The History of Great Smoky Mountains Tennessee Moonshine

Did you know that moonshine has been around for centuries? It originated in Ireland and Scotland, where distilling and drinking whiskey were traditions. When immigrants from those Celtic countries arrived in the Appalachian Mountains, they used corn to make whiskey.

Decades later, the federal government passed a whiskey tax of $2 per gallon, which was a 20-cent increase that many people in the mountains simply couldn’t afford. As a result, they stopped paying the tax and continued to distill the whiskey.

They became known as “moonshiners,” a word that’s derived from the fact that they secretly made illegal whiskey in the mountains at night. That’s when this particular type of whiskey earned the name moonshine.

In the Great Smoky Mountains, moonshine distillation became a vital source of extra revenue for many farmers. Transforming the surplus corn into whiskey made it more viable and easier to move, trade, and sell. The money that they made helped them pay bills, start new businesses, and provide for their families.

A favorite distilling spot on the Tennessee side of the Smokies was the Forbidden Caverns because it was a remote location with a reliable water supply. You can see an old moonshine still while touring the caverns, which are in Sevierville less than one hour from Gatlinburg.

Famous Moonshiners

One infamous moonshiner was Lewis Redmond, a North Carolina native who became a legend after killing a deputy while trying to avoid arrest in 1876.

He evaded the law and shared his moonshine profits with area residents until he was arrested in 1881. Eventually, he was pardoned and worked in a South Carolina government-operated distillery.

However, the most famous moonshiner of recent history was Marvin Sutton, nicknamed Popcorn. His popularity grew after he appeared in various documentaries and released an autobiography — “Me and My Likker.”

In 2007, the federal government busted him, but he passed away before serving the sentence.

Rumor: In the 1920s, mob boss Al Capone is believed to have hidden his illicit spirits in the Great Smoky Mountains before moving them to Chicago.

Modern Moonshine Distilleries

It wasn’t until 2009 that Tennessee passed a state law that allowed moonshine distilleries to open in Gatlinburg and across the state, making it legal to make moonshine in Tennessee.

Ole Smoky Moonshine Distillery was the first in Gatlinburg. Since then, many wonderful moonshine Tennessee distilleries have popped up in the greater area, and tours have become popular.

The Process of Making Gatlinburg Moonshine

Traditionally, the term “moonshining” refers to making or smuggling illegal spirits under moonlight or at night. Now that it’s legal to make moonshine, Gatlinburg distilleries don’t have to operate in secret. Every distillery might use its own ingredients and processes, but the basics are nearly the same.

Essentially, moonshine consists of cornmeal, sugar, water, and yeast, and these ingredients go through two critically timed processes.

Fermentation is the first process, which involves using yeast to convert sugar into acids, alcohol, and gases. The resulting mixture is called the mash.

The second part of the moonshine making process is distillation, the fundamental steps for which include:

• Heat the mash to about 172 degrees Fahrenheit.
• Evaporate the alcohol, and collect the steam in a worm box (water-filled barrel or crate) through a pipe before it returns to its liquid form.
• Cool the alcohol vapor in the worm box, allowing it to condense back into a liquid.
• Filter the liquid from the worm box into a barrel or other container.

Initially, moonshine comes out of these processes as a clear liquid, which is when the flavor and alcohol are most potent.

The color changes after it ages for several months or years in charred oak barrels. In a lot of cases, distilleries add fruits — apples, cherries, peaches, strawberries — and other ingredients to produce a range of flavors of moonshine, which also change the color.

Tennessee Shine Company Reveals New Moonshine History Tour

Tennessee Shine Company is one of the newer moonshine companies to come to the Smoky Mountains. They first opened their doors in Wears Valley less than 10 years ago, but they are expanding quickly. At the newest location in Sevierville, you’ll find their moonshine and other liquors, as well as a moonshine history tour. About the Tour

What’s Along the Tour

The moonshine history tour at Tennessee Shine Company starts with a look at where people who distilled moonshine in the beginning lived. There is an old replica of a cabin porch and half of a real moonshine truck. In the bed of the truck, you’ll find a real moonshine still. The truck bed has a trapdoor where bootleggers would store moonshine to transport it. This will be a place where guests can take pictures if they want.

