Seven Days On Tour: Inside the weekly routine of a PGA Tour pro

pga pro tour schedule

Billy Horschel is a fountain of energy. He talks fast, walks fast and can’t help himself when it comes to Twitter. He’s a human can of Red Bull. These are not necessarily good traits for a golfer, but he’s done OK. Horschel has won five times on the PGA Tour after an impressive college career at the University of Florida, and in 2014 captured the FedEx Cup.

At 32, and in his ninth season on tour, the Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., resident is also a creature of habit and has the rhythm of life as a professional golfer down. What’s a typical week like for a PGA Tour player? Most fans only see the shots Thursday through Sunday, but there’s a lot more going on than meets the eye. So he gave us a peek.

This is when most of us are flying into town, except when you’re coming from another tournament on Sunday night or flying somewhere really far when you might get in a day or two earlier. The extra day of rest and to catch up on personal things is important because this is really the only “off” day I’ll have. The only time I will go to the course on a Monday is at a major, the Players and sometimes a World Golf Championship event. The WGC-Dell Match Play was one of those cases because the tournament started on Wednesday, so I flew into Texas late Monday morning, had lunch at the course and played nine holes with Brandt Snedeker.

My wife, Brittany, and our three children don’t often come on the road with me, maybe a handful of times a year. It’s a lot to ask them to travel as much as I’m on the road (the kids are 5, 2 and 3 months old now, too, so it’s a lot of work). Earlier in my career, I used to fly private most weeks, but since my family doesn’t travel nearly as much as they once did, I only do it 15-20 percent of the time now. At $5,000 an hour, it’s also expensive, and most weeks I don’t need it anyway. Delta is my “private” airline, and I share it with lots of my friends.

One thing I have figured out is that if you look at all the best players in the world, they are relentless with their routine. I’ve always had a routine even going back to my days in college at Florida, but it took about six or seven years out here to find what worked best for me and refine it through some trial and error.

Most weeks I’m up by 6 or 6:30 at the latest—I can’t sleep in anymore even if I try. Before I even get to the course, I’ve already been to the gym for an hour, with my workout focused on getting the muscles loose, core strengthening and flexibility. Fitness is something I’ve really taken seriously the last handful of years, especially as I’ve gotten older. We hit so many balls and have such long days, it’s helped me stay healthy. I’m only 32, but I feel more aches pains every day.

Once I’m at the course, breakfast is pretty simple: orange juice, oatmeal, yogurt and granola, fruit, a banana, and one piece of toast with peanut butter. I used to have eggs but found out that I have a moderate allergy, so I don’t eat them anymore. Then it’s time to practice.

Typically, I’ll text another player the night before to see if they want to play a practice round together. Sometimes I’ll run into a guy in the locker room and ask if they’re playing. Sneds and Webb Simpson are two guys who I play with a lot. Since Sneds and I have the same swing coach (Todd Anderson) and same stats guy (Mark Horton), we’ll play little games against each other on the course—mostly chipping or putting contests for a little extra something. Whatever the data says we need to work on the most. Unfortunately, I’m behind on the ledger because he’s been kicking my butt lately, but having competitions against each other has been really beneficial in sharpening my game and focus. Plus, it’s more fun that way.

The majority of the time we’ve played these courses so much, the rest of the round is just about seeing it in its current conditions. I might also be working on certain things in my swing to fit that course. It’s easy to hit every kind of shot you want on the range, but nothing can replicate having one ball and having to hit a shot on call on the golf course, especially with a little cash on the line.

Afterward, I’ll have lunch, hit balls for another 30-40 minutes then putt for 30-40 minutes and call it a day. Before I leave the course, I’ll see my physio (Alex Bennett) and spend another 30 minutes getting worked on and stretched out. It’s something I’ve done more of, again, as I’ve gotten older.

Wednesdays are pro-am days. The rounds can be long, but they’re important for us and the tour, and it’s the same routine for me before and after the round. Once I’m playing, though, I try to spend the first four or five holes focusing my energy on the amateurs, getting to know them, chit-chat, giving tips.

