The 5500-passenger ship Allure OTS is among the world's top-largest and has a unique personality. Scattered throughout the mass of steel, glass, wood and trees are changes, such as new retail options (a Guess store), restaurants (a hot dog stand), shows ("Chicago") and a recognizable green ogre, donkey and penguins culled from the Dream Works films. The cruise line also added 3D viewing facilities to its movie offerings, iPod docks in each stateroom and passenger kiosks from which cruisers might print boarding passes and keep tabs on escalating onboard bills.

Slide mats are colored in black, each with an opening for the feet and a strap to hold on to. Follows the vertical drop (27-degree) some 92 ft / 28 m down to the Boardwalk. There's a secret fore-located/bow-facing sundeck on Deck 14 , accessed from the forward lifts by walking through the hallways. The large sundeck is flanked by two "bridge wings" (jetting off the ship's both sides/bow starboard and portside). Both bridge wings are open-air and with great seaviews but are also often very windy.

There are two "secret balconies" positioned close to the aft elevators on Deck 9 . Both balconies are small (each is furnished with a table and two chairs), overlook Central Park and are some of the best points to view the entire neighborhood.

Aft on Deck 6/Boardwalk there is a stern-facing viewing area accessed via a path that circles around the AquaTheater. This "secret area" offers great views of the ship’s wake (trace on the water surface), also provides great views of the entire neighborhood and has a shuffleboard.

By the Jogging Track (aft on Deck 5/Promenade ) there are several small seating areas fitted with all-weather Adirondack chairs (positioned near the railings).

Itineraries

Allure of the Seas itinerary program is based on 7-day Caribbean cruises leaving roundtrip from homeports in Florida USA ( Fort Lauderdale or Port Canaveral ). In 2015, Allure OTS was deployed in Europe (for the first time) for 7-day Western Mediterranean cruises leaving roundtrip from homeports Civitavecchia-Rome (Italy) and Barcelona (Spain) . On repositioning, the ship offers Transatlantic crossings between Europe and Florida.

Starting November 10, 2022, Allure OTS was homeported in Galveston Texas .

Starting October 30, 2023, Allure OTS has regularly scheduled 3-4-night short breaks (out of Port Canaveral/Orlando to The Bahamas' Nassau and CocoCay Island ) which made it the first Oasis-class liner to offer Caribbean mini-cruises. In July 2024, Allure OTS again changes homeport and starts turnaround operations out of Miami - operating the same Bahamian short break itineraries to Nassau and CocoCay.

Allure Of The Seas Wiki

Allure is Royal Caribbean's 2nd Oasis-class liner - with sisterships  Oasis ,  Harmony , Symphony and Wonder . Until Harmony's inauguration in 2016, Allure and Oasis were the world's biggest cruise vessels . Still, Allure was the bigger one - just 50 mm (nearly 2 inches) longer compared to Oasis. The hulls of both vessels were named in May 2008, following an online competition for proposing the best ship name.

Allure OTS is one of the few vessels named by a cartoon movie character. Her godmother is Princess Fiona, from the movie Shrek. The ceremony took place on the 28th of November, 2010 at Port Everglades near Fort Lauderdale. After the naming ceremony, Allure set sail on her maiden voyage, on the 1st of December 2010, to both the East and the West Caribbean.

The ship has telescoping funnels to be able to sail across under bridges. Royal Caribbean Oasis-class ships are the first cruise vessels to get a DNV Green Passport. This is a key element for the Clean Ship Design certificate. The certificate is not compulsory, but it shows the environmental commitment of the operator. The hulls of Allure and Oasis ships have a special non-toxic covering that minimizes friction and saves fuel.

On November 4, 2016, world's 3 largest passenger liners (Harmony, Allure and Oasis) convened off Florida's coast. The unique event was live-streamed officially by RCI, starting at approx 5 pm EST. The meeting at open sea coincided with the Harmony's arrival at Port Everglades (her US homeport), finishing a 13-night Transatlantic repositioning cruise from Barcelona to Florida (Oct 23 - Nov 5). The following aerial photo shows an Oasis-class vessel (as looked from above).

Allure OTS refurbishment 2025 review

In 2025, the vessel will be drydocked for a major (multi-million) refit and refurbishment project.

As a result, Allure OTS will receive several new facilities, venues and amenities including some signature ones from RCI's QUANTUM and OASIS-PLUS ships.

The upgrades will include new waterslides, redesigned dining venues, new specialty restaurants, bars and lounges.

More details are to be announced in the coming months

Allure OTS refurbishment 2020 review (Royal Amplified)

The ship's Royal Amplified drydock refurb in 2020 was originally scheduled for March 13 - May 9, but was postponed (due to the global health crisis/COVID pandemic) as all seaports (and shipyards) in Spain remained closed in March-April. Allure OTS' drydock 2020 was postponed and revised, with all the staterooms and venue upgrades paused and delayed until RCI's financial situation improves.

The revised drydocking project was estimated at ~EUR 16 million (~USD 17,5 M), including mainly hull and machinery maintenance works. By the original 58-day drydocking project (budgeted USD 165 million / EUR 148 million) at Navantia Shipyard (in Cadiz Spain ) were planned to be added new venues and staterooms, and many existing venues and onboard spaces to be extensively upgraded-redesigned and enhanced.

Aft on Deck 16 (entrance point) was installed the 10-story high waterslide "Ultimate Abyss".

Pool Deck (deck 15) was completely renovated-redesigned, also receiving "The Lime and Coconut" - 2-level poolside bar offering beverages (including cocktails), live DJ programming and outdoor music performances. Swimming pools' sunbathing areas received more shaded seating (daybeds, hammocks, swing seats, casitas / small wooden cabins). The Solarium (adults-only complex) was refreshed and two new whirlpools were added. "The Perfect Storm" (3 waterslides complex) has its entrance level on Deck 15.

