WATCH: Queen Elizabeth II’s full state funeral

LONDON (AP) — Britain and the world said a final goodbye to Queen Elizabeth II at a state funeral Monday that drew presidents and kings, princes and prime ministers — and crowds who massed along the streets of London to honor a monarch whose 70-year reign defined an age.

In a country known for pomp and pageantry, the first state funeral since Winston Churchill’s was filled with spectacle: Ahead of the service, a bell tolled 96 times — once a minute for each year of Elizabeth’s life. Then, 142 Royal Navy sailors used ropes to draw the gun carriage carrying her flag-draped coffin to Westminster Abbey before pallbearers bore it inside the church, where around 2,000 people ranging from world leaders to health care workers gathered to mourn her.

The trappings of state and monarchy abounded: The coffin was draped with the Royal Standard and atop it sat the Imperial State Crown, sparkling with almost 3,000 diamonds, and the sovereign’s orb and scepter.

But the personal was also present: The coffin was followed into the church by generations of Elizabeth’s descendants, including King Charles III, heir to the throne Prince William and 9-year-old George, who is second in line. On a wreath atop the coffin, a handwritten note read, “In loving and devoted memory,” and was signed Charles R — for Rex, or king.

“Here, where Queen Elizabeth was married and crowned, we gather from across the nation, from the Commonwealth, and from the nations of the world, to mourn our loss, to remember her long life of selfless service, and in sure confidence to commit her to the mercy of God our maker and redeemer,” the dean of the medieval abbey, David Hoyle, told the mourners, as the funeral opened.

The service drew to a close with two minutes of silence observed across the United Kingdom, after which the attendees sang the national anthem, now titled “God Save the King.”

The day began early when the doors of Parliament’s 900-year-old Westminster Hall were closed to mourners after hundreds of thousands had filed in front of her coffin. Many had waited for hours in line, including through cold nights, to attend the lying in state in an outpouring of collective grief and respect.

“I felt like I had to come and pay my final respects to our majestic queen. She has done so much for us and just a little thank you really from the people,” said Tracy Dobson, who was among the last to join the line.

Monday was declared a public holiday in honor of Elizabeth, who died Sept. 8 — and hundreds of thousands of people descended on central London to partake in the historic moment. They jammed the sidewalks to watch the coffin wend its way through the streets of the capital after the service. As the procession passed Buckingham Palace, the queen’s official residence in the city, staff stood outside, some bowing and curtseying.

Millions more tuned into the funeral live on television, and crowds flocked to parks and public spaces across the U.K. to watch it on screens. Even the Google doodle turned a respectful black for the day. Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby said in his sermon that “few leaders receive the outpouring of love we have seen” for Elizabeth.

After the passage through central London, the coffin was placed in a hearse and headed for Windsor Castle — where Elizabeth spent much of her time. Mourners threw flowers at the convoy as it passed.

There will be another procession in Windsor before a committal service in St. George’s Chapel. The queen will be laid to rest with her late husband, Prince Philip, at a private family service.

On the evening before the funeral, Charles issued a message of thanks to people in the U.K. and around the world, saying he and his wife Camilla, the queen consort, have been “moved beyond measure” by the large numbers of people who have turned out to pay their respects to the queen.

People across Britain paused for a minute of silence at 8 p.m. Sunday in memory of the only monarch most have ever known. At Westminster Hall, the constant stream of mourners paused for 60 seconds as people observed the minute of reflection in deep silence.

In Windsor, rain began to fall as the crowd fell silent for the moment of reflection. Some camped overnight outside the castle in order to reserve the best spots to view the queen’s coffin.

Jilly Fitzgerald, who was in Windsor, said there was a sense of community among the mourners as they prepared to wait hours to see procession carrying the queen’s coffin.

“It’s good to be with all the people who are all feeling the same. It’s like a big family because everyone feels that … the queen was part of their family,” she said.

The Queen's coffin left Westminster Hall on Monday morning, where the final members of the public had queued overnight to see the monarch lying in state, and was carried on a gun carriage to the abbey in a procession including the monarch's children.

In a personal touch, the wreath adorning the Queen's coffin had a handwritten note written by the King, which read: "In loving and devoted memory. Charles R."

The wreath also included flowers requested by the King which were cut from the gardens of Buckingham Palace, Clarence House and Highgrove House.

'We will meet again'

Delivering the sermon, the Archbishop of Canterbury told mourners the "grief" felt around the world over the Queen's death "arises from her abundant life and loving service".

"She was joyful, present to so many, touching a multitude of lives," the Most Rev Justin Welby said.

"People of loving service are rare in any walk of life. Leaders of loving service are still rarer."

"Her late Majesty's broadcast during the COVID lockdown ended with 'We will meet again', words of hope from a song of Vera Lynn."

