Padraig Harrington overcomes double bogey with birdies on final 2 holes at windy Newport Beach

  • Copy Link copied

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Padraig Harrington won the Hoag Classic on Sunday at windy Newport Beach Country Club for his seventh PGA Tour Champions victory, rebounding from a double bogey with birdies on the final two holes.

After driving left into trouble and dropping two strokes on the par-4 16th, Harrington made a downhill 15-footer on the par-3 17th and got an 8-footer to fall on the par-5 18th for a one-stroke victory over Thongchai Jaidee.

Harrington closed with a 2-under 69 to finish at 14-under 199. The 52-year-old Irishman will be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in June. He won British Open in 2007 and 2008 and the PGA Championship in 2008.

Jaidee, from Thailand, also had a 69, parring the 18th after leaving his approach short and pitching through the green.

Miguel Angel Jimenez, the Spaniard playing alongside Harrington and Jaidee in the final group, bogeyed the 17th in a 68 that left him two strokes back.

Stephen Ames was fourth at 11 under after a 67. Jerry Kelly (67) and K.J. Choi (68) were 10 under, and Steve Stricker (70) was another stroke back.

Padraig harrington survives two final-round double bogeys to win hoag classic newport beach, share this article.

pga champions tour newport beach

Padraig Harrington was looking to go 3-for-3 in closing out 36-hole leads on the PGA Tour Champions on Sunday at the Hoag Classic Newport Beach.

He started the final round at 12 under, a shot ahead of Thongchai Jaidee, who shot a 62 on Friday. Harrington ran into a big trouble twice but rebounded both times.

Harrington’s first trip-up was a double-bogey on the par-3 fourth hole which was playing 140 yards Sunday. He had a second double bogey on the par-4 16th hole, and that one proved more costly as it dropped him to 12 under and out of the lead a shot back of Jaidee and Miguel Angel Jimenez.

On the 191-yard, par-3 17th, however, Harrington hit his ball pin high and then drained the putt for a bounce-back birdie to tie for the lead once again. On 18, Harrington curled one around seemlingly all sides of the cup before it dropped for a closing birdie, setting off an extended fist pump from the Irishman.

Harrington closed with a 2-under 69 to win for the seventh time in 37 starts on the senior circuit. Jaidee was solo second a shot back. Jimenez was solo third, two shots back. Stephen Ames was solo fourth at 10 under.

Defending tournament champion Ernie Els was tied for 33rd. Jim Furyk made his 2024 season debut after recovering from a back injury and also tied for 33rd. Fred Couples withdrew after nine holes during the second round.

The tour stays in southern California for the Galleri Classic at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage.

Next week the Hoag Classic welcoming PGA champions takes Newport and all of the SoCal golf world by storm, unveiling an outstanding week of sport, celebration and community outreach hosted by Newport Beach Country Club.

All the action benefits the life-saving work of the Hoag Hospital healthcare umbrella covering multiple institutes involved in cutting edge research and all aspects of treatment, recovery and patient care.

On Tuesday, the Hoag Classic Hall of Fame Community Breakfast welcomes golf legend David Duval at Hotel VEA, Newport Beach, for a lively one-on-one interview and interaction with the crowd. Then, on Wednesday , Aston Martin Newport Beach, a major tournament sponsor, produces the much-anticipated Aston Martin Newport Beach Legends Pro-Am. More than 400 golfers are registered to join the pros.

The roar of the crowd rises as golf pros make the shot at a previous Hoag Classic.

Tee times for the opening round Friday, presented by City National Bank, are set for 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Round 2 on Saturday is billed as Military Appreciation Day, welcoming both active duty and veterans with complimentary admission including a guest. Sponsor CoreLogic makes this possible. At the end of play, a Military Honoree Recognition Reception is planned to take place on the 17th and 18th greens. A surprise celeb entertainer, yet to be revealed, will entertain the golf fans.

Fans view the Hoag Classic gather on the greens in the shadow of Fashion Island.

