Many departments, classrooms, and labs radiate from the Infinite Corridor.

When navigating to campus, use the address for MIT’s main entrance, 77 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge . We recommend that you take public transportation or a taxi/rideshare service to campus.

Via public transportation

Boston’s public transportation system is the MBTA , known as “the T.”

Subway : Take the Red Line subway to the Kendall/MIT station or to the Central Square station. Kendall/MIT is the closest stop to the campus; the walk from Central Square takes about 10 minutes.

Bus : The #1 bus stops at MIT on Massachusetts Avenue and provides transportation between Harvard Square and Dudley Square (in Boston). The CT1 bus is similar to the #1 bus but has a shorter route and limited stops; it runs along Mass. Ave. from Central Square to Boston Medical Center.

Shuttle : The EZ Ride shuttle runs to and from Boston’s North Station, with stops at Kendall Square and around MIT’s campus (Note: EZRide is not operated by the MBTA; fare is $2 cash per trip).

From Logan Airport

Taxi or rideshare : Taxi fare from the airport is about $35–$40, and a rideshare service can range from about $20–$35. During non-rush hour, the ride will take about 15 minutes; during rush hour, it may take 30 minutes or more.

Subway : From any terminal at Logan Airport, take the Silver Line bus to South Station. At South Station, change to the Red Line subway to Kendall/MIT (inbound toward Alewife). The ride should take about 30 minutes.

Parking in Cambridge and Boston can be expensive and hard to find. Whenever possible, park your car at your hotel and use public transportation [link to public transportation above] or a taxi/rideshare service. If you must drive to the campus, on- and off-street parking is available for a fee, but most public parking is not very close to the center of campus. More parking information is available from Parkopedia .

  • Visiting prospective students may park in designated areas on a first-come, first-served basis.

We’ve heard there is life outside the lab. With its café, bookstores, and student community, Cambridge is often referred to as "Boston's Left Bank." Central Square is known for its international restaurants and music clubs, and Harvard Square for its bookstores and street performers. You'll find award-winning improv comedy in Inman Square . Kendall Square is home to MIT, and is the center of the high tech and biotechnology industries in Massachusetts. In North Cambridge, Porter Square boasts the region's largest concentration of Japanese eateries and shops, and in nearby Somerville, Davis Square hosts a vibrant arts community.

Have a question?

How do we know how much co2 was in the atmosphere hundreds of years ago, scientists extract tiny air bubbles from ice cores that date back thousands of years, and measure the amount of co 2 in those bubbles..

April 23, 2024

Starting in the 1950s, scientists began drilling deep into the ice sheets of Antarctica and Greenland to extract tubes of ice called ice cores. Like the rings of a tree, those ice cores contain distinct layers that each represent a year of snowfall. As snow accumulates, it slowly applies pressure to the older snow underneath. Eventually, that snow becomes ice, and the air pockets between snowflakes become isolated bubbles, shut off from other pockets of air.

Those bubbles contain “small amounts of ancient air,” says David McGee, an associate professor in the MIT Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences. Each bubble can be a tenth of a millimeter to one millimeter in diameter, and there are hundreds of them in every cubic centimeter of ice.

By crushing the ice to extract the air in those tiny pockets, and then testing them for the concentration of gases like carbon dioxide (CO 2 )—the main driver of global warming—scientists can understand what the atmosphere was like a very long time ago. Among other things, that information has helped scientists verify the cause of today’s climate change. Just as expected, ice core samples show that CO 2 levels have risen swiftly since the early 1800s, just as humans began burning large amounts of carbon-rich fossil fuels.

“We've been able to reconstruct carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere going back not just hundreds of years, but hundreds of thousands of years, to understand how carbon dioxide levels have changed through time, and how those changes have been related to changes in global temperature,” says McGee.

In the 1950s, scientists began directly measuring the CO 2 in the air. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration also measures CO 2 concentrations from space. Today, scientists can compare estimates from ice bubbles against those direct measurements. “We see very good agreement,” says McGee. “That gives us strong confidence that these reconstructions based upon the ice core air bubbles are accurate.” Scientists can also compare measurements across different ice cores, because, at this point, researchers have gathered so many.

