Visiting Oman's Empty Quarter: Everything You Need to Know

The Empty Quarter

The Arab world is known for its wide deserts, especially the Rub’ Al Khali (the Empty Quarter), with its golden sands. Here is everything you need to know about the famous Rub’ Al Khali Desert for your next visit to Oman.

What is the empty quarter.

The Empty Quarter is the English name for the Rub’ Al Khali desert, located in the southern part of the Arabian Peninsula. It is the largest continuous sand sea in the world, with an area of 650,000 square kilometres (250,000 sq mi), and 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) long and 500 kilometres (310 mi) wide. The Al Rub’ Al Khali desert is shared by four countries: Saudi Arabia, Yemen, the United Arab Emirates and Oman.

The surface of the desert is covered by reddish-orange colored sand dunes, which reach around 250 metres (820 ft) high, and several lake beds. It is believed that the lake beds were originally shallow lakes formed by monsoon rains thousands of years ago, and only lasted for a few years.

Al Rub’ Al Khali, as one of the most significant sand seas in the world, has been featured in several international films, such as Star Wars: The Force Awakens , The Matrix, The Panther and many others.

How to get to the Empty Quarter

The Empty Quarter is located in the Governorate of Dhofar in southern Oman, so it is better to fly to Oman through Salalah International Airport. Tourists can also fly to Muscat International Airport, but from there will need either to fly or drive to Salalah by car or bus.

Several companies provide tours and guides to visit the magnificent sandy desert, such as Al Fawaz Tours , Safaridrive.com , Original Travel , Light Foot Travel , and Oman Day Tours . Tours include one-day trips through the desert with a skilled Bedouin guide, 4×4 driving and camping under the bright stars.

Activities in the Empty Quarter

Visitors can enjoy a 4×4 drive in the desert or a camel ride, or camp out on the dunes. One of the best experiences in the Empty Quarter is to spend some time with the Bedouins of the desert. Visitors can enjoy listening to old stories about Oman, its culture and the desert. They will be introduced to the lifestyle, homes, and food of the Bedouin people.

Best places to stay and eat in the Empty Quarter

Due to the harsh environment of the Empty Quarter, there are no touristy places or facilities such as hotels. However, tourists are encouraged to spend a night or two camping on the stunning dunes, under the clear sky and the bright stars of Dhofar. Tour companies have camps with tents.

As for food, most companies have local Bedouins cook traditional Omani food for visitors. Other companies prepare their own food.

Weather in the Empty Quarter

The region is classified as “hyper-arid”, which means that it lacks water for the growth of plants or survival of animals. Rainfall is less than 3 cm (1.2 in) every year. The daily temperatures are between 47 °C (117 °F) and 51 °C (124 °F).

The people of the Empty Quarter

Despite the severe environment of the Al Rub’ Al Khali desert, several tribes from the Arabian Peninsula have managed to establish life on its sands. Most tribes that live there do so close to the edge of the desert. Few roads exist to help settlers find water spots and oil production centers.

Tips to follow before you visit the Empty Quarter

Bring light clothes, big hats, high-quality sunglasses and a jacket and sweater for the cold nights. Due to the conservative nature of Omani culture and the Bedouins, don’t bring short clothes or swimwear that is very revealing.

However, we didn’t get to do any dune bashing, just reached a dune, walked for 15mins and got back into the car. This was somewhat underwhelming, having done a 6hr round trip and expecting this to be the highlight of the trip. Also there wasn’t much flexibility in terms of seeing the sunset, contradicting past reviews. Having done a similar trip in the UAE, this one was overwhelmingly disappointing. • nafandra 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Taking advantage of the 7.5 hour layover tour in Muscat Me and my family just came back from a trip to London, and within as early as 6 months before the trip we have chosen Oman Air as our carrier of choice due to very reasonable prices (540 GBP for a return flight from Jakarta to London) and during the inbound flight we had a lenient layover time of 7.5 hours. As none of my family had been to Oman before, I did a bit of research of what can be done during a short layover tour in Muscat in the evening with such duration. Vacation Packages Oman was on top of the search result, and amazingly within seconds from the moment I opened the website, a manager on duty promptly popped up on the live chat bubble and directly answered my inquiries. I finally agreed with what they had to offer and I didn't regret it. I felt really guilty because I showed up more than an hour late due to late flight from London to Muscat and had to amend the number of participants because of my grandparents being not fit that evening, but nevertheless our guide Mr. Sulaiman said it's not a big deal and continued on guiding us seeing the Grand Mosque, the Royal Palace, and the Mutrah Souq. He is very friendly and informative and speaks really good English as well. We are picked up on a large air conditioned MPV Big thanks to Mr. Majed Khaled as well on helping me with the inquiries beforehand. I am looking forward to going back to Oman for a longer period of time to enjoy more of what they have to offer. Read more Written June 15, 2019
  • jareif112 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles A lovely tour of some of the variety Oman has to offer My family (6 members, 4 young children) chose to visit Oman during the Eid Al-Fitr holiday. Vacation Packages Oman had a bit of difficulty securing a guide for us since it was a holiday and most people were home celebrating with family, but they succeeded in placing us with someone for two days during our trip, and we're happy they did. Our guide Rashid was fantastic. He was patient and understanding of our travel needs with the young children, and was always happy to chat about any aspect of Omani life and culture. We all traveled in one very capable Land Cruiser into the "Interior" of Oman to see the town of Nizwa with its old fortress and some of its date farms. Then we traveled down to the Wahiba sands. We had to cancel our plans to camp in the desert overnight due to a violent unexpected storm, but the storm did make for a drive that was quite an adventure in itself. The second day, we worked our way back toward Muscat, seeing some of the wadis (Wadi Bani Khalid, Wadi Tiwi, and Wadi Shab) as well as the Bammah Sinkhole on the way. The whole family really enjoyed our time on the tour, as well as our other non-guided days we spent in Oman. It is a lovely country, with stunning coastlines and friendly and generous people. Highly recommended! Read more Written June 12, 2019

Empty Quarter Salalah Oman Desert Safari & Night Stay in Bedouin Tents

Empty Quarter Oman Near Salalah

Empty Quarter Oman (Wüste Rub al Khali im Oman) is one of the most famous and one of the largest deserts in the world. The amazing sand dunes are located around 200 kilometres North of Salalah, Oman, in Dhofar Governorate . The trip to Southern Oman is incomplete without having desert safari in Rub Al Khali.

