanism to add peace of mind, too.

Performance, quality and usability

Manfrotto BeFree Advanced Twist Travel Tripod

The Befree Advanced Travel Tripod Twist’s lightweight design might suggest that it’s right on the bubble when it comes to supporting full-frame gear, but that’s not the case. Even when it was loaded with gear, at no point did we experience any droop or slippage.

Shipping with the ball-head is a 200PL-PRO plate that attaches to a camera using a D-ring, but can be tightened using a hex key in the box. Although we didn’t use it, the side of this tripod’s center does include a small hook for hanging a bag or similar, though be careful about using such things in high winds, which (rather counter intuitively) can actually reduce stability by increasing the surface area of the rig. There’s also a useful attachment on the tripod for hooking-up, say, another small tripod to support a smartphone or action camera.

Manfrotto BeFree Advanced Twist Travel Tripod

When out in the field the Befree Advanced Travel Tripod Twist’s ball-head proved really useful, allowing easy panoramic movements that keep the horizon flat (really useful for creating stitching panoramas), but also some novel friction control (which adjusts the ball tension) and a useful locking mechanism.

Manfrotto BeFree Advanced Twist Travel Tripod

This tripod is also easy to unfurl and take down. That’s largely thanks to new rubberised ‘M-lock’ twist-lock rings on the leg joins, which are simple enough to unfurl all at once if you have big hands. They’re also easy to operate in gloves, or with bare hands in the cold.

Packing the Befree Advanced Travel Tripod Twist in luggage isn’t super-easy. There are a few ways you can do it, but by far the easiest is to remove the ball-head altogether then pull all three legs back on themselves through 180º. It’s not perfect – there are still a lot of gaps – but it remains 9.5cm wide.

Manfrotto BeFree Advanced Twist Travel Tripod

It’s generally accepted that you shouldn’t extend that center column of a tripod unless absolutely necessary. On a relatively small, lightweight and compact tripod like the Befree Advanced Travel Tripod Twist, that’s usually a downside. So we love its super-sturdy center column – complete with locking mechanism – and its overall ability to remain solid and steady. Add a lightweight design, M-lock legs and an excellent ball-head and the Befree Advanced Travel Tripod Twist makes a play for being one of the best travel tripods available for all-round use that brings more advances than compromises.

10 Of The Most Popular Camera Tripods, Ranked By Portability

We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

You may have a steady hand, but some shots require the stability afforded by a good tripod, which makes them an essential camera accessory . Camera tripods come in a variety of designs and flavors, from behemoths for use in fixed locations to sleek designs portable enough to tote while hiking to stunning landscapes.

However, the definition of portable can vary in the eye of the beholder. It can connote a lightweight piece of equipment, a compact size -- or both. Which of these metrics matters most depends on how you plan to use the tripod and how much tripod you feel comfortable carrying around. If weight is paramount, you're likely going to focus on carbon fiber models, although those models carry a price premium. If you can tolerate a slightly heavier design, aluminum tripods can be a good price alternative. Other points to consider when buying a tripod include the load capacity, minimum and maximum height, whether it includes a ball head, and its locking mechanisms.

We took all of these perspectives into account when considering this list. When considering portability, we focused on tripods that could hold more than 15 pounds of gear and weighed less than 3.5 pounds -- although we did find a few interesting travel tripods that held less than 9 pounds of gear or weighed closer to 4 pounds. At the end of the day, your choice comes down to personal design preferences and your budget. Read on for our picks of the 10 most popular camera tripods, ranked by portability.

SmallRig AP-10

The SmallRig AP-10 is a carbon fiber tripod with the longest folded length of any on our list -- 21.1 inches. That folded length may make this awkward to add to your backpack, even if you're attaching it to the outside of your bag. Yes, it does come with a shoulder bag, but for some, the folded length might be a drawback. That said, this is also one of the lightest tripods around that can hold a range of gear, as it weighs just 2.6 pounds yet can hold up to 26.5 pounds. In addition, the maximum height is 52.4 inches.

The tripod includes a ball head with pan and friction knobs, 360-degree panning, and a 90-degree tilt. The head also supports Arca-Swiss quick-release plates. The tripod lacks a center column, but you can attach the ball head to the one removable leg to convert this into a monopod. You can buy the SmallRig AP-10 tripod for $139 at B&H Photo .

