Sorting out payment with credit cards

I had an issue with my credit cards, so used your help function, emailed and then spoke to your London office to find out there had been problems with your website accepting certain cards. I resolved by using my bank debit card and the transaction went through and the funds were transmitted last week. This is a very significant event for me, a life-long follower and spectator of F1. My daughter is with me for her very first live F1 race and our first time in Monaco. We have tickets in Granstand K: Bureau de Tabac and we had the opportunity on your site to request we sit in the higher up rows. I was also hoping we could be located at either end section so we have more view of the track either side of the left sweeper itself. Best Regards Charles

Motorsport reminded me when tickets were available, although all of the covered grandstand at Mugello were all sold out even though I logged in as soon as I got the email. I wish there was a little more on the site explaining the pros and cons of each stand with visuals of the view from the stand. I found it on Google and it was really helpful.

Date of experience : December 21, 2023

Hi David, Thank you for your feedback! Unfortunately tickets sell out really quickly even when just going on sale due to a high demand. The location of each grandstand is located in the map. However I have forwarded this internally to review the details available. Kind Regards, Customer Service Team

Problem solved!

Ten days out from the Monza GP I sent a rather terse email asking how MT planned to resolve the matter of my tickets having yet to arrive. Amy at MT responded promptly and informed me the tickets were sent a few months ago, to check my junk mail, and she resent the tickets as well. Her response was very polite and respectful. The tickets had been in my junk mail all along and I let her know I'd found them and apologized for my earlier tone to which she graciously responded. Prompt, efficient, polite and professional would be the words I would apply to MT based on my experience with them.

Easier process than in 2021. Customer service was excellent. My concerns and queries were addressed extremely well and special thanks to Liliana. The only issue we had was that our allocated tickets were in the Max Verstappen fanzone grandstand. None of us are Max fans 🤪 😅.

Won't answer a simple question

Although they reply politely to all emails, they just won't answer a simple question Have been told tickets are not released for the event until 2-4 weeks before, yet everyone else I know has received tickets already (4 months before event) How hard would it be give the reason for this discrepancy ? They are not telling the truth when they say the circuit doesn't release tickets till 2-4 weeks beforehand.

Hi Dave, I am sorry to hear you weren't helped sufficiently, could you please contact us at  [email protected] and we will clarify the issue at hand.  Thank you.

First time ticket purchase

The purchasing process was quick and easy, so that was a good start. I have only received a confirmation and nothing else. I sure wish they would email me our e-tickets, so I can at least have proof of purchase and guaranteed seats. I have to reserve my opinion until I have attended the race (hopefully) and then I can give an honest opinion and review. It's our first ever MotoGP race and we hope that all goes well, as we are coming from Canada. I remain optimistic . Notice: As a follow up review, I must give Motorsports Tickets a 5 star review. We received our tickets by email in a timely manner before the race. We have never been to the Autodromo Algarve and had no idea what to expect from a seating perspective. We were so pleasantly surprised at the location of the seats. The absolute best seats, top row and directly infront of the big screen. Thank you MT and we would never hesitate to use them again. Keep on Racing !!!

10 Most Affordable Tropical Destinations to Visit Around the World, According to Travel Experts

Warm, sunny places that won’t drain your entire vacation budget.

Lindsay Cohn is a writer, editor, and avid traveler who has visited 45 countries across six continents — and counting. She contributes to Travel + Leisure, Hotels Above Par, InsideHook, Well+Good, The Zoe Report, and more.

motorsport travel destinations reviews

Adrian Rudd/Travel + Leisure

Nothing says vacation quite like jetting off to a tropical destination with sunshine and beautiful beaches or rain forests and perhaps some dramatic mountains. Travelers can post up on the sand and enjoy midday naps under the shade of a palm tree, or take in the melodic soundtrack of jungle creatures. Of course, it's not all lazy days and nights, unless that's your preference.

Many torrid travel spots are ripe with adventure, from snorkeling excursions to ATV tours to zip lining. Culture and fresh, local cuisine also come with the territory. And while equatorial hot spots like St. Barts, the Maldives, and Bora Bora command a high price, it’s certainly not necessary to break the bank on a steamy escape. Prefer to save than splurge? You’re in good company. According to a recent Vacasa survey, 84 percent of travelers are shifting their plans to be more budget-conscious.

