The building was almost demolished in 1984 before an art lover was able to save it and move it eight miles away to where it still stands today!

The grounds here were purchased by Archer Milton Huntington, an industrialist, and his wife Anna Hyatt in 1929.

The original intended use was as a recovery home for Anna as she fought tuberculosis.

Later, the couple would open up the grounds, turning it into a public wildlife sanctuary and sculpture gardens.

It is the oldest and the biggest sculpture garden in America, which makes it a good addition to a Myrtle Beach travel list.

The Brookgreen Gardens are made up of miles of paths in extensive botanical gardens, which serve as a natural sculpture gallery.

Sculptures total over 550, with famous works from the likes of Daniel Chester French scattered throughout the garden in thoughtful, well-placed locations.

22. Myrtle Beach Colored School Museum

The Myrtle Beach Colored School Museum began its life as its name suggests – a school in the segregation area meant for the attendance of black students.

It was in operation from 1923 to 1958.

During this time, most young black Americans were unable to go to school, forcing them to instead learn in local churches.

The Colored School and many other institutions like it were created to provide educational spaces for black Americans.

They were fitted with only the absolute bare minimum of features, with just enough space for their students and barely suitable amenities for them.

This school in particular had only four rooms despite serving students from grade one to eight.

Segregation was abolished in the 1950s, and as time went on, this school was closed and converted into a warehouse.

When it started to fall apart, it was slated for demolition, but some former students formed a committee to save it and preserve it as a reminder of the painful, hateful past of the nation.

Though its name is the subject of some controversy today, the Colored School Museum refuses to change it, proudly displaying the reality of history and refusing to sugarcoat its past.

It offers a glimpse into life for black students in America back in the day, with a restored version of one of its first classrooms and many photos and newspaper excerpts that tell its story.

Now, the Myrtle Beach Colored School Museum isn’t just important as one of South Carolina’s educational places to visit.

It’s also valuable to the community as an adult education center.

Horseback riding is allowed on designated sections of the Grand Strand from the third Saturday in November through the end of February. This means you can gallop – or perhaps gently walk – along the surf in winter. Most guided trips run 90 minutes and cost about $75;  Grand Strand Horseback Riding leads outings from Myrtle Beach State Park . In warmer months, when the beaches are off-limits to horses, many companies guide riders across inland farms, where you might see cows and canals instead of sand and surf.

Stroll the Boardwalk 

Anchored by the SkyWheel, the 1.2-mile Boardwalk is crammed with arcade games, ice cream parlors, souvenir shops, volleyball courts, beachwear stores and busy hotels. The all-American scene is not to be missed in summer, especially if you’re traveling with kids. Officially dubbed the Oceanfront Boardwalk & Promenade, the walkway stretches from the 2nd Ave pier area to 14th Ave North. The family-owned Gay Dolphin gift shop, open continuously for 75 years, hawks shells, t-shirts and souvenirs. RipTydz Oceanfront Grille & Rooftop Bar serves up cocktails with ocean views. 

Bird-watch at Huntington Beach State Park

Scan the skies and salt marshes for great egrets, blue herrings and even bald eagles at Huntington Beach State Park , a favorite stopover for migrating birds and one of the top birding spots in the Southeast. Birdwatchers have spotted more than 350 species of birds at this 2500-acre park, which is home to maritime forests, freshwater and brackish marshes, shrub thickets, beaches and dunes. Pick up a bird checklist then stroll the marsh-flanked Causeway for the best viewing. The new Nature Center also has a birding area. 

Seek out high-octane adventures for families

Smell the popcorn, hear the screams and feel the ocean breeze on the Swamp Fox, a classic wooden roller coaster that careens around Family Kingdom , an oceanfront amusement park packed tight with 35 rides. Funplex Myrtle Beach , which opened in 2021 at the northern end of the Boardwalk, has seven rides including the Sky Velocity, which drops riders six stories. At the beach, several family members can float above the ocean at once on parasailing trips – reaching heights of up to 500ft. Below, jet skis bounce across the waves with banana boats in tow as families cling tight.