3 Legged Thing Legends Bucky

The 3 Legged Thing Legends Bucky is a carbon fiber travel tripod that extends extra high and gets extra low. Its load capacity is up to 66 pounds, with a maximum height of 71 inches, which is terrific whether you're the tallest person in the room or if you want to shoot from on high using a remote. The minimum height is 4.3 inches using the standard legs, which is one of the lowest specs we've seen for a convertible standard tripod to table-top tripod. It also converts into a table-top tripod if you add the $70 Vanz dual ball and spike legs.

Bucky's folded length is 16.1 inches, which is large enough to struggle with being inside a backpack but compact enough to travel -- the kit includes a padded carry bag with a shoulder strap and handles. The hallmark of British manufacturer 3 Legged Thing's approach to tripods is modularity, and this model is no exception. The legs and column are removable, which is how this tripod converts into a monopod or tabletop tripod.

The base model comes with a flat mount, but 3 Legged Thing sells a version with its AirHead Vu ball head for $100 more. The five-section legs have leg locks with a unique squared-off design that makes it simpler to lock into place, even if you have gloves on. At 3.4 pounds, this model is a bit heavier than our most portable models, but this tripod makes the cut for its unique design and capabilities.

The 3 Legged Thing Bucky is $430 at B&H Photo  and 3 Legged Thing . Add the company's AirHead Vu ball head and pay $530 at 3 Legged Things .

Benro Induro Hydra 2

The Benro Induro Hydra 2 is, as its name implies, a waterproof tripod that's primed to go on all your outdoor adventures, regardless of how harsh the terrain -- or the weather. Benro specifically calls out how this model has waterproof and dust-resistant twist locks on the tripod's carbon fiber legs, which boosts both the endurance and durability of the tripod. The locks are larger than most and easy to turn, even with gloves on.

The tripod has five sections, with a maximum height of 60 inches and a minimum height of 13.2. Its legs fold upwards, but even with five sections, the Induro Hydra 2 remains a bit bulky. It's portable, but when folded it measures 16.7 inches, which means it's too big for a typical backpack. Benro supplies a padded carry case with both handles and a shoulder strap, but this won't be something you pop into your bag. That said, its weight is a reasonable 3.3 pounds, making it a good companion that straps to the side of your backpack.

The Hydra has a center column and includes a built-in bubble level. It also has a ballast hook should you want to add weight or hook a bag to it. Speaking of weight, the Hydra is one of the sturdiest portable tripods we found -- it supports up to 37.5 pounds. Built into the tripod is a hidden hex wrench, so you can make adjustments to leg tension and more on the fly. This tripod is sold for legs only and does not come with a ball head. The Benro Induro Hydra 2 costs $475 at B&H Photo .

Zomei Z669C

The Zomei Z669C delivers a versatile tripod that won't break the bank. This carbon fiber model weighs 3.2 pounds and measures 14 inches when folded. That translates to a highly portable package that can fit inside many backpack designs. Yet, it still feels sturdy and is capable of supporting up to 33 pounds of gear. Its maximum height is 59.4 inches, and its minimum height is 20.8 inches. With five sections and padded twist locks, it's easy to set this up on the fly. The rubber feet adjust so you can add spikes for added stability on some terrain.

The tripod has a removable center column that you can attach to one of the legs to convert it into a monopod. Alternatively, you can invert the central column to mix up the angle and shoot from low down from between the tripod's legs for added creativity. It comes with a ball head that's compatible with Arca-Swiss plates for quick removal.

You can buy the Zomei Z669C for $120 at Amazon . Zomei makes the same tripod in aluminum. That version is a little heavier, at 3.6 pounds –- but that weight comes at a savings of $45, bringing the total price of this tripod down to just $75 at Amazon , which makes this a great tripod for beginners looking to find accessories a new camera .

Manfrotto Element MII

At 3 pounds and a folded length of 16.9 inches, the Manfrotto Element MII is portable enough to bring with you, even if it might be a tight fit inside a backpack. It has three-section adjustable-angle carbon fiber legs with an aluminum Manfrotto ball head capable of smooth adjustments along a single axis, with a pan lock and friction control knob, too. The head is not sold separately, but it supports Manfrotto and some Arca-Swiss quick-release plates.

