So this is how to really do an NYC boat tour. Choose which fine dining food option you fancy and then settle into a blissful tour around New York Harbor, with a live pianist your exceptional aural entertainment. And sure, the luxury dining and the music might be pretty good but you wait until you gaze out across the Empire State Building, Brooklyn Bridge, Statue of Liberty and One World Trade Center from your private table with 360-degree panoramic views.

Don't miss: The sultry sounds of the onboard jazz pianist who's on a mission to get people dancing.

Statue of Liberty Express Cruise

2.  Statue of Liberty Express Cruise

Perfect for the sightseer who knows exactly what he or she wants, this Circle Line express tour goes right to the Statue of Liberty – no pit stops this time. Listen to an expert guide point out some lower Manhattan landmarks before pausing for photos right next to Lady Liberty. And since this cruise only takes an hour, it’s easy to fit into even the busiest itinerary.

Don't miss: The perfect photo opp of the famous sculpture and other harbor landmarks.

New York City Sunset Sailing with Wine Tasting

3.  New York City Sunset Sailing with Wine Tasting

Here’s one for the schmoozy, romantic vacationers. The NYC sunset sailing with wine tasting gives you the chance to gaze out as the sun drops below Manhattan, seeing NYC’s biggest landmarks (including the Statue of Liberty) all lit up in a golden glow. And to top it all off, you’re on a luxurious sailing boat, which is equipped, crucially, with a full bar. Not that you'll need it after your third cab sauv.

Don't miss: The snacks and cheese that have been expertly paired with the wines.

Manhattan: Private Sailing Yacht Cruise

4.  Manhattan: Private Sailing Yacht Cruise

Don’t want to share your views of the city skyline? You don’t have to on this private tour of the Hudson River at sunset. It’s your party, so you can bring any food or drinks you like on board. You’ll feel like a high roller as you kick back on your private yacht for the evening.

Don't miss: Chill with your crew on any of the three lounge areas, including the outdoor deck and sun pad.

Circle Line: Complete Manhattan Island Cruise

5.  Circle Line: Complete Manhattan Island Cruise

How better to get your bearing in a city as enormous as NYC than by circumnavigation? The Circle Line’s two-and-a-half-hour tour does a full loop of Manhattan Island, taking passengers past plenty of the city’s most popular sights in the process. Spanning three rivers and all five boroughs, you’ll even pass within touching distance of Lady Liberty herself. In other words, get your camera ready!

Don't miss: Non-English speakers can download the Circle Line app for a translated commentary.

New York City: Alive After Five Cocktail Cruise

6.  New York City: Alive After Five Cocktail Cruise

Get a taste of the Big Apple’s nightlife scene with this happy hour boat tour on the Hudson River. The Alive After Five cocktail cruise has everything you need: a fully stocked bar, a dance floor, and a killer DJ. Did someone say tequila?

Don't miss:  Views of the Manhattan skyline as the sun goes down and the lights turn on.

New York Water Taxi Cruises

7.  New York Water Taxi Cruises

You can't miss the water taxis, they look just like the car versions: big, bright and yellow. These little beauties cruise round New York Harbor daily, passing major sites like the Chrysler and Empire State Buildings, Brooklyn Bridge and the Statue of Liberty. You can stay on and complete the entire loop in 70 minutes, or hop on and off as you please, exploring the greats eats, shops and attractions in NYC's waterside neighborhoods.

Don't miss: They have a team that can help you create a custom route for your journey.

AIANY Around Manhattan Architecture Tour

8.  AIANY Around Manhattan Architecture Tour

The area south of 59th Street is packed with architecturally significant buildings; there’s the Chrysler Building, the Woolworth Building, the Empire State Building, and One World Trade Center, just to name a few. This 90-minute boat tour led by a member of the New York chapter of the American Institute of Architects will cover all of Manhattan’s most significant structures, plus the Brooklyn Bridge, Ellis Island, and the Statue of Liberty.

Don't miss: Sip complimentary beer, wine, or Champagne from the bar while you learn about infrastructure, parks, and architecture.