Lush landscapes, reasonable rates, and frame-worthy photo ops lie ahead at these affordable tropical destinations, from Costa Rica to Vietnam.

Mérida, Mexico

Itzel Garrido/Travel + Leisure

Mérida , the capital of Mexico's Yucatan state, is one of the country's most underrated cultural hubs. “Surge tourism-related pricing hasn't arrived yet, as it’s often overlooked by travelers in favor of beachside resort meccas such as Cancun and Tulum ,” says Brandon Berkson, CEO of Hotels Above Par . Days unfold while ambling about the historic downtown, stocking up on affordable souvenirs at design-forward shops, and savoring regional dishes such as cochinita pibil at economical Yucatec restaurants. “If you’re looking for a boutique hotel in Merida that doesn't break the bank, Wayam Mundo Imperial is the move, with suites ringing in at under $175 a night.”

Ubud, Bali, Indonesia

Daniel Gorostieta/Travel + Leisure

Bali might require a long travel day and some pricier plane tickets, but the Island of the Gods offers travelers superb value. The budget-conscious crowd should consider the upland town of Ubud in particular, a bastion of traditional culture and lush scenery with more wallet-friendly rates than along the coast. You can spend the day palling around with cute primates at the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary for just $5. The surrounding landscape brims with rain forests and terraced rice paddies. Food from local warungs and accommodations are inexpensive as well. If you want to splurge, the top-rated Adiwana Unagi Suites is still around $150 a night.

Negril, Jamaica

Molly Aaker/Getty Images

The westernmost town in Jamaica, Negril — a.k.a. the Capital of Casual — offers sandy beaches, turquoise water, friendly locals, and a laid-back vibe. This relaxing paradise also won’t put stress on your wallet. Seven Mile Beach is dotted with affordable and delicious local beach shacks. “There are several great boutique properties — notably Skylark Negril Beach Resort , a member of Design Hotels — with rates under $200,” says Chelsea Bicknese, a travel advisor at Fora . “Rick's Cafe does a bar special that’s five Red Stripes and five shots for $25. Split between friends, it’s only a few bucks each.”

Phú Quốc, Vietnam

Qui Thinh Tran/Getty Images

Admittedly, getting to Phú Quốc, a Vietnamese island off the coast of Cambodia, does require connecting flights and higher airfare costs than most places on this list, but don’t let that be a deterrent. Once you arrive at this slice of paradise, it’s an incredible value. Rooms at the top-rated Mövenpick Villas & Residences Phú Quốc start at just $75. The night markets in Dương Đông overflow with cheap and delicious eats. And, of course, catching rays on the white-sand beaches and hiking through Phú Quốc National Park are free.

Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica

While the beach resorts in Santa Teresa and Peninsula Papagayo may fetch high price tags, that’s certainly not the case across all of Costa Rica. Off-the-beaten-path Manuel Antonio — the area including and surrounding seven-square-mile Manuel Antonio National Park — is a bastion of biodiversity with rain forests, pristine white-sand beaches , coral reefs for snorkeling, and diverse wildlife, including three-toed sloths and white-faced capuchin monkeys. Its remote location keeps the prices down. Many of the hotels cost around $100 a night, and eco-tours are fairy reasonable as well.

Madeira, Portugal

Marco Bottigelli/Getty Images

Madeira is an adventure lover's paradise with cinematic scenery and eco-tourism opportunities galore. Its lush forests, black-sand beaches, natural lava pools, and towering mountains with idyllic viewpoints like Lombo dos Palheiros are just a few of the scenic highlights. “In downtown Funchal, many star attractions, including Mercado dos Lavradores and Livraria Esperanca, are free,” says Berkson. Entry to the flower-studded Monte Palace Tropical Garden costs about $13.50. “Right across from the sea and within walking distance of everything, Next hotel is a wallet-friendly stay with rates around $150 a night.”

