Comedian Peter Kay has announced he is returning to stand-up before the end of the year, with his first live comedy tour in 12 years.

“If there’s ever a time people need a laugh, it’s now,” wrote Kay on Facebook when he announced the tour. “And, with the cost of living at an all-time high, ticket prices are starting from £35. The same price they were on my previous tour in 2010.”

The tour will traverse the length of the UK and Ireland, starting in 2022 and continuing into 2023.

This comes after the comedian already surprised fans with “secret” shows over the past few weeks, with audiences delighted to see Kay’s return to the stage.

Soon after the annoucement, Kay said that he couldn’t believe it had made headline news. “I should only be on the news if I’m dead, not if I’m on tour,” he joked.

“You’ve got to meet people halfway, it’s bad times, plus that’s why people need a laugh,” he added.

“I think that’s why it was on the news because it was something happy for once and not doom and gloom.”

In addition to his tour, Kay has announced that he will also be performing a monthly residency at the O2 Arena, at Greenwich. He will become the first comedian to be given his own residency at the venue.

“There’s basically been me and Prince who have done it and look what happened to him,” Kay joked, making reference to the US musician’s death in 2016.

Here’s when and where Peter Kay will be performing and how to get tickets .

Peter Kay fans can rejoice as the comic has announced his return to stand-up comedy with his first live tour in 12 years.

The 49-year-old comedian, who has been largely absent from the public eye for the last four years, will embark on an arena tour.

Kay cancelled his last tour in December 2017, citing “unforeseen family circumstances”.

Here’s everything you need to know.

What has he said?

His comeback was announced during an advertisement break in the series launch of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! on ITV.

He said: “It’s good to get back to what I love doing best, stand-up comedy, and if there’s ever a time people need a laugh it’s now.”

Following the announcement, Kay’s official website appeared to crash briefly under increased online traffic.

A poster for the event featured Kay holding a sign reading, “Better late than never” and described a ticket to his shows as an “ideal Christmas gift”.

Kay, from Bolton, has been largely out of the spotlight in recent years.

He returned to the stage in August 2021 for two special charity events to raise money for Laura Nuttall, a then 20-year-old with an aggressive type of brain cancer called glioblastoma multiforme.

There was also a brief return in January 2021 when he appeared on BBC Radio 2 to chat to Cat Deeley – who was filling in after Graham Norton left the station – about his love of music, mixtapes and the musical Mamma Mia.

He also made a surprise appearance at a charity screening of his series Car Share in 2018.

Over the last few years, Kay has delighted fans with his hit Bafta-winning TV series Car Share and stand-up routines.

When and where will the tour take place?

Dates spanning from this December to August 2023.

It will be his first live tour since 2010, when he scored the Guinness World Record for the biggest selling run of all time, playing to more than 1.2 million people.

How much will tickets cost for Peter Kay’s new tour?

Prices for the show will start from £35, rising to £135 for the most expensive seats. The comedian says ticket prices for the tour were set to match those of 2010.

On the See Tickets website, tickets for his shows start at £41.55 instead of £35, but this is due to the inclusion of admin and booking fees. The price of the tickets then increases further, depending on which type of seat you purchase.

After £41.55, the seating then goes up to £58.05 and £74.55 which all include admin and booking fees through See Tickets . The most expensive 'best seat package' costs £151 (£135 before fees) and includes a top price seat for the show, a limited edition Peter Kay gift, a Peter Kay show programme and a Peter Kay VIP laminate and lanyard.

How to get tickets for Peter Kay’s 2023 tour

New dates have just been added due to unprecedented demand

Peter Kay,  the iconic Bolton-born comic, will be performing  his first live tour in more than a decade in 2024. The comedian holds the 2010 Guinness Book of World Records for the biggest-selling comedy tour of all time, so you can bet that getting your hands on some tickets this time round is going to be tricky (but worth it).