On Deck 15, H2O Zone was completely redesigned to "Splashaway Bay" (outdoor playground/aqua park) with Splash Pad (for toddlers), 3 mini-waterslides, water attractions (cannons, fountains, pools) and two drench buckets. Also on Deck 15 was added "Portside BBQ" (a la carte restaurant for traditional American barbecue cuisine) and "El Loco Fresh" (food bar for made-to-order tacos, burritos, quesadillas, salads, salsas).

On Deck 14 was added Royal Escape Room (adventure gaming/team-building exercises). Replacing the Card Room, the new room is dedicated to "Mission Control: Apollo 18" (puzzle game themed after 1973's Apollo 18 moon mission). Forward on Deck 14 were added new staterooms (inside and panoramic oceanview). Forward on Deck 14, Adventure Ocean (kids complex) was completely refurbished-redesigned and enhanced with themed by activities rooms, including Play Place (indoor playground with climbable structures), The Workshop (science-technology fun and crafts-arts room), Arena (physical and interactive games), Hangout (teen-only lounge with gaming consoles, movies, music, outdoor sundeck), AO Babies (room for babies and toddlers), AO Junior (dedicated to kids 3-5 yo).

On Deck 6 (Boardwalk neighborhood) was added "Playmakers Sports Bar and Arcade" featuring 80x large TVs and new activities (tabletop games, popular arcade games, gaming tournaments). The new sports bar has a VIP room (Owner's Box) and serves bar food and draught beers. Also on Deck 6 (aft) is now the Ultimate Abyss waterslide's landing area. Also on Deck 6 was added "Sugar Beach" (selling ice cream and 220+ types of candies) and "Beach Shop" (poolwear).

On Deck 5, the retail shopping complex was redesigned and new brand shops were added.

The new "Spotlight Karaoke" (bar lounge introduced on Oasis OTS) features a stage for singalongs and music trivia games, plus 2 private rooms (for parties) and themed nights.

Also new on Allure OTS are the Quantum-Class venues "Music Hall" (2-deck high dancing lounge with live band music, large dance floor, intimate seating) and "Bionic Bar by Makr Shakr" (served by 2 robotic bartenders). "Clash for the Crystal City" is a new laser tag game played at Studio B's Ice Rink (deck 3).

The list of new dining venues also includes "Giovanni's Italian Kitchen and Wine Bar" (fleet's first reimagined Giovanni's / family restaurant with an upgraded menu, hand-tossed pizzas, charcuterie/meat station, enhanced wine menu),

Allure OTS' 30-day drydocking was completed in mid-November 2020. The project was conducted by Palfinger Marine (1932-founded, Salzburg Austria -based company manufacturing deck equipment, ship-offshore cranes, winches, davit systems for lifeboats). The jobs were conducted at Navantia Shipyard (Cadiz Spain) and involved 23 Palfenger technicians. The ship's all 18 lifeboats and 20 winches were serviced. Each lifeboat has max capacity 370 people.

Allure of the Seas - Cruise Ship Profile and Tour

royal caribbean allure of the seas cruise ship

Royal Caribbean

The Allure of the Seas is one of Royal Caribbean's largest ships, along with her sister ship the Oasis of the Seas , Although the two ships have much in common, including the seven-neighborhood concept, this new ship has its own distinctive entertainment, dining, and retail options. The Harmony of the Seas, which was launched in 2016, is slightly larger than her two older sister ships and now is considered the "world's largest cruise ship".

Although much has been said about the size of the Allure of the Seas and Oasis of the Seas, the ships are only about 65 feet longer than other Royal Caribbean ships. The increase in size is in the height (18 decks) and width. Therefore, most ports are able to dock these two huge ships. However, the infrastructure of many ports and the surrounding areas cannot support the large influx of visitors. The Allure of the Seas currently sails round-trip seven-day cruises to the eastern or western Caribbean year-round from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale. However, some far afield ports like Hong Kong and Singapore are planning to expand their ports to accommodate this mega-ship.

Royal Caribbean executives are calling the Allure of the Seas the "entertainment ship", and it certainly has lots of family and adult activities and amenities. The most noticeable addition is the result of Royal Caribbean's partnership with DreamWorks Animation. Celebrity characters from DreamWorks movies such as Shrek , Madagascar , Kung Fun Panda , and How to Train Your Dragon are incorporated into parades, character breakfasts, skating shows, and photo opportunities on the Allure of the Seas. On a two-day preview cruise of the ship, the characters seemed to be everywhere--the sail away party show at the AquaTheater, the Move It! Move It! Parade on the Royal Promenade, the DreamWorks character breakfast in the Adagio Dining Room, and in an ice show in Studio B.

Other New Features on the Allure of the Seas

  • The Allure of the Seas has added specially equipped 3-D movie screens in the Amber Theater , and this main theater is home to two shows-- Chicago: The Musical , which is an adaptation of the famous Broadway play, and Blue Planet , which is a spectacle of acrobatics, music, and dance. The AquaTheater has a new aquatic production called OceanAria , and Studio B has two new ice shows.
  • The Allure of the Seas has most of the same dining venues as its sister ship the Oasis of the Seas, but Royal Caribbean has added a Brazilian steakhouse called the Samba Grill; Rita's Cantina, a Mexican restaurant; The Boardwalk Dog House, a hot dog specialty counter; and a distinct dining experience at upscale 150 Central Park.
  • Shopping is entertainment for many of us, and the Allure of the Seas has several shopping areas on the ship. In addition to upscale and familiar stores from other ships, contemporary artist Romero Britto has opened his first Britto Concept Store in the Central Park neighborhood, and the Royal Promenade has a GUESS store.
  • Computer users appreciate the guest service kiosks in the Royal Promenade where they can print their SeaPass folio or airline boarding passes. Apple iPod docking stations are found in all staterooms.