San Juan, Puerto Rico

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

“For travelers looking for an easy and affordable beach vacation, Puerto Rico supplies some of the most reasonable direct flights from the United States — with tickets starting at $129,” says Laura Lindsay, travel trends expert at Skyscanner . Besides low-cost outdoor activities like stretching out on the sun-splashed shores and trekking through tropical rain forests a short drive away, head to the historic district of Old San Juan to experience local culture. It’s free to wander around and snap photos of the colorful buildings. Admission to Castillo San Felipe del Morro, the imposing 16th-century fortress and citadel, is just $10 for adults and free for kids under age 15.

Puebla, Mexico

Kryssia Campos/Getty Images

“Featuring a subtropical highland climate, the central Mexican city of Puebla remains one of Mexico’s best-kept secrets,” says Berkson. The city is teeming with affordable activities — from checking out the art galleries, colorful facades, and handicrafts along Callejón de Los Sapos and admiring the well-tailored architecture of the historic library Biblioteca Palafoxiana, Catedral de Puebla, and the ornate 17th-century Capilla del Rosario to stocking up on handmade pottery and feasting on delicious local dishes. “You can often book my favorite stay, Banyan Tree Puebla , for under $200 a night.”

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic

pawel.gaul/Getty Images

Droves of sunseekers flock to the all-inclusive resorts in Punta Cana . Far fewer realize the deals that await in Santo Domingo. Round-trip flights as low as $286 leave plenty of vacation budget for lodging, food, and entertainment — not that any of those things will set you back much in the commercial and cultural capital of the Dominican Republic. After lounging on the sandy beaches, take a tram tour of Jardin Botánico Nacional, eat your way through Mercado Modelo for cheap, and visit the famous Basilica Cathedral of Santa Maria la Menor. And be sure to do a day trip to Parque Nacional Los Tres Ojos.

LucBrousseau/Getty Images

In comparison to nearby St. Martin or even Anguilla , St. Kitts flies under the radar. However, it’s deserving of your vacation days and hard-earned dollars — both of which will go far on the 18-mile-long island that’s known for its Atlantic and Caribbean beaches, lush rain forests, and candy-colored buildings in the capital, Basseterre. In November, JetBlue launched nonstop flights from New York (JFK) to St. Kitts (SKB) with one-way tickets starting at $183. But it's not just getting there that’s easy on the wallet; you can snag a room at St. Kitts Marriott Resort & The Royal Beach Casino for just $218.

10 fast-growing summer vacation spots in 2024—according to tripadvisor.

An aerial view of the Lighthouse in Maunabo, Puerto Rico

Looking to collect a new stamp in your passport this summer? The most popular international vacation destinations for U.S. travelers in summer 2024 include familiar beach locations like Cancun and Cabo San Lucas in Mexico as well as Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic, according to Tripadvisor’s new summer travel index . The sunny hot spots are joined by European mainstays like London and Paris, the host of the 2024 Summer Olympics.

But Tripadvisor also revealed which international summer travel destinations are seeing notable year-over-year growth, and, according to the travel site, the Maldives and Peru plus some lesser-known, remote spots are poised to be summer vacation “it” destinations in 2024.

This year’s summer travel season is shaping up to be big, according to Tripadvisor’s survey of American travelers. Nearly all respondents (92%) said they plan to spend at least the same amount on travel as last summer, while more than half said they’ll shell out more on this summer’s trips than those they took last year. Forty-four percent say they plan to take more trips and 55% say they plan to travel for longer. Summer travelers are also planning to go further this year, with 44% saying they’ll travel more than 7 hours to reach their vacation destination, according to Tripadvisor.

If you need some summer trip ideas, here are 10 international destinations that Tripadvisor pinpointed as trending for 2024:

No. 1: Maunabo, Puerto Rico

Maunabo, Puerto Rico

Forested mountains meet the Caribbean coastline in this stretch of southeast Puerto Rico, where tourists can immerse in nature at the Punta Tuna Wetlands Nature Reserve and visit the Punta Tuna Lighthouse that was built by the Spanish in 1892.

Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria

Located on the Spanish island of Gran Canaria, Puerto Rico’s beaches and clifftop hotels are a draw. But the Angry Birds-themed amusement park is the main attraction for kids.

No. 3: Playa Avellana, Costa Rica

View of beautiful Avellanas Beach in Guanacaste, Costa Rica (Playa Avellanas)

The surf breaks here beckon expert surfers, but newbies can take lessons on the gentler waves nearby in Tamarindo.