He added: "All who follow the Queen's example, and inspiration of trust and faith in God, can with her say: 'We will meet again'."

When and where is Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral, and how can you pay your respects?

GettyImages-1229083064

On Sept. 8, Queen Elizabeth II died at the age of 96, sparking a national outpouring of grief as the United Kingdom lost its longest-reigning monarch.

Hours later, the government announced a 10-day period of national mourning, culminating in what may be the largest funeral the world has ever seen.

If you want to pay tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, attend the funeral or watch it from afar, here's everything you need to know. This includes information about booking flights from the U.S. to London with points and miles as well as award availability at popular points hotels.

When will Queen Elizabeth II's funeral take place?

queen funeral tour

The funeral is set to take place Monday, Sept. 19. Proceedings will begin with a muted bong from Big Ben at 9 a.m., with the great bell's hammer dampened by a specially made leather muffle. Her coffin will then be carried to Westminster Abbey, where the ceremony will take place at 11 a.m.

Where will the funeral take place?

Breaking hundreds of years of royal tradition, Queen Elizabeth II's funeral will be held at Westminster Abbey, where she was married and crowned. Not since 1760, following the death of George II, has a monarch's funeral taken place in the ancient abbey at Parliament Square.

Since then, all royal funerals have been held in St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle, including Prince Philip's COVID-19 -restricted service last year. The reason for the new venue? Not only was it where Elizabeth married Philip in 1947 and was crowned in 1953, but simply put, it is bigger and therefore better suited to accommodate the deluge of world dignitaries hoping to attend.

Where will the queen lie in state beforehand?

queen funeral tour

Starting Monday, Sept. 12, the queen's coffin will lie in state at St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh, Scotland. Mourners can view the coffin from 5 p.m., with a queuing system and tight security checks and restrictions on mobile phones. Photography of any kind will be strictly banned.

On Tuesday, Sept. 13, she will be taken to Buckingham Palace, where members of the royal family will have a chance to pay their respects privately.

On Wednesday, Sept. 14, the coffin will be transported to Westminster Hall to begin the lying-in-state, codenamed Operation Marquee. It will be placed on a raised catafalque at the center of the hall for exactly four days. Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to arrive to pay their respects, so if you are planning a visit, expect very long waits.

Some members of the royal family are also expected to pay their own tribute by standing guard around the coffin, a tradition called the Vigil of the Princes.

Will public transport in London run as usual?

queen funeral tour

It will, but expect central London on the day of the funeral to be very busy as vast crowds descend on the center of the city to be a part of the historic moment.

Travel chiefs have warned that services and stations will be "extremely busy" in the buildup to the funeral and asked people to avoid unnecessary travel if possible. They urged careful planning to anyone who must travel, particularly on rail, bus and air routes toward London.

The Rail Delivery Group announced that off-peak and super-off-peak ticket holders will be able to get fee-free refunds on tickets purchased before the queen's death was announced.

Transport for London warned of severe disruption to the capital's travel network as up to a million visitors descend on areas surrounding Buckingham Palace and Westminster.

Related: London Underground 101: A guide to getting the Tube in London

Andy Byford, the commissioner of Transport for London, said: "Thousands of people from all over the U.K. and beyond are expected to make their way to London to pay their respects. We are working with our partners to keep our city moving smoothly and to ensure that everyone who is planning to attend the memorial events can do so safely."

"Roads and public transport in central London will be very busy, so we advise everyone to allow plenty of extra time for their journeys and to avoid driving where possible."

Traveling to and from London airports and rail stations

queen funeral tour

The number of foreign dignitaries expected to arrive for the funeral is so high that the British government has urged them to fly on commercial flights to avoid airport disruption due to the influx of additional private jets.

Heathrow Airport (LHR) has said it will not be available for private flight arrangements and told heads of state to use other London airports if they cannot fly commercially.

If you're traveling through one of London's airports in the next week, you can expect increased security, potentially very long queues and large crowds.

Will there be a funeral procession?

queen funeral tour

Yes. On Wednesday, the queen's body will be taken from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall via the Mall, through Horse Guards and past the Cenotaph in a huge (and slow) procession made up of the military, other royals and possibly even the queen's beloved corgis.

It is said there will be space for up to a million members of the public to line the streets as the queen's coffin makes its final journey. The cortege's march will also be broadcast on large screens in the city's parks.

There will also be a similar procession at Windsor ahead of the committal service at St. George's Chapel.

Where will Queen Elizabeth II be buried?

She will be buried at King George VI Memorial Chapel at Windsor, to join her father, King George VI, and mother, Queen Elizabeth, as well as her sister, Princess Margaret.

Can I attend the funeral?

Not unless you are one of the 2,000 guests with an invitation. These are mostly the British royal family; past prime ministers; the queen's personal friends, ladies-in-waiting, and other private staff; as well as royal family members from countries around the world and also various heads of state.