Staten Island Ferry

9.  Staten Island Ferry

Put your purse away, because the Staten Island Ferry is totally free. That's right, in one of the most expensive cities in the world, you can find a free ride. This old chugger has been going since before any bridges were built, transporting folks from the 'burbs to Manhattan in 25 minutes. Boats leave South Ferry at Battery Park and run 24 hours a day.

Don't miss: The stunning panoramas of lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty.

1920s Schooner Cocktail Sail

10.  1920s Schooner Cocktail Sail

Fresh air, ocean waves, Champagne cocktails, and a massive brunch spread of sandwiches, baked goods, fresh bread, fruit and more – it’s fair to say that this midday cruise on the Shearwater really does have it all. Sit back and relax as the crew guides the restored 1929 sailboat out into the harbor. If you’re lucky, the captain will even let you take a turn at the helm.

Don't miss: Each passenger is entitled to four Champagne-based cocktails – make sure you get your fair share!

Circle Line: Beast Speedboat Ride

11.  Circle Line: Beast Speedboat Ride

Adrenaline junkies will want to book tickets for this supercharged half-hour ride through New York Harbor. The 70-foot speedboat known as the  Beast  zooms toward the Statue of Liberty at 45 miles per hour, kicking up plenty of waves. In fact, the ride can get so intense that guides recommend wearing wetsuits.

Don't miss: The ride is accompanied by a thumping soundtrack to really kick things into high gear.

Discover New York’s Icons

Visit two of the world’s most recognized New York landmarks—the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island—on a ferry from The Battery, the birthplace of New York City.

Statue Cruises offers daily ferries from The Battery to these national monuments. Before or after your cruise, explore The Battery’s perennial gardens , take a ride on the SeaGlass Carousel , or enjoy a meal or beverage from one of our on-site cafes. Purchase tickets online or inside Castle Clinton National Monument . While there, be sure to visit The Exhibit Room to see the transformation of the park and Castle over the past 200 years.

From 1855 to 1890, the State of New York processed immigrants at Castle Garden Emigrant Depot in The Battery. Eight million immigrants came through Castle Garden between 1855 and 1890, and 12 million came through Ellis Island between 1892 and 1954. The United States government took over responsibility for immigration and began construction of an immigration depot on Ellis Island in 1891.

The Statue “Liberty Enlightening the World,” sculpted by Frédéric August Bartholdi and engineered by Gustave Eiffel , is a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States.  The French funded and built the Statue, beginning in the 1870s.  The United States was responsible for providing a site— Bedloe’s Island (now “Liberty Island”) in Upper New York Bay—and a pedestal.  President Grover Cleveland dedicated the Statue of Liberty on October 28, 1886.

Raising money for the pedestal proved difficult in the early 1880s.  In 1883, poet Emma Lazarus composed a sonnet, “The New Colossus,” for the “Art Loan Fund Exhibition in Aid of the Bartholdi Pedestal Fund for the Statue of Liberty.”  Following this fundraiser,  Joseph Pulitzer  published the text in his  New York World newspaper.  Pulitzer, a Hungarian immigrant, went on to urge his readers to contribute to the pedestal, printing the name of every donor and raising more than $100,000 in gifts as small as five cents.   The poem is featured on both the Memorial Plaque at The Battery and the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty .

Architect Richard Morris Hunt designed the Statue’s pedestal, which features a Stony Creek granite facade. Over a century later, the Conservancy ensured that the same stone from the same quarry would be used to construct benches along The Battery’s promenade and the seating wall that separates The Battery Bikeway from the park’s perimeter sidewalk.

New York City’s iconic skyline is best seen from the deck of Clipper City, a tall ship docked at Gangway 2 on The Battery Promenade.

Clipper City sails during fair sailing weather. Learn more about their program and rates here .

The Shearwater is a graceful Newport-style schooner built in 1929, perfect for groups up to 49 passengers . Have your wedding, birthday, or corporate event on board this classic, Gatsby-era sailing ship as she makes her way to the Statue of Liberty and around Manhattan, taking in the sights and sounds of the harbor. If your party is larger than 49, consider our larger boat, the tall ship Clipper City.