Now that we've seen what's new on the Allure of the Seas, let's take a tour of the ship's seven neighborhoods.

  • Allure of the Seas Boardwalk
  • Allure of the Seas Central Park
  • Allure of the Seas Entertainment Place
  • Allure of the Seas Pool and Sports Zone
  • Allure of the Seas Royal Promenade
  • Allure of the Seas Vitality Spa and Fitness Center
  • Allure of the Seas Youth Zone
  • Summary and Wrap-UP

Allure of the Seas - Boardwalk

The Allure of the Seas Boardwalk neighborhood is aft on deck 6. When you enter the Boardwalk, the beautiful carousel greeting you certainly brings back memories of classic seaside piers like Coney Island or Atlantic City. Like the carousel on the Oasis of the Seas, the figures on this one were specially made for Royal Caribbean from poplar wood. The full-sized carousel features a menagerie of 18 moving figures for the riders, and there's a stationary seat for those who don't want to sit astride. Several carved horse figures next to the carousel show the evolution of the final product from a large block of wood to painted show horse.

The open air Boardwalk is flanked on one end by the 3-deck Dazzles Bar and on the other by the AquaTheater . The Boardwalk has 6 AquaTheater suites, 221 balcony cabins, and 8 Boardwalk-view cabins overlooking the bustling area.

Families love Boardwalk dining at Rita's Cantina taqueria or Johnny Rockets diner, having a hot dog at the Boardwalk Dog House, or homemade ice cream or sweets at the ice cream parlor and donut shop. Adults also like the Boardwalk Bar and the margaritas at Rita's.

Before they eat, some might want to try one of the two 43-foot tall rock climbing walls. Each has multiple climbing routes. Those who don't want to try their hands and feet at rock climbing can explore one of the shops on the Boardwalk, including a novelty photo shop, stuffed animal shop, candy store, teen and children's retail shops, or the Carousel cart.

The AquaTheater is used both day and night for aquatic acrobatic, synchronized swimming, dancing fountains, and light shows. It has amphitheater-type seating and a 17-foot deep pool that accommodates high divers. Billed as the most technologically-advanced area of the ship, it has to be seen to be believed. The stage goes up and down, fountains dance, lights change, and the large screens flanking the stage show it all. The OceanAria water show is shown six times per week, with two performances on each of the first three nights of the cruise. If the weather cancels one of these nights, the shows are rescheduled for later in the week.

Let's move to a quieter, more peaceful and romantic neighborhood--Central Park.

Allure of the Seas - Central Park

City dwellers feel right at home at Central Park midship on deck 8 of the Royal Caribbean Allure of the Seas cruise ship. It's like a cosmopolitan open-air park with no views of the ocean. You really feel like you are experiencing summer in the city in this unique area. The area is lush and green, with many places to sit and have a quiet drink or just snuggle with your best friend. Central Park is open to the sky, but this central piazza of the ship is surrounded by restaurants, bars, and shops. Like in a city, these retail areas are topped with staterooms .

Central Park has four restaurants and two bars. The most exclusive restaurant on the Allure of the Seas, 150 Central Park, has a young executive chef with a signature elegant dining experience. The Park Cafe , Chops Grille, and Giovanni's Table are popular venues also found on the Oasis of the Seas.

The Vintages wine bar has both indoor and outdoor seating, and I love the quiet atmosphere at the Trellis Bar . It's a perfect spot for a late evening drink.

Central Park also has three retail shops: the Britto Store and art gallery, a Coach store, and a portrait studio.

While Central Park is one of the quietest places on the Allure of the Seas, Entertainment Place is one of the most vibrant.

Allure of the Seas - Entertainment Place

Entertainment Place is on deck 4, just a short walk down the stairs from the Royal Promenade . This neighborhood on the Royal Caribbean Allure of the Seas cruise ship is filled with the large casino, show lounges, and theaters.

The Amber Theater is the main large theater and it has a huge stage and "fly space", which allows for a lot of creativity in designing productions. Blue Planet , with its aerial acrobatics, dance, and music, has the largest set Royal Caribbean has ever used for a show. It includes a tree that is 22 feet wide on a stage that is 50 feet wide (about 10 feet wider than most Broadway stages). For the first three minutes of the show, guests see the tree, but they don't see the 17 of the 25 Blue Planet performers hidden in the tree. These performers finally come to life and use trampolines and other gymnastic apparatus in their aerial and acrobatic show. Blue Planet plays twice a week.

The other main show in the Amber Theater is Chicago: The Musical , a 90-minute version of the Broadway play, which is shown three times a week. The cast of 19 has to be able to sing, dance and act. The styling of Chicago is a nice contrast to the athleticism of Blue Planet , and I was surprised to learn that the two shows have some of the same cast members. These artists must love the variety of their jobs!

In addition to these two main shows, the Amber Theater is used to show 3-D movies, and the Allure of the Seas is Royal Caribbean's first ship to have 3-D movie screens.

The Studio B ice rink is the other large theater at Allure's Entertainment Place. Two ice shows, one called Ice Games , and the other How to Train Your Dragon , are bound to entertain guests. Ice Games brings the classic board game Monopoly to life, with spinning dice and elaborate costumes. How to Train Your Dragon is a shortened ice version of the popular DreamWorks movie.

