10 Amazing Things to Do in Palawan, the Philippines

palawan tourism website

Palawan is a long island located just off the western flank of the Philippines and a paradise from end to end. Best known for its bright blue waters that contrast against the karst stone cliffs of the island, this is one of the most popular resort destinations in the Philippines and is only an 80-minute flight from the capital of Manila. With plenty to explore from the gorgeous beaches , caves, jungles, and the occasional settlement offering rustic Filipino food , almost bottomless beer , and good company, Palawan offers adventures in the water, on land, and at the dinner table.

Swim in Kayangan Lake

The water in Kayangan Lake is believed to be some of the cleanest and clearest in the whole country, which says a lot given how famously clear the hundreds of lakes and lagoons the Philippines is home to. Located on Coron Island, off the northern end of Palawan, you can visit the lake on a group tour or book a private guide. After a steep climb up a wooden staircase through the jungle, you'll find the clear waters of the lake and also one of the most famous viewpoints in Palawan, which looks out on the bay between Coron and Busuanga Island.

Catch the Sunset on Nacpan Beach

TripSavvy / Paula Galindo Valle

There are a lot of beautiful places to watch the sunset in Palawan, but Nacpan Beach is believed by many to be one of the best. Not far from the main town in El Nido, the nearly 2-mile stretch of the palm-lined beach stands out for the curved strip of land that stretches out into the water and peaks into two picturesque hills. While many people decide to make a day trip, it's also possible to spend the night at the glamping resort right on the beach, which offers luxury in the form of air-conditioned tents.

Sail to El Nido's Secret Beaches

TripSavvy / Jess Macdonald

Across the sea from El Nido , on the northern end of the island, Bacuit Bay's limestone islands loom on the horizon, just waiting to be discovered. This part of Palawan is made for island-hoppers , and there are many tour guides with boats-for-hire who will be more than happy to show you the ins and outs of the bay's lagoons and beaches. Motorized outrigger boats may quickly be hired from multiple providers around town. Just check with your El Nido hostel, hotel, or resort ; many resorts and pension houses have their own craft for hire or will recommend a trusted outside provider. You can go kayaking in the Big and Small Lagoons on Miniloc Island or swim under the limestone opening to Matinloc's Secret Beach.

Explore the World's Longest Navigable Underground River

The Cabayugan River flows down from the Saint Paul mountain range within the 22,000-hectare Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park before descending into a cave, the title attraction. From Puerto Princesa, you'll need to take a bus and boat to get to the park, and because limited slots are available for tour groups, it's best to book your tour with a local travel agency.

The underground section of the Cabayugan River is 5 miles long, but only about half of this is navigable by boat. You can ride a paddle-powered outrigger boat from the cave's mouth and sail about a mile into the grotto, and marvel at the exquisitely-shaped limestone formations and the bats and birds that call the inner chambers home.

Spot the Philippines' Rarest Birds

Palawan is an essential stop for birds flying this hemisphere's migratory routes. The East-Asian Australasian Flyway (EAAF) runs between the northern Arctic Circle and New Zealand, with Palawan in the middle offering a rest stop to over 170 species of migratory birds escaping the cold weather from either pole. Palawan is also home to 15 endemic bird species found nowhere else, like the Palawan hornbill (Anthracoceros marchei), the Palawan scops-owl (Otus fuliginosus), and the cave-dwelling Palawan swiftlet (Aerodramus palawanensis). Wherever you end up along Palawan's length, you'll only be a few minutes drive away from some of the best birding sites in the Philippines.

Go Wreck-Diving in Coron Bay

Six shipwrecks that date back to 1944 and World War II tempt divers of all experience levels. Beginners can glide past the ships' exteriors, admiring the coral-encrusted cranes, portholes, and armaments. At the same time, expert wreck divers can enter the vessel and discover a dark, lost world of abandoned engine rooms, scattered personal effects, and bomb holes opening to the deep.

Coron's wrecks range in depth from 10 feet to 140 feet deep, with an average depth of 60 to 80 feet. Motorized outrigger boats called banca take divers from Busuanga Island to the wrecks, which are clustered surprisingly close together: you can spend several days just picking your way through the shipwrecks and dodging the considerable marine life in the area, including yellowfin tuna, groupers, scorpionfish, and sea turtles.

Eat, Drink &; Be Merry in Puerto Princesa

Travelers tend to treat the capital Puerto Princesa as a short stopover if they don't go immediately from the airport to El Nido or Port Barton. However, these travelers miss out on a vibrant city with many wonderful things to eat and drink.

The two top restaurants both serve Filipino food but with very different vibes. Kinabuch   is like an open-air dive bar with plenty of fried Filipino favorites served with the best local beer. Kalui is more artistic with natural finishes and Filipino art aplenty. You can then top off your night with the spectacular selection of craft beers available at Palaweño Brewery . The barkeep will happily serve you a flight of their current beers on tap!

Guard Against Invaders at Taytay Fort

Mike Aquino

Called Fuerza de Santa Isabel by its Spanish builders and Taytay Fort by present-day locals, this coral and limestone fort was built in the early 1700s to defend Taytay against pirates and slave raiders.

The roughly square-shaped fort occupies an outcropping over Taytay Bay; from this vantage point, defenders could rake the bay with cannon-fire, sinking any foolhardy pirate ships within range. Climb up the stairs into the fort’s upper levels, and you arrive at what looks like a small park, with benches overlooking Taytay Bay and presently dormant cannons still looking out to the sea, as if still on guard against pirates.

Go on an African Safari at Calauit Island

The former dictator Ferdinand Marcos had some crazy ideas, but few were as wild as the African Safari in the north of Palawan. In 1976, Marcos talked the Kenyan government into donating African mega-fauna to the Philippines and stocking Calauit Island with giraffes, zebra, and antelope.

You can ride or walk around several established trails and feeding stations to see the few dozen giraffes and zebra descended from the original arrivals. The African imports mix easily with large local animals like the Calamian deer and wild boar. A safari to Calauit can be easily arranged from the town of Coron. Any hotel or resort around Busuanga Bay will be glad to direct you to their partner tour agencies.

Explore a Prison Without Walls at Iwahig

ClaudineVM/Getty Images

Established during American rule in 1902, Iwahig was first conceived as an overflow facility for prisoners from Bilibid Prison in Manila. Later, administrators took advantage of the terrain to convert Iwahig's purpose from punishment to rehabilitation. It's located about 12 miles west of Puerto Princesa, and tours and visits can be easily arranged. The tourist experience includes a dance routine performed by select inmates and a visit to a graceful old building—formerly a recreational center for prisoners—that now showcases the prisoners' handiwork for sale.

Iwahig is an active prison spread across over 20,000 acres with 4,000 prisoners on site. Here, prisoners can choose to farm on their own plots of land or create products that they can then sell to the tourist trade. Family members are even allowed to come live with them. A merit system allows prisoners to earn points and profits towards their release, including fisheries, carpentry, and farming.

The Philippines’ ‘final frontier’ no longer, Palawan is a must for the global traveller, with its heady mix of sublime seascapes, virgin rainforests and world-class resorts. Palawan’s beaches simply have no equal, and with scores of islands to explore, the archipelago offers boundless opportunities for those looking to escape reality for a few days – or months.