CLIPPER CITY

The original Clipper City was built as a cargo schooner in 1854, just prior to the Civil War. Rebuilt and refurbished from the original plans which were borrowed from the Smithsonian Institution, at 158 feet, the Clipper City is an epic venue to host up to 149 guests on a sailing adventure around New York Harbor. Parties and events on our historic tall ships are absolutely breathtaking.

Sailing is About Prevailing.

At Manhattan by Sail, we’re your venue… and so much more. Today, aboard the Shearwater  and  Clipper City , we share the joy of sailing our beautiful harbor with visitors and New Yorkers alike. Offering an incomparable setting for your outing, we’ve developed into a world-class venue. On board during our specialty sails, you can enjoy the sweetness of live jazz music , local craft beers , spicy performances from some of NYC’s premier burlesque performers, and much more. But some things have remained the same since the beginning: our passion, commitment, and our caring, enthusiastic crew who sail each day with their whole hearts.

At Manhattan By Sail, we welcome you aboard to share in our joyful culture and to join us in falling in love with NYC, over and over again.

This is an experience I highly recommend and I'll definitely do again with friends. I booked this for a corporate group outing. It was a great summer Friday excursion with the best view of the city and statue of liberty you won't get on land. Drinks, lite bites, and the Hudson. If you're visiting NYC - Add this to your Things to Do list. If you live in the city, do yourself a favor and experience it in a new way. You'll leave feeling happy to live in such a majestic city.

Absolutely brilliant. Booked the shearwater lady liberty cruise through my New York Explorer pass so wasn't sure what to expect. When we got there was greeted by informative staff and the boat is truly beautiful a restored 1920s schooner. When on board the staff are lovely, gave us blankets and ponchos as it was slightly chilly and the odd spot of rain. Pointed things of interest out to us while on board and kept the great selection of drinks flowing. Brilliant, would recommend.

If you’re going to do a boat trip to see the Statue of Liberty why wouldn’t you choose a historic sailing vessel rather than one of the uninspiring motor boats? Being on a sailing ship with the sails up really adds to the experience. The crew are friendly and engaging and will encourage you to get involved in raising the sails, if you want to.

What a perfect way to enjoy the Upper New York Bay. Great company and both my girlfriend and myself were amazed that all the other boats were so over crowded and ours was perfect. Best way to see the bay and Statue of Liberty. No horrid motor sounds nice music played and drinks on hand friendly staff. Trust us go with this company and you won’t regret it. All the other boats had a frantic experience but ours was heavenly.

Both the ship and the crew were awesome! We especially liked the freedom to move around the entire ship from start to finish. Also not having it narrated turned out to be a plus - it was much nicer to just have informal talks with any of the crew members - they were all very nice and very knowledgeable. They engage volunteers to help and my son really had a great time helping to hoist the sail!

This boat was recommended by some friends & they were spot-on. Loved every aspect of the cruise & enjoyed having a chat with one of the crew members. Had a few cold beers on board too. By far the best value of anything we did in New York, which we found a very expensive city.

Despite being in the nearby area for the past three years this was my first time doing a sail around NYC. I bought tickets on a whim to surprise my boyfriend on a romantic excursion and it was honestly so much fun. The day was really cloudy and cold, but they provide blankets, which is convenient for those who didn’t come prepared. We purchased tickets for the cider tasting/sail, the drinks were good and we were also provided food. The staff were friendly and accommodating and we got really amazing views of the city, I was very happy with our experience.

This has to be the best way to have an enjoyable sail past Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. You can take the incredibly cost-effective Staten Island ferry which zooms past or the organized and rammed tourist boats from Battery Park, which aren’t much slower. Only the clipper yacht passes closely in a duration which gives everyone plenty of time to stare in amazement and get all the photos you need. Our next visit will be with these guys on another one of their sailing tours. A must-do.

Excellent, relaxing cruise around the harbor including a great view of the Statue of Liberty! The weather was perfect and it was a fantastic way to end a hectic day of traveling. My daughter and I enjoyed wine as we sat on the deck and let the gentle breeze overtake us!

We've been on the Shearwater Brunch Cruise 3 times, & once on the Clipper City Beer/Lobster Roll Cruise. Excellent quality food & beverages, friendly & professional staff. I prefer sailing on the Shearwater since it's smaller & I like the more "intimate" experience. Can't say enough good things about Manhattan by Sail & I can't wait to go on another sail!