Ice in Antarctica, which is purer and provides more accurate data than Greenland ice cores, can reach three kilometers in depth (almost two miles). Toward the top of this ice record, matching the year or period with the proper ice is simple, because the layers are quite visible, says McGee. But that becomes more complicated the deeper back in time you look, because the buildup of snow has compressed the ice below into extremely thin layers. At the top of an ice core, tens of centimeters may represent just a single year. Kilometers below the surface, a single centimeter may represent decades or even hundreds of years. In those cases, researchers can sometimes extract volcanic ash layers preserved in ice and estimate age based on the elements the ash contains. Scientists also use computer models to simulate how thin ice layers become over time, so they can estimate the years a certain depth may represent.

Today, scientists have analyzed continuous ice layers dating to about 800,000 years old: so long that they can use this data to study not only today’s human-caused climate change, but also earlier, natural cycles of warming and cooling. Now, says McGee, researchers are eager to find even older ice. In 2019, researchers recovered ice that they believe is more than 2 million years old, which could provide previously unknown details about the ancient climate. 1

“That's a very active area of research right now — trying to find the oldest ice that we can, because it's such a unique archive of ancient CO 2 ,” McGee says.

Thank you to S.V. Doshi of Bengaluru, India, for the question.

Eye Health 101: Things You Should Be Doing Every Day to Take Care of Your Vision

While you can't magically fix vision loss, you can take control of your eye health by implementing these simple habits in your routine.

Close-up of a brown eye.

Simple habits can boost your eye health.

Vision loss is a major problem that interrupts daily life. It's also more common than you think. The US  Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 93 million adults in the US are at high risk of vision loss. Although you can't always restore the vision loss you've experienced, it doesn't mean you can't take precautions to protect your eyes going forward.

These are the top habits to integrate into your routine to keep your eyes in good shape for the years ahead.

Health Tips logo

Want more health tips? Check out why  omega-3-rich foods offer benefits for your health , why your glasses get foggy and how to stop it  and the  right color of sunglasses for eye health .

1. Wear sunglasses

Exposing your eyes to ultraviolet rays may cause damage over time. Wearing sunglasses can block harmful UV light, lowering your risk of eye diseases like cataracts, sunburn, eye cancer and growths around the eye, per the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Polarized glasses with smoke or gray lenses may offer the best protection against the sun's rays and reduce glare.

2. Take screen breaks

Prolonged screen time can cause dry eyes , pain in the neck and shoulders, blurred vision, headaches and digital eye strain, or computer vision syndrome . The American Optometric Association recommends using the 20-20-20 rule to prevent computer vision syndrome. Every 20 minutes, look at something at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

3. Take book breaks, too

Screen time isn't the only way to strain your eyes. When you read a book, you probably hold it up close for long periods, too. Both activities can lead to nearsightedness , or myopia, which means far-away objects are blurry while up-close things are clear. Just like you should use the 20-20-20 rule to take screen breaks, you should also use this rule for book breaks. If you find yourself engrossed in what you're reading or doing on the computer, set an alarm so you don't miss your 20-minute break.

A woman holds her eyes in pain, glasses in hand.

4. Move your body

Regular exercise can provide eye health benefits , such as promoting healthy blood vessels and lowering your risk of developing glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy, the AAO reports. The CDC recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity every week, plus two days of strength training for your muscles. You can also practice eye exercises to reduce tension and eye strain while sitting at your desk.

Read more: Sneak More Exercise Into Your Daily Routine: 7 Steps That Actually Work

5. Get outside

Children and adults need to get outside often, even if you get your recommended exercise indoors. Research shows that children who spend time outdoors have a lower risk of developing nearsightedness in adolescence and as adults. Playing with your kids at the local playground, walking through the woods or even playing in the backyard can help the whole family stay healthy and active. Be sure to use your sunglasses.

6. Don't smoke

It's well known that smoking is bad for your health. It can also increase your risk of developing eye diseases like cataracts or age-related macular degeneration, according to the Food and Drug Administration . Smokers have a two or three-times higher chance of developing cataracts and up to four times higher risk for AMD. Future research may determine if smoking cigarettes can also cause glaucoma, Graves' eye disease, thyroid eye disease and encourage diabetic retinopathy onset or progression. To improve your health, build a quit plan .

