Rod Stewart Kicks off 2022 Tour With Cheap Trick: Set Lists

Rod Stewart launched his 2022 North American tour last night at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles with special guests Cheap Trick .

He opened his set with another tribute to Robert Palmer , once again performing 1986's " Addicted to Love " as he did during May concerts in Las Vegas. Stewart has called Palmer a " good mate of mine ."

Eschewing tracks from his most recent album, 2021's The Tears of Hercules , Stewart instead gave the crowd a career-spanning set that stuck to his most well-known hits. He touched on '80s favorites like "Young Turks" and "Some Guys Have All The Luck," while also making room for earlier chestnuts like "You Wear It Well" and "Maggie May." The lone entry from Stewart's era with  Faces came in the form of the staple "Ooh La La."

Earlier, Cheap Trick powered through a raucous 13-song opening set that packed in a power hour's worth of classics like "Dream Police," "Surrender" and "I Want You to Want Me." "Downed," from 1977's In Color , was a particular highlight of their performance. You can view the set lists for Rod Stewart and Cheap Trick below.

Stewart's North American shows in Vancouver, Seattle, San Francisco, San Diego, Phoenix and Denver were recently rescheduled, reportedly due to " production delays ." Those concerts will now take place in 2023. Later this year, Stewart will return for a five-date Las Vegas residency, followed by a string of U.K. shows in November and December and another batch of North American dates in 2023.

He's indicated that these shows might be the last to feature his catalog of hits. Instead, Stewart tells Forbes that he'd like to focus on the Great American Songbook. He's currently working on an album in that genre with pianist Jools Holland.

"I want to move on and just do the classics and the swing stuff, but I don't want to be singing 'Hot Legs' when I'm 80," he said. "I'm not retiring, but this will be the last time we do these songs in America. I just want to make a clean sweep. I want to go on tour with a big band and just play this stuff that I love. It's a different entity to rock 'n' roll, although that's where it all came from. The way we are doing these songs is with a back beat. I wish I could describe it. On '23, I'll go to Brazil and wrap it all up."

Stewart's current North American tour will conclude on Sept. 3, in Tampa, Fla.

Rod Stewart Recruits Cheap Trick for North American Summer Tour

By Ryan Reed

Rod Stewart will team with Cheap Trick for a North American summer tour. The 21-date trek launches July 21st in Cleveland, Ohio and wraps September 5th in Chicago.

Tickets for most shows go on sale Friday, January 10th at 10 a.m. local time via Live Nation. The on-sale for the Raleigh, North Carolina and Mansfield, Massachusetts dates begins Saturday, January 11 at 10 a.m. local time.

Rod Stewart fan club members can access a special pre-sale that opens Tuesday, January 7th at 10 a.m. local time via the singer’s website. The Cheap Trick fan club will begin its own pre-sale on Wednesday, January 8th at 10 a.m. local time via their site. A Citi card pre-sale spans Tuesday, January 7th at 10 a.m. through Thursday, January 9th at 10 p.m. local time.

Stewart’s 2020 schedule also includes a February 23rd concert in Hollywood, Florida, along with a continuation of his live residency at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. That run currently kicks off March 6th and carries through the 21st; after a lengthy break, it resumes September 18th through October 10th.

The touring follows Stewart’s latest studio album , You’re In My Heart: Rod Stewart With The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra ; the career-spanning project, which features revamped versions of his classic songs, blends his original vocal tracks with new symphonic arrangements. And he’s already eyeing another sonic experiment for his next LP. “I’m trying to put together a country record,” Stewart told Rolling Stone . “Not just country music, but folk music and older stuff I was brought up on. It’s an opportunity to let people hear another side of me.”

Meanwhile, the singer is facing a misdemeanor count of simple battery following an altercation during a New Year’s Eve party at a Florida resort. Witnesses told police that Stewart’s son Sean pushed a security guard while Rod punched the alleged victim in the ribs area; after viewing security video footage, authorities called the Stewarts “primary aggressors” in the incident. Though neither were arrested, both Rod and Sean were ordered to appear at the Palm Beach County Criminal Justice Complex on February 5th.