Other venues at Entertainment Place include Jazz on 4, a jazz and blues club; Comedy Live, a comedy club; and the Blaze nightclub.

Our next venue is mostly outdoors on decks 15 and 16--the Pool and Sports Zone.

Allure of the Seas - Pool and Sports Zone

The Allure of the Seas Pool and Sports Zone covers all of deck 14 and most of deck 15. It offers great views down onto Central Park. As expected, the primary focus for this deck is outdoor relaxation in one of the pools or on one of the lounges. The Royal Caribbean Allure of the Seas has four pools on deck 15--the main pool with hundreds of lounge chairs; the beach pool with a gently sloping entry facilitating easy entry; H2O Zone, which is a kids splash area and wading pool; and the Sports Pool, which is used for lap swimming in the morning and water team sports in the afternoon. Pool Deck 15 also has 10 whirlpools .

Those who want to do more than just relax by the pool can try out one of the two large FlowRider surf simulators, the zip line across Central Park, miniature golf , or basketball, volleyball, or soccer on the Sports Court .

Adults love the gorgeous Solarium , which has numerous small seating areas. In addition to its two whirlpools , the adults-only Solarium has a small pool and four cantilevered infinity whirlpools suspended 136 feet over the ocean.

Although much of the focus on the pool decks is a fun activity, the area has two retail shops, four restaurants , and six casual bars. The Samba Grill is a new Brazilian steakhouse restaurant open in the evening with a large salad bar and delicious, never-ending slabs of meat and fish. In the daytime, the Samba Grill serves as the Solarium Bistro and offers health-conscious breakfast and lunch. Other restaurants include the casual Wipe Out Cafe, the Windjammer Buffet, and the a la carte Izumi Asian Cuisine and sushi bar.

Let's move back indoors to walk down the Royal Promenade.

Allure of the Seas - Royal Promenade

The first Royal Caribbean Royal Promenades were located on the Voyager- and Freedom-class ships. The Royal Promenade on the Allure of the Seas is a marvelous indoor mall area, lined with shops, bars, and restaurants. Serving as the entry area for embarking passengers, it's the first thing an Allure of the Seas passenger sees. It's also the hub of the ship featuring parades and parties and is a good place to people-watch.

The Royal Promenade has three restaurants similar to those on the Oasis of the Seas--the Bow and Stern English pub, the Cafe Promenade, and Sorrento's Pizzeria. Those with a sweet tooth love the Cupcake Cupboard, and the area even has the first Starbuck's at sea.

The bars on the Royal Promenade are diverse, fun, and are identical to those on the Oasis of the Seas. They include the Schooner Bar , On Air Club , Boleros , Rising Tide , and the Champagne Bar . The most innovative bar is the Rising Tide , which doubles as an elevator connecting the Royal Promenade with Central Park three decks above. It's a wonderful concept and a real conversation piece.

Adding to the mall-like atmosphere on the Royal Promenade are the eight retail outlets, including GUESS, a photo store, Regalia fine jewelry and gifts, Solera perfume and cosmetics, a logo and souvenir shop, boutique fashion store, and a liquor store.

The next area is guaranteed to help you relax and rejuvenate--the Vitality Spa and Fitness Center.

Allure of the Seas - Vitality Spa and Fitness Center

The goal of the Royal Caribbean Allure of the Seas Vitality Spa and Fitness program is the total wellness of the mind, body, and spirit. Guests can continue the treatments and workout program they have at home or start a new one. The entire Vitality neighborhood has 47 staff and 29 treatment rooms in the spa. In addition, there is a thermal suite with heated benches, enrichment lounge with wellness lectures, separate fitness center , beauty salon, medi-spa with acupuncture and other cosmetic treatments, and a teen and kid spa. Three massage rooms are large and dedicated to couples.

One interesting feature of the spa is the "man cave", which provides treatments for the urban man including collagen, deep cleansing, and even shaving lessons! Men want to escape from the stressful daily lives just like the women in their lives.

Workout enthusiasts appreciate the 158 exercise machines, including a Kinesis tri-dimensional pulley system, spinning machines, gravity reformer, and dozens of the latest cardio and resistance equipment items. Classes are held in spinning, kickboxing, Pilates, and yoga.

The Vitality at Sea Spa and Fitness Center also has a small cafe and retail shop.

The last neighborhood on the Allure of the Seas is the Youth Zone.

Allure of the Seas - Youth Zone

The Allure of the Seas is certainly large enough to have something for all age groups and interests, and Royal Caribbean has several age-appropriate groups for kids in its Adventure Ocean program. Each group has their own dedicated space in the huge Youth Zone (28,700 square feet). The Allure needs this much space during the busy summer and holiday times when up to about 1900 kids are onboard.

Each year, The Allure entertains about 400,000 kids under 18, with about half of those under 12. Kids from over 70 countries are using Adventure Ocean, so the Youth Zone has an international staff. The ship has 39 youth staff, and according to the Adventure Ocean manager, their goal is to create energetic, safe, and fun activities for their young charges ages 6 months to 17 years. Most of the Adventure Ocean activities are free except for those under three.

Royal Caribbean uses Fisher-Price toys in Adventure Ocean, and each age group has different types of toys and special play sessions. The kids get a daily schedule just like the adults do, with all the planned activities listed. Most play sessions have a theme.