Wander through WonderWorks 

This eye-catching, upside-down building is the hub of this three-in-one attraction , an immersive adventure destination that is one part children’s museum, one part amusement park and one part science lab. Various interactive “wonder zones” bring scientific concepts to life, while the outdoor Soar + Explore area boosts the adrenaline factor with a zip line and three-level ropes course. WonderWorks is not unique to Myrtle Beach, but its mix of interactive physical and cerebral activities provides a fun alternative to a day of lying out in the sun.

Putt-putt with pirates and dinosaurs

Rome has ruins. London has pubs. And Myrtle Beach has mini-golf courses, with at last count more than 50 of them puttin’ their stuff (sorry). Some sources even say that the Grand Strand has more courses per square mile than any place in the country. What makes these 18-hole courses memorable? Their exuberant embrace of wacky themes. Pirate ships, dinosaur kingdoms, jungle wonderlands and Hawaiian backdrops have entertained families since the first course was built here in 1930. No ifs, ands, or...putts about it.

Immerse yourself in Gullah culture

Even after the brutal Middle Passage, enslaved workers on coastal South Carolina plantations retained many traditions from their West African homelands. Delve into this rich history, memorable customs and beautiful crafts in the coastal village of Georgetown, home to the Gullah Museum and the Rice Museum.

Zenobia Harper offers tours exploring Gullah culture several days per week at Hopsewee Plantation, a former rice-growing estate on the North Santee River. Workshops here teach sweetgrass basket weaving, a Gullah tradition since the 1700s. Brookgreen Gardens, built on the site of four former rice plantations, offers a weekly Gullah program (Jan–Nov). The Lowcountry Trail here spotlights the lives of those who owned and worked the fields. 

Hit up Broadway on the Beach

With its unabashed embrace of shiny corporate excess, Broadway at the Beach may not offer an afternoon of Lowcountry authenticity. But this sprawling shopping, dining and entertainment complex – which surrounds a 23-acre lake – knows how to bring the rah-rah. Highlights include a lake-crossing zip line, the Pavilion Nostalgia Park carousel, the Pro Football Hall of Fame, dueling pianos at Crocodile Rocks and Ripley’s Aquarium, where penguins and the jellyfish beckon. 

Sip craft beer

The outdoor beer garden at Crooked Hammock Brewery in North Myrtle Beach embraces backyard fun with hammocks, firepits, bocce ball, cornhole and a playground. Grand Strand Brewing Co, which opened in 2021, fills a two-story building in the heart of downtown Myrtle Beach. Enjoy live music and outdoor seating (including Adirondack chairs and picnic tables) as you sip an Airbrush Hazy IPA. Serious beer samplers will want to make the one-mile drive inland for the Dirty Myrtle DIPA at hyperlocal brewery New South Brewery, around since 1998.

Brookgreen gardens.

The Brookgreen Gardens sculpture garden is a seamless blend of art and nature over 9,000 acres. It’s the oldest and largest of its kind in the country. Visitors can access miles of paths that meander through ornate botanical displays and intricate sculpture gardens. This is an awesome idea when the weather is ideal in the shoulder season months, fall and spring.

The gardens are also home to a historical preservation site, The Oaks Plantation. Access to the site is via a large pontoon boat, where an old rice mill, Civil War fort, family cemetery, and plantation house lie. Additionally, the expansive property has a wildlife sanctuary as the grounds are home to a swamp, an aviary, and a butterfly house.

It is the perfect tranquil oasis to wander away for a day. A great departure from some of the more hectic areas of Myrtle Beach and one of our favorite spots along the South Carolina coast.

The Skywheel is an 187-foot-tall observation wheel providing awesome beach views. It’s tough to miss the imposing wheel in Pavilion Park, as it is the sixth tallest in the country. The unparalleled panoramas along the beach are the best in Myrtle Beach.

A serene slow ascent offers plenty of opportunity to relax and appreciate the scenery and stunning photo ops. Each gondola can hold up to six people and will complete three rotations in total. Most visitors love the sweeping views of the landscape.

Relax on the Beach

One of the best things to do in Myrtle Beach is to relax on the beach! This beach is the most popular in South Carolina and one of the most famous beaches in the United States. The expansive sandy beach has many accommodation options, from vacation rentals to resorts or budget hotels.