Forever young? No. But Rod Stewart is forever youthful in his Phoenix concert

rod stewart tour with cheap trick

At 78, Rod Stewart can’t exactly be expected to turn in a vocal performance to rival those from the days of “Maggie May” and “Every Picture Tells a Story.”

But that hardly seemed to matter by the time he kicked that soccer ball into the audience on “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy” while bringing a nearly two-hour performance that featured many of the staples that continue to define him to a spirited conclusion Friday, Aug. 4, at Footprint Center in Phoenix.

He may have sung a different melody, the better to avoid the high notes on the back half of the chorus, when he dusted off his classic version of “The First Cut Is the Deepest.” And there is a chance “You Wear it Well,” the night’s first ballad, left some concertgoers wondering if maybe he just wasn’t up to the challenge.

Amazing vocals on 'I'd Rather Go Blind' and 'Have I Told You Lately'

For the most part, though, he sounded great, especially on the gospel-flavored ballad “I’d Rather Go Blind,” a song made popular by Etta James that Stewart said he first heard by the late Christine McVie when she sang for a group called Chicken Shack, pre-Fleetwood Mac.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

That deeply soulful vocal was a jaw-dropping reminder that the man has always been one of the more expressive singers in the history of rock 'n' roll. So was the version of “People Get Ready” that he dedicated to the late Jeff Beck, who played guitar on Stewart’s hit recording of that Curtis Mayfield classic.

Other vocal highlights ranged from “Ooh La La,” a Faces song that featured photos of Stewart and his bandmates from the album cover on the screen behind the stage, to Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Have You Ever Seen the Rain?,” one of many fiddle-driven songs that found him channeling the spirit of his early solo years, and "Have I Told You Lately."

At times, it all came down to Stewart’s phrasing and the character he brings to his performance, from the ‘80s hit “Young Turks” to that joyful rendition of “You’re In My Heart (The Final Acclaim)” and the full-tilt rock ‘n’ roll abandon of the Faces’ “Stay With Me” that Stewart wisely held back for the encore.

His first-topping single "Maggie May," was a bit of train wreck due to some technical difficulties that resulted in his microphone not being turned on when he came out of an instrumental break. He even stopped the song and brought a member of his crew onstage for fans to boo him before starting over. But his vocals sounded great.

Of course, there’s more to a Rod Stewart concert than the actual singing. He’s a charismatic entertainer who knows exactly how to work a crowd.

RIP, legend: Remembering Jack Curtis, the 'patron saint' who shaped the Phoenix rock 'n' roll scene

Forever young? We'll take forever youthful

At 78, forever young may be a lot to ask. But Stewart does appear forever youthful, from the roguish, self-effacing charm with which he spun the yarn of his first sexual encounter (“It was over very, very quickly,” he assured us) to the mic-stand-twirling stage moves and, of course, the kicking of the soccer balls.

And no, it doesn’t hurt that he still looks the part, his shirt unbuttoned nearly to his navel for much of the concert with the confidence it takes to get away with that at Stewart’s age. I can assure you, many people in that building would’ve checked yes in a heartbeat in response to “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy?”

He’s still got the moves as well. That much was clear from the opening number, Robert Palmer’s “Addicted to Love,” which Stewart performed surrounded by the women in his band, who were dressed for the occasion like the women in that classic Palmer video. That was a nice touch.

Speaking of the women in his stellar backing band, who added fiddle, harp – yes, harp! – and mandolin to the proceedings, all while rocking sequined go-go dresses, Stewart’s female backup singers took the spotlight, singing “Lady Marmalade” and “I’m Every Woman,” while he ducked off stage to slip into another outfit.

As he told the crowd at one point, “Fashion comes and goes, but style is classic.”