The Allure of the Seas Youth Zone has six age groups:

  • Royal Babies and Tots - 6 months to 3 years
  • Aquanauts - ages 3 to 5
  • Explorers - ages 6 to 8
  • Voyagers - ages 9 to 11
  • Tweens - ages 11 to 12
  • Teens - ages 13 to 17

Parents are encouraged to put their children in the matching age group. According to the Adventure Ocean manager, this works about 90 percent of the time. If it doesn't, then the child can be moved. One rule is strict--babies must be fully toilet-trained before they can move from the Royal Babies group to the Aquanauts. No pull-ups or diapers are allowed at Adventure Ocean activities. The Youth Zone can accommodate special needs children, but can't provide 1-on-1 care. The parents are welcome to stay with their children if they wish.

The Royal Babies and Tots is a drop off nursery with one dedicated nursery staff for each four babies. The number is adjusted based on demand. The charge is $8 per hour and is open from 9 am until about midnight. The nursery is open on both sea and port days. Parents can book in advance, but drop-ins are welcome. The Allure of the Seas provides a deck phone for parents to use while they are on the ship.

The Aquanauts use many of the Fisher-Price toys in their activity room. The Explorers have Nintendos and Wiis and use the art room, science lab, and Adventure Ocean theater in their activities. The Voyagers also use all of the same facilities as the Explorers but are more independent. They also use the FlowRiders and sports courts. The Adventure Ocean staff do not have any activities for those 3-11 at the pools, but all three age groups are involved with the DreamWorks experience. The characters are in Adventure Ocean about once or twice a day, and often there is a DreamWorks theme day.

The tweens and teens have their own schedule and six dedicated staff to work with the 200-800 youth who participate each week. Their space is on deck 15, while the rest of Adventure Ocean is on deck 14. The kids don't sign in and out like they do for those under 12. They have a Living Room area, which is a lounge with TVs, games, computers, and music studio. They also have a teen night club, and outside back deck. The tweens/teens area is near the table tennis, sports court, and Wipe Out cafe, but they use the entire ship for their fun, having scavenger hunts, dancing, swimming, and hanging out with their new friends.

Allure of the Seas - Summary and Wrap Up

Like her sister ship the Oasis of the Seas, the Royal Caribbean Allure of the Seas is designed for fun for all ages. The entertainment, activity, and dining options are vast and fun. This is one ship you could sail on for a week and never disembark in the ports of call. It's also a ship you could sail on for a week and forget you were on a ship, especially if your cabin was inside or overlooking Central Park.

Similar to the Oasis, I was amazed at the technology and innovation on this ship. Anyone who loves a large ship cruise experience or all-inclusive Caribbean resort will love sailing on the Allure of the Seas. I'd even recommend this class of ship to those who have said they don't like cruising because they feel confined or complain about not enough space. I'm just sorry that in my two nights on the ship, I didn't have time to try all the restaurants, shows, and activities!

Royal Caribbean shares its plan to keep passengers happy

W hen you sail on the larger ships Carnival and Royal Caribbean offer out of various Florida ports, you're generally choosing the ship over its destinations. It's not that you can't have fun in Nassau, Cozumel, Roatan, Freeport, St. Maarten, and the other Caribbean stops those ships make, but they're not the most exotic locations.

Both cruise lines, however, have made many of the ships sailing out of Port Canaveral, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami destinations in themselves. Royal Caribbean has the biggest cruise ship in the world, Icon of the Seas, sailing the Caribbean out of Miami, and its next Oasis-class ship, Utopia of the Seas will kick off its first season sailing 3-4 day itineraries out of Port Canaveral.

Related: How a Royal Caribbean sale really works (and how to save money)

Itineraries for many of Royal Caribbean's ships including Icon, Utopia, and another Oasis-class ship, Allure of the Seas, all stop at the cruise line's private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay.

CocoCay is not a traditional just a beach with food and drinks private island. It's more a resort destination with a huge no-extra-charge pool along with an added-fee Beach Club and a separate extra-cost adults-only area, both of which have their own pools.

Perfect Day has been a big enough success for Royal Caribbean that the cruise line plans to "Beach Club" private experiences, one in Nassau and the other in Cozumel. In addition, Disney, Carnival, Norwegian, and MSC Cruises all have plans to either build new private destinations or improve their existing ones.

Royal Caribbean gives the people what they want

Royal Caribbean understands its customers. The brand's CEO Michael Bayley explained its strategy during the company's first-quarter earnings call .

"When we think of the Beach Club portfolio that we're planning on developing, along with Perfect Day, they're incredibly complementary destination experiences and they fit really in the sweet spot of our demographics and really in terms of what our guests are seeking, looking for when they go on a Caribbean cruise, they really knock it out of the park in terms of satisfying that demand, that need. So, very similar type of product, different vibe," he said.

The company's private island offers a slightly different experience compared to what the upcoming Beach Clubs will offer.

"Perfect Day is the full day for thrill and chill and the Beach Club is, as you imagine, just an incredible day at the beach, which is what most guests are seeking in the Caribbean. And it's curated by Royal Caribbean. It's a stunning experience. And of course, it's very authentically connected to the culture, for example, in the Bahamas or Mexico," he added.

Sign up for the Come Cruise With Me newsletter to save money on your next cruise.

And it really is a huge demand driver. When we look at the demand that we've seen for Perfect Day, this year we'll take 3.2 million guests to Perfect Day. Last year it was 2.6 million. And it really is a demand driver.

Private islands drive demand

The success of Coco Cay almost certainly factored into Carnival building Celebration Key in Grand Bahama and Disney working on Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, its new Bahamas destination.

Bayley made it clear that Royal Caribbean's customers are fueling the investment in private destinations.

"People want to sail on the ships that go to Perfect Day and they want to sail on the ships that go to the Beach Club. And I think it's proven to be incredibly successful. When you wrap that up with the kind of hardware we've introduced, for example, Icon, which has been an unbelievable success. I mean, beyond our wildest dreams success," he shared.