The next handful of holes I’m focusing on whatever I’m working on with my swing. Right now, it’s trying not to over-turn in my backswing. When I do, I lose consistency in my ball-striking, which is something that has always been a strength of my game. The feeling I’m trying to capture is that my backswing is driven by my arms rather than with my body. It’s weird because it feels like I have no power, but by not over-turning in my backswing I’m still able to generate power, just in a little different way. It’s helping me be more consistent, which is the goal.

At the end of the round, though, the day is far from over. After the pro-am, I’ll again hit balls for 30-40 minutes and chip and putt for another 30 on top of that. Here’s it’s just fine-tuning things so that we’re all set for Thursday.

RELATED: The Horschels' battle off the course

Once I’m back to the hotel, I’ll get some dinner, watch TV and then it’s zzzz. The goal is to go to sleep by 10. A lot of guys will go out every night, but that’s never been me. I’ll go out maybe two or three times during the week, maybe grab dinner with Sneds or Scott Piercy, another good buddy of mine out here, and just order room service or pick up dinner the other nights. That also allows me time to catch up with my family via Facetime, but that’s usually quick. We get to the point in a few minutes, and it’s done. We’re not on our phones like teenagers. But the time I spend not thinking about golf, I’ve figured out as I’ve gotten older, has been better for my mind and has had an impact on my game. Like I said, you can over-do it out here.

The rest of the time I watch a ton of TV, especially sports. I have 15-20 shows that I keep up with on a regular basis and watch on Netflix or iTunes. Everything else is mindless TV so I can check stuff out on the Internet and get in Twitter debates. Social media is entertaining, but it’s also something I’ve done less of the last year and am working on doing less of period. It’s just a time suck, and I need a break from it because it’s not really helping anything when it comes to what I’m out here trying to accomplish. My goal this year is to read a few more books when I’m in the hotel room.

Thursday through Sunday

Once the tournament starts, I’m the same creature of habit. If I’m in the morning wave, I wake up 3 hours and 15 minutes to 3½ hours before my tee time and arrive at the course 2½ hours to 2 hours and 45 minutes before I’m scheduled to go off. I don’t really have a preference on tee times, but if I’m going late-early the first two days, I’m usually only getting four or five hours of sleep between rounds because by the time I get back to my hotel and fall asleep it’s late.

billy-horschel-working-out.jpg

Twitter.com/BillyHo_Golf

The first stop at the course is the fitness trailer to warm up, get the blood flowing, warm up my muscles and get them activated. Yes, activated. They need to be ready to fire to make a proper golf swing. Then it’s off to breakfast in player dining for about 30 minutes.

Next, I start my warm up an hour and 15 minutes to a 1½ hours before my tee time. I do a longer warm up than most players—anywhere between 30-45 minutes longer. I could warm up in 45 minutes like everyone else, but I don’t like to feel rushed. I move quickly enough as it is, so slowing down and taking my time helps me focus.

RELATED: Billy Horschel discusses his path to becoming a clothing designer

If I’m not playing until the afternoon, I try to do a little workout in the morning—nothing too crazy, just enough to get things moving. I get to the course the same amount of time before my round and go through the same routine. If I’m playing late on the weekend, lunch before the round is usually a sandwich or some chicken and vegetables. I’ve always had a routine, and just sort of figure it out on my own over time to what works best.

billy-horschel-high-five-fans-honda-classic.jpg

Ben Jared/Getty Images

Like with the pro-am, my day isn’t over after the round, either. I’d say 98 percent of the time, I do around 30 minutes of practice after my round, no matter how I played. It’s something I have always done because I guess in my head that if I didn’t do something after the round and come out the next day, I’d feel like I should have hit a few balls. I like to have my swing ingrained in my mind. It’s a comfort factor for me and makes me feel like I’m checking off the boxes of what I need to do.