Diving and snorkelling

A rich underwater tapestry greets scuba divers who flock to Palawan , which lies at the very heart of the Coral Triangle biodiversity corridor. The highlight is Tubbataha Reefs National Park , a partially sunken atoll in the middle of the Sulu Sea that’s accessible only by live-aboard boat from late March to mid-June. Here hammerheads mingle with giant wrasse and manta rays on a radiant coral shelf. Up north in the Calamian Islands , experienced divers penetrate the haunting husks of some two dozen Japanese shipwrecks sunk by American bombers in Coron Bay in 1944. The Calamians, along with El Nido , have outstanding reef diving. Live-aboard trips between these two tourist hotspots cut through the Linapacan Archipelago, characterised by crystalline waters and lonely beaches.

Island hopping

Top of most visitors' bucket lists is boarding a trusty Philippine bangka (motorized outrigger) or speed boat and setting off to explore Palawan’s 1780 islands. Paradise takes many forms here: from the James Bond-worthy seascapes of El Nido’s Bacuit Archipelago ; to the striking turquoise waters and dazzling coral reefs of the Calamian Islands in the north; to the Maldives-esque sandbars of the up-and-coming Balabac Archipelago in the extreme south of the province. Why not unplug from the world and take a multiday expedition, camping on remote islands under the stars, far removed from other tourists?

Palawan travel - View of green mountain and tropical beach, El Nido bay, Palawan island, Philippines

The best part about Palawan’s glorious beaches? Only a fraction are known to the masses. The rest are yours for the taking. El Nido has a seemingly endless supply of sandy dreamscapes both onshore and offshore in the Bacuit Archipelago. The latter was the muse for Alex Garland’s seminal novel, The Beach . North of El Nido, a rough road leads to amber-toned Nacpan Beach , a 3km sprawl with partial sunset views that somehow remains relatively undeveloped. Heading south along Palawan’s west coast, wind-swept affairs like Long Beach in San Vicente lay exposed to the full force of the Pacific Ocean. Way up north, the Calamian Islands are known for postcard-perfect islets often ringed 360-degrees by blindingly white sand.

Jungle adventures

Close to 50% of Palawan’s old-growth forest cover remains intact, by far the most among Philippine provinces, providing ample opportunity for landlubbers to frolic in the forest. Waterfalls – there are literally thousands – thunder out of mainland Palawan’s jagged peaks into crisp emerald-green pools. Estrella Falls in Southern Palawan has no less than 64 tiers; it takes four days to reach them all. Naturalists can prowl the rainforests in search of giant monitor lizards, monkeys, endemic Palawan bearcats or flying foxes. Birdwatchers migrate from around the globe to spot rare species like the vocal Palawan hornbill or the red-vented (Philippine) cockatoo, while determined trekkers can scale myriad peaks.

Palawan’s tourism wagon is firmly hitched to the sea, and so is its diet. In Bacuit Bay, bronzed backpackers on island-hopping trips out of El Nido alight on idyllic beaches to gorge on repasts of prawns, squid, mussels, crab and red snapper (pro tip: pick the boat operator with the best lunch). Calamian boat trips offer a similar culinary experience. In remote fishing communities across Palawan, dinner consists of whatever the locals caught that day, perhaps a dorado (mahi-mahi) or yellowfin tuna for sashimi if you’re lucky. Back in civilisation, Kalui in the provincial capital, Puerto Princesa , does delectable set seafood menus complemented by salads of seaweed and forest-picked fern.

Adrenaline rushes

How extreme can you go? Palawan is an amazing destination for adrenaline junkies. In El Nido, it maxes out with cliff-diving from the karst towers of Bacuit Bay – the Red Bull cliff diving series stopped in El Nido earlier this year. Also in the El Nido area, Sibaltan Beach is an up-and-coming kitesurfing spot while Duli Beach woos surfers; the season for both is November to March. Karst is everywhere, providing rock climbers with opportunities to get vertical – El Nido and Sabang are good choices. The latter is the site of the Subterranean River National Park , the longest navigable underground river in the world. Access is by slow paddle boats that hardly qualify as extreme, but with permission you can don spelunking gear and proceed 3km beyond the tourist zone.

Sea kayaking

Why not skip the standard bangka tours and explore Palawan’s iconic bays by sea kayak? Multi-day expeditions are a logical next step. Several companies on the main Calamian island of Busuanga already offer these. Busuanga is surrounded by little islands that provide shelter and good camping spots. Sea kayakers can spend up to a week paddling around the island, fishing for their food and basking in isolation. More extreme are two-week Busuanga-to-El Nido expeditions that pit person against sea. Paddling has the additional benefit of having limited impact on Palawan’s fragile environment.

Sustainable travel

Palawan has always had a responsible attitude towards its environment. It was one of the first provinces to crack down on litter, noise pollution and single-use plastics. There is plenty at stake, as the province’s pristine rainforests and coastal ecosystems are under grave threat from illegal logging and destructive fishing practices. Against that backdrop, several award-winning resorts are leading the way toward a more sustainable future, blending native design and low-carbon elements like solar panels, composting and edible gardens to create living spaces that will last. Ecotourism will play a role in determining the future of the archipelago. Do your homework and choose responsible tour operators and resorts. The future of Palawan depends on it.

ABOUT SEE & DO EAT & DRINK STAY BUDGET ADVICE

Travel Insurance

Anyone who has been to the Philippines, or plans to visit the country has probably heard of Palawan. The main Palawan Island is part of the province of Palawan along with the islands of Coron, Culion , and Balabac .

Considering its beautiful beaches and lakes teeming with rich marine life, Palawan is definitely on the bucket list of many travellers from all over the world.  The province houses a couple of UNESCO World Heritage sites, wildlife sanctuaries and marine reserve park.  Even the smaller and less popular towns have their own charm many tourists cannot resist.  Truly this archipelagic province is a gem that shouldn’t be missed.

Best Time to Visit

It’s best to visit the Philippines during the dry season .  Dry season in the Philippines spans from November through April .  These are the summer months in this country.

Be aware that temperatures and humidity levels are particularly high in April and May .

The best time to be a beach bum and explore the islands is from March to May.

TIP:  Booking for summer trips should be done as early as possible, at least a month before your travel dates, since resorts get fully booked early.

The period from June to October is the rainy (wet) season and is best avoided due to the high possibility of typhoons. The typhoons can not only be destructive, but most tours and activities are cancelled under such circumstances.  Transportation via plane and boat is also seriously impacted as well.  This happens frequently so beware!

This guide recommends traveling to Palawan Island in April-May or in November-December , just before and just after the rainy season. This will likely bring fewer crowds, yet pleasant weather, and is also a great time to score a travel deal.

SEE & DO

The following is your guide to places to see and activities to enjoy while in Palawan Island.

1 | Puerto Princesa

Puerto Princesa is the capital of the Province of Palawan.  It is where the world-famous and UNESCO World Heritage Site, Underground River is located.  Beach-lovers also love Puerto Princesa for its Honda Bay as well as its newest attraction, the Kamia Bay Inflatable Island.  Other attractions frequented by tourists in Puerto Princesa includes Baker’s Hills, Mitra’s Ranch, Palawan Wildlife and Conservation Center, Puerto Princesa Cathedral, and also the historical Plaza Cuartel.