The Clipper City schooner cruise should be on every NYC visitor's list! We four travelers took a leisurely, exciting, and informative sail around the Statue of Liberty and can't wait to do it again. The captain and crew were personable, professional, and took excellent care of their passengers. It's also really easy to find. What a great experience and it was my 16 year old grandson's very favorite activity during our July trip! It's tops in customer service, communication, and it's TOPS on my to-do list for our next NYC trip!

A friend of ours suggested we try this and it did not disappoint! We had taken a ferry trip last time we were in New York and I have to say the sail boat is definitely the way to go! The staff were all so friendly and work SO hard. Views of the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan were incredible! A really super experience!

You start directly at the Hudson River, from where you sail towards the harbour. From the Shearwater you can relax and admire the skyline – best with a glass of champagne in your hand!

Go to the New York Skyscraper Museum

skyscrapers_190520085802011

For those who are interested in architecture this is a museum you definitely dont want to miss out on! They focus on Manhattans high rise buildings and the people who created the famous skyline as it stands today. Also the last existing original of an architectural model of the World Trade Center is shown.

Budget-Tip:  You don’t have to pay for the Skyscraper Museum when having one of the New York Attraction Passes !

Visit the Museum of Jewish Heritage

museum_of_jewish_heritge.jpg170803180050018

Another highlight located in the beautiful Battery Park, is the Museum of Jewish Heritage. “A living memorial to the Holocaust” is the slogan of the museum and aptly reflects what this museum is all about. The star-shaped granite building tells the story of the Jewish heritage but above all a detailed depiction of life in concentration camps.

One World Observatory: See New York from above

One_World_Observatory_Aussicht_180205093112003

The One World Trade Center is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere meaning that is the ultimate place for an observation deck. The One World Observatory offers amazing views over the whole of Manhattan, the Hudson and East Rivers and of course the Statue of Liberty. As one of NYC’s newest attractions the modern building and its observation deck have many amazing features that make this well worth the visit!

Visit one of New York's most emotional Museums

180122162932002

The 9/11 Memorial Museum is located at the 9/11 National Memorial and is probably one of the most emotional museums in New York. It is mostly located underground and displays debris from the former Twin Towers in addition to many of the personal belongings of those buried. Among them are fire trucks deformed by heat, a part of the antenna of the North Tower, a scorched elevator motor, the saving stone staircase (Survivor’s Staircase) as well as remains of sidewalks, street signs, bicycles and baby carriages that were in front of the World Trade Center.

Looking for an Italian Food Market? EATALY is just 3 blocks away!

EATALY_Downtown_New_York0_1733x960

In 2010, Eataly was opened in New York by master chef Mario Batali. The pizza is very remeniscent of pizza and the wine selection is huge. You will also find a large selection of ecellent pasta, salads, and sandwiches. In terms of price, it has to be said in advance that a pizza starts at $15 and can cost $25. Nevertheless, this Italian food market is for me one of the most beautiful and best in the city!

Attractions in Battery Park City

Many of New York’s major New York attractions  like the 9/11 Memorial & Museum or the One World Observatory are located on Lower Manhattan and are therefore easily reachable from The Battery:

01 Brookfield Place

230710202144004_Brookfield_Place_Christmas_Tree

02 Brookfield Place Christmas Tree

Overlooking the Hudson River, the tree at Brookfield Place is an underrated beauty. With its dazzling lights reflecting on the water, it creates a magical ambiance. Winter Garden often hosts special Christmas events and is home to a variety of luxury stores and restaurants, and you can marvel at the famous Luminaries there, too!

Luminaries Light Show

03 Luminaries Light Show

This beautiful holiday light installation was designed by LAB at Rockwell. Glowing lanterns that change colors and intensity will light the room inside the winter garden at Brookfield Place. If you stay here long enough, you may even catch a winter-themed show that is displayed every 30 minutes. They are one of my favorite New York Christmas lights, complemented by the alluring ambiance of Brookfield Place.