The final Sunday round of golf at Newport Beach Country Club may determine if defending champion Ernie Els will take the trophy for a second year in a row. Competing in the legends field will be local fan favorite and former Hoag Classic champ Fred Couples joining Billy Andrede , John Daly , Jay Haas , Kirk Triplett , Duffy Waldorf , Corey Pavin , Tom Lehman , and Y.E. Yang , among many more. Kingston Technology sponsors play on the final day with an awards ceremony and celebration capping the afternoon.

Sunday is also “Student Day” on the greens. Young people 18 and under will receive complimentary admission and a special chance to meet the players at the Kingston Technology Autograph Arena. On the first tee, a chipping clinic will have kids at 2 p.m. on the chipping green for a little real competition. In addition, Kingston joins Hoag Charity Sports funding $70,000 in student scholarships through Hoag for employee family grants. A Sunday reception will present the awards to deserving students advancing their educational goals.

Of course, all week long the parties and hospitality tents will draw crowds raising a toast to their favorite players and to the charitable community work of Hoag. VEA Newport Beach Resort will be a central gathering locale for much of the social action, beginning with an opening event unfolding on Friday.

Of special note this year, a unique experience is offered. It’s billed as the “Newport Beach Luxury Club” in conjunction with the planned Ritz-Carlton Residences on the edge of Fashion Island, adjacent to the Hotel VEA and overlooking Newport Beach Country Club and the ocean. The exclusive sponsor hospitality package pulls out all stops for the select Classic supporters who are seeking the best of the best experience on and off the course during the weeklong event.

“Guests who purchase the special pass will be entitled to enter an exclusive area near the VEA, along with valet parking, shuttle service to the tournament, a private space in the NBCC clubhouse and entrance to two exclusive spectator structures on the No. 5 and No. 17 tees, where menus curated by the executive chefs of the Pendry Newport Beach and Balboa Bay Resort will be available,” stated Tournament Executive Director Scott Easton .

Joining the classic executive team this year, Easton, 56, comes with a resume boasting top level experience in association with major national event productions including shows with Live Nation and sports events with Desert Charities.

“I got my dream job,” Easton said. “This event is one of the finest on the PGA Champions Tour, and it is because it takes place here at Newport Beach Country Club.”

Golfers putt a final stroke as the crowd gathers to watch from hospitality tents.

The sports and entertainment pro explains that the success is in large part due to local enthusiasm and support. Easton and team will manage some 800 volunteers making the tournament happen. With a purse of $2 million and even more world-class golfers including Colin Montgomerie , Vijay Singh , Jim Furyk , and Steve Strickers , the Hoag Classic will be televised on the Golf Channel and seen on some 145 countries including outlets provided by PGA Tour overseas television associates. Since its early days, the Hoag Classic on the PGA Tour has raised more than $25 million for charity. That’s a qualified hole-in-one like no other.

With different issues, Stricker, Harrington and Langer ready to roll at Harbor Shores

pga champions tour newport beach

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. — Three of the favorites this week in the 84 th  KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship — Steve Stricker of Wisconsin, Padraig Harrington of Ireland and Bernhard Langer of Germany — find themselves in various states of physical health.

The defending champion , 57-year-old Stricker, is rested and ready to go after sitting out last week’s PGA Championship at Valhalla outside Louisville, Ky. The 52-year-old Harrington has been battling a stiff neck which partly explains his missed cut (77-75) at the PGA, a major title he won in 2008 at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

And then there’s the 66-year-old Langer, the all-time leading winner on the PGA Champions Tour with 46 victories, 12 of which are considered senior major titles. Langer literally limps into the tournament still recovering from Achilles tendon surgery in late January, an injury he suffered while playing pickleball.