Being the capital, Puerto Princesa houses the busiest airport in Palawan as well as a few malls and cinemas, several groceries, hotels, restaurants, banks, and other business establishments.

Coron is always associated with beautiful beaches, islands, and even lakes. Kayangan Lake , the most photographed attraction in Coron and is the cleanest lake in the Philippines, is located in Coron.  Other popular attractions in Coron are Twin Lagoon, Malcapuya Island, Barracuda Lake, and Banana Island.  Coron is also a haven for divers because of all the Japanese shipwrecks such as Skeleton Wreck, Lusong Coral Garden and Shipwreck, and East Tangat Wreck.

You may also want to experience a bit of Africa in Calauit Safari Park.  The park has zebras, giraffes, Calamian deer, porcupines, pythons, and many others.

3 | El Nido

Just like Coron, El Nido is associated with beaches, islands, and lagoons.  The Secret Lagoon is a crowd favorite not only because of its clear water and white sand but also because it is interestingly hidden behind giant rocks.  It can only be accessed by wading or swimming through a small hole in the rocks that is only visible to the surface during low tide.  El Nido also has Secret Beach, Snake Island, Simizu Island, and Helicopter Island.

Apart from these breathtaking bodies of water, El Nido also boasts of Taraw Cliff, the highest point in town.  It gives the magnificent view of El Nido and Bacuit Bay from 230 MASL.

4 | San Vicente

San Vicente is where Port Barton is located, a smaller and quieter version of El Nido but has started to become known among travellers especially backpackers and truly adventurous travellers as it doesn’t offer luxury vacation.  Aside from being less crowded, it is less commercialized and less expensive compared to El Nido or Coron .

The town of Culion used to be a leper colony from 1906 up to 1980 but was only declared leprosy-free in 2006.  It was the biggest and most equipped leper colony at that time.  Nowadays, tourism is growing in Culion since people are interested to take a glimpse of its sad history considering that most of its structures are still intact up to this day.

Culion is a good side trip when touring Coron.

NOTE: The Balayong Festival occurs annually in Puerto Princesa the 4th of March

Klook

EAT & DRINK

The following is your guide to the flavorful food to enjoy and restaurants to try while in Palawan Island.

1 | Tamilok

Complete your Puerto Princesa adventure by trying out tamilok which is known as a woodworm but is actually a mollusk feasting on mangroves and woods immersed in sea water.  Tamilok is typically eaten raw but marinated in vinegar, chopped chili peppers, and onions, just like a ceviche.  Its texture is quite slimy and tastes almost the same as oysters.  You can eat tamilok in various places such as Baker’s Hill and in the vicinity of some of the attractions in the city.  In some restaurants, they even serve deep-fried and breaded tamilok.

2 | Chao long

Chao Long is a noodle soup introduced by Vietnam nationals when they sought refuge in the province in 1975.  Chao long is a rice porridge with innards, has sweet broth and is often garnished with bean sprouts and mint leaves.  Chao long is typically paired with french bread stuffed with pork, beef, or chicken.  One bowl of this sweetish soup ranges from P40 to P100 depending on where you are eating.  Popular places to eat chao long includes Viet Ville, Lou’s, and Rene Saigon.

Freshly roasted cashews are a must-try when visiting Coron .  L. Escarda’s Coron Harvest is a popular place to get your cashew fix as it always gets sold out.  Better come early in the day to ensure that you get some.  Roasted cashews at L. Escarda’s come in five variants or flavors: garlic, sun-dried, brittle, bandi (sweetened and caramelized), and toasted.

4 | Pan de Coco

Almost everyone who has been to El Nido raves about this coconut-filled bun by Midtown Bakery.  It is oozing with real coconut and is served warm from the oven.

5 | Falafel

Falafel may not be a traditional Filipino food but this one in a little take away which is open 24/7 serves the most delicious and unforgettable falafel.  Falafel is a Middle Eastern food that is made of ground chickpeas, fava beans, or both.  People line up for this so you have all the more reason to try it.

6 | Crocodile Sisig

Kinabuchs Bar & Grill in Puerto Princesa City serves the most delicious crocodile sisig in town.  This sizzling dish made of chopped crocodile meat is often served with egg and is best eaten with rice.

Suggested Budget

This chart is your guide to get an idea of how much to budget daily in Palawan Island.   Actual amounts will depend on YOUR travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages … some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less. Prices are in USD.

Travel Costs

Accommodation.

A bed in a  hostel  dorm costs from 350 PHP ($7 USD), but smaller dorms can cost from 500 PHP ($10 USD).  For a private double, prices start around 700 PHP ($14 USD).

Most  budget hotels  begin at 700 PHP ($14 USD) per night for a double room and usually include free wifi and breakfast.  For  a three-star hotel , prices begin around 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.  AirBnB  is also widespread throughout the country, with private rooms starting from as little as 500 PHP ($10 USD) per night.  For entire apartments, expect to pay at least 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) per night.

Resorts and luxury accommodations  vary greatly from 1,400 PHP ($28 USD) to 5,000+ PHP ($100+ USD).  However, there are some really nice resorts and luxury accommodations which are surprisingly affordable.

We use and recommend booking online to save money using  HostelWorld ,  Agoda , and  Expedia .

Local food is extremely cheap, with street food costing under 50 PHP ($1USD).  For an inexpensive meal at a local restaurant, prices start around 100 PHP ($2 USD).  For a meal at a mid-range restaurant with drinks and table service, expect to pay from 200 PHP ($4 USD).  Knowing that their target customers are primarily tourists, Western food venues can be pricey compared to Filipino food.  Also, some of the ingredients need to be imported, which contributes to the higher cost. Western food (burgers, pizza, pasta, etc.) is much more expensive but is still relatively affordable at around 200 PHP ($4 USD) for a meal and drink.

Fast food like McDonalds will cost around 200 PHP ($4 USD).  A beer at the bar will cost around 50-100 PHP ($1–2 USD).

A week’s worth of groceries will cost between 300-600 PHP ($6-12 USD) per person.  However, food in this country is so inexpensive, and kitchens & refrigerators are hard to come by, I don’t recommend cooking your meals here since there is plenty of delicious street food to eat at very cheap prices. You won’t make it as good as they do and the food is too delicious to miss!

Transportation

There are many modes of transportation available in the Philippines and each varies greatly.

Public Transportation is cheap.  Bus services on the islands are inexpensive.  Local buses (called jeepneys) are the most common type of transportation in towns and cities. The fare is usually between 7-25 PHP ($.20–.50 USD).

On islands without a bus system, a taxi or tricycle is the only form of transport with fares starting at 50-500 PHP ($1-$10) USD for short trips.

Taxis are everywhere, and they’re very cheap.  Most fares shouldn’t cost you more than 500 PHP ($10 USD) around town.

To get between islands, you’ll need to take a boat or to fly.  There are ferries that connect the island together since they aren’t too far apart but, generally speaking, flights are the most realistic option.

Flights between islands usually cost about 2,000-3500 PHP ($40-70 USD).  However, this isn’t the cheapest way to travel.  It’s only recommended if you have limited time.