You’ll also get to learn about the original distilling process back when bootleggers would hide their stills in the forests of the Smokies. There will be replicas of stills, as well as a giant fake black bear that will occasionally growl at people. This represents some of the dangers of distilling in the woods, because the bears would smell the fruit and become curious, which was dangerous for the people making moonshine.

One of the last stops along the tour has a real Nascar Daytona 500 car decked out with the Tennessee Shine Company logo. You’ll learn more about their roll with the driver and Nascar.

We start by meeting under a covered pavilion to get checked in. After we give an informative overview and history of “Appalachia” wine/shine we will begin our tour. We will see working distilleries. You will have the opportunity to go behind the scenes and see exactly how their process works.

After a short walk, we start off at an AMAZING distillery where we will taste a custom lineup just for us!

At our next location we will get a true VIP experience at our favorite winery. Just remember...Tennessee does SWEET wines perfect

We will take a short breather and talk history of the moonshine old timers. Even during the busiest times of the year this walk is beautiful and scenic and very few people even know it’s here.

Once we arrive at our shine spot we get the full "VIP experience". After check-in, we will show you around the distillery and head to the back for a homemade cocktail from spirits made right there on site!  You will see a real working distillery and be able to ask any questions you have.

Brian St. Clair and Brother Eric started a moonshine distillery in the fall of 2015. They decided to turn back the clock to the prohibition era and produce corn liquor just like the bootleggers of that era. The St. Clair's produce a smooth tasting shine that satisfies even non-drinkers. The distillery boosts several original copper pot stills as well as other museum pieces on display. Walk back in time with artifacts from the St. Clair's 1800's farm. The St. Clair boys even salvaged an old grain bin that was their club house growing up. That "club house" is now a dividing wall that separates the retail room from the work area.

Storyteller Glenn Rawson leads tour exploring history of cowboys, early pioneers

CONTRIBUTED CONTENT — If you have a thirst for pioneer and cowboy stories, Utah-based Southwest Adventure Tours wants you to learn about those events in the places where they occurred. And the man leading the tour is Glenn Rawson, an inspiring storyteller who has devoted his life to learning everything there is to know about the American West.

Rawson is host of the small-group Great American West & Cowboy Tour July 25-Aug. 1, complete with stories, insights and fun stops.

You might know Rawson from his TV series “History of the Saints” that broadcasts after “Music and The Spoken Word” on Sundays, or from his books, podcast or Facebook Live events .

You might not know Rawson grew up as a cowboy in Idaho, so he is familiar with the area and the lifestyle of early Western settlers. His enthusiasm and sense of humor are what make him a gifted and popular storyteller.

The Great American West & Cowboy Tour is an eight-day adventure that explores many of the most historic settings of the early West. It includes the following highlights:

• Jackson, Wyoming.
• Grand Teton National Park.
• Float trip on the Snake River.
• Wildlife watching.
• Yellowstone National Park.
• Old Faithful Geyser.
• Cody, Wyoming.
• Devil’s Tower.
• Mt. Rushmore.

• Wildlife Jeep safari.
• Oregon Trail.
• Fort Laramie National Historic Site.

Visiting each of these sites is a profound opportunity, enhanced by learning about the history and the lives of the people who settled and passed through the area. What to expect

If you’ve never been on one of Rawson’s tours before, don’t stress. His tours are designed to be more intimate, with a smaller group on a modern, luxury tour bus. There will be plenty of stories, jokes, laughter and an overall comfortable and friendly dynamic to enjoy.

“The time of the great American cowboy was brief – only from about the end of the Civil War to the mid-1880s, and yet they wrote history large and bold,” Rawson said. “And while there may have only been about 40,000 trail cowboys in history, millions today look back on them with respect and awe. Seldom have so few left boots so big to fill.”

Included are seven nights of hotel accommodations, seven breakfasts, four lunches, three dinners, a scenic float trip on the Snake River and a wildlife Jeep safari in Custer State Park. Topics of the tour

Stories of the American West are plentiful and always interesting. Just some of the topics that Rawson will cover over the eight-day tour from Salt Lake City to the Black Hills and back again include how the West was won, how it came to be and the evolution of the West’s history from its beginning to the present day.