Due to the demand, the U.K. government has even told foreign heads of state to keep their entourages light. Their guests have been limited to just spouses, and other family members have been asked to stay away.

Have any large-scale events been canceled?

King Charles III announced a bank holiday for the day of the funeral, so a lot of businesses will close for the day.

As a mark of respect, a host of events across the grief-stricken nation were canceled last weekend as the country entered an inevitable period of national mourning, including all Premier League football games as well as several other sporting events, and the last day of the BBC Proms. It remains to be seen if this weekend will see the same level of cancellations.

Shops may open on the day of the funeral, though the government has said any that wish to close may do so. Retailer John Lewis, for example, confirmed all of its department stores and Waitrose shops will close on the day of the funeral.

Using points and miles to fly to London

How can I pay my respects if I'm not in London?

The funeral will be televised live on the BBC and ITV for anyone who wants to watch it unfold.

At midday, a nationwide two-minute silence will also take place.

If you want to do something more personal, you can leave a message in an online book of condolence on the royal family's website . A selection of those messages will be passed on to members of the family, it says, and may be held in the Royal Archives for posterity.

Many local authorities have set up physical books of condolence in libraries, town halls and other civic buildings, as well as suggested places where flowers can be left.

The Queen of travel Journeys of a lifetime

By Francesca Street and Mark Oliver, CNN September 13, 2022

S he was traveling the moment she ascended to the throne, and for much of the next seven decades, Queen Elizabeth II criss-crossed the world. Newly married and still just a princess, Britain’s future monarch was in Kenya with husband Prince Philip in February 1952 when she learned of her father’s death and her new regal status.

During her reign she would visit more than 120 countries, witnessing first-hand the revolutions in global travel that shrank the world as her own influence over it diminished.

The Queen lived through the advent of the Jet Age, flew supersonic on the Concorde, saw regimes change, countries form and dissolve, the end of the British Empire and the rise of globalization.

Here are some of the most memorable travel moments from her 70 years as monarch.

November 24-25, 1953

Less than six months after she was crowned at Westminster Abbey in London, Queen Elizabeth set off on her travels again. Her debut official state trip was an epic six-month tour of the Commonwealth -- the alliance of nations which were once British colonies. Traveling by air, sea and land she visited several countries, accompanied by her husband, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh. First stop was the North Atlantic island of Bermuda, a British territory she would visit a further four times during her reign. The trip would go on to include stops in Jamaica, Tonga, New Zealand, Australia, Cocos Islands, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), Aden (now part of Yemen), Uganda, Malta and Gibraltar.

December 19-20, 1953

At Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in June 1953, Queen Salote Tupou III of the Polynesian kingdom of Tonga won over the British public when she sat, rain-soaked, in her open carriage. They also took an interest when Elizabeth returned the visit later in the year. The two queens enjoyed an open-air feast, watched Tongan dancers and admired a tortoise that legend said was presented by explorer Captain James Cook to the King of Tonga in 1777.

December 23, 1953 – January 30, 1954

New zealand.

The Queen voyaged to New Zealand during the Antipodean summer of 1953-4. Over the course of the trip, it’s estimated that three out of every four New Zealanders got a glimpse of her. In preparation for the Queen’s visit, some New Zealand sheep were dyed in the UK flag colors of red, white and blue. The Queen returned to the country nine times over the years, including in 2002 as she marked half a century on the throne.

April 10-21, 1954

Ceylon (now sri lanka).

A visit to Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, coincided with the Queen’s 28th birthday. She visited the city of Colombo where crowds joined together to sing her “Happy Birthday.” She also visited the central city of Kandy, where she watched a procession featuring a reported 140 elephants and met local chiefs.

April 8-11, 1957

The Queen had visited France as a young princess, but her first state visit as monarch was a glamorous affair. She attended the Palais Garnier opera house in Paris, visited the Palace of Versailles, and dined at the Louvre with then-President Rene Coty. The Queen also laid a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the Arc de Triomphe and visited the Scottish Church of Paris.

October 17-20, 1957

United states.

Having met President Harry S. Truman in Washington in 1951 during a visit before ascending to the throne, Elizabeth was no stranger to America when she arrived on her first trip as Queen. Her 1957 visit marked the 350th anniversary of the first permanent British settlement on the continent, in Jamestown. The monarch attended a college football game at the former Byrd Stadium in Maryland where she watched the home team lose to North Carolina. She met with President Dwight D. Eisenhower in the White House and later traveled to New York, where she and Prince Philip drove through the streets and admired panoramic views of the city from the Empire State Building.

