Nassau is on an island within a vast archipelago. Many products are necessarily imported and that means prices, including meals at restaurants, can be high. Nassau can also feel a bit "touristy" at times, as the Prince George Wharf cruise ship dock can host as many as five large cruise ships at once. On busy days, cruise travelers are ubiquitous around the downtown area.

Nassau basics

Nassau is extremely popular as a warm-weather getaway destination that's closer to the U.S. Atlantic Coast than most Caribbean basin countries. As a plus, while technically not located in the Caribbean, Nassau and the Bahamas offers the same splendid sunny skies, brilliant blue waters and amazing culture and traditions.

On the small island of New Providence, Nassau is the capital of the Bahamas archipelago. The port is normally a bustling affair, as disembarking guests walk from the pier to Bay Street, parallel to the water, and the downtown shopping area where you'll find tour guides and Jet Ski, beach and watersports excursion operators, taxis for hire, scooter rentals, craft and souvenir shops, and hair braiders.

How to get around

On foot: Many of Nassau's historic sites and the Bay Street retail district are within walking distance of the cruise ship pier and the downtown area. Bay Street is lined with shops, restaurants and bars, and cruisers so inclined can spend the day strolling the area. Just put on your sneakers, disembark your ship, take a few steps and start exploring. There are also ferries to nearby attractions and it's also possible to rent a car or motor scooter.

By taxi: Taxi operators are staged around the Prince George Wharf area. Taxis are not metered, so always negotiate the fare before entering the vehicle.

By bus: Nassau's public buses are known as jitneys and offer a thrifty and convenient alternative to car rentals or taxis. The jitneys cost around $1.25 per person and stop at popular spots, including Cable Beach (see below).

Historic sites

Nassau's history is closely tied to the Caribbean pirate era of the 17th and 18th centuries, when the town served as a pirate sanctuary until 1718 when British Governor Woodes Rogers expelled the buccaneers. Today's downtown district offers 20 square blocks featuring architecture and monuments dating to this compelling era, most within walking distance of the cruise pier.

Nassau's nearby private islands offer a premium beach experience within a 15- to 20-minute ferry ride. Most cruise lines offer shore excursions to Blue Lagoon Island, but travelers can also book a visit through a travel advisor or on their own online. The excursion tends to be popular and does sell out, so be sure to reserve early in your voyage or before you leave home.

At Blue Lagoon, cruisers can swim in a calm lagoon, enjoy kayaking, water-biking or snorkeling tours, play with water toys like floats and inner tubes, or simply relax in a beach hammock under coconut palms. Blue Lagoon offers a gift shop, changing rooms, restrooms and shower facilities.

Best beaches in Nassau

There's no shortage of great beaches in and around Nassau. In addition to the nearby private-island beach experiences, there are several local beaches within walking or short driving distance.

Junkanoo Beach

Junkanoo Beach is approximately a 15-minute walk from the cruise port, offering travelers an inexpensive and convenient way to enjoy some sun and fun. You can normally see your cruise ship from the nearby beach, and vendors selling buckets of ice-cold Kalik and Sands beer (the local favorites) can be found lining the beach. Cabbage Beach

Cabbage Beach on Paradise Island is a 20-minute walk or short taxi ride away from Nassau just over the bridge that spans the islands. While beautiful. the beach's waters can be rough at times and the beach itself does not offer many amenities. However, locals parade up and down the beach offering chairs for rent and beverages sale. Cable Beach

Cable Beach is about a 20-minute drive from Prince George's Wharf and is accessible via taxi. A cheaper alternative is the No. 10 bus, which charges around $1.25 per person. The 2.5-mile-long beach is often described as Nassau's best, but it's one of hundreds across the Bahamas distinguished by bleach-white sands and remarkably clear blue waters. Cable Beach is home to several top Nassau resorts and offers a full array of watersports activities.

Other top Nassau beaches

Montague Beach is situated east of the Paradise Island Bridge and is home to a historic fort constructed in the 18th century. Conch fritters: A Bahamian delicacy (and fortunately bountiful in local waters), the queen conch forms the basis of the territory's undisputed favorite dish. Conch fritters are bite-sized flakes of conch meat fried in batter seasoned with goat pepper, hot sauce and sea salt, plus common Bahamian vegetables.

Peas and rice: Referred to locally as "peas n' rice," this traditional Caribbean dish, prepared in local Bahamian fashion, features deep brown pigeon peas and white long-grain rice seasoned with tomatoes, onions, thyme, tomato paste, goat pepper and salted pork or bacon. The ingredients combine to provide the rice its signature brown coloring.

Johnny cake: Made of flour, milk, butter, sugar and baking powder, this breakfast food is more bread than cake, with a texture that combines dense bread with a slightly sweet cake. As with other staple dishes, Johnny cakes are found around the Caribbean, with the Bahamas version traditionally baked in a large round pan until lightly browned then sliced and served in wedges.

Potter's Cay conch shacks

The Potter's Cay conch shacks can be found beneath the high-arching bridge that connects Nassau to Paradise Island. Adjacent to lively fruit markets, the brightly colored conch shacks feature nearly 40 chefs in different shacks cooking fresh conch dishes in myriad ways.

Besides being a great place to sample an authentic Bahamian lunch featuring the freshest conch fritters and local dishes, the Potter's Cay shacks are a great place to interact with locals, other visitors and the chefs themselves as they chat about the day's catch and argue over a game of dominoes.

With 25 years in the same location, McKenzie, a former conch fisherman turned restaurateur, is a local celebrity among Potter Cay purveyors, with a shack positioned as the first on the bridge's west end.

Graycliff Hotel and Restaurant

About a 15-minute walk or a brief taxi ride from the cruise port, Graycliff Hotel is in a historic mansion whose extensive grounds were once an 18th-century pirate's headquarters. A visitor can spend an entire day exploring the property, which features one of the world's largest private collections, chocolate-making and cigar-rolling facilities, art galleries and craft shops.

The highlight, however, may be the hotel's five-star restaurant, an elegant eatery with a menu combining continental and Bahamian traditions. The sumptuous restaurant features four air-conditioned dining rooms and a garden dining area, with each room decorated to reflect the Graycliff's origins as a private home.

Fort Montagu

Fort Montagu is one of three historic forts in Nassau dating back to the 18th century. It’s a 10-minute taxi ride east from Festival Place. The well-preserved limestone fort was crucial in protecting Nassau from invading Spanish forces. It had provisions for holding 23 cannons and 95 barrels of gunpowder. Now, only four cannons remain.

Fort Montagu, at the east end of the harbor, is the oldest standing fort on New Providence Island. A guided tour of the fort gives you insight into fighting during colonial times in the Bahamas. Tours are available daily.

Climb up the Queen’s Staircase

Climbing the sixty-six steps of the Queen’s Staircase is a must-do activity in Nassau. Next to Fort Fincastle, the steps provide a direct route from the historic fort to Nassau City. It’s worth climbing the staircase to enjoy the incredible views of Nassau and the harbor from the top.