Rawson will also go into greater detail on Native American tribes and the first Europeans who came across and explored the West. He will explain the history of Protestant missionaries in the area, the development of the Oregon Trail, how Salt Lake City originated and how it became the city it is now.

In addition to engaging stories and history, Rawson plans on bringing plenty of his personal cowboy experience with him for a little fun. He’ll be bringing his saddle, bullwhip and other Western trappings along for the ride. You’ll even attend a rodeo along the way.

7 Detroit tours that tell a deeper story of the city: What to know

A s a little boy, about 8 years old with his brown hair spiked in the late ‘90s style, Gabriel Gutierrez would take his brother’s hand and cross the street from his parents’ tortilla business, enter a heavenly smelling donut shop, pass the lively store patrons, and order a coffee for his mom or their employees.

For himself, he’d order a white cream Long John, somewhat like an éclair, just to eat the cream.

These days, Gutierrez owns that hand-cut donut shop, Donut Villa, in southwest Detroit, which has ties not only to his personal history but that of his family, whose first southwest Detroit business opened in the 1940s. It is part of the greater fabric of community histories that make up Detroit’s story, as told by the City Institute on one of their "Detroit in Context Learning Journey" tours.

The City Institute is one of a number of organizations to offer tours that go a bit deeper than sightseeing and basic headlines in Detroit. The groups seek to give context to where Detroit is now, where it is going, and often to correct the record on where it’s been.

Some tours explore the once prominent Black Bottom neighborhood, some explore Detroit’s history with the Underground Railroad, some explore Corktown, and ones like the City Institute’s "Learning Journey" also bring the city’s story forward to today and look to the future.

Though not a definitive list of all the tours in Detroit, here are some tour groups and guides to help deepen your knowledge:

City Institute

The "Learning Journey," on which Gutierrez’s business was featured , is a yearly, all-day bus tour that goes neighborhood by neighborhood so that attendees can hear from business owners, investors, and nonprofit and city leaders on the history of the neighborhoods, what’s currently offered there, how it supports itself, and future projects. A shorter version of the tour is also offered, primarily for private tour groups.

The City Institute’s mission is to equip residents and stakeholders to build an inclusive, equitable and thriving future for Detroit. Southwest, with its shifting demographics over the last century, is just one neighborhood that can serve as a foundation for those seeking to understand the city a bit better, said Gutierrez.

“There's a lot of history and a lot of stories,” Gutierrez said of the city. “Not always great, right? And for people to just understand that the communities that they are involved with, they have extensive roots and histories of their own that can provide context.”

Learning the city’s wins also encourages retention and keeps energy to fight for Detroit’s future, by the telling of Jeanette Pierce, founder and president of the City Institute.

“We believe it's important for people to understand how we got to where we are … then come to today, where we actually meet and hear about and talk to people doing amazing work in the city,” said Pierce.

Black Scroll Network History & Tours

Jamon Jordan, Detroit’s first official historian, was appointed to his role in 2021 by Mayor Mike Duggan. Before that, however, he was already known as a prominent unofficial historian of the city, founding the Black Scroll Network History & Tours.

While Jordan said he encourages folks to do the tours that exist on restaurants, bars, the auto industry and the like, he said he realized they were leaving out a big part of the Detroit story – African American history.

On his various tours, Jordan may point out the neighborhood where three Detroit music legends grew up or talk about the presence of Black people in the region in 1700s. Some tours also explore the once thriving Black neighborhood and business district that were destroyed through racist officials, urban renewal and highway building , with Jordan pointing out the still present apartments, townhouses and school building that were given the space instead.

“A big portion of Detroit’s history is invisible, and you have to have someone help you see what is no longer present,” he said.

Wheelhouse Detroit

Another way to get a deeper knowledge of the city? By bike.

Wheelhouse Detroit is a bike shop along Detroit’s riverfront, but tours have been a part of its mission since its opening in 2008 thanks to owner Kelli Kavanaugh and her founding partner’s backgrounds in community development.

“It was important for us to tell a story of Detroit that isn’t necessarily the one that the masses hear or understand to be true,” she said, later adding: “We’re not cheerleaders, we’re trying to tell a real story of a very interesting and complicated city.”