Want the latest cruise news and deals? Sign up for the Come Cruise With Me newsletter.

Bayley believes that success is repeatable.

"And you add on Utopia, which is a brand new Oasis-class ship, which was going straight into the short product market out of Port Canaveral. The demand we've seen for, for example, Utopia sailing to Perfect Day has been extraordinary. So we think we've got the formula figured out. And our plan is to continue to evolve and develop that formula over the coming years," he added.

Royal Caribbean drink packages: Prices, inclusions and what to know before you buy

Melinda Crow

Royal Caribbean drink packages allow you to drink what you want, when you want without feeling like you are being nickeled and dimed. Isn't that most cruisers' dream? The all-inclusive, extra-fee beverage plans aren't necessarily for everyone, but they offer a nice way to enhance your cruise and take some of the stress out of in-the-moment vacation decisions.

Royal Caribbean ships offer a variety of packages, from a simple Water Package that keeps you and your crew hydrated during your cruise to a comprehensive plan that includes most alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks. Other than the Water Package, which is priced based on the quantity you order, drink packages on Royal Caribbean are priced per person, per day.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

The most common questions about Royal Caribbean's drink packages revolve around what each package includes, whether they are worth the price and when is the best time to buy your package. I've tried all of Royal Caribbean's drink packages. I've also cruised without a package. Here's what you need to know to decide if a beverage plan is right for you.

What's included in Royal Caribbean's drink packages?

Royal Caribbean offers a few different drink packages, and the inclusions vary based on your choice. All options include gratuities, and no Royal Caribbean drink package covers room service or minibar drinks. Also, unlimited alcoholic beverage packages may not be available while the ship sails in some locations, so package details may change based on the itinerary.

Water Package

Royal Caribbean's Water Package is available in 12- and 24-packs of 1-liter bottles of Evian water. The bottles will be delivered to your cabin on embarkation day.

royal caribbean allure of the seas cruise ship

If you don't want to pay for a Water Package, you can find drinking water at complimentary drink stations in the buffet area and often in other locations on Royal Caribbean ships. Bring your own reusable bottle and fill it from these stations or straight from the faucet in your cabin. The water throughout the ships is not only drinkable but also better than what's available in many cities. You can also purchase bottles of water a la carte.

Why might you consider a Water Package? If you drink bottled water at home, you may prefer the taste. The package also allows you to have plenty of water on hand in your cabin or to take on excursions.

The downside is that 1-liter bottles are not the ideal size for lugging off the ship with you. You must either bring a reusable bottle or purchase single-serving bottles for port days. You can get these at bars or the gangway as you disembark in each port.

Classic Soft Drinks Package

Royal Caribbean's Soft Drinks Package is for the serious soda drinker. On select ships, the package comes with a souvenir Coca-Cola cup with a chip on the bottom to allow the holder to use the Freestyle soda dispensing machines throughout the ship. The "magic" cup gets you all the refills you want 24 hours a day, with your pick of sodas with add-in flavorings. (Orange Coke is my fave.) Coca-Cola Freestyle machines are available on 18 ships in the fleet.

You can also order a glass of soda at any restaurant or bar on board. Some venues only serve fountain sodas, but others have cans. One big bonus of the package is that sodas on Royal Caribbean's private island destinations ( Perfect Day at Coco Cay and Labadee ) are included. The only time you can't get a free soda with this package is with room service (because room service, other than continental breakfast, comes with a $7.95 service fee, no matter what you order) or from your cabin's minibar.

Related: 8 best drinks to order with a cruise ship beverage package (and 3 to avoid)

You can bring up to 12 cans of soda (or bottles up to 17 ounces) per person on board with you in your carry-on luggage when you board the ship. So, why would you want a Classic Soft Drinks Package?

It's a question of convenience. I've been known to take a couple of 16-ounce bottles of soda on board with me, but carrying on much more than that is a big hassle. With a Classic Soft Drinks Package, you can easily access your beverage of choice anywhere you are on board — including ordering sodas from roaming bar servers at the pool, in the casino or at events and shows — or on Royal Caribbean's private islands . You don't have to return to your room to grab a soda. It's also great for older kids and teens who might be roaming the ship with friends.

Refreshment Package

This is my favorite Royal Caribbean drink package. It includes still and sparkling water, sodas (with the included Freestyle magic cup), mocktails, premium coffees and teas (but not those from Starbucks stand-alone stores or kiosks) and freshly squeezed juices.

With this package, you can order almost anything nonalcoholic at bars and most restaurants on board. The Refreshment Package does not include shakes at Johnny Rockets, which are only included with the Deluxe Beverage Package.

Even the smoothies and protein shakes at Vitality Cafe and milkshakes at Johnny Rockets are included in this package, as is the sweet tea at Portside BBQ on Oasis of the Seas. Want a strawberry slushy? Order a virgin strawberry daiquiri. Want hot cocoa? Covered. How about a virgin mudslide? A bartender will happily blend up vanilla ice cream, coffee, hazelnut syrup and chocolate syrup into a perfect mocha shake.

As with the Classic Soft Drinks Package, you can order your nonalcoholic beverages, from sparkling water to fancy mocktails, from your pool lounger or blackjack table.

Plus, with the Refreshment Package, you've solved the problem of needing water to take off the ship with you for excursions and what to drink while on the private islands. It's all included in this package.

Deluxe Beverage Package

This package takes all that's available in the Refreshment Package (sodas, water, mocktails, premium coffee and tea, and fresh-squeezed juice) and adds cocktails, spirits and liquors, as well as beer by the bottle or can and wine by the glass.