No. 4: Cusco, Peru

Cusco, Peru.

Cusco is a jumping off point for visiting Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley, and Rainbow Mountain, but it also charms travelers with its historic plazas, markets and museums.

No. 5: Iru-fushi, Maldives

Sun Siyam Iru Fushi

Iru Fushi translates to “sun island” and the 52-acre patch of soft sand is home to Sun Siyam Iru Fushi , a luxury resort with overwater villas and 14 restaurants and bars.

No. 6: St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands

Cruz Bay, St John, United States Virgin Islands.

You don’t need a passport to visit this “international” destination in the Caribbean. St. John is the smallest of the tree U.S. Virgin Islands. It’s also home to Trunk Bay, which was just named the best beach in the world in 2024, according to World’s Best Beaches.

No. 7: Aguas Calientes, Peru

View of Aguas Calientes city, near Machu Picchu, Peru.

Travelers arrive to Aguas Caliente by train, and most are here to visit Machu Picchu, though the town is also famous for its hot springs.

No. 8: Malé, Maldives

Maldivian capital Male view from above

While much of Maldives will make you feel like you have the island to yourself, Malé is the densely populated capitol, and is home to the National Museum, a bridge that links it to the airport island of Hulhule, and a coral stone Old Friday Mosque that dates back to 1656.

No. 9: Fasmendhoo, Maldives

Emerald Maldives Resort & Spa

Arrive by seaplane to Emerald Maldives Resort & Spa , which is spread out on Fasmendhoo, a small island on Raa Atoll. The 114-villa resort has a dive center, wedding chapel, spa, kid’s club, and more.

No. 10: Andros, Bahamas

Peaceful sunset at the island of Andros, Bahamas

While it’s the largest island in The Bahamas, Andros feels remote. Visitors come here for superlative scuba diving and deep-sea fishing.

As you start planning your next trip abroad, looking into hotels, flights and tourist attractions, don't forget that the key to a smooth travel experience is a great piece of luggage. When you're traveling internationally, it's especially important to bring a suitcase that complies with airline restrictions, is comfortable to carry or roll throughout your journey and has plenty of room for all of your belongings and your souvenirs for the trip home.

This top-performing suitcase from our best overall luggage brand Samsonite has repeatedly stood out in the Textiles Lab's and our consumers' tests and is priced under $200 — an incredible value. The hardside carry-on is made of polypropylene and weighs in at just 6.5 pounds, which is one of the lightest bags we've tested, so it won't eat too much into the lower weight restrictions set by many international airlines.

I was impressed by how easy it was to lift and roll the bag around, even when filled with our standard packing load. Despite the lightweight design, this carry-on is spacious with a butterfly-opening, unfolding into two primary compartments for easy packing, and there's an additional one inch of expandable storage with the pull of a zipper.

During our Lab evaluations, we liked how easy it was to pull the bag through our luggage obstacle course. While some testers said the telescopic handle felt a bit loose, the suitcase earned high scores for maneuverability, with testers sharing feedback including "very smooth rolling" and "the wheels moved really well." The material was more prone to scratching than some others we evaluated, but the suitcase proved to be durable overall in our drop tests, resisting major damage.

Listed dimensions: 21.25" x 15.25" x 10" | Weight: 6.5 lbs | Material: Hardside polypropylene | Expandable: Yes | Returns: Within 30 days, unused

With more than 34,000 five-star ratings, t his best-selling suitcase from Amazon Basics is loved by both real users and our consumer testers who say it's worth every penny. Made of lightweight ABS plastic, the hardside suitcase isn't quite as durable as those made of polycarbonate, but the material helps to keep the cost low — under $100 — so I recommend it for someone shopping on a budget.

During our Textiles Lab evaluations for durability, there were some noticeable markings in our scratch tests, but we were impressed by how well the bag maintained its shape after being released repeatedly from our drop tester. Amazon reviewers who regularly use the suitcases say they hold up over time, as well.