In a region defined by deserts, Empty Quarter is daunting and inhospitable. It might not be the place to build a city or a town, but it is one of the most popular attraction for adventurous travelers who want to experience a real natural wonder. And that’s what adventure lovers want. A Safari at the dunes in off-roading vehicle – Toyota Land Cruiser or Nissan Patrol.

The desert has a lot of uniqueness. Each part has a tale, which is untold and undiscovered. That’s why it’s a must see and experience tourist attraction in Oman. In this post, we will cover the details about Empty Quarter, the best way to go there and what to do. So that you don’t miss anything while you are in Salalah.

Why Empty Quarter is known as Rub Al Khali?

Empty is translated as Khali in Arabic and the Quarter is translated as Rub. So Empty Quarter is known as Rub al Khali in Arabic language, which is the language of the Middle East. It’s not only the language of the region, but also of Islam. The Holy Quran is in Arabic Language as well.

Empty Quarter is Huge

Rub Al Khali is huge pile of sand gravels. The desert has an area of over 500,000 square kilometres. To be specific, its length is thousand kilometres. The width is half of that.

Interestingly, Empty Quarter stretches in four countries. Oman is one of them. Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen are the other 3 countries. Although, most of Empty Quarter lies in Saudi Arabia, Oman has a significant portion too.

Empty Quarter Oman’s Distribution Among Governorates

In Oman, this desert extends to 3 Governorates (called Mahafizah in Arabic). Firstly, Empty Quarter is located on the Northern side of Dhofar Governorate , particularly on the other side of Dhofar Mountains.

Similarly, it’s on the Norther side of Al-Wusta, which is central governorate. Finally, a small portion of the desert is present in Ad-Dhahirah as well.

Empty Quarter Oman is the Best

Since it is in multiple countries, dune bashing can be experienced in any one of these. However, the one in Salalah, Oman is the best. There are many reasons for this, which I will explain in this post in details.

As Salalah is a popular destination, a trip to Empty Quarter Oman can be planned easily from here. Additionally, you can visit some other attractions on the way. For instance, Wadi Dawkah and The Lost City of Ubar (Wubar).

Guided Tour to Rub Al Khali Oman

Then, the drive will continue past the town of Thumrait , which is a small town and wilayat of the Dhofar Governorate in southern Oman. In ancient times, Thumrait was an important point on the Arabian peninsula’s caravan routes. Frankincense trees, an important crop, used to grow in greater abundance in Thumrait than now.  Here, you can see town while passing by.

Jurjen Duintjer

Jurjen lives in Dubai, UAE. As an entrepreneur and investor he co-owns several businesses. He is the route planner and navigator. Living and working in Oman from 2008 to 2014 inspired him to set up Dunes and Stars in order to show others this remote but stunning part of the world and share his passion for adventure with more people.

Abdullah Mashaikhi

Abdullah lives in Muscat. With vast experience guiding tourists around the beautiful sites of Oman, he is also very skilled in desert driving and enjoys teaching others how to master the sand. When Abdullah is not taking tourists into the desert, he can be found in his workshop tuning American cars.

Abdullah will be part of every trip; Jurjen joins on longer expeditions. To complete the crew we will bring several crew members for each trip. On most trips we will also bring a cook.

What to expect

From September to April, we venture into Oman’s remote Rub Al Khali desert. Now you can join us too, and experience driving deep into this true wilderness and out again. We offer short three day trips out of Muscat or full six day expeditions from Salalah if you wish to master the highest sand dunes in the world. All itineraries allow for a relaxed pace as we enjoy driving in the sand and take in the stunning nature all around.

Getting there

You’ll fly to Oman’s capital Muscat or the southern city of Salalah. Next morning, we’ll pick you up and present you the cars. Don’t worry, we come fully prepared for this adventure with plenty of food, drinks, camping gear, navigation and communication equipment, recovery gear, tools… everything!. Then we’ll set course for the Rub Al Khali desert, an endless sea of sand. We can go straight there or take a scenic route, crossing mountain passes or along the Indian Ocean coast.

Feel the sand beneath your feet

We’ll take it slowly at first to see how comfortable everybody is driving in the sand and teach you the basics if required or help you improve your skills. Then, for the few 100 kms, there is nothing but sand as we follow the planned route, often crossing sections of high dunes. Each dune crossing is a little adventure. Together, we’ll have to ‘read the sand’ to pick the easiest way to ascend and descend again. Often, it’s not that easy! We might get stuck but that is all part of the fun. Getting unstuck, which requires a team effort, is hard work but very rewarding.

A billion stars

Before sunset, we’ll find a nice place to make camp and soon you’ll be sitting around the campfire with a cold drink and the delicious smell of food on the grill. We do the cooking and help you set up your tents. Then, beneath a billion stars in the dark desert night sky we can share stories – or just enjoy the silence as we recharge for tomorrow. After two, three or four days in the sand, we’ll exit on the other side of the desert and head back to base, looking forward to a dip in the pool or the ocean. Why not celebrate our last night together over dinner and drinks at a 5-star hotel! Then, we’ll say goodbye and you will be a unique experience richer.