Pompey Square

Pompey Square is a vibrant and historic square, only a short walk from the cruise ship terminal. It is named after Pompey, a slave who led a revolt against British colonial rule in the early 1800s. The slave auction in Nassau was located in this square.

Pompey Square on Bay Street is also home to the Pompey Museum of Slavery and Emancipation. However, you’ll also find several restaurants, shops, and water features if you want to cool off in the hot Caribbean sunshine. During some months, you can buy Bahamian art at the open-air market.

Nassau was once a hotbed for pirates, and the shallow waters around the coast meant large warships couldn’t get close. The museum takes you back to the golden age of piracy in the Caribbean.

You are immediately transported to the 18th century as you enter the museum. You’ll learn about infamous pirates like Edward Teach “Blackbeard,” who once pillaged ships in the Caribbean. Interactive exhibits, weapons, treasure, and other pirate-related artifacts and displays are on display. To add to the interest, a replica pirate ship brings the stories of notorious pirates to life.

The museum also offers guided tours.

The Heritage Museum of the Bahamas

The Heritage Museum of the Bahamas provides insights into the ancient history and culture of the Bahamas before colonial rule.

Just a 10-minute walk from the Nassau cruise terminal, the Heritage Museum provides insights into the indigenous Lucayan people, a branch of the Tainos. Highlights of the museum include artifacts from the Lucayan and Arawak tribes and exhibits on slavery, piracy, and the struggle for independence.

Visiting the Bahamas’s Heritage Museum is ideal for a walking tour on a cruise day in Nassau. It is close to other historical buildings and the free Junkanoo Beach.

National Art Gallery of the Bahamas

The National Art Gallery of the Bahamas is located in the Villa Doyle, a 10-minute walk from the cruise port. The museum is in a yellow colonial mansion with white pillars and balconies. While touring the art gallery, you can admire its diverse collections and exhibitions of vibrant art. You can also explore the lush gardens.  

Graycliff Hotel

The Graycliff Hotel is in a historic mansion built by an 18th-century pirate, Captain John Howard Graysmith. Now, it’s a five-star restaurant, ideal for a luxurious lunch on your cruise day.

Beyond its reputation as a premier dining destination, Graycliff offers more than meets the eye. Guests can witness the art of cigar rolling firsthand, adding a touch of old-world craftsmanship to their visit. Blackbeard’s Tower

Blackbeard’s Tower is a historic landmark located 15 minutes by taxi east of the cruise port. It’s said that the famous pirate “Blackbeard” built a fort here, and the crumbling tower is all that remains. Unfortunately, the attraction is in a state of disrepair and not worth taking a special trip to see.

If you have limited time in port on a cruise day and want to take in historical landmarks, I’d recommend sticking to exploring the well-preserved forts in downtown Nassau.

The historic capital of the Bahamas, Nassau, has plenty more to offer than historical buildings. Here are other excursions you can arrange during your cruise day in port.

Rum tasting at John Watling’s Distillery

No visit to The Bahamas would be complete without tasting locally-made rum. The John Watling’s Distillery is a short walk from the cruise ship terminal in the lush two-acre Buena Vista Estate. The distillery produces small batches of rum and is housed in a historic building dating back to the 1780s.

The distillery offers free tours so you can experience the rum production process. You can also try signature Bahamian cuisine in the Red Turtle Tavern. You can sit on the deck outside and enjoy the lush gardens and Caribbean sun.

Cloisters and Versailles Gardens on Paradise Island offer peace and relaxation on a cruise day in Nassau Port. Just a short taxi ride from the terminal, these beautiful gardens provide a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of the cruise ship crowds. The Medieval ruins feature lush landscapes, tropical flowers, white marble cloisters, and terraced gardens. 

The Cloisters were initially built in France in the 14th century and later dismantled and brought to the Bahamas in the 1960s. Passengers who have booked shore excursions through the cruise line will find their tour operators stationed near the dock. Those who have booked their shore excursions privately must meet their guides further down the dock.

If you want to exchange money, you can onboard your cruise ship. However, the exchange rate from a local bank or ATM will be better.

There are several banks and ATMs located near the cruise port on Parliament Street or in the downtown area.

In the Bahamas, the official language is English. However, some locals may speak Creole or Bahamianese. Overall, nearly everyone speaks and understands English in Nassau.

In the Bahamas, they operate on Eastern Standard Time. Furthermore, the cruise ship time will typically be the same as the time on land.

Taxi operators are located around the Prince George Wharf area. In Nassau, the taxis are not metered, so it’s a good idea to negotiate the ride fare before entering the car.

Nassau’s public buses, also known as jitneys, are an economical and convenient alternative to taxis and car rentals. The bus runs from 6:30 AM to 7:00 PM, costing $1.50 per person for a one-way ride.

There is a bus stop conveniently located near the cruise port, and it stops at popular locations like downtown Nassau and Cable Beach.

Car and Scooter Rental:

For those interested in exploring Nassau on their own, you can do so by renting a car or scooter. There are car and scooter rentals available through Trip Advisor.

However, this is a potential cruise port mistake . If you’ve never driven in the Bahamas, be aware that the rules of the road can differ from the United States.

Most cruise travelers choose to take a taxi or walk in Nassau to avoid the risk of an accident.

Nassau offers a variety of exciting attractions, activities, and historical sites for visitors. Here are the best things to do while you’re in Nassau:

Best Public Beaches in Nassau

There are some free public beaches in Nassau. If you’re trying to save money on excursions during your cruise , these free beaches are the most popular and recommended.

1. Junkanoo Beach

Junkanoo Beach is the closest public beach to the cruise ship port. This free Nassau beach is a good option for cruisers who want to stay within walking distance of the cruise ship.

The local beach is a about a 15-20 minute walk from the cruise port, or you can take a taxi.

At Junkanoo Beach, you can access restrooms, showers, and changing facilities. There are also local vendors who offer chair rentals.

If you get hungry or thirsty, there are various restaurants and bars nearby.

2. Cable Beach

Cable Beach is often called “Nassau’s best beach”, as it is 2.5 miles long and has white sand and crystal clear waters. This beach is lined with famous resorts, including Baha Mar and Sandals Royal Bahamian.

It can take 25-30 minutes to get to Cable Beach by taxi. A cheaper alternative is taking the No. 10 bus, which costs $1.50 per person.

At Cable Beach, you can do watersports, snorkel, and relax under the sun!

3. Cabbage Beach

Cabbage Beach is a public beach which is located on the north side of Paradise Island. You can get to Cabbage Beach by taking a short water taxi ride to Paradise Island ($10 round-trip) or walking for around 20 minutes.

At Cabbage Beach, you will find crystal-clear water and soft sand. Local vendors offer on-site chair and umbrella rentals.

At times, the water can get quite rough at Cabbage Beach. However, you will be right next to Atlantis, which makes for some amazing photos!

4. Saunders Beach

Saunder Beach is a 10-15 minute taxi ride from the cruise part. It is known to be one of the quieter beaches in Nassau, making it the ideal choice for families. At Saunders Beach, you can access restroom facilities and a playground.