Dedications to Jeff Beck, Tina Turner, Christine McVie and Ukraine

Those outfits included a blue and gold combo he told us was chosen in honor of the Ukranian flag as he dedicated “Rhythm of My Heart” to the people of Ukraine and president Volodymyr Zelensky. That song was among the emotional highlights of the concert, as anti-war images flooded the video screen.

It was a night of dedications – Zelensky, Beck, McVie and Tina Turner. He revisited the Marvin Gaye-Kim Weston duet he and Turner covered, “It Takes Two,” another chance to shine a spotlight on his backup singers.

There’s been talk that this is Stewart’s final rock ‘n’ roll tour, largely driven by media outlets misrepresenting something Stewart said in clickbait headlines. But there was nothing in Friday’s performance to suggest that we were seeing someone ready to stop singing “Stay With Me” anytime soon.

Here's the trick: How an Arizona legend paved his way to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with a junkyard find

Cheap Trick rocked 'I Want You to Want Me,' 'Surrender' and more

Cheap Trick made Footprint Center feel a little like the Budokan, the Tokyo arena where they famously recorded their iconic breakthrough album, with a crowd-pleasing opening set that welcomed fans to the arena with “Hello There.”

You could teach a master class in how this rock ‘n’ roll thing should be done by repeating everything they did in the course of a raucous performance that touched on such obvious highlights as “Ain’t That a Shame” and “California Man” before powering through the unabashed hit parade that brought things to a rousing finish.

As they were nearing the end of their performance, Robin Zander eased into the ‘80s power ballad that remains their biggest hit, “The Flame,” on acoustic guitar, his bandmates holding off for dramatic effect.

That song touched off a massive singalong, of course, giving way to the power-pop classics “I Want You to Want Me,” “Dream Police,” “Surrender” and “Goodnight Now.”

Robin Zander's vocal were amazing, especially on 'The Flame'

Zander’s vocals were amazing, especially impressive on the high note he held for what seemed like forever on the final chorus of “The Flame.”

Guitarist Rick Nielsen remains a joy to witness, a brilliant guitarist who grabbed the vocal spotlight with gusto on the bridge of “Dream Police.”

And bassist Tom Petersson showed exactly what he brings to the equation quoting Jimi Hendrix in the course of a 12-string bass solo before taking his turn on lead vocals for “I Know What I Want.”

The other member of the classic lineup – drummer Bun E. Carlos – hasn’t toured with Cheap Trick since 2010. But Nielsen’s son Zaxx has really grown into the role on a drums, a point made abundantly clear on the intro to “Ain’t That a Shame.” And Zander’s son, Robin Taylor, did a great job of fleshing things out on guitar and backing vocals, taking his turn on lead vocals for “Downed.”

It was everything a Cheap Trick concert should’ve been in 2023.

CHEAP TRICK Announces October 2023 U.S. Tour Dates

Legendary rockers CHEAP TRICK have announced a series of new headlining dates for this fall. The trek kicks off on October 2 in Springfield, Missouri and ends on October 22 in Reno, Nevada.

Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday, July 14.

CHEAP TRICK will spend August opening for Rod Stewart and will also make a couple of festival appearances — in late July at the Dragway 42 Music Festival in West Salem, Ohio and in September at the Tennessee Soybean Festival .

Newly announced tour dates:

Oct. 02 - Springfield, MO @ Gillioz Theatre Oct. 03 - Omaha, NE @ Orpheum Theater Oct. 05 - Salina, KS @ Stiefel Theater for the Performing Arts Oct. 06 - Sioux City, IA @ The Sioux City Orpheum Oct. 08 - Colorado Springs, CO @ Pikes Peak Center for the Performing Arts Oct. 09 - Albuquerque, NM @ Revel ABQ Oct. 11 - Tucson, AZ - Rialto Theatre Oct. 12 - Las Vegas, NV @ Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort Oct. 14 - Temecula, CA @ Pechanga Theater Oct. 15 - Bakersfield, CA @ Fox Theater Oct. 18 - Fresno, CA @ Warnors Theatre Oct. 19 - Modesto, CA @ Gallo Center for the Arts Oct. 21 - Oroville, CA @ Gold Country Casino Oct. 22 - Reno, NV @ Grand Theatre