We recommend booking online to save money using:  Skyscanner ,  momondo ,  Kayak ,  kiwi.com .

Attractions & Activities

Most attractions and activities in the Philippines are pretty cheap. Most attractions throughout the area are FREE to enter, though some of the more well known and popular ones cost 5-100 PHP ($.10-$2 USD) to enter.

Depending on the activity, most day tours only cost around 1,000-1,500 PHP ($20-30 USD), oftentimes less.  You have more bargaining power if you go with a group. If you are expecting to do some climbing, remember to pack some warm layers. It gets cold at the top!

Other activities such as Island Hopping, scuba diving, helmet diving, swimming with whale sharks, jungle trekking, canyoning, ATVs, jet skis, wakeboarding, cruises, parasailing, horseback riding, cultural experiences, and tours can cost as much as 1,250-5,000+ PHP ($25-100+ USD).

The Philippines is one of the least expensive places to learn how to scuba dive. Learning to scuba dive usually costs about 15,000-20,000 PHP ($300-400 USD), but often includes FREE accommodation for the duration of the course, which lasts three or four days.

Always book your tours and activities when you arrive.  Stick to travel agents who are selling on the ground. If a travel agent won’t negotiate with you, move on to the next until you find one that will.  Booking tours online is almost always more expensive.

The following is some of our best advice on traveling to this destination. This is your guide on what you need to know BEFORE you go to Palawan Island!

Tips & Hacks

These Top 10 Tips can help guide you when visiting Palawan Island in the Philippines:

  • Be aware that a tourist VISA is only 30 days. You can extend it upon arrival, or within the first 30 days, for an additional 30 days for a fee of approximately 3,000 pesos.
  • Don’t buy into the fear factor. The Philippines has an unjustified reputation of being a dangerous place. It’s true there are security guards everywhere, but that is to deter theft.
  • Manila is NOT the Philippines. Get outside of the cities to see the real Philippines.
  • Don’t over plan. Boats, buses, and even airplane schedules are notoriously unreliable. Be flexible.
  • Check the weather. The weather varies greatly throughout the Philippines daily.
  • Typhoons can have a huge impact on your plans. Account for this when planning your trip.
  • It’s not cool to raise your voice or show outward frustration in public.
  • Be polite at all times. Realize that your country’s sense of humor may be different from Filipino humor and take this into account when interacting with Filipinos and while in public places.
  • Things move at a slower pace. Accept it … don’t get frustrated … but do account for it.
  • Don’t drink the tap water… but stay hydrated! Save money by buying large bottles (6-10 liters) of water and using it to fill your water bottle or hydration bladder in your backpack.

Money Matters

The Philippines has its own currency called the Philippine Peso.  Banks, ATMs, and money-changers can be found in  Palawan Island.  If you are exploring the neighboring islands or provinces, make sure to bring enough cash that will last until the next time you get to an ATM or bank since most tours, transportation, and budget accommodations only accept cash.

Health & Safety

While overall the Philippines is a safe country to visit, as is Palawan Island, you need to use common sense just as you would in any country, especially when traveling, and in a city, town, or area you are unfamiliar with.

Consult your hotel, resort front desk, or tour guide as they are more likely to give you reliable information about Palawan Island than a random stranger on the street. Be careful when approaching strangers and selective about who you approach. Always pay attention to your gut feeling and follow it.

Staying Connected

You need to have a local-based SIM card in order to stay connected when in the Philippines. Network giants such as Globe and Smart have SIM cards you can use to make calls, send text messages, and also to connect to the Internet. A SIM card costs around 50 PHP ($1 USD) and usually comes with a FREE load worth 50 PHP ($1 USD). You can buy a card containing a code you can enter on your phone to replenish your load or buy an electronic load that is available almost anywhere in the city.

While you may not have problems with signal strength when in the city, it is not always the case when on islands or in remote areas of a province.  So when arranging for transportation pick up, say when renting a boat to take you to and pick you up from the island, it would be best that you make it clear what time you need to be picked up before the boatman leaves.

Recommended Travel Apps

Apps for smartphones and tablets can be useful both before you leave and while you’re traveling.  Most are available for iPhones and Android phones.

Things to Remember

There are some things you need to keep in mind to guide you from doing prohibited or illegal activities in Palawan Island or anywhere in the Philippines.

There is a nationwide ban which prohibits smoking in public places including indoors, the streets, on sidewalks, in restaurants , and on public transportation, requiring smokers to use designated smoking areas.  Selling tobacco to and purchasing from or for minors is also prohibited. Violators are subject to fines (up to 5,000 PHP | $100 USD) and even 4 months in prison.

The minimum legal drinking age is 18.  Alcohol such as beer and hard drinks can easily be bought in grocery and convenience stores.  The most common alcoholic beverage is beer, generally served cold.  Local alcoholic drinks include tuba (coconut wine which is usually very strong) and potent moonshine-like clear liquors made from sugar or fruit.  Imported beer, wine, and name brand hard alcohol are available but expensive.

Drugs are illegal in the Philippines.  Don’t use, buy, or sell any non-prescription drugs while in the Philippines … not even marijuana.  It is considered an especially heinous crime to buy from, for, or sell drugs to children.  The penalties are severe … up to and including death.

Public nudity is illegal in the Philippines and is not tolerated.  Most locals consider it offensive.  There are laws which prohibit provocative and erotic clothing and swimwear, therefore carefully consider your clothings and swimwear choices to make certain they are not too revealing.

Foreigners & Expats

If you are not a Filipino citizen, remember that you are a guest when visiting this country … be certain to act accordingly.  Respect the people, their customs, and the environment and wlidlife. You can be deported and banned … so behave … but have fun and enjoy all that this wonderful destination has to offer.

Coron is a small, laid-back town, but it has a few restaurants serving a variety of international food. If you want to experience the culture of Coron, you can by trying out some of their famous local dishes.

Dining out can be pretty expensive, though, so you'll want to plan your meals strategically. Here are some information on their local cuisine as well as the best places to eat and drink in Coron:

Coron does not disappoint when it comes to their local cuisine. One must-try dish when you're on this side of Palawan is the dish called tamilok, which are woodworms harvested and prepared in kinilaw style.

It is a process wherein the raw seafood will be cooked on vinegar, similar to ceviche. Another one is crocodile sisig, which uses crocodile meat seasoned with onion and chili peppers. You should also try danggit lamayo, which is a fresh, dried rabbitfish marinated in vinegar, pepper, and garlic.

One of the best things to do in Coron is to try out its popular dishes. After all, Palawan as a whole is rich with seafood and other local cuisines.

Now that you know some of their unique specialties, it's time for you to try these at some of Coron's highly recommended best restaurants and bars. Here's a list of the must-try food establishments on the island:

Kawayanan Grill

Kawayanan Grill's speciality Kawayanan Platter

This restaurant with a native motif is perfect for anyone craving for seafood and grilled food. For a sampler plate for sharing, try the Kawayanan Platter (which comes with grilled crab, fish, squid, shrimps, lato (seaweed) and grilled kibiao (clams), which is a local specialty.