When our consumer testers rolled the suitcase through our obstacle course, they were wowed by how smooth the wheels were, with one describing the bag as "very easy to move." We gave the carry-on high scores for packability, as we were able to pack our standard load of belongings (clothing, accessories and toiletries) for a short trip inside with room to spare. Plus, there are interior zippered mesh pockets for easy organization, and the bag expands up to one extra inch for additional packing space.

Listed dimensions: 22" x 14.9" x 10" | Weight: 7.3 lbs | Material: Hardside ABS plastic | Expandable: Yes | Returns: Within 30 days, unused

One of the most popular suitcases on the market, Away's standard carry-on is definitely worth the hype . The bag is available in 11 colors, including on-trend options like green and red, along with neutral hues like gray and black.

Not only is the suitcase simple and stylish from the outside, it's also full of functional features inside to make packing for your next international trip a breeze. The bag unfolds into two separate primary compartments to fit all of your things: one fully zippered side and one with adjustable compression straps, and there are mesh pockets to stash smaller items.

Consumer testers and GH analysts alike love to travel with the Away carry-on, including one who shared, "It fit all of the clothes I needed for a long weekend. It rolled really easily and was light enough to pop in and out of the overhead bin." Testers said the telescopic handle felt flimsier than others they tried, but they were impressed with the bag overall, saying that it was easy to maneuver and roll over different types of flooring, including wood, carpet and tile. And it looked great after our drop and scratch tests, showing no major signs of damage or dents.

Listed dimensions: 9" x 13.7" x 21.7" | Weight: 8.1 lbs | Material: Hardside polycarbonate | Expandable: No | Returns: Within 100 days, unused

Briggs & Riley 31-inch Baseline Extra Large Expandable Spinner

The innovative design details of this softside checked bag from Briggs & Riley help to simplify packing for extended trips abroad. The bag features a unique push-button expansion system unlike any other we've evaluated , which allows you to easily expand the bag, fill it with everything you'll need and then compress it back down to its standard size.

One tester who was impressed with the amount of space in the carry-on version of the bag shared, "It fit clothing and accessories for two people for a seven-day summer vacation." And this checked bag offers more than double the packing capacity. Other innovative features include a built-in trifold garment folder for formal attire and reinforced corners for added protection.

At 15.6 pounds, the suitcase does weigh more than other models we've evaluated, but it is made with a nylon material that resisted wear and tear when I tested it in our abrasion machine. It also earned top marks in our latest round of drop testing. Along with performing well for durability, the suitcase received high scores for maneuverability, with smooth wheels and a sturdy telescopic handle.

Listed dimensions: 31" x 22" x 13.8" | Weight: 15.6 lbs | Material: Softside nylon | Expandable: Yes | Returns: Within 30 days, unused

a briggs and riley suitcase opened and closed in a hallway

Rolling a bag through the airport has never been easier than it is with July's classic luggage , including this spacious checked suitcase and its popular carry-on bags . One GH analyst who took the checked bag on a vacation abroad said, "I've never used a suitcase with wheels this smooth." I've personally traveled with luggage from the brand and was blown away by how effortless it was to roll the suitcases, even over carpet and concrete sidewalks.

The telescopic handle technically locks at 20 different heights to prevent it from falling down on its own, and most testers appreciated the slanted grip on the handle, sharing that it was comfortable to hold and easy to maneuver with.

Made with a polycarbonate shell, the suitcase is lightweight and durable, and the corners are reinforced with aluminum bumpers for an added level of protection. The bag held up well after being released repeatedly from our drop tester, but testers noted marks and scuffs on the surface after taking the bag on just one trip.

It boasts 80 liters of packing space and features one fully zippered compartment and one open compartment with a compression panel and Y-strap for security. Even more, it weighs just 8.3 pounds, which is similar to many of the carry-on sized bags we evaluate.

Listed dimensions: 26" x 18.75" x 11" | Weight: 8.3 lbs | Material: Hardside polycarbonate with aluminum corners | Expandable: No | Returns: Within 100 days, unused

a july suitcase opened and closed against carpeting

Travelpro luggage was created by a pilot who wanted to make bags specifically for other pilots and airline crewmembers who were always on the go. The result is a collection of highly durable, quality suitcases including the popular Platinum Elite medium checked suitcase.