This tripod supports up to 17.6 pounds of gear. Its extensible center column lets the tripod stand an impressive 63 inches tall, with a modest minimum height of 16.9 inches, which is the same as its folded length. This model is a good choice for content creators using a mobile phone since it also comes with a universal smartphone clamp for phones up to 3.2 inches in width and a Bluetooth remote control. You can find the Manfrotto Element MII at B&H Photo for $188.

Benro MeFoto RoadTrip Pro Carbon Fiber Series 1

The Benro MeFoto RoadTrip Pro Carbon Fiber Series 1 tripod is one of the most versatile tripods we've seen for the price. It includes a Benro Q-series ball head and a convertible center column design that lets you turn it into a monopod as well. This tripod weighs 3 pounds, and it folds up to 15.1 inches, making it a fairly compact and portable package to take with you. The carbon fiber legs have five sections, with metal twist locks. Each leg is independently adjustable.

The tripod's maximum load capacity is 17.6 pounds, which is enough for most body and lens combinations. Its maximum height is 61.8 inches, and its minimum height is 15.6 inches, just a bit more than the tripod's folded height. The center column comes off easily, and a removable padded leg lets you turn this tripod into a monopod. You can also invert the center column to get low-angle shots, and there is a set of small legs hidden inside the center column that works with the ball head to turn this tripod into a table-top tripod. The ball head itself includes an Arca-Swiss compatible QR plate and a separate plate that includes a convertible phone holder.

You can find the Benro MeFoto RoadTrip Pro Carbon Fiber Series 1 for $199 at B&H Photo .

Manfrotto Befree Advanced Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod

Our second Manfrotto tripod to make the cut is the Manfrotto Befree Advanced Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod, which includes Manfrotto's 494 ball head with pan and friction knobs and a separate panoramic knob. The head supports the Manfrotto RC2 and Arca-Swiss quick-release plate mounts, so you have flexibility on what accessories to use. It has a load capacity of 19.8 pounds, with a maximum height of 59.1 inches and a minimum height of 16.1 inches, which is the same as its folded length.

The carbon fiber legs have four sections and use Manfrotto's M-Lock design for twist leg locks. The legs have three angles you can adjust independently. The tripod also has Manfrotto's Easy Link design–seen on other, pro-grade models–for attaching lights or reflectors to the Befree.

Buy the Befree Advanced Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod for $374 at Amazon or $390 at B&H Photo .

Peak Design Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod

The Peak Design Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod mixes an elegant space-saving design with functionality. The Peak Design tripod weighs 2.8 pounds and folds up to 15.5 inches, making it a reasonably compact package. Even better, It folds up tighter than most with its angled leg design that lets the legs get closer when folded. The tripod can hold up to 20 pounds of gear. It has a maximum height of 60 inches, and a minimum height of 5.5 inches, so you can get low down for creative angles. You can also invert the center column for low-angle shots.

The carbon fiber legs have five sections with flip locks. The ball head's minimalist design eschews the usual knobs and protrusions on ball heads for a single adjustment and locking ring. The ball head includes a Peak Design mounting plate, but it's also compatible with Arca-Swiss style plates, and it includes a mobile mount inside the center column. The center column itself has a weight hook. The tripod has mounts for a shoulder strap, too, although these are sold separately.

Buy the Peak Design Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod for $600 at B&H Photo  or Amazon . You can also find the aluminum version -- which weighs more but costs less -- for $380 at B&H Photo .

Sirui ET-1204

The Sirui ET-1204 carbon fiber tripod weighs 2.4 pounds and has a load capacity of 17.6 pounds, plenty for most camera and lens configurations. If you anticipate needing a higher load capacity, it's worth noting the similarly designed, slightly more expensive–and slightly less portable–ET-2204 supports up to 26.5 pounds to accommodate bigger lenses , although it's also half a pound heavier.

This model is one of the few we found that includes both standard and short center columns. The inclusion of both makes it easy to use one tripod in a variety of different scenarios and environments. The short column lets this tripod go down as low as 5.1 inches. Keep in mind, however, that when it does so the legs splay out, which means the ET-1204 requires a larger footprint than a dedicated tabletop tripod. It can also stand up to 55.1 inches tall.