Be sure to bring towels, as there are no vendors at Saunders Beach.

5. Love Beach

If you’re looking for a free beach with stunning water, check out Love Beach. Love Beach is located a bit further than Cable Beach, and many people say it’s one of the most beautiful beaches in the Bahamas.

At Love Beach, there will be chair rentals and the Nirvana Beach Bar, a fan favorite among cruisers!

6. Jaws Beach

Jaws Beach is the furthest beach from the cruise port. However, it was the filming location for the movie Jaws III!

Whether you’re a movie fan or you enjoy snorkeling, this beach is definitely worth checking out. There are Hollywood memorabilia and sculptures located underwater, which is super fun.

If you get tired of the beach, you can walk to Clifton Heritage Park and enjoy a picnic lunch there.

Best Island Beach Escapes in Nassau

These island beach escapes are excursions that can typically be purchased through the cruise line. This makes for a hassle-free experience as you won’t have to worry about transportation and planning.

In most cases, you will meet your shore excursion guide at a designated sport before being guided to a bus or boat. From there, you can enjoy your day before returning to the cruise port.

7. Pearl Island

Pearl Island allows guests to relax on the beach, explore the island’s walking trails, explore a lighthouse, and enjoy a traditional Bahamian lunch. Pearl Island is on the pricey side. However, there is a lot included in the price.

Through Carnival Cruise Line, Pearl Island costs $95 for adults and $75 for children. This includes transportation, a lounge chair, a signature cocktail, lunch, and watersports like kayaks, paddleboards, water trampolines, and water mats.

The boat ride to Pearl Island takes roughly 30 minutes, and the excursion lasts approximately 5 hours. At Pearl Island, you will have access to bathroom facilities, changing rooms, and showers.

If you’re interested, VIP cabanas are available at an additional cost.

8. Blue Lagoon

Blue Lagoon is a small island located off the coast of Nassau. Typically, a Blue Lagoon island excursion combines the beach with other activities like sea lion encounters, dolphin encounters, or segway tours. If you want to spend the day at the beach, you can also do that.

Depending on the shore excursion and what cruise line you are sailing with, day passes range from $90 to $200 per adult.

9. Balmoral Island

If you’re looking for a great way to spend your day in Nassau, check out Balmoral Island. Unlike the other islands, Balmoral Island has two freshwater pools available to guests who want a break from the ocean.

The downside to going to Balmoral Island is that your food, drinks, and water sports are not included. If you enjoy doing water sports, it may be a better value for you to try one of the other excursions!

10. Royal Beach Club

Royal Caribbean cruise line is opening the Royal Beach Club in 2025. This beach club be available exclusively to guests onboard Royal Caribbean cruises.

This 17-acre resort is located on Paradise Island, a short water taxi away from the cruise port. At the Royal Beach Club, there will be four pristine beaches for guests to enjoy (Tranquility Beach, Sapphire Beach, Hideaway Beach, and Harbor Beach).

There will also be various restaurants, bars, and pools at the Royal Beach Club. Once the beach is open, it will be the ultimate beach escape for families.

Best Resorts in Nassau (Day Passes)

Resort day passes give cruise ship passengers access to hotel and resort amenities. Depending on the resort, you may find all-inclusive passes.

The resorts typically feature access to the beach, private pools, restaurants, and bars. These day passes can be purchased individually through the hotel or resort.

11. Atlantis Paradise Island

Nassau is one of the main attractions in Nassau, Bahamas, but it is undoubtedly a pricey way to spend your day. A day pass to the Atlantis Aqua Adventure Water Park starts at $210 for adults and $150 for children if you purchase it through the Carnival Cruise Line.

A pass to Atlantis Adventure Water Park includes access to 141 acres of pools, water rides, Atlantis beaches, The Dig, Marina Village, and casino. Food and drinks may or may not be included depending on the conditions of your ticket.

Another option is to purchase the day pass directly through the Atlantis website. The admission price varies on what day you are going, and there is a good chance that you won’t save any money this way. Furthermore, you will be responsible for your transportation.

Atlantis offers additional activities that cruise passengers can do. However, they do cost extra.

Atlantis offers various dolphin experiences, sea lion experiences, stingray experiences, and more. These experiences range in price, but they generally cost $335 for adults and $285 for kids.

You can access certain areas of the Atlantis resort without paying any admission fee. The casino, indoor retail, specific dining venues, and Marina Village are available to the public.

Remember, if you are going to Atlantis without the cruise line, you are responsible for returning to the cruise ship on time. Keep an eye on your watch so you don’t get left behind in Nassau!

12. Margaritaville Resort & Waterpark

Margaritaville Resort & Water Park is a new resort that opened in 2021. This resort features two private beaches, two swimming pools, a lazy river, water slides, and a poolside bar.

The great thing about the Margaritaville Resort is that it’s only a 15-minute walk from the cruise port. Since Margaritaville is a short walk from the cruise port, you can spend the whole day there, and you won’t have to worry about finding a taxi back.

It costs $110 for adults and 55 for children to enter the Margaritaville Resort. This will give you access to all onsite activities, amenities, and Wi-Fi. At Margaritaville, you must pay for the food and beverages.

When we were in Nassau, we spent the day at Margaritaville, and it was awesome! The resort is clean, modern, and the staff is very friendly.

Whether you’re traveling as a family, as a couple, or with friends, you will have a good time at the Margaritaville resort.

13. Baha Mar

Baha Mar is a luxury resort that offers a limited number of day passes. When you visit Baha Mar, you will have access to a 15-acre water park, 24 water slides, a lazy river, an infinity pool, a wave pool, a kids pool, a FlowRide surf simulator, an outdoor casino, and the beach.

Right now, a day pass costs $160 for adults, $65 for guests under 48-inches, and free for guests under two.

14. Warwick Paradise Island

Warwick Paradise Island Bahamas is a resort for guests 16 and up. At Warwick, you will find a small beach and a massive pool with lounge chairs.

A day pass to Warwick Paradise Island costs $130 to $160, depending on if you want the standard or deluxe day package. When you’re a Warwick, your food and drinks are included, which is a huge bonus!

15. Riu Palace

RIU Palace is an adults-only, all-inclusive resort located on Paradise Island near Atlantis. When you’re at Riu Palace, you will have access to a swim-up bar, two swimming pools, and a dedicated beach area on Cabbage Beach.

A day pass for RIU Palace starts at $129 per person. This includes premium cocktails and a poolside “jerk” barbeque station.

When you spend the day at Riu Palace, you must pay for transportation from the cruise ship pier. You will also have to pay $10 for Wi-Fi if you want to stay connected, and there is an additional charge for spa treatments.

16. Breezes Resort & Spa

Breezes Resort & Spa is an all-inclusive that costs $125 for the day. This includes access to the beach, pools, swim-up bar, jacuzzi, land activities, water sports, and your meals and alcoholic beverages.

The resort is located on cable, which is a 15-20 minute drive from the cruise terminal.