Founded in 1974, CHEAP TRICK is an indisputable American institution, beloved around the globe for its instantly identifiable, hugely influential, brand of pop-rock 'n' roll. The bandmembers are true pioneers with an unparalleled streak of certifiably classic tunes, from "He's A Whore" , "California Man" and "Dream Police" to "Surrender" , "I Want You To Want Me" and the worldwide No. 1 hit single "The Flame" .

2016 saw CHEAP TRICK inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame , a long-overdue acknowledgment of a nearly five-decade career that has earned them more than 40 international gold and platinum certifications, myriad awards and industry honors, featured appearances on over 20 movie soundtracks, and total record sales well in excess of 20 million.

CHEAP TRICK 's current lineup includes three of its original members: singer Robin Zander , guitarist Rick Nielsen and bassist Tom Petersson . Drummer Bun E. Carlos stopped touring with the band in 2010 and was replaced by Nielsen 's son Daxx . Rounding out CHEAP TRICK 's current touring lineup is Robin Zander 's son, Robin Taylor Zander , on rhythm guitar and vocals.

CHEAP TRICK 's 20th studio album, "In Another World" , was released in April 2021 via BMG . Produced by longtime associate Julian Raymond , the LP saw CHEAP TRICK doing what they do better than anyone — crafting indelible rock 'n' roll with oversized hooks, mischievous lyrics, and seemingly inexorable energy.

"In Another World" — which marked CHEAP TRICK 's first new LP since 2017's double-header of "We're All Alright!" and "Christmas Christmas" — showcased CHEAP TRICK at their most eclectic, touching on a myriad of distinct sounds and song approaches, from the swampy Chicago blues number "Final Days" (featuring fiery harmonica from Grammy Award -nominated singer and WET WILLIE frontman Jimmy Hall ) to a timely rendition of John Lennon 's still-relevant "Gimme Some Truth" , originally released for Record Store Day Black Friday 2019 and featuring the instantly recognizable guitar sound of erstwhile SEX PISTOLS guitarist Steve Jones .

Rod Stewart to tour with Cheap Trick this summer

Rod Stewart lines up summer tour with Cheap Trick as support across North America - tickets on sale this week

Rod Stewart and Cheap Trick

Rod Stewart will tour across North America this summer with Cheap Trick in support.

The news has been confirmed by Rolling Stone , who say that the run of shows will get under way at the Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls on July 21 and wrap up at Tinley Park’s Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre on September 5.

Tickets will go on sale later this week through Stewart’s website and via Cheap Trick’s site .

News of the tour comes with Stewart facing a misdemeanour count of simple battery after allegedly hitting a security guard at a new year party in Florida.

Although Stewart wasn’t arrested on New Year’s Eve, both he and his son Sean have been ordered to appear at the Palm Beach County Criminal Justice Complex in early February.

In September last year, Stewart revealed he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2017 , and revealed the news at a benefit show for the Prostate Project and European Tour Foundation with Ronnie Wood and Kenney Jones in the UK.

He told the crowd at the Wentworth Club in Surrey: “Two years ago I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. No one knows this, but I thought this was about time I told everybody.

Sir Rod Stewart is timeless. The legendary rock singer, who’s now 77, still has the energy of a robust performer. There is no stopping the Hall of Famer from coming out and performing in front of his fans – a whopping 38 shows in 2022 just for North America! This multi-award-winning singer-songwriter is considered one of the best-selling artists of all time, with 250 million records sold. Moreover, with several number 1 singles and albums and being a mainstay at music charts during his prime, the rock singer remains an icon to this very day.

Music | patterson fire and corral fire both 92% contained, cal fire reports, subscriber only, music | review: two legendary classic rock acts delight fans in decidedly different ways, rod stewart, cheap trick performed at shoreline amphitheatre.