It’s tough for me to say that I over-practiced early in my career because I’ve always been a guy who believes in practicing a lot, but after about seven years I figured out the benefits aren’t always there. I’m in my 10th year out here, so when I don’t play well I don’t stress out as much. Early on, I would practice all day, hitting ball after ball, and spend a ton of time putting. At this point, though, it feels like everything is pretty good. When it’s not, I just chalk it up to a bad day and move on. Still, to this day it’s a balance that I struggle with.

Whenever I do walk off the practice area, though, it’s at least 30-40 minutes before I leave the course because I’m getting worked on by my physio again. There are other obligations on occasion, too. At the Dell Match Play, after my round on Thursday I had a visit to one of their corporate tents as an obligation for one my sponsors. It only lasted about 20 minutes but it’s an important obligation. A few weeks earlier at Bay Hill, I did some filming for Zurich, another sponsor, along with Justin Rose. That was on a Tuesday afternoon and lasted about 90 minutes. And if I’m fortunate and playing well, I’ll spend time speaking to the media as well.

In other words, most weeks, there’s a lot more going on for us than what you see inside the ropes.

Pro blasts new PGA Tour schedule, citing expenses, long travel days

James Hahn didn't mince words about the new PGA Tour schedule.

If a PGA Tour pro wanted to play all five events from the second week of October to the first week in November, that itinerary would require just north of 15,000 miles of travel, according to Google Earth.

Of course, no player is required to enter all of those events, but the potential travel headache of doing so — especially with the way things are going this summer — has two-time PGA Tour winner James Hahn wondering why the schedule is built that way at all.

“Take a look at the new PGA Tour schedule and you’ll understand why players are upset,” Hahn tweeted Monday afternoon, just minutes after the Tour released the 2022-23 lineup . “Vegas to Japan to South Carolina to Bermuda to Mexico? For the viewers, it’s a flick of a remote. For us, it’s 20 hour travel days and tens of thousands of dollars in expenses.”

Hahn, who serves as a player director on the PGA Tour Policy Board, said he’s currently playing his seventh tournament in a row. The start of next week’s Fedex Cup Playoffs, which Hahn looks to make at No. 115 in the standings, will make it eight in a row.

“Won’t see my family for a month,” Hahn replied to another Twitter user. “Will miss taking my daughter to her first day of school. The sacrifices I make to be the 236th best golf (sic) in the world.

“Do you see the hypocrisy. Players are leaving the Tour because they want to spend more time with their families among other things. But when I address our scheduling issue, it’s considered whining and insignificant. Can’t win with you guys.”

Of course, the Tour schedule has come under increased scrutiny with the growth of LIV Golf, with many players citing the taxing travel schedule on the PGA Tour among the reasons they decided to leave for the upstart league.

“I’ve been on the road since 1998. It’s like winning the lottery for me,” said Pat Perez, who added that he missed the birth of his child due to his PGA Tour travels. “I’ll have to explain that to him someday why I wasn’t there.”

In another tweet, Hahn suggested only playing events in major cities, such as those with NFL teams.

Hahn’s rant generated hundreds of replies, including one from Scottie Scheffler’s caddie Ted Scott.

Change your mindset pro. Most people have a tough gig in this life. We ain’t them. It’s a game that provides a living for us. Soak it up man. Be grateful. You’ll thank me for it mr Hahn😊 — ted scott (@jtedscott) August 1, 2022

“Change your mindset pro,” Scott said. “Most people have a tough gig in this life. We ain’t them. It’s a game that provides a living for us. Soak it up man. Be grateful.”

Evidently, Hahn will have plenty of time to reflect on his gratitude on his way to Greensboro for this week’s Wyndham Championship. Hopefully from the comfort of a window seat.

T he second major of the 2024 golf season has arrived with plenty of players looking to set a tone for the remainder of the campaign. No one will have more pressure on their shoulders than Scottie Scheffler, who will look to become the first golfer since 2015 to win the first two major championships of the year. The beautify of May will surround Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville as the PGA Championship returns to down for the first time in a decade. This year's 106th affair is set with a loaded field featuring most of the best golfers in the world.