Exploring Nassau Bahamas

17. the straw market.

The Straw Market is a large market with handmade Bahamian straw products like purses, bags, and hats. You can also find factory-made souvenirs like shirts, bracelets, and magnets. Before you make any purchases, be sure to negotiate on the price!

The good thing about the straw market is that it’s extremely close to the Prince George Wharf cruise port. If you want to get off the ship and shop for souvenirs, the Straw Market is only a 6-minute walk from the port.

18. The Queen’s Staircase

The Queens Staircase is named after the late Queen Victoria. This historic attraction is a 66-step staircase that was carved out of limestone in 1793.

This staircase provides a direct route from downtown Nassau to For Fincastle. Furthermore, there is no charge to go up the historic staircase.

19. Fort Fincastle

Fort Fincastle is a historic fort that was built back in 1793 to protect Nassau from pirates. At Fort Fincastle, you will gain access to some incredible views of the cruise port.

When you visit Fort Fincastle, you will be near the Queen’s Staircase and the Pirates of Nassau Museum. If you’re exploring Nassau on foot, checking out these three attractions is a great idea!

If you want to enter For Fincastle, the cost of admission is $1 for adults and free for kids under 12.

20. Parliament Square

Parliament Square houses the Bahamas House of Assembly, Supreme Court, and Senate Building. This is a great spot for pictures as the colonial buildings are in a pink pastel color, and they look very tropical.

You will also see a statue of Queen Victoria that was built in the early 1900s.

If you’re looking to spend your afternoon in Downtown Nassau, and you want to visit museums then you’re in luck. Nassau has several museums that are within walking distance from the cruise port.

21. Pirates of Nassau Museum

If you’re traveling with kids, check out the Pirates of Nassau Museum. This is an interesting museum to learn about the history of Nassau and piracy between 1690 to 1720.

One of the cool features of the Pirates of Nassau Museum is that they have a replica pirate ship. This is a major hit among kids as they can walk on it.

Admission to the Pirates of Nassau Museum is $14 for adults and $7 for kids under 17.

22. Pompey Museum of Slavery and Emancipation

The Pompey Museum of Slavery and Emancipation is smaller. Here, you will learn about Pompey, a slave who led a rebellion in 1830 on the island of Exuma.

The museum is located at the Historic Vendue House. This building was built around 1769 and functioned as a marketplace until the late 1800’s. In 1992, it became a museum that was open to the public.

If you want to visit this museum, it is only a 7-minute walk from the cruise port. It’s also located right next to the Straw Market.

23. National Art Gallery of the Bahamas

The National Art Gallery of the Bahamas is the perfect museum for art enthusiasts. This museum features art from the locals and highlights Bahamian history and culture.

It costs $10 for adults, and it is free for children to visit the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas. Furthermore, the art gallery is a 15-minute walk from the cruise port, and it is nearby several other attractions.

24. Heritage Museum of the Bahamas

The Heritage Museum of the Bahamas is a smaller museum with relics dating back to prehistoric times. At this museum, you will see tools used during slavery, items from a Bahamian grocery store in 1900, and a meteorite slice.

When you visit the Heritage Museum of the Bahamas, you will have the choice of doing a self-guided tour or purchasing an audio guide for around $20. The Heritage Museum is a 12-minute walk from the cruise port, and it is near the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas.

25. Educulture Junkanoo Museaum

Junkanoo is a street festival in the Bahamas that happens on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day every year. This cultural celebration includes dancing, spirituality, and listening to music.

If you browse the Internet or read many social-media commentators, you will find all sorts of scaremongering. Nassau can be a hassle. The cruise terminal has been under constant renovations for over a decade and is now being entirely rebuilt. The piers are crowded all day, and moving in and out of the terminal can be chaotic.

There are way too many locals offering taxi rides, tours, scooter rentals, jet-skiing, beach breaks, hair braiding ... you name it. Yes, it all can come across as nagging or harassment at worst. But the cruise port in Nassau is better than many paint it. And the new cruise terminal promises to become one the most appealing once the construction ends.

Nassau is the most visited port in The Bahamas and one of the most popular cruising destinations in the Caribbean itineraries. Located on the island of New Providence, off the coast of Florida, Nassau is 180 miles southeast of Miami, enjoying mild weather in the winter, which is ideal for water sports and activities.

New Providence is a relatively small island - 80 square miles, a bit bigger than Washington D.C. (68 square miles). Although Nassau has a large population (close to 250.000 inhabitants) expanding south and east of the cruise port, the historical center is quite small and is where most landmarks and attractions are found. Right across Nassau, Paradise Island (home of themed Atlantis Resort) is one of the main attractions of The Bahamas - 2-miles from the cruise port.

The piers and cruise terminal are right by Nassau's historic downtown. As mentioned, the terminal building is not the easiest to navigate and gets overcrowded, but the proximity to the capital city is priceless. Considering that Bay Street - the main street of Nassau where most shops are located - is so close to the cruise terminal many a cruise traveler returns to the ship for lunch after a shopping spree without exploring much farther.

Safety, crime and basics

As much as you may read scaremongering reviews about Nassau's crime and safety, it should be strongly underlined that the local population is not the criminal association that some portrait. You should be aware that there are many 'bloggers' making a living out of sensationalist crime reports stating that "burglaries, armed robberies, and sexual assault are common during daylight hours in tourist areas".

Ridiculously stupid as this may sound, in these days when fake and factual news become blurred, it is up to the reader to decide what to believe.

In fact, besides the initial sales pestering, once outside the Terminal, the cruise traveler will be pretty much left alone. Like in many Caribbean Islands (and in most touristic areas everywhere in the World) when passing by shops and restaurants you may be offered all sorts of bargains but if you cannot deal with this maybe you should choose Switzerland or Norway for your vacation.

Unfortunately, it looks like most bad mouth commentators never left the Terminal Building and judge the island 'by the cover'.

There have been lots of reports and warnings about crime in Nassau however, considering that the port is visited by close to 3 million cruise passengers per year, crime-rates should be understood with an overall perspective.

Nassau has close to 250.000 inhabitants and you should be aware of your surroundings. Like in any city (in the US or elsewhere) basic safety in Nassau is really basic common sense. In one word, if you don't feel safe, go back to the cruise ship.

Right next to it is Western Esplanade Beach , where you can find bar restaurants and sometimes there are live performances. These are the public beaches and expect a lot of crowds and noise.

1.10. Saunders Beach

You can reach this beautiful beach within less than a 10-minute drive from the port of Nassau. It is a quiet stretch of white sand with crystal clear water where you can snorkel right off the beach. It’s not crowded and you can spend some enjoyable time with your family and friends away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

If you get hungry or thirsty, you’ll find several food chains and shops across the street. Restrooms and changing rooms are available too.

1.11. Cable Beach

This beach is located near Saunders Beach, a 15-minute drive from Nassau cruise port. It is a small piece of heaven lined with hotel resorts, boasting crystal clear turquoise waters and white sands where you can swim, snorkel or simply sunbathe under the palm trees. Bars, restaurants and watersports are available. It is considered one of the best beaches in Nassau.

