This fun and fascinating 90-minute tour covers the sites and stories of the pirates connected to Charleston.

Learn about how the city's walls were made to keep out the pirates, but ultimately failed. See the home of Charleston's first Attorney General, Nicholas Trott, and talk about his efforts against pirates.

Parking : Because this tour begins in the French Quarter and ends at the battery, street or metered parking near the intersection of Broad and Church Streets is recommended.

Reservations:  REQUIRED.  Click here to reserve . Groups of 6 or more should review our  group booking policy .

Charleston city regulations allow only 20 participants (including children) per tour guide.  This is a hard cap.   Reservations are required and must be an accurate number of persons, regardless of age.

Where:   We meet in the St. Phillips Church parking lot parking lot next to the Powder Magazine, 79 Cumberland Street ( map )

The tour ends at White Point Garden at the southern tip of the peninsula.

Duration:  Approximately 90 minutes.

Cost:  This tour is free to take, and you get to decide what, if anything, the tour was worth when it's done. A  name-your-own-price tour  is a tour for anyone's budget.

Though our tours work on a pay-what-you-like basis, we must charge $3 upfront cost per ticket to cover an admin fee and the tour tax that the City of Charleston imposes per participant on any tour within the city plus the administrative fees to handle.

Charleston doesn’t make quite as much of its haunted past as its sister city, Savannah, but there are still any number of people who will tell you that the old buildings and graveyards of the historic peninsula are very haunted indeed!

Ghost tours, along with tours exploring the history of the lowcountry’s age of piracy or of crimes and the Charleston underworld, are a popular tourist activity, with dozens of tours catering to this interest.

Several local guide companies specialize in tours exploring Charleston’s haunted history, many of whom are actively involved in researching the city’s folklore and publish books and podcasts on the subject.

Ghost and pirate stories and the history of Charleston’s seedier side are also a popular topic with the city’s many generalist tour companies, so if you want to learn more about one of the other sides of Charleston’s history, it should usually be possible to find a tour to suit your needs.

A Fun Pirate School Cruise for Everyone!

Sneaky Pete has been vanquished, but vows to return. Pirate School is now in session! Our crew will train and learn while having the time of their lives being real pirates and hunting real treasure! Our determined mates cast off into a world of all things pirate!

Your Pirate School cruise is filled with all things fun! At check in we’ll spend time getting the little pirates ready with pirate gear (optional) as well as teaching them how to talk like a real pirate crew. Once the crew is ready, we board the ship and head out on the Ashley River to the Wappoo Creek for a Pirate education that you’ll be sure to remember.

• Our pirate school cruise is a real education in pirate life on the high seas. We teach map reading, navigation, all things nautical with a fun twist that keeps the crew busy. Our ultimate goal is to find our hidden treasure under the sea and share with the crew.
• Before setting sail on the Black Ghost every child will be transformed into an official member of the Black Ghost Crew.
• The activity is non-stop with training, songs to sing, treasure to find and maps to read.
• There is no time for lolligagin! The crew will be transformed into real pirates and be ready for anything on the water in search for treasure. All crew members will graduate and be given a diploma from the Captain and first mate.

** There is no Sneaky Pete on our Pirate School cruises due to the weather being colder in the months offered.

What Is Not Included?

Tips for the crew are not included but greatly appreciated for a job well done!

Important Information

• 1 responsible Adult is required to accompany children on the cruise
• Pirates of Charleston reserves the right to cancel any trip in the event of steady rain, thunderstorms, high winds or any condition that the Captain deems unsafe. Also, minimum capacity must be met to cast off. We will attempt to notify you at least one hour prior to check-in when possible. Cancellations are at the sole discretion of Pirates of Charleston. If we cancel your trip for any reason, we will reschedule or issue a refund.
• Cancellations: You have until 48 hours prior to your pirate cruise to make any changes to your reservation. No cancellations are allowed within 48 hours of your departure time as space is limited and those spaces have been reserved for you. Your credit card will be charged the full amount for unsold seats.

Take your kids on a swashbuckling adventure on the 45-foot wooden Black Ghost Pirate Ship! Once inducted as real pirates, our crew of determined mates cast off into a world of all things pirate.

Fun for the Whole Family!

It's hard finding fun things to do in Charleston with kids, so we developed this hour-long tour for families with young buccaneers. 

All of the children sign our pirate articles to join the crew. Next, we practice sword drills, so the crew is ready for the adventure.  Each child receives a sword and pirate bandana to keep as souvenirs.  Don't worry, Mom & Dad... the swords are inflatable!  

We then set out on our treasure hunt, exploring the pirate history of White Point Gardens and Charleston Harbor.  

Children also get to make their own pirate flags.  The tour ends when we find the treasure chest and divvy up the plunder.  Aye!  The kids get more souvenirs from the treasure chest and their very own parrot (again, don't worry, parents... it's a balloon parrot, so you don't have to feed it or worry about parrot poop!​.

Tour begins at the corner of East Battery & Murray Blvd.

Children under 3 are free, but if you want them to receive swords, treasure, and make flags, please purchase the Child 3-12 ticket. 

Children must be accompanied by a paid adult.

In the event of extreme temperatures, parrots may not be on the tour.