Built to last, the luggage is made of heavyweight nylon material that performed well when I tested it for abrasion resistance. When I released the bag repeatedly from our drop tester, it showed no signs of damage or dents. Our testers also gave the suitcase high scores for ease of use and appreciated the sturdy feel of the telescopic handle. The suitcase does have a more traditional look, though, which some testers described as "old-fashioned," sharing that they wished it were sleeker.

Full of thoughtful and functional features, the suitcase makes packing and traveling a breeze. The bag can be unzipped to reveal one large packing compartment with compression panels that secure your belongings in place, a removable wet bag for toiletries, a large mesh zippered pocket in the lid for breathable storage and a built-in suiter to help keep more formal clothes in tip-top shape. To prevent the suitcase from tipping over when it's full, it's also designed with a unique tapered expansion system, so the bag is narrower at the top and broader at the bottom.

Listed dimensions: 25" x 18" x 11.25" | Weight: 9.8 lbs | Material: Softside nylon | Expandable: Yes | Returns: Within 30 days, unused

two travelpro suitcases open and closed

While some softside luggage is bulky and pricey, this Helium DLX carry-on from Delsey is lightweight, as the name implies, and it's available for a great value. The polyester material isn't quite as durable or substantial as nylon styles we've tested, but the brand's polyester fabric has performed well overall in our abrasion tests without major wear.

Two external zippered pockets allow for easy access to travel essentials like your phone and ID, so you won't have to hold up the TSA line while scouring through your bag. While the bag unzips to expose only one main compartment for packing, it's equipped with a removable bi-fold organizer and expands by two inches for additional room. One tester said, "I love the pockets." Plus, the inner lining can be fully unzipped and removed for easy cleaning.

I personally carry luggage from Delsey and love the smooth wheels and sturdy telescopic handle, and our testers who tried Delsey's luggage found the handle to be comfortable to grip and use. However, they said the bags were more difficult to maneuver through our obstacle course than others they tested.

Listed dimensions: 12" x 17.75" x 28" | Weight: 8.4 lbs | Material: Softside polyester | Expandable: Yes | Returns: Within 30 days, unused

a delsey suitcase open and closed in a hallway

A rolling duffel like this one from L.L.Bean is ideal for longer adventures abroad or for overpackers like me. The duffel isn't as structured as standard suitcases, meaning you can compress it and slide it under your bed or in a closet if you're pressed for storage space — and on the other hand, you can really fill it to the brim when you're packing. Just be careful that you're not stuffing it too much because it can be easy to exceed an airline's weight restrictions.

One GH analyst who loves to travel with this bag said that it's one of her go-to picks for family vacations. With just two wheels, our analyst said it's a little more cumbersome to maneuver than a spinner suitcase, but you also have the option to carry the bag with the padded strap.

The bag has a wide opening for easy access to everything you need inside, and outer compression straps keep everything in place. Made of durable polyester material with a reinforced base, the duffel lasts for years and years without signs of wear, according to our analyst. Plus, it's water-resistant inside and out — perfect for inevitable leaks or wet weather. If you're looking for something smaller, the brand carries a variety of sizes to meet your travel needs.

Listed dimensions: 14" x 17.25" x 32.5" | Weight: 8.8 lbs | Material: Softside polyester | Expandable: No | Returns: Within 1 year

When we evaluated this bag in the Textiles Lab, we were amazed by just how much we could fit inside during our packing tests. Not only did it beat out other travel backpacks we tested, it also outperformed some of our carry-ons because of its spacious interior .

The backpack has a suitcase-style opening and fully unzips to expose a highly organized interior jam-packed with zippered mesh pockets for all of your belongings. It also features a padded laptop sleeve that fits up to a 17-inch computer.

Made of recycled nylon and polyester, the bag is durable and water-resistant. When I tested it for abrasion resistance in the Lab, there were no visible signs of wear. Details like a sternum strap, waist belt and padded mesh provide comfort and support. With backpack straps that tuck neatly inside the back of the bag and carrying straps on all sides, you can easily grab it to lift into an overhead bin.

Some online reviewers wished it was equipped with a water bottle holder and said the zippers can be finicky, but we didn't have issues with them in the Lab.