When the first batch of tickets went live, O2 and Virgin said the sale was ‘by far the highest demand we’ve ever seen for priority tickets in 15 years’ and the O2 priority ticket website crashed as a result. More dates were added to the tour, but for any disappointed fans who couldn’t tickets for any of those either, we’ve got great news.  Kay added 11 new dates in 2023-2025, bringing the total number of shows to 121 for the ‘Better Late Than Never’ tour.

These dates span Glasgow, Newcastle, Birmingham, Sheffield, Manchester, Leeds, London, Dublin, Belfast, Nottingham and Liverpool, so there’s bound to be one vaguely nearly you.

If you’re planning to catch one of Kay’s live shows as he tours the country in 2024, h ere’s everything to know about his return and how to get tickets.

How can I get tickets?

Tickets are available on  Ticketmaster , See Tickets and the Ticket Factory .

H ow much do tickets cost?

Luckily, Peter Kay understands that times are hard as the cost-of-living crisis continues to squeeze our wallets, which is why he’s said he will be keeping the price of tickets the same as his previous tours: they start from £35.

Why did the last tour get cancelled?

This tour is a comeback after the comedian cancelled a 14-month long stand-up tour back in 2017.

In a statement on Twitter at the time, Kay said: ‘Due to unforeseen family circumstances I deeply regret that I am having to cancel all of my upcoming work projects.’

What has he said about the tour?

Kay said: ‘It’s good to get back to what I love doing best, standup comedy, and if there’s ever a time people need a laugh it’s now.

‘And with the cost of living at an all-time high, ticket prices are starting from £35. The same price they were on my previous tour in 2010.’

Kay also said that he couldn’t believe that the original tour announcement had made headline news and that he was ‘overwhelmed’ by the reaction from fans. ‘I should only be on the news if I’m dead, not on tour!’ he said.

Is he doing a special residency in London?

Peter Kay will perform a monthly residency at London’s O2 Arena in Greenwich, starting on December 16 and running until November 18 2023. The venue has a capacity of 20,000.

Where are the shows on the tour?

Peter Kay’s tour will start on December 2 2022 at the Manchester AO Arena, and his run will end on August 11 2023 at the Utilita Arena Sheffield. There will then be five further dates across 2025. The tour will travel through Birmingham, Liverpool, Leeds, Belfast, Newcastle, Dublin, Cardiff and Glasgow.

Co-op Live finally hosts first gig after spate of cancellations

£450m Manchester venue opens doors with Elbow concert two weeks after debris falling from ceiling forced shutdown

It has been billed by its American owners as the greatest music venue ever built: a state-of-the art arena to put Manchester back on the musical map.

But after a series of humiliating setbacks, the £450m Co-op Live – now referred to by some as Co-flop Live – opened its doors with a stagger rather than a swagger with a long-delayed concert by the local band Elbow on Tuesday night.

The gig came nearly two weeks after the 23,500-capacity arena cancelled a show by the US star A Boogie Wit da Hoodie when part of a ventilation system crashed from the ceiling shortly after the doors had opened .

It was the latest problem to affect the UK’s biggest indoor arena, whose backers include Harry Styles and the Abu Dhabi-based owners of Manchester City, after power supply problems caused the cancellation of shows by the comedian Peter Kay and US rockers the Black Keys.

The Elbow frontman, Guy Garvey, said he wanted to open the venue “properly” as he referenced the teething problems at the start of his band’s two-hour set.

To cheers, he said: “Everybody that’s been working on this building has been so excited today, so nervous but so excited. There was already electricity in the air before you lot got in today and now it’s thoroughly amped up. I hope you can feel it.”

Before Elbow’s concert, the venue’s bullish boss, Tim Leiweke, said he was confident Co-op Live was now the “safest building in the world”.

As he toured the arena’s VIP section – which looks similar to an airport departure lounge, with the same boozy vibe – Leiweke appeared emotional as he described the toll of the last few weeks.