Scheffler, the 2024 Masters champion, has not only won consecutive PGA Tour starts but four of the last five events in which he has played. Given his ability and how locked in he looks on the course, it's no surprise that he's the clear favorite in the field. But not only that, Scheffler's play has given talk of a grand slam some legitimacy. The PGA would also mark the second leg of his personal slam journey given his major championship mantle consists of two green jackets over the last three years.

Just behind Scheffler on the odds board are Brooks Koepka and Rory McIlroy, both of whom have also won their last two starts. Koepka has been playing exceptionally well overseas, and while he finished T45 at the Masters last month, he's also the reigning PGA champion seeking to go back-to-back for the second time. In other words, he has a chance to lift the Wanamaker for the fourth time in seven years. McIlroy has gone without a major since the last playing of the PGA at Valhalla a decade ago, but he's clearly comfortable on this course and coming off a win in the Wells Fargo Championship where he dominated another familiar venue at Quail Hollow.

While attending the PGA Championship can be a ton of fun, simply being able to watch golf on the game's grandest stages is an incredible treat each year. We here at CBS Sports are thrilled to bring you wall-to-wall coverage of the PGA Championship throughout this week with action streaming live all weekend.

CBS Sports golf anchor Jim Nantz will call the action for the 34th consecutive year while hosting coverage from the super tower alongside lead analyst Trevor Immelman. Also at Valhalla for CBS Sports are Ian Baker-Finch, Frank Nobilo, Dottie Pepper, Colt Knost and Mark Immelman with Amanda Renner reporting and conducting interviews.

The 106th PGA Championship is the 34rd consecutive (and 41th overall) broadcast by CBS Sports, which will offer multi-platform coverage throughout the week. In partnership with the PGA of America, CBS Sports will lead overall production efforts deploying 125 cameras and nearly 150 microphones to capture all the sights and sounds. Additional technological enhancements include Fly Cams, Bunker Cameras, state-of-the-art drone coverage, panoramic Falcon 360 cameras, Toptracer and more.

Enough talking about it. Here's how you can watch as much PGA Championship as possible throughout the week. Be sure to stick with CBS Sports for live coverage throughout and  download the CBS Sports App  to watch the PGA Championship live on your mobile device this weekend.

2024 PGA Championship odds, predictions, golf picks: Tiger Woods projection by model that called the Masters

Tiger woods, an 82-time pga tour winner, is expected to be part of the 2024 pga championship field at valhalla golf club.

tiger.jpg

Tiger Woods will return to the scene of one of his many major victories when the 2024 PGA Championship gets underway at Valhalla Golf Club on Thursday. This marks the fourth time the course in Louisville, Kentucky will host a major event. Woods won the PGA Championship there in 2000 as a 24-year-old. Now a 48-year-old veteran, Woods is a 125-1 long shot in the 2024 PGA Championship odds to repeat that success. Should you back Woods to pull off a miraculous PGA Championship 2024 victory? World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is the 3-1 favorite in the 2024 PGA Championship field, while Rory McIlroy is 6-1 following back-to-back victories at the Zurich Classic and Wells Fargo Championship.

Defending PGA Championship winner Brooks Koepka is 10-1. Before locking in your 2024 PGA Championship picks or Tiger Woods props, be sure to  see the golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up almost $9,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model correctly predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.

The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 11 majors entering the weekend and hit the Masters three straight years. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now with the PGA Championship 2024 field taking shape, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard.

Top 2024 PGA Championship predictions

One major surprise: Collin Morikawa, a 25-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. The 2020 PGA Championship winner is finding his form in 2024 just in time to compete at Valhalla. He has three top-three finishes on the season, including a third-place at the Masters followed by a solo ninth at the RBC Heritage, which sets him up for the tough competition he will face at the PGA Championship 2024.