Trattoria Altrov'é

Pancetta con Tartufo at Trattoria Altrov’é in Coron, Palawan

This Slovenian-owned restaurant is famous for its pizza and pasta dishes. They also offer vegetarian options and international options. Their pizza is cooked in a wood fire brick oven, served in an authentic Italian style. The ambiance is excellent, plus the restaurant's interiors are reminiscent of a rustic villa.

Bistro Coron

Located in the town center, this restaurant offers Italian and French cuisine. Their primary specialty is pizza and pasta, but they also serve breakfast food such as pancakes and omelets.

Their salad dishes are served with bread, while they offer a variety of dishes such as chicken, pork, and seafood. They also have a variety of wine and drinks such as rum and tonic.

Lolo Nonoy's Food Station

It's a local restaurant serving home-cooked Filipino meals. Some of their sumptuous dishes include chili crab, sinigang (shrimp in sour soup), and gambas (shrimp in garlic). All of their set meals are served with rice and a fried egg. They also offer local beers and appetizers.

When you're in Coron, it's essential to know relevant information regarding the town and the island. For example, the currency and languages. It's a way to respect and blend with their culture and a way to comply with the guidelines on the island:

You can easily withdraw or exchange your money in Coron Town from available ATMs or money changers. Most hotels and restaurant establishments accept credit cards.

And if you're dining in a local food establishment or a tour group, you can settle your payment by paying the local currency Philippine Peso (PHP). Always pay with small bills (50 or 100 PHP) when buying on the streets to avoid the hassle of finding enough change for your money.

The Filipino language is predominantly spoken in Coron, but the majority of the locals can speak English. They also speak other dialects such as Cuyunon and Tinagbanwa. You can ask them about anything, make sure to get your point across as clear as you can with a neutral accent.

It's relatively tropical in Coron, which means you have to protect your skin from the sun's harm. Aside from swimwear and other beachwear necessities, make sure to bring sunblock.

Bring insect repellent with you as well to prevent insect bites. If you plan to snorkel without joining a tour group, bring your snorkeling gear with you. If you plan to trek to Mount Tapyas, bring trekking gear and a flashlight to avoid accidents.

Enjoy a Coron island hopping tour

Most visitors can see the highlights of Coron on four days and three nights tour. For those staying longer, it's easy enough to fill in the extra days with more  island-hopping adventures , particularly wreck diving or a day trip to the historical island of Culion depending on your preference and interests.

Palawan tours, especially the underground river tour and island-hopping tours, are best maximized during these months.

The warmest months are from March to April, with temperatures reaching 33°C. The month with the lowest degrees are from November to February with an average temperature of 23°C but is still dry.

Getting To Palawan

The easiest and most common way to go to Palawan is by riding a plane, with Puerto Princesa as the main jump-off. There are also flights going to El Nido, Coron, and San Vicente. However, more flights are going to Puerto Princesa, and it covers international flights aside from domestic. Read more below to learn how you can travel to Palawan through different routes.

Via Puerto Princesa

palawan tourism website

Via El Nido

palawan tourism website

If you want to explore only or go to El Nido first, the fastest option from Manila is to fly directly to Lio Airport. AirSwift is currently the only airline that services this route with up to four flights per day. The travel time is around 1 hour and 20 minutes.

palawan tourism website

Coron is located on a separate group of islands above the main island of Palawan. You can go here by flying to Francisco B. Reyes Airport or Busuanga Airport for around 1 hour of travel time from Manila. Most major domestic airlines have daily flights going here from significant destinations like Manila, Clark (Pampanga), and Cebu.

Destinations in Palawan

With over 1,700 pristine islands and islets scattered in its four main destinations- El Nido, Puerto Princesa, Coron, and San Vicente, Palawan is home to many attractive destinations that cater to all types of travellers. Whether you are a nature lover, an adrenaline junkie, a culture vulture, a soul searcher, or an influencer, there is always something to see or experience in the beautiful island of Palawan.

Underground River

palawan tourism website

Northern Palawan is home to The Underground River in St Paul Subterranean National Park.  A UNESCO-recognised World Heritage Site and voted as one of the “new Seven Wonders of Nature” in 2012, the underground river is the number one site that propelled the city to the world’s radar, being the world's longest navigable subterranean river.

Visitors are taken by pump boats into St Paul cavern through an underground world of cathedrals with huge stalactites, cave wall formations, and icy lagoons. Although the expert guides usually have high-powered lamps on hand, you can also bring a headlamp to see the attractions better in the dark. There is a limited number of visitors that are allowed to enter the site per day, so it is best to make a reservation as you can’t just walk in.  The exploration usually goes on for one to five hours. For those who want to hang around the area, it is possible to camp overnight at any of the beaches or stay in one of the nearby resorts, so long as you register with the park wardens.  For transportation arrangements, you may ask your hotel about the best way to get there.

Firefly watching

While most people would know Iwahig  to be a penal colony, it houses an entirely different experience.  Come by before dark and you will be treated to a spectacular display of dazzling lights from hundreds of fireflies, floating all around you in a mesmerizing sight. The experience is absolutely romantic, awe-inspiring, and magical.  Just make sure to turn off your flash when taking photos, or you’ll scare the lightning bugs away.

After the tour, enjoy a sit-down dinner at the popular restaurants in the area such as Iwahig Firefly Restaurant, Ka Inato Restaurant or District Seven Restaurant.

Honda Bay - Island Hopping

Many beachgoers skip Puerto Princesa in favor of neighboring Coron or El Nido, but the city has an ace up its sleeve. Honda Bay island-hopping tours are a must-do for any beach lover. Aside from lounging on the beach, swimming, and snorkeling, you can try diving too.

palawan tourism website

Honda Bay is located 10km north of Puerto Princesa and is a shallow expanse of water with a spectacular view of mountain ranges on the main island. Seven low-lying islands make up the bay, most of which are surrounded by mangrove swamp and corals. The best place in Honda Bay to see magnificent corals and giant clams is the Pambato Reef, where you can snorkel by joining a tour from Puerto Princesa.  Some trips also include a stop to Dos Palmas resort on Arreceffi Island, where the day-guest rate will be included in the price of your tour.

El Nido - Big Lagoon

palawan tourism website

A trip to El Nido is not complete without exploring its breathtaking lagoons, particularly the Big Lagoon. Located in Miniloc Island which is 45 minutes away from El Nido, the Big Lagoon is a stunning site with emerald-coloured waters surrounded by dark towering limestone cliffs. Boats are not allowed to go inside, but travellers can get off the boats and ride their kayaks to explore Big Lagoon. Once inside the lagoon, you will see a massive natural swimming hole surrounded by walls made out of limestones.

Coron - Kayangan Lake

Kayangan Lake is the cleanest lake in the Philippines and one of the most popular destinations in the whole of Coron. The water is said to be so clear that you can see all the way down for as deep as 10 meters without even diving. The lake is perfect for kayaking as it is always calm and quiet. It is interesting to note that the most iconic and photographed spot in Coron is the view of the sea from an elevated cliff on the way to Kayangan Lake and not the lake itself.  Kayangan Lake is best experienced either swimming, diving or snorkling. However, if you happen to enjoy hiking as well, you can explore the overlooking mountain to see a 360 degree view of the area.