1.12. Paradise Island

Within and outside the cruise terminal, you will find vendors selling ferry tickets to Paradise Island where the famous Atlantis resort is located. The Paradise Island ferry terminal is located under the two bridges connecting Nassau and Paradise Island, and from there you can walk to Atlantis Resort.

Keep in mind that it can be very crowded on the way back (as most of the cruise ship passengers go to the island by ferry), so always save at least 1 hour for the transfer back to the ship. An alternative option is to take a taxi to Paradise Island.

Besides the Atlantis Resort, Paradise Island has stunning beaches, such as Paradise Beach, Cabbage Beach, Cove Beach, Smugglers Beach, Arawak Beach, and others. The beaches are public, so you can freely come and enjoy the Caribbean vibes on some of the world’s most beautiful beaches.

2. Pearl Island

This gorgeous tiny island is definitely my favorite when it comes to the Bahamas. It is nestled around 8 miles off the coast of New Providence and a 15-minute boat ride from Nassau. If you seek peace, sugar-white beaches, snorkeling, and delicious Bahamian cuisine far from the bustling city and tourist resorts, you are in the right spot!

The island is private and therefore it’s not crowded. You can take a dip in the crystal clear blue waters, enjoy frozen cocktails at the bar, relax in the loungers or climb the white lighthouse (the symbol of Pearl Island) for spectacular 360-degree views of the island. Island personnel is friendly and helpful, and will do their best to make your stay pleasant and enjoyable!

3. Blue Lagoon Island

I’ve been to Blue Lagoon island twice and both times I had a fantastic time. Blue Lagoon is located a 20-minute scenic boat ride from Nassau and is larger than Pearl Island. You’ll recognize it by the concrete tower that guards the entrance to the hidden lagoon and the incredible turquoise water surrounding the island.

On the island, you can meet dolphins and sea lions in their natural habitat, join eco-walking tours and segway rides around the island, indulge in grilled Bahamian specialties, kayak, snorkel, or swim in a secluded sugar-white beach known as Salt Cay. VIP packages are also offered.

Insider tip : Guests often don’t know the difference between Pearl Island and Blue Lagoon, and are wondering which island is more suitable for them. Pearl Island is very small and is a better choice for those who look for peace. Snorkeling and kayaking are the only activities offered. Blue Lagoon is larger and more crowded. It’s more suitable for families with kids because of the animal programs, an aqua park, and more family-friendly activities.

4. Balmoral Island

Another gorgeous island awaits you just off the northern coast of Nassau. Besides powdery sands and aquamarine water, Balmoral Island offers animal interaction programs (dolphin and stingray encounters), great snorkeling, delicious food, and a stunning beach where you can relax in the cabanas or sunbathe under the hot Caribbean sun.

If you want to explore Nassau in a thrilling and adrenaline-packed way, go for an off-road tour around the city and the island of New Providence.

You’ll stop at famous attractions and landmarks such as the Bahamas Rum Cake Factory (you’ll taste them and see the rum cakes-making process), Fort Fincastle and Queen’s Staircase, Fort Charlotte, Clifton Heritage National Park, plantations, historical villages, rum distillery, and many more.

7. Snorkeling and Scuba Diving

If you are a fan of underwater activities, you should know that the Bahamas offers some spectacular snorkeling and scuba diving sites. You can opt to snorkel from the beach on your own (Cable Beach and Cabbage Beach are great choices), and in that case, make sure you bring your gear.

However, if you want to explore the depths of Bahamian waters, you should book a boat trip to Nassau’s beautiful coral reefs hiding an abundance of incredible aquatic life. The tours will usually take you to the Rose Island Reef , located only three miles east of Paradise Island, an exceptional snorkeling and scuba diving location.

Besides beautiful marine life, you’ll also find two shipwrecks that make this place even more attractive to snorkelers and divers.

Goulding Cay Reef is another fascinating reef located at the western end of New Providence that is said to be one of the best shallow-water snorkeling sites in the world. It attracts both experienced snorkelers and beginners and is suitable for people of all ages.

Nassau is one of the busiest and most frequently visited ports for cruises with Bahamaian and Caribbean Cruise itineraries. 

The port city of Nassau offers travelers a wealth of activities and attractions. Whether your interests are cultural or culinary, there’s something for everyone at this popular destination.

As a travel agent and Bahamas specialist with many years of experience, I have researched and booked numerous cruises to the beautiful island of Nassau in the Bahamas. 

From my first-hand experiences, I can say that while Nassau has some downfalls, it is still possible to enjoy the port, if you know what to do. 

In this blog post, I will share my top 10 recommended things to do when visiting the Nassau Cruise Port in 2024.  

Prince George Wharf: Nassau Cruise Port

The port where your cruise will dock is Prince George Wharf.  It is located near Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas .  The port is quite busy and can be overcrowded at times. 

From the Nassau Cruise port , you can access shore excursions, beaches, Atlantis, and water taxis to nearby islands such as Rose Island. 

Nassau Port Things to Do

1. Visit Atlantis Resort

The iconic Atlantis Resort is located just 10 minutes away from the Nassau Cruise Port.  This resort has something for everyone – a casino, world-class restaurants, beautiful beaches, a waterpark, and more.  

Atlantis is located on Paradise Island .  You’ll want to take a taxi to get there. You can visit the resort area for free, but you’ll need to pay for a pass to use any amenities. 

➡️ Pro Tip:  You can book a room at this nearby hotel   (even if you aren’t staying) and get access to Atlantis.  Sometimes, this is cheaper than the pass! 

2. Tour the Queen’s Staircase

The Queen’s Staircase, also known as the 66 Steps, is a monumental staircase built in 1793 by slaves. 

Approximately 600 slaves hand-carved the Queen’s Staircase, the 66 steps, using only pickaxes and hand tools to cut through solid limestone. The entire staircase was completed over 16 years.

There is no cost to visit.  The Queens Staircase is visited on most city tours and walking tours. You can visit yourself after about a 15-minute walk from the cruise port.

3. Enjoy the Beaches

Nassau offers some of the most beautiful beaches in the Caribbean, perfect for soaking up the sun or snorkeling in the blue Bahamian waters . 

There are many beaches to choose from when in Nassau. Some are within walking distance, and some require a tour or pass to visit. 

Cable Beach  is the most popular beach in Nassau and is close to the cruise port.  Cable Beach offers swimming, sunbathing, shopping, and more. Several hotels along Cable Beach offer day passes for access to their pools, restaurants, and other amenities. 

Junkanoo Beach  is a public beach just a short walk from the cruise port. Junkanoo Beach is a popular beach that can become crowded with multiple mega-ships in port.

At Junkanoo Beach, you’ll find music, food and drinks, vendors, and activities such as volleyball.  

Cabbage Beach  is a public beach located on Paradise Island, home to the Atlantis Resort.  Cabbage Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Nassau and offers plenty of amenities such as food, drinks, showers, and changing rooms.