February 1-16, 1961

The Queen and Prince Philip visited Pakistan in 1961, arriving in the port city of Karachi after completing a visit to India as part of a wider tour of South Asia. She drove through the streets of Karachi in an open-top car, before going on to visit Lahore, where a torchlight military tattoo took place in her honor and Prince Philip played in a game of polo.

February 26 to March 1, 1961

In Nepal, the Queen inspected troops in Kathmandu and met Gurkha ex-servicemen in Pokhara. The monarch rode on an elephant and visited the Hanuman Dhoka Palace complex in Kathmandu. She took part in the rather grim spectacle of a tiger hunt although didn’t shoot any animals herself. She instead recorded the experience on cine camera – a recording device that she often carried with her on her earlier foreign trips.

March 2-6, 1961

The Queen visited pre-revolution Iran at the end of her 1961 South Asian tour. Hosted by Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, she toured ancient monuments including the ruins of Persepolis, once a capital of the Achaemenid Empire, later declared a World Heritage Site. She also saw Sheikh Lotfollah mosque in Esfahan and admired collections of the Archaeological Museum of Iran.

May 5, 1961

Vatican city.

In 1961, Elizabeth became the first British monarch to visit the Vatican. Dressed all in black, the Queen had an audience with Pope John XXIII, also attended by Prince Philip. She returned to the Vatican three more times during her reign, meeting Pope John Paul II and Pope Francis.

November 9-20, 1961

Bombing incidents in the capital Accra left officials worried about the safety of the Queen’s visit to Ghana but, after deliberation, UK Prime Minister Harold Macmillan confirmed it would go ahead. During the trip, the Queen famously shared a dance with Ghana’s then-president, Kwame Nkrumah. At the height of Cold War uncertainty, this seemingly innocuous moment was seen as significant in ensuring Ghana remained affiliated to Britain and not the USSR.

May 18-28, 1965

West germany (now germany).

The Queen’s visit to West Germany and West Berlin was viewed as a symbolic gesture of goodwill in the post-World War II landscape. It was the first royal trip to German territory for more than 50 years and photographs such as one of the Queen and Prince Philip in a car driving past the Brandenburg Gate had symbolic resonance.

November 5-11, 1968

Queen Elizabeth became the first reigning British monarch to visit South America when she landed in Brazil in late 1968. During the trip, the Queen wore a striking jewelry set made of Brazilian aquamarine, gifted to her in 1953 by the Brazilian president and added to over time. The monarch also attended a football match between Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, and presented the winner’s trophy to Brazilian footballer Pele.

October 18-25, 1971

On the first of two trips to Turkey -- the second took place in 2008 -- the Queen visited the Gallipoli peninsula to remember the Allied soldiers who died there during World War I. The monarch also explored the ruins of the ancient Greek empire city of Ephesus. A media highlight of the visit came when she was photographed leaping ashore from a barge, after disembarking from her ship, the Royal Yacht Britannia.

February 10-15, 1972

Accompanied by Prince Philip and daughter Princess Anne, the Queen was greeted on arrival in Bangkok by a carpet of flower petals. The monarch was given a golden key to the city of Bangkok, attended a state banquet and visited Bang Pa-In Palace, the Thai royal family’s summer residence, north of the capital.

October 17-21, 1972

The Queen’s visit to Yugoslavia was her first trip to a communist country. The Central European country no longer exists -- the areas that the Queen visited are now part of Croatia. During her trip, she met Yugoslav political leader Josip Broz Tito and traveled on his famous Blue Train.

February 15-16, 1974

New hebrides (now vanuatu).

The Queen and Prince Philip visited the Pacific island archipelago of Vanuatu, then known as the New Hebrides, in 1974. It’s said the royal couple’s visit to Vanuatu may have strengthened the belief among some locals on Tanna island that the Duke of Edinburgh was a divine being.

February 24-March 1, 1975

On her first of two visits to Mexico, the Queen toured ancient sites -- including the pyramids of Uxmal, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The monarch also received local crafts, met school children and attended a banquet. While she was driven through Mexico City, the Queen was showered in confetti.

February 17-20, 1979

Saudi arabia.

In 1979, the Queen became the first female head of state to visit Saudi Arabia, on a tour of Gulf States. At Riyadh Airport, she was met by King Khalid bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, pictured. The outfits she wore on the trip were carefully designed in accordance with Saudi Arabia’s conservative dress code for women. The Queen arrived on a British Airways supersonic Concorde aircraft and during the visit attended camel races and toured the National Museum.

October 26-27, 1982

The Queen visited Tuvalu, a group of nine islands in the South Pacific, in 1982. Upon arrival, the Queen and Prince Philip were carried in a flower-filled canoe from sea to shore. Thirty years later, in 2012, Prince William visited Tuvalu with his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge, who drank a coconut from a tree planted by Queen Elizabeth on this 1982 visit.