Best paired with your visit to the Puerto Princesa Underground River, Ugong Rock Adventures involves climbing Ugong Rock, an enormous moss-covered limestone formation where you will see such a glorious view of the mountains and the surrounding rice fields from the summit.

But right before you begin climbing, you’ll be able to see equally astounding untouched mineral deposits in caves. After you’re done taking in everything that the rock’s summit has to offer, you can choose to descend Ugong Rock by a single-rider zipline with a 71-meter drop.

20. Long Beach

Long Beach San Vicente Palawan Tourist Attractions in Palawan

San Vicente is an exquisite municipality located on the northwestern side of the island of Palawan. If you are passing by in this part of the province, don’t forget to visit Long Beach.

You can take a dip into its crystal clear waters, or take a walk to explore the beach. If you just wish to relax, you can simply lounge by the ocean, read a book, listen to the waves, or chat with the friendly locals.

21. Bato Ni Ningning

Bato Ni Ningning - Things to Do in San Vicente Palawan

Another must-visit tourist spot in San Vicente is Bato Ni Ningning, touted as the municipality’s “rock star.” The place refers to the iconic rock sitting on top of a hill in San Vicente’s Barangay Sto. Niño. Its name came from a TV show featuring a character named “Ningning” and how this area where the boulder is became her playground.

Activities to do at Bato Ni Ningning include climbing atop the hill, of course. You can either use a motorbike to ascend or simply walk. The neighborhood’s community also serves up a meal usually consisting of fresh seafood and barbecue which you can enjoy.

22. Boayan Island

Boayan Island - Things to Do in San Vicente Palawan

Boayan Island is the largest island in San Vicente. Hiking is one of the most popular activities here where you can immerse yourself in views of the area from the island’s higher elevations.

You may also explore its reefs, and many tourists who have visited this place say the waters are warm, clean, and peaceful. There are also areas where you can play volleyball and badminton.

The island’s residents can also prepare food and perform music for you. But those tourists also say you must ready yourself for the pesky sandflies that could bite you. They can be allergic, so be sure to bring an insect repellant with you.

You may be focused on visiting the underground river or El Nido while you’re in Palawan, but making some time for Onuk Island will be all worth it.

Best Time to Go to Palawan

The majority of your activities in Palawan are highly dependent on the weather because they're located outdoors. That's why it's best to plan your trip around the dry months in the Philippines and check weather updates first to avoid canceled tours or rough currents, especially when doing island-hopping tours in Palawan .

Dry and Summer Season | November to May

The best time to go to Palawan and its destinations is during the dry summer season, from November to May. The warmest months are from March to April, the summer season in the Philippines. Palawan tours, especially the underground river tour and island-hopping tours, are best maximized during these months.

However, this is also the peak season since most locals prefer to go to islands and beaches during this time. It is highly recommended to book your tours in advance during the summer season. You can even avail of private tours if you’re in a big group if you prefer the exclusivity.

Climate and Weather

You can expect a warm tropical climate almost all year round in palawan, except in the rainy season, usually around july to september. the month with the most rainfall is during september..

The warmest months are from March to April, with temperatures reaching 33°C. The month with the lowest degrees are from November to February with an average temperature of 23°C but is still dry. Here's an overview of the monthly temperature in Palawan:

What to Wear

The best clothes to wear when you’re exploring Palawan are those made with light and breathable fabric that can also let you move freely. If you’re joining island-hopping or beach tours, you can opt to wear aqua shoes for added safety for your feet when swimming.

If you’re joining land or city tours, make sure to wear comfortable clothes as well and sunglasses, hats, and bring an umbrella to shield you from the sun.

How to Get to Palawan

The province of Palawan and its top destinations are accessible via land, sea, and air travel. Puerto Princesa is often the gateway to the province of Palawan since more flights are going here than to other airports. Your choice of entry point will affect your budget and itinerary, so it's best to look into which place best fits your preferences.

Domestic and international flights to Puerto Princesa are available almost daily. If you're coming from Manila, the travel time is just over an hour. There are also flights from Clark (Pampanga), Iloilo, Cebu, and Davao going to Puerto Princesa.

It is the usual route of travelers who want to explore the main island of Palawan, which also includes El Nido and San Vicente/Port Barton, which you can reach by bus or van.

Via El Nido

If you want to explore only or go to El Nido first, the fastest option from Manila is to fly directly to Lio Airport. AirSwift is currently the only airline that services this route with up to four flights per day. The travel time is around 1 hour and 20 minutes.

From Lio Airport, El Nido's Town Proper is easily accessible by land travel of 30 minutes. It is a quicker option than flying from Puerto Princesa then traveling by land to El Nido for 5-6 hours.

From the airport, you can reach Coron's Town Proper by land travel of around half an hour. From Coron, you can reach El Nido by a 4-hour ferry. From El Nido, you can explore Puerto Princesa and San Vicente/Port Barton by land travel.

Via San Vicente/Port Barton

A newer entry point to Palawan is the emerging tourist destination called San Vicente/Port Barton, located between Puerto Princesa and El Nido. From Manila (1 hour) or Clark (Pampanga) (1.5 hours), you can directly fly to San Vicente airport.

From San Vicente, you can also explore Puerto Princesa and El Nido by land travel.

By Ferry via Puerto Princesa

Since it's an island, Palawan is also accessible by ferry rides from Manila. It is, however, more extended in travel time. Your entry point is Puerto Princesa. 2Go Travel has trips for this route every Tuesday and Friday, with a travel time of almost a day.

There are different types of accommodations on board available, so make sure to book in advance if possible to have the most comfortable long travel by sea.

Getting Around Palawan

Traveling around the top attractions in Palawan destinations is possible through different types of land and sea transfers. You may opt to commute, hire private transfers, or rent self-drive vehicles. Take note that not all of these are applicable for long travels or all Palawan destinations, so find out first, which are the best transportation for the distance and place you're traveling to.

Palawan's leading island destinations like Puerto Princesa, El Nido, and San Vicente/Port Barton can be explored by land transfers, while the separate islands of Coron can only be reached by sea transfer from the main island. Here are some of your options when exploring the island of Palawan.

palawan tourism website

If you're coming from Palawan's main island destinations and want to travel to/from destinations like Puerto Princesa, El Nido, and San Vicente/Port Barton, then riding a public bus is one of your options. You have the option to ride an ordinary (non-AC) or air-conditioned bus.

It is convenient for those who travel with big or multiple luggage since there are compartments where you can store them. There's also more legroom making for a more comfortable ride, especially on long trips. The only downside is that the travel time might be longer than vans because buses make stops along the way to pick-up or drop-off passengers.

Riding vans is another land transfer option for long trips in the main island of Palawan when traveling to/from Puerto Princesa and El Nido, and San Vicente/Port Barton. Vans are slightly faster than the buses because they usually do point-to-point transfers (ex: Puerto Princesa to El Nido) and only make stops for lunch or bathroom breaks.

palawan tourism website

Vans alone leave the terminals once it's full of passengers, so you might need to wait, especially during the lean season or hours. There are no big compartments for luggage like buses so it might get crammed inside with little legroom. You also have the option to hire a private van if you're traveling with a big group or want the exclusivity and more legroom.