This story includes discussion of history and current developments. On the Corktown tour she gives, Kavanaugh delves into how freeway development, urban renewal, and parking for Tiger Stadium shaped the neighborhood as it is now, along with gentrification there. She also uses history to counter any belief that it only got “cool” now.

Ken Coleman

As a Detroit historian, journalist and communications professional, Ken Coleman likes to say he’s been dedicated to chronicling Black life in Detroit since 1991.

His extensive historical knowledge goes back way further, of course, and it’s his passion to share Black history as an independent tour guide, covering whatever topics in that area a client may want.

Some favorite stops include the Gateway to Freedom International Memorial along the Detroit riverfront which pays homage to those who used and were involved in the Underground Railroad . There’s also the Second Baptist Church of Detroit, which lays claim to being the oldest religious institution owned by the Black community in the Midwest, a former station on the Underground Railroad and establishing the city’s first school for Black children.

• Cost: Prices starting at about $50 per hour per small group, and generally $300-$500 for a 3-4 hour tour for a larger organization

Preservation Detroit

Preservation Detroit was founded in 1975 as a student organization fighting the demolition of historic campus buildings at Wayne State University. These days the group works to preserve historic sites throughout Detroit, and it hosts tours on the history of architecture, sculptures and more to educate the masses.

A high point of downtown tour coordinator Davis Zaleski’s walking excursion is a visit to the Guardian Building, the 1920s, cathedral-like, Art Deco skyscraper. There’s also a quick stop by the recently reopened 38-story, Italian Renaissance-style Book Tower.

“During the early part of the 20th century, with the advent of the auto industry and all the other industries, they built like crazy and they built some of the most beautiful buildings in the country,” Zaleski said.

Some of that history has been torn down or poorly developed, but preservation has increased over the years, Zaleski said. Preservation Detroit likes to emphasize good development, and Zaleski said he hopes attendees walk away with an appreciation for what Detroit was and could be.

Detroit History Tours

Detroit History Tours, along with the Detroit History Club, serves several purposes, said Bailey Sisoy-Moore, executive director of the two. Key among its motivations are the ideas that Detroit’s history should be written by Detroiters and that it’s hard to defund or vote to implode historic sites that are fully understood.

“History education helps make sure that the important parts of our history don't disappear quietly,” Sisoy-Moore said.

The tour group tells the history of the city starting with the Native American tribes that were here first through to present day and even future development plans.

• Cost: $27 for walking tours, $30-$65 for bus tours, $5 - $20 for self-guided mobile app tours with lifetime download; food tours are $80 - $120, including the meals and tips. Detroit Historical Society

Founded in 1921, the Detroit Historical Society now boasts tours at not only the Detroit Historical Museum and the Dossin Great Lakes Museum, but also at locations throughout metro Detroit.

Guided tours at the historical museum take groups of 15 or more people through the indigenous populations that were here, auto history, culture and more, said Kimmie Dobos, manager of education and public programs. There are also tailored museum tours that dive deeper into the African American experience and what led to the 1967 rebellion.

The Great Lakes museum, on Belle Isle, also features a maritime history tour exploring Detroit’s long history on the water from canoes to freighters and more.

For some off-site explorations, there are “Behind The Scenes” tours of historic locations including neighborhoods, a gallery, and a battlefield.

• Cost: Guided tours at the museums are $11 for adults and $10 for seniors, the 1967 rebellion tour is $12 for adults and $11 for seniors, and the “Detroit’s African American Perspectives” tour with Jamon Jordan is $300 for up to 20 people.“Behind The Scenes” tours are $25 for members and $35 for nonmembers.

Of course, these are just some of the tour offerings in the city. You also can see the sights with a Segway tour , by boat and there’s even a tour to learn some Detroit history on a historic bar tour , among others.

Bay City’s historic clock tower, a popular spot for tours, closed for renovations

BAY CITY, MI – Bay City’s historic clock tower is getting a much-needed makeover and will be closed to the public for a few months while the work is underway.

City officials shared news of the clock tower closure this week.

“Starting today, the clock tower will be closed for a period of time while we give it a well-deserved update,” read a post on the Bay City Government Facebook page . “We’re excited to revitalize this iconic piece of our city’s history, but it means you won’t be able to access it for a while.”

Bay City Manager Dana Muscott said the clock tower was previously open to the public for self-guided or museum-guided tours Monday through Friday.