February 26 – March 6, 1983

On a star-studded trip to the United States, the Queen toured the 20th Century-Fox studios in Hollywood with then-First Lady Nancy Reagan and met Frank Sinatra, who she’d previously met in the 1950s, at a party given in her honor. The Queen and Prince Philip also visited Yosemite National Park in California, pictured.

November 10-14, 1983

The Queen returned to Kenya in 1983 for a state visit. When she was there 31 years previously, she'd learned that her father had passed away and she had become Britain’s reigning monarch. In 1983, the Queen and Prince Philip revisited the Treetops hotel, pictured, where they were staying at the time she was told the news.

October 12-18, 1986

The Queen’s trip to China was the first -- and, so far, only -- state visit by a British monarch to China. With Prince Philip by her side, the Queen visited the Great Wall of China, pictured, as well as the Forbidden City in Beijing.

October 17-20, 1994

In 1994, in another royal first, the Queen visited Russia. Over the three-day trip, the Queen met Moscow mayor Yuri Luzhkov, pictured here with the monarch outside St Basil’s Cathedral, as well as Russian President Boris Yeltsin. The Queen also attended the Bolshoi Ballet. In her traditional Christmas Day speech broadcast later that year, the Queen reflected on how times had changed, noting she “never thought it would be possible in [her] lifetime” to attend a service in Moscow’s famous cathedral.

March 19-25, 1995

South africa.

In 1994, after apartheid ended, South Africa rejoined the Commonwealth as a republic. The following year, the Queen traveled there, in a visit designed to renew ties between the two countries. The Queen met with President Nelson Mandela, pictured, and presented him with the Order of Merit.

October 12-18, 1997

The Queen visited India for the third time in 1997, her first public engagement since Princess Diana’s funeral just weeks before. The trip marked 50 years since India’s independence from Britain. Most memorably, the monarch visited the site of the Amritsar massacre, also known as the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, of April 13, 1919. She also expressed regret at a state banquet in New Delhi for the “distressing” episode in which British soldiers gunned down hundreds of unarmed civilians. The gesture was seen by some as inadequate. “The Queen is doing everything she can to make India like her. But so far it does not seem to be working,” wrote the UK’s Independent newspaper at the time.

October 4-15, 2002

The Queen visited Canada many times. In 2002, her trip to the North American country coincided with her Golden Jubilee festivities, celebrating 50 years of her reign. During the trip, the Queen attended an ice hockey game between the Vancouver Canucks and the San Jose Sharks, and dropped the ceremonial puck.

March 11-16, 2006

The Queen visited Australia 16 times as Head of State. In 2006, she traveled to Melbourne to open the Commonwealth Games. She was greeted by a welcoming party in Canberra, visited the Sydney Opera House, attended a Commonwealth Day service in St. Andrew’s Cathedral and toured Admiralty House, the Sydney residence of the Governor-General of Australia.

May 17-20, 2011

The Queen’s trip to Dublin was the first time a British monarch had set foot in the Irish Republic since its 1922 independence. At Dublin Castle the Queen delivered a well-received speech on the history of Anglo-Irish relations. In County Tipperary, she also toured the medieval Rock of Cashel, pictured, once a seat of power for Ireland’s ancient kings.

November 26-28, 2015

From 1949 to 1951, before she was Queen, Elizabeth and Prince Philip lived in Malta. In 2015, the monarch paid her last visit to the island, touring the Grand Harbour in a Maltese fishing boat and waving to members of the British Royal Navy.

United Kingdom

In the later years of her reign, the Queen cut back on foreign travel, passing on the mantle to the younger royals. In more recent years, royal tours have also been looked at with more skeptical eyes, as Britain reckons with its colonial past.

While she didn't travel abroad in the later years of her reign, the Queen continued to vacation in the UK. Most notably, the Queen’s ties with Scotland remained strong throughout her reign and her residence there, Balmoral Castle, was a favorite refuge. It was at Balmoral that the Queen died on September 8, 2022.

Queen and Adam Lambert kick off tour with pomp, vigor and the spirit of Freddie Mercury

queen funeral tour

BALTIMORE – Who knew we needed the dazzling showmanship, the unmatched catalog of layered pop rock and the undiminished musicianship of Queen + Adam Lambert this much?

The band rooted by original guitarist (and noted astrophysicist) Sir Brian May and suave drummer Roger Taylor hasn’t played stateside in four years, when its Rhapsody tour first launched.

On Wednesday, at the first of two shows at Baltimore’s CFG Bank Arena, the Queen + Lambert extravaganza reignited for a 23-date tour that will run through November in all of its garish glory.

Here are some highlights from the tour kickoff, a 27-song master class in potent songs and delicate homage with the magnetic Lambert its humble ringleader.

What songs do Queen + Adam Lambert play on the 2023 Rhapsody tour?