Listed dimensions: 22" x 12" x 10" | Weight: 3.5 lbs | Material: Softside polyester and nylon | Expandable: No | Returns: Within 30 days, unused

a backpack from cotopaxi unzipped and opened

Able to hold everything you need for a weekend getaway, this weekender from Calpak was the top performer in our Textiles Lab tests. Not only is the bag totally on-trend, thanks to the puffy padded design and fashionable color options, it's also full of functional features . One tester who used it as her personal item on a long trip said, "This bag fits everything I need and more!"

A GH analyst who used the bag added, "I appreciate the well-organized interior," which includes several zippered pockets and elastic storage. Outside, there's a separate shoe compartment, additional zippered pockets and a water bottle holder. Altogether, there are nine pockets, and the spacious bag aced our packing tests.

If you're pairing it with Calpak's popular luggage , this bag has a trolley sleeve that slides right over the telescopic handle of your suitcase. One tester noted that the stitching that secured the sleeve in place started unraveling a bit after just one use. The bag is made of a smooth polyester material that's comfortable to carry and water-resistant. A tester said, "It poured while I was traveling and everything inside this bag stayed perfectly dry."

Listed dimensions: 12" x 16" x 7" | Weight: 2 lbs | Material: Softside polyester | Expandable: No | Returns: Within 30 days, unused

Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler 40L Duffel Bag

Cargo Hauler 40L Duffel Bag

This convertible duffel from Eagle Creek is the perfect adventure travel companion. The bag is durable, combining polyester and nylon for a water-resistant material that also held up well when tested for abrasion resistance . One GH analyst who travels with this duffel said that it still looks great after years of regular rough and tough use.

It's structured and maintains its shape for easy packing, but the duffel can be compressed to bring inside of your suitcase as an extra bag or for compact storage at home. According to our testers and GH analyst, the zippers have large pull tabs that are easy to use, and, according to the brand, they're covered in water-resistant strips for the ultimate protection in wet weather.

The duffel features a reinforced top handle and grab handles along the sides for carrying, and there are adjustable backpack straps for hands-free use that can be connected for an additional carrying strap or tucked inside the bag. Some online reviewers said the backpack straps are on the thinner side and weren't as comfortable as other traditional travel backpacks, but they appreciated the convenient option.

Listed dimensions: 11.5" x 23.25" x 11" | Weight: 2.5 lbs | Material: Softside polyester and nylon | Expandable: No | Returns: Within 30 days, unused

How Carley Fortune's buzzy romance books are making beloved Canadian locations seem ... sexy

Author's newest bestseller, this summer will be different, takes place on p.e.i..

The quaint, pastoral setting for Anne of Green Gables may not be what comes to mind when you imagine a steamy, sex-filled romance novel.

Same goes for a coffee shop on the busy streets of Toronto, or a lakeside cottage in Barry's Bay, Ont.

But that's exactly what buzzy Toronto author Carley Fortune has done with three best-selling romances: make classic Canadian locations sizzle. Now, fans from around the world are clamouring to learn more about places that, to the Canadian reader, might seem familiar but not necessarily sexy.

Industry experts note that may be because traditionally, romance novels written by Canadian authors tend not to be set in Canada. Even books published by Canadian publishing company Harlequin — a destination brand for romances — typically feature exotic or foreign locales , like a villa in France or Italy's Amalfi Coast.

But Fortune's massively popular books are helping to turn that tide, as she features locations like Barry's Bay, Toronto and now, Prince Edward Island.

This Summer Will Be Different , set in P.E.I., was released on May 7 and is already the No. 1 New York Times bestseller for paperback trade fiction.

  • Young female readers, #BookTok fuel spicy romantasy genre's staggering sales figures
  • Q with Tom Power How one horrible phone call led Carley Fortune to quit her job and become a romance novelist

"Lots of people write about where they're from or write about Canada if they're Canadian writers," said Julie Rak, a professor in the English and film studies department at the University of Alberta who researches literature and publishing.

"But this is new. This is a romance genre where you see that. These are romance books; they're not romance-adjacent. These are the real thing. And it's really unlike Harlequin, which could be set anywhere."

Unique settings

Fortune's fans seem to love the specificity of the settings, whether they're travelling to cottage country for an  Every Summer After -inspired getaway, vying for a plate of Sneaky Dees nachos like Will and Fern in Meet Me at the Lake  or planning a trip to P.E.I. to try some Cows Creamery butter , a favourite of Lucy, the main character in This Summer Will Be Different.