4. Take a Water Taxi to Rose Island

If you’re interested in getting away from the bustling port, take a water taxi and head out to the nearby private island of Rose Island .  

This tropical paradise is the perfect spot for some peace and quiet. You can even swim with pigs here!

5. Shopping at Nassau’s Straw Market

Don’t miss Nassau’s famous Straw Market for a dose of souvenirs and local culture.  You’ll find handmade straw goods, jewelry, clothing, and other Bahamian trinkets here. 

Bring cash in small bills to bargain with the vendors. You can walk here from the cruise port.  There is also a smaller Straw Market near Fort Fincastle. 

⚠️ The straw markets are infamous for very aggressive vendors.  Keep moving and say no thank you if you aren’t interested. 

6. Tour Fort Fincastle

This 18th-century fort is perched atop Bennet’s Hill, overlooking the harbor in downtown Nassau.  It’s a great spot for picture-taking and offers stunning harbor views.

The fort is free to visit the outside. You’ll need to pay a few dollars for a ticket to enter the fort. You can walk here from the cruise port or take a taxi. 

7. Explore the Historic City Center

The downtown area of Nassau is perfect for exploring the city’s history and culture.  You’ll find cafes, restaurants, shops, art galleries, monuments, and other attractions here.

8. Visit Ardastra Gardens and Zoo 

This popular zoo is home to flamingos, iguanas, exotic birds, and more.  It’s a great place to take the kids for a day of fun.

The Zoo is open seven days a week.  There is a fee to enter, about $30 for adults and slightly less for kids.

9. Enjoy Local Cuisine

Nassau is known for its delicious seafood dishes, so don’t forget to indulge in some local cuisine in Nassau.  My favorite is Twin Brothers for conch fritters and fried plantains.

10. Adventure at Blue Lagoon Island

You’ll need to book an excursion to get out here, as it’s not accessible by public transportation. Most excursions include food and drinks, so you can spend the day exploring the island and then enjoy a beachside meal.

Nassau is home to numerous bars and resorts geared for guests who want to stay a few days on vacation.  These resorts have amenities such as all-inclusive food and drinks, private beaches, pools, and excellent customer service.

Where to Eat near the Nassau Cruise Port

Near the cruise port in Nassau, you’ll have no trouble finding a place to grab a bite to eat.  Plenty of chain-type establishments, such as  Señor Frogs, Fat Tuesdays , and  Hard Rock Cafe, are also here.

Walking toward Arawak Cay, you’ll find more local fish fry booths and smaller restaurants.  

Green Parrot and  Sharkeez  are both near the port and offer food and drinks in a fun environment.  

You can also find more upscale or ethnic restaurants such as the  Taj Mahal  (Indian Food),  Cafe Matisse  (Italian),  Athena Cafe  (Greek), or  Graycliff Restaurant  if you are feeling fancy. 

Not surprisingly, there is no shortage of bars in Nassau near the cruise port.  From Junkanoo Beach to Paradise Island, you’ll find lively bars serving up delicious tropical concoctions.

Getting Around Nassau from the Cruise Port

Unlike some cruise ports, the port in Nassau is conveniently located to almost everything you could want to do. 

One thing to be aware of, and one of the reasons that some cruisers don’t think “Nassau is worth it” is that right when you exit the cruise terminal, there will be many vendors, taxi drivers, hair braiders, and tour operators vying for your money and attention.  

It can be a bit overwhelming if you aren’t prepared.  If you don’t need any of their services, say no thanks and keep walking.

Can you walk to Nassau from the Cruise Port?

Nassau is pretty walkable! You can walk to beaches, restaurants, bars, museums, and shopping from the cruise port. 

Can you get an Uber in Nassau from the Cruise Port?

There is no Uber or Lyft in Nassau. You’ll find plenty of taxis, though!

Are there Taxis at the Nassau Cruise Port?

There are ALOT of taxis at the Nassau Cruise Port.  The government regulates taxi fares, so always check the posted rates to ensure you pay the appropriate price.  

Most taxi operators in Nassau will wait until their vehicle is full of passengers before they leave the port area.  If you know where you want to go and can round up a larger group, you can get a taxi that will leave sooner. 

Are there buses at the Nassau Cruise Port?

Nassau has Jitney buses that run regularly (not as much in the evening). The Jitneys are affordable and safe.  You can find the  routes for Jitneys here . The cost of riding the Jitneys is $1.25

While the weather is nice year-round in the Bahamas, December to April are the best times to visit Nassau.

Is Nassau Cruise Port finished?

Port of Nassau has been undergoing a massive overhaul, to the tune of $300 million. The renovations are expected to be completed around May 2024.

Is it safe to walk around Nassau Bahamas?

Located on the island of New Providence, Nassau is the capital and economic, administrative, and cultural center of The Bahamas. It is one of the busiest and most popular Caribbean cruise destinations due to its proximity to the US and a great tourist offer that consists of a wide variety of attractions, historical landmarks, private island getaways, breathtaking beaches, adventure activities, and more. Nassau cruise port is situated in the northeast of the island, within walking distance from the historic town center, and the cruise terminal is officially called Prince George Wharf. It can accommodate up to eight ships, depending on the size, and the distance between the berths is short, which might result in large crowds and a slightly chaotic atmosphere. The meeting place for shore excursions is usually in front of the ship, on the pier, so make sure you show up on time and bring your ticket where you can find the tour meeting time and place details. 

There is only one terminal building and it is located by the entrance to the cruise terminal area, at the Festival Place, an area packed with stands where you can find tour operators, local souvenirs, places to buy food and drinks, etc. The building offers facilities such as a tourist information desk, ATMs, restrooms, a post office, and here you can also find local vendors and car rental agencies. One of the requirements upon getting back to the ship is to have both the ship card and a photo ID with you, so keep that in mind to avoid inconveniences. 

As soon as you leave the cruise terminal, you’ll spot an array of restaurants, bars, brand stores, souvenir shops, cafes, and a lot of local vendors who will try to sell your tours, day-passes to famous attractions, boat and taxi rides, car rentals, etc.

You can enjoy the shopping at the Straw Market, an open-air flea market where you’ll find straw goods and souvenirs, visit Hard Rock Café, Harley Davidson, or indulge in frozen cocktails at Senor Frog’s. Main historical landmarks are located within walking distance: Queen’s Staircase, the 18th-century limestone staircase leading to the Fort Fincastle was built by the slaves and is located within 1 km (0.6 mi) from the cruise port.

It is situated in a beautiful setting and the Fort Fincastle, the 18th-century fort later transformed into a lighthouse, offers spectacular views of the cruise port and Nassau downtown. 

If you want to learn about Bahamian art, head over to the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas, and if you want to soak up local history, the Pirates of Nassau Museum and Pompey Museum, housed in a picturesque, old building, one next to another, are worth visiting and located within 10 minutes’ walk from the port. 