The 27-year-old's superior driving should help him navigate the tough terrain at Valhalla, as he ranks second across the PGA Tour in driving accuracy (78.77%). Additionally, Morikawa is 17th in putting average (1.720), 15th in putts per round (28.09) and 12th in one-putt percentage (43.97%). His past experience and current form make it easy to see why the model is high on him to finish strong at the 2024 PGA Championship.

The model has also examined where Tiger Woods finishes. The 48-year-old is playing a limited schedule at this stage of his career, primarily playing in the major tournaments. He set a Masters record with his 24th consecutive made cut in April, breaking a tie with Fred Couples and Gary Player.

However, Woods finished last among golfers who made the cut, with his 16-over 304 being the worst 72-hole total of his career. He won the 2000 PGA Championship at Valhalla, but he missed the cut after battling a back injury when the event returned in 2014. The 82-time PGA Tour winner can never be overlooked when he steps on the course, regardless of his current form or health issues.  The model just locked in its Tiger Woods PGA Championship picks here. .

How to make 2024 PGA Championship picks

The model is also targeting four other golfers with odds of 25-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .

Who will win the 2024 PGA Championship, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? Check out the PGA Championship 2024 odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected PGA Championship leaderboard, all from the model that's nailed 11 golf majors, including the last three Masters .

Jimmy Dunne, who last year helped negotiate the PGA Tour's controversial framework agreement with Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, resigned from the tour's policy board on Monday.

In Dunne's resignation letter, a copy of which was obtained by ESPN, Dunne wrote that "no meaningful progress has been made towards a transaction with PIF" and that "my vote and my role is utterly superfluous" now that player directors outnumber independent directors on the policy board. Dunne's resignation was effective immediately.

"It is crucial for the Board to avoid letting yesterday's differences interfere with today's decisions, especially when they influence future opportunities for the tour," Dunne wrote. "Unifying professional golf is paramount to restoring fan interest and repairing wounds left from a fractured game. I have tried my best to move all minds in that direction."

Along with PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan, Dunne and policy board chairman Ed Herlihy secretly negotiated the framework agreement with the PIF, which is financing the rival LIV Golf League. Monahan and PIF governor Yasir Al-Rumayyan announced the deal on June 6. Most PGA Tour players -- including some player directors -- were unaware of the deal until it was announced on TV.

The framework agreement expired Dec. 31, but the sides have continued to try to negotiate a deal. Monahan and player directors, including Tiger Woods , met with Al-Rumayyan in the Bahamas on March 18.

At the Masters in April, Woods said the meeting was productive.

"I don't know if we're closer, but certainly we're headed in the right direction," Woods said. "That was a very positive meeting, and I think both sides came away from the meeting feeling positive."

The PGA Tour did strike a deal with Strategic Sports Group, a consortium of billionaire American sports team owners and others, to invest up to $3 billion into PGA Tour Enterprises, a new for-profit entity.

In a memo, obtained by ESPN Monday night, sent to Tour golfers, Monahan addressed the developments, saying "I'd like to thank Jimmy for his steadfast service to this organization since he joined the Board in January 2023, not to mention his countless contributions to the game of golf that span decades."

Monahan, in the memo, also added "we continue to make meaningful progress behind the scenes in our negotiations toward a potential agreement with the PIF. Our goal remains to deliver the best possible outcome for the PGA Tour, our players, partners, tournaments and fans," before concluding that "out of respect for the PGA Championship, we will not be making any additional public comments on this matter."

Dunne, a Wall Street dealmaker, testified about the tour's potential deal with the Saudis in front of the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations on July 11. Monahan was taking a leave of absence for health reasons at the time of the hearing.

Dunne suggested in his resignation letter on Monday that he had been cut out of the negotiations with the Saudis. His resignation comes less than a week after PGA Tour star Rory McIlroy told reporters that certain people on the policy board were "uncomfortable" with him returning to the board .

McIlroy resigned from the policy board in November. Player director Webb Simpson was prepared to step down -- if McIlroy replaced him to help get a deal done with the Saudis.