Playing off the futuristic feel of the staging – lots of chrome and robots on video screens – the band kicked off the two-hour-plus show with “Radio Ga Ga,” the hand-clapping 1984 hit that found the platinum-haired Lambert strutting the stage in a silver breastplate and cape .

Though the band brought the Rhapsody production to Europe last summer, the set list has been jiggled and peppered with some different songs, including the rough-riffing “Stone Cold Crazy” – played for the first time since 2018 – and the magnificently theatrical “The Show Must Go On.”

Queen also unveiled “Is This the World We Created…?” from 1984’s “The Works” album, which has never been played in the decade that Lambert has fronted the band. Sitting at the end of a catwalk with only May, 76, on acoustic guitar, Lambert showcased the purity of his versatile voice on the ballad.

The multigenerational crowd also lapped up plenty of well-worn classic rock radio staples. “Another One Bites the Dust” needed only its opening bass notes from Neil Fairclough for recognition; “Somebody to Love” spotlighted a soulful Lambert spreading his multi-octave voice across the song; and “Bohemian Rhapsody” wrapped the pre-encore set instilled with Lambert’s dramatic entrance from beneath the stage, May sporting a mirrored jumpsuit amid a blizzard of lights and the original Queen video for the song employed to handle the tricky operatic passage in the song.

How does Freddie Mercury factor into the Queen + Adam Lambert tour?

The naysayers who contend that Queen has been nothing but a cover band with Lambert at the helm need to take a seat. Lambert’s respect for Mercury has always been palpable, and at Wednesday’s show, you could see his subtle nods to the original Queen frontman, who died in 1991.

Mercury surely would have swooned at the ornately decorated rotating motorcycle that Lambert sat atop – complete with a crotch cam – for the pairing of “Bicycle Race” and “Fat Bottomed Girls” and grinned at Lambert’s shoulder shimmies worthy of Liza Minnelli in her prime during an adrenalized “Don’t Stop Me Now.”

But Mercury was remembered in a more direct way when Lambert, 41, praised the “two rock ‘n’ roll legends” sharing the stage with him and continued with, “We do this with Freddie in our hearts, and I know he’s in your heart.”

A couple of songs later, May, as he has done on past tours, took a solo turn at the edge of the catwalk to sing “Love of My Life” in a tender voice. It was a chill-inducing moment when he asked the crowd to hold up their lighted phones (“In the old days it used to be candles,” he joked) while footage of Mercury crooning the ballad appeared in split screen with May on the overhead curved video screen.

Who else is playing with Queen + Adam Lambert?

While the sweetly grinning May mesmerized with his distinctive guitar lines throughout the show and Taylor, dapper in a black tie and vest, steamrolled through demanding songs at age 74, the multilayered construction of the band’s songs require a bit more of a lift.

Joining May, Taylor, Lambert and Fairclough were longtime keyboardist and musical director Spike Edney and percussionist Tyler Warren, who frequently jammed alongside Taylor on these musically precise classics.

With a combination of exceptional lighting and voluminous slices of lasers, the scorched-earth singing of Lambert and the continued expert presentation from May and Taylor, this Rhapsody tour doesn’t feel like a victory lap, but, rather, a deeper solidifying of Queen’s legacy.

About BABYMETAL

In April 2016, BABYMETAL became the first Japanese artists to ever headline at the prestigious Wembley Arena in the UK. In June 2019, they performed at one of the world’s largest music festivals, Glastonbury Festival, and their appearance at this festival made headlines around the world. That same year in September, BABYMETAL embarked on their METAL GALAXY WORLD TOUR. On October 11th, 2019 BABYMETAL had a worldwide release of their 3rd album METAL GALAXY and on that same day, they had their first U.S. headlining arena show at The Forum in Los Angeles, California. METAL GALAXY ranked No. 13 on the US Billboard Top 200 (Albums Chart), largely surpassing their own record of their previous album, and ranked No.1 on the Top Rock Albums Chart for the first time ever as an Asian artist. In the UK Official Charts, the album consecutively ranked in the Official Albums Chart Top 20 from their previous album and ranked No.1 on the Rock & Metal Albums Chart for the first time in history as a Japanese artist.

In 2021, over a four month period from January to April, they accomplished a total of 10 headline performances at the Nippon Budokan called 10 BABYMETAL BUDOKAN. After a 2-year hiatus from live performances, BABYMETAL were unsealed for BABYMETAL RETURNS – THE OTHER ONE – where they performed at Makuhari Messe.

Riding the success of last year’s concept album “THE OTHER ONE”, Dance Metal sensation BABYMETAL hosted  the first edition of their very own festival FOX_FEST last month, featuring exclusive appearances by ELECTRIC CALLBOY, POLYPHIA and BILMURI. Always pushing boundaries and testing the limits of metal music, BABYMETAL are no strangers to collaborations, with recent partnerships including BRING ME THE HORIZON, TOM MORELLO and LIL UZI VERT. The two-day visit to the Faroe Islands was in the royal diary for next week but has had to be postponed due to strike action.