It can get very crowded, especially in the summer, but due to the size of the beach, there is always room for another towel or chair. Broadway at the Beach

Broadway at the Beach is a popular hotspot, home to many activities. The outdoor complex boasts shopping, dining, and plenty of entertainment. Take Old Time Portraits, a wax museum tour, or a helicopter ride up in the sky.

Extensive eateries are around, whether you’re craving fresh seafood or a juicy burger. The paddle boats are a picturesque way to see the sights of Broadway. You can also wander among the bridges that stretch over the Intracoastal Waterway. No trip to Myrtle Beach is complete without a stop at the extensive outdoor venue.

Warbird Park

Warbird Park is set in a former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, and it has since become an educational space for historical aircraft. History buffs and aviation aficionados are in for a treat. Each plane on display was once a part of active operations, and information is given about their specific significance. 

The wall of service is an on-site memorial to all who served at the base. Some of the more impressive occupants include an F-100 jet fighter and an A-10 Warthog Thunderbolt. There isn’t a whole to the memorial park, and it probably takes less than an hour to visit, but it’s worth a stop for aircraft aficionados. The park is on the south side of Myrtle Beach, just off Business 17.

Myrtle Beach is a haven for the pastime of putt-putt. There are a truly impressive amount of miniature golf courses, each with its theme. There are plenty of fun nautical options with some pretty cool features. Mt. Atlanticus Minotaur Golf is a popular choice known for its seriously impressive build around an artificial mountain.

The tiki-themed course rises 75 feet in the air and increases with difficulty as you progress through the course. See if you can manage a hole-in-one! More options include Captain Hook’s Adventure Golf for a treasure trove of swashbuckling surprises or Jurassic Mini Golf for a roaring round.

Myrtle Beach Golf

Myrtle Beach is far more well-known for its exceptional golf courses than for miniature golf. The area has long been known for exceptional courses and the dizzying amount to choose from for play. However, it was only until 2024 that it finally gained a stop on the PGA World Tour with the Myrtle Beach Classic .

With the excellent amenities, relaxed landscape, and mild winters, it’s not much of a surprise that golf is so popular in Myrtle Beach. There is a wide range of courses to suit every skill level. Huntington Beach State Park

A peaceful respite from the clamoring crowds of vacationers, Huntington Beach State Park provides a private three-mile stretch of sandy shore, ideal for relaxing. There are trails to traverse for biking and hiking, picnic grounds, campsites, and a nature center. 

The jetty is ideal for fishing and birdwatching, so bring your gear. Keep your eyes out for endangered flora and fauna. There is also the Moorish-style Atalaya Castle here. Take a historical peek into the lavish lives of the 20th-century railroad tycoon family who once occupied it.

Family Kingdom Amusement Park

The Family Kingdom Amusement Park is a 13-acre park with 38 rides and the perfect oceanfront location. Take in the views from the Ferris wheel, a nostalgic icon of Myrtle Beach. Fat Harold’s Beach Club

Fat Harold’s Beach Club is a Myrtle Beach institution. Locals and tourists flock to this beachside bar to enjoy live music, dance the night away, and generally soak up the authentic atmosphere.

It’s also a beacon of retro charm, famous for being the best place to learn the South Carolina Shag, an official beach dance developed in the 1940s. It’s open seven days a week, and something is always happening here.

Whether you’re looking to relax with a cold beer or get your groove on to beach music, Fat Harold’s is the place to be. The club opened its doors in 1950 and has been a staple of the Myrtle Beach community ever since.

In addition to promising a good time with a full bar, they also have pool tables and a shuffleboard.

A classic staple of Myrtle Beach is Ripley’s. Ripley’s Believe it or Not is an Odditorium full of all that is weird and wonderful. Check out the displays that are chock full of quirks, such as shrunken heads, surprising sculptures, exotic animal skeletons, and a mirror maze. 

You will also find Ripley’s 5D Moving Theater, a fun twist on the typical cinematic experience. It’s all pretty kitschy, so it may not be everyone’s thing. However, what does stand out is Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Aquarium. It’s at a separate location at Broadway At The Beach.

Ripley’s Aquarium is just as beautiful as it is educational. Get a unique peak at exotic aquatic environments from the inside. Thousands of marine species swim through the expansive environments, ranging from sting rays to sharks to sea turtles. It’s the perfect rainy day thing to do in Myrtle Beach. We aren’t alone in the opinion as the Aquarium is far more popular than the Odditorium.