The tripod's legs fold up in reverse to 16.5 inches, which is a little large for most backpacks. The tripod's legs have four sections, each independently adjustable using an unusually wide flip lock. Two legs have padding, too. The rubber feet also integrate metal spikes for further stability.

You can buy the Sirui ET-1204 for $200 at B&H Photo . If you like this tripod's design and are willing to trade weight for money, Sirui has an aluminum version that weighs half a pound more but saves you $60 on B&H Photo , where it retails for $140. Finally, the higher capacity Sirui ET-2204 sells for $250 at B&H Photo .

Gitzo GIGT1555T Traveler Series 1

The old adage that you get what you pay for comes to mind with regard to the Gitzo GIGT155T Traveler Series 1 tripod. This legs-only model is one of the most expensive on our list, but it is also the lightest and most compact. It weighs just 2.3 pounds and folds to 14 inches, making it easy to tote around all day long on your adventures. The tripod uses Gitzo's reinforced Carbon eXact Tube design which contributes to its sturdy feel, even if you max out its 22-pound load capacity. The legs use a twist-lock designed by Gitzo to be both ergonomic and quick to set in place.

The legs have five sections that fold up in reverse and the maximum height is 54.3 inches. With the invertible short center column, you can get creative low angles down to 7.9 inches. It has convenient built-in hooks for a shoulder strap, so you can throw the tripod over your shoulder if you prefer. If you've got the cash, you can buy the Gitzo GIGT155T Traveler Series 1 tripod for $550 at B&H Photo .

Can the head included in the kit be replaced with another head?

Yes, Befree can be paired with any head with a standard thread 3/8″ screw. However, only the Befree series heads will allow the legs to fold up around it properly. All Befree heads can be conveniently stored in the provided carrying bag.

How is Befree Advanced collection composed and which type of photography is it suitable for?

There are 3 categories: Befree Advanced for photography, Advanced 3-Way for photo/video and Advanced Live for videography, suitable for a wide range of photography, including landscape, macro, portrait, street photography, astrophotography and more.

What is the difference between the lever and twist lock? Which lock should I choose?

The structure of twist lock is simple, easy to clean, replace and maintain. Twist locks prevent accidental latching during transportation. Lever locks give explicit indication when locked or unlocked - enabling quicker set-up.

Which material type should I choose, aluminum or carbon fiber?

Aluminum tripods are robust, stable, heavier, and affordable. Carbon fiber tripods are the perfect choice if you’re looking for a high-performance solution while being as light as possible.

Customers like the performance of the camera tripod. They say it works decently okay, works smoothly, and looks like it should last a very long time. The controls work well, and the leg lever locks simplify locking the legs. Overall, customers say it's a good product and easy to travel with.

Customers are mixed about the tightness of the camera tripod. Some mention that the twist locks are tight, the lever locks are secure, and the ball head locks up tightly. However, others say that both the quick release and tension knobs locked up several times during light use in a beach environment, causing them to stick in the tripod. They also say that the unlocking mechanism is hard to operate and the locking buttons are hard to manage.

Customers are dissatisfied with the value of the camera tripod. They mention that it's not worth the price, it'd be better off buying a different tripod, and the quality is not outstanding.

"Good quality but not outstanding . Light, compact, well made, just a bit pricey for what it is. I would look elsewhere for your money." Read more

Customers are dissatisfied with the sturdiness of the camera tripod. They mention that the legs are too thin and not stable enough when extended. The tripod is also not sturdy and can wobble or shake with any weight. The legs are jittery and not rigid, and the ball head tended to creep. Some customers say that the tripod fell apart after one use.

"...It works, but the joints wobble (bad design even when new) and it could never quite match the camera lense to my height (6'2"), so I found myself..." Read more

"...Since the legs are thinner, it gets pretty top heavy and wobbly with that much weight on it, but it handles my smaller lenses no problem..." Read more

"...it and then it can be pushed down or up, but it is sticky and clunky while moving , just feels cheap...." Read more

"...It is light weight and due to that not as sturdy as is required for Iceland winds." Read more

Befree Advanced / Legs. The legs extend in four sections. They lock in place with twist locks. They have rubberized grips that are reasonably grippy with cold or wet hands but, at the same time, don't stand out as the best available. The M-Lock twist locks on the legs. 11. Manfrotto BeFree Advanced Tripod: Lever vs Twist Lock