7. Eat balanced meals

The foods you eat every day can improve your eye health . Eating foods rich in vitamins A, C and E, beta-carotene, omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, zeaxanthin and zinc can help cellular growth, lower eye tissue inflammation and limit free radicals that can damage your eyes.

To get the right nutrients for your eyes, eat balanced meals by including some of these foods in your regular diet, as recommended by the AAO:

  • Vitamin A and beta-carotene: Apricots, carrots, cantaloupe, sweet potatoes, red pepper, ricotta cheese, mango.
  • Vitamin C: Grapefruit, oranges, lemons, tangerines, peaches, strawberries, tomatoes, red bell pepper.
  • Vitamin E: Avocados, almonds, peanut butter, wheat germ, sunflower seeds.
  • Omega-3: Halibut, sardines, salmon, tuna, trout.
  • Lutein and Zeaxanthin: Collards, broccoli, eggs, peas, kale, spinach, romaine lettuce, turnip greens.
  • Zinc: Lima beans, kidney beans, black-eyed peas, lean red meats, oysters, fortified cereals, poultry.

8. Avoid rubbing your eyes

If you habitually rub your eyes, it could cause eye damage or infections . Dry eyes and eye strain can make you want to rub your eyes, and some may rub them too much or too hard. This can lead to issues such as reduced or blurry vision, headaches, inflammation, eye and light sensitivity. Another reason to avoid eye rubbing is that bacteria or viruses on your fingers or hands could lead to conjunctivitis, commonly called pink eye. Instead of rubbing your eyes, use eye drops or saline to clean your eyes and keep them moist. Resist the urge and find something else to keep your hands busy until you undo the habit.

9. Wash your hands

You should always wash your hands before touching your face or eyes and handling contact lenses. Almost 45 million Americans wear contact lenses  and around one in three wearers develop complications, with one in five infections from contact lenses causing corneal damage.

Plus, there's no telling what kind of germs are on objects you touch after someone unknowingly contaminated them. Washing your hands regularly can lower your risk of respiratory illness by up to 21% and diarrheal illness by up to 40%, the CDC reports.

10. Take off your makeup

After a long day, the last thing you might think about is removing your eye makeup before you get into bed. Doing so benefits your eye health and can lower your risk of blepharitis or eyelid inflammation, according to the Optometrists Network.

You should also adopt good makeup practices that can save your skin and eyes, such as only using products made for eyes, replacing your makeup often (especially after an eye infection), not applying eye makeup in the inner lids and never sharing eye makeup with someone else. If you use brushes or sponges to apply eye makeup, wash them regularly.

rwf guys gonna be so mad that this gets global release lmao They all want global release. How it works now is NA gets in first, streams the strats, then EU copies the strats to catch up

Comment by Flooderz

MoP remix is going to compete directly with the new Diablo 4 season, kinda cringe LoL at YOU if you're still playing D4 in 2024 :)))) wait until they release the expansion, then wait another 3 months to get Expansion at half the price THEN D4 gonna be worth it to be played... MAYBE.

Comment by minimaxir

WoW Remix goes live on May 16th and Diablo 4 Season 4 goes live on May 14th. This will be difficult.

Comment by ClownParrot

MoP remix is going to compete directly with the new Diablo 4 season, kinda cringe It's 1 week before Cata classic and 3 weeks into S4 too. Releasing everything around the same time is an interesting decision. Logically they should want to spread things out more.

Comment by Elazul01

How long would the Pandaria Remix be up for you guys think. Was pretty nice on PTR - looking forward to it. Since the start date matched the one in Alpha, then I believe it is mid-August for the end date as listed there, as well.

Comment by Xexji

But I want it NOW! But realistically, three and a half weeks from now Is better than I was dreading, and considering that it's lasting until August most likely? That's okay. I GUESS I can do Season 4 stuff for a few weeks then, hum de dum... :^)

Comment by Swiff690

WoW Remix goes live on May 16th and Diablo 4 Season 4 goes live on May 14th. This will be difficult. Not really. 2 days is more than enough time to realize d4 is still trash & you shouldn't have updated for the new season haha Mop remix >D4 whole game

ellen degeneres

Ellen DeGeneres returned to the comedy stage Wednesday night for the first set of her “Ellen’s Last Stand…Up Tour,” taking significant time to address controversy around her talk show that began with an internal investigation of poor working conditions on the show as reported in Buzzfeed .