Myrtle Waves Water Park

Broadway Grand Prix

The family-friendly park operates on a ticket basis, with tickets bought in bulk and then exchanged at each ride. For a traditional seaside experience, it is one of the best things to do in the city.

Surfside Beach is a small beach town south of Myrtle Beach’s city center. Its beach, also named Surfside Beach, is one of the best sandy beaches that the area offers. It has the nickname ‘the family beach’ and is known for its quieter and friendlier atmosphere than Myrtle Beach.

If you are looking for family-friendly beach days, this beach is a great choice. And, if you want to escape the crowds, Surfside is said to be slightly less touristy and cleaner. If you are an arcade game lover, don’t hesitate to head to the Myrtle Beach Pinball Museum. The museum is an arcade lover’s dream. Full of retro machines, the museum allows visitors all-you-can-play access to some of the most exciting and famous games.

The Myrtle Beach Pinball Museum has over 25 games, and the entrance fee is relatively modest. You don’t need tokens or coins to play at each machine, so you’ll only pay at the door. A visit is a fun way to liven up your day, especially on a wet day or quiet morning.

19. Mt. Atlanticus Minotaur Golf

Myrtle Beach is not short of beautiful golf courses. You don’t have to be pro to enjoy a quick golfing session, though – especially when you have Mt. Atlanticus Minotaur Goff. Why don’t you swap a real golf course for one of South Carolina’s top mini golf courses?

Mt. Atlanticus Minotaur Goff is one of the city’s best miniature golf courses and one of the most fun things to do in Myrtle Beach. If this sounds like a whirlwind experience, it really is. There is everything – from cutlass fights to mermaids. If you needed more persuading, the company is owned by Dolly Parton. Yes, Dolly Parton, the queen of country music! The performance isn’t just limited to singing, though, and includes acrobatics, dancing, and a story unraveling around you.

22. WonderWorks Myrtle Beach

For our final amusement park in this guide, we thought we’d better go out with a bang. WonderWorks Myrtle Beach is an attraction that stands out. The park has a mixture of over a hundred science exhibits, including an Extreme Weather Zone, Physical Challenge Zone, and a 6D motion ride. You could be experiencing the winds of a hurricane or laying on a bed of nails – be prepared to be pushed to your limit. WonderWorks tackles science in an educational, fast-paced way – making it the perfect place to spend half a day.

You’ll soon spot WonderWorks. The building is an upside-down house, and you’ll understand how quirky the attraction is from the get-go.

23. Duplin Winery

This attraction is for adults. Duplin Winery is the ‘oldest and largest winery in the south’ and a great place to experience wine tasting in South Carolina. The winery is just a 20-minute drive from Myrtle Beach city center (although we recommend booking a taxi). If you love fine wine and dining, visiting is one of the best things to do in Myrtle Beach.

Book a tasting session and spend a glorious afternoon sipping on sweet wines. The cheeseboards and tasting snacks are carefully matched and worth treating yourself to as well. Wine tasting at Duplin Winery is one of the most fun, indulgent things to do in Myrtle Beach.

24. Myrtle Beach SkyWheel

Myrtle Beach SkyWheel is a much-loved part of the city’s skyline. The wheel is 200 feet above sea level, providing stunning views over Myrtle Beach and its surrounding areas. Visitors sit in air-conditioned pods for the duration of the ride, admiring the scenery and novelty of the experience.

Even better? The SkyWheel is just a short walk from many other attractions since it is located on the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk. The wheel stays running until late at night, so it is a romantic after-dark activity, well-timed after a sunset walk along the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk. At night, the SkyWheel also lights up – a beautiful sight.

So, we’ve covered boat tours, surf fishing, and even pier fishing. But we’ve missed one of the most special Myrtle Beach tours. If you love your fishing (or just want to give it a go), we highly recommend taking a deep-sea fishing tour.

I’ll never forget going with my parents on a fishing tour in Myrtle Beach. I hated catching the fish and when one landed on my hook I tried to ignore it. My dad was not happy with me. He ended up reeling it in, and we ate it for dinner.

