You collect colorful dots in the quest to become the longest worm, but the introduction of other players brings a more competitive, multiplayer experience to the classic formula. 

If you collide with another player, you’ll lose your ever-growing companion and will have to start the process of consuming dots all over again. Other players will gobble up the dots you leave behind, increasing in size and becoming an even greater threat than before.

Celeste Classic

Much like Spelunky, Celeste also had its beginnings as a small prototype developed in several days before it became the game many of us know and love today.

Wordle took the world by storm, eventually being bought up by the New York Times. If you missed the boat, it's a deceptively simple word game. You have six guesses to figure out a five-letter word. After each guess you're given feedback in the form of yellow and green boxes—yellow for letters that, while part of the secret word, are in the wrong position, and green for letters that are correctly placed. It doesn't take long to play each day's puzzle, and you can brag to friends if you got lucky and nailed it on the first guess.

Browser word games still feel like all the rage lately and Sqword is one that will really stretch your skills. The goal is to take each letter you're given from the deck and place it in a 5x5 grid to create as many words as possible. Never have I thought so hard about consonant density. Each day brings an update about your family and whether they're being held in comfort or punishment based on your performance as well as new rules about what topics the nation's public are most interested in reading about. A classic board game brought into your browser. Settlers of Catan, now just called Catan, helped usher in the golden age of board games as it grew more and more popular outside of Europe. If you've never played Catan, here's a free opportunity to hate your friends because they won't give you any fucking grain.

Play : Agar.io | Developer: Matheus Valadares

Though Agar.io looks simplistic with its colored circles on a checker-lined background, it's surprisingly challenging. Your circle starts off very small, but when you eat all of the little colored dots around you, you get bigger. As a small circle, you move quickly and are able to dodge the bigger circles trying to eat you. When bigger, you need larger portions of food. To grow even more, you must eat the other players.

Since smaller players move faster, you can split your circle into two different circles of equal mass. When splitting your circle, the new one will shoot out, which is useful for enveloping the smaller player running away from you. Once a bigger player gobbles you up, you have to restart as the smallest possible dot. The circle of life is brutal.

Isleward 

Play : Isleward | Developer: Big Bad Waffle

Isleward doesn't look like a multiplayer game at first. It's a low-res roguelike that has you choosing what character you want to play before dumping you on your own into the city of Strathford. In Strathford you get your bearings, learn how to queue up actions and explore. There are also a few low-level monsters that you can find and kill to level up. 

Eventually you'll run into other people and hopefully convince them to adventure with you. A party of different characters is much stronger than one player alone, and significantly more fun. There's a whole world to explore, loads of islands, and lots of loot to find.

Slither.io

Like Agar.io, Slither.io is about eating small dots (this time ones that glow) to grow bigger. The twist: you're a snake . Your body gets longer as well as slightly wider as you eat the various dots that are littered around. You can't eat your enemies, but if you time it well, you can force another snake to run into your body. This will make them vanish, leaving behind loads of body dots to collect. 

Slither.io also lets you customize the skin of your snake, and there are some awesome options. Consider pimping out your snake with a necklace that dangles as they slither.

Kingdom of Loathing

Play : Kingdom of Loathing | Developer: Asymmetric Publications

Kingdom of Loathing is a sort of pseudo-mmo kind of thing, firmly embedded in the web interface, with drop down menus letting you select your attacks, and page refreshes for every new area. It's a little ugly, but Kingdom of Loathing isn't trying to be pretty. It's trying to be funny, and it's been going strong for years.

Take, for instance, the pun-based classes. The Sauceror flings hot sauce in people's faces, and they get damaged, because hot sauce would really hurt if someone threw it at your face. The Disco Bandits dance at their enemies, fuelled by moxie. And then there's the Haiku Dungeon, where not only are all the descriptions of your enemies in haiku form, but so are your attacks.

The whole game is consistently absurd and amusing, from the enemy types, to the genre conventions it apes so cleverly. And while you can't directly play with other people, you can steal their stuff, join guilds and interact.