The iconic jeepneys in the Philippines are also available in Palawan, mainly in the capital Puerto Princesa. These are ideal only when traveling within a town or a city since they follow a specific route.

You'll be sharing the ride with locals or other tourists since a jeepney can accommodate up to 16 people or more depending on its size. If you want to ride a jeepney, it's best to know first which route will pass by the attraction you're going to.

The drivers and locals are your best source of information, so don't be afraid to ask. You can also advise the driver where you're heading so he can notify you if it's already your stop.

By Tricycle or E-Trikes

Another unique Philippine transportation available in Palawan is the tricycle, an auto-rickshaw similar to Thailand's tuk-tuk. These are best for land transfers within towns or cities as well.

Unlike the jeepney, tricycles can travel outside of their routes and drop you off directly to your destination. Regular tricycles are available in the town centers of Puerto Princesa, El Nido, and Coron, while rechargeable electronic tricycles (e-trikes) are available in San Vicente/Port Barton.

However, these can only accommodate 2-4 people depending on the size and layout of the tricycle. You can also hire these as private transfers for a full day of the tour. Rates will depend on your deal with the driver.

The Palawan main island destinations can be explored by land travel, except for Coron, which is located north in a separate group of islands. You can get to Coron from the main island of Palawan by riding a ferry.

The most popular route is El Nido to Coron and vice versa. Travel time is around 4 hours for this route. Make sure to check the dates of ferry transfers so you can plan your itinerary accordingly.

By Motorcycle

For a more rugged type of travel, you can ride a motorcycle (locally called habal-habal) with a local driver or rent a self-drive motorcycle. These are a great option if you're traveling alone or with a buddy. Motorcycles are suitable for both short and long-distance travel, and can even take you through narrow roads to do your exploring.

Where to Stay in Palawan

Choosing your home base in Palawan is crucial if you want to maximize your time in the different destinations you want to cover. Aside from the itinerary, you also need to take into consideration your budget and preferences so that you can get quality rest.

This section will discuss the types of accommodation, neighborhoods, and areas, and recommended hotels, resorts, or guesthouses in Palawan.

These resorts are perfect for those who want to go on a honeymoon in the Philippines . Price points depend on the amenities and how secluded or private the island or beach is.

It's just a matter of choosing the best ones to fit your criteria and preferred location. The higher-priced hotels have complete amenities with magnificent views, while lower prices hotels have basic features.

Camping and Glamping

Want to be one with nature and sleep under the stars while the crashing of the waves lulls you to sleep? Go for camping or glamping type of accommodations in Palawan.

Vacation Rentals

Live like the locals when you book vacation rentals in Palawan. These are privately-owned houses where you're given exclusive use of the units that have a fully-equipped kitchen and furnished bedrooms and living room. These are a good option if you're traveling with a big group and prefer to lessen expenses by preparing your food.

Neighborhoods and Areas

Where you stay during your trip is essential. It will significantly affect where you eat, the duration of travel time, transportation budget, and the vibe of the place. It is why you have to carefully choose which neighborhoods or areas you prefer to stay in before booking accommodation.

Town Center

If you want to be close to restaurants and bars, souvenir shops, and transport terminals, then you should book accommodation in the town centers of Palawan destinations. The majority of accommodations here, however, don't have direct access to the beaches. Most town center accommodations are hotels, backpacker hostels/inns/guesthouses, and vacation rentals.

If you prefer to splurge for exclusivity and privacy, you should check out accommodations like luxury resorts in the islands of Palawan.

Island accommodations usually already have complete amenities and in-island establishments since you can't easily travel to the town centers. Island accommodations are typically limited to just several rooms or villas per island, so it's best to book these in advance.

Towns Outside of Center

A variety of accommodations are available also in towns outside of the town centers in Palawan. These range from budget to luxury accommodations and offer different experiences and vibe, depending on the location and infrastructure. Puerto Princesa, for example, has areas like northwest of the city center, El Nido has areas like Corong-Corong, and San Vicente has areas like Port Barton and Long Beach.

The stop during the hike to the lake is the iconic view of the sea with azure waters, which is usually mistaken as Kayangan Lake.

Lounge in El Nido’s Nacpan Beach

It's also the second-longest in Southeast Asia. Long Beach is three times the length of Boracay's famous White Beach but without the crowds and establishments lined up on the beachfront.

As an island destination, seafood is abundant in Palawan. You can feast on fresh fish, crabs, shrimps, lobsters, and more at an affordable price compared to those served in metropolitan cities. These are also served in island-hopping tours in Palawan, where your boat crew serves a hefty spread in one of your beach or island stops.

Apart from seafood, Palawan is also known for an exotic delicacy called tamilok (woodworm) that are freshly harvested from wood and eaten raw or cooked in vinegar like ceviche. In El Nido, a must-try dish is the Bird's Nest Soup that is made from nests of swiftlets formed by its saliva.

These nests are sourced from the crevices of the limestone cliffs of El Nido. El Nido translates to "The Nest" because of the abundance of this ingredient in the town

Practical Information and Tips

Excited to plan your Palawan trip? Read on below first on some essential travel tips that will make your Palawan trip hassle-free. Sometimes it’s these small things we tend to ignore that make or break a trip.

Bring enough cash in Philippines Peso (PHP) wherever you're going in Palawan. While there are ATM in Puerto Princesa and some town centers, it's better to be always prepared. Make sure to break your cash in smaller bills if you're exploring areas that are not busy. Some high-end restaurants or hotels and resorts accept credit cards, but to be safe, cash is still the best.

The locals of Palawan speak Filipino, Cuyonon, and other dialects and languages. The majority can understand and speak basic English, especially those that work in tourism-related establishments. Try to talk in a neutral accent so locals can easily know what you're saying.

What to Pack

If you plan to do physically-demanding activities like trekking or extreme sports, make sure that you pack the right gear. Some accommodations in Palawan, like El Nido, don't have electricity 24/7, so bring flashlights with you. San Vicente is particularly notorious for sand flies or small mosquitoes during night time, mainly near the beach, so make sure to pack insect repellant.

12 Things to do in Palawan + Tourist Spots

Palawan is home to the Philippines’ most spectacular seascapes and island views. It had easily had easily topped my list of beautiful  tourist spots in the Philippines  from the moment I first made my way to the province many years ago. I have always looked forward to seeing it again because there are so many exciting places to visit, too many to fit in one trip.

Palawan is big. It is its own archipelago composed of roughly 1,780 islands and islets. It isn’t so overwhelmingly massive that you cannot see a lot in one trip, but getting between places takes a while, especially if you are hopping from one island to the next.

If you have 3 days to spend on your vacation, maximize your experience in one destination. Choose between #1, #2 or #3 on this list. If you have one week, you may be able to visit all three, in a rush. To enjoy a more relaxed pace, I recommend that you spend two weeks in Palawan, or more!

Here’s a list of beautiful places to visit in Palawan including top things to do & the best Palawan tourist spots.

To make your trip planning easy, I’ve added links to the locations on Google Maps. Feel free to click/tap on the links posted. Then, use the “save” feature on the Google Maps app. Seeing all your saved locations on the map will help you get started on planning your Palawan itinerary and know the best areas to stay, near places you want to go.