These tours take you out into the Atlantic Ocean, providing equipment and expertise to help you get your catches. The experience is once in a lifetime for many. Even amongst the seasoned fishermen, it is sure to be a memorable day. Who knows, maybe you’ll catch something massive.

26. Ripley’s Aquarium

While we are always on the fence about Aquariums, Ripley’s Aquarium is one of the top things to do in Myrtle Beach for families. They say their mission is to “provide a top quality, world class aquatic life facility that will foster environmental education, conservation, and research, while simultaneously providing entertainment for visitors of all ages.”

The aquarium houses over 10,000 sea creatures across multiple floors. You can walk through a glass tunnel, themed rooms like Rio Amazon Rainforest.

I do believe that our oceans are dying and that conservation needs to take place in wildlife preserves, but I am not a fan of places that offer petting areas like Ray Bay at Ripley’s. Some people argue that aquariums have hands-on demonstrations to educate children and let them appreciate the wildlife, but we have no idea what kind of stress that puts on the animal. However, Ripleys Aquariums are fully accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. In today’s world as habitat is dwindling, you can choose either way if you think aquariums are for you or not.

27. Franklin G. Burroughs – Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum

Franklin G. Burroughs – Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum is a beautiful space. Its name might be a mouthful, but its display of predominately southern art is incredibly thought-provoking. You can admire many pieces, from decorative surfboards to suspended dolphin sculptures. The museum hosts a mixture of permanent exhibitions and temporary exhibits.

There is even a library and classroom space for you to explore. While if you are feeling creative, you can drop by the pottery studio. Franklin G. Burroughs – Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum is forward-moving and constantly adapting. If you want an interesting art-related attraction in Myrtle Beach, it is the gallery for you.

28. New South Brewing

Not a fan of wine? Another of the best things to do in Myrtle Beach is coming your way – New South Brewing microbrewery. The microbrewery has been creating delicious ales and lagers since 1998. It is one of the best breweries to visit in South Carolina.

29. Visit River Island

Picturing a private island? You are in luck. River Island Adventures is a remote outpost on the Waccamaw River. It grants visitors access to a 48-acre private island in the middle of the river. You can camp, explore, kayak, and tube around the island – it is honestly an adventurer’s heaven. And when you want some downtime, there are tree swings, fire pits, and hammocks where you can rest and rejuvenate.

River Island Adventures is just a 30-minute drive from the center of Myrtle Beach. It is worth allocating two days to camp there overnight, as the overnight element adds so much more to your experience.

A great way to get on the water is SUP. You can book this guided Stand Up Paddle Board Tour to spot wildlife in either Murrells inlet or the Waccamaw River. There are sunrise and sunset tour and multiple departures throughout the day.

30. Warbird Park

Warbird Park is a stunning green space dedicated to the US Airforce. It is situated in the Market Common, a popular area in Myrtle Beach. You can walk between memorials to serving members of the air force and pass retired fight jets – which are now grounded for all to see at various spots in the park.

If you have close connections or are interested in the air force and planes, it is well worth visiting Warbird Park. The park is free to enter, so the experience suits travelers on all budgets. Keep an eye out for the 9/11 memorial as city officials relocated the monument to Warbird Park.

31. Backstage Mirror Maze

Visiting Backstage Mirror Maze is one of the funniest, most lighthearted things to do in Myrtle Beach. Mirror Maze is exactly what it sounds like; a massive maze of mirrors. Driving offers lots of freedom and is the best way to get to Myrtle Beach if you want an exciting way to reach the city.

Getting around Myrtle Beach

Getting around the Myrtle Beach area isn’t exactly easy in the sense that everything is within walking distance. The city sprawls lengthways and runs into neighboring cities like North Myrtle Beach. However, the city is well-connected by a network of highways, The Coast RTA bus system, and many taxis and Ubers. If you rent or bring a car, you’ll have no issues getting around the Myrtle Beach area. And if not, you can use a mixture of walking and public transport to get around.

While the city itself is not walkable, the promenade region is – which is worth knowing if you plan to spend a holiday mainly on the beach. If you only want to experience the most popular parts of Myrtle Beach’s entertainment scene, choose accommodation near the promenade, and you’ll be able to walk to most places.