Popular on Variety

Since the talk show’s conclusion, DeGeneres has kept a much lower profile. “Ellen’s Last Stand…Up Tour” represents her biggest entry into the public eye after two years, with shows planned through the coming months.

“For those of you keeping score, this is the second time I’ve been kicked out of show business. …Eventually they’re going to kick me out for a third time because I’m mean, old and gay,” DeGeneres told the crowd Wednesday night, referencing how her ’90s sitcom “Ellen” was cancelled after she publicly came out as gay. “It’s been such a toll on my ego and my self-esteem. There’s such extremes in this business, people either love you and idolize you or they hate you, and those people somehow are louder.”

A representative for DeGeneres did not immediately respond for comment.

Many airlines have 'stopover' programs that let travelers tour a city between connecting flights, and some will even pay for a hotel — here's how to book them

  • Many people intentionally book flights with long connections so they can explore the layover city.
  • Airlines capitalize on this trend with "stopover" programs, some even offering free hotels and food.
  • These stopovers benefit travelers, airlines, and the carrier's home country by boosting tourism.

Insider Today

A special segment of adventurous travelers will purposely book itineraries with long connections in layover cities just to leave the airport and explore for a few hours or days between flights.

Airlines have jumped on this growing trend with built-in "stopover" programs, which can come with free or discounted hotels, excursions, transportation, and food at the layover destination.

It's basically a vacation within a vacation.

Although it sounds too good to be true, stopovers benefit everyone involved. Travelers get more choices and don't have to be confined to an airport, airlines gain customers who may have otherwise chosen a nonstop option on a competitor, and the carrier's home country sees a boost in tourism.

Plus, the cheap or complimentary accommodations typically come at a small cost to airlines, thanks to partnerships with local hotels or tour companies.

Not all stopover programs are structured with an emphasis on tourism, though, as some were created simply to offer conveniences during long layovers. Still, they are a way to secure a free hotel and explore an extra city.

Here are 22 global airline stopover programs, each lasting anywhere from hours to months.

Many carriers allow stopovers to be added to a regular cash booking, but some are only available via award tickets . This means the flight was paid for using points/miles or a combination of points/miles and cash.

Air Canada has a stopover option built into its Aeroplan loyalty program. It allows customers booking award flights to add a stop on international journeys and explore practically any city the airline flies to outside the US and Canada.

The add-on costs 5,000 Aeroplan points each way and can only be booked if the stop is at least 24 hours, capping out at 45 days.

Air France/KLM

Air France and Dutch carrier KLM's Flying Blue loyalty program offers a stopover of 24 hours or more in a connecting city on either carrier or their airline partners.

The option is free to add to award tickets, and passengers can stay up to a year in the stopover city.

China Southern Airlines

China Southern Airlines offers a free one-night hotel stay for transfer passengers with connection times lasting between six and 30 hours, though there are some time and route restrictions.

Breakfast and transportation are included for eligible travelers.

Copa Airlines

Copa Airlines' Panama stopover program allows customers to spend anywhere from 24 hours to seven days in the nation's capital, Panama City, on their outbound or return trip.

The option is free for the first stopover, but a second stopover can cost up to $250 plus taxes. Copa offers discounted hotels and tours that can be booked via its stopover website.

Emirates allows a stopover in Dubai with the option to add discounted tours or hotel bookings to the itinerary via its website.

The UAE carrier also has a " Dubai Connect " program that gives passengers with layovers between 6 and 26 hours, depending on the cabin, a complimentary hotel, transfers, meals, and any needed visa.

Dubai Connect only triggers if the customer takes the next available flight. Essentially, you can't intentionally book a longer layover to quality for the free stopover hotel.

Ethiopian Airlines

Ethiopian Airlines' transit program gives customers flying via Addis Ababa a free hotel, transit visa, and transfers during layovers lasting between eight and 24 hours.

The hotel on the airline's website is the Ethiopian Skylight In-Terminal Hotel, located inside the airport.

Etihad Airways

Etihad Airways offers a stopover in its Abu Dhabi hub, which comes with an undisclosed discount at select three-star hotels for up to two nights.