There are some limits on brands available with the package, but the list includes imported, domestic and craft beer, an extensive wine list and commonly ordered spirit brands on drinks up to $14. Any bar server can tell you what's available on your cruise.

You also get a hefty 40% discount on bottles of wine up to $100 and a 20% discount on bottles over $100. It's handy for sharing a bottle with your travel partner at dinner.

As with the Classic Soft Drinks and Refreshment packages, you can use the Deluxe Beverage Package anywhere on board (except stand-alone Starbucks locations). Use it in restaurants, bars and any other venue where a bar server is present, as well as at either of Royal Caribbean's private island destinations. The Deluxe Beverage Package also includes milkshakes at Johnny Rockets.

royal caribbean allure of the seas cruise ship

This package comes with a few caveats. If one person in a cabin buys this package, everyone of legal drinking age in the cabin must buy the same package, according to cruise line policy. If someone in your room does not drink alcohol, don't worry. I've encountered many people who have called customer service and downgraded one or more non-drinking adults to a Refreshment Package.

Related: 15 ways that cruising newbies waste money on their first cruise

The package also does not include drinks that come with souvenir glasses, but you can order the same drink in a regular glass.

If your vacation plans include alcoholic beverages, buying this package is a nice way to pay your cruise bar tab in advance rather than deal with the shock of a high bill at the end of the cruise.

Cafe Select Coffee Card

This option is ideal for cruisers who prefer a little fancier caffeine fix than what a simple cup of coffee provides. This card entitles you to any 15 specialty espresso-based coffees throughout your cruise. (This package excludes beverages from Starbucks stores or cafes.) One shot of espresso equals one card punch. If you order a specialty coffee that includes two shots of espresso, you will pay for that one drink with two punches.

Unlike Royal Caribbean's other drink packages, the Cafe Select Coffee Card is not restricted to one person, and anyone in your cabin can use it.

What do Royal Caribbean drink packages cost?

The cruise line uses dynamic pricing on beverage packages the same way it does on cruise fares. That means you won't know the prices for each package before you book a cruise. Demand, destination and promotions play a big part in the pricing, especially for the Deluxe Beverage Package, causing them to fluctuate slightly.

Here's what you can expect a Royal Caribbean drink package to cost:

  • Water Package : 12 bottles for $39; 24 bottles for $69
  • Classic Soft Drinks Package : $12.99 per person, per day
  • Refreshment Package : $29 per person, per day
  • Deluxe Beverage Package : $56 to $105 per person, per day (depending on your ship and trip)
  • Cafe Select Coffee Card : $31 per card

The prices listed above do not include an automatic 18% gratuity (which is also applied to the coffee card). You'll want to factor that amount into your travel budget if you decide to purchase a package.

You will notice that the Deluxe Beverage Package price range listed above is a bit wider than what is posted on Royal Caribbean's site. Posted price ranges include the disclaimer that prices on individual sailings may vary. We used a realistic range of prices from Royal Caribbean guests who have booked cruises and paid for drink packages in the past 12 months.

The best time to buy Royal Caribbean drink packages

You can purchase a beverage package as soon as you book your cruise, but should you? A lot depends on how soon your ship will depart. If you're sailing within a few months, go ahead and get any packages you plan to buy — unless Black Friday happens before you sail. Black Friday deals on drink packages are generally the lowest you'll find all year.

The package that varies most in price is the Deluxe Beverage Package. Its price is higher during peak travel times and on cruises with stops at private islands. Buying this package ahead of time is always cheaper than purchasing it once you're on board.

Royal Caribbean does advertise price drops and deals for pre-cruise purchases. If you're waiting and hoping for a deal, frequent cruisers report that you should look at the actual price per person, per day, not at the percentage off or BOGO deals, to determine if the package price is where you want it.

Related: How to get free or cheap drinks on a cruise

Is a Royal Caribbean drink package worth it?

Now that you know your choices and why you might want each package, let's get down to the nitty-gritty of whether these packages are worth purchasing.

The 1-liter bottles in the Water Package cost roughly the same as a 12-ounce bottle from a bar. That makes this package a deal, but only if you prefer bottled water over taps or dispensers. It's also convenient to have the water delivered to your cabin, eliminating the need to bring a case of bottles on board or search for a bottle when you want water on the ship.

When ordering an individual soda on the ship, your charge will be what you'd expect to pay at a land-based restaurant, plus an 18% gratuity added automatically. When you ask a bar server for a soda on the ship, you'll be charged just over $4 per soda with the tip, regardless of whether it comes in a can or from a fountain.

As the starting point for the Classic Soft Drinks Package is just over $15 per person, per day with the gratuity, you'll need to count on drinking a minimum of four sodas a day for it to be a good value.

If you prefer nonalcoholic beverages, you can expect to pay around $7 for mocktails and protein shakes, $5 for lattes at non-Starbucks locations and close to $9 for smoothies. These prices are before the automatic 18% gratuity.

Here's what your daily consumption might look like on the Refreshment Package: You could start with a morning latte ($6 after you add gratuity), grab water for your excursion ($3.84), enjoy a soda at lunch ($4), sip a couple of mocktails during the afternoon ($8.25 each), have another soda with dinner ($4) and enjoy another mocktail for the show or in the casino ($8.25).

That puts you at over $40 for the day, making the Refreshment Package a deal at $34 (with tip) per person, per day. Drink much less than that, and this Royal Caribbean drink package won't be worth it. The Refreshment Package price varies only slightly between sailings.