The best time to visit Myrtle Beach

The best time to visit Myrtle Beach is in May and June – the start of the summer season. As a general rule of thumb, clued-up tourists avoid peak seasons. And hopefully, by visiting Myrtle Beach at the beginning of the summer season, you should find the city a little quieter than in August. If you want a beach holiday experience where you can sunbathe and swim in the sea, you’ll want to visit Myrtle Beach just before or at the start of summer.

The charms of this coastal city can't be overstated, and travelers from across the country have taken notice. Civil War history buffs can tour Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, savvy Instagrammers can take advantage of photo ops along The Battery and Rainbow Row, and sun seekers can flock to Folly Beach and other nearby stretches of sand. Plus, everyone will enjoy sampling Charleston's world-class Southern cuisine, including staples like shrimp and grits, roasted oysters and she-crab soup.

Located about 100 miles southwest of Charleston, Hilton Head Island caters to travelers seeking a slow-paced vacation. Much less developed than other beach options like Myrtle Beach and North Carolina's Outer Banks, Hilton Head Island boasts 12-plus miles of pristine shoreline. Coligny Beach Park offers a wealth of facilities, such as adjacent shops and restaurants, but those looking for less-crowded sands should seek out the beach access point at Alder Lane. What's more, Hilton Head has earned the nickname "Golf Island" for its dozens of championship courses.

With 10 miles of undisturbed beaches, renowned golf courses and top-notch resorts , Kiawah Island has all the essentials for a serene (albeit costly) beach vacation. Kiawah Island (located about 30 miles southwest of Charleston) features smooth beaches that are great for biking, lounging and spotting bottlenose dolphins and sea turtles. Meanwhile, novice golfers can attend clinics at a learning center, while pros can take on the challenging Ocean Course (notorious for its wind). Come mealtime, visitors can find everything from ice cream parlors to upscale dining at the island's resorts or the picture-perfect Freshfields Village.

Beaufort's quaint oak tree-lined streets and Civil War-era homes provide a glimpse into the small town's antebellum days. Sign up for a walking or horse-drawn carriage tour to take in your surroundings, then visit the Beaufort History Museum to learn more about the town's past. You'll also want to check out Penn Center on the nearby St. Helena Island to educate yourself about Gullah culture. Once you've gotten your fill of history, head to the Beaufort River to kayak or paddleboard, or make your way to the Port Royal Cypress Wetlands and Rookery for a couple of hours of bird-watching.

Although Greenville doesn’t receive throngs of visitors like other South Carolina destinations, it's one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, meaning it may not remain a hidden gem for much longer. Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Greenville has earned a reputation as a hub for outdoor activities. Head to Falls Park on the Reedy to walk across its impressive Liberty Bridge or bike the 28-mile Prisma Health Swamp Rabbit Trail. In town, catch a show at the Peace Center, stroll down Main Street or mingle with friendly locals at a brewery.

This small town between Charleston and Myrtle Beach packs in a lot of history. Get the lay of the land with a tram tour in the historic district, where you'll find attractions that tell disparate stories of life before the Civil War, from Georgian mansions like the Kaminski House Museum to The Rice Museum, which details Georgetown's impactful rice plantation economy. A boat tour can also take you past plantations like Hopsewee Plantation and Hobcaw Barony, which call attention to Native American and Gullah culture and the slave experience. Back in town, the Harborwalk is worth a stroll for its restaurants, shops and art galleries. 

Myrtle Beach, one of the most iconic East Coast beach destinations , is especially popular with families thanks to its wealth of kid-friendly attractions (think: miniature golf courses and Ripley's Aquarium of Myrtle Beach). But visitors of all ages will enjoy spending time by the water. Myrtle Beach's 60-mile stretch of coastline is ideal for relaxing, and the gentle water makes it an excellent place to swim, fish, paddleboard and kayak. To get a dose of nature without rubbing elbows with hordes of tourists, travelers can head to Myrtle Beach State Park, which offers equestrian trails, playgrounds, a campground and a fishing pier.

Situated less than 17 miles southwest of Myrtle Beach, Huntington Beach State Park offers an escape from the busyness of South Carolina's better-known beaches. You can swim, fish and go boating at its 3-mile-long undeveloped beach. Additionally, more than 300 bird species call this park home; walk along Huntington Beach's two nature trails to access some of its best places for bird-watching (you may also spot some alligators). Don't forget to save time for a guided tour of Moorish-style Atalaya Castle and a visit to Brookgreen Gardens to marvel at its flowers and sculptures.

