Norwegian Cruise Line FAQs

NCL stands for Norwegian Cruise Line – the line was first founded in Norway all the way back in 1966.

You’ll be charged gratuities, also known as service charges, over the course of your cruise. Used to pay the line’s restaurant staff and room stewards, they’re an essential part of their earnings.

So yes, while you can ask for these to be removed, cruisegoers generally take a dim view of doing so, especially if it’s simply because you don’t want to pay for gratuities.

As of May 2022, NCL has returned to sailing at full capacity across all its ships.

Previously known as Mini Suites, NCL’s Club Balcony Suites are amongst the line’s many different cabin types.

Staying in a Club Balcony Suite, you’ll be able to recline on your own balcony, get yourself ready in the spacious bathroom, get your beauty sleep in a queen-size bed and get access to a host of different perks, including:

Disembarkation times actually have nothing to do with NCL! It’s the port authority who dictates when you can get off a ship, and these times can vary depending on what time the ship is permitted to dock. However, it’s usually between 6.30am and 8am if you don’t need any help with your luggage. If you do require help, then it’s usually between 8am and 11am.

Great Stirrup Cay is NCL’s exclusive private island, a Caribbean haven where you can do everything from taking it easy on sun-kissed white sands and exploring its waters with a spot of snorkelling to ziplining high above the expanse of the island itself! You might be surprised to learn that NCL does not have formal nights on any of its cruises. The choice is entirely up to you thanks to their Dress Up or Not nights, feel free to look a million dollars or take it easy and keep things comfy instead.

Are drinks included on an NCL cruise?

There is a selection of free drinks included on NCL that include iced tea, regular coffee, filtered water, and certain juices at buffet area. Sodas, specialty coffee, alcoholic drinks, frozen drinks, and bottled water are an extra charge unless you have an NCL drink package that covers these drinks. You can upgrade to a full package at the time of booking or you can upgrade at a later date.

What currency is used onboard an NCL cruise ship?

The currency used onboard a NCL ship is United States Dollar (USD). However, there is a cashless society onboard. When you check in, you open a shipboard account by registering your credit card, your final bill will be then paid at the end of your holiday before you disembark the ship.

Is NCL a formal cruise line?

An NCL cruise holiday is not a formal dress type of cruise. You will not see any formal nights with NCL. There is alternative ‘dress up or not’ nights where there is a suggested dress code, but this is not something you are required to take part in. An NCL cruise holiday is designed to be relaxed for all passengers.

Is an NCL cruise suitable for children?

An NCL cruise has a very laid-back style and is a great fit for families traveling with children of all ages. The Breakaway Class of ships, which includes Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Escape and Norwegian Getaway, all have expansive kids club facilities that far surpass other ships in the fleet. NCL-Norwegian Cruise Line reveals Summer 2023 itineraries

NCL-Norwegian Cruise Line opened for sale its summer 2023 itineraries while launching a Black Friday Sale, the company’s best deal of the year.

In addition to 30% off a voyage on any ship visiting 300+ destinations worldwide, vacationers booking a cruise during NCL’s Black Friday sale will be entitled to all 5 Free at Sea offers including free shore excursions credits, free specialty dining, free open bar, free WiFi and discounted rates for family and friends. The Black Friday offer is available on all departures, itineraries, and published cruise dates from 2021 through the new 2023 itineraries.

With the launch of NCL’s summer 2023 itineraries, passengers have even more choices. From Alaskan glacier viewing to Caribbean island hopping to European explorations, the new itineraries offer experiences that provide travellers with what they have been missing in 2020 - a chance "to recharge, connect and discover."

The new NCL itineraries include noteworthy firsts like NCL’s first visit to Nessebar Bulgaria on Norwegian Jade ’s Extraordinary Journeys through the Mediterranean and Black Sea; the debut of Norwegian Bliss at the Royal Naval Dockyard (King's Wharf Bermuda) during a 7-day roundtrip from NYC New York ; Norwegian Jade’s first visit to Bodrum Turkey and Paros Island Greece during a 7-day roundtrip from Piraeus-Athens , and more. 

Summer 2023 itinerary highlights include:

• MEDITERRANEAN. Norwegian Breakaway , Norwegian Gem , Norwegian Jade and Norwegian Epic sail a selection of 5- to 11-day Mediterranean voyages between May and October. 
• NORTHERN EUROPE. From May 8 through October 17, Norwegian Getaway ’s 9-day Baltic roundtrips from Copenhagen Denmark feature overnight (36 hours in port) in Saint Petersburg Russia . 
• BERMUDA. ​​​​For the first time on the May 21 roundtrip, Norwegian Bliss will visit Norfolk Virginia and make her debut at Bermuda's Royal Naval Dockyard starting a series of 5- and 7-day cruises from NYC. 
• ALASKA. ​​​​​​Between April 22-October 15, in Alaska are deployed 4 NCL ships - Norwegian Sun , Norwegian Jewel , Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Encore . They will sail 5- to 9-day cruises from Seattle WA , Vancouver BC and Seward AK . Every 7- and 9-day itinerary will offer a glacier cruising experience.

Is it worth getting a balcony on a cruise?

Another major advantage of a balcony is for appreciating the delightful views, whether you want to admire an approaching port, gaze out at the majesty of the ocean or take in the beauty of a sunset. No trekking up to the top deck required – simply roll out of bed and step outside to breathe in that sea air and ogle the marvellous vista.

Having a balcony also means you’ll get extra space – it’s an extension to your stateroom so you’ll benefit from even more room to swing cats, or you know, get ready for a big night.

A final perk you might not have considered is the advantage of natural light. Waking up can be tricky even on holiday, especially with curtains so effective at blocking out the rays. By being able to stand out on the balcony with the sun on your face you can embrace the Vitamin D and charge yourself up ready for the exciting day ahead (John, bring me out a tea would you?).