If you are looking for a nice beach break, you have several options. Junkanoo Beach, a sandy public beach offering a variety of facilities, is situated about a 20-minute walking distance from the cruise terminal. It is usually busy, as it is the closest beach to the cruise terminal, but is a nice place to spend your day and offers wonderful views of the cruise ships. Cabbage Beach, another popular sandy stretch of beach, located on the small Paradise Island facing Nassau and the cruise port, is a great choice, too.

To get there, you can either walk for 1 hour or take a taxi that will get you to the beach in a 10-minute time for a reasonable price. Paradise Island is connected to the New Providence Island by the bridge and is home to the major attraction of Nassau cruise port – the famous Atlantis Resort, featuring a luxury hotel and casino complex, private beaches, an extravagant aqua park, a unique marine habitat, and much more. It is the top choice for cruise passengers, and you can visit it with a shore excursion or on your own (you’ll find many local vendors selling day passes).

Besides that, if you seek gorgeous upscale beaches, you can book cruise ship shore excursions to Pearl Island, Blue Lagoon, or Balmoral Island, private islands where you can enjoy sea animal interactions, a variety of water activities, and all-inclusive service.  Last but not least, for water activities lovers, you can go snorkeling, sailing, scuba diving, jet-skiing, and much more. What The New Nassau Cruise Port Will Look Like [PHOTOS]

Photos released by the group expected to have the winning bid refurbishing the Nassau, Bahamas cruise port offer an early glimpse into what the pier area might ultimately look like — and what entertainment it will offer — once the project is completed.

What Will The “New” Port Nassau Look Like?

According to Global Ports Holding, their vision for Nassau includes open-air, upscale restaurants; architecture designed to “make Nassau iconic as a port destination”; spaces which offer shade by day before transforming at night; trams to transport passengers from their ships to the shopping areas; kiosks for local vendors; an open-air theater featuring local and international performers; and various nighttime activities which they hope will convince ships to remain in port longer so that passengers can experience all the port will have to offer.

Perhaps most important of all, the new vision for Nassau involves making a much better first impression than does the current port, promising “lush landscape features and a fantastic, modern waterfront to rival any anywhere.”

“Gone,” it promises, “are the foreboding gates that make the port feel closed in and discourage passengers from entering downtown,” replaced instead with pathways through a park-like setting which will encourage them to visit Bay Street, downtown Nassau, and the straw market. The proposal also says that Bay Street and the surrounding areas will be revitalized as part of the enhanced port design.

“Sometimes,” says the video’s voiceover, “it takes a true transformation for a place to reach its destiny. For Nassau, the time for transformation is now.” It goes on to point out that for GPH, “managing cruise tourism is all we do… and we do it very well. Clean, modern ports built and managed with passengers in mind and hand in hand with each partner that has become our partner.”

Among the ports they currently manage are ones located in destinations as diverse as Singapore, Barcelona, Lisbon, and Havana. The video goes on to say that locals — “who will be the beneficiaries of this project ” — will play an important role. As for passengers, “the minute they arrive,” says the video, “they’ll know this is not like any other port they’ve ever visited.”

Colin Murphy, GPH’s Head of Business Development adds, “We want to make Nassau a port where people really want to come to again. And if we can create a fantastic experience, and people want to come, then that’s going to improve demand for the cruise lines.”

Once the project — expected to take about two years — is completed, Bahamian tourism minister Dionisio D’Aguilar hopes to see much more money flowing out of cruiser’s pockets and into local cash registers. With current per capita passenger spending coming in at between $70 and $100, he told local media that they would “like to increase that 20-30 percent or even higher.”

Another goal? Getting crew members to come off the ship and spend money as opposed to “[talking] down the destination.”

New Cruise Port Serving as a Catalyst for Nassau’s Redevelopment

The Nassau Cruise Port is seeing positive numbers and results after undergoing a major reconstruction project between 2021 and 2023.

Managed by Global Ports Holding, the facility saw a large investment, which included more berths, better services for passengers, the creation of a retail and entertainment space and general development work.

The project aimed to transform the cruise port into a waterfront destination, said Maya Nottage, regional marketing director at Nassau Cruise Port.

“We had the official handover of the port from the Government of the Bahamas to Global Ports Holding in October 2019,” she told Cruise Industry News .

The $350 million transformation project was scheduled to start in early 2020 but was put on hold due to the pandemic. Despite the health emergency, Global Ports Holding received approval to start construction in about June 2021, Nottage added.

Record-Breaking Numbers

The new Nassau Cruise Port debuted after two years of construction, with a grand opening ceremony taking place in May 2023.

“Since then, things have been buzzing. We had 4.4 million passengers by the end of the year, which was actually more than we projected,” Nottage said, noting that initial estimates pointed to 4 million guests.

The record-breaking number also surpasses the previous all-time high, which was in 2019 with 3.8 million passengers.

In December 2023, the cruise port set a new one-day visitor record, with 29,316 passengers arriving on six different ships.

“It’s a lot, and it’s fantastic for us, for our economy, and our local community. We do our best to make sure everyone is happy and accommodated well,” Nottage said.

“And the passengers love it. We hear a lot that when they think of six ships, they feel a little daunted. But when they actually get here and see how much space we have, and how lovely the redevelopment is, they feel quite comfortable and not overwhelmed.

“We are on track for a new record in 2024. By December, we expect 5.6 million cruise passengers for the calendar year,” she said.

Full Redevelopment

Most of the port area has redone, Nottage said. The redevelopment project included significant work on all of the piers, which have received new surfaces and shaded areas, as well as accessibility features and customer service booths.

Pier 1 saw significant improvements, with steel replacement and a length extension to allow for larger ships to dock.

“Originally, it could not take an Oasis-Class vessel and now it can. We extended it by 200 feet and replaced a lot of the steel on the inside of the pier to make it stronger,” Nottage explained.

A new 700-feet pier was built to accommodate mega yachts and attract more high-end clients, she added.

“They like to come here because we have Bahamas immigration and customs on site and very exclusive access,” Nottage said.

“Pre-pandemic we could maybe take two Oasis-Class vessels, now we actually have the capacity to handle four Oasis-Class ships at a time. It depends on the size of the ships that are going to be next to them,” Nottage said.

New Marinas

After the redevelopment, Nassau Cruise Port now has two marinas for cruise guests taking part in water excursions.

With the new infrastructure, passengers can board boats and water transfers at the East Marina, which is located near Pier 6, directly after leaving their cruise ships.

When returning from their excursions, guests disembark at a new marina built by Nassau Cruise Port on the West Marina, which is located in the commercial space on the other side of the cruise terminal.

Arrivals Terminal

Also new is the port’s Arrivals Terminal, which is quickly becoming a landmark.

“The idea was to create a really iconic ode to the future of what our terminal will be. This is why it looks different from everything else,” Nottage said, mentioning the Sydney Opera House as an inspiration for the unique structure.

The new building houses the Nassau Cruise Port managing office, in addition to customs, immigration, port agencies and a pharmacy.

Two giant LED screens were also installed outside the terminal, sharing information about the community and events happening at the port.