The Danish royal household announced the change to the itinerary on Wednesday, saying they hope to make the trip later this year but no new date has been set as yet.

The news came as members of the Danish royal family marked the 175th anniversary of Constitution Day - a day celebrating Danish parliament's first constitution.

King Frederik along with Queen Mary, Queen Margrethe and Princess Benedikte attended a service at Holmens Church, in Copenhagen, on Wednesday morning.

Queen Mary shared a laugh with her mother-in-law, Queen Margrethe, when the duo realised their hats were too big to greet each other with kisses on the cheek as they usually do.

This prompted Mary to blow kisses to Margrethe and her sister Benedikte.

The interaction even drew a cheeky grin from King Frederik as he walked on ahead.

Later on Wednesday evening the royal will gather again to celebrate the big anniversary with an official recpetion in the former upper chamber at Christiansborg.

Practice your bows and curtsies: European royalty is coming to Upstate New York this month.

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima, of the Netherlands, will visit Albany on Wednesday, June 12, as part of a days-long trip to the U.S. highlighting bilateral ties between the Kingdom of the Netherlands and the United States. The Dutch king and queen will also visit Georgia, the Netherlands’ 10th largest U.S. trade partner, and New York City between June 10-13.

According to the Times-Union , King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima are scheduled to visit Gov. Kathy Hochul at the Governor’s Mansion on Wednesday, meet CEOs of Dutch companies active in the Capital Region, and tour the NY CREATES nanotech hub near the University at Albany. The king will also give remarks at a business seminar about furthering cooperation in semiconductor research, development and production.

The royals are also scheduled for an afternoon trip to the Schuyler Mansion State Historic Site, once the home of Dutch General Philip J. Schuyler and his wife, Catherine Van Rensselaer, for a discussion on climate change with youth. Schuyler was a Revolutionary War general and a U.S. Senator in America’s first Congress; the mansion is where his daughter Elizabeth Schuyler married Founding Father Alexander Hamilton.

King Willem-Alexander is also expected to deliver a short address at a network event at the Governor’s Mansion in the evening.

“I hope this visit and others like it in the future continue to build upon our mutual respect and appreciation for one another and foster even greater partnership and collaboration for generations to come,” Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan said in a statement.

According to WTEN, Albany’s relationship with the Netherlands dates back 400 years, as Dutch colonists settled in the area and built Fort Orange in 1624. Historic sites with Dutch ties include The Old English Pub, also known as the Old Dutch Pub, the second oldest house in Albany; the Van Ostrande-Radliff House, built in 1728, the only surviving Dutch urban timber framed building left in the country; the Ten Broeck Mansion; and Cherry Hill. The city’s annual Tulip Festival also features a traditional Dutch street-scrubbing ceremony.

The Times-Union reports King Willem-Alexander’s mother, Princess Beatrix, previously visited Albany in 1959. Willem-Alexander succeeded his mother as monarch in 2013. He and his wife, Máxima, have three daughters: Princess Catharina-Amalia, Princess Alexia and Princess Ariane.

“With more than 5 million Americans tracing their roots to the Netherlands, there are close personal and cultural links between our countries,” the Royal House of the Netherlands said . “The U.S. is the Netherlands’ biggest non-EU partner in regard to economic and security cooperation. These close transatlantic ties are essential in safeguarding the Netherlands’ prosperity. This partnership is based on a shared history that goes back 400 years.”

Grayson murray remembered by pga tour peers at celebration of life at 2024 memorial tournament, share this article.

DUBLIN, Ohio — They showed up by the dozens Tuesday to remember one of their own. And during the celebration of life service at Muirfield Village Golf Club, as Grayson Murray was being mourned by his PGA Tour peers tears flowed and hugs happened.

Here was Scottie Scheffler breaking down as he described Murray as a “sweet guy” who recently gave the impression he was in a better mental space after struggling with alcoholism and depression for years.

Here was PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan, struggling to speak as he related how he and Murray had mended fences as they encouraged one another to prioritize mental health.

Here were Justin Thomas, Max Homa, Billy Horschel, Lucas Glover and Keegan Bradley, emotions exposed for all to see.

Here were Jack and Barbara Nicklaus, solemnly taking it all in.

Memorial: Picks to win | Photos

All told, a majority of the 73 players entered in this week’s Memorial Tournament showed up out of respect for Murray, who committed suicide May 28 at age 30 after battling alcoholism and depression for much of his life.