Along with Woods and Simpson, the player directors are Patrick Cantlay , Jordan Spieth , Adam Scott and Peter Malnati . Former tour member Joe Ogilvie is a board liaison.

On Thursday, the tour announced that former Valero Energy Corp. CEO Joseph W. Gorder had been elected to serve as the inaugural chairman of PGA Tour Enterprises' board of directors and that McIlroy would be part of a transaction committee that would handle the tour's negotiations with the PIF.

Gorder, now executive chairman of Valero Energy's board, also will serve on the transaction committee, along with Fenway Sports Group founder and principal owner John W. Henry, Monahan, Scott, Woods, McIlroy and Ogilvie.

Dunne and Herlihy were left off the transaction committee.

"Players have lost trust in the board because of the backdoor deals and the governance," one PGA Tour member, not authorized to formally speak on the situation, told ESPN on Monday. "The more players are getting involved, the more they realize things aren't being run like they want -- from the top down. The players have told the rest of the board they want to run it and don't trust the board. When you lose faith in the head guy, none of the players are going to pay attention anymore."

Dunne did not respond to ESPN's request for comment.

Prop Farm: Valhalla trends, angles on how to bet ‘Superman’ Scottie Scheffler

Golfbet News

Change Text Size

Golf's second major championship of the year is upon us. The PGA Championship returns to Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, for the fourth time and for the first time in a decade. Mark Brooks won here in a playoff over Kenny Perry in 1996. Tiger Woods won the PGA at Valhalla in year 2000 and Rory McIlroy captured his last major to date, 10 years ago here at Valhalla.

Both McIlroy and Woods are back in the field this week with McIlroy coming off a blistering final round last week that was good enough to earn him his fourth Wells Fargo Championship title. But maybe the biggest storyline this week involves world No. 1, Scottie Scheffler, who we haven't seen in competition since he won in back-to-back weeks at the Masters and then at the RBC Heritage.

"With the questions coming in, it is tough to back Scheffler at that price (+450),” said golf bettor and director of content at Betsperts, Andy Molitor. "But with the big purse, I'm using him in some one-and-done fantasy entries. I'll give him a bit of a bump in some head-to-head matchup betting this week as well.”

Scottie Scheffler on maintaining focus from event to event

"I'm not counting on his recent fatherhood to negatively impact his game," said professional bettor and handicapper, Paul Stone. At the same time, Stone says, "But it's difficult to play Scheffler in any of the markets because you are paying such a premium. Personally, I'm not going to step in front of the best golfer in the world in a major."

Evidently many golf bettors are confident that there will be no change in Scheffler's game this week. Drew O'Dell, senior data analyst at BetMGM points out, "Scheffler is No. 1 at BetMGM for highest ticket count (18.2%), highest handle (29.4%), and is our biggest liability in the outright winner market." O'Dell went on to note that Scheffler is also responsible for the highest ticket count in the First Round Leader market. He is second here in handle, trailing only McIlroy.

Long time sports betting writer/reporter and now host at VSiN, Matt Youmans provided his thoughts. "Scheffler has been Superman, so it's tough to bet against him, but maybe he'll lose that edge with the baby and the brief layoff."

Scheffler did not make my outright card, either. For me it is an unknown as to how he will come out of the gates immediately off this brief but life-changing hiatus. I believe it is possibly similar to a bye-week in the NFL. When you have a team that has won four or five games in a row (in the case of Scheffler, golf tournaments), and you interrupt that momentum with a week off, often times those teams come out on the other side with a down performance. We will see if that is the case with Scheffler but there is no doubt that this has paused what has been a historically red-hot run.

If you are one who is staying away from Scheffler this week, then who are we betting to win at Valhalla in 2024?

"This is the first time in several years that I have had great respect for McIlroy's all-around game coming in but I'm looking for reasons to bet the favorites," said Youmans, a well-connected long time Las Vegas bettor. "I'm not betting players at single-digit odds anyway.”