For alcoholic drinks, prices vary a lot based on your order. Beer and hard cider average $7 to $9. Wine by the glass is $9 to $25. Cocktails are $10 to $14, except for the drink of the day, which is $8. These prices do not include the 18% gratuity.

royal caribbean allure of the seas cruise ship

When deciding if Royal Caribbean's Deluxe Beverage Package is worth it, be sure to factor in nonalcoholic drinks you are likely to have, not just those with alcohol. How many premium coffees do you drink each day, including one with your dessert at dinner? How many bottles of water and sodas?

The value of those often adds up to $25 or more per day. That leaves you with somewhere between $30 and $80 per day to spend on alcoholic drinks to break even.

If you're lucky and can purchase your package at the lowest possible price, almost anyone who drinks a combination of nonalcoholic drinks and a couple of cocktails daily would break even. But if your purchase price is somewhere in the middle of the price range (where most people land), you would need to consume a minimum of $55 per day beyond the average nonalcoholic beverages to break even. That equals six beers, or four or five glasses of wine or cocktails.

Related: Are cruise drink packages worth the price? What to know before you buy

royal caribbean allure of the seas cruise ship

For fans of specialty coffees, this package could save you money. Based on the price of a single espresso shot latte (about $6 after you add gratuity), you would only get five coffees for roughly the same cost as the coffee card. Since you get 15 single espresso shot beverages with the coffee card, you get more than double the number of coffees for the same price.

Whichever package you choose, your value may also depend on your itinerary and activities. On a Caribbean cruise that includes a sea day or two and a stop at CocoCay, you'll likely drink more — simply because you're relaxing more than touring, and the hot temperatures will make you thirsty.

But what about a port-intensive cruise in Europe where you are off the ship for long hours and likely to be sampling local beverages? In that case, the ship's beverage package might not come through for you.

Combined packages

If you mainly drink specialty coffees and sodas, one way to save a little money on your beverages is to combine the Cafe Select Coffee Card with the Classic Soda Package.

For example, you would need to purchase the Refreshment Package to get both sodas and premium coffees and teas, which is $29 per person, per day. The cost for the Cafe Select Coffee Card with the Classic Soda Package would run you $12.99 per day, plus a one-time cost of $31 for the card. So, for a five-night cruise, the Refreshment Package would cost you $145 per person; the combined Cafe Select Coffee Card and Classic Soda would cost $95.95 per person. You could spend even less if you're traveling with a partner and want to share one coffee card and each get your own soda package.

Additional factors

Before you decide if a Royal Caribbean drink package is worth it, there are two more things to consider: your Crown & Anchor loyalty status and your Casino Royale player status .

If you are a Diamond C&A member, your SeaPass card will be loaded with four free drinks per day. Diamond Plus members get five drinks, and Pinnacle members get six. Those can be water, specialty coffee or tea (other than from Starbucks and Desserted), sodas from bar servers, beer, wine or cocktails up to $14 (except at Bionic Bar).

As for casino perks, if your status is Prime or higher, you can drink free from the casino bar anytime it is open.

Those free perks could make the difference in which package you choose, if any. For example, a Diamond member might use her free drink allotment on cocktails and wine and save money with a Refreshment or Soda Package for her other daily drinks. Or, perhaps, the free drinks are enough that it's cheaper to buy a few nonalcoholic beverages a la carte.

Diamond Plus members also have a discount of 30% on Deluxe Beverage Packages when purchased on board. That's rarely a good deal unless you simply forget to buy in advance, as pre-purchase in the cruise planner or app is almost always at least 30% lower than the onboard price.

Bottom line: Is a drink package on Royal Caribbean right for you?

royal caribbean allure of the seas cruise ship

Now that you have all the facts, there are several ways to look at Royal Caribbean's drink packages to determine if you should get one.

First, consider every kind of drink you will likely pay for on board. Are you happy with beverages that are included in the cruise fare? Those include tap water, drip coffee, tea, milk, lemonade and juice from a dispenser at breakfast. Or, will your vacation only be complete with morning lattes, smoothies, fruity drinks by the pool and wine with dinner?

For some people, it's easy. If you're likely to drink four or five cocktails most days, plus specialty coffee, waters for excursions, soda and a glass of wine at dinner, your total, if purchased individually, would easily exceed $80 per day. Unless your sailing has a higher-than-average price for the package, go for it.

However, if you typically only drink a couple of glasses of wine at dinner, you aren't likely to break even — at least, not on the Deluxe Beverage Package. In that case, skip the package that includes alcohol and do the math on the Refreshment Package.

If you drink soda, the difference in price between the Classic Soft Drinks Package and the Refreshment Package is $16. Almost any combination of two other drinks — lattes, mocktails, smoothies or bottled water — makes the Refreshment Package a deal for you. If you can live without the extras, stick with the soda-only package.

If none of those looks like a bargain, pay as you go. Some people set a daily drink budget and check themselves (or their kids) against their folio in the Royal Caribbean app or on the interactive TV in their cabin. I've even met people who bring cash along to pay their drink balance daily at guest services to stay on track.

The other side of the equation is to factor the price of the drink package into the total vacation cost to make the cruise more of an all-inclusive vacation experience. Think about it like you would an all-inclusive land-based resort. When you vacation at one of those, you not only wouldn't know the price of the drinks you consume, but you also would not care.

If you're more interested in a stress-free vacation where you don't have to agonize about the cost of every drink you consume than you are in paying the least amount of money possible for your vacation, a Royal Caribbean drink package is totally worth it.

The bottom line is that drink packages on Royal Caribbean expand your choices. You can use packages to make your cruise as all-inclusive as you'd like (and maybe save some money in the process), or you can opt to cruise and drink in pay-as-you-go mode. Either way, you'll find plenty of fun cocktails and mocktails, as well as your favorite wine and beer, to enhance your vacation at sea.