Central South Carolina's Congaree National Park is home to North America's largest stretch of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest, making it an excellent place to go hiking. Congaree boasts more than 27 miles of trails and boardwalks suitable for all skill levels, including the shorter Boardwalk Loop Trail and longer paths like the Weston Lake Trail and the Oakridge Trail that are havens for birds, wild turkeys and deer. When you're not exploring its beautiful forest, spend a few hours fishing in Congaree National Park's lakes or canoeing or kayaking down Cedar Creek.

Caesars Head State Park stuns visitors with an easily accessible overlook that grants sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Escarpment's 2,000-foot drop. This outcropping is just the starting point for exploring the park, which sits roughly 30 miles northwest of Greenville on the North Carolina-South Carolina border. Sixty-plus miles of trails lead to sights like the Devil's Kitchen, where hikers can clamber between narrow walls of a mountain that's been split in two, and Raven Cliff Falls, which rewards those who complete the 2-mile trail with a 420-foot cascade. Fishing and bird-watching (particularly during the fall hawk migration) are also popular things to do.

If you're looking for " the full Grand Strand vacation experience ," the best month to go to Myrtle Beach is June. This month has the best beach weather and all the top attractions are open, according to its website. June, however, does come with cons: large crowds and high hotel rates.

July and August are also popular months to visit Myrtle Beach due to the summer season being in full swing. But July has some of the highest hotel rates of the year and the weather can get very humid and hot. August boasts nice beach weather and the summer crowds begin to die down, but heat, humidity and high hotel costs are still a factor you might want to think about before booking your vacation.

In October the weather is still nice with an average temperature of 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Hotel costs are much cheaper in comparison to the summer months. And while some summer attractions may be closed, there are many other activities and fall festivals for visitors.

Americans Are Moving to These 2 Southern Cities — and Both Have Stunning Beaches, Great Weather, and Low Cost of Living

According to a new report, a third of the top 20 communities people are moving to are in neighboring states.

Inflation and rising home prices are driving Americans out of the country's largest urban areas. A recent study found that in over half of the nation's largest cities, wages have not kept up with soaring real estate values, and, as a result, mortgages have become unaffordable for many residents. 

So, it should come as no surprise that Americans are moving out of cities in search of affordable housing, lower crime rates, proximity to nature, and a lower cost of living in areas like Southern Appalachia. 

A new survey by moving and storage company PODS found that many of the country's top 20 most popular destinations for relocation are focused in two states, South and North Carolina, with Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and Wilmington, North Carolina, tied for the first place.

"Four-season weather, southern charm, history, and dynamic arts, culture, food, and wine scenes are big draws, too. Residents can also look forward to a growing economy (particularly in North Carolina) and lower tax rates than many other U.S. states," the company noted. 

Myrtle Beach has long been a favorite summer destination for vacationers, but thanks to its affordable housing prices , more and more Americans are calling it their permanent home. Similarly, Wilmington has transformed from a getaway spot to one of the most popular places to live in North Carolina , with an eclectic blend of history, recreation, and sound economic opportunities .

In both South Carolina and North Carolina, the cost of living is lower than the national average without compromising quality of life. Other popular cities in these two states are Greenville, South Carolina; Charlotte; and Raleigh; all of which ranked in the top 10 on PODS' list.

The report also highlighted Tennessee and Georgia as emerging destinations with new residents, with many moving from states like California, Florida, and Texas drawn to the mild climate, affordable living, and rich culture.

And speaking of the Sunshine State, South Florida's Miami metro area has the third highest number of move-outs, according to PODS' data, preceded by Los Angeles and San Francisco, which people are leaving due to rising crime and homelessness rates, cost of living, and higher rental rates. 

Florida, in particular, is also becoming less attractive because of the high costs associated with homeownership, including rising insurance and repair costs from natural disasters related to climate change. A recent report found that Florida homeowners paid an average insurance premium of $10,996 in 2023, over $8,000 more than the national average.

Though this island is small, it offers plenty to do, and day trips to Charleston are just a short drive away.