More: Alker’s 8-under 63 continues hot rookie season for Senior PGA Championship at Harbor Shores

When the 156 players tee off Thursday at the par-71 Golf Club of Harbor Shores, a design of legendary player and architect Jack Nicklaus, they will find the walk much longer than the listed 6,852 yards. There are huge gaps between some greens and tees on the course that meanders through reclaimed Whirlpool Corporation property that the Paw Paw River bisects on its way to the St. Joseph River which empties into nearby Lake Michigan.

Because of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the extremely fit Langer, who literally has difficulty walking, has use of a golf cart on the course where he has finished third three times (2014, 2016 and 2022) and fourth (2012). Langer won the Senior PGA in 2017 when it was held at Trump National outside Washington, D.C.

“I had to apply for ADA,” said Langer, who tied for 31 st  in his first tournament back on May 5, the rain-shortened Insperity Invitational and then showed some old form finishing tied for eighth in the senior major Regions Tradition on May 12. “If it hadn’t been for that, I couldn’t be playing golf anywhere right now. I’m just happy to be back out competing. Funny thing is I can play golf but I can’t walk, so it makes no sense.”

Count Langer among those who enjoy playing Nicklaus-designed courses. “They make you think, they make you play for one spot to another, not just necessarily hit it anywhere you want,” added Langer, who has two Masters titles, 46 senior victories and 12 senior major titles.

As the defending champion of the KitchenAid Senior PGA, which he won last year at Fields Ranch East in Frisco, Texas, by beating Harrington in a one-hole playoff, Stricker could have played in last week’s PGA Championship. But he opted instead for rest at home in Madison, Wis., with wife Nicki and daughters Bobbi and Izzy. Bobbi, who competed in the Epson Tour’s Four Winds Invitational at South Bend Country Club last year, will carry her father’s bag this week just eight miles west of where Stricker once competed in the Western Amateur at Point O’Woods, making “Sweet Sixteen” for weekend match play in 1988 and ’89.

Izzy was on the bag for last year’s Senior PGA at Frisco, and it was Nicki who carried the bag when Stricker won the 2019 U.S. Senior Open at Warren Golf Course with a 19-under total of 261.

More: Stricker seeking Michiana “sweep” when Senior PGA stops at Harbor Shores

Stricker, too, likes Harbor Shores where he will play for the first time after having to withdraw from the 2022 event here because of COVID-19 precautions.

“I feel good — it’s great to be back,” Stricker said. “I went in here with an open mind (for Tuesday’s pro-am), and I enjoy it. It’s a great shape, the kind of course where you have to pick your spots. There is a lot of variety out here.”

Harrington, who won the Hoag Classic in Newport Beach, Calif., on March 24, is competing for the fourth straight week. He finished tied for 19 th  at the rain-impacted Insperity Invitational after playing 36 holes (70-72) on May 4 and then seeing the final round cancelled. He then finished tied eighth in the senior major Regions Tradition at 10-under 278, seven shots behind winner Doug Barron.

“I had pneumonia during the winter so very slow start to the year,”  said Harrington in his Irish brogue.  “I seem to be coming out of it the last couple of weeks, but I tweaked my neck and had a poor week. It hasn’t fully recovered. Last week it was more in the joint. Now it’s in the same place but more muscle. Obviously going to have physio the next couple of days. But it was very playable today.”

Harrington, who won two Open Championships before joining the Champions Tour, wouldn’t mind being a pain in the neck to the rest of the field this week.

That would be 57-year-old Steve Stricker, the magic man from Madison, Wis., who in late June of 2019 about 50 miles down the road at Notre Dame’s Warren Golf Course won the U.S. Senior Open with a record score of 19-under 261.

Among the spectators under the Golden Dome was golf’s all-time major winner Nicklaus, who in 2010 opened the par-71, 6,852-yard Club of Harbor Shores where Thursday the Senior PGA will be contested for the sixth and likely final time. The course, which first hosted the Senior PGA in 2012, meanders its way through lowlands, dunelands, highlands and meadowlands by the bisecting Paw Paw River on grounds once ruled by the sponsoring Whirlpool Corporation. Back in February, however, Whirlpool and KitchenAid announced plans to part ways with the Senior PGA.