It might be called 8 Ball Billiards Classic (8BBC), but the game is actually just virtual pool. You play in turns and have to pocket stripes or solids, depending on which type you first sink into a hole. Although it's a mouse-based game, it's surprisingly easy to play on a laptop touchpad.

What makes it difficult is the two-player competition. Your opponent can't go beyond you, so you must use your character to push or block your opponent as a fireball rains down upon them. It's a deliciously evil game, one of our favorite two-player online games to play when you've got a score to settle.

4. Gravity Shift

Most two-player online games focus on a 1v1 dynamic. Instead, Gravity Shift is one of those 1v1 browser games that forces you to team up to solve physics-based puzzles. Each player controls an on-screen character, one with the WASD keys and the other with the arrow keys.

In each level, you'll need to move the characters so all buttons are pressed, opening the portal to the next level. You can also find gravity inverting tiles to change your character's gravity. It's all about coordination and puzzle-solving as a team.

5. Money Movers

Not all two-player games online are simple. In Money Movers, you play two brothers who are staging a jailbreak. Each level takes you further out of prison as you use the abilities of each brother to solve the puzzle and get to the exit.

The big burly brother can pick up and throw objects but is less agile than the younger one. The little brother is fast and can jump high. Using a combination of their abilities, you'll need to flip switches, avoid or incapacitate guards, and think of clever ways to get out of a variety of jams.

Some levels are pretty tough, and you and your friend will have a great time figuring them out. As they say, two heads are better than one.

Plus, once you're done with the game, there are two sequels to enjoy. Check out Money Movers 2 and Money Movers 3 if you can't get enough.

Pong 2 is an online recreation of the classic game Pong. Each player controls one paddle on opposite sides of the screen as the ball zips back and forth in between. Pong 2 is one of the best online Pong games because of how customizable its settings are.

You can change both players' ball speed and paddle speed; we recommend 15-20 for the ball speed and 10 for the paddle speed. You can also change the background and the color of the paddles.

Bowman is an archery game where you aim to hit the opponent by estimating the correct trajectory of your arrows. The concept is relatively simple, but what makes the game so much fun is finding the right angle and amount of force to put in your shot so you don't miss your opponent.

You can make the game more challenging by adding wind and a wall between you and your opponent so they can't copy your trajectory to hit you. You can also make it even more fun by challenging your friend to see who can get the first headshot.

8. Paddle Battle

Paddle Battle is a lot like air hockey, where you use your striker (aka mallet) to try and hit the puck into your opponent's goal while they try to do the same. Except here, instead of playing with strikers and pucks, you play with balls.

Each player controls a ball to hit an orange ball (i.e., the puck) into their opponent's goal while using the board's walls to bounce off. To win, you must be the first to score a given amount of points or have more points than your opponent when the time runs out.

To make it extra fun, you can also slightly change the board's shape to make it more challenging to maneuver your ball. A game can be as short as a minute, up to 10 minutes, or have no time limit, so you can play endlessly.

9. Get on Top

Get on Top is the game we imagine will have you and your friend laughing together in no time; it's just as fun as it is simple. Your objective in the game is to pin your opponent's head to the ground while staying on top to avoid having the same done to you.

You do this by jumping on, pulling, and pushing your opponent—all while your hands are tied to them. It's sort of like a virtual wrestling game.

What makes the game so enjoyable is seeing all the bizarre ways your characters move about as you both try to stay on top and not get pinned down. The first player to score 11 points wins.

A group of 7 to 15 players are assigned roles such as serial killers, townsfolk, Mafia and dozens of others. No one knows what role another person is playing, so it’s up to the killers to knock people off at night, while the townsfolk try to catch them during the day. 2. Surviv.io

There’s Fortnite, there’s PUBG, and then there’s Surviv.io .

Okay, admittedly, that last one is a browser game with super-simple graphics and a top-down perspective, but why should that count against it? It’s still an awesome squad-based Battle Royale shooter where teams of two or four players try to outlast the others.

For those unfamiliar with the Battle Royale concept (where have you been these past two years?), you start with almost no equipment and need to scour a large map for guns, armour and other resources. Then, once you’re stocked up (assuming you’re not dead yet), you head out to hunt down other teams or just hunker down and try to survive.