“It’s been tough. I’m emotional because this is a big deal and we want to do right by Manchester,” the Missouri-born executive said.

“It’s never easy getting these things built with Brexit and Covid but at the end of the day we’ve built the greatest arena ever built – for Manchester. It’s been tough. I’ve apologised to those [fans] we disrupted … now the building is open and will be for another 30 years.”

Leiweke, the chief executive of the venue’s manager, the US-based Oak View Group, said some parts of the arena would not be completed for another six months, adding that it was normal for buildings to have an extensive “punch list” to tackle after opening.

He added: “I’ve never opened a building without thousands of things that need to be done. These buildings have a life of their own. We will be back here a few more times [in the coming months].”

Earlier, Leiweke told the BBC that A Boogie Wit da Hoodie’s show was cancelled after one of 96 pre-manufactured parts crashed to the auditorium floor from the ceiling after the soundcheck, and as fans had begun making their way inside. It could have been “catastrophic” if it had happened 15 minutes later, he added.

The incident meant bosses had to cancel gigs by the American mega-star Olivia Rodrigo and Take That. In perhaps the ultimate humiliation, its fierce rival – Manchester’s AO Arena – had to step in to host Take That.

Fans who arrived for Elbow expecting a fully finished state-of-the-art venue may have been left surprised that parts of it still resembled a building site. Workers in hi-vis jackets and hard hats were toiling away until shortly before the concert on Tuesday night.

Neil Forkin, 54, said he had been excited for the gig for weeks but that at some points feared it might never go ahead.

after newsletter promotion

“Some people feel it’s a national embarrassment but I don’t,” he said, queueing to get in with his wife, Melanie, 47. “I see it as an exciting new venue. There will be naysayers but there’s a lot of positives.”

Forkin, who works in commercial real estate finance, said he felt the arena had fallen victim to hubris: its opening date was too ambitious with the building not yet complete.

But he would not let any safety concerns spoil his night: “Should we have brought hard hats in case a bolt falls from the ceiling?”

Kelda Ross, a teacher, said she hoped the venue would be “safer than ever” after the extra checks.

The 36-year-old said she hoped Co-op Live would bring Manchester’s musical legacy into the modern day and attract the world’s best new performers. “The current [AO] Arena is in need of an update so to have this brand new venue will raise the profile of Manchester,” she said. “I think it’ll recover from a rocky start.”

The venue’s opening plans began to unravel when thousands of tickets were cancelled to a test event headlined by Rick Astley on 20 April with only a few hours notice due to safety concerns. Gary Roden resigned as Co-op Live’s general manager the following week after a PR own goal when he said grassroots venues were often “poorly run” – shortly after he had cancelled opening shows by the Lancashire-born comedian Kay.

Garvey closed the Elbow concert on Tuesday by telling fans that “no night had been happier than this night” on the band’s UK tour, adding that they had “housewarmed this beautiful new venue”.

Co-op Live is scheduled to host shows by Kay, Eric Clapton, Nicki Minaj and Barry Manilow in the next fortnight.

Here’s what Peter Kay said to Jason Manford about the Manchester Co-Op gig delay fiasco

Peter Kay's upcoming gigs at the troubled venue have been pushed back twice

Jason Manford, Peter Kay

Jason Manford has revealed what Peter Kay told him in response to the Manchester Co-Op’s continued delays which pushed the latter’s opening week gigs back twice.

  • READ MORE:  UK grassroots venues “going over a cliff” without urgent government action or investment from arenas

The brand new 23,500-capacity venue – the largest in the UK once it officially opens – has infamously been plagued by teething problems that have caused multiple delays.

Comedian Kay was supposed to open the venue with gigs on April 23 and 24 , but following  a test event featuring Rick Astley on April 22, the gigs were  “regretfully” pushed back to April 29 and 30  with the venue citing technical issues.