“We have hundreds of visitors a year that come and tour City Hall and end up going up to the clock tower as well,” Muscott said. “It’s open to everybody to visit and see the views of our city. People can go up there on their own and take a look.”

The 185-foot clock tower is part of the 1896 City Hall building at 301 Washington Ave. To see the breathtaking cityscape view atop the tower, visitors climb a three-story wooden and spiral staircase. It’s a sight for both residents and visitors alike, and part of the variety of guided tours hosted by The Bay County Historical Society . As part of the City Hall tour , guests can learn the history of the building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and climb the clock tower.

Muscott said the clock tower will be closed for approximately two to three months for the work, which will include flooring, plaster, dry wall repairs, and fresh paint. The project is estimated to cost $23,600, plus flooring costs, which has yet to be determined, she said.

“It’s just going to have a whole new facelift up there,” Muscott said.

Local News | Oberlin Heritage Center offering range of tours during Oberlin College’s commencement weekend

“Commencement weekend has always been a very special part of town and college life in Oberlin,” said Amanda Manahan, museum education and tour coordinator for the Oberlin Heritage Center. “It’s one of the more vibrant weekends, so we enjoy participating in that.”

One of the ways people can participate is a self-guided tablet tour.

A person can check out a tablet that takes them on the Oberlin Heritage Center’s “Picture the Past: Downtown Oberlin or Freedom’s Friends: Abolition & the Underground Railroad” tour.

“We’ve had the outdoor tablet tours for a few years now, and people can come check one out and explore the community at their own leisure,” Manahan said.

Visitors also can take a self-guided tour of the Heritage Center’s Monroe House if they are unable to attend a guided tour, she said.

“For the self-guided Monroe House tours, we know families might not have the time to join us for a full tour or history walk, so we wanted a way for them to access this history in a way that is more convenient to them,” Manahan said.

The guided tours range from 45 to 90 minutes, but there is limited space.

Those tours include Underground Railroad, architecture, civil rights and Oberlin’s origin history themed walks and a tour of the Heritage Center’s Jewett House.

Manahan said the stories in these programs highlight Oberlin’s significant relevance in American history.

“Oberlin history is national history,” she said. “Oberlin has both influenced and reflected what has happened in the United States in the 19th and 20th century.

“We use that history to explore broader American history.”

Manahan said the commencement weekend programs also provide a good opportunity for graduating students and their families to learn about Oberlin.

“It’s nice to recognize where the students’ education fits into the history,” she said. “We hear all the time from alumni who went to Oberlin College, ‘I wish I knew this before I left Oberlin.’

“They might come visit later, but never came here as a student.”

Horse racing enthusiasts can see picturesque sunrises at Pimlico Race Course this week.

In a few days, the stands will be filled with people for the 149th Preakness Stakes. And, from 6-9 a.m. Tuesday through Friday, visitors to Pimlico can take a tour of the historic grounds.

The Sunrise Tours begin where the races start at the oldest electric gate in horse racing. Electric gates have been used at Pimlico since 1940.

As the tour continues, attendees can hear the voice of the races, while the groom of the year, Damon Gladden, explains the tender nature of caring for racehorses.

"Every morning, we check the horses and make sure they've eaten that night, that they're sound, they don't have any leg problems and they're healthy," Gladden said.

Gladden has been working with horses since he was 15 and is in awe of the crowds that the Preakness Stakes brings to Baltimore annually.

"It's good to see people come back and make racing what racing used to be," Gladden said.

Over at the track, horses can be seen taking their morning stroll. Sebastian, 9, and his brother, Beckett, enjoyed every moment.

"The sunrise was really beautiful so far, and I learned a lot about horses," Sebastian said. "If you really like horses and animals and races, I think yes, (people should go on the tour)."

The youngest attendees were able to catch a glimpse of Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan .

Fran Burns, who heads the Sunrise Tours, said she always looks forward to the opportunity to expose the youngest and the more seasoned attendees about the beautiful horses, especially as time winds down at Pimlico .

"We'll have Preakness here for 150 years and then, it will go to Laurel for a couple of years while they do the rebuild. We're going to miss the old girl, but she's got a little wear and tear on her," Burns said.