Rory McIlroy on playing with confidence and momentum

I have to throw my own hat in this ring as well as I fancy Brooks Koepka's chances this week. Despite the overwhelming love for a three-time PGA Championship winner, he's nearly impossible to ignore. He's also been a machine at TPC Southwind over the years, which is another course that has Zoysiagrass fairways. The combination of Zoysiagrass fairways and bentgrass greens were present at Bellerive where Koepka won his second PGA in 2018 and are exactly the same pairing we have at Valhalla.

Molitor said he is exploring the finishing position markets but does already have a play on another very interesting figure in this week's field. "Xander Schauffele for a top-10 finish is an auto-bet, I suppose," he said.

Once again, I am aligned with Molitor as I have both an outright bet and a top-10 finish play on Schauffele. It is hard to give Schauffele a pass on two lost 54-hole leads, last week at the Wells Fargo Championship and back in March at THE PLAYERS Championship. But let's also note, Schauffele didn't necessarily "lose" those championships - rather, he was beaten. He shot a two-under round of 70 on Sunday at THE PLAYERS, only to be tracked down by Scheffler who fired a 64. Last Sunday, he was better than the majority of the field, shooting an even-par 71, but again, and outlier round got the best of him - in this case, a 65 by McIlroy.

While the world is doubting Schauffele, I believe it is a good spot to be in the minority and take another shot with the No. 3 ranked player in the world at what I believe is a very fair price (+1400).

Stone landed on some long shots to hoist the Wanamaker Trophy this week. "I took Sepp Straka and Shane Lowry at triple-digit prices," said the Texas native. "I also played them for top-20 finishes and I took Straka in a matchup over Alex Noren."

Straka is a player I identified in my early handicapping last week and I too grabbed him to win as well as finish top-20. He comes off of an eighth-place finish last week at Quail Hollow Club, was 16th last month at the Masters, and finished seventh at the PGA Championship last year, while being the runner-up at The Open Championship last summer. He's really starting to show that he can handle golf's biggest stages, including the Ryder Cup, where he earned a point for Team Europe last fall, paired with the aforementioned, Lowry. Straka also has a PGA TOUR win on a Jack Nicklaus design (as is Valhalla), winning at PGA National in 2022.

Youmans wins the clever line of the day in further explaining his handicap this week. "My longer shots are Justin Thomas, Joaquin Niemann, and Tyrrell Hatton. This is a long course already and it will play even longer with the rain - so look for a 'Louisville Slugger.' Well done.

Senior Manager at Mandalay Bay Race and Sportsbook, Tristan Davis, checked in with some of the action he is seeing in other markets at his shop in Las Vegas.

"All sharp money on Viktor Hovland to beat Wyndham Clark in a head-to-head matchup. We went from -130 to -145 on Hovland. Weirdly enough, other sharp action on Clark to beat Cam Smith, moving from -120 to -135," said Davis.

And then of course, there is Tiger Woods. "At +20000, there is some support still for him but nowhere near what we saw back in April," Davis continued. "A notable market as always, 'Will Tiger Make the Cut.' Classic case of the sharps versus the recreational players. Great two-way battle with the 'NO' winning the handle ever so slightly at -185 versus +140 for 'YES.' Sharps are playing the 'NO' option as they tend to do with the Tiger markets.”

I'm in line with what Youmans said about this golf course playing even longer with the rain leading up to this tournament and possibly continuing in spots during the championship. This will also make the four-inch rough even nastier. I played Denny McCarthy over Patrick Reed in a head-to-head matchup along with Will Zalatoris over Dustin Johnson. I'm just not sure Johnson is in form but Reed is not a bomber and will be punished when missing fairways if errant off the tee. Relying on short game to bail you out all week, that was a notion I am willing to bet against.

I'm with Youmans and Molitor again in that the "Prop Farm" at Valhalla will yield a crop that features a Louisville Slugger. Here's to all of our wagers being a home run.