The shows were then postponed a second time , with Kay now scheduled to perform on May 23 and 24. The comedian reacted by telling fans of his disappointed, sharing: “I know I can’t believe it either.”

My apologies once again but unfortunately the Co-op Live still isn’t ready and so, as yet, remains untested for a large-scale audience. Consequently, they are having to reschedule my two shows yet again (I know I can’t believe it either). Read the full statement below. pic.twitter.com/QgiIdiNVlu — Peter Kay (@peterkay_co_uk) April 26, 2024

However, fellow comedian Manford has since revealed that Kay was somewhat able to see the funny side of the whole fiasco.

Appearing on Lorraine last Friday (May 10), the performer was speaking about his 2025 ‘A Manford All Seasons’ comedy tour, during he will perform at Manchester’s Co-Op Live next October.

Discussing the tour locations, guest host Christine Lampard said (via The Mirror ): “Hopefully Manchester, if the Co-op Live venue is finally up and running!”

In response, Manford said: Yeah, it’s funny actually because obviously Peter Kay was supposed to be the first act to play it and we spoke the other day about it. I’m playing it October 2025 and he said: ‘It’ll be you, first comic on at this rate!’ Hopefully it will be done by then!”

Earlier this month the venue was also forced to cancel a performance  by rapper  A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie last minute due to a “venue-related technical issue”, followed by the cancellation of Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Guts’ world tour gigs .

A spokesperson for the venue told  Manchester Evening News  that the technical issue was caused by part of an air conditioning unit falling from the gantry inside the venue during soundcheck. Nobody was injured.

Gary Roden, the boss of the new arena, resigned in April following the plethora of issues and controversy – including making the claim that grassroots music venues were “poorly run” .

As things currently stand, the Co-Op Live Arena has said that Elbow ’s show on Tuesday (May 14) will now serve as the venue’s much-postponed opening night .

Legendary rock band deliver ‘spellbinding’ performance as Co-op Live arena finally opens

Guy Garvey of Elbow

After countless setbacks, the UK’s biggest live music venue, Co-op Live in Manchester , has finally opened up to fans, and they weren’t left disappointed.

The inaugural show on Tuesday night hosted a concert from the band Elbow , following the recent release of their 10th studio album, Audio Vertigo.

The £365million venue was supposed to open in April with comedian Peter Kay, but the venue’s big night has been repeatedly pushed back due to ‘technical issues.’

The arena cancelled three shows at the last minute since then, including Olivia Rodrigo ’s Guts tour and rapper A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie’s concert, which was scrapped at the last minute when part of the ventilation system became detached.

It’s since been reported that the Manchester spot has completed an inspection and are ‘satisfied’ with the result, which found the ventilation issue was an ‘isolated’ fault.

On Tuesday, the £365million venue officially opened its doors to ‘apprehensive’ fans, before rock band Elbow, who hail from Manchester, took to the stage after support act The Waeve performed.

Frontman Guy Garvey told the audience those who had been working on the building had been ‘so excited today, so nervous and so excited’, in a video shared on X.

‘There was already electricity in the air before you lot got in here and now it’s fully amped up. I hope you can feel it,’ he said.

Concert-goers branded the show ‘spellbinding’ while @foofoo50 said: ‘Seriously impressed with the arena. Glad the local lads of Elbow are the openers.’

‘A grand band for a grand opening,’ @GBSticks11 added.

A grand band for a grand opening. (I could make a joke about needing a hard hat but I won’t.) The magnificent @Elbow at the newly finished (probably) Coop arena. Very impressive – aside from the parking cost. But I’ll let them off cos they gave us free beer. pic.twitter.com/jcAd8Pg47m — GB Sticks (@GBSticks11) May 14, 2024

Issues at the arena began after a test event in April led to the rescheduling of comedian Kay’s stand-up dates.

Kay, 50, who was meant to be the ‘first artist in the world to perform at Manchester Co-op Live’, according to promotional posters, had his shows postponed twice as the venue was not ready to open.