Brookfield Place is also a great destination to do some holiday shopping and connects to the Westfield shopping center inside the Oculus. When you’ve finished all your seasonal gift purchases, it’s great to sit down on the stairs inside the Winter Garden and enjoy the show.

Best Restaurants in Battery Park City

el_vez_170318165529006

This chic local spot is a very popular place for after-work cocktails. With great food and a nice atmosphere it is worth a visit, especially in the warmer months where you can sit outside. The portions are generous and the prices (main course from $15) are reasonable. Make sure to order a portion of chips and guacamole before you start your main course – the best in town!

02 Hudson Eats

In the Hudson Eats you can enjoy a great view of the Hudson River and the Statue of Liberty. The restaurants are more in the upscale segment, so not really low budget, but even here there are a few alternatives to save a little money. You can find for example the Blue Ribbon Sushi Bar, Umami Burger and Dos Toros Taqueria. The architecture inside is also very impressive. Not only culinary is a visit to Hudson Eats worthwhile.

03 Seamore's

Shake_Shack_180105140510001

04 Shake Shack

Shake Shack is a burger chain with more than 20 stores in New York alone. We got this spot recommended by a New Yorker as the “ best burger in town ” with the warning that you have to wait an hour for your burger – but it was worth the wait! From the outside the burger shop may seem quite inconspicuous, but the burgers are certainly among the best in New York .

Battery Park – Statue Cruises

Save time, buy your tickets online.

  • Battery Park
  • Liberty State Park
  • Park Program

Located at the most southern tip of Manhattan Island and facing the New York Harbor, the park gained it name from the number of artillery batteries that once were placed to protect the settlement. Castle Clinton was built in anticipation for the War of 1812. Between the years of 1855 – 1890 the castle was used as the first immigration station where more than 8 million immigrants arrived and were passed through the doors. Castle Clinton also served many other purposes and not just as an immigration center, but as the New York City Aquarium that at one time saw more than 5,000 people a day. Once the aquarium closed its doors at Battery Park and moved to Coney Island, the Castle was then restored by the National Park Service (NPS). It later reopened to the public in 1975.

Today, Castle Clinton National Monument serves as a home to the ticket office for Statue City Cruises.

Battery Park

Did you know Battery Park is named after actual artillery batteries used to defend the settlement in the early days? Located on the Southern Tip of New York Harbor, the park is still home to Castle Clinton – a small fort built before the War of 1812. In addition to the park itself, there is also the planned community of Battery Park City.

After the September 11th attacks, Fritz Koenig’s The Sphere which used to be in the center of the World Trade Center was moved to Battery Park.

Battery park to get 5-foot lift to protect against rising sea levels, climate change.

Mayor Adams announced Monday that downtown Manhattan’s iconic waterfront park will be elevated 5 feet higher as part of the city’s ongoing waterfront resiliency efforts.

“No one has forgotten the devastation of Hurricane Sandy 12 years ago. Every day, we’re in a race against the next superstorm,” Adams said during a groundbreaking at the park. “We have to build a safer, stronger and more sustainable city.”

The new construction project aims to rebuild and raise the Battery’s wharf promenade at the tip of Manhattan to protect against storm-surge flooding and rising sea levels caused by climate change. It’s expected to be complete by 2026.

City officials estimate that, when finished, the upgrade will help protect 100,000 residents and 12,000 businesses.

It’s one of several public works projects underway in lower Manhattan to protect against the sort of flooding that gripped the city when Superstorm Sandy paralyzed downtown in 2012.

As part of that broader effort, which is projected to cost a total of $1.7 billion, the city completed work on a 45-ton storm gate on the Lower East Side in 2022 and is continuing to construct storm walls along the East River . Those walls are also expected to be finished in 2026, according to city Environmental Protection Commissioner   Rohit Aggarwala .

Aggarwala said Monday that aside from improving resiliency on Manhattan’s southernmost tip, the Battery project will get much of its construction materials delivered by boat, which will limit the need for trucks to make deliveries and thus reduce greenhouse gas emissions tied to the job.

“A lot of the material here is being reused on site. We’ve got special equipment that protects from noise and air pollution,” he said. “And a lot of the material was brought here by water rather than by truck, reducing the overall impact of this construction project on the city and on the environment.”