Monahan’s words were especially moving, considering how he and Murray were at odds during a players meeting last June to go over details of the proposed deal between the Tour and Saudi Public Investment Fund. The outspoken Murray lambasted Monahan for keeping the deal secret from the Tour players. But a few weeks later, after Monahan took a leave of absence to deal with anxiety, Murray sent the commissioner a text message saying, “I just want you to get healthy.”

“The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a family member you can never put the pieces completely back together,” Monahan told the crowd of players, caddies and members of the public who watched the celebration from above Memorial Park, the area where tournament honorees are commemorated with bronze markers.

Monahan remarked how the tour is marked by competition, but stressed that the fellowship among players is a “brotherhood that transcends competition.”

Murray’s caddie, Jay Green, described Murray as being exceptionally generous. After winning the Sony Open in Hawaii in January, Murray bought Green a Rolex watch he knew the caddie wanted.

PGA Tour chaplain Brad Payne oversaw the celebration, encouraging hurting players to refrain from guilting themselves.

“Wondering ‘Is there anything more I could have done?’ is not fruitful,” Payne said.

Heads nodded.

After Russell Henley read a message from fellow Tour player and Murray friend Webb Simpson, who was not in attendance, Scheffler stepped forward and told about how thrilled Murray was to win $100 off Scheffler during a practice round at the Players Championship.

“He couldn’t wipe the smile off his face,” Scheffler said, managing a smile below his tears. Scheffler then urged players to never try to go it alone on Tour, because isolation is the enemy of seeking friendship.

“It’s easier to struggle in light than in darkness,” he said.

And with that, a prayer was offered and a bagpiper strolled through the audience playing “Amazing Grace.”

Bob spent the last year on the road with Madonna for her Celebration World Tour , serving as the emcee for her decades-spanning setlist. Speaking to Billboard in 2023 before the tour started, Bob said that working with the pop legend had already proven to be a validating experience. “She respects me in a way that doesn’t feel like a novelty,” he said. “Obviously, what matters most is how I feel about myself, but  still , a stamp of approval from Madonna is just like … ‘What?!'”

PGA TOUR winner Grayson Murray passes away at 30

PGA TOUR winner Grayson Murray passes away at 30

Change Text Size

Grayson Murray, who won his second PGA TOUR title at this year’s Sony Open in Hawaii, passed away Saturday.

"We were devastated to learn – and are heartbroken to share – that PGA TOUR player Grayson Murray passed away this morning. I am at a loss for words,” PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan said. “The PGA TOUR is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.

“I reached out to Grayson’s parents to offer our deepest condolences, and during that conversation, they asked that we continue with tournament play,” Commissioner Monahan continued. “They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so. As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes.”

Grief counselors were made available at the venues for this week’s PGA TOUR and Korn Ferry Tour events. Commissioner Monahan, who traveled from TOUR headquarters in Florida to the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, said he was "devastated" by the loss.

Grayson's parents, Eric and Terry Murray, said in a statement Sunday that the cause of death was suicide .

"Was Grayson loved? The answer is yes," his parents wrote. "By us, his brother Cameron, his sister Erica, all of his extended family, by his friends, by his fellow players and – it seems – by many of you who are reading this. He was loved and he will be missed."

Murray, 30, was a standout golfer from his youth. He won three consecutive Callaway Junior World Championships (2006-08) and was the top-ranked golfer in his age group. He made his first cut on the Korn Ferry Tour at age 16, becoming the second-youngest player ever to do so. After stints at Wake Forest University, East Carolina University and Arizona State University, he got the break he needed in 2016 when he was given a sponsor exemption into the Korn Ferry Tour event near his hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina. He finished inside the top 10 at that event, the Rex Hospital Open, which qualified him for another start. When he posted another top 10 at the BMW Charity Pro-Am, his professional career took off. He concluded his season with a victory at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Championship to finish second on the Korn Ferry Tour money list and earn full status on the PGA TOUR for the 2016-17 season. The win came a week before his 23rd birthday.

Murray wasted little time establishing himself on golf’s biggest stage as a rookie. He won the 2017 Barbasol Championship while still just 23 years old. His final-round 68 not only secured a one-shot victory, but also solidified a two-year exemption through the 2019 PGA TOUR season. He finished 66th in the FedExCup and earned nearly $1.5 million.

Grayson struggled for the next few seasons on the PGA TOUR. In 2023, he found his game again on the Korn Ferry Tour; he notched two victories – the Advent Health Championship in Kansas City and the Simmons Bank Open outside of Nashville – to finish fourth on that tour’s points list and earn a spot back onto the PGA TOUR for the following season.

Murray opened the 2024 season with a playoff victory at the Sony Open in Hawaii. He made a clutch up and down on the 72nd hole for a birdie to force a playoff. Then he sank a 40-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole to defeat Byeong Hun An and Keegan Bradley. He reached a career-high 46th in the Official World Golf Ranking after that victory.