The problems also led to the venue rescheduling a Black Keys gig.

The venue then planned for US rapper A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie to open the arena on May 1, but it was called off just over an hour before his performance and after doors had opened to fans – due to the ventilation system becoming detached.

Before Tuesday evening’s gig, Steve Jones, 58, from Rhyl in North Wales, told the PA news agency he was a ‘bit apprehensive’ about everything going to plan.

Co-op Live arena as Elbow performs

‘Hopefully everything goes OK,’ he said. ‘It’s been a long time in the coming, seeing all the other ones that have been cancelled, because we live 60-odd miles away and then you’re thinking “hope everything goes OK”.’

Nigel Thomas, 56 and from Chester, had come with family members, with one relative travelling from Hong Kong to see the band. He said recent cancellations at the arena had left him feeling ‘scared’ and ‘worried’.

‘We (were) worried if it would go to another venue, possibly just be postponed, and we wouldn’t all be able to meet and make it happen, so tonight feels a little bit weird, still a bit apprehensive that it hasn’t actually started yet, so we’ve still got a few hours to go.’

Neville Lawson, 58, from Durham, spoke to PA alongside Jo Elliott, 53, from Middlesbrough.

Lawson, who was wearing an Elbow T-shirt from a concert he attended 21 years ago, said: ‘We’ve had the tickets for a while, we didn’t think it was going to come off actually.

‘To think a Manchester band, which Elbow are, the first band to open the arena, it’s amazing isn’t it. To think of all these other (acts) – Peter Kay, Take That – and all of them, we’ve got a Manchester band opening up, it’s brilliant.

‘(We have been) worried it was going to cancel, (and) it’s not going to happen. Or are we going to get moved to the other arena in Manchester which is just a big aircraft hangar really.’

Tim Leiweke, chief executive of the arena’s operator Oak View Group, said fittings in the arena had been ‘triple checked’ after the May incident, which could have been ‘catastrophic’ if it had happened just 15 minutes later.

He told BBC News he was confident it was ‘the safest building in the world’, adding there had been ‘no way’ operators could have known the ventilation was not installed correctly.

‘They didn’t put the bolts in. It wasn’t visible to the eye,’ he said. ‘And it fell out. So we [have since] got that double checked and triple checked. We’ve looked at thousands of bolts up in that ceiling now. We’ve looked at the life safety lines. And we were going to take our time to make sure we did this right.

‘There was no way we were opening the doors until we checked every screw and every bolt and every one of those 95 shafts.’

The ventilation issue meant scheduled performances by US pop star Olivia Rodrigo and British band Keane were postponed, while a series of shows by Take That were moved to the AO Arena in Manchester.

Last week, East Sussex rock band Keane announced their postponed gig has been rescheduled for October 19, while new dates are yet to be announced for Olivia.

Take That

The venue also added a headline performance from US rapper Travis Scott, who will be bringing his Circus Maximus Tour on July 13.

The Co-op Live arena is a joint venture between Oak View Group, co-founded by Leiweke and US music mogul Irving Azoff, and City Football Group, owned by billionaire United Arab Emirates royal and deputy prime minister Sheikh Mansour.

Harry Styles is among the other investors.

Following the cancellations, Co-op Live released a statement earlier this week reading: ‘Following the incident in the bowl on 1 May 2024, an inspection and verification report was undertaken by SES subcontractors.

‘In consultation with Manchester City Council, responsible authorities, and wider stakeholders, we are satisfied with the process and outcome of the investigation identifying the HVAC nozzle as an isolated manufacturing default.

‘This is a standard process of review in any venue when such an incident occurs. We now look forward to welcoming fans to Elbow’s opening performance on 14 May 2024.’

A Council statement added: ‘The Council has received documentation that confirms that the venue has carried out the necessary investigations following the incident with their air ducting that provides reassurance that they have considered their duties under Health and Safety law.’
