How to Take the Free Mazda Factory Tour Japan

Japan is famous for its factory tours.  One of the best that we visited was the Mazda Factory Tour at the head office in Hiroshima.  The Mazda Factory is located just a 6 minute train ride from Hiroshima and is very easy to get to.  The Mazda Tour includes a guided tour around the Hiroshima Mazda Museum, then a bus trip through the plant.  The visit also includes a tour of active production lines.  All in all it’s a superb visit and a great free thing to do in Japan, for us it was the best of the Japan car factory tours.

Mazda Museum Hiroshima History

Since 1931 Mazda has been producing automobiles in Hiroshima. Born the Toyo Cork Kogyo company in 1920, the company’s main plant is here in Hiroshima.  It has 3 plants and 4 proving grounds in Japan.  There are a further 15 sites worldwide that produced a total of 1.29 million cars in the 2021.

Mazda Factory Tour – What to Expect.

There were about 25 of us on the English speaking tour and the excellent Ms Yamamoto took us on the 90 minute trip.  The Hiroshima Mazda Factory tour also includes Mazda museum access.

First of all there’s a bus, which is an Isuzu, as Mazda don’t make buses. It takes you on the 10 minute journey from the head office to the Mazda car museum.

Mazda’s plant is huge, and runs 33 buses for employees and visitors across the plant.  The plant includes its own energy generating plant and four waste water treatment plants.  There’s housing for single workers, plus there’s a bridge that is used ONLY by Mazda.

We start with a 10 minute corporate video that tells us that the founder didn’t celebrate his 70th birthday as it fell on 6 August 1945, the day the Atomic Bomb dropped.  We also learn that following the dropping of the atomic bomb, the plant was up and running with production of three wheeled trucks within 4 months.

It’s a lovely corporate video with history, corporate information and a vision that has me drinking the Kool Aid as we head into the museum. There are other groups here including lots of school groups.  However, while we’re in the museum and in the assembly line, there’s only our group, so you don’t feel crowded.

Then as we’re given a little of the history of Mazda, we get to see some of the historic models.

What to see at the Mazda Car Museum Hiroshima

There’s a three wheeled truck produced in 1935 – the first was produced in 1931.  We see the first four seater car, the R360 Coupe, to the glorious Cosmo Sport 110S and the ubiquitous MX5.

Mazda R360 Coupe on Factory tour

The First Japanese Car to win Le Mans

We get to see the actual first Japanese car – the 787B – that won the Le Mans race in 1991, with a rotary engine.  There’s the history and development of the rotary engine, produced between 1967 and 2012.

It’s not been copied by any other auto manufacturer says Mazda. It’s no longer in production, but research continues, Ms Yamamoto tells us.

Mazda Engine on factory tour

Production Displays at the Mazda Museum Japan

There’s a display on the clay models that are made, and a full size plastic model. We get to see the stamping process as a display.  Then we see the painting steps and then the bit that we’ve all been waiting for – the final assembly line. We’re not expecting much, but WOW.

Clay Model on Mazda factory tour

The Mazda Factory Japan Assembly Line

We get to spend around 20 minutes in the final assembly area.  There are no photos allowed to be taken here.  While it’s nowhere near long enough, it’s a lot longer than we were expecting. First of all, we are above the production line and we’re seeing cars move slowly below us, having boot liners and ceiling liners fitted. One worker isn’t happy with the fitting of the roof aerial and spends time calling over a supervisor and sorting it out.

Then we move on and we see the glue attached (by robots) to the windscreen and the rear windscreen. Then as we move (as slowly as possible) we can just see the windscreen being lowered in and pressed firmly onto the car.

We’re alongside a gorgeous dark blue colored MX5 that we’re seeing being put together as she slowly trundles along the line. We arrive at the end of this row and she’s lifted up by a hoist under the bodywork.  Four-wheel cradles slide under the wheels.  The hoist moves so that she’s sitting in the wheel cradles.  She turns the corner as we do, and hangs above another worker, who immediately takes to her underside.

The production line is for up to four different models of cars, so there are Mazda 3’s on here and our lonely, lovely MX5. The production line here is up to 1.2km long and a car can go from end to end in 15 hours.

Completed Cars at Mazda

We move on and see the buildings where up to 7,000 finished cars can be stored before they are loaded onto a ship sitting here at Mazda’s own port.  Cars are shipped domestically and around the world from here.  Then we head back down the stairs, to say goodbye to the MX5 and we head back into the museum area.

Here now, where we’re again allowed to take photos, as we weren’t either on the bus, or in the assembly line, we see the Takine concept car.  There’s also the dual fuel RX7, ready for gasoline or hydrogen, and a Mazda electric car.

Mazda concept cars of the future

Leaving Japan with Our Own Mazda

We have a final few minutes in the museum assembly area.  The groups of kids show off their English and wish us all a hearty ‘Hello”.  Finally, as we board the bus to return to Head Office we’re given our own Mazda car to assemble.

mazda hofu plant tour

We read that the mazda museum will be close from january 2020 to june2020 .We have a reservation to april. Will it be possible to go the tour to the factory without visiting the museum?

mazda hofu plant tour

I just read the update on their website and from that I’d say that the tours will be cancelled as well. I’ve also attempted to make a reservation and there is no availability for the time that they have indicated that the museum is closed, so I’m afraid it looks like it is all closed for that time. I’ll put an update on the article to let everyone know, thanks so much for bringing it to my attention!