3. Gracie & Mike

Something a bit smaller-scale than most of the offerings on here, Gracie & Mike is a 2D run-&-gun platformer that you can actually play with your friends in the same room (if you have gamepads).

Unusually for a 2D platformer, you play the game in split-screen, running through jungles and enemies’ hideouts, all presented with nostalgia-inducing 8-bit graphics. Think of it as a stripped-back version of the arcade classic Metal Slug.

4. Realm of the Mad God

This is another browser game that eventually made it over to a Steam release (which is free to play). Luckily, you can still play Realm of the Mad God for free in your browser, letting you enjoy one of the most intense shooter experiences alongside your friends. (Each instance has an 85-player capacity.)

You traverse a vicious fantasy world, fighting increasingly powerful mutations, monsters and bosses while accruing “fame.” Death is permanent here, but you can use your previous character’s Fame points to purchase equipment for your next creation.

A gritty survival experience masked in cutesy top-down graphics, Devast.io is an online game set in a post-apocalyptic world where the extent to which you co-operate or go solo is entirely up to you.

You start by gathering resources from trees and stones while desperately seeking out food, with the aim of eventually building up a self-sustaining base out in the wasteland. There are other players in the world as well as hostile creatures and radiation to worry about.

The quality of online games has improved greatly since then, and even better, they tend to focus on competition.

It’s you against your friends (or working with your friends against others) in pretty much every genre available: first-person shooters, real-time strategy games, RPGs, and (of course) MOBAs and MMOs. In this article, we’re going to go over the best Online Games for Mac in 2024.

Often hailed as the ultimate sandbox, Minecraft is the digital equivalent of a limitless LEGO set, blended with adventure and a hint of survival. StarCraft 2

Starcraft 2 now makes money through microtransactions for items such as skims, voice packs, and war chests.

No matter the race, players must take control of a large-scale economy that tasks them with gathering materials required for building their base and researching the technology used to develop an army capable of conquering their foes. And when it comes to battle, each facet of your strategy is there for you to micro-manage, right down to individual unit control.

Although there is a single-player story campaign, the multiplayer component has received better reviews whether you’re looking to tackle co-op missions with a friend or compete against others in 2v2, 3v3, or 4v4 battles.

Here we have one of the more generous free-to-play online games, as DotA 2 gives you everything you need to be competitive upfront and throughout. Developed by Valve , this game is the offspring of Defense of the Ancients, a community-created mod for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and its expansion pack.

What does that mean? Well, it means you’re getting a MOBA with the pedigree and experience behind it to provide hundreds of hours of intense competition against an active community of players. At its core, DotA is a game about 5 on 5 combat, placing teams on separate bases on a map that must be defended. Each player controls a “hero,” and teams must work together to utilize the strengths of their heroes to destroy a structure—called an “ancient”—within the opposing team’s base.

All heroes are free, as is everything you need to play and win the game; in-app purchases won’t make it easier to take out your opponents, they’ll just get cosmetic items for your heroes and the world they inhabit. And of particular interest to Mac gamers, Metal support via MoltenVK is coming soon.

World of Warcraft

There was a time when World of Warcraft was the go-to title for online multiplayer gaming. Seems like every Mac gamer I knew had an account, it was just a matter of how long they kept it active due to the subscription-based payment system.

That system is still in place, but Blizzard offers two options to get into it. First, you can get the $59.99 World of Warcraft: Complete Collection —which comes with 30 days of playtime and access to the latest quest lines via a character boost to get your hero to the proper level. If your pocket is a little lighter, however, you can jump in by paying just the subscription fee…no base purchase required. You don’t get access to the newest quest lines, but you wouldn’t be able to use them, anyway, since you’ll have to spend the time to get your character up to level 110 to play them.

And just why would you want to subscribe to a game, anyway? World of Warcraft has been entertaining millions of MMORPG players since 2004. It gets expansions about every two years and offers plenty to do between those major releases. If the thing you hate most about quality RPGs is that they end, then you need to check out World of Warcraft.