Stricker, who captained the victorious 2021 U.S. Ryder Cup team at Whistling Straits in northern Wisconsin, took this past week off from the PGA Championship at Valhalla in order to be ready to defend the title he won in Frisco, Texas, in a one-hole playoff with Ireland’s Padraig Harrington, his European team counterpart, after both golfers were tied after four trips around the Fields Ranch East course with 18-under 270 totals.

Last Sunday at Greystone Golf & Country Club in Hoover, Ala., Stricker finished tied for third with Stewart Cink and Ernie Els three strokes behind champion Doug Barron’s 17-under-par runaway effort which win the Regions Tradition by two strokes over New Zealand’s Steven Alker, whose name was scratched from the final entry list released Friday by the PGA. It was Alker who won the 2022 Senior PGA championship at Harbor Shores after Stricker pulled out just prior because of COVID-19 precautions.

Stricker actually decided before his final round of three-under 69 at Greystone that he would skip a trip to Valhalla no matter how he finished on the leaderboard.

“I’m tired. I’m old,” Stricker said prior to his announcement. “You know, I know where my place is. I’m going to assess where I’m at.” Then on Sunday, he made it official, claiming fatigue. “I just can’t play four (times) out of five weeks,” added Stricker, who is the playing host for the second Champions Tour event following the Senior PGA, the 54-hole American Family Insurance Classic at University Ridge in Madison.

Stricker, who has seven senior major titles among his 17 PGA Champions Tour titles, was seeking his third straight Regions Tradition crown when the 54-year-old Barron overcame him with a final-round 68.

“I really thought he would do what he does at this tournament every year,” said Barron, who also had to ignore the final-round 63 shot by the 52-year-old Alker.

Alker’s late withdrawal means the Champions Tour’s leading money winner with just under $1.2 million will not be in the 156-player field. Ironically it was a final-round 63 by Alker that the New Zealand native used two years ago on the final day at Harbor Shores to zoom past Canada’s Stephen Ames by three strokes and Germany’s Bernhard Langer by six to win his first and only senior major.

The 66-year-old Langer, whose two Masters hang nicely next to his 46 Champions Tour victories which include 12 senior titles, will be playing for the third time since he had surgery to repair the torn Achilles tendon in his left ankle. He suffered the injury while playing pickleball at the end of January following his T22 finish at Hualalai. The determined Langer returned on May 5 to play 36 holes (69-74) in the rain-delayed Insperity Invitational at The Woodlands, Texas, that had its final round cancelled. Langer finished T31 behind champion Scott Dunlap.

“I still think I have a lot of good golf in me,” noted Langer, who tied for eighth at the Regions Tradition, shooting 69 on the final day though limping noticeably.

The 60-year-old Ames, a native of Trinidad and Tobago and a Canadian citizen from Vancouver, comes in second on the money list with $956,120 in nine events and won earlier this year at the Chubb Classic (Feb. 5) and the Mitsubishi Electric Classic (April 28). Ames is one spot on the money list ahead of the 58-year-old Broadhurst, an Englishman who won here in 2018 with a 19-under 265 that matched the 2016 winning effort of Rocco Mediate. Broadhurst won at the Invited Celebrity Classic, has four other Top 10 finishes and earned $813,446.

Others who could make their way to the leaderboard this week include South Koreans Y.E. Yang (seventh in earnings) and K.J. Choi (ninth)i; South Africa major winners Els (21 st ) and Retief Goosen (10 th ); Stricker’s Madison, Wis., good buddy Jerry Kelly (11 th ); past KitchenAid winner Alex Cejka (13 th ) of Germany via Czechoslovakia; Dublin’s Harrington (15 th ), who won March 24 at the Hoag Classic Newport Beach; Spain’s Miguel Angel Jimenez (17 th ); and Cink (24 th ), a 51-year-old American who finished T3 at the Regions Tradition while playing a mixture of regular and senior tour events.