After passing the Arrivals Terminal, passengers get to the new Welcome Plaza, which includes retail areas and more, such as a new ground transportation hub.

Instead of just one exit like in the past, the cruise port now has four exits, leading to different streets in downtown Nassau.

“We really opened the area up to the community and the passengers,” Nottage said, noting that the new arrangement offers “many more opportunities to connect with the region.”

Junkanoo Museum and Commercial Space

The new Nassau Cruise Port also includes a new Junkanoo Museum, in addition to a revamped and expanded commercial retail area, with both food and beverage outlets and retail opportunities featuring local goods.

“We split the retail area into two. The first area is called the Port Marketplace and features about 15 merchants,” Nottage explained.

“By authentic, we mean it either includes 70 percent Bahamian resources or was designed by a Bahamian.”

Passengers are looking for products that they can’t find anywhere else, she noted, which made the approach successful for the sellers.

The new retail area includes a DJ booth, as well as a hair braiding pavilion, providing a “clean, sanitary, and inviting” experience.

Offering a “little more elevated experience,” the second retail area is named Market Plaza, Nottage explained.

“The products cost a little more, but they are also authentic Bahamian, made, and designed as well,” she added.

While some of the current tenants were grandfathered in, others were selected via an RFP process.

“We came up with a mandate for authentic products and gave them communication and marketing classes, help with software, business management classes and whatever else they needed.”

An annex to the plaza is a new entertainment space that features an open-air Amphitheater, an Art Gallery, a wine bar and a selection of eateries and restaurants.

Global Ports Holding is now preparing to launch phase two of the Nassau Cruise Port, which could include the creation of a day-club experience, a kids play area, additional entertainment space, and more retail and food and beverage options.

“We put the RFP out in March. Right now we are negotiating with the interested parties to see whether or not they can move with the project,” Nottage explained in late April.

“We are excited about our progress and the future of our port. For us, this is really just the beginning of what we think is possible for Nassau as a destination,” Nottage said, underlining that the port is acting as a catalyst for the development of the whole area.

Nassau, Bahamas Has a Brand-New Cruise Port 

The Caribbean’s top cruise destination has unveiled a completely reimagined destination in the heart of the Bahamian capital: after three years, the new Nassau Cruise Port is open. 

The new-look port in Nassau has a sixth cruise berth, a new terminal building, and an array of offerings including a Junkanoo museum; event and entertainment spaces, a 3,500-seat amphitheater, a “living coral” exhibit, local shops and new food and beverage destinations. 

The new $300 million Nassau Cruise Port comes as The Bahamas is already seeing sizzling cruise passenger numbers. That includes a new single-day record for cruise arrivals set earlier this year, with 28,554 in one day. 

It’s a significant boost for one of the best-known and heavily-visited cruise destinations anywhere in the world. 

“The new Nassau Cruise Port offers a whole new experience for cruise visitors,” said the The Bahamas’ Deputy Prime Minister and Tourism Minister Chester Cooper. “Not only will Bahamian culture shine through all aspects of the port but the completion of the project marks a great milestone in ushering a new era for tourism in downtown Nassau, as well as a beautiful welcome for the millions of cruisers who disembark here each year.”

The new port includes unique concept in the Caribbean, and a major nod to Bahamian culture and history: the Nassau Cruise Port Junkanoo Museum, an immersive experience that tells the story of the country’s national cultural festival and vibrant art form.

“The port will become a cultural and entertainment hub that celebrates our UNESCO recognized heritage and crafts,” said Bahamas Prime Minister Philip Davis.  “This is a place where our traditions, customs, and artistic expressions come alive, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in the true essence of The Bahamas.

There is a concerted focus on locally-made products, with 40 different retail spaces at the port featuring local outfits like Bahama Hand Prints and Bamboo Shack, among others. 

“We anticipate our traffic numbers for 2023 to exceed pre-pandemic levels with about 4.2 million visitors,” said Mike Maura, Port Director for Nassau. “Our growth trajectory is quite promising. In 2019, which was the busiest year for us to date, we had 3.85 million visitors. For 2024, we already have 4.5 million confirmations.”

Most importantly, it underscores the renaissance of downtown Nassau , a city that has become one of the most dynamic downtowns anywhere in the Caribbean, from The Pointe development on the water’s edge to the new Margaritaville Beach Resort to the Graycliff Heritage Village; the latter has transformed West Hill Street in downtown into a walkable thoroughfare including everything from The Bahamas’ first winery to a chocolate factory to a fantastic Bahamian history museum. 

“Downtown Nassau holds an important place in our history, our culture, and economy,” Davis said. “While redevelopment is challenging, we remain committed to the revitalization of Downtown Nassau.”

New Royal Caribbean cruise ship to set sail from Florida's Port Canaveral this summer

PORT CANAVERAL, Fla. - A new Royal Caribbean cruise ship will soon set sail from Port Canaveral in Florida – just in time for the summer!

The cruise line's Utopia of the Seas will make its debut in the Orlando area on July 19.

The ship comes on the heels of Royal Caribbean’s unprecedented Icon of the Seas launch in Miami earlier this year.

Officials said the ship will be the first Oasis Class ship tailored exclusively for weekend getaways.

It will offer 3 and 4-night vacations to tropical destinations such as Nassau, Bahamas, the cruise line's private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay, and Cozumel, Mexico, according to Royal Caribbean's website . 

The ship will feature:

• Royal Railway – a first-of-its-kind immersive train car restaurant 
•  Caribbean-inspired tiki bar called Pesky Parrott
• More than 40 restaurants, bars and lounges
• Five swimming pools and three waterslides
• Two casinos for a Vegas-style vacay

New York News | Endangered whale found dead at Brooklyn cruise port was likely struck by ship

The 44-foot sei whale suffered “tissue trauma along the right shoulder blade region and a right flipper fracture,” the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society said Wednesday in a Facebook post. Its digestive tract was full of food, the group added.

The MSC Meraviglia cruise ship pulled into Brooklyn Cruise Terminal on May 4 with the dead mature female whale on its bow. The whale was removed and taken to Sandy Hook, N.J., for the AMCS to examine.

The group is authorized by federal authorities to respond to dead whales in New York and conduct animal autopsies, or necropsies. Several of the whale’s organs were sampled for toxins, which were sent to a lab for further study.

“The tissue and bone samples collected will help biologists determine if the vessel interaction occurred pre or post mortem,” the conservation society wrote on Facebook.

Sei whales are classified as endangered and typically seen in deeper waters far from the coast, particularly in subtropical, temperate and subpolar regions.

A spokesperson for MSC Cruises , which operates the MSC Meraviglia, said the ship docked in Brooklyn before a planned trip to sites in New England and Canada.

“We immediately notified the relevant authorities, who are now conducting an examination of the whale,” cruise line officials said in a statement.

The AMCS conducted the necropsy on Tuesday. The incident is also being investigated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration .

Scientists estimated there are 50,000 sei whales remaining in the wild internationally. They have been protected by international treaties since 1970, after decades of whaling decimated the population .