Yet, they both definitely share one thing in common: The ability to put broad smiles on thousands of faces.

Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Rod Stewart and Cheap Trick underscored that point on Tuesday (Aug. 8) during a fun combo concert that drew some 10,000 fans to Shoreline Amphitheatre at Mountain View.

Cheap Trick was the first to take the stage, delighting the audience with a 13-song set of satisfyingly rough-around-the-edges power pop and classic rock.

The band was in top form, powered by founding members Rick Nielsen on guitar and Tom Petersson on bass as well as longtime vocalist Robin Zander. Daxx Nielsen — Rick’s son — provided the beat, having taken over on the kit for Cheap Trick’s wonderful original drummer, Bun E. Carlos, in 2010. Another band-member offspring — Robin Taylor Zander — performed on rhythm guitar and handled lead vocals on a solid version of “Downed” (from Cheap Trick’s classic 1977 outing, “In Color”).

The first was the Rockford, Illinois band’s powerful take on “California Man,” which hails from the discography of Jeff Lynne’s pre-ELO band — The Move — although this particular number was written by Roy Wood, not Lynne. Cheap Trick made this song its own, ironically by incorporating a riff from another Move song into the mix, on 1978’s “Heaven Tonight.”

The quintet then moved into its best-known cover, “Ain’t That a Shame,” a charged-up take on the soulful ’50s classic that its original vocalist — Fats Domino — reportedly adored. The Cheap Trick rendition remains one of the best updates of an early rock tune, just a notch or two below what ELO did in reimagining Chuck Berry’s “Roll Over Beethoven.”

People were smiling from ear to ear and singing along at top volume, as the group settled into greatest hits territory. “The Flame” surely brought back memories of countless high school dances, reminiscences that were quickly replaced by thoughts of turning original vinyl (and 8-track tape) editions of “At Budokan” all the way up, as the group powered through “I Want You To Want Me” and “Surrender” at Shoreline.

Having opened their set with “Hello There,” Cheap Trick completed the musical arc by bidding fans adieu in two languages — with “Auf Wiedersehen” and “Goodnight.”

Following a short break, Stewart opened his approximately two-hour set with the first of many covers of the night, as he belted out Robert Palmer’s iconic ’80s number “Addicted to Love.”

“We’ve gotten off to a fine start tonight,” the 78-year-old Londoner told the crowd. “Cheap Trick was amazing, were they not?”

Stewart, who has sold some 120 million albums during a career that stretches back to the ’60s, also sounded pretty amazing as he moved through such well-crafted pop gems as “You Wear It Well,” “Tonight I’m Yours (Don’t Hurt Me),” “Young Turks” and “Forever Young.”

He benefitted from backing by a tremendous 11-piece band, which included six female dancers/singers/multi-instrumentalists. Those women routinely stole the show, in a good way, as they performed on everything from mandolin and banjo to violin and harp. They also handled lead vocals on a couple of covers — Chaka Khan’s “I’m Every Woman” and Labelle’s “Lady Marmalade” — all the while keeping pace with Stewart’s many wardrobe changes and contributing plenty of dance moves to the equation.

Incredibly impressive.

The music brought such joy to fans, who greeted each new offering —  “The First Cut Is the Deepest, “You’re in My Heart (The Final Acclaim),” “Maggie May” and more — like old friends.

A little over halfway through the 22-song set, Stewart made another wardrobe change and reappeared wearing all blue and yellow.

“I have changed my outfit to the colors of the Ukrainian flag,” he said, as he dedicated the anti-war song “Rhythm of My Heart” to the people of that war-torn country.

Stewart brought the main set to a close with a series of fan favorites, the best being “The Killing of Georgie, Part I,” a number the Shoreline audience was fortunate to hear because the star isn’t including it on all his tour stops.

A rowdy return to the stage saw him belting out a passionate encore of “Stay With Me.” Clearly, the audience wished they could.