Mazda Museum - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

Mazda Museum

mazda hofu plant tour

The Mazda Motor Corporation, founded in Hiroshima in 1920, retains its headquarters in the city of its origins. In addition to the headquarters, Mazda owns a large plot of coastal land which accommodates research and development laboratories, factories, and shipping facilities. The company museum and part of a factory are made available for public viewing.

Like Toyota to Nagoya , Mazda plays a large role in Hiroshima's economy. Although Mazda is not as large as Toyota, it still produces about a million vehicles a year and is an innovative player in the Japanese auto industry. For instance, in 1991 Mazda became the first Japanese company to win the Le Mans Grand Prix.

mazda hofu plant tour

To visit the Mazda Museum, reservations must be made online beforehand, as the facilities can be seen only on a guided tour. Tours for individual travelers are available twice per day, including one tour in English, and last about 90-120 minutes. Reservations can be made up to three months in advance.

Visitors to the museum first assemble at the Mazda head office building and sign in at the front desk. When the tour is scheduled to begin, a Mazda tour guide directs visitors onto a bus to take them to the museum building on the nearby grounds of Mazda's Hiroshima Plant.

The museum offers an overview of Mazda's history, a look into the technology of its automobiles and the prospects for its future developments. The tour then passes through an actual vehicle assembly line, where visitors can see a variety of different car models being produced. At the end of the tour there is a shop featuring Mazda goods.

Things To Do In Hofu City

Hofu, located on the Sanyo Honsen train line in the middle of Yamaguchi prefecture, is a small town with a couple of big attractions.

Hofu Tenmangu Shrine

The main shrine of Hofu Tenmangu Shrine

Foremost among them is the HouhuTenmangu Shrine, where students go to pray before taking their tests.

Hofu Tenmangu Shrine Ume Blossom

The shrine, together with Kitano Tenmangu (in Kyoto) and Dazaifu Tenmangu (in Fukuoka), is counted among Japan’s Three Greatest Tenmangu Shrines.

The approach to Hofu Tenmangu Shrine

Amidaji temple

Hofu is rich in history and has many ruins and other places of interest for those who enjoy seeing the relics of Japan’s bygone ages. One of these is the Amidaji temple.

Niomon of Suo Kokubunji Hofu

On either side of the gate of Amidaji stands Nio (the statue of a temple guard), which has been designated as an Important Cultural Asset. Amidaji is located in the beautiful natural surroundings and its precincts have been planted with 50 kinds of hydrangeas.

Mazda Factory

A strategically positioned port on the Seto Inland Sea, Hofu is also home to Mazda Motor Corporation’s newest automobile plant. While not exactly “traditional”, this plant is a marvel of Japanese technical engineering and can produce an entire vehicle per minute.

Townscape of Hofu City

Visitors can tour the plant, and seeing the robots put a car together in the blink of an eye is an experience that seems more out of a Terminator movie than real life. If you think that Japan is all samurai and geisha, this very modern facility will give you a glimpse of Japan as it is today.

Remodelling of Hofu plant enhances Mazda’s flexible production

Retooled H2 production line at Mazda’s Hofu plant can build multiple vehicle and engine types simultaneously on one production line

  • By Automotive World
  • October 29, 2021

On 6 October, Mazda Motor Corporation unveiled the newly remodelled H2 production line at the Hofu plant in south-western Japan. The H2 production line, which is currently manufacturing the Mazda6 and Mazda CX-5, has been upgraded to become capable of building models of the Large Product group, offering a variety of choices of electrified powertrains. This is made possible by an enhanced production system that will allow Mazda to adjust its production more easily to new models or shifting demands, making it the latest example of Mazda’s unique Monotsukuri innovation approach.

As a result of the remodelling, vehicles with different platforms (large or small), powertrains (internal combustion or electric) and engine layouts (vertical or transverse) can be produced on the same line in the future if needed. This mixed production approach is an important step towards fulfilling the brand’s plans going forward under Mazda’s unique multi-solution strategy. Mazda recently announced the expansion of its SUV line-up starting from 2022.

The heart of the remodelled assembly is a traverse dolly line. The system relies on “rootless” equipment, meaning that the plant does not use fixed conveyor belts or hangers. Instead, the vehicles are moved on palette platforms that are level with the ground and skate on dolly rollers. These can be arranged more flexibly than a fixed system – if demand increases, production capacity can easily be extended by adding more sections to the production line. The dolly system also allows workers to move around the platforms freely and perform whichever tasks are required for the vehicle type in front of them. Two automated guided vehicles (AGVs) that align themselves with the length of the vehicle being built at the current moment deliver the engine assembled with front suspension and rear suspension respectively, or the battery in the case of an electrified vehicle. “More than half of the facility is now arranged in such a non-fixed way,” explains Takeshi Mukai, Senior Managing Executive Officer at Mazda Motor Corporation.

The introduction of a new flexible module line (FML) in the welding shop will allow Mazda to minimize lead times and investment costs, especially when the company introduces new models into its line-up. “By introducing FML, instead of repeating the scrap-and-build process every time a new model is introduced, the only part that needs to be changed is the jig to fix the parts,” explains Takeshi Mukai.

While in the past it might have taken more time and considerable investment to retool a production line for a new vehicle type, thanks to the upgrades to both body shop and vehicle assembly line the same process can now be handled in approximately one-fifth of the time and at 10% of the investment cost compared to conventional systems.