Two and four-night stays can be booked at more luxurious four and five-star hotels at a 40% discount. The minimum stay is 24 hours.

Although Etihad's website says it is temporarily unavailable, the airline used to allow eligible travelers to use a so-called Transit Connect Package that provided a free hotel near the airport for layovers lasting 10 to 24 hours. It is unclear when or if the program is returning.

Fiji Airways

Fiji Airways offers a stopover program in Fiji for those traveling to and from Australia, New Zealand, and other South Pacific nations.

Hotels and activities like ziplining and beach resorts can be booked through the airline as part of the stopover package.

Finnair allows passengers to book 6, 12, or 24-hour layovers in Helsinki at no additional fare charge and outlines itinerary ideas and information on its website , like transportation, free walking tours, and restaurants.

Customers can book a hotel through the airline and earn Finnair Plus points.

Iberia customers can plan a stopover in Madrid to or from an international destination for one to six nights at no extra cost.

Discounts on hotels, excursions, and transfers in the Spanish capital are available through Iberia.

Icelandair offers a stopover option for one to seven days in its capital city of Reykjavik on transatlantic itineraries for no additional charge.

The airline offers itinerary help and assistance in booking excursions and tours. Hotels need to be booked separately.

Japan Airlines

Japan Airlines considers itself one of the "most stopover -friendly" carriers in the world.

The stopovers, which trigger at 24 hours, are not limited to JAL's hubs in Tokyo but can be enjoyed in places like Osaka and Kyoto using the airline's multi-city booking tool.

Latam Airlines

Latam Airlines offers stopovers for between one and three days on flights that connect in São Paulo, Brasilia, Fortaleza, Recife, Manaus, Curitiba, and Belem. Only international itineraries that connect in São Paulo.

Hotels and amenities can be booked via Latam, but the stopover booking is free.

Oman Air offers customizable stopover packages to give travelers time to explore the country's capital, Muscat, and beyond. An additional fare charge may be applicable, though the airline does not fly to the US.

Packages and a-la-carte options include discounted hotels for up to three nights, as well as organized tours, meals, and transfers.

Australian flag carrier Qantas offers its stopovers in a similar manner to JAL in that multi-city bookings can be manipulated to add extra days between flights in layover cities, like Bangkok, Osaka, or San Francisco.

This comes at no extra cost on eligible Qantas fares and can be used on its Oneworld partner airlines.

Qatar Airways

Qatar Airways' stopover program allows passengers with a minimum layover of 12 hours and up to 24 hours to choose from a list of deeply discounted four and five-star hotels. Certain flight itineraries allow for up to four nights.

Nightly hotel rates start at $14 per person for 1 night at four-star standard hotels, with premium five-star beach hotels starting at $30 per person for one night.

Royal Jordanian Airlines

Royal Jordanian Airlines' transit program gives economy and business-class travelers with at least eight and six-hour layovers, respectively, a free hotel room, meals, and transit, assuming certain fare conditions are met.

However, the connecting flight must be the earliest possible — meaning, similar to Emirates, passengers can't intentionally book a longer layover to be eligible for the complimentary perks.

Swiss International Air Lines

Swiss International Air Lines, or SWISS, has a multi-city stopover booking tool on its website that allows passengers to find itineraries with extra days in Switzerland.

The cost of hotels and other perks is on the customer, though.

Singapore Airlines

Singapore Airlines' stopover program is available via the multi-city tool, similar to other carriers, where travelers can add hotels, transfers, and activities. The stopover can last one to seven days.

Singapore also offers free transit tours to passengers with layover times between five and a half and 24 hours at Singapore's Changi Airport. It's first-come, first-serve and includes sightseeing around Singapore.

TAP Air Portugal

TAP Air Portugal allows customers to add a stopover in Lisbon or Porto between one and 10 days, offering discounts on hotels, food, and activities.

It also offers 25% off a domestic flight to a second Portuguese destination, like the Azores or Madeira islands, to take during the stopover.

Turkish Airlines

Turkish Airlines' stopover program gives economy travelers a one-night free hotel stay and business flyers a two-night free stay if the period between their connecting flights in Istanbul exceeds 20 hours.

Those traveling from the US in economy class can stay up to two nights in a four-star hotel, while those traveling in business can stay up to three nights in a five-star hotel.