A beach at sunset

"Omgggg the book actually makes me want to move to PEI and I haven't even stepped into a single square space of Canada," one fan wrote in a comment on one of Fortune's Instagram posts about Point Prim Lighthouse.

There's been a lot of hype and excitement about Fortune's latest book among locals on the island, and the tourism industry is expecting to see an uptick as readers visit to seek out their favourite locations from the novel, said Corryn Clemence, the CEO of the Tourism Industry Association of Prince Edward Island.

"I think it will help to pique people's curiosity and really do what Anne of Green Gables did so many years ago, which is really excite people about coming to Prince Edward Island," Clemence said.

Canada as a trope

Romance books have been enjoying a surge in popularity in recent years, driven largely by Gen Z readers, according to NPR . On TikTok, the tag #RomanceRecs has more than 390 million views, industry group  BookNet Canada  notes.

BookNet Canada's research shows romance book sales in Canada jumped 54 per cent in 2022, and continue to climb. Most of the top-10 selling fiction books in Canada in 2023 , according to BookNet Canada, were romance titles and "romantasy," a genre that combines romance and fantasy. (Fortune's  Meet Me at the Lake made their list, the only book by a Canadian author.)

All three of Fortune's books have been bestsellers, and in June last year , both of her previous titles were on the New York Times Bestsellers list at the same time.

A composite image of three book covers: Every Summer After, Meet Me at the Lake, and This Summer Will Be Different.

"The idea for all three of my books was born out of the setting, and each is a love letter to a place," Fortune told CBC News in an email.

"I want to give readers an escape. My hope is that they can see, smell, and taste each of these books — that they feel as though they've taken a trip, whether they're laying on the beach or curled up on the couch in their apartment."

Until recently, Canada has rarely appeared in the romance genre, said Duncan Stewart, a consumer-forecasting analyst for Deloitte who lives in Toronto and specializes in media and technology, including book publishing.

But that's changing, he said, pointing to the rise of romance books where the male characters are hockey players as one example of how the genre is shifting. There's Helena Hunting's The Toronto Terror romance series and Stephanie Archer's Vancouver Storm books, for instance.

The Wall of Winnipeg and Me and Canadian Boyfriend , while not set in Canada, also have Canadian (sport-playing) love interests.

Reader of romance? This book club says don’t be ashamed

Part of this may be due to location fatigue and authors looking to do something fresh, Stewart said, noting there are only so many books you can set in Provence or Georgian England.

But he also suspects Canada may be benefiting from the "big city burnout" trope popular in Hallmark movies, where a stressed-out, typically female main character in a big city returns to a small town... and falls in love. Canadian locations, he suggested, are the perfect venue for this kind of escape.

"It's a setting where people are friendly and comfortable and perceived as fit and outdoorsy," Stewart said. "It's exactly like a Hallmark movie, except we also have moose."

Details matter

Rak said what's unique about Fortune's books isn't just the Canadian setting, but the level of detail she provides — like with the red cliffs of P.E.I. and its clay beaches.

This stands in contrast to some previous books in the romance genre, where the location is more generalized and a beach could be a beach in Nantucket as easily as it could be the French Riviera, Rak said.

"She really wants to make sure people know where these places are," Rak said. "Certainly this is new in terms of mass market-style romance, or genre romance."

  • Where I Write Write me at the lake: How Carley Fortune reclaimed her creativity from the edge of burnout

In this way, Fortune reminds Rak of author Alice Munro, who didn't write romance but was famous for her precise on-location work, where every detail is accurate. Louise Penny has done the same thing for the Eastern Townships of Quebec with her mystery novels, Rak pointed out.

One of Canada's most famous pieces of literature is Lucy Maud Montgomery's beloved Anne of Green Gables, which focuses on precise location details, and is connected to an entire tourism industry in P.E.I.

After so many years of being associated with the classic series, it's exciting that people are also seeing P.E.I. through a different, steamier lens, said Clemence with the Tourism Industry Association.

"Even the foggy days or the rainy days, there's still that air of romance about the island."