You will find dramatic “over water” scenery in El Nido, located on the northernmost tip of mainland Palawan. This place is not just about pretty sandy beaches and mesmerizing waters. Its islands are filled with towering karst mountains that serve as the perfect backdrop for adventures in this tropical paradise.

How to go :

Most travelers arrive in El Nido on a 1.5-hour flight to Puerto Princesa Airport (PPS), followed by a 5 to 6-hour shuttle ride. If you want to skip the long land journey, fly directly to El Nido from Manila (1 hour), Cebu or Boracay-Caticlan. This is the fastest but more expensive way. In contrast to El Nido’s amazing “over water” views, go to Coron to see stunning underwater views. Here, you can see colorful coral gardens, pristine waters, lots of marine life and even sunken WWII Japanese shipwrecks. Coron can hold its own when it comes to scenic views over the water as well. This paradise is home to hidden lakes and lagoons blessed with emerald to bluish waters, and many fine white sand beaches.

Location : Palawan . Save on Google Maps .

Enjoy an adventure in Linapacan if you want to go off-the-grid and see the “undiscovered” beauty of Palawan. This group of islands can be found spread across the waters between El Nido and Coron. Linapacan had become viral when it was mentioned in a list of places with the clearest waters in the world to swim before you die.

To get to Linapacan, you can go via Coron, which is nearer to the northern islands, or via El Nido, which is nearer to the southern islands. There are no regularly scheduled ferries from both destinations, so you will need to be flexible with your itinerary if you want to go on a passenger boat. From Coron, the boat trip to San Miguel, Linapacan Island takes around 4 hours. At San Miguel you can charter a boat to reach the other islands. From Sibaltan Beach located on the east coast of El Nido, a chartered boat to Maosonan and Magransing Islands takes around 3 hours.

Overlooking Taytay Fortress, in Taytay, Palawan, Philippines

Taytay can be found just south of El Nido. On your way to or from Puerto Princesa, stop over the town proper and visit the Taytay Fort (Fuerza de Santa Isabel), one of the best preserved Spanish-colonial stone fortresses remaining in the Philippines. Extend your trip on a tour to Taytay’s many offshore islands that are still largely unspoiled and undiscovered by mass tourism.

Taytay is around 1 hour south of El Nido or 4 hours from Puerto Princesa by private car. By public transport, shuttle vans and buses can take you to Taytay directly from Puerto Princesa. From El Nido, go on a bus or shuttle to Taytay highway intersection. From there, the town proper is a short tricycle ride away.

6. San Vicente

palawan tourism website

Long Beach in San Vicente, Palawan, Philippines

San Vicente is another town that you can visit on your way between Puerto Princesa and El Nido, in mainland Palawan. This sleepy town is home to Long Beach. At 14 kilometers long, it had been making rounds online for being the longest white sand beach in the Philippines. On my trip there, however, I found that it wasn’t exactly all-white and the uninterrupted length of the sandy stretch was only about 8 kilometers. Still, I was in awe of how long it was. To compare, San Vicente Long Beach, even at 8km, is twice as long as Boracay’s famed White Beach. The best part of going was that I had I did not share the entire beach with any tourist crowds.

The fastest way is by flying directly to the new San Vicente Airport. You can also go by land from Puerto Princesa. Travel time to San Vincente takes around 4 hours from Puerto Princesa by private car. By public transport, you can find shuttle vans at San Jose Terminal, Puerto Princesa to take you directly to San Vicente. From El Nido, you may need to drop off at Roxas Terminal and get on a shuttle or minibus from there. Travel time from Roxas Terminal takes up to 2 hours.

Port Barton is another spot to travel in the town of San Vicente. This quiet village is a smaller and more laid-back version of El Nido. Here, you can go about and explore many pristine off-shore islands and beaches on island hopping tours, at a cheaper price that boat tours offered in El Nido.

Port Barton is also roughly 4 hours away from Puerto Princesa or El Nido by land. You can find direct shuttle vans to Port Barton from both locations. From San Vicente Poblacion / Long Beach, you can charter a boat to get to Port Barton. Travel time by boat takes around 1 hour.

8. Cuyo Islands

Cuyo Fortress Church, in Cuyo Island, Palawan, Philippines

Go even more off-grid in Cuyo. This remote group of islands is located in the vast open waters of the Sulu Sea, between the islands Palawan and Panay. During the 1800s, it became the province’s second capital (after Taytay). Here, you can find the well-preserved Cuyo Fortress Church built during the Spanish-colonial era as well as many small islands and diving sites.

Puerto Princesa to Iloilo City RORO (slow) ferries make a stopover at Cuyo Island. From Puerto Princesa, the sea journey takes around 18 hours. Meanwhile, the trip from Iloilo takes around 12 hours.

Amanpulo Resort offers twice daily flights, directly from Manila to Pamalican Island. Flight duration is around 1 hour.

10. Tubbataha Reef & Cagayancillo Islands

Location : Cagayancillo, Palawan . Save on Google Maps .

The Tubbataha Reef is another remote spot to see in Palawan. This 970 square kilometer national park is especially a must visit to divers. It is the place to see one of the highest biodiversity of marine life in the world. Along with the Puerto Princesa Underground River, Tubbataha Reef is one of six UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Philippines.

The easiest way is to go on a liveaboard dive boat from Puerto Princesa. The boats typically leave the city in the evening and arrive at Tubbataha Reef early morning.

11. Tabon Caves & Quezon

palawan tourism website

Tabon Caves Complex in Quezon, Palawan, Philippines

Location : Quezon, Palawan . Save on Google Maps .

Another place to go for off-the-beaten-path adventures is Tabon Caves in Quezon town of South Palawan. This important archaeological site is where the Tabon Man was found. Filipinos who have been attentive in history class may remember that the fossilized remains of the Tabon Man was believed to be the earliest human remains known in the Philippines (until the discovery of the Callao Man in Peñablanca, Cagayan Province). For travelers, the Tabon Cave Complex is a great place to explore cave formations and learn about the archaeology diggings. There are also a few off-shore islands and beaches nearby.

Quezon is around 2.5 to 3 hours south of Puerto Princesa by land. From San Jose terminal, ride a shuttle van to Quezon poblacion. Then, a chartered pumpboat to Lipuun Point / Tabon Caves Complex, which takes around 30 to 45 minutes, from the pier. palawan tourism website

Onuk Island / Roughton Island in Balabac, Palawan, Philippines

Balabac is the southernmost islands in Palawan. It is so far south that Sabah in East Malaysia is nearer to Balabac than Puerto Princesa. The main draw here is 31 gorgeous islands still vastly undiscovered by tourist crowds. These islands are surrounded by pristine, crystal clear waters and white sand beaches. Yes, the sandy shores of many beaches here are a blinding white to off-white, many even have a blushed pink hue! If you’re looking for the best beaches & most vibrant waters in the Philippines, Balabac is worth a spot at the top of your bucketlist.

To get to Balabac from Puerto Princesa, you will need to make a transit stop in Rio Tuba, Bataraza where you catch boats to the islands of Balabac. Rio Tuba is 4 to 5 hours south of Puerto Princesa by land. From Rio Tuba, you can go on a passenger boat to Balabac Island (mainland). Or, hire a boat for your island hopping tour.
